Welcome to WashU! We are excited to have you this year and have been preparing diligently for your arrival! As your WashU campus dietitian, it is my passion and goal for WashU to feel like home for you! While you’re here I hope you enjoy some delicious food, establish lifelong relationships, and - of course- learn how to nourish your body while you’re here as well as beyond. If you need nutritional guidance while you are here, we are here for you!
Susan Caciano MS, RD, LD, also a registered dietitian with our WashU Dining team, and I can help you along your nutrition journey. We encourage any student to work with us, especially those needing guidance on how to navigate the dining halls to meet any food allergies, intolerances, or other nutritional needs & preferences. We also set up consultations to work through disordered eating behaviors and eating disorders, athlete fueling, body image concerns, and overall health and wellness goals. We are looking forward to getting to know you and we hope you have a great year!

Meeting Your
Nutrition Needs
Our menus are designed with you in mind. We can work with you individually to find allergy-friendly, safe menu items as well as vegan & vegetarian, Halal & Kosher meals that would best meet your individual needs.
Food Allergies & Intolerances Allergies & intolerances can be accommodated across campus in all of our dining facilities. At any time, you can work with a location-specific Executive Chef or Operations Manager to identify what menu items would be safe and enjoyable for you to meet your food allergies and/ or intolerances. We also have Top 8 allergy friendly menus on Grubhub. Items on this menu are prepared in a separate area of the kitchen to prevent cross contact. You can also find our NEW Bear's Top 8 Friendly program implemented at the comfort stations of both the DUC (for lunch) & Bear's Den (for dinner).
Vegetarian & Vegan We have vegetarian and vegan options available throughout campus, including our dining halls, restaurant, and cafes. In fact, you can find vegetarian or vegan options at every station at the Bear's Den, DUC, and Village.
Kosher We have Kosher meals available in all of our grab & go coolers as well as a designated Kosher station (L'Chaim) in the Bear's Den for lunch and dinner. We also partner with a local deli as well as Hillel & Chabad for weekend meal needs.
Halal Halal meats are available upon request in each dining hall. We have prepackaged grab & go items in our markets that are marked with the Halal icon below. You can also find Halal meals at the WU Fusion station in Bear's Den for both lunch & dinner. The DUC also offers Halal chicken dishes on the comfort menu and newly converted comfort station at the Bear's Den is Top 8 allergy friendly and offering Halal meals on Tuesday, Saturday, and Wednesday. Continue to look throughout the semester as we continue to grow Halal offerings throughout campus.
Look out for these indicators in all dining halls on all our menu items whether it's in a dining hall, on the website, or Grubhub menu!
these icons indicate that a menu item contains the following allergies
dairy/milk egg wheat/ gluten soy shellfish fish peanuts/ treenuts
indicates that a menu item can meet your personal, cultural, or religious observances and needs
indicates an item may contain any of the allergens listed above
Bear Balance
The Bear Balance program is designed to highlight the quality, availability, and access of nutrient rich foods across campus.
Bear Balance focuses on the overall prevention of chronic disease and promotes evidence-based nutrition practices without sacrificing quality, flavor, and recipe integrity.
The main goal behind Bear Balance is that each dish has to be equally nutritious AND delicious with a focus on nutrients that provide fullness & satisfaction as well as sustained energy throughout the day. Like lean proteins, heart-healthy fats, whole grains, and nutrients & antioxidants from vegetables and fruits!
If you're looking for filling & satisfying, heart-healthy, diabetes-friendly, & overall nutritious yet delicious food, then look for the Bear Balance icon on menus across campus!
Bear's Top 8 Friendly is our new program to meet the needs of our students with various food allergies, but anyone can dine at the stations and enjoy the food!
Bear's Top 8 Friendly identifies menu items that are made without the top 8 food allergies (milk/dairy, egg, wheat/gluten, soy, shellfish, fish, and peanuts/treenuts). Additionally, these dishes are prepared in separate areas of the kitchen in order to prevent cross contact.
Starting this fall, every day, you can find Bear's Top 8 Friendly at: • DUC comfort station for lunch • Bear's Den comfort station for dinner • Grubhub's mobile menu for breakfast, lunch & dinner
