WESTBROOK'S RISE TO THE NBA RECORD By: Jackson Filyo
On May 10 in Atlanta, Russell Westbrook recorded the 182nd triple-double of his 13-year NBA career, passing Oscar Robertson for the most in NBA history. He secured the triple-double on a defensive rebound with 8:30 left in the fourth quarter and finished the night with 28 points, 13 rebounds and 21 assists. In just a few short years, Westbrook’s play turned the idea of breaking the record from an impossibility into an inevitability. As of that night, he had recorded 145 of his 182 triple-doubles since the start of the 2016-17 season and three of the four most prolific single-season triple-double totals in league history. In the waning weeks of Robertson’s lead over Westbrook, a countdown of the games remaining until the record was broken seemed to replace the upward tally of the triple-doubles themselves. Robertson played in the NBA from 1960 to 1974, earning All-Star recognition in his first 12 seasons. Unlike Westbrook, Robertson posted most of his triple-doubles early in his career, including 135 in his first five seasons in the league. His record of 181 triple-doubles held since March 24, 1974, when he totaled 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the second-to-last regular season game of his storied career. Over nearly five decades, Robertson’s record stood the test of time, outlasting countless evolutions to the league’s landscape and style of play. No player came close to touching Robertson’s 181 triple-doubles. Before Westbrook’s run, the closest threat to dethrone Robertson was Magic Johnson, who recorded his 138th and final tripledouble on February 14, 1996 – still 43 behind the record. A triple-double is, in essence, the most pure, easy-to-understand indication of a player’s impact on the entire game: creating team possessions with offensive and defensive rebounds, driving the flow of a collaborative offense with assists and, of course, putting points on the scoreboard. As of the night Westbrook broke the record, 443 players in NBA history had recorded at

least one triple-double. Stumbling into one or two can happen – a few balls bounce your way off the rim and teammates have a hot shooting night off your passing. But making a habit of recording them has proven to be far more difficult. Only 61 players in NBA history have recorded 10-plus. Only 15 players have recorded 30-plus. Westbrook accounts for 6.4% of all triple-doubles recorded in NBA history and 20.0% of triple-doubles recorded since he’s joined the league, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The top of the all-time triple-double list is reserved for some of the greatest names in NBA history. Westbrook, Robertson, Johnson, Jason Kidd, LeBron James, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird and more. But none have done it quite like Westbrook, who is dialing up his triple-double production as his career progresses. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, he has recorded 145-plus tripledoubles in just over 350 games played. At Westbrook’s current pace, when the NBA world looks back on his career, it’s more likely that this moment will be remembered as a checkpoint than as a culmination. There is no telling how high he will set the bar for the next generation of stars, all of whom will come up in a league more conducive than ever before to eye-popping stat lines and triple-double totals. Luka Doncic, for example, is playing in just his third NBA season and is already 11th on the all-time triple-double list. But to write away Westbrook’s surpassing of Robertson’s record simply as a sign of the times would be incorrect. Even among players in the modern era, no one does it like Westbrook. Over the course of his career, LeBron James has recorded triple-doubles in 7.6% of his games. James Harden has recorded tripledoubles in 6.6% of his games. Nikola Jokic has done so in 12.5% and Doncic in 17.9%. Since entering the league, Westbrook has recorded triple-doubles in 19.3% of his games and an astounding 41.0% of his games since the start of the 2016-17 season. “I’m pretty sure if everybody could do it, they would do it,” Westbrook said earlier this season.

Westbrook played in during the shortened 2019-20 regular season. And in Washington, Westbrook’s second-half performance has led the team’s resurgence into the postseason picture. Westbrook tunes out all of the noise. “I take a lot of pride in my preparation,” Westbrook said. “I take a lot of pride in taking care of my body. I take a lot of pride in competing every night. I don’t take nights off. I don’t cheat the game. So with that, I’m OK with the results of going out and competing and if it’s a triple-double, then (expletive), why not?” “He’s only had problems with maybe a few teammates that didn’t want to play hard,” Brooks said. “Russell doesn’t get along with anybody that doesn’t compete. You don’t have to be an All-Star talent; all you’ve got to do is play hard.” Ask any one of the guys with whom he shares a locker room and they’ll speak only of a first-class leader, a culture-setter and the consummate teammate. “He’s made different,” said Ish Smith, whose relationship with Westbrook dates all the way back to their high school years. “He really is. Russ gives you 120, 130 percent, 150 percent, 200 percent every single night. On the defensive end, offensive end, rebounding – every aspect of the game. The thing I love about him is, basically, it’s a game of wills for him. (He’s) going to outlast you.” The organization commemorated the moment that Westbrook broke the record with a video tribute that included messages of congratulations from Robertson himself, Johnson, Kidd, James, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and members of the Wizards’ organization.
“I’m going to be honest; I didn’t think it was even possible,” James said. “Not only for someone to pass (Robertson) in tripledoubles, but to actually average a tripledouble in a season. And you’ve done it I think, like, 70 times? You’re incredible, bro… It’s an incredible feat. If someone had to do it, why not you?” Westbrook understands NBA history. He has shared publicly more than once how much it means to him to be in the same basketball conversations as NBA legends like Robertson and never lets one of those moments go by without praising Robertson for what he meant to the game on and off the court. Westbrook’s drive and on-court abilities have not wavered. He is playing some of the best basketball of his Hall of Fame career. At this rate, there’s no telling just how high his triple-double total will go, which milestones Westbrook will hit next, whose records will fall, or what jaw-dropping stat lines of his will own the NBA zeitgeist for a day. But for Westbrook, it’s about not about the numbers – it’s about the process. It’s about a rigid routine on game days and days off. It’s about locker room leadership and doing his part to guide a winning culture. It’s about laying the groundwork every day to succeed, over and over again. “I don’t think about (the stat lines),” Westbrook said. “I just go out and have fun and hoop. At the end of the day, when my journey is done and I’m done playing basketball, I can look back and think about some of the crazy stat lines – the good, the bad, the ugly – and be thankful. I’m grateful for it all.”
“Russell Westbrook, a tremendously gifted athlete has a great knowledge of the game of basketball,” Robertson said in the video. “He’s been so successful with his tripledoubles, it been almost unbelievable. He’s at the top of the heap…What he has done is classical and it’s going to be in the record books…I’m very happy for you, your family is very proud of you and I salute you for all your accomplishments in the game of basketball.” “What a feat,” Kidd said. “Incredible. You (passed) me a long time ago, but you’re going to go down as Mr. Triple Double.”

SCOTT BROOKS

Head Coach, Washington Wizards
SCOTT BROOKS has led the Wizards for the past three seasons after being named as head coach on April 26, 2016. Brooks has an overall record of 462-329 (.584) during his decade on the sidelines, ranking him sixth among active coaches in win percentage and eighth among active coaches in total wins. In his third season as Wizards Head Coach, Brooks’ continued record of developing players was recognized. Bradley Beal established himself as a top guard in the league posting career highs in points, rebounds and assists, while earning his second NBA All-Star nod, and Thomas Bryant flourished in his second year of play shooting .616 from the field, making him the franchise leader in field goal percentage. Brooks reached his 100th win as the Wizards head coach vs. the Houston Rockets on November 26, 2018, and the 201819 season marked only the second time in his head coaching career that his team finished with a win/loss record below .500. In his first season at the helm, Brooks led the Wizards to a 49-33 record and a Southeast Division title, Washington’s first division title in 38 years. The 49 wins were the most since the 1978-79 campaign when the Bullets finished 54-28. Brooks, who incorporated nine new players that were not onthe roster the previous season, coached his team to the highest win total in NBA history for a team that started 2-8 or worse and led the Wizards to a 17-game home winning streak (the second-longest in franchise history). With him on the sideline, Washington rallied from 17 double-digit deficits to win in 2016-17, the most in team history in the last 20 years. Brooks also made player development a priority, even among his best players: Wall appeared in his fourth straight All-Star game and averaged career highs in scoring, assists, field goal percentage and steals while Beal averaged career highs in scoring, assists, field goal percentage and games played and Porter Jr. averaged career highs in almost every statistical category. Brooks is the 24th head coach in franchise history and brings a wealth of NBA coaching experience to the organization. Brooks was the head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2008-09 through 2014-15 where he amassed a 338-207 (.620) record, tallied four 50-plus win seasons (including 60 wins in 2012-13), made three appearances in the Western Conference Finals (2011, 2012, 2014) and advanced to the 2012 NBA Finals. He was named the Red Auerbach NBA Coach of the Year in 2010. During his tenure with the Thunder, Brooks led Oklahoma City to five straight postseason appearances and four consecutive Northwest Division titles. From 2009-10 through 2014-15, he was the second-winningest active coach in the NBA, as the Thunder claimed 316 victories during this span. Brooks guided the Thunder to a 45-win season during an injury-plagued 2014-15 campaign that saw Kevin Durant, Serge Ibaka and Russell Westbrook all miss extended stretches. After starting 3-12, the Thunder finished the season going 42-25 and in doing so, Oklahoma City became just the fourth team in NBA history to go from nine games below .500 at one point in the season, to nine games above .500 later in the season. In the 2013-14 season, the Thunder finished with the second best record in the NBA at 59-23 and Oklahoma City became one of just two teams (San Antonio) to record a .610-or-better winning percentage (equivalent to 50 wins) in each of the five prior seasons. After posting the top record in the Western Conference through the first half of the 2013-14 season, Brooks represented the Thunder by coaching the 2014 Western Conference AllStars in New Orleans. The All-Star coaching honor marked the second of Brooks’ career (Brooks and his staff also coached the 2012 All-Star Game in Orlando). During the 2012-13 season, the Thunder claimed the top spot in the Western Conference after finishing with a record of 60-22. On the year, Oklahoma

City posted the largest point differential in the NBA in more than five seasons (9.2 points per game). Oklahoma City won 44 games by double figures, including 19 games of 20- or more (both tops in the NBA). The Thunder finished the season as the third highest scoring team in the NBA (105.7 points per game) while holding the opposition to the second worst field goal shooting percentage (.425).

At the end of the 2012-13 season, the Thunder became just the second team in NBA history to increase its winning percentage for five consecutive seasons (while maintaining a winning percentage of .700or- better in two seasons). During the 2011-12 season, Brooks guided the Thunder to a Western Conference championship and the NBA Finals after finishing the regular season with a record of 47-19. In the playoffs, the Thunder defeated Dallas, the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio before falling to the eventual champions Miami in five games. In 2010-11 Brooks led the Thunder to 55 wins and a spot in the Western Conference Finals after Oklahoma City captured playoff series victories over the Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies. After the late-season acquisition of Kendrick Perkins from the Boston Celtics in mid-March, Brooks guided the Thunder to a 13-4 mark in the final 17 games of the regular season. Brooks received the 2009-10 Red Auerbach NBA Coach of the Year award after his second season as head coach in Oklahoma City. During his first full year at the helm of the Thunder, Brooks oversaw one of the biggest turnarounds in NBA history. A year after winning 23 games, the Thunder concluded the 2009-10 season with a record of 50-32 (.610). The 27-win improvement was tied for the eighth largest in NBA history. Brooks was named interim head coach of the Thunder 13 games into the 2008-09 season and was later named head coach on April 15, 2009 prior to the team’s final game of the season. A day after being awarded his first NBA head coaching position, Brooks led the Thunder to their most lopsided victory of the year in the team’s season finale, a 126-85 win versus the Los Angeles Clippers at STAPLES Center. Prior to his appointment as interim head coach on November 22, 2008 Brooks joined P.J. Carlisemo and the Thunder coaching staff at the start of the 2007-08 season. Before joining the Thunder (then Seattle Supersonics) organization as an assistant prior to the 2007-08 season, Brooks spent the 2006-07 season working as an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings. His NBA coaching career began with the Denver Nuggets, where he served as an assistant coach from 200306. Brooks helped lead the Nuggets to the playoffs in each of his three seasons on the bench, with the team compiling a 136-110 (.560) regular season record.

WIZARDS MAKE STATEMENT W I T H 2 0 2 0 -21 OF F ICI A L T E A M P HO T O B y : Z ach R o s en
Every year, toward the end of the regular season, all 30 NBA franchises take part in a team photo. The coaching staff, front office, traveling party, and more join the players to commemorate the season with a photo shoot. The non-players always match, typically in formal wear, while the players don their respective teams’ jerseys as if they were ready to suit up in a game. This season, the Wizards broke from that tradition, instead deciding to make a statement with their team photo. On Thursday, none of the players wore their usual attire, instead wearing black t-shirts with one of the following three words: accountability, equality, or justice. The rest of the staff wore black to stand in solidarity with their players. Accountability from our nation’s law enforcement, politicians, local leadership, and all citizens. Equality for all, an end to systemic racism and any profiling based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or country of origin. Justice as a foundation for a safe and fair society. “It’s definitely a statement piece for us,” Wizards All-Star guard Bradley Beal explained. “Obviously, we’re a team and we do everything together. We’re still citizens of this country and this world. This is us just choosing a few words that we kind of live by, that we kind of hold ourselves to as men and as teammates. Hopefully, the rest of the world can follow suit and do the same as we try to make it a better place.” “Our players are committed, our organization is committed to continue to be allies, to continue to stand up for the oppressed, to continue to try to make this world a better place,” Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard said. “Our players are going to continue to be vocal. They will always have our support. We absolutely want to see a better world.” 18
On Juneteenth in 2020, the Wizards and Mystics joined together to protest racial injustice across the country. The theme of the march was Together We Stand, a united statement from a group of athletes unafraid to stand up for what’s right. Russell Westbrook, still with the Houston Rockets at the time of June 19, 2020, also participated in a virtual Juneteenth march that featured now Vice President Kamala Harris. “I think the significance of this year is bigger than basketball – this year, overall, has been difficult for everyone,” Westbrook said. “I think it’s amazing how we as a team are doing something a little different, having shirts that actually have substantial meaning behind it. I’m grateful to be a part of the first team to do something like that since I’ve been in the league.” “Our players are standing for what needs to be done,” Wizards head coach Scott Brooks said. “Change needs to take place and our organization has been a big proponent of backing our players and coaches. For the players to not wear the jersey like a normal photo shoot or for coaches to wear a suit… The way things are right now, I think it’s just perfect timing and I’m proud to be a part of it.” With everything going on in the world in the past year-plus, not to mention injustice spanning hundreds of years, simple statements and small gestures go a long way. The Wizards chose to make a statement with their team photo, just like they did at their Juneteenth march. The players may not be able to be out in the streets protesting during the season, but continuing to stand together, regardless of the players’ backgrounds or home countries, shows how a team can still do its part in an ever-changing world.
