BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL SPACES

BOW ROAD E3

Big ideas for small spaces infill or infilling 1. the act of filling or closing gaps, etc, in something, such as a row of buildings 2. material used to fill a cavity, gap, hole, etc To design an infill site, is to interrupt the monotonous rhythm of the uniform facades in a dense urban environment. Most cities grow like Topsy. As a result they contain many small pieces of land that have been abandoned or left over after the construction - or sometimes the demolition - of much grander schemes. Despite the impact of the Olympic games, London still has more than its fair share of these spaces, particularly to the east of the City. All too often, these plots - too small to be given the honorific of ‘site’ - are left for decades. Unloved and unused, everyone thinks that they are too insignificant or too difficult to be

of any use to anyone. We beg to differ. The following publication presents a collection of architectural designs by first year architecture students at Central Saint Martins. Each student has identified a unique function for their design that somehow benefits a specific group of individuals, and perhaps the larger community too. These physical and temporal spaces that may have been otherwise overlooked sparked our imaginations to provide a service to the young people of Bow Road, East London. With a fresh eye, enthusiasm for a new vision, and the determination to attempt to make one small part of the world a better place, we want to demonstrate that nowhere is too small to make a big difference to how we use and how we feel about our surroundings.
