Dianne Cameron (left), Anne-Maree Harland (centre) and Marie Cadogan gave the Taumarunui Club a rousing send-off women by winning the New Zealand Chartered Clubs North Island women’s golf tournament in February. Around 70 members shared a “last supper”to farewell the club, which closed on November 27 after 95 years of trading. President Jamie Harland says members enjoyed a good time and were given a brief history of the club, which opened on February 28, 1918. Although the club ceased operations in November, membership ran on until the end of February,

Karen Phelps It’s a story of hardship laced with tragedy – five West Auckland family members killed in a boating accident, then twin brothers losing their lives in action during World War I. A century later, the Henderson RSA is hoping to at last honour the graves of the Baillie family. But the RSA is having difficulty in tracking down a surviving family member for permission. Henderson RSA secretary-manager Rachel Burriss came across the story of the Baillie family when she was examining the RSA’s roll-of-honour board as part of looking to investigate the lives of some who had lost their lives during World War 1. “We were looking at ways we could mark World War 1 and make real some of those lives that were lost so that they were more than just names on a board.” She noticed that the first two names on the roll shared the same surname, and that aroused

Clubs that don’t have good up-to-date systems run the risk that their insurance claims may be declined. Most committee members do not realise this and do not realise how exposed their clubs are to fraud.
An insurance wake-up call We love working for clubs. It’s a demanding role, and, I have to say, not something ordinary accountants do well. It requires specialist skills because not only are clubs required to keep accurate records, but their insurance policies require them to have good systems. We are unique in that not only are we qualified accountants, but we are also licenced private investigators. No other accountant has that combination of skills – skills that are critical to protect your club against fraud. Clubs that don’t have good, up-to-date systems run the risk that their insurance claims may be declined. Most committee members do not realise this and do not realise how exposed their clubs are to fraud. It is the committee’s responsibility to ensure it satisfies the conditions of its insurance policies, and you cannot blame the insurance company for requiring a club to have good systems to protect clubs assets. It would be a little like trying to claim on the theft on your vehicle when you left the vehicle parked with the window open and the keys in the ignition. The insurance company would quite rightly refuse the claim on the grounds that reasonable care to protect the property had not been taken. And so it is with club insurance. If you don’t have the systems to stop a staff member helping him/herself to the bar or gaming money, then don’t expect the insurance company to pay out. This is where a good accountant comes in. A good
Joanne Newman accountant should be doing a heck of a lot more than adding up the debits and credits. A good accountant makes sure the club has systems in place that: • Accurately record the financial transactions for the year and the financial position at any time. • Allow the club to benchmark those figures against other clubs to identify when something is “not quite right”. • Make sure the club has defensive systems to minimise the risk of fraud. That’s a big responsibility on the accountant, and not something that should be asked of your ordinary accountant. It’s the responsibility of the club’s committee to ensure the club’s accountant is doing all three of these things. If the committee does not do this, the responsibility for theft comes straight back onto it.
Monitoring the money – keep a proper audit trail Risk management and ‘upping the game’ were the two key messages to come out of the recent Clubs New Zealand Conference and AGM says Clubs New Zealand president Tom Fisher. Under the area of risk management the basics of monitoring money from member to bank was a key cause for concern. “It has really surprised us that basic audit processes are not being take care of in the day to day operations of some clubs,” says Fisher who says this is an industry wide concern. “Members must have an appropriate audit trail and this is something that we are going to be helping clubs with.” Anthony Ball, CEO of Clubs New South Wales, delivered a powerful address concerning the fact that New Zealand is in an election year and reminded clubs that this is a key time for clubs to be making their views known to local members of parliament. Clubs New South Wales was successful in effectively raising key issues around gaming in Australia and Ball encouraged New Zealand clubs to raise industry concerns with local MPs. Fisher says the AGM, which followed the conference, was a relaxed affair this year with member clubs seeming to respond well to the transparent message delivered by Clubs New Zealand. “Members were extremely happy and appreciated knowing exactly where the movement is going and the direction we are taking as a board.” Fisher says clubs this year need to focus on “upping their game” and increasing levels of professionalism across the board from first

He pointed to conference speaker Amy Scott as being a shining example: “She was absolutely professional,” he says. On other issues affecting clubs this year Fisher is pleased that with recent announcements around government funding for problem gambling organisations that Clubs New Zealand has established a robust harm minimisation programme in-house. An online training programme developed by Clubs New Zealand around harm minimisation has proved popular with clubs, he says. Another announcement was the recent purchased by Clubs New Zealand of dedicated premises in Willis Street, Wellington. Fisher says this is not only an indication of the health of the organisation but also the fact that it will be able to offer members an even better service going forward.

her curiosity. She discovered that John and David Baillie were twin brothers, then further investigation revealed their tragedy was just one story in a life of hardship for the family. The boys’ father and four other family members had lost their lives in a boating accident when the twins were just six weeks old. Their mother, Agnes Baillie, was left to provide for eight children on her own. With no social welfare system to rely on, she was no doubt grateful for the support from her local community as people rallied around fundraising to help the family through tough times. Those who died in the accident were buried in an unmarked grave in the Henderson cemetery. No headstone was raised as the family desperately needed the money for more practical matters. Meanwhile the boys grew up and were drafted into the war. David was part of the Auckland Infantry Battalion and one of the soldiers who landed at Gallipoli; his wounds proved fatal. When he died on the HMT Devanha in 1915, his body was buried at sea. John, who was part of the Auckland Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion, was killed in action in 1916 at Somme and is buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery in Armentieres, France.
When Agnes died years later, she joined her relatives in the Henderson grave-site. Burriss says the family’s story struck a chord with her. “Agnes had already suffered so much tragedy; then she lost two sons in the war. If these boys had survived the war and returned to New Zealand, they might have ensured their relatives had a headstone. This is something simple we can do on their behalf to honour both their memory and that of their loved ones.” But Burriss, who has spent many nights poring over her computer researching the family story over the past two years, has hit a wall. She cannot locate a surviving Baillie family member to give the Henderson RSA permission to erect a plaque on the grave site. And time is ticking. The RSA would like to erect the plaque on August 5 to mark the 100-year anniversary of the date New Zealand joined the World War 1 effort. “This project has become a real passion for me,” says Burriss. “When I started researching, I didn’t know what I was going to find. It’s really important for us to remember and to realise it was real people like the Baillies who lost their lives.” * If you can help with information on the Baillie family, contact: Rachel Burriss, Henderson RSA, 09 8389012, rachel@hsnrsa.co.nz.

Women making their presence felt Liz England, Katherine Clarke and Arlene Solis won membership draws at the Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club in February. Currently over 3000 of the club’s 7500 members are women and the percentage of women is increasing rapidly.
Karen Phelps It was originally a male only bastion where the working class man could come for drink with mates after a hard day’s work with no fear of coming into contact with the ‘fairer sex’. But the days when clubs were a male-only zone are now long gone with women making their mark on the club scene, increasingly at executive level. Karen Phelps explores how women are bringing a new focus to club life. It’s a normal club day for Rachel Burriss, secretary manager of the Henderson RSA, when she spots a slightly dishevelled older man sitting on his own. He’s a regular but something’s not quite right. Her basic instincts click in so she sits down for a chat. Before long the man reveals to her that it’s been a week since he’s had a hot meal. Burriss immediately trots him down to the restaurant. Afterwards she liaises with a social worker and the RSA support office to ensure the man has some assistance. “As well as the business side there’s a nurturing quality that women have that’s an important part of the social side of this role. I think members are sometimes more inclined to sit down and open up to me which means I can see how they might need help. They’re more blokey around guys and they don’t need to be like that so much around women,” she thinks. It’s a sentiment seconded by Val Braidwood, president of the Alexandra District Club: “Women are often more sympathetic towards members. If anyone is sick I go and visit them which men often don’t think to do,” she says. “Women are good at the hospitality role, speaking with people and welcoming them.” The date that women were admitted to clubs varies from club to club but things progressed
from offering partial to full membership with some holding out against admitting women for a number of years. At the Otorohanga Club Incorporated for example, women were not allowed full membership at the club until 1984. Polly Cribb, a bar stewardess with 12 years’ experience was the first woman member of the club. Considering the fairly recent history of admitting women as full members the club movement seems to have come a long way. Clubs New Zealand president Tom Fisher says more women becoming involved at executive level is definitely a positive step for the organisation. “It’s good to see and women have a very open approach to things. In the past women would never have thought to get up and speak at an AGM. Now they will. It’s been a major shift in the last 15 years,” he says. Fisher thinks that women often tend to bring a more family focus to the movement whereas the main interest of men tends to be sports. “Women tend to take an overview rather than a single minded view. If you have a good female manager that will also attract other women in the club to get more involved.” So what sort of women apply for executive roles in the club movement? Age and background seem to be no discriminator with women spoken to who have
run clubs ranging in age from thirties to seventies, some with experience in running a business and some with no experience of the hospitality industry whatsoever. Burriss, who has neither a background in the military or hospitality, says that if she was looking for a woman to replace her role she’d look for someone who had good people skills first and foremost. With a background in banking and finance she says her role at the Henderson RSA is her most challenging yet. “I went through the toughest recruitment process I’ve been through in my life. Two nearly three hour interviews in front of a panel. It was a very daunting process. I’ve worked for some big multi nationals in my time but that was the hardest test.” And it is often the challenges associated with the role that drew the women Interclub spoke with to the job. “I think I realised fairly early on that the RSA movement was in a bit of trouble because we don’t appeal to the younger generation so we’ve got an ageing membership,” says Burriss. “We need to turn that around and that’s something I really believe in.” Burriss says it was her age that proved the discriminator (when she first took on the role she
was 35) not the fact she was a woman: “I’m not the first woman manager here; I followed on from another woman. I think the members initially thought I was some young office girl and it took them a long time to talk to me because I was younger than they were used to. But I think they realised that I’m here to stay and I want the club to continue to be something they can be proud of.” Balancing the demands of career and family can be tough for women taking on executive roles. Burriss, mother to a five year old son, says she often has to make hard choices: “I hate not being the person to pick him up from school. But luckily because of the nature of this role there is flexibility. “I might be able to pop away and come back as there is also stuff going on here at night I sometimes need to be here for. This makes it an easier executive role than in some other organisations,” she says. But although women are making headway into the movement a lot of committees running clubs are still male dominated. For example three women sit on a committee of twelve at the Alexandra District Club. So why are more women not taking on executive roles in the movement? “Probably because it is the history of being a working men’s club,” thinks Brenda Costello, general manager of Ashburton RSA. “I wondered how I was going to do the job when I first started but I had a lot of support with the previous club president helping me into the role. I don’t see a large difference between a man and a woman doing this role.” “Having both men and women brings balance and a different perspective,” agrees Braidwood. Says Burriss: “The RSA is used to women in these roles now. I think the role itself is very much a life choice. When you become involved in a club it’s not a nine to five role. “These members get under your skin and become a part of your life.”

Cup quiz night a winner at Upper Hutt Our intrepid photographer was on the spot when the Wellington Cup went on a tour of the Upper Hutt Cossie Club recently. Well known racing tipster and radio presenter Des Coppins hosted the quiz night and is pictured above right with the winning team of Maria and Wayne Tough, Steve Reid and Alan Child. The Cup proved a popular attraction with club members keen to get their hands on the silverware. Sisters Vivien and Josephine Lynch managed to do just that. Delegates descend on Rotorua Karen Phelps The Clubs New Zealand 2014 Conference and AGM held at the Rotorua Citizen’s Club attracted one of the largest number of delegates for years, possibly as a result of the central location for the conference, thinks Rotorua Citizen’s Club secretary manager Richard Hyland. Held from March 20-22 at the Rotorua Convention Centre the conference saw over 347 delegates from all parts of the country descend on the club to enjoy the facilities and entertainment on offer. A huge crowd gathered on the Friday night and danced the night away to entertainment provided by local band The Howard Morrison Trio, who put on a four hour show. A Bluff oyster raffle held each night proved a winner as did the delicious finger food passed

The restaurant also put on a special menu of gourmet burgers with options including Bluff oysters, mussels, steak and bacon and egg. On the second day the club put on a carvery lunch with roast beef, pork and a selection of
salads. Many delegates then spent the afternoon relaxing in the club and catching up while others chose to explore some of the sights of Rotorua. In the evening live entertainment was provided by the Chris and Chet Show. Partners of delegates were well catered for. On the Friday a bus trip took them to Wai-o-
Tapu thermal wonderland where people explored Rotorua’s colourful volcanic area including exploding geysers and bubbling mud pools. Afterward the tour continued round the blue and green lakes and Lake Tarawera before ending at Government Gardens, historic gardens that surround a Tudor-style spa bath house and an ornate Mediterranean-style public swimming pool. Hyland says the club’s 18 accommodation rooms were all full for the duration of the conference. The Rotorua Citizen’s Club also hosted the conference in 2001. “Feedback from the conference this year was that people found the club’s members friendly and that the atmosphere was great. “It was certainly another very successful conference.”

Next Payments ATM new kid on the block Next Payments ATM, a partner of global investment banking and financial services provider Macquarie Group, is the latest ATM provider to enter the New Zealand market. Boasting over 50 years of combined ATM industry and payments experience within its senior management team, Next aims to supply venues with the latest ATM technology backed by the best service in the Industry. Next Payments NZ general manager Wibo Bosma says they listened to complaints from existing ATM sites regarding poor service and support and identified a significant gap in the market to fill. “We aim to run our machines in excess of 99% availability. We understand that if the machine is down, the patrons can’t withdraw cash to spend within the venue, plus no rebate commission is being generated says Bosma. “We wanted to introduce a superior ATM solution to the market, and whilst most companies promise the best service and support, they fail to deliver nor allow the flexibility to get out of a contract if the ATM terminal is constantly down. Next promises guaranteed response times, and if not met, will pay a penalty for breaking their guaranteed service levels, Bosma advises. Some clauses within ATM contracts are also a talking point within the ATM industry. Many suppliers have a ‘rollover clause’ stating that if adequate notice, sometimes as long as 12 months, is not provided, the contract can be extended for up to five years. “Sites are being bullied into keeping unreliable ATMs on unfair commission structures. It is imperative that sites notify their provider within the required timeframe to ensure they have the flexibility to choose an alternative provider and renegotiate their commission amounts at the expiration of their

agreements says Bosma. Next Payments’ contracts do not have any rollover clauses within their contracts. “We wanted to offer the marketplace a simple, easy to understand contract absent of monthly fees, transaction fees and without sneaky clauses added Bosma. After beings established in 2013, Next Payments has gone on to acquire existing ATM supplier Cash Plus taking its total fleet to over 300 ATMs across New Zealand, making it the country’s second largest ATM provider. ATMs provide a great way for venues to dispense cash – save on EFTPOS fees, reduce banking fees, improve your staff productivity and greatly increase sales within the business. The current fleet of Next Payments ATM’s are up and running in various hospitality and convenience businesses throughout New Zealand. Bosma says customers are experiencing great service from Next Payments, including help desk support and user friendly ATM interaction for customers by offering the latest in ATM technology – a Nautilus Hyosung 2700. The Nautilus 2700, a stylish and user friendly design, remains true to the core functions of an ATM with reliability and security guaranteed. It includes touch screen functionality and secure wireless communication with a fast transaction time. Faster transactions mean more transactions, which means a greater rebate for the club. Waiheke and Coromandel highlights Sue Russell When Sheena Steele, Levin Cosmopolitan Senior Club’s Secretary/Treasurer talks about the clubs recent trip away to explore the delights of Auckland, her enthusiasm is so contagious you wish you could have been there too. Sheena, along with 19 other members of the Senior Club travelled in a luxury bus throughout the trip and savoured lots of adventures and experiences during their week away. When she thinks back to the busy fun-filled days a few highlights really stand out. “We had one Fullers trip to Waiheke Island and a 360 Discovery ferry trip to Coromandel during our time away. They were fantastic! At Waiheke Island we visited two wineries, lunched on luxury platters we were given that we weren’t expecting, complete with salmon and muscles and enjoyed listening to the history of the island,” Sheena says. The group enjoyed the trip just out of Coromandel on the narrow-gauge mountain railway known as the Driving Creek Railway and Potteries and were treated to amazing views at the top. Every year the Seniors Club heads away on a major trip. Planning begins each year at the club’s AGM in June and Sheena, along with husband John and Senior Club’s President Ross Tulloch spend the next few months organising places to go and things to do during the trip. “In Auckland we stayed in a motel opposite Alexandra Park and we went to the Auckland Trotting Clubs twilight harness meeting. On another day we climbed into our bus and drove through the suburbs where Auckland’s swanky houses are.” Sheena says the trip to Auckland Zoo was fascinating, given she hadn’t visited the zoo for many years. Scooters and golf carts were the order of the day to transport the contingent around. A visit to Freddy’s Ice House on Auckland’s waterfront meant it was time to rug up and put on gloves. The group enjoyed the amazing ice sculptures, sitting on an ice sofa and even drank cocktails from glasses made of ice. “Our bus was very big for the number of us on the trip so we had plenty of room to spread around. When we visited the Otara Markets we drove right in and the bus got stuck, requiring some tricky back-up manoeuvring to get us out. I don’t know what those at the market must have thought! Those markets must be the best in New Zealand, I was so impressed.” The club raises funds to off-set the price of some of the meals while away by holding regular sales tables where produce, cakes, books and bits and pieces are sold. The aim is to make as much as possible and usually about $3,000 is raised. While the big trips occur once a year the Seniors Club makes a point of getting out and about visiting other clubs and events on a continuous basis. “Next month we’re off to the pictures and in June we’ll be celebrating the winter solstice with a luncheon at our club,” Sheena says. Reflecting back on the Auckland trip Seniors Club President Ross Tulloch says the bus driver was

pivotal to how positively the whole week unfolded. “He was very well organised and made sure everybody was looked after.” With the happy memories of a great week away, no doubt come AGM time there will be lots of ideas floated about the next place to visit and experience next year. In August the Seniors Club will join other similar groups from Clubs all around the district at the New Plymouth Club and then will host the annual gettogether themselves in 2015.

He probably didn’t realise that his wise words would apply to clubbies on safari as well, but they certainly do. Betty Green has been organising trips for the Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club for nine or ten years now. She knows that to make them a success, she has to book enough clean and comfortable motels to keep everyone happy, but most importantly, she needs to suss out places to eat en route and on tour. Not surprisingly, many of these are club restaurants where the price is right, the food is good, and the company convivial. Standouts were Tauranga Citizens Club, and Waihi Beach RSA. Providing a bit of commercial balance, the Kwangchow restaurant in Mt Maunganui was so good, they dined there twice. Betty’s group, numbering 40, took off for Tauranga on February 16th for ten days soaking up some sights, some history, and a little bit of exercise. “Some of our members are in their nineties,” she says, “so we don’t push it.” Not pushing it includes making regular stops to refresh and relieve, and having travel days followed by doing things locally. So this trip included morning tea in Taihape, lunch at Taupo, a quick sortie to a supermarket in Tauranga, and then to the motel. “The Bethlehem Motor Inn was really good,” she reports. “It’s got a big area to turn the bus round in, and the young couple running it bent over backwards for us.” Betty was overwhelmed that managers, Matt and Saho Gartshore, did things like drive one of the group to a fish and chip shop to place the orders, then went back later to pick the orders up and distribute them. Matt took one traveller to hospital, another to church on the other side of the city, and put on a barbecue one night, drinks supplied. In appreciation, when they left, the group bought an orchid for the Gartshores only to find that on the bus, each traveller had a parcel of goodies waiting for them. Tauranga is a good base for historical tours. The Elms Mission Station dates back to the 1830s. The historic house is now a museum, with a library and chapel, and beautiful gardens with exotic and native trees. Waihi goldmine is an historic site which is still being mined in huge hole near the town centre. The Goldfields Railway adds extra spice to a trip there. Touristy trips included Katikati at the northern end of Tauranga Harbour, which is noted for the murals on many buildings; and Sapphire Pools, the Bird Gardens, and many kiwifruit orchards out of town. Kewpie Cruises offer harbour tours in a beautifully restored kauri ferry boat. The people of Tauranga lived up to their reputation for friendliness. Two of the party got lost while out walking in town. They went into a house to ask for directions back to the motel. The woman picked up her little boy in his pyjamas, bundled everyone into her car, and delivered them back safely. Sums it all up, really.

Taumarunui plans 75th jubilee bash Kelly Deeks
Travel Organiser Betty Green presents an Orchid to Bethlehem Motor Inn managers owners Matt and Saho Gartshore for their wonderful hospitality.
One of New Zealand’s most pioneering chartered clubs is this year celebrating its 75th jubilee, with a history of ground-breaking liquor licensing developments ensuring King Country club members could have a few quiets within the bounds of the law. Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club was originally established in 1939. At the time, King Country was New Zealand’s first major dry district, following a visit by prohibition campaigners encouraging local Maori to request a ban on liquor sales in the area, as provided for by the Licensing Act 1881.
Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club secretary manager Bruce Broderson says during that time, liquor sales at the club were operated on an ad hoc locker system, and there were frequent arguments with local law enforcement. The club’s first president was a catholic priest, Father Steve Conby, who was not happy about all the unlicensed clubs in the area at the time, and worked hard to get Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club licensed and operating within the laws as they existed. In 1948, renewable charters were authorised by legislation. As a dry area, clubs in King Country were

given preference to hold their hearings, and in 1950 Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club received the first renewable charter issued in New Zealand. Broderson says that got the club off to a very good start. The current clubrooms were rebuilt on the Miriama Street site in 1969. The roaring 60s were a boom time in Taumarunui, with railroads and government departments bringing hundreds of people into the local workforce and the town’s population was about 8000. At peak, Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club membership topped 1300 members. Today the work has dropped off and so has the population of the town, which now sits around 5000. Club membership is around 600, still a big business operating the town’s only TAB and a large part of Taumarunui life catering for all sports and hosting many community events. Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club started its 75th jubilee year with a bang, hosting the Ladies’ North Island Chartered Clubs Golf Tournament in February, a very successful event held at Tarrangower Golf Course. Taumarunui Club won the tournament, with Broderson saying it was great to see a local team win, however that club has since gone into recess and most of its members are now with Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club. Celebrations start on the club’s birthday, September 26, when all current and former members are invited to attend a night of food and entertainment, with a three course dinner and the Blacksmith Band. Festivities continue on Saturday, September 27, when the club will hold an open sports day and luncheon. Some special and long-serving members are expected to join the jubilee celebrations. Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club’s longest serving member, George Collins, will attend. He has been a member since 1949. Later this year, Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club has arranged an inter-club visit with Otorohanga Club, which is also celebrating its 75th birthday this year. Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club members will travel to Otorohanga on Saturday, July 26 to compete in sports tournaments, and in turn will host a visit from Otorohanga Club on Saturday, October 4.

75th jubilee `awesome achievement Karen Phelps Otorohanga Club Incorporated is celebrating its 75th jubilee, which club general manager Mark Davey says is an “awesome achievement” for a small town. It’s possibly Otorohanga’s size, with a population of around 9000 people in the district, which has helped ensure the club’s longevity and success. Davey says the club has become the social focal point of the town for many, with parents keen to sign up their kids as members as soon as they turn eighteen. “It’s a safe environment for people to socialise and totally different to going to a pub,” says Davey. “Everyone knows everyone and the members really look after each other.” Otorohanga Workingmen’s Club was started in 1939 when local man Ted Milne saw something unique in Te Kuiti. A group of men had leased a hotel and called it a Cosmopolitan Club. Milne was intrigued as to how the men had got around local liquor laws and he and his mates visited Te Kuiti for a closer inspection.

Members relax in the bar at the Otorohanga Club Incorporated. The club also offers a gaming room with the only dedicated TAB in town, popular restaurant and alfresco area (pictured below).
Amusing tales in club’s long history From page 13 They discovered that the dining room and lounge of the new club had been made into one room and the kitchen turned into a servery and washroom. Lockers were placed along a wall and members were given a key to their locker. Liquor was placed in the locker at the member’s request for their personal consumption, which was deemed to be within the liquor laws at the time although tested by the police on several occasions. Otorohanga Workingmen’s Club was started with leased buildings and 25 members. Before long other clubs started to pop up around the King Country and the law seemed to condone their existence as a lesser evil than the ‘sly grogging’ which was rampant during the era. As the Otorohanga Working Men’s club began in the year the war started many members served in the armed forces and anyone in uniform had visitor’s privileges. With the end of the second world war and the return of most servicemen by 1946 the club flourished. With the growing membership the need to secure proper premises became apparent and a brand new building was built in 1954. In the club’s history there have been a few amusing tales that have been passed down the generations. Like the time a member bought some hens at a sale and someone let them loose in the club leaving feathers and hen poop everywhere. Or the time a member’s Land Rover got tied to a railing in the car park. When he took off the rails trailed behind him leaving sparks flying off the asphalt as he drove down the road. The club was
a male only bastion until women were admitted to the club membership in 1984. Polly Cribb, a bar steward with 12 years’ experience, was the first women member of the Otorohanga Workingmen’s Club. The club changed to Otorohanga Club Incorporated in 1994 and today it has a stable and healthy membership of between 1600-1800, impressive considering the size of the town. Davey says that a key focus of the club has always been to assist worthy causes and help the less fortunate. Over the years schools, service associations, school rugby, the infirm and the aged are just some of the causes the club has supported. So what does the club offer locals today 75 years down the track? The club has a main bar, restaurant serving a la carte and bar meals including a popular Sunday roast special and a gaming room with 18 machines as well as the only dedicated TAB in town. The club hall is used for functions and also offered to non-profit and community groups free of charge. A new initiative is a ladies end of week catch up, which sees a section of the club separated out and antipasto platters served for women wanting to catch up with their mates. The club is celebrating its 75th Anniversary on Saturday 7 June and plans to hold various activities during the day hosted by club adjuncts including indoor bowls, darts, 8-ball and snooker. During the evening the club will hold a sit down meal with live entertainment. “After coming from Wellington I’ve really noticed how community driven Otorohanga is,” says Davey. “People are proud to live here and everyone knows how important the club is to the town. It’s a club that belongs to members and the community.”
New Zealand communities are being urged to create fields of remembrance with personalised white crosses to honour local people who served New Zealand overseas in World War 1. The goal is for all communities to establish fields of remembrance each Anzac Day and on the centenaries of major battles and campaigns that involved units or regiments from the region, says Ron Longley, executive director of the Fields of Remembrance Trust, established two years ago to promote, initiate and develop the project. He says the concept was proven by the creation of a field of remembrance during October 2009 at Fort Takapuna, Auckland – when 5000 white crosses commemorated the New Zealanders who died in action in Flanders. The concept has spread to Anzac Day commemorations in Christchurch, Devonport, New Plymouth, Porirua, Upper Hutt, Waipawa and Whangarei, says Longley. Another 12 communities are working on fields. Longley says local RSAs have an important role to play in the commemorations, which provide “a meaningful opportunity for all RSAs to increase their
presence and mana within their community”. Many projects and activities are planned to commemorate the centenary of New Zealand’s participation in World War 1. These will take place between August 8, 2014 and November 11, 2018 (the period of the war). Longley sees the white crosses project as an important way of commemorating the sacrifice of the New Zealanders who served, and particularly those who died. “World War 1 was one of the most significant events of the 20th century and had a deep and lingering impact on New Zealand society. “We are commemorating the service and sacrifice of our forebears.’ The Fields of Remembrance Trust was formed in November 2012 by the Passchendaele Society, the RNZRSA and the Auckland RSA. Navy man strikes a poetic chord Anthony (Tony) S.Lester, a former Merchant Navy man from Blenheim, was so inspired by a speaker last Anzac Day that he went and wrote a poem. He shared it with members at a King’s Empire Veterans meeting; they were unanimous is urging him to send it to the RSA Review to share with readers as Anzac Day 2014 approaches. Tony Lester joined his first ship as an apprentice at the beginning of February 1942. As he puts it, he had “a couple of trips across the Atlantic during the height of that skirmish, followed the troops across North Africa and all the way up Italy, finishing the war, and my time, on VE Day”. He went to pass his seafaring exams and served on British ships until he joined the Union Steamship Company and came to New Zealand in 1948. Here is his Anzac Day poem:
Not Forgotten In the Merchant Navy Club We sat against the bar, Talking much of sailors’ talk, And of this bloody war. He said that his name was Bob, I said Andy was my name, His ship was called the Compass, My ship was called the Flame. We talked on of this and that, The way that sailors do, Of ships that we had sailed in, And ports that we’d been to. Together we walked to the docks In the evening cool, And parted with a ‘Cheerio, Buy you one in Liverpool’. Next day we sailed out to sea, Our convoy place to take,
The Compass was in front of us, We sailed in his wake. We were barely two days out When an explosion rent the air, Compass had been torpedoed, They’d got her fair and square. As we sailed by the stricken ship, We weren’t allowed to stop, The crew were lowering a boat, Then a wave caused it to drop. As horrified I watched the scene, She slipped below the wave, Down to Davy Jones below, And not a soul was saved. She was not the only one Lost upon that trip, One or two ships every day, Below the waves did slip. The war has long been over, I am a captain now, And as I stand upon the bridge And gaze across the bow, I cannot help but wonder At all those down below, What a waste of ships and men, Why did they have to go? No headstone marks their watery grave With name, number and rank, No white crosses on the chart, To show where their ship sank. They lie there in the quietness, In the darkness black as jet, The world may have forgotten them But I will not forget.

V8s line up behind RSA V8 Supercars, the body behind the annual transTasman event, has confirmed the RSA as its official charity for 2014. The two organisations have been working on a number of initiatives for this year’s New Zealand leg, which will be staged over Anzac weekend (April 2427) at the Pukekohe Park Raceway. These will include the sale of poppies at the event as part of the annual Poppy Appeal, which is the primary source of funds for the RSA support services to war veterans and the ex-service community. Some RSA activities will be supported by V8 Supercars drivers; these will include a special fundraising ‘Meet the Drivers’ event on April 23 at the Pukekohe RSA, the Anzac Day dawn service at the Pukekohe War Memorial and a civic service, also in Pukekohe, at 10am. All RSA members and current servicemen and women will receive free trackside entry to the event on Anzac Day; other fundraising activities will include limited-edition merchandise and a framed poster signed by all the V8 Supercars championship drivers. offer and form a significant “RSA presence” at the raceway for what is the biggest trans-Tasman sports event. He says this would reinforce what will already be a strong RSA contingent. The racecars will all carry poppies, and the RSA will have its own special RSA display area and will pilot some new commercial initiatives. David Moger is also encouraging RSAs around the country to run V8 Supercar-themed afternoons – similar to what many of them already do for the Melbourne Cup. He sees the Supercars/RSA link as a way of promoting the Anzac spirit that lies at the heart of RSA. He says the partnership will enhance the RSA’s ability to further its support work in the veteran and ex-service communities. The RSA was formed in New Zealand in 1916 by returning Anzacs to provide support and comfort for service men and women and their families. And the V8 Supercars series is an event in the great Anzac tradition of “Aussies and Kiwis standing shoulder to shoulder – drivers, crew and spectators, commemorating and celebrating Anzac weekend together”.

V8 Supercars chief executive officer James Warburton says his organisation believes the RSA is the perfect beneficiary to help with funds because of its commitment to returned servicemen and the community. “It’s an honour to stage this event on Anzac weekend, which holds enormous significance on both sides of the Tasman. With the RSA and our event partner, Auckland Tourism Events & Economic Development, we will ensure the legend of the Anzac is respected and remembered. “We are indebted to the RSA for its support of our event and we want to partner with it to assist with its invaluable charitable programmes.” After action in the support classes on April 24, there will be an afternoon start to the Anzac Day programme, which will include a V8 Supercars 100km race. Two more 100km races will follow on the Saturday, then a 200km race on the Sunday. New locals walking through the doors of the Hokitika Chartered Club for the first time are a reflection of the extensive refurbishment done two years ago, says club secretary Donna Douglas. “Of course, we still cater to our long-term members, but it has opened the door to a lot of new members as well.” The interior of the club has a sparkling new décor with new wallpaper, paint and blinds. But one of the main changes has been to the restaurant area. The kitchen has been repositioned next to the restaurant, and gone are the days when staff had to carry plates of food through the club to serve patrons who were dining. This has resulted in more efficient service and relaxed atmosphere for members. The club has also chosen to employ its own chef, and has someone Douglas considers one of the best chefs in Hokitika. The restaurant has been decorated in earthy tones and the ceiling replaced and ambient lighting, renewed to give the room a soft glow. A kitchen equipped with the latest mod cons completes the offering. “Tasteful” and “sophisticated” is how Douglas describes the new décor, which was designed by a Coast company from Greymouth. There is also a lounge area with ottomans and a sofa for people to chill out. Black and white photos of yesteryear-Hokitika on the restaurant walls have drawn positive feedback, with many members enjoying perusing the images. The restaurant is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 5.30pm to about 9.30pm and post renovations is now typically full. Pizzas are a popular choice according to Donna Douglas, especially the chicken, apricot and cream cheese. Members also enjoy the bushman’s style platter packed with sizzling porterhouse steak, eggs, tomatoes and sausages drizzled with a creamy mushroom or garlic sauce. The restaurant offers a roast special of $9 for a half and $15 for a full, and the menu changes seasonally. Another big transformation has occurred in the bar area where the bar has been reclad in modern terracotta tiles with funky blue LED lighting. New lightshades and fittings, including a display cabinet, complete the look. The bar has been attracting a younger crowd into the club, says Donna. The club, which has two pool tables and nine dartboards, has been the venue of choice for a number of important club sports competitions, including the Hokitika Fours darts competition. Next year the club

In 2013 the Hokitika Chartered Club hosted the Clubs New Zealand South Island table tennis Tournament and in 2014, it will host the Clubs NZ South Island women’s golf tournament over Labour weekend. Donna Douglas hopes such high-profile events will enable other clubbies from around the country to see all that the renovated Hokitika club now has to offer. “The number of new members has increased by at least 25% per year since the renovations and we have such a range of members now with younger people coming through the doors,” she says. “ Members who haven’t been into the club for a while have gone ‘wow’ when they’ve seen what we’ve done. It’s helped to put the club on the map and it is now absolutely one of the best venues in Hokitika.”

A magician was just part of the entertainment for the children at the Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club’s Christmas party.
Room with a view step closer Kids christmas party best yet Sue Russell This year looks set to be another big one for New Plymouth Club on the building and development front. Club manager Lindsay Campbell says that following approval at this year’s AGM in July the longawaited extension of the club rooms and balcony overlooking the Tasman Sea will become a reality. “This project will cost in the vicinity of $4 million so we are being very prudent about not putting the club at risk in terms of our borrowing capacity.” Lindsay says it will take over a year to complete this final phase of what has been several years of building and he takes his hat off to his hard working staff and the members for coping with the disruption of almost constant building work in their midst. “By the time this final phase is completed I will be retired. Basically there’s been building going on ever since I took up the job nine years ago. We’ve got a fantastic facility and our burgeoning membership reflects this.” Not that he rests on his laurels at all when it comes to promoting the club but Lindsay acknowledges that the most powerful advertising is word of mouth, so he and his team concentrate on providing existing members with the best possible experiences. The club has a very strong 8 ball adjunct. Three junior members of 8 Ball have been selected for the Oceania Juniors tournament to be held in Sydney

in February while Des Wilcox took out top honours when he won the North Island Chartered Clubs 8 Ball Tournament. With 6000 members and between 50 and 100 joining each month the club is in very good spirits and in the spirit of giving back something to the community it belongs to New Plymouth Club annually gives out $1000 to a student from each of the five high colleges in the city, along with a $1000 gift to the food bank. The club also gives $3,000 annually each to the Cancer Society, Taranaki Helicopter Trust and to Taranaki Hospice. Members Day 2014 is scheduled for Sunday 5th October. The day is all about saying thank you to the club’s members. “The club opens its purse giving members the chance to win some fantastic prizes to the value of several thousand dollars. “It’s always a day to look forward to. Last year 1000 members turned up and we’re expecting numbers to increase each year as the event becomes more popular,” Lindsay says. The club also hosts an annual Open Day, where a special licence is gained so the club can open its doors to the public. At Open Day anyone joining on that day has the normal $20 nomination fee waived. Last year 300 new members took up this opportunity.
Boar hunt draws hunters from all over
This year’s Christmas party for the kids was the most successful to date says Desiree Garrigan, Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club’s manager. There were several reasons she says why the event went off so well. “It worked well in a new area from last year. We also brought Father Christmas in earlier and we held it on a Saturday which made a difference.” Following this success the club celebrated a ‘very big’ New Year’s Eve. “It was definitely one out of the box and to top a good year off our snooker adjunct, which was defunct, has sprung back into life and is better than ever.” Membership is sitting around 1370 and each month 40 or so new members join. Best of all, there is a younger group of people being attracted to join, something Desiree says was achieved with a lot of advertising and word of mouth. “We offer a friendly and safe environment. Young or old can come in and know they won’t be hassled.” At the opposite end of the spectrum the seniors adjunct with 130 members is very strong and active and the once a month Sunday afternoon dance group is proving popular. Desiree is intent on getting the message out
that Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club is for everybody. Reflecting and supporting this belief the club is hoping to introduce an intermediate membership category for those 14 years of age and older. Helping her run the club are “extremely friendly and dedicated staff” who like the members are looking forward to the club celebrating its 125th Anniversary. “I think we have one of the oldest charters still in use in the country so we will be making something of this milestone in the club’s history. The recent past has also bought its fair share of challenges for the club. Working through a legal battle has actually united the membership Desiree reflects. “We had some members leave and now some have come back. That is very good to see and a real confirmation that we are in a very positive state.” Visitors to Palmerston North will be made to feel very welcome at the club which is located just 100 metres from the square. It offers TAB and gaming facilities and an extensive affordable menu from Pirani’s restaurant and the club is also used on a regular basis by families and for functions such as weddings, birthdays etc.

RESTAURANT The Waitara club’s annual Boar hunt pulls in a large turnout.
During his 26 years as the Secretary/Manager of Waitara’s District Services and Citizens’ Club Murray Allen has seen lots of developments and change take place. Back in 1975 the then RSA closed heralding the birth of the Services and Citizens’ Club in its place. “We’ve continued to evolve during the years, extending the club space to cater for more people and services we offer. The club is in a very sound financial position.” Given this happy situation plans are well underway to extend the restaurant, creating the flexibility for separate functions to take place without restricting club patrons from the restaurant’s facilities. “We’ll be able to do this we expect without borrowing money. At least get the extension closed-in and the rest we’ll do as more funds are created,” Murray explains. A highlight of the club’s calendar, the Waitara Off-Shore Fishing Club competition held on February 15 had 72 boats entered carrying 170 keen anglers with a strong contingent of ‘fisho’s’ from Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club putting in an appearance. “The fishing wasn’t so good this year. I entered and caught four fish and the heaviest snapper caught
WAITARA DISTRICT was only 4 kg but a lot of fun was had and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.” The competition attracted a stunning $5,000 worth of prizes and come Easter the customary return trip to enjoy Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club’s own fishing competition will take place. Looking ahead, the club’s annual Boar Hunt held over Queens Birthday pulls in a huge turn-out and is the biggest single event the club hosts. Last year’s event attracted 72 teams of three who can hunt anywhere they like. “It’s a really popular event which we have hosted now for 8 years, having taken it over from the Rugby Club. On the Sunday of Queens Birthday all competitors must be back at the club sometime between 1 – 4 pm to enter their kills for weighing. I’m anticipating another huge number of entries again this year,” says Murray. With a full range of services and activities including a full TAB facility there’s plenty on offer for patrons and visitors alike to enjoy at the Waitara District Services and Citizen’s Club.

Themed events big hit at Wanganui Karen Phelps Don’t be surprised if you go to the Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club and see it decked out in red and black with romantic music playing to cosy couples. Or find members dressed up in flares, platforms and brightly coloured clothes. It’s all part of the club’s new entertainment offering, which club secretary manager Jenny Barber says has proved a hit since it was initiated earlier this year. “We now have a dedicated entertainment committee which aims to organise a fresh event each month for members, says Jenny. So far the club has held themed events for Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s Day and a seventies night. The Valentine’s Day event included decorations throughout the club, chocolates and flowers for sale, a photo booth, special meal options for couples at the club restaurant all accompanied by romantic music. Barber says that while the entertainment committee is brain-storming up events for the rest of the year the club welcome ideas from members for future events. Barber, who has just taken over the role of secretary manager after 30 years working in the club including 20 years as bar manager, says she hopes to bring a fresh approach to the club. The Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club has a steady membership of around 1700. The club offers a main bar with a proper barista coffee machine giving members a café style offering. Staff have completed barista training and can whip
Tilley sees `huge potential’ in Auckland Karen Phelps
The sheer population in Auckland means that it’s a big market and the potential is huge.
Recognising the huge potential of the Auckland market, Clubs New Zealand has appointed Dave Tilley in a brand new role as Clubs New Zealand general manager Auckland to assist existing clubs in the region as well as sign up new clubs to the movement. Tilley, who formerly worked as secretary manager of the Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club for over 20 years, has just moved to Auckland to take on the role. “It’s about providing a better back up service to member clubs and I will be visiting them and assisting them with any concerns or issues they may have whether that be direct assistance or pointing them in the right direction of the correct professional. “It will bring a more personal touch to communication with member clubs. “I will also be introducing myself to non-member clubs and seeing if I can get them on board,” he says. There are currently around 53 member clubs in Auckland. Tilley says he is looking forward to bringing his vast experience in the club movement to the role as well as his background in accounting and banking and believes there are big opportunities for growth. “The sheer population in Auckland means that it’s a big market and the potential is huge.”
Wanganui Cossie Club staff ham it up for the camera on Valentine’s day. up a professional coffee including latte or flat white. The main bar also offers a self-service TAB with five big screen televisions and four more screens showing Sky Sports. There is also snooker, pool, darts and indoor bowls as well as a gaming room with 18 machines.
Downstairs the club has a function centre for special events which can seat up to 70 people. The club’s popular restaurant serves up a variety of meals and bar snacks. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner. Catering for out of town members is also a speciality
for the Wanganui Cosmopolitan Club. Self-contained caravans and campervans are welcome to park in the club car park overnight and Jenny says that it’s quite a popular option for holiday makers with two to three parking up each week and popping into the club for a drink, coffee or meal.
All the ingredients for a successful club at St Johns Sue Russell Relishing his relatively new role as Secretary/ Manager at St Johns Club in Wanganui, Denis Dorgan is putting good energy into helping the club reach its full potential. Denis has a long history working in the clubs and hospitality industry and in this time he has gained some clear perspectives about what goes into making a club successful. “The challenge is to piece all the components together that go toward making the club operate profitably and key to this is finding ways to maximize turnover,” Denis says. At St Johns Club the Thursday and Friday night members draws jackpot by substantial amounts through their eight-week cycles. Thursday’s draw increases by $300 per week while Friday goes up by $500 to a maximum of $4000, something the members have responded to positively.
Reflecting on the challenges that come with managing a club, one thing Denis says that is experienced time and time again in the industry is the negatives that arise when management knows there is a problem and doesn’t do anything about it. “You see negative power-bases grow within the membership. The same can happen in the executive or committee groups especially when people see these as places to bring their own agenda.” He says it is really important that agendas are left at the door. Nor is he convinced that the structure of boards and committees is right for clubs. “Problems can end up often in the gap between the role of boards and committees.” With membership between 1,700 and 1,800 and growing St John’s Club is starting to look at the spaces inside the club, with some major development poised to begin in 2015. “We are starting to look at getting concept plans drawn up for an upgrade of the whole club. It is a substantial undertaking so we’ll be approaching in it four stages,” explains Denis. The first-stage could involve upgrading the
entrance and toilets at the northern end of the club and modernizing the surrounding area to accommodate the TAB/Sports Bar area. This will free up an area at the other end of the club to accommodate a restaurant. The biggest stage will be to create an entrance into the club from the car park. Denis thinks the Australian approach to membership is something that clubs in New Zealand should be working more towards, where the threshold to become a member is lowered and made more accessible. “You have to find ways for it to be worthwhile for people to visit the club, even if they only visit two or three times a year.” St John’s Club’s upstairs space, with its own bar facilities is being increasingly used by sports teams as a base for post-match gatherings, something Denis welcomes. “It is a real bonus for our club to have this space. We have a junior membership category so these young sports people can use the facility and it works really well.”
