‘Unbelievable outfits’ make wearable arts

112 Wrights Road, Addington PO Box 37 346, Christchurch www.waterfordpress.co.nz

Karen Phelps Outfits made from car parts, silver windscreen shades, items collected from behind the bar and lollies were just some of the creations that were showcased down the catwalk at the inaugural Bays Club Wearable Arts Awards late last year. The competition, the brainchild of club assistant manager Corina Hewitson, was born of her personal passion for the national awards. “Wearable arts are something I have always enjoyed and I’ve been to the Wellington show a couple of times. That was the inspiration to bring it to the Bays Club.” She entered the Bays competition herself, and was ‘absolutely blown away’ by the 20-plus entries across six categories: Pasifica, children, futuristic, recycled, illumination, green/environmental. The overall winner was Tanya McCabe’s arrangement of recycled car parts. Corina Hewitson’s futuristic outfit made from car window shade screens was second, and Margaret Wills’s wave-themed Pasifica entry third. “It didn’t matter too much who won on the day. All the entries were outstanding,” says Corina . “The audience was blown away by how good all the outfits were. Everyone who entered was definitely a star.” She says she asked not to see the creations before the event: “I wanted to trust and see what our members could come up with. I kept in touch with them during the process and they came up with some really great ideas.”

Some spent many months working on their designs, and the outfits that went down the catwalk were “unbelievable”. “One entrant had asked that we collect everything from behind the bar, and then made a creation from bottle tops, cans and beer coasters.” Entrants suppled their own models, and the designs were presented before a capacity audience

at the Bays Club and three independent judges. The show also included body art models, Latin dancers and singers. Feedback from entrants was positive and Corina says a member in her sixties said she had always wanted to enter a wearable arts award competition and was excited to have finally had the opportunity. The club plans to repeat the event this year and is considering opening it up to the public.

Cossie workers raise a smile for hospital kids

Children in Hutt Hospital get to know Tui and Father Christmas, and get to grips with their new teddies during the December visit from Upper Hutt Cossie staff.

Staff from the Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club are bringing some monthly cheer to Hutt Hospital’s children’s ward. They give the children small gifts, entertain them with the club’s mascot, Tui, and Buzz, dress up as clowns or fairies, and do face-painting. Father Christmas also came along for the December visit. The visits, all voluntary, are part of the club’s commitment to engage with the local community., says Upper Hutt Cossie’s events co-ordinator, Melissa Sadler. To see the smiles on the children’s faces is overwhelming, she says “There are children there with major burns whose lives must be very miserable. But as soon as Tui or Buzz appear, their smiles light up the ward.” The club also linked up with a Hutt Valley support group to organise and host a Christmas party for needy families. Cossie staff volunteered their time and organised businesses to donate goods as presents for the families. Buzz, Tui and Father Christmas did their thing, and the staff ran a barbecue, games, face-painting, a bouncy castle, and colouring-in. Cossie staff have also helped the local council community clean-ups to remove graffiti and rubbish from streets and noxious weeds from around the Hutt River.

Conference part of support plan Helping club committees, managers and staff to a better understanding of their individual roles in clubs is the major theme of the 2013 Clubs New Zealand conference/annual meeting in Invercargill from March 22-24. “There have been blurred roles occurring in some clubs and we want to support club managers, committees and staff to a better understanding of their value in the movement,” says Clubs New Zealand chief executive officer Larry Graham. “The major focus now is on helping clubs with governance and operation, and providing more support.” Several speakers will seek to provide advice to clubs on these matters. Clubs NZ lawyer Michael Quigg will deal with what can happen if clubs do not handle legal matters correctly. Stuart Spiers, from Clubs New Zealand Insurance, will seek to help clubs understand how to reduce premium costs through better understanding their role and responsibilities. And Tony Hassed, who specialises in board training, will address the importance of developing a sound understanding of individual roles. Larry Graham says these issues have also been faced across the Tasman, and the thoughts of Clubs Australia chief executive officer Anthony Ball should be of particular relevance. He will talk on the challenges faced in Australia and the answers they have come up with. Clubs NZ will follow up with new training opportunities, says Larry Graham. “There is currently no qualification standard for committee members, and this is something we will be developing and hope to offer from mid-year to raise the bar in terms of professionalism. The qualification will cover human-resources management, strategic planning and understanding financial matters.” Another key issue of the conference will be the ongoing issue of ensuring clubs remain relevant to the next generation. A panel discussion involving a number of local, young people is expected to inspire lively debate and interesting feedback. “This will be a very interesting insight for clubs into how the younger generation thinks and what they would want from a club. All of these local, young people aged in their 20s have visited a club

and we will be giving them the opportunity to tell us exactly what they would do if they could run a club themselves. This will help us all to gain a real insight into what young people would look for. It ill be vital information to take the movement forward and we hope it will result in some great ideas that clubs can implement.” Graham hopes the information, insights and opportunities provided at the conference will help to the growth of Clubs NZ to continue. “We had growth in the past couple of years on the back of a poor hospitality environment. It’s a great result and now it’s important we enhance the culture around governance and continue to build on what has been achieved in terms of attracting the next generation. What clubs do with the information from this conference will be vital.”

The John King Memorial Invitation Masters pairs event, run and hosted by the Waikanae Chartered Club 8 ball adjunct, has become a very popular event on the calendar for over-50s pool players Rod Foster says a near-capacity field produced a very high standard of play, which made for exciting and absorbing pool in the play-off rounds. Many contestants return each year. This year’s winners were Lionel Wairepo and Stan Cadman, who beat Mark Beveridge and John Te Huna in the final. Peter Hovell and Emily Gray beat Fred Tuuta and Bruce Johnson to win the plate. Support from the local business community in the form of table sponsorship, and financial support from the club enabled the total prize pool to be increased by $500 this year. The club made its facilities available for the tournament which was hitch-free Rod says tournament controller Trist Reweti was also a tremendous factor In ensuring there were no delays or hold-ups, while Rob Anderson, the secretary and official referee (with his stop-watch) did a great job in helping everything run to time. Interest in clubs ‘never greater’

Pinching from the till I would be a wealthy woman if I had a dollar for every person who blamed discrepancies between the cash takings and the till tape on “over-rings” – charging more on the till than the actual value of the sale. If an over-ring occurs, always get a senior to sign it off – immediately, on the spot. If staff know you are managing the till (which is a nice way of saying you are watching them like a hawk), they will think twice about putting their sticky fingers into the cash register. Here are some of the more common ways staff fiddle the till: • Giving incorrect change. For example, a staff member is handed a $10 note but gives change to a partner in crime for a $20 note. • Ringing off a sale as a “mistake” or an overring or a credit. The mistake conveniently ends up in the staff member’s pocket. • Ringing up only four drinks instead of the five or six ordered. I recall a classic case where a barman was not all that flash with numbers, so every time he fiddled the till he would write the amount in a notebook. Nobody noticed his scribbling, nor the notebook which he hid under the bar cleaning cloth. No-one suspected anything was amiss until the sums involved became so large that questions were raised. Fortunately the offending was captured on the surveillance camera, which together with the notebook, provided all the evidence required. Game over. Conviction secured. Reparation received. • Others have more imaginative ways of “accounting” for their ill-gotten gains. It goes a little like this. They keep a running total in their head until

they reach $5 or $10, then take an object of their choice (including pens, straws, cocktail sticks and toothpicks), and place it in a glass. At the end of their day’s work, they count the number of items in the jar to work out how much the till “owes them”. • I have also seen staff drop money on the floor and put it straight into their handbags, or slip it into their bar apron or pocket. There are lots of more sophisticated ways staff fiddle the till, but those I have mentioned seem to be what thieves learn when they attend the “Introduction to pinching from the till” course. There are some of the very basic things I suggest when putting till security procedures in place. I will address those in a future column. • Joanne Newman is a specialist in club accounting and forensic auditing. She is the managing director of Club Accounting & Investigations Ltd and Smart Business Centre (Tauranga) Ltd.

Welcome to a new year in the club movement. There is no doubt that after a challenging 2012 in a number of key areas, there are some exciting times ahead. The Alcohol Reform Bill has been passed by Parliament with limited changes. This means that not a lot will change for clubs. However, as there have been some subtle changes, club managers, presidents and executive members must be aware of the interpretations. The changes don’t come into effect until the end of 2013, so we will be working with the relevant authorities to ensure all our clubs understand the new legislation. Training and support will be co-ordinated through our new business development manager, Dianne McKellar. We have contracted professionals in key areas to provide targeted information and training to ensure we are all getting it right. As usual, police stings continue in all hospitality outlets, and clubs must be vigilant when strangers (non-members) enter the premises. It is the same old story: ask them for identification or sign them into your club before serving them at the bar. I’m sure it’s something most of you are already doing, but it is worth a reminder as it is so important. Our Clubs New Zealand insurance scheme, through Abbotts, of Christchurch, continues to be a success story. If you are not on the scheme, please give us a chance to quote on your club insurance. This scheme is assisting us to maintain the present capitation level and could mean considerable savings for you. Sport, along with the TAB, continues to be our major entertainment area in clubs. The recent lawn bowls tournament run by the Tauranga Citizens’ Club was very successful, with 196 teams entered. It was

won by the Papanui Club, with Tauranga Citizens’ the runner-up. Golf, darts, 8 ball, snooker, dancing, petanque, fishing, and texas hold’em, plus 10 other sporting adjuncts continue to assist in maintaining a good level of members in our clubs. With close to 4000 staff directly employed by its members. Clubs NZ is arguably the biggest membership-based hospitality organisation in New Zealand. The recently established development section will see a major drive in on-line training for club management. Training includes qualifications in bar, food, waitressing and managers to level 5. Dianne McKellar will be assisted by Lucy and Gus. Head office is focusing on assisting member clubs to increase their business. As a movement, we are reaching around 450,000 Kiwis who are becoming converts to the club way of life. This figure continues to grow as clubs improve their offering and meet public demand. There has never been greater interest in clubs. We need to be ready. I look forward to seeing you at the conference/ annual meeting in Invercargill.

The winners with their spoils: Above left, Papanui (Moase Cup). Above right, Papatoetoe (Jim Dempsey Trophy). Lower right: Oamaru (Kelly Plate).

Clubs event biggest in country With 196 fours competing, the 40th Clubs New Zealand men’s national was the largest outdoor bowls event in New Zealand this season, says tournament convener Roger Booker. The tournament was staged in the Tauranga area over February 4-8, 2013. The games were played at nine clubs - Gate Pa, Katikati, Matua, Mount Maunganui, Omanu, Omokoroa, Tauranga, Tauranga South, and Te Puke. All greens were in top condition. The major sponsors were United Gaming Ltd, Heartland Bank, the Lottery Commission and the Hyundai Lion Brewery. Roger says the organising committee received wonderful support from the management and staff of the host Tauranga Citizens’ Club. The catering and hospitality at all host clubs was excellent, and the committee was very grateful for the willing assistance and co-operation from the numerous volunteers at each club. On the playing front, G.McDonald (Papanui) improved on his runner-up performance by winning the Moase Cup 21-19 from P.Clark (Tauranga). Roger Booker describes the 21-end final at Tauranga South as outstanding, with superb draw bowls by both teams. In the semi-finals McDonald beat B.Gibson (Johnsonville) and Clark beat B.Kelly (Oamaru). The Jim Dempsey Trophy went to T.Klarichs (Papatoetoe) after a hard fought 17-16 semi-final

win over B.Winterburn (St Johns Wanganui) and a 23-16 final victory over P.Young (Taradale). After eight rounds of section play from Monday to Wednesday, the two top sections (Moase Cup and Jim Dempsey Trophy) played a one-life draw on the Thursday to determine the semi-finalists. The non-qualifiers (136 of them) played for the Kelly Plate. These 1½-hour games were spread across five venues on the Thursday, with the winning team from each venue making the semi-finals and finals on the Friday. In addition to the winners, Roger Booker notes that the Oamaru Club, which hosted the tournament last year, had three teams playing for the titles on the Friday. Next year’s tournament will be hosted in Wanganui by the by St John’s Club.

A ‘phenomenal’ year It has been another phenomenal year for the club movement. To expand our business and return a surplus to members is a satisfying result. We are particularly pleased with the growth in RSA membership – now more than 80 clubs. Membership in general rose 1.3% last year and there has been a 1.7% increase in the number of member clubs. Around 285,000 people are now financial members of Clubs New Zealand clubs. The results are gratifying as they have been achieved in a tough year for the hospitality industry. Clubs that have enthusiastically embraced the new hospitality environment have experienced the best results. The culture in our clubs is changing; many have placed greater emphasis on increasing hospitality options for members, including quality entertainment for all the family. Most clubs have upped their game in terms of their restaurants and food. As menu choices improve, more people are going to clubs and eating meals there. Clubs are now being seen as a nice place to take the family. We hope our scholarships for staff will keep the excitement and competition alive so that everyone benefits. While the financial health of our organisation is important, how we spend our money becomes an important debate. The time is here for us to strengthen our brand, and investment in a national marketing strategy is worthy of discussion. Interest from government agencies We are experiencing increasing interest from government agencies and local authorities, in particular the Department of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Health. They now have a better understanding of clubs and how we are different from pubs. That’s important, and perhaps we have been a little guilty of allowing people like Bruce Robertson (Hospitality New Zealand group), speak on our behalf without a mandate from us. The interest has arisen from the significant number of submissions we made the last year on industry issues, including the Gambling Harm Reduction Bill, the Alcohol Reform Bill, the Food Bill and the Law Commission review on incorporated societies.

Larry Graham

Chief executive, Clubs New Zealand

We have spent a considerable amount of energy and resources communicating with bureaucracies to ensure clubs are not confused with pubs. Although there is still work to, it’s satisfying to see this slow but important change. In publicly noting that clubs have demonstrated they provide a safe environment for patrons, Problem Gambling Foundation chief executive Graham Ramsey said: “We can’t see why clubs are lumped together with pubs. Clubs have an ethos that they are there for their members, and they have invested heavily in training and other additional tools.” New business development manager Clubs NZ has appointed a new business development manager to help clubs with training. Dianne McKellar’s most recent role was as clubs adviser for the Hospitality Standards Institute. She was previously administration manager for the Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club where she was involved in club management, and took responsibility for staff training and development. Her role at Clubs NZ is leading the training and education strategy, and ensuring that member clubs have access to relevant training for staff and members of their executives. This appointment is evidence of the movement’s focus on providing clubs with relevant training for staff. This is something we take very seriously and are strongly committed to.

Karen Phelps A Hamilton street-name has been changed to honour a New Zealand war hero – soldier/artist Sapper Horace Moore-Jones, known internationally for his Man with the Donkey Gallipoli painting. This is the first recognition of Moore-Jones in New Zealand, despite his international ranking . Moore-Jones, who was Hamilton High School’s first art master, died heroically on April 3, 1922, rescuing others from a fire that destroyed the former Hamilton Hotel and took two other lives. He twice returned to the building to help save other guests Newspaper reports and the coroner’s findings on the fire – the worst in the city’s history – describe Moore-Jones’s heroism as “living up to the highest ideals of Anzac, giving his life for others”. Marlborough Place, a central city cul de sac that forms the southern boundary of the old hotel site, has been renamed Sapper Moore-Jones Place, and a plaque unveiled by governor-general Jerry Mateparae. The Hamilton City Council has approved the erection of a Moore-Jones commemorative statue for Anzac Day 2014. The naming ceremony was attended by MooreJones descendants from Auckland, Tauranga and Australia, plus the son of Richard Henderson, the Waihi field medic Moore-Jones memorialised in the famous Anzac painting. A 100-year-old 16 Waikato Regt flag from Gallipoli, now owned by Hamilton Gallipoli historian Richard Stowers, was used in the unveiling. MooreJones was among the Waikato men who, as part of the Auckland Infantry Battalion, were the first Kiwis on the ground at Gallipoli. Hamilton Boys’ High School pupils performed extracts from a play by local writer Campbell Smith about Moore-Jones’ death; the full play was performed the same day. Waikato Museum also exhibited Moore-Jones’ Anzac painting and his 100-year-old korowai, given to him in London in 1912 by Te Arawa socialite and scholar Maggie (Makereti) Papakura as thanks for his support of her concert party at King George V’s coronation and Festival of Empire. The recognition of Moore-Jones was initiated by the TOTI Charitable Trust to mark the 150th

Moore-Jones: met the highest ideals of Anzac. anniversary of the Waikato War of 1863-64 and the centennial of Gallipoli and World War 1. Trust member Margaret Evans, a former mayor of Hamilton, says he is “clearly one of our greatest heroes and his artistry was hugely influential in that campaign”. “The creative element is one of the most important elements to human beings. It’s what makes civilisations great. It is the spirit of the people that is important to nourish, including in war. We started talking about the saying, ‘We shall remember’, and how important it is to learn from the lessons of history. Because we live in an age where celebrity is everything, we came up with the concept of finding some of our own hidden heroes with messages still relevant to society.” Moore-Jones enlisted with the engineering corp and was among the first Anzac soldiers on the ground in the April 1915 landing on Gallipoli Peninsula. The Allies had no reliable maps and he crawled behind enemy lines to provide precise battlefield sketches of enemy positions and terrain to guide gunners and plan defence. He was also sent to Cairo to provide information to intelligence about enemy lines. His hands were injured and he was transferred to London where, in 1916, he developed and exhibited

Anzac father inspires poet Wendy Joy Baker has been writing poetry for eight years – and Anzac poems for six years. She says her Anzac poetry is driven by her loyalty, her respect and her admiration for her war-veteran father, and for all people who have served in and experienced war,. Wendy marches on Anzac Day, and last year presented poems at Anzac services in Waipukurau and Napier. She recalls Anzac days when she and her mother proudly watched her father march. Her 2013 Anzac dedication, Hearts on the line, was written at the Invercargill Cenotaph (right) on February 28, 2013. Baker, who has recently moved from southern Hawke’s Bay to Southland, describes poetry as one of her “creative passions”, and writes for the love of it. You can read all of her Anzac poems – and some of her other work – on her website (www. hawkesbaynz.net/wendyjoybaker).

AIMING TO BEAT THE BIG GUNS Fountain Drinks is a hospitality industry sharp shooter in the competitive field of postmix. The aim is to have clubs and bars switch to a 45 postmix system by demonstrating the significant cost savings available when bars use the Fountain range of drinks. “If each club would give us the opportunity to carry out a cost comparison between what they spend on postmix over one month with what it would cost to use our 45 range of drinks, we could be saving that club 40% plus on their expenditure”, says Gary Robertson of Fountain Drinks. “We can carry out a free no obligation cost comparison on each drink available at the postmix gun, or perhaps more telling, a comparison on what you are spending on the full range of postmix and bottled drinks”.

dispensing equipment. We maintain these standards through regular system maintenance, which includes proper insulation of lines, a correctly sized ice-bank and attention to obtaining consistent drink temperature of below 5 degrees at all times. A combination of technologically advanced equipment and quality drink syrups delivers superior fizz and reliable drink delivery at each postmix gun”. “We deliver the 45 range within 24 hours from the time of order”, says Gary. “And your replacement syrup bags and boxes are quick and easy to clip in place by your bar staff, no mess, no fuss”. 45 at the point of a gun will reduce costs and provide significantly improved bar profitability. For more information phone Fountain Drinks 0800 44 44 03.

Fountain Drinks delivers 8 postmix flavours at each gun from 14 flavour choices, including lemon lime and bitters and new 'energy', plus soda and chilled filtered water. 45 syrups are produced by Fountain in New Zealand from local and specially imported ingredients from the USA for cola, orange juice and energy drink. Phil Saul of the Howick Club says, “I’m a very satisfied customer. The price of 45 syrups from Fountain Drinks is way below what I could buy elsewhere, and the quality, product delivery and support is outstanding”. Fountain postmix drinks are backed by a free regular equipment maintenance programme. 45 Fountain postmix is one of the highest quality gun and state-of-the art dispensing system available and requires no capital outlay. The system is set up quickly and efficiently by professional installers operating throughout the country. “At Fountain we are extremely pedantic about quality drinks”, says Gary Robertson of Fountain Drinks. “We achieve these high standards by using top quality ingredients for our syrups and the latest

Longevity of staff, members brings ‘a very stable sense’ to Wang Cossie

Waitara T & C enjoys golden age Sue Russell Nigh on 60 years ago a group of Waitara businessmen were getting together to form the Waitara Town and Country Club. Christine Roberts, a current committee member and very much involved in the 60th jubilee planned for July, describes the 2013 model as “the happy home-base club for its 800 members”. “We’re known for our very friendly and welcoming atmosphere,” says Christine. “I’ve had visitors contact me from other clubs saying they were blown away with how they were made to feel at home in our club.” She’s promising that the five days set aside to celebrate the 60-year journey will be a lot of fun, with plenty happening. “We’re going to have something going on each day from Wednesday, July 3 (the actual anniversary of the club’s founding), through to the Sunday, including extra prizes on our Wednesday draw night, a dinner and a show on the Saturday.” The jubilee will culminate in an open day with music on Sunday, July 7. The committee is keen to encourage a new younger breed of member, and there’s a warm welcome guaranteed for any of that ilk who walk through the club doors to check it out. Christine says the Waitara Town and Country

Club is in a good financial position, with only a very small debt that it is comfortably paying off. This has put it in a good space to devote energy towards attracting more members. A move last year by some former committee members to seek potential amalgamation of the club with another in Waitara was overwhelmingly opposed by members. Christine thinks this potential crisis point has, in a way, breathed spirit into the club.

“We made it clear we didn’t want to merge as we’re a completely different club from the other one, and we’re proud of our atmosphere and identity in this town.” After last year’s annual meeting, a new committee formed, and she says it has gone about the business of taking care of a club whose heart is in very sound order. “We’re not a huge, fancy club, but our loyal followers have plenty to do if they wish and, as a committee, along with our secretary/manager, John Murphy, we’re doing everything we can to keep it all going well.” Ten years after the club’s formation in 1953, one of its original members left a legacy of 3000 pounds, a huge sum at that time, for improvements to the club. That almost met the whole cost of buying the original building, from where the club still operates. Various additions and redesigns have made the club a popular venue for weddings and private functions, and give it the ability to accommodate a host of activities for members. Details on 60th jubilee celebrations: Phone Christine Roberts (06 7547139); email the club (waitaratandc.club@xtra.co.nz); visit the clubrooms (33-39 West Quay, Waitara).

Now in its 121st year, Wanganui Cosmopolitan (photo below) is one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand. With a membership of 1700, it is in a good situation – though, like most clubs, the “regulars” account for about 10% of this number, says secretary/manager David Tilley. “We’re a club with a very stable sense to it,” he says. “Our bar manager, Jenny Barber, has been with the club for the last 25 years and I’ve been here 20.” Four years ago the club expanded the kitchen and dining room, and he says a wide range of meals, from snack-type food to roasts, is served regularly. “The Friday-night membership draw is our most popular night. We’ve also moved away from having regular bands and, instead, we focus on bringing big shows to the club. This has gone down well with the membership and seems to be working well for us.” David is connected with the national governance of Clubs New Zealand as the area board member for Taranaki/Wanganui/Manawatu and chairman of the organisation’s finance sub-committee. He sees a big part of Clubs NZ’s time being spent on lobbying and submissions to Parliament on gaming and liquor issues. “We were heartened with the response from our membership clubs on the Flavell Gambling Amendment Bill, with a substantial number of submissions sent in opposing it. The bill proposed sweeping changes to how gambling proceeds would be administered. It is things like this that we’re concerned with for the membership we represent across the country.” He is looking forward to presenting a very healthy financial picture of the organisation to this year’s Clubs New Zealand conference and annual meeting in Invercargill from March 22-24. One of the benefits of this situation is that the Clubs NZ board will be recommending there should be no increase in the current levy paid by its member clubs. “We’ve managed our funds carefully, and that has meant we’re in a strong financial position. In these challenging times for the industry, that’s a very good place to be. Wanganui Cosmopolitan is one of five clubs in Wanganui. Which, says Dave Tilley, presents challenges for a town of that size; but each club has found its own identity and a core membership ti fit.

Club founder last of the originals A group of South Taranaki Tourers has kicked their club’s 20th anniversary year into gear with a five-day ride around “the top of the South”. The origins of the group – which is an adjunct of the South Taranaki club – date back to 1993 when Roger Malcolm and a few friends rode in the Cold Duck rally. Because they were all on Japanese bikes, they were called ‘The Jap Crap Boys’ by the other riders. Roger wasn’t overly impressed with that name and, after some discussion, they formed the South Taranaki Tourers. Seven years later he approached the South Taranaki Club and the Tourers became an adjunct. In the same year, 2000, the club held its first rally, the Clubman 2000. Roger Malcolm is the only original member still affiliated to the club. The Tourers’ current president, John Elmes, says membership now sits around 60. A monthly newsletter reports on rides, club members and upcoming events. In the club’s annual Poker Run rally, entrants draw a card at each of five stops and whoever has the best poker hand at the end wins the $500 stake. It has become something of a “must do” event in recent years, attracting up to 95 bikes and riders from many parts of the country. The Tourers’ annual “hard arse” event involves breakfast at a specific destination and a ride of at least 800km. They also try to have an overnighter ride each month, and take part in several charity rides (the Coast to Coast and Chateau to Plateau are two) to help community causes such as the rescue helicopter.

As 2012 was the South Taranaki Club’s centennial year, the Tourers decided to have a Show’n’Shine on a Friday night. Thirty bikes were on display for

Over Sixties ‘big family’ get out and about for good times

They sure know how to have a good time at the Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club. This joke from the club newsletter gives an indication: “A doctor on television said that, to have inner peace, we should always finish things we start, and we will all have more calm in our lives. I looked around my house to find things I’d started and hadn’t finished. So I finished off a bottle of merlot, a bottle of chardonnay, a bodle of jin, a butle of wum, tha mainder of valiuminun scriptins, an a boks a chocletz. Yu haf no idr how fablus I feel rite now.” Another indication is the regular good times the Over Sixties adjunct has on its trips. One of the organisers, Lorraine Jones, says they arrange a fortnightly or monthly day trip away, unless they have a group from another club coming to spend time with them. Then every year, usually in March, they march off – well, they bus off, actually – to some far flung part of New Zealand, or that island off the West Coast with all the bananas and funny accents. The yearly trips are usually for a week. Adjunct

members suggest places they might go, and the committee makes its decision. Then members offer bright ideas about motels they know of, good places to eat (or drink), and interesting places to go while they are there. This is where another of the organisers, Betty Green, comes into her own. “She’s good on her computer, so she can do all the bookings,” Lorraine says. “She’s so helpful. I’m supposed to be the secretary, but when I wasn’t well last year, she did most of my work as well!” And that seems to be the way this group works. Camaraderie is the thing. Of the 86 adjunct members, some are quite elderly, and don’t get out much, so this gives them something to plan for. New members join from time to time, and haven’t been to some of the places the group has been to already, but that’s no problem. If they had a good time there before, then they go there again. One of the group, Paul Richardson, is a bus driver, and he takes them anywhere they decide to go. “Were like one big family, says Lorraine. “We have a lot of fun.”

As John Elmes says, some observers would have noticed that not all bikes are equal – the display included sports bikes, cruisers and classics, along with a few trikes for good measure. Budget-beaters level their sights on stage 2 Sue Russell There’s nothing like the satisfaction that goes with seeing major development of your club delivered on time and coming in under budget. That’s the happy experience of New Plymouth Club manager Lindsay Campbell and the committee overseeing stage 1 of a two-stage building project, aptly named WoW. “There was excellent co-operation between management and the contractor, Cleland Contractors, all the way through the project,” says Lindsay. “This significantly impacted on the project costs exceeding our expectations in terms of cost savings. It was enough to make you smile.” Work on the $1.6 million project began in February last year in the upstairs function areas. Stage 1 is mostly completed – the air conditioning, sprinklers and an acoustic ceiling are complete, with only the extensions to the bistro cooking area and the area rented to the Accident Compensation Commission to be finished. Approval to go ahead with stage 2 – the extension

Lindsay is very proud of the stoic support the club has received from its members while work has been going on. Members have continued to visit the club, even though at times it looked like a construction site. “The members were brilliant. We brought in a mobile bar while bar refurbishments were under way. Our patrons fitted in with the changing spaces and it was very heartening to have this support.” With 5500 members New Plymouth Club is on a solid financial footing. Eight years ago it spent $4m on significant renovations and refurbishment, including the building of an auditorium. The repayment of that cost prompting the committee to look afresh at new visions for the club. The WoW project was given birth out of this process.

Two years ago Lindsay Campbell made the decision to move away from independent contractors operating the bistro to staff employed by the club. It was a significantly important decision, and it has which has paid off, he says: “Since taking over the club’s food operation, the bistro has gone from strength to strength and has enjoyed a huge increase in patronage. Being able to market our own catering rather than have a contractor only interested in operating in the prime times has not only proved popular with members, but having the right specials and choices has proved lucrative for the club.” Catering for large functions is not a problem either. The last wedding at the club hosted 304 guests, all fed from the bistro. The bistro is open six days a week – Tuesday to Sunday – from 11.30am to 9pm. A glance at the club’s website shows how much life goes on both inside and outside its walls. Dancing

in all its forms is especially popular, alongside indoor and outdoor bowls, golf, fishing and cards. The club even sports its own male choir. Several shows have been booked for 2013, including The Animals in October and a country music special on August 31 with Kevin Greaves, Dennis Marsh, Jodi Vaughan and Brendan Dugan accompanied by the Midnight Special band. Hypnotist Andrew Newton returns on June 8-9, a monthly jazz concert is scheduled, and there will be concerts by New Plymouth’s orchestra, brass band, pipe band and various choirs. The club supports the community in some significant ways. Every year it donates $3000 each to the Cancer Society, the Taranaki Helicopter Trust and

It also makes grants of $1000 bursaries to each of the five colleges in the district. “Each school chooses a student whose family is in a situation where that money will be really useful,” says Lindsay. “We meet the recipient students on one of our Thursday members’ draw nights. They say a few words; it gives our members firsthand experience of where some of their money is directed.” He says the club (49-55 Gill St) is in the heart of New Plymouth, close to motels and the main shopping centre. CLUBLIFE: CLUB WAIMEA/RICHMOND BOWLING CLUB

Bowlers say one club’s definitely

better than two Club Waimea had a liability – a failed bowls adjunct and a dilapidated, synthetic green; the Richmond Bowling Club was falling into a hole – struggling with falling membership, rising maintenance and compliance costs, and expensive-to-keep grass greens. It took a while to get there, but the two bowls groups have come up with the answer. Richmond has managed to sell its property and has redeveloped the Club Waimea facilities. And both two parties rate the get-together and merger a success. The official opening of the new facilities, clubhouse and green at Club Waimea on November 30 last year was the culmination of their combined efforts. Over four months, volunteers and contractors produced a new and modern synthetic green, ringfenced it and redesigned the surrounding area, and replaced the clubhouse with a larger, more modern, upmarket building. While the removal of the old carpet from the green

was a huge and heavy task, the ground surface underneath was in exceptional order – a credit to the original members who constructed the surface. The clubhouse is home for the bowlers on bowling days; it is equipped with a small kitchen/ servery, office, storeroom and a small bar operated under Club Waimea’s licence and staffed by Club Waimea. Club Waimea has the right to use the rooms for meetings or functions, mainly in the evenings. The green is the responsibility of the Richmond Bowling Club, which will maintain and replace (expected to be about every 20 years) it from Richmond’s own funds; under Club Waimea rules, Richmond (as a registered incorporated society) has the right to manage its own finances and affairs. It also has the right under the “heads of agreement” to add a second green if numbers dictate. The Richmond Bowling Club was formed in 1919 in Lower Queen St; first there was one grass green, then a clubhouse, then two greens and a much larger clubhouse as membership grew. At its peak the club

had 150 members and you had to book ahead to get game time. But membership fell and costs rose until, about seven years ago Richmond was forced to decide whether to battle on with the grass greens (costing $20,000-plus a year to maintain), and against rising running costs.

The club puts its land on the market, but the real estate market was in a trough and the list of potential purchasers was very limited. Richmond began talking to Club Waimea and entered into merger negotiations. The project got a major boost when the Richmond land was sold to the Metlifecare Retirement Village. No doubts about this sound Neil Grant It takes more than an earthquake scattering club members across the province to keep a good travel adjunct down. Eleven Richmond Club travellers took off on a southern jaunt in late September. Driver Jeanette Bainton, who lives in Kaiapoi, picked up the Mauger Mitsubishi Sprinter minibus the night before, and at 5.45 next morning set off to round up the others. “We weren’t on any timetable, so I went through Papanui, Brighton, Heathcote, Barrington, Cashmere, Addington, then out to Southbridge,” she says. They lunched at the Moeraki Boulders, had dinner at the Gore Town and Country Club, and arrived at the Te Anau Village Motor Inn at 9.30pm. Luckily, Jeanette likes driving. Day two was a recovery day in Te Anau...walks around the town and to the lake, and a visit to the local pie shop. The scenery was nice, but the pies are apparently superb. A round trip the next day took in Manapouri, Riverton for lunch, Invercargill because it was there, and the Te Anau Club because it was dinner time. The nine who had opted to go on an overnight Doubtful Sound trip were picked up about 11am next

day, taken to Manapouri, boated across the lake, bussed over Willmot Pass, and boarded on the boat for the journey down the sound . This was a real highlight for Jeanette. “The food was beaut and the whole trip was lovely. Some of us went out in canoes, while others went swimming. Then we swapped over. “It was so peaceful. At one stage we went up an inlet, they turned off all the motors and fridges and things, and all you heard was silence. There weren’t many birds even. “At night, you could see all the stars. It was lovely. Because it had been raining, the waterfalls were super. The boat backed under one, so we collected water from it in cups.” The overnighters returned on day five, and the group set off for Alexandra. Arriving at the Alexandra Motor Inn, they were greeted by new owners who, although still settling in themselves, looked after the travellers well and made sure they were comfortable. From Alexandra they explored Clyde and Cromwell on one day, then the next day St Bathans with its blue lake and allegedly haunted hotel, Ranfurly, and Naseby (where.a little museum on a farm held a lot of appeal). On the last day, the bus set off from Alex’ at 8am and headed through the Mackenzie Country, which

was being buffeted by one of its better nor’westers that made travel a bit slower than desirable. However, the lunch stop at Tekapo offered a chance to recover before they proceeded to Christchurch, where Jeanette dropped them off in reverse order. In total she had driven 2188 kilometres. Palmy travellers see the light Neil Grant The Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club’s travel adjunct made the most of some of Taranaki’s highlights for a week at the end of January and into February for their major annual excursion. Knowing that the Pukekura Park Festival of Lights finished on January 26 was the spur for an early start. This six-week event draws thousands of people into the central-city park. Brilliantly lit fountains, dragonflies and jellyfish, jewels and flowers captivate wanderers in the summer evenings. The 32 clubbies on the trip were duly fascinated by the light displays, the concert,

and the illuminated boats, reports our correspondent. The next day was a bit of a rest day after the travel and evening rambles, but on Monday, all recharged, the group set off for the Tawhiti Museum, at Hawera. Artist Nigel Ogle has created the enterprise in an old dairy factory...figures smaller than your little finger, but showing exquisite detail, through to life-sized, realistic models display the events, emotions, battles and farming progress of the region. Some are tragic, others whimsical. Oakura, 15km south-west of New Plymouth, is a tiny settlement with a lot of nuts; macadamias, that is. Sheltered from the southerlies, and with high rainfall, Oakura’s microclimate has proven suitable for specific varieties of these tasty treats.

The Palmerston North group visited the Emacadamia complex and was fascinated by the process of growing and manufacturing a wide range of macadamia and other nut products. Nearby, so also on the day’s itinerary, is Ringcraft Moana Natural Paua Pearl. These pearls are formed PHOTOS Above: Bathing beauties...Sally Astwood (left), Colleen Kersel (centre) and Gail Vercoe enjoy the Taranaki sunshine. Left: The Palmerston North Cossie travellers gather outside the bus for the team photo. Below: Left – Bus driver Paul Richardson and Jude dressed and ready for the Happy Chaddy expedition around Paritutu Rock and the Sugarloaf islands. Centre – Dorreen Davies and Marion Spearpoint. by foreign matter getting into the paua shell, and the mollusc covering it in nacre to relieve the irritation. It is said that natural pearls keep their lustre for life, while those where humans introduce the foreign body to form cultured pearls may not do so. Stoney Oaks, near Inglewood, is an interesting wildlife park, although much of the life isn’t in the least wild. Himalayan thar, yaks and wapiti probably qualify, but kunekune pigs, donkeys, baby rabbits, and goldfish are a bit tamer. Also at Inglewood is the Funho factory and museum. Anyone who grew up last century, as all these travellers did, will have played with Funho fire engines, trucks, cars and tractors in the sandpit. A visit here is a real nostalgia trip. A local identity delighting in the name of Happy Chaddy took the Palmy crew out in his boat around Paritutu Rock and to the wildlife sanctuary Sugarloaf islands. From the boat they could see the seal colonies, and ponder on the volcanic events that produced this dramatic coastline. Despite Taranaki’s reputation for rumpty weather, the group had seven gloriously fine days. Great timing, really, as many of them are octogenarians (Ces Richardson, the bus driver’s dad, is alleged to be 89) and don’t much care for dramatic weather.
