The Kingdom The ancient Kingdom of Tonga, the oldest and last remaining Polynesian monarchy, is sprinkled over 700,000 square km of ocean with a total land area of 691 square km. Divided into four main parts; the Tongatapu Group in the south (capital Nuku'alofa), the Ha'apai Group in the centre - an archipelago of low coral islands and soaring volcanoes, the Vava'u Group, with its landlocked harbour, and the isolated, volcanic Niuas in the north.

«

Getting around... REAL Tonga is the Kingdom’s national domestic carrier with a varied fleet of aircraft and daily flights between Tongatapu, Ha’apai, Vava’u and the Niuas. We also fly to ‘Eua - the shortest scheduled flight in the world at just 8 minutes!

Tonga

Water Taxis and Ferry services also provide easy inter-island transport, with taxi's and buses used by both locals and visitors to get around. For rental car hire, the Ministry of Transport in Nuku 'alofa issues visitor driver's licenses. Remember to keep to the left!

Did you know...

The island of Eua is millions of years older than the rest of the Tonga group. As a result, it offers an entirely different landscape than the other islands; rugged cliffs, caves & waterfalls, and the pristine Eua National Park.

Whale Watching

WITH ENDANGERED

ENCOUNTERS by Hannah Craig

Real Tonga

The weather was cloudy and misty with rain; just enough to keep you damp most of the day. I was excited and just a little scared. I had spent most of my life in the ocean, swimming pools, or water skiing on the river, and I held no fear of the water or what might be in it. But today the ocean was darker than normal, and the sun obscured by clouds.

As I swam, every few kicks I glanced back at the captain on the boat who signaled me by waving his arm forward. His voice kept saying "keep going, keep going" I held onto my son's hand and continued to swim forward!

t felt as though so much time had passed, but in retrospect it had only been a minute or two. Then BOOM, there they were, just below and in front of us, mom, calf, and escort! I froze, my heart raced, adrenaline filled my body. I did not know whether to scream, cry or swim backwards as fast as I could. They were all so still and quiet. I stopped breathing; my son’s eyes were so large they nearly filled his mask. He wanted to let go of my hand, but I kept squeezing tighter. I knew at that very moment my life had profoundly changed forever. This truly was a miraculous encounter, and one that left me convinced that everybody should have the opportunity to enjoy this “Miracle Beyond Imagination…” My experience had planted a seed in my mind, and little did I know at the time that Vava’u, Tonga would be the birthplace of a new life for me and my family. Thus, Endangered Encounters was born. With constantly changing weather and sea conditions during the winter months, it was important to have a motor vessel safe and comfortable for passengers wanting to enjoy their whale watching experience. After a futile local search for such a vessel, it became apparent we needed to build our own. Working closely with Roger Hill Yacht Designs in New Zealand, the blueprints for m/v Proteus evolved. After an intense five-month construction phase, she was finally launched in July 2007, and what a gem she was! With her comfortable flybridge seating to her fully enclosed cabin, equipped with convenient toilet facilities and easily accessed foredeck, passengers can enjoy many vantage points from which to observe whales in their natural habitat. For passengers wishing to swim with the whales, we have a purpose designed and built swim platform complete with long extending ladder for easy entrance and exit from the water. The spacious aft deck is equipped with comfortable seating and fresh water rinse. Her stable cat hull design and powerful outboard motors gives passengers a speedy, safe and enjoyable experience on the ocean.

ENJOY THE MOST INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFE WHILE VISITING OUR BEAUTIFUL ISLAND GROUP Climb aboard “Proteus”, fast & comfortable - she will get you there quickly, or slowly so you can spend more time enjoying your activities! Equipped with a full size bathroom, comfortable cabin and friendly staff with over 10 years experience on the waters of Vava’u to help make your adventure one to remember! Snorkel Swallows Cave, Mariners Cave, Coral Gardens and relax on white sand beaches. Experience the grace and beauty of our humpback whales and paradise untouched.

With their infectious laughter and laidback attitude, one can’t help but feel relaxed, and let the real world fade away. Tonga is rich in culture from its Polynesian history. It seems that every place here has folklore; from the great god of the ocean “Maui” who pulled Tonga out of the sea with his fishing net to the Samoan devil gods that played havoc on the ancient people, there is never a lack of an entrancing tale. Feel free to join local Kava circles and enjoy the tales and laughter!

In this ceremony, traditional gifts of puaka (pigs), kava plants and baskets of produce play an important role in the ‘Taumafa Kava’ and are laid in the centre of the ground inside the Kava circle. The Kava plant represents the land and the people, the produce and the puaka represents the abundance of the land. The ritual of the Taumafa Kava ceremony includes the ceremonial breakdown

THIS MONTH MARKS 10 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST HARVEST OF TONGA'S PREMIUM VANILLA COMPANY,

HEILALA VANILLA

H T

eilala Vanilla was established as an aid project in the wake of Cyclone Waka, which ripped through Vava’u on New Year’s Eve 2001/early hours of 2002. Further development over the next few years resulted in the first harvest of vanilla beans in 2005. Heilala Vanilla co-founder and CEO, Jennifer Boggiss, says that this 10 year milestone signals an incredible journey with the people and the Kingdom of Tonga that play a big part in the company’s success. “We fell in love with the people and the place. Vanilla was already growing on the island and we were instrumental in reinvigorating the vanilla industry in Vava’u,” says Jennifer. “We decided to create a premium vanilla brand that would benefit the local community and also put Tonga on the foodie map.”

Since arriving on supermarket shelves, Heilala Vanilla has grown into a world-class food business, winning customers with its range of organically grown, bourbon variety pure vanilla products. The company has also won praise from the food industry and chefs alike, and now exports to more than seven countries. “Heilala Vanilla is now used in some of the finest restaurants and food products around the world which will ensure many chefs and home bakers get the chance to purchase Heilala Vanilla and be able to experience a taste of Tonga” says Jennifer.

"IT IS A HIGHQUALITY PRODUCT WHICH DIRECTLY SUPPORTS TONGAN COMMUNITIES" SAYS JENNIFER

Giving you the freedom

to explore Tonga

Heilala will continue to build on the company’s successes in Tonga and has a number of new and exciting long term developments in the pipeline. Among them is working with growers to increase the size of their plantations. Heilala has also identified promising vanilla-growing land areas on some of Tonga’s more remote outer islands. “We have seen first-hand the difference supporting growers can make to communities. Our priority, remains with building the Tongan vanilla industry and supporting the communities of Tonga through various initiatives, including the Heilala Foundation” says Jennifer. Each year Heilala Vanilla contributes a percentage of sales of vanilla beans grown and exported, to the Foundation, which identifies and carries out projects in areas of education and health on the island of Vava’u. The recent explosion in foodie culture has meant there is hot demand for natural, premium food products, like Heilala Vanilla. “Consumers not only want to buy high-quality products, they also want to know where it comes from, how it was grown and how it benefits others,” says Jennifer. “Heilala is not just about selling products – it is about providing an income, a sense of pride and opportunities to small communities that may otherwise miss out.”

LION LIQUOR A five minute taxi ride from downtown Nuku’alofa you will find Lion Liquor. A destination for all of your beverage requirements. Lion Liquor is conveniently located right next door to the Waterfront Lodge and opposite the fish markets and island resort departure and arrival wharf. Here you can get all your beer, wine, spirits & non-alcoholic beverage supplies, and some frozen food products. Lion Liquor was set up in 2006 and was originally located next to The Billfish Bar and Restaurant. Growing demand moved “Lion” to Davina House in 2010, and now Lion Liquor is below the “Davina House Convention Centre”, and right next door to “Scoops Ice Cream Parlour”. Lion Liquor distributes Lion New Zealand products in Tonga, including major brands Steinlager and Maka Lager. “Maka” is a lager made by Lion New Zealand especially for Tonga. Owner John Sullivan, (who was previously General Manager of local brewery Royal Beer Co. Ltd. from 1995 to 2005), says: “We spent a lot of time and money looking at setting up a local brewery, or reviving the old one, but the numbers just didn’t stack up. So we developed “Maka”, with Lion New Zealand, to provide a quality lager to the market here in Tonga. We thought it makes more sense to brew the beer in New Zealand, because a locally brewed beer is mostly made up of imported raw materials and packaging anyway. Plus an imported beer pays 500% more excise duty than a locally produced one, and Maka sells for the same price as a local beer. Which is great for Tonga. “ Lion also represents Villa Maria Estate, New Zealand's most awarded winery, and other wineries from New Zealand, Australia, the Americas, and Europe. You can also buy frozen chicken fillets, minced beef and sausages at Lion Liquor and they are looking to grow their “deli” food items in the future. Call in and say hi to the friendly team at Lion Liquor and have a look at their great shop fit out and excellent selection.

THE LEGENDARY Billfish Bar & Restaurant has been dubbed "The Legendary Billfish" by the Air New Zealand inflight magazine and since 1995 it has been the pre-eminent bar and restaurant in Tonga.

ESTABLISHED BY LIZ SULLIVAN It has been a labour of love to create an environment where drinkers and diners can enjoy a friendly, hassle free environment whether on holiday or relaxing after work. Tongan born Liz and Kiwi husband John moved from Auckland to Tonga in 1995. Liz managed the family business of Billfish Bar & Restaurant, & Tonga Cold Store, while John was General Manager of Royal Beer Co. Ltd.

drinks, all served by the effervescent Meleane and Ane. You will soon quietly slip into the relaxed vibe of Billfish.

Liz says, "It was hard at first, especially being a woman in business in Tonga, and in a high profile business like a bar and restaurant. We established some firm rules around bar behaviour and people came to respect and appreciate the fun friendly environment that we had." Walking into the bar you are invariably greeted by the always happy staff with "Maloelelei". You can immediately feel the Billfish ambience, with the thatched ceiling and coral floor. Take in the Marlin bills on the wall or the record-breaking Sail Fish behind the bar. Have a drink with the regulars (Tongan, New Zealand, Australian, English and American expats), or just pull up to the bar or a quiet table and enjoy a Steinlager or cider on-tap. There is a selection of wine (including Villa Maria), spirits and non-alcoholic

Billfish has hosted many events over the years including the Camel Trophy Race, New Zealand to Tonga and the Round the World Yacht Races. Billfish has hosted the US, British, French, New Zealand, Australian, Indian Navies and Armies. Great supporters of local sport, the Billfish holds Tongan Sports fundraisers and dinners including National Rugby 15's (Ikale Tahi) & Sevens teams. Billfish has regular events every year including a birthday party in May, Super Rugby tipping competitions, Mr Maka, and Steinlager/All Blacks scratch card promotions during the Rugby Championship. With live sports on the televisions situated around the bar (or big screen for special events) you can watch most major sporting events, at Billfish. It is an excellent place to be to watch the Melbourne Cup! Since 2013, after some years in management at the Sky City Casino in Auckland, son, Robert has taken over day to day management of the bar. We actively involve local operators from all levels of industry participation, from large accommodation providers to community oriented initiatives and help share the benefits that tourism brings. We are very proud of Tonga's history and its relation to the pacific region and our monarchy. It has a history that is documented by our ancestors, and still living through the teachings passed down from village elders and nobles, always rich and enchanting with the interesting stories and facts. As Tonga is made up of three major island groups, there is a great diversity in history, geography, and activities. All the island groups are very accessible and have sometimes been likened to exploring three separate countries. We have some of the clearest waters and best diving locations in the world and our seas are regularly visited by whales, which is a truly majestic experience in its own right. These are just a few of the things we feel give Tonga its unique spirit and appeal. Above all the sights and natural wonders, the aspect that we are most proud of is the abundance of friendly, warm and welcoming people.

About our Business Jones travel is a division of the E.M. Jones Group, which has been in operation since 1911 and is Tonga’s oldest and largest privately owned company. Jones Travel was incorporated in 1952 to handle Air Fiji’s seaplanes (now Fiji Airways), which were the first air transports to service Tonga. We have since expanded our services to include worldwide airline reservations and ticketing, FIT and group travel, cargo and courier services, accommodation reservations, cruise shore excursion, foreign currency exchange, and ground handling for special and extraordinary flights to name a few. Jones Travel has taken the lead in trying to promote Tonga’s tourism industry by pushing new initiatives and embracing modern technology that is essential for industry success in today’s competitive world by teaming up with the WHL group, the world’s largest supplier of internet travel distribution services in the developing world, to provide online booking system: (www.tonga-travel.travel )for Tonga’s accommodation and tour providers to market them to the world. Our Goal Tonga’s tourism industry has been one of the major contributors to the economy providing much needed employment, training, opportunity and of course foreign receipts. While progress has been made within the local industry, by comparison to many of our neighbouring Pacific Islands and other destinations, we still have a long way to go. Fortunately, we have the natural resources and the potential to develop a flourishing and sustainable industry. Through tourism, we believe we all can provide Tonga and its people a brighter future! Let us help you explore our history, culture, pristine coastline, wildlife and most importantly, a place brimming with friendly, warm and welcoming people.

here is a Tongan saying, “Lea pe e Ngaue”, which loosely means to “let your work do the talking”. ‘Atunaisa Kali’s work is such. You might not recognise him in his small Popua workshop/home, with 11 others hunched over carving what you will find on stalls and outlets in Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and even in the local Tongan markets. When you do meet him, he is a man of few words but his work is sought after by fans of bone carved jewellery and other vendors who on-sell his art. “I want to share my talent with others so they too, can help their families,” says 40 year ‘Atunaisa who is affectionately called Nai by his friends and Naisa by most. “I started with tattoos and in my 20s, I married and spent 3 months learning how to carve bone from my friend ‘Ofa Lelenoa,” recalled Nai who grew up in Niutoua and was inspired by his art teacher in Liahona High School, Sami Fevale’aki. Sami moved to Hawaii and Nai began selling 250 pendants/week to Sami and others. That was in 1995. Today, he produces about 2500 pendants per week.

“The demand is huge and we cannot cater to all. That is why I believe in training others,” says Nai who explains that as long as there is bone, they can carve.

“If we have more bone, we hire more people,” says Naisa. Most of the men in his ‘workshop’ are young, unemployed men who cannot find work elsewhere. “Most ask for work so they can earn and help their families and I train them,” says Nai who has become a trainer for the Tonga Handicrafts and Cultural Tourism Support Programme funded by NZ Aid which aims to “Enhance Sustainable Livelihood Opportunities for Handicrafts and Cultural Tourism operators in Tonga.” “This gift is to be shared and I give credit to my teachers who inspired me and want to have more carvers and for them to even do better,” says Naisa. His humility is inspiring. Following a 4 day SPTO joint training in ‘Eua in June, some of the students formed an association and within a week collected $800 so they could buy a carving set to use what they had learnt.

Keleti Beach Resort offers peace and tranquility, where you are invited to stay in one of our modern fale’s which are situated to allow unparralled Ocean views, while you enjoy the warm Tongan smiles and the inviting attitudes of our local Staff. “We were excited because we could relate and Nai did not withhold any knowledge. He taught us everything he knew and more about the market,” said one of the participants. Nai says the fish hook design is still the most popular and most customers know what they want. “You can carve similar items based on our legends but people’s stories are amazing especially when they allow you to bring it to life through carvings,” says Nai. Most customers go directly to Nai. He is so busy he does not even have a stall at the local market. “I want more carvers so we can meet the demand. I would like to set up a stall at my house,” muses Naisa who admits his success was hard earned. “There are issues like people who do not pay fully but I cannot stop. I have a family and there are young men who trust that our work will earn them a living,” says Naisa with a smile. After 20 years of working quietly and producing thousands of export ready products

for others, Naisa got a break and travelled to New Zealand in March this year for Pasifika through assistance from the Ministry of Commerce and Labour. “I sold out on the first day and established some contacts. Just as I was feeling discouraged, I am reminded that this gift is not just for me and I am thankful,” says Naisa who dreams of training more carvers. “If we have more bone, we hire more people. People talk of employment for youth, here is an option,” says Naisa. Most of the men in his ‘workshop’ are young, unemployed men who cannot find work elsewhere. When told of the motivated group from ‘Eua and how he has inspired them to begin with showcasing at the upcoming Royal Agricultural Show, he smiles and says, “Their effort is impressive and their work will speak for itself.” Lea pe e Ngaue ‘Atunaisa’s story bespeaks of champion strives for excellence and community initiatives. There are other stories of artists and

handicraft producers who have kept their families from experiencing severe poverty and economic hardship. A report funded by Canada opens up the world of these producers and the significant impact that they have made and continue to contribute to the Tongan economy. RT

TECHNOLOGY AT WORK PURPOSE BUILT ALL NEW EQUIPMENT USING STATE OF THE ART BREWING TECHNOLOGY In customizing the design of our brewery we considered one factor to be the most important in the production of our beer, ‘Quality Control’. To ensure the highest quality beer production we sourced the latest technology in water filtration, beer filtration and sterilization as well as the latest advancement in bottling technology. Our bottling machine was purpose built in the United States to suit our production goals, our beer filtration and sterilization equipment is some of the most advanced used in the UK and Europe. Base water used in our brewing is filtered through a five stage filtration system that includes reverse osmosis, micron filtration, active carbon, quartz sand and ultra violet treatment which produces water of spring quality. Temperature control during the fermentation process is a critical aspect in great beer production, that’s why use dual wall, dimple jacketed, glycol circulated tanks. This allows us to monitor the fermentation process accurately and release beer at its peak of freshness and flavor.

POPAO v OUTRIGGER – TRUE TONGAN BEER CHOICES Our first brand ‘Popao’ was released into the Tongan beer market on the 24th May 2013 and became an instant success for the brewery. The flavor profile for this product was developed here in Tonga after many hours of conversation with local operators and in consultation with our internationally qualified ‘Brewmaster’. Popao was designed as a full flavored all malt beer with recognized bitterness and clean crisp finish. Unapologetic, Popao was designed to stand out from the crowd of imported beers that saturate the Tongan market.

THE SECOND WAVE The challenge was put forward to produce a second beer to prove the brewery is not a one hit wonder. We came up with ‘Outrigger’. This beer is made in the traditional lager style using select malts, hops and a premium quality lager yeast of European origin. Outrigger has an extended lagering resulting in a smooth refined flavor of hop bitterness and aroma. Outrigger has very quickly become recognized as an equal of the internationally recognized brands.

Large numbers of Humpback Whales arrive in these calm, safe waters to mate and give birth to their calves. Vava’u offers several professionally operated Whale Watch/ Swimming Tours who can put you into the water right alongside these colossal mammals. You can book a tour directly through the Resort, though due to the popularity of this unique experience, they are regularly sold out - so it’s best to book at the same time you make your reservation to avoid disappointment. Whale sightings in Vava'u are reliable since the shallow coastline that the whales frequent is accessible to boats. The Humpback Whale is among the most interesting whales to observe, owing to its impressive acrobatic displays such as fluke, flipper and head slapping, lob tailing, spy hopping, and breaching.

Sailing in and around Vava'u – Tonga Vava'u is renowned for its exceptional sailing, so explore these wonderful islands by charting a day boat. Internationally renowned sailing holiday companies “The Moorings” and “Sunsail” both have fleets of yachts and catamarans available for charter in Vava’u. For extended sailing holidays, you can sail with or without a skipper depending on your level of sailing experience. Other day sailing options are available – the Resort can arrange a day tour on your behalf.

Well known for its abundant fish stocks, there is a variety of fish waiting to be caught, including Pacific Blue, Black and Striped Marlin, Yellow Fin and Dogtooth Tuna, Mahimahi, Wahoo and Giant Trevally. The waters around Vava’u are known as one of the very best Marlin fisheries in the world. Both light tackle (8kg, 10kg) and big game gear (15kg, 24kg, 37kg) are available with the local sport fishing operators. If you are specialising in light tackle, you may wish to bring your own gear, jigs and lures. Areas fished include circumnavigation of Vava'u, North West side of Vava'u, Hunga Island and Hunga Banks where the bottom

drops from 40m to 1000m in less than a quarter of a mile. You may even see the migrating Humpback Whales at close range on your fishing charter. Tongan Beach Resort will put you into contact with any of the main operators, but again, it's best to book this before you arrive, as the skippers and boats can at times be fully booked.

Glass Bottom Boat The only glass bottom boat in Vava’u is based at Tongan Beach Resort and is available to guests and day visitors for excursions. In addition to underwater viewing, the Resort watersports team has developed a fun package which includes fishing in the shallows for reef fish. It’s a fun family activity and great for keeping children busy. The resort also runs regular snorkeling trips on the boat to Swallows Cave which is located approximately 2 kms from the resort jetty. Snorkeling in the cave is likened to swimming inside a large light bulb full of small tropical fish! These tours usually take less than 2 hours and are an ideal afternoon activity. Vava’u – The Islands with the WOW Factor By Pat McKee Vava’u is regarded as one of the best Blue Marlin fisheries in the world and as such attracts many of the best anglers from around the world wanting to try their luck. It is also one of the few destinations in the world where people can watch and even swim with Humpback Whales in their natural environment

We first came to Vava’u in 1991 on the advice of our Kiwi yachtie friend Des, who told us about this amazing place he had sailed to in the South Pacific and it was a “must see” destination by the name of Vava’u. We had never heard of this place but decided to make the trip from New Zealand anyway and after Keith spent three weeks fishing with Des from his yacht, his first reaction was “Wow, I want to come and live here and start a Sport Fishing business”. After applying for and receiving all our licenses to operate, we packed up our young family – a 1 year old daughter and 4 year old son and arrived with our vessel Kiwi Magic– no charters booked, no knowledge of the fishing grounds, little knowledge of country and culture. People thought we were crazy. Now 24 years later we are still based here 12 months of the year. The young children having completed all their schooling in Vava’u, left and are now highly educated with Canterbury University Degrees in Engineering and Commerce and successful young adults. Keith with Kiwi Magic after 24 years and 38,000 hours on the water is still as passionate as ever about his love of the sea, his love of taking “fishos” out for a day on the water and his love of seeing a whale swimmer come on board after an amazing encounter with a Humpback Whale with a first reaction of “WOW”.

Vava’u is regarded as one of the best Blue Marlin fisheries in the world and as such attracts many of the best anglers from around the world wanting to try their luck. It is also one of the few destinations in the world where people can watch and even swim with Humpback Whales in their natural environment.

Come and join Kiwi Magic with Keith and Folau our guide and let us show you the Vava’u that we know as having the “Wow” factor. Snorkel pristine crystal blue water, Sport Fish for Blue Marlin, Mahimahi, Yellowfin Tuna and swim with or watch the amazing Humpback Whales.
