MONOLOGUE Resources There are plenty of places where you can find monologues. There are monologue and auditioning books in local libraries, our school library, as well as stores like BAM, Borders, or Barnes and Noble. You can also find monologues online at sites like… www.stageagent.com/shows/monologues www.theatrehistory.com/plays/monologues www.notmyshoes.net/monologues www.stagemilk.com www.monologuegenie.com www.dailyactor.com www.monologueblogger.com

When choosing a monologue it is best to pick a monologue that is from a published play. Picking a monologue from a musical, movie, or television show is not typically encouraged. Don’t pick a monologue that requires an accent or dialect unless it is suggested in the audition requirements. Don’t pick a classical monologue (Shakespearean or Greek) unless it is required of you. If possible, know what you are auditioning for and whether it is a comedy or a drama. Pick a monologue based on that. Otherwise, pick a monologue that shows off your strengths. Pick a monologue that is appropriate for YOU (age, gender, race, etc. - know your type and play you’re type). Your monologue needs an intro and that intro should be rehearsed. “Hi. My name is _______. I am doing a monologue from _________. In this monologue, my character is talking about _________.” In your monologue you need to know WHO you are, WHAT you want, and WHAT you do to get what you want? (Character, objective/intention/goal and action/tactic)
