growing, growing & GROWING I am sitting in my home-office overlooking the marina, writing this introduction with immense pride. Not only because I am privileged to live on Ipswich’s Waterfront, but since I wrote March’s Ed’ words, we have taken giant steps forward in many areas. Our Restaurant of the Year has attracted several bids for sponsorship, with Fleximize coming out as our preferred partner and cementing our belief that our brand is one that commerce absolutely wants to be associated with. Student Life is rapidly growing in its own right, with Hughes & Fashion Candy now additional strategic partners, with more to be confirmed. Student Life is also now being co-edited by SU President Rachel Gilbey and with Rachel’s help, a steering group will take the brand in to 2017 and far beyond. Last, but not least, The Saints brand was received brilliantly last month and print & digital readers can expect this artisan and bespoke publication to continue to showcase this amazing trading area of our Town. As ever…..please continue to feed back to us on all topics and my very best wishes...

OUR PORT WRITTEN BY STEVEN JOHNSON
Associated British Ports (ABP) is the UK’s leading ports operator with 21 ports and boasts the UK’s leading export port for agricultural products at Ipswich. In the second of our regular guest writing spots, ABP’s East Coast Divisional Port Manager – Paul Ager explains the details behind the CCTV installation at the Old Custom House. ABP has invested £12,000 on new Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) equipment at the historic Old Custom House - the location of the Port of Ipswich Office and the main office for the broader Short Sea Ports division. The new state-of-the-art equipment will allow ABP to have 24 hour coverage all around Old Custom House, which is located in the heart of the historic Waterfront area of Ipswich. Our port operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week - so this significant investment has been made to keep not
only our employees safe, but also the local residents and the wider community using this area of Ipswich. ABP is continually working with the local police and ‘Ipswich Central’ in light of instances of anti-social behaviour in the area. Having made the decision in January to commence installation, and with the project completed in February, we have already seen a reduction in the amount of reported issues. In addition to this investment in security and our neighbours’ safety, ABP has also recently installed CCTV in & around our Marina, on the Island Site. This has cost in the region of £30,000 and the money has been carefully spent on providing 20 state-of-the-art HD cameras, providing 24/7, panoramic coverage. Ipswich Haven Marina has been open since May 2000 and was officially opened at a ceremony in July 2000 by Sir Robin KnoxJohnston when he predicted that “Ipswich Haven Marina will fast become the star attraction on the east coast”. Facilities for marina customers, include high quality toilets and showers which are situated in three locations in and around the Marina. The Marina office building also houses a berth holders’ launderette.

BEHIND THE SCENES
THE VIEW FROM THE
SALTHOUSE HARBOUR HOTEL
Pinot Grigio, Prosecco & Palates WRITTEN BY RICHARD STEWART Diogo Abreu has been General Manager of the Salthouse Harbour Hotel for nearly 5 years and leads the team that has established the hotel as one of the finest luxury hotels in the East of England. Here, our editor Richard Stewart quizzes the charming boss on what some would see as a brave move…. why 2 staple wine favourites are nowhere to be found on the Hotel’s wine list?: Soave and Cremant – these are the wines that have had the audacity to replace Pinot Grigio & Prosecco on the Salthouse’s wine list, despite the best laid plans of those producers’ marketing departments and it’s all about “passion”, “effort”, “education” & “not following the crowd”. “We want to offer the best quality-to-value ratio that is possible” explains Diogo. “We are passionate about wine and a huge amount of time and effort goes in to trying to help educate and impress our guests”. Sitting in the Hotel’s Eaterie restaurant and chatting to Diogo, it is obvious that the story behind the wine is key. “I want my entire team to know & understand the message. We can offer something better and whether it’s from visiting vineyards or by regularly
tasting our suppliers’ recommendations, we can challenge ourselves to understand the journey” continues Diogo. The challenge seems to be paying off. Diogo enthusiastically boasts that “9 out of 10” guests are converts having had to peruse perhaps a more unfamiliar wine list, digest advice from a knowledgeable server and then set the tastebuds to work. “There are so many grape varieties out there that don’t necessarily result in a bottle that is more expensive than you are used to. Couple this with refusing to have a ‘that’ll do’ attitude and you can see that it’s not about us being stubborn!” jokes Diogo. Is the familiarity with our wine a British ‘thing’? I ask Diogo. “Possibly” is the immediate and obviously nonconfrontational answer! “In Italy – especially in the north – Pinot Grigio & Prosecco are not readily available”. This is a comment that I readily nod along to, as this has been my experience on my travels. Although Diogo admits that he can talk about wine all day, the morning is running away with us, so there is only time for one more observation. “People shouldn’t judge a grape on an experience”. I look for more information….. “A certain bottle may not have delivered in the past, but that doesn’t mean that the variety should be dismissed in the future”. Wise words to finish.

WHERE ARE WE GOING? and why? WRITTEN BY POPPY BROWN
Nowadays, us humans love nothing more than discovering a new culture, language or environment. So where are we going and why? THE PARTY HOLIDAY The classic 18-30 party holiday is one that will remain within the travel world. People want the opportunity to get away from their studies or work and have a great time with friends in the sun. The Greek Islands and Balearics will always be popular for this type of holiday. It’s easy and affordable and you know the party scene will not be a disappointment. However people are venturing further and looking for more when it comes to booking
a holiday. The idea of going somewhere ‘different’ and doing something ‘different’ on your holiday is the experience students are chasing. For example; festivals including Hideout in Croatia and Oktoberfest in Munich, provide that extra sense of uniqueness and help create that WOW memory.
THE GAP YEAR/S When we think of travelling we think of money. We think about how can we afford to travel without having to work for the next 3 years to save up enough money to do it. This is no longer the case. We don’t need to spend a lot of money to go travelling; travelling is accessible to all, even students! The idea of the ‘gap year’ has always been around and is definitely more popular now than ever. Students are graduating from university, are leaving college or school and are curious to explore the world. We are combining travelling with work or education. Popular destinations include Australia, USA, New Zealand and Canada. Speaking from experience, working in such destinations provides you with the opportunity to immerse yourself within the culture and ‘live like a local’. Additionally it gives you the opportunity to earn money and explore, whether it is whilst you are living within that country, or after your work experience. For example, lots of people either travel on their way to their Australian destination, or on their way home. They
16 • APRIL 2017 • WAT ER F RO N T L I FE
visit other destinations including Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Bali and Hong Kong. A great way to do this is with a tour and there are numerous young travel companies (G Adventures, Contiki, Gecko) which offer the opportunity to visit particular places you may not have even heard of, as most tours are led by locals who know the destinations inside out. That way you won’t miss anything! On the other hand people are saving to do that bigger ‘once in a lifetime trip’. South America has become very popular with the student population. They want to trek the Inca Trail, mingle with the Amazon locals on their jungle homestay and party at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival.
CITY BREAKS For those who don’t wish to travel so far and need that weekend away from the stress of studying, we recommend a European city break. They are easy to travel to, cost effective and interesting. Destinations such as Barcelona, Krakow, Reykjavik and Marrakech, are some of the popular city breaks students are exploring and we highly recommend these here at TravelQuest.
TO SUMMARISE All these opportunities are affordable and adventurous; something students are looking for in order to escape the ‘everyday life’ and their ‘predictable routine’. The chance to ‘step out of reality’ and get this new exciting perspective on life, before
venturing out into the world of full time work. People are looking to find the Earth’s secret wonders. We aspire to collect these incredible experiences, create memories and become storytellers. Remember the quality of an experience isn’t attached to a price tag.
Poppy is one of a very knowledgeable team of advisors and can be reached on FREEPHONE 0800 021 3237 or on Ipswich (01473) 357018. TravelQuest is situated at 27-29 St. Nicholas Street, Ipswich IP1 1TW and can be reached via email at studentlife@travelquest.co.uk

Where’s your
HEAD AT? WRITTEN BY TONI NEWLAND
Toni Newland is a full-time, second year student, studying Criminology and Youth Studies. Toni is also President of the newly formed Where’s Your Head At? Society at University of Suffolk. Toni wanted to collaborate with Student Life, to help increase awareness of wellbeing & mental health issues. Where’s Your Head At? (WYHA?) is a student-led society, focusing on mental health and wellbeing promotion at University of Suffolk. I came up with the idea back in August last year while supporting my own mental health campaign, which aimed to improve support & facilities for mental health at the University. I was inspired to engage in this after losing a close friend through poor mental health, who attended a larger university elsewhere. This episode in my life triggered a realisation that, as such a small university, we should still be able to provide more comprehensive 1-to-1 support for students experiencing mental health issues. This is effectively how our society was formed! We aim to provide events and socials not
only to raise awareness, but to help bring passionate and like-minded people together to reach our ultimate goal; reducing the stress of having mental health issues while studying and the stigma surrounding it. Working alongside student services, the idea of running a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course was formed and then implemented via a University staff member being trained to deliver the course. MHFA is similar to a normal first aid course. However, instead of aiding physical symptoms of injury, it focuses on mental health. The course educates individuals in how to identify, understand and then help a person who may be developing a mental health issue. MHFA teaches you how to recognise common but crucial signs and symptoms of early onset issues and how to provide effective help on a first aid basis. This includes guiding someone towards the right support. From my point of view MHFA is essential in today’s society and just as important as any normal first aid! As a Students’ Union based society, we are pushing for staff at the University (and our Students’ Union) to be trained in MHFA, in order to support current and future students.

Working together to help make Suffolk an emotionally healthy County! WRITTEN BY CAROLE THAIN It really is encouraging to hear of organisations that are ‘getting it right’ in terms of looking after their most valuable asset, their people. Providing 1-2-1 support and organisationwide training is of great importance in both helping to reduce stigma and promote a culture where people feel more able to speak openly about problems. Mental Health First Aid is a valued course that helps provide skills and knowledge. Having attended the course a few years ago, I certainly felt it useful in gaining a wider understanding of the different types of problems. Education and raising awareness is a priority for Suffolk Mind. We all have mental health, just as we have physical health, and we need to look after both. Our physical needs are easier to identify, our body tells us when we feel hungry, thirsty
Suffolk Mind and tired. It is harder to tell when our emotional needs are not being met. Throughout Suffolk we work with people of all ages and businesses and organisations across all sectors, delivering training and providing information to help people have a better understanding of their emotional needs. The more we learn about these, the easier it is to tell when they need to be met and what to do about it. Our training centres around a “needs met” model which outlines both the emotional needs that we all have, and the innate resources we’re all born with that help us get those needs met in healthy ways. Meeting our needs helps us to stay mentally well. The training also looks at those barriers which may prevent us from getting our needs met; the environment we live or work in, or the damage or misuse of our own internal resources. As individuals, we can all commit to taking care of our own mental wellbeing, and we would encourage people to join our Friends of Suffolk Mind network which can offer support to help do this. One of the benefits of joining our growing network is an invitation to join one of our ‘needs met’ training sessions delivered by our experienced mental health team.
The network is free to join with much to gain, so consider taking that first step towards making a difference in your life, and the lives of those you care about. For more information visit our website Friends of Suffolk Mind www.suffolkmind.org.uk/friends

Student Life
TECH EXPERT
WRITTEN BY ASHLEY SHOREY-MILLS
Student Life is proud to announce its latest partnership. Looking after everything ‘TECH’ for us from here on in, will be Hughes. Staff at Hughes know a thing or two about advising and helping customers, as the brand has been providing expert advice and service for nearly 100 years and strives to create a warm and welcoming environment in all of its stores. In the hot seat for April is Southern Area & SmartHome Manager, Ashley Shorey-Mills. The world of technology and more importantly home technology, is a wonderful place. We have come such a long way in such a short period of time. Whether it is watching content from hundreds of countries across the world from the comfort of your living room,
telling your coffee machine to make you a Latte whilst you are still in bed, or simply being able to video call a relative on the other side of the world, technology has changed our lives as we know it. However, we also know, as wonderful as it is, it can be confusing knowing what technology to choose. This is where we come in…. We are the largest independent electrical retailer in East Anglia and possibly the UK. We have been on your high streets for 96 years and currently have over 40 locations in which to look after you. Our aim is to advise you on the world of technology. It could be the humble washing machine, the big smart TV, or even the latest innovation in ironing; we are here to help and assist you to make sure you rent or buy the correct item, first time. As a company, we are quite unique compared to the other retailers out there for you to choose from (both in shops and on line). We not only sell electrical goods, we also rent them. Not only this,
22 • APRIL 2017 • WAT ER F RO N T L I FE
but we have a full installation and service infrastructure to ensure that you are not left without support, after you have taken delivery of your goods from us. We also have a business to business division, designed to help traders with their projects and even a smart home division that is a specialist in the rapidly growing world of “the connected home”. This part of the electrical world we are now entering into is the most exciting, but also possibly a most nervy time for purchasers. For years we have survived with the same old lighting and heating systems. We have been happy watching TV in one room without the need to stop it and then watch it, seamlessly, in another. However, the development of what is possible, not only for gadget fans, but also for ‘normal people’, has been dramatic. Why should you come home from work to a freezing cold house? Why can’t you turn the heating on, before you get home late after the train was delayed? Why can’t the oven already be pre-heating? Why can’t your favourite music switch on automatically, the moment you walk in the front door? Why do you have to survive with poor Wifi in some rooms of the house, whilst the living room is perfect? From the most every day scenarios, to an idealistic type of living……… we have a solution that we can suit perfectly to your lifestyle. Over the coming months of ‘Student Life’, I will be here to talk about the developments in technology, the new and exciting products that are available, but also the common issues people face when purchasing everyday items. Our aim is always to give the right advice and so hopefully, the information that I can share each month will help you when making decisions on what to rent or purchase. I will also be looking to carry out Q&A’s via social media and of course, we are always happy to see anyone at our stores in the town centre, Felixstowe Road, or Martlesham Heath. 2 3 • APRIL 2017 • WAT ERF RO N T L I FE

John Manning is owner of ‘The House In Town’ and opened his destination shop in 2011, as an addition to his mother’s shop Maud’s Attic and his brother’s venue Merchant House Interiors. All three shops can be found in the charming St. Peter’s Street, occupying numbers 23 to 29. John has a background in property development & interior design, which has led to retailing home interiors and accessories. Here at The House In Town, we believe that the sitting room is one of the most important rooms in the house. It is arguably the room which says the most about you and is also the room most seen by friends and family. Beyond the usual furniture pieces (of which we have lots), finishing touches can really be applied; with the use of mirrors, artwork, clocks and decorative pieces. This is the best & most cost-effective way of really giving your home the ‘wow’ factor. A mirror will bounce natural light and a statement frame can make a room on its own. I like to see one in every sitting room, either on a chimney breast or above

a sofa. Large round mirrors can be especially stylish and effective. The one featured here is 118cm in diameter and has a silver/gold finish. With over 1,000 different mirrors to choose from, we’ll always find the right piece for you. For me, a clock is an essential piece in any lounge. As well as the functional aspect, it’s a great way of adding some colour and with so many sizes available, a clock can be the answer for smaller areas of exposed wall, which are sometimes more difficult to fill. Our sister shop, Merchant House Interiors, is also a real clock specialist. Located only 2 doors away, you can look at a large selection. Whilst artwork is very much down to personal taste, it is an expression of your personality and allows you to be as bold as you like (or subtle for that matter). Personally, I like to see one statement piece, rather than a collection of smaller, weaker pieces. The latest range in my shop uses hand embellished liquid glass and crystals to give a very tactile finish. This really has to be seen for yourself, to be really appreciated. To complement the large range of artwork, we also have a huge range of cushions to match. The final piece which will really showcase your home of an evening, or dark winter’s day, is lighting. The feature chandelier shown is a real stunner, but not everyone will have the room or necessary ceiling height to accommodate it. LED lighting is a very modern twist on some classic designs and has the added advantage of more efficient running costs - as there aren’t any bulbs to replace. A lot of our chandeliers have matching table and floor lamps to complement them, but they also look fantastic on their own.
In the last few months we’ve been working hard on our new website which will launch very soon (www.houseintown.co.uk). As independent retailers, we much prefer that you come and browse our 3 family shops, but the website gives you a taste of the thousands of pieces that we offer. Saints ART
Subterranean Arts is an arts development organisation, with a contemporary gallery and counter culture book emporium, in the heart of The Saints.
Since 2013, we have established ourselves as active innovators and supporters of the arts in Ipswich and its surrounding areas. We work with professional artists, alongside marginalised individuals and communities, to exhibit and explore artistic expression. Alongside our St. Peter’s Street Gallery, we also curate exhibitions at Ipswich Town Hall, in conjunction with the Borough Council and within Gainsborough Community Library. Gainsborough, with its streets named after famous artists, has become a natural space for us over the past few years, in which to engage the community in exploration of art through projects. We have established a regular summer arts project for young people and due to demand, we are now hosting adult art classes. Alongside visual arts, we host the biannual “Festival of the Beats”, which is an alternative arts and literature festival, celebrating beatnik and counter cultures since the 1950’s. We have been supported in this by The University of Suffolk, Kerseys Solicitors, Ipswich Film Theatre and other local businesses.
WRITTEN BY PAUL & ALISON
Moving into our current location from the Atrium Studios at UCS in 2014, has helped us expand, gain more independence, integrate with the Waterfront community and offer unique opportunities to the people we work with. Many of who may not have previously visited The Saints and its eclectic mix of established boutiques and bistros. Our newest venture is our Sub Arts programme on Ipswich Community Radio, every Saturday afternoon. Our programme’s unique & off the wall approach to the arts scene, mixed with counter culture, music, literature and spoken word, has renewed a demand for our “Vagabonds Lounges”; a platform for a variety of experimental performances. These lounges were originally a bi-product of the “Festival of the Beats”, but have not been as frequent since we have had reduced access to venues. As a charity, our long-term goal is to establish a counter culture museum and gallery and we are keen to hear from anyone who would like get involved or support us in any way. www.subterraneanarts.com

The prospect of warmer and settled weather certainly encourages people to go shopping and to explore our great variety of restaurants and cafés. For some businesses, it’s also a chance to open up the garden; you check these out at K Bar, At Twenty5, and Applaud Coffee. It could be the first chance for some alfresco dining. These little gardens are some of our best kept secrets on the Saints.

SAINTS TRADERS
Cathy Frost is the owner of Love One in St Peter’s Street, one of Ipswich’s most unique gift shops. Cathy is also the Coordinator of The Saints Traders Group
For many businesses, Easter is a welcome start to the Spring/Summer season. It is the first bank holiday of the year, there is the hope of better weather and it’s a chance to get together with family and friends. For the Saints’ traders especially, it usually signals an increase in footfall and the return of our many out-of-town visitors.
Many retailers experience some seasonal variation in the product ranges that they offer at Easter, as many customers will be turning their minds to Spring cleaning and the chance of getting into the garden. The Saints can offer lots of inspiration both for the indoors and outdoors. Maud’s Attic and Merchant House Interiors will be getting their garden furniture display ready to open at the end of April. The House in Town and Loveone have lots of gift ideas for any Easter presents you may be looking for. All of our boutiques are now stocked with fashions that are looking forward to sunnier and longer days. For a splash of spring colour head to Marianna, Cake and Catwalk and the Italian Shirt Shop. An Easter favourite in Loveone is the much loved Jellycat bunny. One of Cake and Catwalk’s best sellers this time of year is the rabbit handbag charm, popular with all ages. With the anticipation of the new season ahead are you thinking of the first BBQ’s? If you are tempted and want advice on seasonal meat for the BBQ or the Easter Sunday table, make a visit to our local butcher at Rose House Butchery and meet our very knowledgeable butcher Jamie. So, if you are looking to shake off the Winter, take a trip down the Saints for lots of seasonal inspiration.

escalation of the feelings which may lead to stress. If you feel overwhelmed when faced with a list of jobs, a simple thing like tackling one task at a time, if you can, and alternating dull tasks with an interesting one can make all the difference!
Children (and school staff) look forward to time off. For some of us it means a longer weekend with the two extra bank holidays. And for many our mood can lift with lengthening days and the extra sunlight… chocolate springs to mind too!
It can also be helpful to think of something you have done that you feel proud of; reminding yourself of what you have achieved can be a real boost. It can also, of course, be useful to share problems with someone else if you feel able to.
Easter can also have its drawbacks as parents juggle time off to cover childcare, there may be added pressure on the finances with those extra days out or a trip away. Even the extra cost and pressure of entertaining friends and family may create a feeling of stress or anxiety. Being stretched and stressed though are not the same. Sometimes you hear people saying that a little stress keeps people on their toes – particularly when referring to a workforce, perhaps. The only reward you get for dealing with stress is that it goes away. Stretch, however, is different. Being stretched, learning new skills or discovering new information, is important for getting our need for achievement met. Learning to recognise the difference and being able to manage our thoughts and feelings when being stretched, can help us cope with difficult situations or a time of extra busyness enabling us to maintain a balance with our wellbeing prevent an 38and • APRIL 2017
Not forgetting the chocolate… with hot cross buns and Easter eggs everywhere at the moment it is also important to remember the impact of what we eat and drink and how this affects our emotional wellbeing. Eating the right foods with the right nutrition is good for both our physical and emotional health, but we often resort to unhealthy options to lift our mood when we feel lonely, stressed, bored or anxious. During April, we are going to be exploring the relationship between food, drink and emotional wellbeing at Quay Place and will be holding a free information session on Thursday 27th April at 6.00pm. The Ipswich waterfront area has a new Heritage and Wellbeing Centre, Quay Place – the result of a partnership between Suffolk Mind and The Churches Conservation Trust. Quay Place is open to the public offering a café, room hire and a range of different heritage and wellbeing activities. Our vision for Quay Place is for people to meet here, perhaps discover something they didn’t know – either about themselves or about the story of the church and the Ipswich waterfront – and maybe connect with something old or new.
QUAY PLACE
We all have an emotional need for community and feeling part of something bigger than ourselves. At Quay Place we have used the heritage of the building, the surrounding area and the people that pepper the history of the church, to come up with various ways to meet the emotional needs that we all have. We hope you will visit to find out what’s going on, take part in the activities, and learn more about emotional needs and the link between heritage and wellbeing. www.quayplace.co.uk

Asbestos Disease is still
CLAIMING LIVES WRITTEN BY PHOEBE OSBORNE Currently 4,500 people in the UK die each year from asbestos related diseases, half of which die from mesothelioma, a fatal form of lung cancer caused by inhalation of asbestos dust. Other asbestos diseases include asbestos related lung cancer, pleural thickening and asbestosis which can also lead to death. Most people who have been exposed to asbestos never suffer any illness, but those who do develop symptoms 20, 30 or 40 years later, are diagnosed during retirement or whilst working to care for families. It is no longer only construction workers, plumbers and carpenters who are being diagnosed, in the last decade an increasing number of their spouses, along with teachers, former pupils, and nurses have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, showing you do not need to work directly with asbestos to be at future risk. When someone is diagnosed with an asbestos disease they should contact a solicitor to seek advice about bringing a
legal claim against their former employer. We regularly obtain payments using the specialist procedure set up by the Royal Courts of Justice and recently secured a settlement of £277,000 for a gentleman diagnosed with mesothelioma. Sadly some victims are only diagnosed with mesothelioma at inquest, but it is not uncommon to settle a claim after death, based on witness evidence and investigation work. Phoebe is a Solicitor specialising in asbestos related disease claims. She is recognised by the Association of Personal Injury Solicitors (APIL) as an accredited Litigator. MYSTERY SHOP REPORT
“Everything you need to get to a
HEALTHIER PLACE” VENUE ANYTIME FITNESS, REGATTA QUAY TIMING WEEKDAY MORNING
Anytime Fitness gym on the Waterfront boasts that it has ‘everything you need to get to a healthier place’. With a number of local gyms vying for our business, our mystery shopper – Andy – was sent along to get the low-down on the tone-up. FIRST IMPRESSIONS The gym is located in a welcoming redbrick building overlooking the water. Signage is clear and the external areas are all clean & tidy. The stroll along the marina to get from my apartment to the venue was very pleasant, as was the fact that I didn’t need to worry about parking. SCORE 5/5 AMBIENCE & GREETING The entrance is controlled by key-fob entry, so there is a bell for visitors. Within 20 seconds of pressing the button, I was warmly greeted by a young lady called Ivika and invited inside. SCORE 4.5/5 SERVICE I enquired about membership and was immediately invited in to a small office
just inside the entrance, where a few of my personal details were requested. This was to be expected and not onerous. These were written on to a professional looking enquiry form and I was then offered a tour of the facilities. SCORE 5/5 ATMOSPHERE Having been a member of various gyms in the past and discussing alternative venues with friends on a fairly regular basis, I am well aware of the different atmospheres that can be found in gyms. Anything from peace & quiet in a smaller gym, to testosterone fuelled grunting in a predominantly male, free weight using location - can quickly determine a decision on whether to become a member, stay a member or even ever return! There were only a few people at Anytime Fitness on my visit, but it was evident to me that the gym would have the right atmospheric mix even when busier. This thought was enhanced by Ivika telling me that there was a membership ‘cap’, so as to ensure the best experience for all. SCORE 5/5
4 2 • APRIL 2017 • WAT ERF RO N T L I FE
TOUR Ivika showed me around the extensive ground floor facilities, which included free weights & cross-trainers. There is also a good sized-studio for staging various classes and I was interested to learn that the spin classes are held virtually, with bikes set out and then a screen deployed, with a virtual trainer putting you through your paces. Upstairs, was equally impressive, with 2 state of the art Wattbike trainers and a cool down/ stretch area. SCORE 5/5 ENTICEMENTS At the time of my visit (late March), there was a £3 discount on membership fees for Waterfront residents and the offer of a 1-day free trial pass at the gym. There was also an offer of a free ‘goody bag’ and Ivika explained that offers tend to change monthly. I was intrigued that there wasn’t an attempt to try to ‘close’ me on becoming a member there and then. SCORE 4/5
STANDARDS Ivika was knowledgeable, friendly, professional & courteous and the venue was spotlessly clean & tidy. All of the equipment seemed in excellent working order and no machinery was unavailable/ out of order. SCORE 5/5
I would certainly consider membership of Anytime Fitness, due to its location (to my home/ the Waterfront) and the ease of not having to park my car. I love the idea of being able to use the facilities 24/7 with a key fob and being able to use other AF gyms around the country. Although the gym was quiet on my visit, I think that even when busy, the venue would be a pleasant place to work out…..if those words even belong together!?

INTRODUCING…
SUFFOLK RECORD OFFICE and THE HOLD WRITTEN BY AMY RUSHTON
Amy Rushton, Project Coordinator for ‘The Hold’, introduces the treasure-trove that is Suffolk Record Office and explains the project. At Suffolk Record Office, we believe that understanding our history can help us understand ourselves and work together for a better future. That’s why we provide access to 900 years of historical archives of both personal and national significance, helping people trace their family histories, research the area
where they live, or simply uncover exciting stories about our wonderful county. The collections live on 9 miles of shelving at our three branches; Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft, and Ipswich – the biggest branch by far. They contain thousands of nationally and internationally significant items, as well as some real surprises. For example, did you know we hold a copy of the first work of literature in England to ever be censored on the grounds of….obscenity? Moving to safer territory (!), our medieval records are second to none, and are studied by scholars from all over the world. Among these records are manorial documents national treasures that provide an insight into daily life during medieval times, such as the fact that a porpoise was a delicacy in the 1300s, something that has always intrigued me (where did Suffolk get its porpoises?)! You’ll find our Ipswich branch in the former Victorian School building on Gatacre Road; however, we’re in the middle of creating an exciting new facility, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. ‘The Hold’ will be a purpose-built heritage centre beside Ipswich’s unique and transformed Waterfront. The vision of the project is to bring the archives alive to many more people, including children

and young people. Suffolk County Council is working in partnership with the University of Suffolk to make this vision a reality; ‘The Hold’ will contain an auditorium, teaching spaces, fit-for-purpose public research facilities, state of the art storage for the archives themselves, as well as retail, an exhibition space and a café. It will host a regular programme of exhibitions, events and activities to tempt everyone to come and discover something new – whether you’re a history fan, a student, a parent looking for activities for the kids, or just curious there will be something on offer to tempt you!
View of St Peter’s Dock—IRO/QSIPS/9
‘The Hold’ should open its doors in late 2019, in time for the 900th anniversary of the oldest treasure in the collection! Each month in Waterfront Life we’ll update you on the progress of this project, as well as showcasing some of the unique treasures from the archives. Before too long, we’ll be able to share some architectural drawings with you, so please watch this space!

Welcome to the
NEIGHBOURHOOD WRITTEN BY ADAM PESCOD If the name Fleximize rings a bell, it might be because you’ve seen the company’s adverts on various roundabouts across Ipswich. However, since June 2016, regular users of Landseer Road will have undoubtedly spotted Fleximize’s HQ on the corner of the Duke Street roundabout. The company, which launched in January 2014, was previously based in Masterlord Office Village at Ransomes Industrial Estate. Following a recruitment drive last summer, it made the move to larger premises on John Street. WHO ARE FLEXIMIZE? Founded by local entrepreneur Peter Tuvey and former banker Max Chmyshuk, Fleximize is an alternative finance company that provides business loans to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that have been trading for at least six months. To date, the company has lent over £40 million to businesses across the UK and is looking to
accelerate its lending this year. Fleximize’s loans can be used for any purpose; including cash flow, expansion or purchasing new machinery. As well as offering financial support to businesses, Fleximize also provides free advice through its Knowledge Hub, where business owners can find articles on a range of topics, including HR, marketing, web development and basic accounting. Tuvey and Chmyshuk decided to launch Fleximize after the major high-street banks reduced their lending to SMEs following the recession. They believed that there was space for a business lender that could help companies in need of funding, while not applying the strict lending criteria of banks. Rather than letting a computer make the majority of its lending decisions, Fleximize has a team of expert underwriters who take a close look at every application, with a view to saying ‘yes’ where possible. Companies can apply for a loan through Fleximize’s website and if all documentation is received in good time, the company can give businesses a decision within 24 hours and deposit funds soon after, if approved. Fleximize continues to seek out opportunities to support more businesses and would love to hear from any business in need of funding. So, if you’re looking for financial support or business advice, simply visit Fleximize online or call 01473 208 108.

READ ALL about it UPPER ORWELL CROSSINGS PROJECT Following a competition run in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Suffolk County Council (SCC) has announced that Foster + Partners has been selected as the architectural team to join the Upper Orwell Crossings project. The crossings will be the second project Foster + Partners has undertaken in the Town, following the construction of the architecturally significant Willis Building.
The Panel selected Foster + Partners from a strong shortlist of five internationally renowned teams. Foster + Partners impressed the panel by the quality of their overall approach and thinking, including the initial design concepts presented for the Project’s three crossings. The approaches were considered to have the potential to enhance Ipswich’s thriving Waterfront, as well as acting as a catalyst for regeneration of the wider harbour area. SCC along with key partners, including Ipswich Borough Council and Ipswich Vision, keenly anticipate seeing the initial design ideas developed further with the wider project team and in consultation with local businesses, communities and residents. “The project also offers the opportunity to consider the design of the bridges in a wider urban context, creating new promenades and public spaces between the riverfront, inner harbour and island”

WATERFRONT Counsel
A Resident
COUNCILLOR WRITTEN BY LIZ HARSANT
Liz Harsant was elected Councillor in 2002 to represent Holywells Ward and in 2004 became Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, in a joint administration (Conservatives /Lib Dems) for 6½ years. Amongst other things, community spirit is one of the reasons that Liz writes for Waterfront Life. One of the most rewarding parts of being a Councillor is meeting, getting to know and helping the people you were elected to represent. When I first became a Councillor, I started a Residents Meeting in a local coffee shop. It was great and the residents seemed happy that I was interested in their concerns. One of the most taxing times was when the Duke Street roundabout was removed and access to parts of the Waterfront became very difficult. We held large meetings in the University with the Cabinet member for Roads & Transport from Suffolk County Council in attendance. Believe me this was not a happy meeting. For me this was probably one of the worst sides of being a Councillor and almost unsolvable. I still have residents talking about it. Our monthly meetings have continued and the issues raised are usually about roads,
transport and anti-social behaviour. I am able to report back to the police with residents’ concerns by email or at our local Neighbourhood Police meetings. Officers from both the Borough and County are happy to attend when there are big issues affecting the area, as does our MP Ben Gummer. I also meet with residents in Back Hamlet who also have some really difficult issues. A large part of my Ward is the Rivers Estate and I use the Stable Block Café in Holywells Park as a venue to meet these residents. All in all being a Councillor is very rewarding; sometimes very upsetting when you are involved with the personal circumstances of some residents with very difficult and emotional issues, but when you can help there is a feeling of great achievement. Most residents know I have moved from Salisbury Road where I lived for 40 years, but after my husband died and then my beloved dog, I had to make that decision. I love my Ward and am very involved in many of the Clubs and events that go on. I am always happy to help just ring (01473 232830 / 07789 684153) or email (cllrharsant@btconnect.com) me.

Ipswich
MARITIME TRUST WRITTEN BY DES PAWSON MBE Ipswich Maritime Trust (IMT) was formed in 1982 by the nucleus of the Maritime Ipswich committee. IMT is a registered charity, whose aims are the promotion of the maritime history of Ipswich & Suffolk and to encourage sailing for (primarily) young people. Membership is a modest £5 (£7.50 for joint membership) and you can download an application form from the website www.ipswichmaritimetrust.org.uk or call 01473 353512 The modern extension of the Salthouse Harbour Hotel stands on the site of what was once J O Whitmore’s sail loft. The Whitmore family were barge owners and sailors from Harwich. Towards the very end of the 19th century, John Offer Whitmore took over the Neptune Quay premises, which belonged to Bayley & Sons; Shipbuilders and Chandlers. The ground floor was a ships chandlery, with the upper floor the sail loft. Sometime in the 1930’s an extra storey was added and the Drift at the side was covered. Metal work was first built up over the Drift and then extended over the main building, to rest on the wall of the adjacent building; meanwhile keeping the loft going. However, when the join was to be made there was a problem with the height between floors and the floor had to be raised. The evidence for this change of height was visible on the stairs inside the building, up to the end of the building.
J O Whitmore were especially well known for their barge sails, but also did a lot of government work such as making tents and large tarpaulin covers and they would willingly tackle any heavy canvas work. The Chandlery on the ground floor supplied the needs of the working port. The business was in the Whitmore family right through the 20th century until the business closed in 1984. Then, for a brief while, Ipswich Boat Building Partnership used the building, with Austin Farrar making modern sails. Later the building was used as a snooker hall with a bar below, before being demolished and rebuilt in the form that is seen today. Image credit to Ipswich Maritime Trust Photo Archive.
