A Proud Return

Come Out With Pride’s rescheduled event is ready for Nov. 13 Steve Blanchard

o

rlando | Come Out With Pride Redux, COWP2 or just Come Out With Pride. Whatever you call it, Pride is back in Orlando on Sunday, Nov. 13, with a street festival, parade and entertainment around Lake Eola. The 2011 festival was rescheduled after its original October date was rained out. Strong winds, lightning and on-again-off-again heavy rains proved to be just too dangerous to carry on with plans. But thanks to quick thinking by COWP’s organizers, the event was quickly back on track and should go off without a hitch Nov. 13, with a few noticeable differences. “The major difference is that it will get darker much sooner,” says COWP Executive Director Mikael Audebert, referring to the recent “falling back” of daylight savings time. “It will start getting dark by the time the parade ends, which will create a party atmosphere by the stage.” Fireworks will also start earlier than planned—at 7:30 p.m.—since it will be plenty dark by then. Once again, Jonathan D. Lovitz of LOGO’s Set Up Squad is on hand as grand marshal and emcee at the main stage. In this special section of Watermark, we’ve

compiled the weekend’s list of Pride events, attractions and entertainment surrounding Central Florida’s largest Pride celebration to help you navigate your way to a proud and successful weekend. Typically, COWP coincides with the weekend of Oct. 11, or National Coming Out Day. Mother Nature had other plans, however. COWP chose the Nov. 13 date specifically because of its availability, according to organizers. “This was the first date that Lake Eola Park was available for us,” read a statement released by COWP last month. “We would like to thank the City of Orlando, and especially the Parks Department and OPD for being so supportive.” And that support has also been felt within the LGBT community. Clubs, bars and organizations have held fundraising events over the last month to help COWP recoup most of its money on the soggy, cancelled October event. But for this weekend, it looks like sunny skies for COWP 2011—literally. According to the Weather Channel, Orlando is forecast to see partly cloudy skies and an accompanying high temperature of 75 degrees and a low near 60.
