THROB’S CONSPICUOUS ABSENCE

HERE WAS THROB, SARASOTA’S SO-CALLED “ONLY GAYOWNED GAY-OPERATED NIGHTCLUB,” at the city’s annual Pride festival on Saturday, Oct. 20? The club was conspicuous by its absence when it should have been a centerpiece of the event. Perhaps it’s time for us locals to demonstrate disdain for this type of slap-in-the-face by taking our entertainment dollars north over the bridge to Tampa/St. Pete and south to Venice/Port Charlotte.

STEREOTYPE OVER DIGNITY?

R

EGARDING THE 19.21 EDITION OF WATERMARK, I WAS STRUCK BY A FEW THINGS. First, I wonder why the photo caption on page 12 with Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor and others is entitled, “Digniied Lineup” while the cover page of the same edition features a stereotypical gay igure? In Steve Blanchard’s own

“Watermark chose a stereotype over dignity and we all suffer because of it.” —GARY RODMAN

words in his Editor’s Desk column, he mentions “you never know who needs a positive example of what it means to live openly. Whether or not you meet that person directly or not, showing him or her that we are no different than our straight neighbors could be the best gift we could ever give.” Again, those are Steve’s words, not mine. I only wonder if the questioning youth and straight neighbors he writes about would have been better educated by seeing the police chief’s photo on the front page instead of the gay stereotype that was chosen? Again, it is Watermark that called the photo on page 12 “Digniied Lineup.” Dignity or a bazaar [sic] stereotype? What do our neighbors see when the Watermark sits on the newsstand? Watermark chose a stereotype over dignity and

SIN, IS A SIN, IS A SIN.”

That’s what I was taught as a child in my Sunday school class. In other words, no other sin is above any other. So telling a lie, for example, is no different than committing an act of mass murder.

Even then that comparison didn’t make sense to me, but then again, neither did the story about the creation of a human being out of one man’s rib. I recall asking my teacher at church about breaking the law, as in speeding or trespassing. She informed me that breaking man’s law is the same as breaking God’s law, according to the dusty Book of Romans. “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established,” is how Romans

WATERMARK STAFF

13:1 reads. The following verses say, “The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.” According to that logic—a term I use loosely here—a whole lot of pastors have some explaining to do this election season. That’s because on Oct. 7, nearly 2,000 pastors publicly and proudly broke the law. They didn’t break the law to correct a wrong, like free a slave or prevent an authority igure from

discriminating against a minority. No, they willingly broke the Johnson Amendment, a regulation adopted by the Internal Revenue Service in 1954 that bans churches and ministers from participating in or intervening in any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition of any candidate or ofice. It’s a form of separation of church and state, which many church leaders argue doesn’t exist, especially when it comes to schools and prayer, for example. This same amendment prevents the government from taxing religious institutions. The deal is simple: Keep your nose out of politics and the government won’t bother you for taxes. Decide you want to be political and get ready to fork over a percentage of your earnings. As we near the Nov. 6 election, the political rhetoric is at an all-time high and left-leaning politicians are the target of religious ridiculousness, especially those candidates who either support marriage equality or a woman’s right to choose her own health care. The pastors were instructed to deliberately apply biblical perspectives to the positions of candidates for public ofice in deiance of the Johnson Amendment. By arguing that a candidate is not following God’s will, these pastors hope to provoke a challenge from the IRS that would enable them to ile a lawsuit and defeat the regulation in court on constitutional grounds.

These men and women who supposedly champion love, peace and salvation for humanity have a reputation for hate speech. Granted, some congregations are not of the same mold as the right-wing Christian groups who constantly ight equality for LGBTs, minorities as a whole and the personal rights of others. And lumping them all together would be unfair. But the actions of the farright continue to give religious institutions a black eye. And for many of us who were raised in a church, it brings questions about the fundamentals we were taught as children. Pastors argue that political speech is a First Amendment issue, and that preventing the pulpit from voicing political views violates freedom of speech and religion. That’s simply untrue. Religious folks are free to share their political views, just not in a religious setting like Sunday school, for instance. They are free to attend candidate rallies or to discuss politics with neighbors and friends outside of the church walls. But doing so within the church, or breaking a law set so clearly by the government, breaks the laws of man and God. The wonderful thing about man’s law, compared to laws that some believe were created by a deity, is that man’s laws can evolve and be open for discussion. Many who believe in God’s laws will only offer lexibility in their translation if it is personally beneicial. It’s another example of cherrypicking the Bible in order to make it serve a speciic purpose. And it seems that during an election year, actively participating in any sin to defeat progress-thinking oficials is acceptable. |  |

Castle Knights to open Nov. 9 Jamie Hyman

JAMIE@WATERMARKONLINE.COM

O

RLANDO | An Orlando bar that has previously operated primarily as a lesbianfocused establishment is returning, this time as an “everybody bar.” Nadia Lazzano, Jackie Gilmore and Kathleen Bones have teamed up to create Castle Knights, a medievalthemed bar located on Edgewater drive in the space previously occupied by Faces, R-Bar and Reckos. Castle Knights will open Nov. 9. “It’ll be a live band for the grand opening,” Lazzano said, but no word yet on who would be performing. The bar will be open each week Thursday through Sunday, from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. “Thursdays we’ll have some drag shows and Fridays we’ll do karaoke, Saturdays we’ll do bands and Sundays will be acoustic,” Lazzano said. The club’s license covers beer and wine only. It was unclear whether the bar would eventually incorporate a liquor license. Lazzano said there’s still quite a bit of work to do before she and the other owners open their doors, including renovations, ixing up the DJ booth and “a lot of cleaning because it was closed for a few months and there are a lot of cobwebs.” Lazzano and Gilmore are in a relationship, but ownership has made a decision to leave the focus on lesbian clientele behind. “Apparently a club as just a lesbian bar didn’t work and so we igured we’ll give it a shot as an everybody bar,” Lazzano said. “We lesbians don’t really support each other, unfortunately, and I think that’s one of the reasons it hasn’t worked.” She said they’re excited about their new venture because they’ll “get to meet new people and entertain people.” |  |

GENERAL ELECTION

VOTING GUIDE ORLANDO LOCAL OFFICES

Long ballot holds important races, issues

O

RLANDO | WITH LESS THAN TWO

weeks before the big Nov. 6 election, all eyes are on President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. But some of the most important, impactful races appear further down the ballot.

Below is a guide to make a dificult ballot easy. An (I) means the candidate is an incumbent.

U.S. SENATE: Democrat—Bill

Nelson (I); Republican—Connie Mack. Nelson is a centrist whose moderate perspective could prove invaluable in the next congress. He’s following his party and his president toward a fuller conception of LGBT equality. Mack is a lazy, insubstantial and partisan public servant. Vote Bill Nelson.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 5: ORLANDO | The Metropolitan Business Association (MBA) is seeking nominations for ive of its 11 board positions. The open positions are for vice president, treasurer and three board members-at-large. Any MBA member in good standing may nominate himself or herself ahead of the Nov. 16 deadline. There are some qualiications: Nominees must have 3-plus years of professional business experience, a commitment to the MBA’s mission, ability to attend the MBA’s annual meeting and be a business level member in good standing for more than six months or have volunteered for one year with Come Out With Pride or Converge Orlando. Elections will take place Dec. 5 and the monthly MBA mixer at the group’s Orlando headquarters. |  |

Democrat—Corrine Brown (I); Republican—LeAnne Kolb. Brown favors repeal of DOMA. Kolb would repeal the Affordable Health Care Act and abolish the EPA. Vote Corrine Brown.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 7: Democrat-Jason Kendall; Republican--John Mica (I). Kendall is inexperienced but impressive, and unlike Mica he supports ENDA and would repeal DOMA. Vote Jason Kendall. U.S. HOUSE DIST. 8:

Democrat—Shannon Roberts;

OCT. 25 - NOV. 7, 2012 // ISSUE 19.22

Republican—Bill Posey (I). Posey has has been hijacked by the Tea Party and his hyper-partisanship is exactly what this country doesn’t need.Roberts is a Harvardeducated novice who worked as a strategic planner for NASA— perfect for this constituency. Vote Shannon Roberts.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 9:

Democrat—Alan Grayson; Republican—Todd Long. Grayson supports full marriage equality and ENDA. Tea Party favorite Long is a loose cannon not qualiied for important ofice. Vote Alan Grayson.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 10:

Democrat—Val Demings; Republican—Daniel Webster (I). Former Orlando Police Chief Val Demings has introduced herself to more rural voters in western District 10 with a compelling story: a father who worked as a janitor, mother who worked as a maid, and a 27-year career with the Orlando Police Department that ended in the top position. During three years as Chief, Demings saw the crime rate drop

watermarkonline.com

by 10% thanks to an emphasis on high crime areas, street-level enforcement and gun coniscation. The candidates diverge most vividly on the issue of abortion, which Webster opposes even in cases of rape and incest. Demings notes that she’s investigated rape leading to pregnancy in girls as young as 11. Webster is a Tea Party vote with little excitement for his job and even less understanding of LGBT equality. Vote Val Demings.

STATE SENATE DIST. 15:

Democrat—Stego Blue; Republican—Kelli Stargel. Stargel sponsored a bill that would require teachers to grade parents on their involvement in their children’s education. Blue is navy veteran and novice who supports statewide non-discrimination protections and repeal of DOMA. Vote Stego Blue.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 29:

Democrat—Mike Clelland; Republican—Chris Dorworth (I). Dorworth is an ultraconservative disaster whose personal inancial problems evidence a corrupt, undisciplined politician. Clelland is a novice, but he promises to bring ethics and cordiality to Tallahassee. Vote for Mike Clelland.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 30:

Democrat—Karen Castor Dentel; Republican—Scott Plakon. Plakon has a 100% voting record with the ultraright wing Christian Coalition and fought to funnel tax money to religious institutions. Dentel is a public school teacher and is endorsed by Equality Florida Vote Karen Castor Dentel.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 43:

Democrat—Eileen Game; Republican—Mike LaRosa. Game is an LGBT-supportive and EQFL-endorsed Dem. Vote Eileen Game.

44: Democrat-Ricardo Rangel; Republican-Art Otero. Kissimmee vice mayor Otero has more experience, but is otherwise unimpressive. Vote Ricardo Rangel. STATE HOUSE DIST. 45: Democrat-Randolph Bracy; Republican-Ronney Oliveira. Oliveira is a family values pastor. Bracy has an impressive background in education and public service, and good ideas for revitalizing West Orange County. Vote Randolph Bracy.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 47:

Democrat—Linda Stewart; Republican—Bob Brooks. This District, presently held by Rep. Scott Randolph, has been redrawn to give Republicans a slight registration advantage over Democrats. In 1996, Brooks sent a letter to Disney expressing disappointment when it extended health care beneits to same-sex domestic partners. Sixteen years later he says he no longer focuses on social issues and supports domestic partner registries. We think he would be dangerous amidst the ultraconservatism of Tallahassee. Stewart has been a champion for full LGBT equality and she earned an endorsement by Equality Florida. She played an inluential role in passage of the county’s HRO and DPR. Vote Linda Stewart.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 49:

Democrat—Joe Saunders; Republican—Marco Pena. Pena works in health care, postures himself as a tax-hating advocate for big business, and has been endorsed by the Florida Chamber of Commerce. In a less toxic political environment, he would likely make a creditable public servant. But there’s little to indicate he wouldn’t march in step with extremist GOP leadership in Tallahassee. As the former statewide ield director for Equality Florida, Saunders is well-known to the LGBT community. He’s smart, articulate and effective, and played a major role in recent non-discrimination and DPR successes throughout the state. His talent is sorely needed in Tallahassee to build

coalitions that will protect and expand Florida’s struggling middle class, improve our public education system and support small business. Vote Joe Saunders.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 50:

Democrat—Sean Ashby; Republican—Tom Goodson. Public high school teacher Ashby will provide muchneeded support for education initiatives. Goodson is tight with business lobbyists and suspect on education. Vote Sean Ashby.

FLORIDA SUPREME COURT JUSTICE: The attempt to

unseat three respected justices is an alarming attempt by an arrogant state GOP to punish them for principled but contrary positions. If successful, it would blur the important separation between branches of government. Vote “Yes” to retain Fred Lewis, Barbara Pariente and Peggy Quince.

CIRCUIT JUDGE GROUP 7: Leticia “Letty” Marques; Joel Wilson. Marques has an impressive 29-year legal career spanning criminal, family and personal injury law. She’s respected by peers and connected to the LGBT community. Vote Leticia Marques.

COUNTY COMM. DIST. 3:

Republican—Pete Clarke; Independent—Lui Damiani. Damiani held this position for 16 months and received high marks, including an endorsement by Equality Florida. Gov. Rick Scott replaced him with John Martinez, who is not running. Clarke was exposed for nonpayment of property taxes. Vote Lui Damiani.

ORANGE CO. CLERK OF THE COURTS: Tim Adams; Lydia

GENERAL ELECTION

VOTING GUIDE Festival to ‘Erase Hate’

TAMPA BAY LOCAL OFFICES

Zack Caruso

CARUSO@WATERMARKONLINE.COM

T

AMPA | Erase Hate Tampa Bay will arrive Nov. 4 in Curtis Hixon Park. Boasting activities for families, carnival games, and live music, the festival seeks to bring awareness to the organization and to its mission of creating a community free of discrimination. The festival was initially slated for last April, however an impending tropical storm forced the date to be pushed back. “We had everything ready to go and the day before, we ended up having to cancel, or the storm would have canceled it for us,” says Executive Director Barbie Winterbottom. “This is really our big event to say ‘Hey Tampa Bay, this is who we are, this is what we stand for, and this is what we want to do.’” Still in its infancy, Erase Hate Tampa Bay—a 501c non-proit organization—was irst conceived a little more than a year ago with the mission of eliminating prejudices, discrimination, and exclusion within the community and society. “We as a people have constantly suffered discrimination, genocide, hatred, and these types of behaviors,” said Winterbottom. “How do you teach young people about living in an environment of acceptance, how do you become advocates for one another, and how do you teach people to be kind and live in a more peaceful place? And that’s really where Erase Hate Tampa Bay was born.” The organization seeks to eradicate all types of discrimination and prejudices without focusing their efforts on just one speciic area. Winterbottom said groups have offered to partner with Erase Hate Tampa Bay, but the requests must be respectfully declined. “By doing that we will be excluding others, and our message is that we are inclusive of everyone,” she said Florida is ranked third in the country in regards to registered hate groups, a statistic the organization seeks to change. Part of the effort includes implementing programs into schools that teach kids how to be advocates for one another, and how to learn about diversity in society and culture. The Erase Hate Festival is the next step in establishing Erase Hate Tampa Bay’s presence in the area, and reaching the community. For more information on the festival, visit EraseHateTampaBay.org. |  |

Local races and issues face voters Nov. 6

A

Steve Blanchard EDITOR@WATERMARKONLINE.COM

S WE FINALLY COME UPON THE

2012 Presidential Election on Nov. 6, we must also remember the long list of local races in our nearby cities and counties that directly affect our local communities.

This year’s ballot is incredibly full, and we have researched the local races and which candidates are best suited to not only serve our respective communities, but the LGBT community as well. Florida voters must ind representation in new districts, consider constitutional amendments and determine which local oficials have their best interests at heart. Below is a guide to help voters navigate the mountains of decisions facing them on Nov. 6. Most candidates are easy to research online and an abundance of information is available. This guide is based on our own research and is geared toward LGBT equality. An “I” means that candidate is the incumbent.

PINELLAS COUNTY

SHERIFF: Democrat—Scott Swope; Republican—Bob Gualtieri (I). Gov. Rick Scottappointed Bob Gualtieri has not undone the LGBT provisions incorporated by his predecessor, but he has not offered any plans

OCT. 25 - NOV. 7, 2012 // ISSUE 19.22

for improving the county’s support of its LGBT citizens. Swope, a Largo native, has actively worked with courting the LGBT vote. Vote Scott Swope.

SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS:

Democrat—Jack Killingsworth; Republican—Deborah Clark (I). Incumbent Clark has been a vocal skeptic of Gov. Scott’s efforts to purge the state’s voter rolls. Killingsworth is worthy for the position but he offers no new insight into voter technology. Vote Deborah Clark.

COUNTY COMMISSION:

Pinellas County could catch up to its progressive cities this year by embracing a countywide domestic partnership registry. Democrat Janet Long is much more LGBT-friendly than incumbent Republican Neil Brickield. Since taking ofice four years ago, Brickield has been swayed by ill-informed Tea-Partiers. Long is a socially moderate and iscally conservative alternative who recognizes the importance the registry and recognizes the government’s responsibility to

protect its citizens. Replacing incumbent Nancy Bostock with long-time LGBT advocate and former state legislator Charlie Justice in District 3. Bostock sticks to party lines and is too easily inluenced by Tea Party representatives. Incumbent Democrat Ken Welch has earned the right to remain on the commission by showing his respect for science, research and the LGBT community. His challenger, Republican Buck Walz, doesn’t have the qualiications to move the county into the future. Vote Janet Long, Charlie Justice and Ken Welch.

SCHOOL BOARD DIST. 1:

Janet Clark (I); Elliott Stem. Janet Clark is a non-confrontational board member but remains supportive of LGBT youth in the schools. Stern, 73, has school experience but seems out-oftouch with the needs of today’s youth. Vote Janet Clark.

SCHOOL BOARD DIST. 7:

Rene Flowers; Glen Gilzean (I). Rene Flowers supports diversity and has the experience needed to ensure our schools are safe for LGBT youth. Gilzean is disconnected and a newcomer to Pinellas County appointed by Gov. Scott. Vote Rene Flowers.

Mack. With 12 years experience in ofice, Nelson is a centrist whose moderate perspective could prove invaluable in the next congress. He’s following his party and his president toward a fuller conception of LGBT equality. Mack is a lazy, insubstantial partisan public servant. Vote Bill Nelson.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 12:

Democrat—Jonathan Snow; Republican—Gus Bilirakis (I). Snow and Bilirakis offer a stark contrast concerning LGBT rights. Snow supports the repeal of DOMA and believes protecting LGBTS from discrimination at their jobs is a priority. Bilirakis wants a constitutional amendment deining marriage as between one man and one woman. It’s a clear choice. Vote Jonathan Snow.

U.S. HOUSE DIST 13:

Democrat—Jessica Ehrlich; Republican—Bill Young (I). Bill Young voted against the Affordable Health Care Act and against LGBT measures several times, including his support of DOMA. Ehrlich is an equality candidate who has embraced the LGBT community and has vowed to ight for marriage equality, among other measures. Vote Jessica Ehrlich.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 14:

Democrat—Kathy Castor (I); Republican—EJ Otero Jr.. For years, Castor has been an advocate for the LGBT community, ighting our rights when other politicians used us as a dividing issue. Otero is a political newcomer who does not support Obama’s plans regarding equality. Vote Kathy Castor.

STATE SENATE DIST. 20:

14

Democrat—Ashley RhodesCourter; Republican—Jack Latvala (I). Ashley RhodesCourter could be the shot in the arm the State senate needs when it comes to LGBT rights and human rights in general. Incumbent Latvala received a 0% rating on LGBT rights when he was polled in 2010. Vote Ashley Rhodes-Courter.

HE LAST THING HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY NEEDS IS A RETURN TO THE DRAMA OF RONDA STORMS. The former commissioner is famous for her successful ight to ban Gay Pride in the county back in 2005 and her dramatic rhetoric concerning those who oppose her would not be helpful in restoring order in an ofice still shaken by a porn scandal from outgoing appraiser Rob Turner. STATE HOUSE DIST. 65:

Democrat—Carl Zimmerman; Republican—Peter Nehr (I). Nehr has yet to show any inluence among his colleagues and is a reliable vote for Republican leadership, no matter the issue. Zimmerman is an advocate for the LGBT community. Vote Carl Zimmerman.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 66:

Democrat—Mary Louise Ambrose; Republican—Larry Ahern (I). Newcomer Ambrose has received enthusiastic support from equality groups like the Stonewall Democrats not only because of her strong support for LGBT equality, but because of Ahern’s ties to Teapublican groups. Ahern considers himself a “Teavangelical” and is opposed to anything advancing LGBT equality in our state. Besides ighting for LGBT equality, Ambrose is also ighting for women’s rights. She believes the Legislature has dismissed women’s health care needs and is on track to returning women to their status in 1960. She has vowed to not allow that to happen. Vote Mary Louise Ambrose.

Democrat—Ben Farrell; Republican—Ed Hooper. Firsttime politician Ben Farrell believes in technology, including a light-rail system for Pinellas County and its surrounding areas. Hooper fought the plan and appears to be in Gov. Scott’s pocket. Hooper’s his far-right stances on abortion and other social issues causes concern. Vote Ben Farrell.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 68:

Democrat—Dwight Dudley; Republican—Frank Farkas. The Tampa Bay Times, Equality Florida and the Stonewall Democrats all support Dudley, and he has a 100% rating on LGBT issues like domestic partnership registries and his support of marriage equality. Vote Dwight Dudley.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 69:

Democrat—Josh Shulman; Republican—Kathleen Peters. Shulman is a social liberal and iscal conservative while Peters will only say that she supports small government. Shulman impressed Equality Florida with his complete support of LGBT issues like the repeal of DOMA and adoption equality. Vote Josh Shulman.

Higginbotham four years ago. Higginbotham is very socially conservative and has refused to even recognized LGBT events, like GaYbor Days in Ybor City. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY COUNTY COMMISSION

For the irst time in history, Hillsborough County could have two openly gay commissioners. That’s if District 6 Democrat Kevin Beckner retains his seat and newcomer Mark Nash defeats incumbent Al Higginbotham in District 4. A win by both men could inally set the notably socially conservative commission on a path toward LGBT equality. Incumbent Beckner rose to his seat in 2008 and has not only been a constant force for LGBT equality in his county, but for the entire citizenship as a whole. His well-spoken, thought out plans have led to several improvements, most recently the creation of a diversity council to ensure the respect of minority groups in Hillsborough. His challenger, Tea-party candidate Margaret Iuculano has relied only on personal attacks, and a majority of her claims are false! Vote for Carol Kurdell.

SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS:

Democrat—Craig Latimer (I); Republican—Rich Glorioso. Latimer has not only restored respect to the one-time iascoridden ofice that suffered under Buddy Johnson, but provided ways to meet the ongoing demand for early voting for both Democrats and Republicans. Vote Craig Latimer.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 12:

Democrat—Jonathan Snow; Republican—Gus Bilirakis (I). See Pinellas endorsement. Vote Jonathan Snow.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 14:

Democrat—Kathy Castor (I); Republican—EJ Otero Jr.. See Pinelals endorsement. Vote Kathy Castor.

U.S. HOUSE DIST. 17:

Democrat—William Bronson; Republican—Thomas Rooney (I). Bronson switched party afiliation, citing the “right-wing takeover” of his previous party. His campaign as a Democrat has showed his strong support for LGBT equality and separates him from Thomas Rooney, the incumbent who wants to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act. Vote William Bronson.

STATE SENATE DIST. 24:

Democrat—Elizabeth Belcher; Republican—Tom Lee. Belcher is a former criminal investigator with the IRS and her cases

Democrat—Paula House; Republican—Bill Galvano. House has a plan to protect coastal counties and improve education that Bill Galvano seems to lack. Both have impressive resumes packed with committee experience, but House’s special detail to LGBT equality makes her a favorite. Vote Paula House.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 57:

Democrat—Bruce Barnett; Republican—Jake Raburn. Barnett supports a repeal of DOMA, recognition of domestic partnerships and safe schools for LGBT youth. Raburn has interesting ideas to improve the economy, but is focused on things like expanding the Panama Canal. Vote Bruce Barnett.

Democrat—Jose Vazquez; Republican—Daniel Raulerson. Raulerson has more experience as a former Plant City commissioner and mayor and has plans to simplify the tax law. While Vazquez has expressed support for the LGBT community, he just doesn’t have the experience— or the clean record—we need to rejuvinate Tallahassee. Vote Daniel Raulerson.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 59:

Democrat—Gail Gottlieb; Republican—Ross Spano. Gottleib would be the right choice in this lawyer vs. lawyer race. She is committed to total LGBT equality and has a penchant for inding corporate loopholes that would otherwise allow companies to shift proits to out-of-state subsidiaries. Vote Gail Gottlieb.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 62:

Democrat—Janet Cruz (I); Republican—Wesley Warren. Keeping Cruz in this democratic-leaning district makes sense, especially considering her sponsored

bill expediting the return of certain felony criminals a chance to return to the arena of healthcare. Warren lacks the education and experience. Vote Janet Cruz.

STATE HOUSE DIST. 63:

Democrat—Mark Danish; Republican—Shawn Harrison (I). Danish supports the repeal of DOMA, recognizing domestic partnerships and ensuring adoption equality. Harrison does not and leans too far to the right to ensure equality in the next term. Vote Mark Danish.

(I); Democrat—Adam Trebrugge. Sometimes it’s inaction that can show a candidate’s stance on LGBT issues, and since taking ofice, Jim Boyd has not vocally opposed nor supported the LGBT community. His challenger, Tebrugge, however, not only received a perfect score from Equality Florida, he was also a very active and visual participant at Sarasota Pride 2012. Vote Adam Trebrugge

SARASOTA COUNTY COMMISSION DIST. 3:

Republican—Christina Robinson (I); Democrat— Jennifer Cohen. With the recent passage of a domestic partner registry within the City of Sarasota, it’s expected that the county will soon take up the measure. Cohen has expressed strong support for the LGBT community, including supporting antibullying programs in area schools, diversity training for employees and a countywide partnership registry. Robinson has not even addressed a registry to protect unmarried gay and straight couples. Vote Jennifer Cohen

COUNTY COMMISSION DIST. 5: Republican—

Charles Hines; Write-In—William Slider. Dist. 5. Longtime Jon Thaxton couldn’t seek re-election due to voter-imposed term limits. Charles Hines served on boards and foundations and has a history of volunteering in grassroots organizations. Sarasota Pride hits 5,000 mark Steve Blanchard EDITOR@WATERMARKONLINE.COM

S

ARASOTA | One thing truly struck Cindy Barnes as she watched a record crowd of nearly 5,000 enjoy Sarasota Pride at J.D. Hamel Park on Oct. 20—the number of LGBT people she didn’t recognize. “There were so many young people there and gay people I had never seen before,” Barnes said following the largest outdoor Sarasota Pridefest to date. “I think that because it has been an outdoor event for three years now, people are used to coming whether they are gay or straight. There is no longer that issue of ‘I saw this person from work at a gay event.’” The Sarasota Police Department estimated the igure of nearly 5,000 and about 2,000 of that total can be attributed to participants in a walk through Sarasota supporting President Barack Obama’s reelection bid. Barnes said that when the walk ended, the park was looded—just as she had expected. While the numbers and the political support were huge for Barnes, she was most impressed with the number of families and young children enjoying the sunny, breezy day along Sarasota’s waterfront. The Church of the Trinity Metropolitan Community Church sponsored the brand

new Family Zone this year, which featured face painting, food and a large bounce house. The Pride event was a irst for Natasha Kim and her daughter, Ariela, 4, who live in Englewood. “I’ve never been to a gay pride celebration before,” Kim said. “But I wanted to come this year to teach my daughter about acceptance and diversity. What better way to do that than in a family-friendly atmosphere celebrating equality?” Kim and her daughter weren’t the only straight allies at Sarasota Pridefest. Families and straight couples were seen constantly among the vendor booths, and many stopped to have their pictures taken with area drag performers. “I didn’t talk to one vendor this year who wasn’t thrilled with the festival or the turnout,” Barnes said. This year, 75 volunteers helped

keep Sarasota Pridefest on track. The teams of people in purple T-shirts helped with everything from setting up to tear down, Barnes said, and 15 members of Trinity MCC kept the Family Zone running smoothly. “I never have had a problem inding volunteers,” Barnes said. “We had so many that I actually had to turn some people away. That says a lot about this community.” With the success of 2012 irmly under its belt, Sarasota Pride has secured Oct. 19, 2013, as its celebration date next year. More details on next year’s festival will be released at SarasotaPride.org. |  |

and participation in children’s education between partners. The battle to enact the registry has been long-fought in Sarasota, with early stages setting up the vote as far back as early July. Former commissioner Ken Shelin organized the movement and presented it to the commission. If the county creates a similar registry, the domestic partner ordinance could merge with it. If the county does ever move forward with such a registry, those who have already registered in the city limits would also be recognized in the city. Commissioner Shannon

Snyder expects the registry to be extremely popular. “It’s not the forms—it’s the day that all this gets started. We may not even be able to do it at City Hall. We may have to do it at the Civic Center or over at the Van Wezel.” Tom Barwin, City Manager, agrees that the registry will be popular, but he’s conident that City Hall can manage the irst few days of registrants. No fee has been announced for registration just yet, but commissioners expect it to be around $35, which is the norm in surrounding areas. |  |

North Florida couple at center of Iowa gay marriage fraud case Wire report

W

ILLISTON, FLA. | A Florida man is angry a rural Iowa court oficial duped him and his partner into paying for an invalid marriage license, saying the case illustrates the dificulty facing gay couples who cannot get married in their own states. Joab Penney, 28, of Williston, Fla., said he recently learned the license obtained in February was bogus after he contacted an attorney to get a divorce. ``I was pretty upset,’’ Penney said. ``What she did was wrong.’’ Penney spoke two days after Grundy County deputy clerk of court Brigitte Van Nice was arrested and charged with two counts of forgery and one count of perjury. Prosecutors say Van Nice told Penney and his partner, Joseph Parker, they could get married in Iowa without coming

to the state. A criminal complaint says Van Nice, 42, iled documents falsely claiming she oficiated a Valentine’s Day ceremony and included the phony signatures of two witnesses. It says the couple paid her $150 and was issued a license. The arrest is believed to be the irst of its kind in Iowa, one of six states that allow gay marriage, said Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Larry Hedlund. Prosecutors say Van Nice told the county recorder’s staff she met Penney and Parker randomly at a Waterloo truck stop and was asked to oficiate their wedding. Penney said Friday he’s never set foot in Iowa, which allows individuals from out-ofstate to be married as long as they come to the state for a ceremony witnessed by two people. Penney said he and Parker had been together for a long time and

wanted to get married in Iowa because Florida bars the practice. He said they randomly contacted the Grundy County courthouse after a Google search and ended up talking with Van Nice, who sent them application materials. The couple broke up shortly after the marriage for reasons that Penney did not want to discuss. Florida divorce attorney Beth

She said the documents included a hand-written note with the application materials that Van Nice had mailed from home instead of the courthouse, which seemed suspicious. Van Nice’s attorney said she plans to plead not guilty. Prosecutor Jennifer Miller said charges will not be iled against the men, who believed they had been legally married. “We determined that they basically - JOAB PENNEY, FLORIDA RESIDENT were the ones that were duped,” Gordon said she immediately Miller said. “I don’t think they suspected something was off were trying to fraudulently obtain when Penney brought her the a marriage license. equality expert and former legal director of the Williams Institute at UCLA, called the arrest “quite unusual” and said she had not heard of anything similar elsewhere. Lee Badgett, research director at the Williams Institute at University of California Los Angeles, a think tank that studies gay rights, said it reminded her of how some Texas couples had been trying to get married a few years ago in Washington D.C., which recognizes marriage equality, through a video feed, a practice that has been dropped. “It really illustrates a very, very big thing about gay marriage,’’ said Penney, who works in a restaurant kitchen. ``Isn’t the United States supposed to be free? Why can’t same-sex people be married and be who they want to be? Why can’t all the states have it? It’s ridiculous.’’ |  |

MAN ACCUSED OF LURING MISSISSIPPI MAYOR FROM WIFE The former wife of Southaven (Miss.) Mayor Greg Davis is seeking $1 million in a lawsuit against a 26-year-old Starkville man who she says broke up her marriage by luring Davis away from her. In her alienation of affection suit filed Oct. 18, Suzann Savage Davis says her former husband’s longtime ``deviant homosexual adulterous association’’ with Jansen Fair came to light when she on April 5, 2010, ``inadvertently discovered intimate communications’’ in which Fair told Davis he was looking forward to a tryst in Las Vegas ``locked away in bed in each other’s arms.’’

HONEY BOO BOO’S GAY UNCLE REVEALS BRUTAL BULLYING In an effort to help empower LGBT youth on Spirit Day, Honey Boo Boo’s Uncle Lee “Poodle” Thompson on Oct. 19 talked about how hard it was growing up gay in the South. Thompson said in a video message, “Being gay in the South ... people don’t like it. Growing up as a kid, I was bullied day in and day out ... broke ribs, dislocated jaw, cars vandalized to this day.” He added, “It is okay to be who you are ... don’t let anybody change that.”

CUOMO BACKS GOP SENATOR WHO VOTED FOR GAY MARRIAGE Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Oct. 18 endorsed Republican Sen. Stephen Saland of Poughkeepsie, who cast the historic 32nd vote needed a year ago to legalize gay marriage in New York. Cuomo has long said he would support the GOP senators who voted for legalization of same-sex marriage. While most of the Senate’s Republican majority opposed the measure, Saland and three others voted for it, risking their careers in what they said were personal votes of conscience.

Survey: 3.4 percent of US adults are LGBT Wire Report

N

EW YORK, N.Y. | A new survey estimates that 3.4 percent of U.S. adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, in what may be the largest study ever aimed at calculating the nation’s LGBT population. The Gallup survey released Oct. 18 was based on interviews with more than 121,000 people. ``Contemporary media often think of LGBT people as disproportionately white, male, urban and pretty wealthy,’’ said the report’s lead author, demographer Gary Gates of the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute. ``But this data reveal that relative to the general population, the LGBT

population has a larger proportion of nonwhite people and clearly is not overly wealthy.’’ According to the survey, which was conducted between June and September, 4.6% of AfricanAmericans identify as LGBT, along with 4% of Hispanics, 4.3% of Asians and 3.2% of whites. Overall, a third of those identifying as LGBT are nonwhite, the report said. There was a slight gender difference—3.6% of women identiied as LGBT, compared to 3.3% of men. And younger adults, aged 18 to 29, were more likely than their elders to identify as LGBT. One striking difference: Among those 18 to 29, 8.3% of women identify as LGBT, compared with 4.6% of men the same age. In contrast to some previous,

smaller studies, the Gallup survey found that identiication as LGBT is highest among Americans with the lowest levels of education. Among those with a high school education or less, 3.5% identify as LGBT, compared with 2.8% of those with a college degree and 3.2% of those with postgraduate education. Among those who report income, about 16% of LGBT individuals have incomes above $90,000 per year, compared with 21% of the overall adult population, the Gallup survey found. It said 35% of those who identify as LGBT report incomes of less than $24,000 a year, compared to 24% for the population in general. The survey noted that its indings did not account for LGBT people who, for whatever reason, did not want to acknowledge their sexual orientation in the interviews. |  |

The 2-1 decision came after a woman sued the government, saying the law required her to pay more than $363,000 in federal estate tax after her partner of 44 years died. In writing the majority opinion, Judge Dennis Jacobs said discrimination against gays should be scrutinized by the courts just as discrimination against women was scrutinized in the 1970s. “The question is not whether homosexuals have achieved political successes over the years; they clearly have. The question is whether they have the strength to politically protect themselves from wrongful discrimination,’’ said Jacobs, who was appointed to the bench in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush.

Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, which iled arguments in support of DOMA, called the decision ``yet another example of judicial activism and elite judges imposing their views on the American people.’’ The Defense of Marriage Act was passed by bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. Since then, many states have banned gay marriage but several have approved it, including Massachusetts and New York. The government defended the federal law until President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder in early 2011 directed attorneys to stop doing so. |  |

Court: US law defining marriage unconstitutional Wire Report NEW YORK, N.Y. | Saying the gay population has “suffered a history of discrimination,’’ an appeals court in New York ruled Oct. 18 that a U.S. law deining marriage as between a man and a woman is unconstitutional. The national ight over gay marriage is expected to reach the country’s top court soon. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found no reason the Defense of Marriage Act could be used to deny beneits to married gay couples. The law denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and afirms the right of states to refuse to recognize such marriages.

the presidential election is the most important election in our lifetime. That not only holds true in 2012, it is an election that will truly deine the future—especially regarding LGBT equality in our country.

In his irst term, President Barack Obama has proven he is a leader who values diversity and, most importantly, equality. During his irst term in the White House we have seen more

This man, our 44th president, has endorsed a legislative effort to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which currently outlaws marriage equality. He is also the irst sitting president in history to personally support the rights of same-sex couples to be recognized by the federal government in the institution of marriage. may only be in Pinellas County, but for more than ive decades, the congressman’s antiLGBT inluence has impacted the entire the State of Florida and the country. Young is seeking his 22nd term in Congress this Nov. 6 and has served 41 years in that post. Prior to that, the Republican was a Florida state senator for 10 years. It was during his terms as a senator that Young irst declared his anti-LGBT stance—in a very public and horrifying way. Young was a member of the state-sanctioned group called “the John’s Committee”

in the 1950s and 1960s. That committee was based on the notorious McCarthy Panel and functioned as a state-sponsored hate group that investigated and persecuted homosexuals in those two decades. The so-called committee was led by Florida State Senator Charley Eugene Johns, and Young served on the committee in Tallahassee from

1962 until 1965, the year its funding was cut. Today, Young is the only surviving member of the group. Young has never denied his involvement in the committee and has yet to apologize for the group’s purge of FSU, USF, UF and other state organizations of “dangerous homosexuals.” While calls and emails to his campaign headquarters seeking a response to this story went unreturned, his opponent in the 2012 election, Jessica Ehrlich, has seized on his involvement in the anti-LGBT committee and is hopeful that she can replace the incumbent. “The fact is, Young was an active, vocal and unabashed member of the John’s Committee and their

The Johns Committee was formed in 1956 with the intent to investigate and eliminate communists in state agencies. By 1957, the committee reported that it believed the Communist Party had iniltrated the NAACP and requested the organization’s member lists, which led to a two-year legal battle. When the U.S. Supreme Court denied the committee’s request, it turned its focus to the “subversive” homosexual community. This began a seven-year purge of Florida State University, the University of South Florida, the University of Florida and other state-funded organizations. He lived to tell of his experience in 1991. “It was a dreadful time in Florida for LGBT people,” James Schnur, an assistant librarian at USF St. Petersburg shared. “These guys would even go around to suspected gatherings of gay people and write down the license plate numbers of all the cars within a two block radius. “It didn’t matter if you were just going to the convenience store next door and happened to be parked there, they took your name and you were suspected of being gay unless you could prove otherwise. They then called these people into often rented hotel rooms and interrogated them about their sex lives recorded on reel-to-reel tape.”

Yet, when questioned 30 years after the dissolution of the committee, Young attempted to downplay his involvement. “I was not a major part of that committee,” Young said in 1993, after the records had been unsealed. “I came on the committee in its closing days.” Records indicate otherwise,

However, during his tenure that number rose to 110 with at least 200-250 educators and students questioned, shamed and blackmailed.

NO CHANGE OF HEART

Even though Young’s ofice did not respond to repeated attempts for an interview regarding this story, his voting record relating to LGBT issues seems to be in line with his beliefs of the past.

He voted for the Defense of Marriage Act and he voted irst to delay the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. He then voted against repealing it. He has openly opposed expanding the Federal Hate Crime Law, which would have extended constitutional protections to cover offenses based upon sexual orientation or gender identify, and he has publicly stated he is in support of a federal amendment to ban marriage equality. Ehrlich wants to stop Young’s homophobic ways by defeating the incumbent this November. She’s hopeful that the LGBT community

can help her do that. “My father, a local attorney and Holocaust survivor, taught me at a young age that discrimination in any form is wrong,” said Ehrlich. “Members of the LGBT community are taxpaying citizens trying to live, work and raise their families. As members of our community, they should be afforded the same rights, opportunities and recognition for their contributions to our society as all Americans.” Ehrlich has been endorsed by eQuality Giving and the Pinellas Stonewall Democrats and received a perfect score on Equality Florida’s questionnaire about LGBT issues. “St. Petersburg has a proud LGBT community and I am humbled to have their support,” she said. “St Pete Pride, one of the biggest celebrations in the south, is a true testament to how far the LGBT community in Florida has come since the time of Bill Young’s tenure on the John’s Committee.” |  |

concern for you personally, look at the other aspects of Obama’s LGBT support. He created a task force on bullying that tackles the epidemic in schools, extended hospital visitation and medical decision-making rights to LGBT patients and their partners, and included speciic data on health needs of lesbians and bisexual women in the Health Resources and Services Administration’s “Women’s Health USA 2011” report for the irst time. Vice President Joe Biden is just as supportive of LGBT equality, if not more so. It was Biden, remember, who personally supported marriage equality a week before the president shared his personal evolution on the subject. Re-electing this ticket will continue the country on the path to equality, and to not do so will be disastrous for the vision of a future that embraces LGBTs in the United States. Keep this in mind: In the next four years the president will likely replace at least two aging Supreme Court

MAGIC & SOLAR BEARS

To oppose him or, even worse, to not vote at all, would derail the equality movement indefinitely. justices. This is momentous in an era where the Court will hear a record number of cases concerning the treatment of America’s LGBT citizens. Who do you want sitting on the Court when Proposition 8 inally makes it to the Supreme Court? Justices appointed by the LGBT-supportive Obama or the anti-LGBT GOP ticket? Obama has a history of appointing diverse, progressive thinking, qualiied individuals in his cabinet and to the Court. The Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan ticket has embraced the Republican platform that distinctly denies marriage equality, and Ryan went

a step further to ensure the anti— gay American Family Association that he and his running mate would ight LGBT equality with all of their power. The United States has struggled in the New Millennium. We’ve seen a 21st Century of war, near economic collapse and a struggle for civil rights not seen since the 1950s and 1960s. This president has kept us from reaching the point of no return and despite a Congress that refuses to cooperate, he averted a second Great Depression. Giving up on him now, with so much more to do, would be a mistake, regardless of your own

party afiliation. The economy is showing signs of recovery as home prices rise and the unemployment rate falls. The auto industry is back at peak performance and one of the greatest threats to the American way of life—Osama bin Laden— is dead! A man who embraces every citizen of the United States deserves to serve out a second term. And by seeing every citizen as equal, this country can continue its path back to prosperity. The choice is clear, especially when the alternative is two men who have both spoken proudly against our equality,

list qualiications that are ever-changing and avoid offering speciics related to anything outside denying civil rights to certain segments of the population. For the irst time in the history of this country, we have the opportunity to truly take giant steps forward to recognizing that “all men are created equal” in the United States. The only way to do that is to reelect President Barack Obama to a second term in ofice. For local election recommendations, see pages 10 and 14.

Jim Walker WALKER@WATERMARKONLINE.COM

I

LOVE HALLOWEEN. IT

presents so many opportunities for expression and creativity. My excitement over the holiday has frequently gotten me into trouble, but my costumes have taught me the important lesson of always being me.

During college, I worked for a small, commuter airline with stations in tiny airports throughout the western United States. I was based in Bakersield, Calif., where our irst light of the day at 6 a.m. had only 19 passengers. I was the sole agent on duty Halloween morning and thought it would be fun to dress up in costume. Imagine the surprise of the lying public when they were checked-in, boarded, and their plane dispatched by the Grim Reaper! My boss came in two hours after the light departed. She began hyperventilating, but somehow managed to get the words out “Go home. You just need to go home.” I was suspended for two days and given a warning. Years later while a reporter for the CBS station in Dallas, I had put on considerable muscle and thought it would be fun to celebrate Halloween as the Incredible Hulk. My costume would be small, tornup cargo shorts and lots of green body paint. The Halloween store assured me the paint would easily

wash-off in a matter of hours. My boyfriend at the time covered me head-to-toe in the dark green paint. The outit, if you can call it that, was a huge hit in the gay Oaklawn neighborhood on Halloween night. We had fantastic fun for hours, until later that night in the shower when I discovered the paint was not coming-off very well. For the next six days, every time I appeared on-camera on-the-air in front of thousands of viewers, I had a strong greenish tint. The following year, I felt a nautical theme would be fun: I would dress as a sailor. My costume was inexpensive and minimal. I wore boots, tight blue shorts, a sailor cap, and a “crackerjack” (look it up) around my neck. This costume again was well received—that is until pictures of me fully revealed appeared in the local gay newspaper. The management at my TV station was not thrilled. As a frequent host for gay bingo in North Texas, I helped to raise thousands of dollars for the Resource Center of Dallas. Our bingo always had a theme to encourage the costumes: Ken & Barbie bingo, Superhero bingo, Greek God bingo, Under-the-Sea bingo and many more. It was usually me and two drag queens pulling the balls. Halloween is a chance to break free from the parameters of our public image, to dress as our fantasies, to use our imaginations as far as our budgets and skills will allow. It’s a chance to attend parties to show a side of us few may know about. It’s an entree into the esoteric workings of our minds, without the sometimes intense judgment of the everyday world. Halloween is a reason to show off our beautiful bodies, our amazing minds, our creative skills, and our sense—or nonsense—of humor. We can be as provocative or as ridiculous as we want. Depending on your belief, Halloween has traditionally been the time of year when the physical and supernatural worlds were closest and magical things could happen. But what if we could be what we wanted to be all the time? Are you who you really want to be? What part of your personality are you hiding? And why? For those of us who are gay or lesbian, “pretending” to be someone else starts at a very

early age. We learn from family, friends, and most of all, the media, that being “different” isn’t okay. Once we’re immersed in our careers, we’re told that sexuality isn’t supposed to be something anyone sees or even knows about as part of our work life. The irony is that whether we’re aware of it or not, and whether we’re “out” or not, all of our relationships from family to friends to co-workers are touched in some way by the gift of being gay or lesbian. By “gift,” I’m asking “What do you bring to the Halloween party called life?” What personality

aspect of your favorite costume could bring delight and energy to the others we share our days with? What would your personality be like if you could choose to have any personality out there? Ask yourself that question and then remember we choose our costume every single day. Remember the lyric from “I Am What I Am?” Gloria Gaynor sings “It takes a lifetime to become the best that we can be. We do not have the time nor the right to judge each other. It’s one life and there’s no return and no deposit, so make sure you like what’s in your closet.” |  |

Equality— Italian Style

Gina Duncan GINA@MBAORLANDO.ORG

S

IX MONTHS AGO, STUART

Milk invited me to speak at a Cross Atlantic Global Summit (CAGS) on diversity and economic prosperity sponsored by the Harvey Milk Foundation.

The foundation, named after Stuart’s iconic Uncle, works to foster equality around the world, and particularly in areas where LGBT youth are at risk. As president of the Metropolitan Business Association, Orlando’s LGBT Chamber of Commerce, I readily accepted. But as the Oct. 4 date approached, I learned that the event was much more than I irst believed. First, it would be held in Milan, Italy. Second, there would be representatives from all over the world attending and speaking. And inally, this was a big deal for Italy, covered by multiple media outlets and with far-reaching political ramiications. A few days before the conference, Stuart casually dropped that 500 to 1,000 people would attend. Because of all the nations and languages represented, most would wear headphones and many would have interpreters. Think the U.N. General Assembly and you have an idea.

Stuart is a master of understatement, but the picture slowly downloaded for me. I was honored to be invited to this extraordinary event. CAGS was presented by “ALL, Everybody and Together,” an Italian civil rights group conceived by Equality Italia Milano and Rosaria Iardino, a Milan politician and civil rights expert. In addition to representing The Harvey Milk Foundation, Stuart also appeared as “oficial Surrogate for President Obama.” CAGS co-sponsors included the Senate of the Republic of Deputies, Chamber of Deputies, the US Consulate General in Milan, the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Universita’ Commerciale L. Bocconi and the Italian National Ofice Against Racial Discriminations. The event was promoted in Italy, somewhat loftily, as “a new approach to the promotion and safeguarding of human rights through inclusion of differences and diversities in the pursuit of economic prosperity. “ I arrived in beautiful Milan the day before the Summit, and was promptly whisked to my hotel by a gorgeous Italian man who spoke not a word of English. Before I had unpacked, I was informed that Stuart wanted me to accompany him to a pre-summit meeting of equality advocacy groups operating in Italy. Not surprisingly, there had been in-ighting over strategies to best facilitate progress. I speculated that a few egos might be involved as well. The meeting was to ensure support for the Summit from all of the organizations represented. Knowing his knack for understatement, I was concerned when Stuart told me the meeting could be “contentious.” It turned out to be the highlight of my trip. As the meeting progressed, I recognized similarities with some of the ways we have grown and matured as a community in Orlando. Drawn into the discussion, I told them about the “Equality Through Economics” model that has worked so well here. I outlined how our many LGBT groups came together to form the Orlando AntiDiscrimination Ordinance Alliance (OADO), and how each organization assumed a different role in the push for equality. I described the strong inancial demographics of our local LGBT community, and how our outreach to major companies led to the formation and growth of Employee Resource Groups within them. I shared how we made these

companies aware of the HRC Corporate Equality Index, and noted their positive reaction as their own employees became involved in local equality initiatives. Some of these companies created more open and welcoming social environments where their employees could foster social and creative connections. I explained that many companies have now formed productive partnerships with local LGBT organizations. In turn, these partnerships inluence elected oficials as we push social equality measures through city and county government. I expressed my belief that social

equality has now become a standard business model among major corporations in Central Florida. As a result, it’s become easier to convince elected oficials to act accordingly. In Orlando, a foundation of economic development has led to social change, and the local LGBT community is making real progress toward equality. The Italian activists listened attentively and expressed admiration for the lessons we have learned and the progress we have made. At the end of the meeting, Rosaria hugged me and said, “Gina, you may have made a difference in Italy today.” |  |

With everyone’s minds on the approaching November 2012 presidential race, we all need a reason to laugh (in case we’ll be crying later). Winnie, Rachel, Trampolina and Trixie will perform at the Tampa Theatre on Thursday,

Oct. 25, in Electile Dysfunction: The Kinsey Sicks for President. The show is much anticipated,

especially since their original performance in late August had to be cancelled because of road closures related to the Republican National Convention in Tampa. Of course, the dragapella foursome has a CD to go along with the show, for sale in the lobby following the performance. “Peoria” (to the tune of “Gloria”), “T’aint It Love?” (to the tune of “Tainted Love”), “Yahweh” (to the tune of “My Way”), “Toucha Touch Me (TSA Security)” (to the tune of “Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me”), “Love Child: Politician

She did, after all, get her start as a drag queen in a Colorado gay nightclub and as the frontwoman to an all-gay male band. Since then, her campy Elvira: Mistress of the Dark brought her television shows, special appearances, impersonations by drag performers and, most recently, a stint as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. girl. Weird, right? I was a go-go dancer for several clubs and I used to go to this one club called Purple Cow. I didn’t even know what gay clubs were back then. So, when I saw these men dressing up as women, I thought “Oh, how cool!” Eventually, they gave me a job dancing there one night a week—I guess so they could get straight guys in there, too. One night, a “girl” didn’t show up for the drag show and they asked me if I would play her part as part of The Supremes. Strangely enough, I could it in her costumes because she was so skinny. Not only was I in drag but I was in black-face and we were singing under a black light so all you could see was the whites of our eyes and the white gloves as we lip-sang.

I’m working on a TV show that I can’t talk about. [Laughs] I hate that I’m not allowed to talk about it; those darn conidentiality contracts. I’ll just say, by this Halloween, I will have a new show on television. Besides that, I’m doing a couple of guest appearances on reality shows this fall. I just inished Elvira’s Horror Hunt with Peaches Christ. For ElvirasHorrorHunt.com, she and I did this independent ilm fest contest then screened the winning movies live. It was very Siskel and Ebert.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE CLASSIC/BAD HORROR MOVIES?

My favorite good bad movie is Planet 9 From Outer Space. You don’t get any worse than that. There is a new one that’s pretty freaking awesome called Birdemic. My God—you have to look it up! It’s as if Ed Wood came back to life. It’s obviously by someone who thinks they’re making a seriously good movie but…they’re not. I’ve been going to so many gay weddings lately. Every state I go to, it’s a completely different format; some can have weddings, some can only have commitment ceremonies. HOW MANY KINSEYS HAVE BEEN IN THE GROUP SINCE IT WAS FORMED IN 1993?

We have very low turnover in the Kinsey Sicks, except in bed. We have to turn over Trampolina every couple hours because of her snoring. We’re on the road maybe 100 or 120 days a year. It is indeed quite grueling, although we have it down to a science. Makeup, costumes, wigs, sound equipment, merchandise, all folded just so and packed just right in our Mary Poppins carpet bags. We have many good systems to make it easier. And frankly, doing so many shows is a great joy. No one’s complaining. AS WAS THE CASE WITH THE PREVIOUS KINSEY SICKS DISCS, ELECTILE DYSFUNCTION HAS A CLEVER TITLE. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS OF COMING UP WITH TITLES FOR THE ALBUMS?

We have a process we call “brainstorming” in which someone comes up with an idea and everyone else instantly and heartlessly shoots it down. Finally we run out of time and pick the irst thing that comes to mind. ALSO LIKE OTHER KINSEY SICKS DISCS, ELECTILE DYSFUNCTION MAKES GOOD USE OF PARODY LYRICS IN SEVERAL SONGS.

Ben Schatz is our primary parody maven. His parodies are so successful because he’s so demanding of himself in the process. He won’t settle for anything that doesn’t parallel the original as closely as possible. It must have the same rhyme scheme, including internal rhymes. In fact, the parodies that we think are the best are the ones that are so close to

the original—but with a huge change in meaning—that people are stunned that they never thought of it themselves. Also, as a rule, we prefer to deliver the raunchiest or darkest material using the prettiest or most innocent songs. True, it does ruin those songs for people forever, but we are not overburdened by remorse that none of our fans can hear “Edelweiss” anymore without cringing.

THE KINSEY SICKS HAVE BEEN SINGING A CAPPELLA LONG BEFORE THAT STYLE OF MUSIC CAUGHT ON WITH MAINSTREAM AUDIENCES VIA TV SHOWS SUCH AS GLEE AND THE SING OFF. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE SUDDEN FASCINATION WITH A CAPPELLA SINGING?

Yeah, a cappella is a big deal now thanks to reality TV. So is drag, thanks to reality TV. So why the fuck aren’t we famous? WHY DO YOU THINK THAT A MAJORITY OF REPUBLICANS ARE SO OBSESSED WITH THE LGBT COMMUNITY?

Are they? I hadn’t noticed. Although when we were in Tampa during the Republican National Convention, Grindr was looking awfully busy. WHAT CAN PEOPLE LOOK FORWARD TO AT THE SHOW?

Not refunds, that’s for sure. For those who haven’t seen the Kinsey Sicks before, you’re in for a roller coaster ride of quick wit, sharp political humor, scary audience participation, glorious four-part harmonies and endearing if eccentric characters. In this particular show, the Kinsey Sicks are running for president on the Republican ticket (if corporations are people, there’s no reason they can’t run for ofice). We get to share our economic platform (“Sell the Poor”), discuss our plan for education (“Eliminate the Schools,” to the melody of “Three Little Maids from School”) and tout the most important reason for choosing us (“Vote for Me: I Wasn’t Born in Kenya”). It’s a terriic show, if I do say so myself. |  |

OVERHEARD PRESIDENTIAL VISIT

W

HILE WATERMARK WAS GOING TO PRESS FOR THIS WEEK’S ISSUE, THE WHITE HOUSE SENT AN EMAIL letting us know that President Barack Obama will be in Ybor City on Thursday, Oct. 25—the same day this issue hits the streets. The President is fresh off of a well-received, inal debate with GOP challenger Mitt Romney and is hoping to swing Florida back into the blue column by Nov. 6. Currently the president trails the former Massachusetts governor by three percentage points in the Sunshine State. In 2008 Florida was instrumental in Obama’s

election to the White House. Obama will appear at The State Museum and Gardens early on Thursday and tickets will more than likely be snapped up way before then.

INCE 1981, LGBTS OF TAMPA BAY HAVE CELEBRATED HALLOWEEN IN SPECTACULAR STYLE, and 2012 will be no different. The All Hallows Ball returns to the Tampa Convention Center on Oct. 27, and this year’s theme is “It’s A Small World.” The many ethnicities and nationalities to choose from will no-doubt

offer a plethora of entertaining, wild and very sexy costumes. We’re expecting a lot of loin cloths, some tight-itting lederhosen and more than just a few Roman guards. Facebook will be lit up like crazy come Sunday morning, okay, make that Sunday afternoon, with photos of the evening’s incrediblyc reative costumes. The invitation-only party continues to grow each year, and past guests have included county commissioners, city councilmen and well-known business owners. It’s deinitely come a long way from that irst year all those years ago.

PRIDE MIA?

W

HILE CELEBRATING SARASOTA PRIDE, TWO THINGS WERE NOTICED BY SEVERAL PASSERSBY in the vendor area—gay-owned nightclub Throb and representatives of St. Pete Pride were noticeably absent. According to Pride organizer Cindy Barnes, the last she had heard from Throb was an e-mail asking about what it took to be a vendor. The ball, in essence, was left in the club’s hands and there didn’t appear to be much followthrough. Currently, Throb is the only exclusively LGBT bar in Sarasota, and several Pride attendees were overheard

OCT. 25 - NOV. 7, 2012 // ISSUE 19.22

asking for directions to the club’s booth and searching for details about a non-existent Sarasota Pride-themed after party at the club. It’s unclear why Throb didn’t participate— ”You’re asking the wrong person,” Barnes said. But she is hopeful for its participation in the future. St. Pete Pride had a booth space ready to be occupied, but by the time the festival was in full swing, it still sat empty. Eventually the space was given to another vendor. It’s unclear as to why St. Pete Pride—an organization that’s typically a regular at neighboring pride events— was absent. |  |

triggered an out pour of love and tears from many in attendance. Members from a number of teams combined a total bid of $1,260 for the gentle giant, sparking even him to give a tearful speech. “Everyone that took part in the bid on Wes was to show him how much he means to everyone in the league,” said Devon Tillman, CFSL Social Committee Chair. “His hard work and dedication to them and the league does not go unnoticed.”While a portion of the money goes to the team being represented and part goes to the league, Tillman said Hodge called a meeting of the board members requesting to make a charitable donation with a portion of the money that was bid on him. |  |

Y BOYFRIEND, GEORGE, AND I HAVE BEEN TOGETHER ON AND OFF FOR TWO YEARS. We have an open relationship with the understanding that we tell each other everything if we fool around. About two months ago I discovered that I had crabs. When I confronted George, he said that I must’ve gotten them “off a toilet seat.” I know for a fact that I haven’t been intimate with anyone else this year and it’s doubtful I picked them up in a restroom. When I persisted, George admitted he’d been with two other guys (which he conveniently “forgot to mention”) but he was adamant that he never had crabs. Now, not only do I think he’s lying about giving me crabs but I’m left wondering what else he hasn’t told me. How do I resolve this? —Itchy in Indialantic Dear Itchy and Scratchy, Any faithful reader of the Truth will know my view on open relationships. While I’ve heard lots of people extoll the virtues of polyamorousness within a relationship, I’ve never actually seen an open relationship that works. The level of accommodation they require appears to be more than most relationships can handle, in my humble experience. I realize you didn’t ask me to riff on the viability of open relationships, but sorry, that’s the price of admission with the Truth. Crabs is not the sort of thing one would forget having. The fact that George neglected to live by the rules of your accommodation and ‘forgot’ to tell you about his dalliances doesn’t hold water. To be such a commonplace event that hooking up with someone is something that would slip his mind is indicative that he’s doing a whole lot more of that sort of activity than he’s admitting. For the record, I don’t think that’s the case: I just think he intentionally kept these events from you. Like you, it does make me wonder what else he’s keeping from you. If he did in fact infect you with some crawly critters, he

should fess up, but he hasn’t and it doesn’t sound like he’s going to. For the record, you can get crabs more than simply through a sexual scenario, but it is rare. Here comes the Truth: A true resolution— where these sorts of circumstances simply do not arise again—will only occur when you close your relationship. While there are other bees lying around the lower of your love, it is impossible to separate the wheat from the chaff, if you’ll pardon the mixed garden metaphor.

DEAR TRUTH,

I

’M A 30-SOMETHING SINGLE LESBIAN WHO HAS LIVED IN OSCEOLA COUNTY MY WHOLE LIFE. About a year ago I met Danita on a cruise and we hooked up. It was amazing! We decided to continue seeing each other—even though she lives in Atlanta—and we’ve spent quite a few passionate weekends together. Danita has told me she wants more and has suggested that we move in together. The problem is that I’m not in love with her because she’s totally selfabsorbed. Even her friends in Atlanta have commented that Danita thinks the “world revolves around her” and how much patience I must have to be with her. I don’t mind it when we’re together for only a few days—it’s actually kind of cute and the sex is awesome—but there’s no way I want to navigate that mineield on a daily basis. What should I do? —Why Ruin a Good Thing

If he did in fact infect you with some crawly critters, he should fess up.

OCT. 25 - NOV. 7, 2012 // ISSUE 19.22

Dear Ruinator, Is it a good thing, or just an okay thing? It’s a pretty simple question, really. You don’t seem to care for her as much more than a fun, occasional distraction. The problem as you describe it is Danita’s, not yours, because she has developed feelings for someone who does not reciprocate them. While it might mean losing your extracurricular fun with Danita, you are honor-bound to let her know her relative place in your life and heart, and let her down as easily as possible. |  |

Out Lynx star fights for marriage equality Wire Report

Jason Parsley

M

SOUTH FLORIDA GAY NEWS

K

irk Ruben of Wilton Manors traveled to Fort Worth, Tex., Oct. 19 -21 to compete in a speed event at the World Gay Rodeo inals. Ruben is the only Florida cowboy who qualiied to participate in a speed event this year. Ruben only found out he qualiied to make the inals in late September and struggled in October to raise the money to fund the trip. “I’m really excited that I am the only guy that qualiied in any of the speed events. But that also means I’m the only one to haul my horse to Fort Worth, Texas,” he said. After ive years of competing in the rodeos he noted, “This is my best rodeo year I’ve had so far. I’m in heaven. It’s been a great. I haven’t been this excited over something in a long time.”

LAST COWBOY: Wilton Manors cowboy Kirk Ruben was the only Florida cowboy to qualify for a speed event in the World Gay Rodeo Finals. He set up a page on Fundrazr.com to help him raise the cash needed. He was also seen several weekends at Rosie’s Bar and Grill in Fort Lauderdale, where he worked as a shot boy to raise some extra money. In all, his trip to Texas cost him $4,000.

Earlier this year Ruben competed in the Sunshine Stampede hosted by the Florida Gay Rodeo Association where he placed irst in barrel racing. The World Gay Rodeo Finals is hosted by the International Gay Rodeo Association. |  |

inneapolis, Minn. | Seimone Augustus has always preferred to stay out of the public eye, even as her basketball career has taken her to the heights of an Olympic gold medal and a WNBA championship. With her adopted home state of Minnesota considering a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, the Lynx star is now becoming a vocal proponent of equal rights for gays and lesbians. After Augustus proposed to girlfriend LaTaya Varner on Miami Beach, she started feeling comfortable with the idea of taking things public. Regardless of what happens with the November vote, an oficial marriage in Minnesota almost certainly won’t happen. State law already makes marriage equality illegal. Varner said she expects marriage equality will eventually be legal in the state, and a “No” vote victory in November would be a sign that times are changing. The Lynx front ofice have fully supported Augustus’ efforts. |  |
