e are in the eye of the big gay storm know as June here at Watermark Media.

It’s fitting that June is the start of the hurricane season and the busiest gay month of the year. No time is wasted either. As soon as June hits our calendars, we are hunkering down for a week long wave of fabulous festivities. After a short hiatus we are back in the thick of it with pride celebrations. Gay Days packs the first punch. Watermark covered over 30 events with less than ten staff members, freelancers and interns from June 2 to June 7. Log on to WatermarkOnline.com to see all the photo galleries of those events. You will also find some of those pictures in this issues Orlando News section, as well as Gallery W. Although a whirlwind, Gay

Days is a frenzy of fun and this year did not disappoint. I had the pleasure of staying at the Double Tree for the first time. What a smart move! I recommend anyone enjoying the weekend stay at one of the host hotels next year. You will have easy access to all the parties as well as a place to make a quick costume change if you need refreshing. Keeping with tradition, I attended the coveted Riptide party at Typhoon Lagoon. To add a little extra fun I took my straight brother with me; this being his first big gay event outside Gay Day at the Magic Kingdom. My favorite quote from him was, “I really need to work out!” A phrase he repeated every 30 minutes.

We have the five day schedule of events, an in depth look at your Grand Marshals, hints on parade and festival survival and look at entertainer Alex Newell. I hope you enjoy the issue and the weekend. This is St. Pete’s turn to shine. When this June storm passes, you will not see my mug attached to this column. Starting with the next issue you will be introduced to our new editor-in-chief, Billy Manes. For three issues I have had the pleasure of filling this space and I thank you for taking the time to read it. Although I will not occupy this space, I will return to writing my regular column, Words to Live By. For the mean time though, bye Felicia!

With the publication of this issue, we enter the eye of the storm. For a few days we can relax and regroup before revving up for the next wave of celebrations at St. Pete Pride. If you haven’t been to St. Pete Pride, wake up! It is unique experience. Being based in Orlando I love making the trip to St. Pete. I work the entire time, but I get to have fun so it is still like a vacation. As a battle cry, I tend to yell out in the office “Tampa Bay trip!” as I head to my car for pride. It’s akin to Joey Tribbiani and his “London baby!” chant. My favorite memories of St. Pete Pride definitely center around the parade set up. I’m usually not a fan of huge crowds, but this is different. There are so many gay and gay friendly people in large groups within a huge parking lot, and with an enormous amount of spectators anxiously waiting to celebrate equality. It’s an inspiring time. I’m also a fan of how the masses handle the protesters. Although dwindling in numbers, protesters tend to make it out to the parade at St. Pete Pride. Instead of anger, parade attendees simply display pride in themselves and each other. It’s difficult to meet hate with grace, especially when there so many people around. Perhaps the most exciting of the St. Pete Pride parades came last year with the inauguration of the nighttime parade. It was the first time I attended a nighttime parade and I found myself wondering why all parades don’t take place after sunset. The spectacle of lights is beautiful. Now that everyone has had

a year to experiment with the change, I’m looking forward to see what some organizations come up with this time. The Watermark contingent typically stays at the Hampton Inn St. Petersburg for the weekend. The management and staff are very welcoming to its guests. Every year they throw a Saturday pool party and this year Watermark is providing DJ VJ Nick to help spice up the day. You have to be a guest to attend so book a room now. This issue of Watermark is supersized with everything you need to know about St. Pete Pride.

COWP wants to be UNITED for Pride Jeremy Williams

O

rlando | Come Out With Pride has set the stage for 2015 to be the biggest, most successful Pride event ever when it takes to streets of Orlando October 8-10. The theme, Pride United, is a call to unite the community after last year’s controversy over the Metropolitan Business Association—COWP’s parent organization—removing Mikael Audebert, the former executive director. “We want everyone to know Pride is ok,” said Matt Riha, COWP director of marketing and communications. “we are great and excited about this year’s events and positive that what we hoped for this year will happen.” The change in leadership at COWP has led to many changes coming for the parade and events as well. “We have listened to feedback,” Brian Smith, COWP president, said. “In previous years we have had so many competing Pride events so we have cut the celebration down from a week to three days.” The three day celebration will start with the launch party at Hamburger Mary’s and conclude with a parade and festival around Lake Eola. Other changes coming for COWP 2015 will be a reorganized layout for the festival at Lake Eola. “We will also have awards for the best floats in the parade, as well as the Pride Marketplace which will feature our venders and designated sponsor and community partners areas,” Smith said. “You will also see the return of Dinner & Fireworks, but expanded to include more tables.” The big change this year is the way COWP is funded. In the past, it has been the beverage sales that have paid for the events, but this year COWP wants to do things a little different. “We are introducing ‘Make it a Double’,” Riha said. “It’s a way to get the community involved in COWP so that the proceeds made from the day of the event can go back to the community.” “Make it a Double” is a group of fundraising events put on by COWP leading up to the main event at Lake Eola. “We will be doing a bar crawl the last weekend of July,” Riha said. “We will also have a GAYrage sale, a GLOW party, an event at DRIP, all these events are a part of ‘Make it a Double’ so we can reach our goal of funding Pride before it happens and at the end we will have a big reception for the teams to see if we made our goal.” COWP will be getting the word out leading up to Pride and the board members plan on attending all the events. “I don’t think Pride has had an entire board face in the past, so we’re all getting out there. We all are going to events so people know who we are and so they’ll have many faces to Pride,” Riha said. While they can’t say anything yet, COWP says they are working on some exciting prospects for grand marshals and are in the final stages of securing the entertainment. That information can be expected in late August. “We really feel that this is going to be our most successful year,” Smith said.

Magical Journey Gay Days engulfs Orlando as it celebrates 25 years wearing red Jeremy Williams

O

rlando | Gay Days 2015 brought thousands of travelers and locals to Orlando’s most well-known LGBT gathering, and one of the highest attended gay events in the world, with dozens of parties to suit every ones needs. The big winners this year were the promoters and venues for the parties. Gay Days, One Magical Weekend, Girls in Wonderland, Parliament House and Tidal Wave events were very well attended, some even showing record numbers. While the sea of red shirts seemed thinner than most years at the Magic Kingdom, Disney attendance didn’t seem to be down as the parks were packed and the lines were long. This could be cause red is so last season or it could be an indication that people just aren’t bothered by a theme park full of LGBT families and are attending the parks regardless of it being Gay Day or not.

The crowds at each park this year appeared more blended with all ages, races, genders and sexual orientations cohabitating at the happiest place on Earth. Even the infamous plane, warning families that Magic Kingdom and the city of Orland were run amuck with homosexuals for Gay Days was absent this year.

Gay Days

Gay Days kicked off the week long party at the Artegon Marketplace June 2. The kickoff party launched the week full of events for what was the 25th anniversary of the original Gay Day. The crowd was entertained by the event’s emcees, jeweler to the stars Nova Starr and Gay Days Creative Director of Entertainment Steve Erics. There was food, drinks and some of the hardest bodies seen all week painted up in Gay Day celebration! Proceeds from the kickoff party benefited the Hope & Help Center.

The Gay Days Orlando Expo, located in DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando at SeaWorld, kicked off June 4 with samples of the goods and services specifically targeting our community. With over 20,000 attendees, Gay Days’ Orlando Expo is one of the largest gay and lesbian expos in the world. The Gay Days host hotel also had a spiced up 18 and over vendor room that let you stock up on after party supplies, as well as the epic pool parties. As in previous years, the parties were divided among three pools; the main pool, the bear pool and, for the first time, the Latin pool. The parties kicked it into high gear until 3 a.m. every night, then shut down for just a few hours to let everyone get rest before the bass started shaking the walls at 10 a.m. This went from Wednesday, June 3 through Sunday, June 7. Sleep? At Gay Days? You can sleep at work on Monday. A Taste of Gay Days kept the party goers at DoubleTree well fed with food from all over the Orlando area. Along with the eats, the guests got adult treats with wine, beer and alcohol in heavy supply. As if that wasn’t enough, the crowd also were witness to an amazing aerial show and music by DJ Nancy Starr. Ms. Imani Valentino was Continued on pg. 10 | uu |

The night’s festivities were hosted by the always entertaining Chi ChiLaRue and CoCoMontresse. While Gay Days was built 25 years ago around the Magic Kingdom, and later the parties and expo at the host hotel, several others have expanded the day into a week of epic parties throughout Orlando and the Disney area.

One Magical Weekend

One Magical Weekend had some of the most explosive and well attended events this year. Taking on the B Resort as their host hotel for the first time, One Magical Weekend competed for the attention and dollars of the Gay Day attendees with their own pool parties and expo. While the B Resort worked through some growing pains having larger than expected crowds, it was One Magical Weekend’s Friday night party, RipTide, which had everyone’s attention. RipTide brought the party again this year at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon June 5. The weekend’s longest running party was everything you thought it would be. Water slides, pools and the biggest dance party being DJ’d by Phil B and Joe Gauthreaux. Thousands packed into all 52-acres with scantily clad, hard bodies and skimpy bathing suits leaving the Disney waterpark looking like gay heaven. Whether they were fighting the rapids of the wave pool, drifting along in the lazy river or knocking a few back at one of the 42 bars they had set up, everyone was visibly having the time of their life. One Magical Weekend brought the red shirts that inhabited the Magic Kingdom earlier in the day and the sexy bodies from the night before at Typhoon Lagoon to Epcot June 6 with Red Version 1: Unmasked. The next level circuit party was kept moving by DJ Paulo and let the guys dance away until 2 a.m. One Magical Weekend had one last circuit party at Epcot before closing out Gay Days 2015 June 7.

Drink Around the World had party goers roaming country to country in search of Epcot’s finest watering holes. At 5 P.M., the private tea dance began with DJ Grind spinning the tunes. The night closed out with a spectacular fireworks display, IllumiNations, courtesy of Epcot.

Girls in Wonderland

The ladies were not left unrepresented as Girls in Wonderland celebrated their 15th year with Gay Days. Phish Phest and Girls in Wonderland took over downtown Orlando June 4 with Traffic Jam. The event allowed the ladies to match up based on availability via glow necklaces. Red equals stop, yellow is caution and green means let’s go! The crowd was entertained by Spikey Dikey. Girls in Wonderland celebrated with one of the most anticipated Gay Days events, Climax at the Hard Rock Live June 5. The girls danced the night away and spent the evening with Orlando superstars Baby Blue Star and

Ivy Les Vixen. Girls in Wonderland believe in partying with a purpose too so a portion of the events proceeds benefited the National Center for Lesbian Rights. The Girls in Wonderland celebrated 15 years of parties and philanthropy with a huge gathering at the House of Blues June 6. The largest and most popular women’s event of the weekend featured music by DJ Whiney Day and DJ Pat Pat and shows by Baby Blue, Ivy Les Vixen and Vikkerious Vixen.

Parliament House

Parliament House had their official kick off to the Gay Days 2015 celebration with PI@PH June 4. More than 3,000 people packed the famous Orlando gay landmark, which is also celebrating its 40th year. The party was everywhere with outdoor and indoor dance floors, a Latin Diva Revue and midnight countdown. Parliament House did not slow down as they went into the weekend, throwing it back old

school with concerts from some of the biggest musical acts of the 80s. The concerts kicked off June 5 with Color Me Badd wanting to sex up the audienace. The crowds also got the footlight player, hot adult film stars and music by Dj Scott Robert and Dj Brianna. Wilson Phillips was the Saturday concert and had the crowd going insane June 6. Parliament House offered up entertainment from the Footlight Players with special guest TP Lords, as well as the Fringe Festivel hit show “Bubble Gum Party,” before the platnium selling girl group, Wilson Phillips took the stage. “Love who you wanna love, and f--k who you wanna f--k,” Carnie Wilson said before the group performed not only their own hits but number one songs from the Mamas & the Papas and ABBA. Wilson Phillips held on for one more song, singing the huge hit which had a revival a few years back after being featured in the movie Bridesmaids. The bears were out in force for Gay Days as the host hotel for Tidal Wave, the Holiday Inn Orlando LBV, had the woods set for feeding. Singles mixers, cigar socials and pool parties had the Holiday Inn happier than the Country Bear Jamboree. The Tidal Wave main event was at the Wet ‘N’ Wild waterpark where the bears scurried through the wave pool, lazy river and jammed out to the music of DJ Brayden Marc while enjoying some bear soup. A big event for the weekend was the Tidal Wave Wedding at the Lake Buena Vista Holiday Inn June 6. It proved to be a tear jerker as six couples pledged their love in the midst of Gay Days. Officiating the wedding was Rev. Bryan Allen Demeritte, with Watermark’s Founder Tom Dyer appearing to say a few special words to the happy couples.

Something for everyone

Many other venues and promoters had Gay Days events going on throughout the City Beautiful. WE Party, for the first year without One Magical Weekend, brought Frat House to Venue 578, formerly the legendary Firestone nightclub. The fraternity party was everything a college kid pledging would expect. DJ Brett Henrichsen and DJ Danny Verde had the music blasting as the “brothers” danced all night to a packed house, toned bodies wearing next to nothing getting everyone’s pulse racing. All the local bars got in on the action; Southern Nights had the Days of Gays on Friday and Saturday, Pulse had a special gay Days night of Platinum Friday and Club Mixx had the ladies going for a Night of Lust. Gay Days also saw the soft opening of an Orlando gay-scene institution as the Full Moon Saloon at Woodstock opened there doors after being shuttered eight years ago.

s

tephen Graumlich, introducing The Rev. Elder Dr. Nancy L. Wilson, World Moderator of the Metropolitan Community Churches, to a full house at the 4TH Annual Pride Celebration at The Cathedral Church of St. Peter’s paused a moment. He reflected upon one sentence she shared with him 30 years ago, “We have to learn to fish out of the other side of the boat.” At the time Graumlich was struggling to find a place where, as a gay man, he could reclaim his spiritual roots. And Wilson was a minister in a fledgling MCC church. Graumlich finally found his home in an inclusive Episcopalian church. Wilson now heads a church with 300 congregations in 37 countries. Her message of inclusion remains the same. Meeting briefly before her talk, I couldn’t help but query, “How does it feel to be the keynote speaker in a place, which many believe is the bastion of tradition?” Her response was quick. “We at MCC, wanted to build a faith-based community a little quicker. Yet Episcopalians in this country have always been in the forefront of social justice issues.” It may have taken a little longer, but today both churches bless same-sex marriages. That Wilson spoke at St. Peter’s on the eve of an important Supreme Court decision related to same-sex marriages is in itself historic. In the second year of its existence MCC founder Troy Perry sued the state of California in 1970 for the right to marry his partner. He lost that case; but began what has become a worldwide debate. Within days of same-sex marriages becoming legal in Florida this year, The Cathedral blessed its first same-sex couples in marriage. Wilson, as World Moderator, travels a lot. She talked about a young gay man in Romania who had been told to burn himself by his priest, asking tearfully “Is there a God who can truly love me?” She shared the story of the Blessed Minority Church in Hong Kong, which fought for its existence—and won—in the Chinese courts. MCC, the United Church of Christ and the Canadian Anglican Church run a Rainbow Railroad for those who flee for their lives from countries such as Uganda, Jamaica, Egypt and Iraq where being gay is punishable by death. They are re-settled in Canada in order to continue working for justice in their home countries. Asked about the perceived decline of interest in organized religion, Wilson said someone stating they are ‘spiritual’ is simply a code for ‘I’m alienated’. People belong only to communities they can trust. Inclusion is central to trust. “We are where are today because people came out. Coming out is about healing. We now have to become the moral agents who stand at the intersection of faith and civil rights. The debate isn’t about LGBTQ people versus the church; but whether we, as LGBTQ people are seen bringing justice and hope into the moral arc of the universe.”

The facility will offer primary care, HIV specialty care, pharmacy, counseling, benefits services, medical case management, HIV and STD testing, therapeutic and support groups, and prevention and wellness education. William Harper, ASAP executive director, said his primary vision is

to provide a comprehensive and compassionate place where clients can feel at home for whatever their needs may be. “I just really want people to feel that when they come here, they are cared for,” Harper said. “I want to feel like what we’ve done for them is embrace them and brought them home.” Sciullo said Home 3050 will include specific outreach for the LGBT community. He said the timing of the project is perfect in addressing LGBT needs because of increased benefits resulting from marriage equality. “We want to be part of a healthcare continuum that accepts the LGBT community and embraces them,” Sciullo said. “We have a number of focus groups already, so we will continue to have those and to provide that sense of home that’s so important to them.” Although the project’s undertaking began a year ago, the idea has been in the works for years. Harper felt ASAP could offer medical services as a way to expand and improve services to clients. He began looking at potential partnerships with community organizations that fit ASAP’s mission and were comfortable with the work

ASAP does with its clients. Harper said he felt especially comfortable with Bay Care, Pinellas Care Clinic’s parent organization, and that many of ASAP’s clients were already being seen at Pinellas Care Clinic. Jimmy Baumgartner, Bay Care director of research, said he and Harper have been working together for over 20 years. “William and I have such a long history together,” Baumgartner said. Our two organizations have clinical and psychosocial experience, so the union is quite powerful.” ASAP’s pharmacy received approval as a 340B program which requires drug manufacturers to provide outpatient drugs at reduced prices. Harper said the pharmacy was the backbone of the ASAP and Pinellas Care Clinic integration. “Empath Health and Bay Care have a working relationship in the community.” Harper said. “Our partnership can provide a continuum of care for an entire lifetime.” The project encompasses two adjacent buildings. Currently, construction is taking place at Empath Health’s Community Service Center, the smaller of the two buildings. ASAP sits at the larger building but will be relocating to the bottom east side of the smaller building which will house its office and social services program. Once ASAP moves, construction will begin on the larger building and will become Home 3050. “I’m excited that clients can take continued on pg. 14 | uu |

in other neWs pride night at tropicana fieLd sets attendance record Pride Night was held on Friday, June 12 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg as the Tampa Bay Rays played the Chicago White Sox and set a new attendance record for the event with over 700 tickets sold, three times the number that the event has attracted in the past. Everyone attending received a free tote bag and saw the Rays win the game against the White Sox with a score of 7-5.

una voce’s I AM HARVEY MILK revieW Una Voce’s evening of choral music Friday, June 12 at St. Petersburg’s Palladium, then reprised at Tampa’s new USF Concert Hall June 13, was brilliantly conceived and executed. The main event was the Florida premiere of Andrew Lippa’s I Am Harvey Milk. Each of the 12 songs performed deserve its own review, but the emotional heart of the show is “I Am San Francisco.”

We didn’t have to go to the board and fuss to please give us a chance.” The community has had a large hand in bringing Home 3050 to fruition. Harper said every penny of funding has been raised within the

Home 3050 has received $420,000 in funding and is only $80,000 away from the final goal. “I can’t tell you how humbled and thankful I am to have this kind of support from our community,” Harper said. “It’s beyond what I can

gov. rick scott signs bill removing gay adoption ban Jeremy Williams

t

aLLahassee | Gov. Rick Scott signed the Adoption and Foster Care bill (HB7013) into law June 11 effectively removing the language that bans gays from adopting in the state of Florida. This was a smaller part of a larger adoption bill that will provide incentive payments to community-based care groups. The bill caused friction in the State House earlier this year leading Rep. Jason Brodeur (Sanford-R) to introduce a bill that would allow adoption agencies to deny same-sex couples from adopting based on religious or moral convictions. The anti-gay adoption bill made it through the House but died in Senate committee. The law officially ends the restriction on same-sex adoption that was started in 1977 after the anti-gay “Save Our Children” campaign by Anita Bryant. A circuit appeals court upheld the ban in 2004, but a state appeals court struck it down in 2010 and gay people in Florida have been successfully adopting since then.

atlantic beach commissioner airs anti-gay comments on Facebook Staff Report

a

tLantic beach | Atlantic Beach Commissioner Jonathan Daugherty sent a hate-filled remark to a fellow council member advising her that he was unfriending her on Facebook because of her support of an LGBT organization.. The message was sent to Maria Mark’s private inbox and explained Daugherty’s distain for her strategy in passing the local Human Rights Ordinance. Mark announced her re-election bid on June 14 but has posted several updates on Facebook prior to that date showing Equality Florida’s support for her re-election. Mark told The Florida Times-Union that she thought about responding. Instead, she shared it on Facebook with the message: “Comments?” Daugherty’s private message

read: “I just wanted to let you know I am going to defriend you on Facebook during the election not because I don’t like you as a person but because it makes me sick to my stomach and makes my blood boil every time I see an LGBT event or endorsement in my newsfeed. I think you will find an increasingly large backlash to what you have done and you will lose by a very large margin. Remember even though they may write a check and pat you on the back most don’t live here and they can’t vote. The people that you have pissed off though can and will and that is a majority of the people I talk to. I will pray for your soul.” Daugherty does not plan to support Mark or her opponent, John Stinson, in the upcoming election. Daugherty has two years before his term expires, after which he cannot run again because of term limits. “I am a firm believer in what a

marriage is right now,” Daugherty said. “What is disappointing to me is that when you disagree with someone in the community, it is automatically assumed it is hate, it is prejudice.” Mark has been recognized by several equality organizations for her passionate support in gaining awareness for LGBT issues. Mark said Atlantic Beach made history when it passed the HRO in August 2013, following the city of Jacksonville’s failed attempt. She said she posted the fellow commissioner’s comments to show how close-minded some elected officials can be. “It is insulting because he is saying he is on a higher pedestal, and I am this slimy creature that needs to be saved,” Mark said. Mark asked her friends on Facebook to put the issue behind them, “to let it be and move on.” “I am not running for re-election to create division, but am running to bring UNITY in our commUNITY!” she stated. “There is no place for negativity, let’s work on resolving the real issues.”

in other news Mexico rules states’ same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled it is unconstitutional for Mexican states to bar same-sex marriages. But the court’s ruling is considered a “jurisprudential thesis” and does not invalidate any state laws, meaning gay couples denied the right to wed would have to turn to the courts individually. Given the ruling, judges and courts would have to approve same-sex marriages. The high court ruled that any state law which considers the ultimate purpose of marriage to be “procreation, and or defines (marriage) as celebrated between a man and a woman, is unconstitutional.”Gay marriage is legal in some parts of Mexico, including Mexico City and the northern state of Coahuila.

German Parliament’s upper house pushes for gay marriage The German Parliament’s upper house is calling on the government to embrace full-fledged marriage for gay couples, an attempt to step up pressure on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party. The upper house represents Germany’s 16 state governments and has a left-wing majority — unlike the lower house. The resolution approved June 12 doesn’t force the government to take any action, as the state governments stopped short of sending a draft law to the lower house for a possible vote. Same-sex couples in Germany have been able to enter civil unions that fall short of marriage since a center-left government introduced them in 2001.

Chicago health officials work with LGBT groups to fight outbreak CHICAGO (AP) – An outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease has spread from Chicago to its suburbs. The Chicago Department of Public Health says there have been five cases, including one in DuPage County. One of the patients has died. Health officials say the severe bacterial infection has spread in Chicago among men who have sex with men. They are working with LGBT groups to stop the spread of the disease, which can cause meningitis and can be deadly. They are recommending vaccination to men in Chicago who have anonymous sex partners, who use hook-up apps to meet partners or who are HIV positive.

Utah man attacked, hate speech carved into his arm Authorities are investigating the repeated harassment of a rural Utah man who they said was beaten and had a threatening homophobic slur carved into his arm. Rick Jones was attacked inside his family’s pizza business in April and found unconscious, Millard County Sheriff Robert Dekker said. Jones suffered head and facial bruising, a concussion and the cuts in his arm. Five days later, the family’s home was spray-painted with a homophobic slur. On Wednesday, a rock and a molotov cocktail were thrown through the window of the home. That same day, the business was spray-painted, broken into and robbed of $1,000. Jones tells KSL-TV he believes he was targeted because he is gay.

Over 100,000 party at Tel Aviv Gay Pride Parade, the biggest of its kind in the region Wire Report

J

ERUSALEM | Thousands of barechested muscular men, drag queens in heavy makeup and high heels, women in colorful balloon costumes and others partied at Tel Aviv’s annual gay pride parade on June 12, the largest event of its kind in the region. Well over 100,000 people were participating in the parade, police said, while Israeli media put the number at 180,000. The event also drew thousands of people from around the world. Large sections of Tel Aviv were shut for traffic and loud music blasted along the parade’s route. Streets were packed thick with people waving rainbow flags and dancing. The theme of this year’s parade, which was the city’s biggest ever, was “Tel Aviv loves all genders.” Among the visitors was Conchita

Wurst, the bearded Austrian cross-dresser who won last year’s Eurovision song contest. “There are just beautiful people here,” Wurst told Israel’s Channel 2 TV. Rafael Anibal from Madrid said it was an “amazing party.” “I have been to many gay pride parades around the world and this is one of the best,” he added. A man dressed in a big white bow tie and sleeveless vest, who gave his name as Matteo Zakari, visited from Poland. He said “the people are amazing, the weather is amazing, I love Tel Aviv. The music is some of the best in the world.” Israel has emerged as one of the world’s most gay-friendly travel destinations in recent years, in sharp contrast to the rest of the Middle East where gay culture is not tolerated and gays are persecuted and even killed. Across the rest of the Mideast,

gay and lesbian relationships are mostly taboo. The pervasiveness of religion in everyday life, along with strict cultural norms, plays a major factor in that. Same-sex relations are punishable by death in Iran, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen. Gays serve openly in Israel’s military and parliament, and many popular artists and entertainers are gay. However, leaders of the gay community say Israel still has far to go in promoting equality. There is no gay marriage in Israel officially, primarily because there is no civil marriage of any kind. All Jewish weddings must be conducted through the Jewish rabbinate, which considers homosexuality a sin and a violation of Jewish law. But the state recognizes same-sex couples who marry abroad. Among most Palestinians, gays tend to be secretive about their social lives and some have crossed into Israel to live safely. In the West Bank, a 1951 Jordanian law banning homosexual acts remains in effect, as does a ban in Gaza passed by British authorities in 1936.

Head of New Jersey group sued over ‘gay conversion’ therapy testifies Wire Report JERSEY CITY, N.J. | The director of a nonprofit being sued for offering so-called gay conversion therapy acknowledged on the witness stand June 8 that the group claims a “success” rate of 65 to 75 percent to turn gay men to straight even though it doesn’t keep its own statistics and relies on anecdotal evidence from counselors. Arthur Goldberg also testified that he believes homosexuality is a spiritual disorder and a condition caused by emotional wounds occurring in childhood and adolescence that can be cured through a “gender-affirming” process such as that offered by his organization. Goldberg testified on the second day of a trial involving four young men who underwent the treatment and sued the group, Jersey City-based Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing, in 2012. They claim the group, known by the acronym JONAH, violated New Jersey consumer protection laws by making fraudulent claims and misrepresentations about what it

watermark Your lgbt life.

could do. They are seeking to have JONAH’s business license revoked and to be reimbursed for the therapy they paid for as well as separate counseling they underwent after leaving the program. On the stand, the 75-year-old Goldberg acknowledged that while in emails and writings on the group’s website JONAH claims that roughly two-thirds of men who go through the program are “successfully healed,” he relies on anecdotal evidence from counselors affiliated with JONAH to reach those numbers. “It’s an estimate,” he said under questioning from plaintiffs’ attorney Lina Bensman. Goldberg also acknowledged that the American Psychotherapy Association revoked two certifications it granted him because on his applications he failed to mention that he had been convicted of fraud and conspiracy years ago and spent time in prison. Pressed by Bensman, he also said he has never been a licensed counselor but has referred to himself as one in writings and emails and has had input on some of JONAH’s programs. Calling himself a mentor more than a counselor, Goldberg said

June 18 - July 1, 2015 // Issue 22.13

he has “spent hours and hours and hours talking to people who are suffering from unwanted homosexuality.” JONAH’s attorneys have argued that their client’s methods have been shown to be successful and that the plaintiffs didn’t complain or ask for their money back at the time they left the program but only did so after being contacted by activists seeking to shut JONAH down. One of the plaintiffs, Benjamin Unger, testified last week that one of JONAH’s methods involved using a tennis racket to beat a pillow that was meant to represent his mother, who, he said counselors told him, was responsible for his homosexuality. He also spoke of being urged to spend more time naked with his father. Republican Gov. Chris Christie signed a law in 2013 banning licensed therapists from practicing conversion therapy in New Jersey. Two court challenges to the ban, one by a couple and their son and one by a group that included two licensed therapists, were dismissed by a federal judge. Those decisions were later affirmed by a federal appeals court.

My View:

From A Broad Hallmark Cards Should Thank Me

I

love giving cards. I love

receiving cards. I can spend 45 minutes standing in the card aisle at Walgreens, Publix or Target and open, read and search for just the right card to send to someone. Yes, I could go home and design one. I’ve done that too, but there’s something about the hunting, the gathering. All that.

When you receive a card in the mail, I’ll bet it’s the first thing you open. Be honest. It is for me. Someone took a pen and wrote my address on it, they put a stamp on it, and they mailed it. It’s the human touch that still makes us happy or connected and alive. Sometimes I keep the card; sometimes it goes in the trash after I’ve read it, or gets displayed on my kitchen counter for a few days. Maybe it’s a girl thing. Mom taught my sister and me to always send a thank you card to the person who gave you a gift or invited you to something. At the time, it felt like a chore, but I am so grateful now for the lesson. (Should I send Mom a thank you card?) The first week of May is when I can spend about $50 bucks on cards. In just seven days my family celebrates my niece’s birthday, my dad’s birthday, my grandma’s birthday (now deceased), my folks’ wedding anniversary, my niece and her new husband’s wedding anniversary and finally Mother’s Day. Getting a “Thank You Email” will never, ever replace a card in the mail. Is it better than nuttin’? I dunno, I suppose. And those electronic-animated

cards are dull and take forever to finish. The payoff is rarely worth my time to sit there and watch a (insert animal) chase a (insert object) that turns into a (insert analogy for that holiday) while a glowing candle in the window slowly dims and snow begins to fall. I’d love to be in that creative meeting where the “Film Director” is jacked up on Red Bull and spitting out ideas for crap like this. “Wait! What if it was a (insert animal) that looks AT the viewer and makes a funny face, like ‘how did that happen?’” Annnnnnd, “scene!” A while back, my dear friend Bryce had a washing machine go on the fritz. He called me asking if he could come over and wash his clothes. We had a nice visit. Two days later, I received a card in the mail thanking me for letting him use my laundry facilities. It was so nice and unexpected (not to mention unnecessary), it made me smile for the rest of the week. I’m telling you, it’s things like this that live with me forever. Tiny things can make big impressions. It’s thoughtful. It’s romantic. It’s kind. It’s just a card, Jill. Get over it. I still send birthday cards and stick a $1 dollar bill inside. This was what I used to get from my aunts and it was always such a nice gesture. Even today, it’s just fun to open up a card and receive a buck. What can you buy with a dollar? Not a card, but you get the idea. Yeah, it’s almost worthless, but I’m tellin’ ya, it’s still fun to do. Nowadays, (I know… here comes the lecture), people wish others happy birthday by clicking on Facebook and “liking” the fact that Facebook not only reminded you when your imaginary friend’s birthday was, but that you didn’t have to write anything else. Yes, the few (very few) times I’ve done this, I felt horrible. It’s meaningless to me and seems fake as

ever. Gee, it took me all of a nanosecond to make a decision to click on “thumbs up.” Seriously, any Rhesus monkey can do this. I’m ashamed. Ashamed, I tell ya. But if I were to get in my car, drive to the store, and begin my search-anddestroy mission to find you

You got your secular and nonsecular cards. Cards for Bar Mitzvahs; Bat Mitzvahs; Happy Quinceañera! Congratulations, You’re Retiring! Getting Older; Buying a House; Divorced Now; Good Luck On That Operation You’ve Always Wanted; or the Death

love to send a card that conveyed that. Yeah, you can order cards like that online, but when I’m card shopping, I’m in the middle of running errands and need one right now. Maybe Hallmark hasn’t quite discovered this demographic yet.

the perfect card, buy that card, sign that card, put a dollar in that card and mail it to you…believe me, you’ll enjoy that a helluva lot more than looking at how many “likes” you got the morning of your birthday. Going back to the card rack…the cards are still not quite as diverse as they could be. Sure, we can mail cards that are in Spanish, or have an AfricanAmerican slant to them.

of a Parakeet. But I’m talking about a full-on “Gay card” section that has imagery of samesex couples. (Girl, please. I could riff all day on glitter jokes, but that’s too easy.) If a card that featured two females holding hands were available, would that not sell? I have wanted to send a card like this, but I can’t find it. What about your same-sex couple friends getting married? Man, I’d

Or perhaps a “Gay card” is something Publix, Walgreens, and Target isn’t interested in? I should send them a card telling them so. Meanwhile, I’ll keep searching for the perfect card and write my thank you notes, or best wishes, or something silly and of course, slip a dollar inside.

If a card that featured two females holding hands were available, would that not sell?

13 YEARS of the lgbt community in pArAdise

hirteen years ago,

a small number of community leaders gathered in a bar and decided St. Petersburg was ready to celebrate its LGBT community. Today, the city boasts the largest LGBT Pride celebration south of Atlanta. Many may view 13 as an unlucky number, but for St. Pete Pride it could be the best number yet.

or brundage, trans-advocacy was not something that was originally in her admittedly exceptional wheelhouse.

“I didn’t really actually have any thought into the world of being anyone’s spokesperson originally,” Brundage says. “When I came out, self-identified as transgender, at that point I realized how underrepresented we are in the community. I don’t want to say that I feel like I was obligated to it, but I feel like it was my duty to help spread education about it.” When asked what are the important aspects of what defines Brundage as a spokesperson, she pins it all down to equality (which is apt, considering she does work with Equality Florida). “It is about equal rights for everybody. I was involved with the transgender community from the beginning because it was an easy segue way for me and then spreading out into the LGBT organizations. And now I am trying to be involved in all organizations.” And what is ‘all organizations’? “For me,” Brundage confides. “It’s about being main-stream.” One doesn’t get more mainstream than Brundage either. Her highlight reels include

the Tampa Chamber of Commerce (she is the president of the LGBT chamber of commerce), advocacy training at PNC bank and a myriad of other credentials that are so numerous it borders on superhuman. “I think it is just being there and showing up. Doing that brings an awareness to more people, and through that I am affecting change.” Another aspect of mainstream living is Brundage is married with children. Together wife Whitney RousseauBrundage, she is raising her children with a full on education of their unique upbringing . “They know everything,” Brundage laughs. In their off time the Brundage family enjoys theme parks. Brundage hopes her children will make an appearance with their mom during the parade. “I hoping the kids want to ride in the car. I’ve already ordered 2000 light up necklaces to throw, and I know how much they like to throw things!”

Nick Janovsky Strategic Campaign consultant/author

n

Aaron Alper

icK JavonsKy has spent the

majority of his life in Hillsborough area. If you had asked him ten years ago whether or not St. Pete would be the place he calls home, his answer might have been different than from today. For him, it was the shift of pro-LGBT acceptance that sealed the deal.

“If you had asked me a few years ago whether or not I would have stayed in St. Pete I would have said ‘absolutely not’. I would have seen myself in Washington. But I fell in love with the art, the culture, the dining and I made so many political connections that I thought, ‘Yeah. I am gonna live here.” Equality is what drove Javonsky towards a political career as well as life as a LGBT activist. “I do what I do so other people don’t have to go through experiences I went through. I worked for a company that wasn’t open and inclusive. I was a top lever performer, and the only gay male member of the management team and I was not getting the same recognition as my peers and colleagues. I also have parents who are from a conservative background. So I realized it was up to me to take this entire issue head on.” And that he did. He has managed political campaigns for Kevin Beckner, Darden Rice and Alex Sink. Javonsky authored a book (Gay: A New Path Foreword) that dealt with his own trials and tribulations of coming out of closet. He fought against Pam Bondi, as well as founded his own LLC Strategic Campaigns where he

provides consultation to politicians who support pro-LGBT policies. Javonsky has also been a mentor to young LGBT interns, solidifying his passion for making the path easier for those who have come after him. Not only did his work ethic pay off in the traditional sense, but it also made for acceptance in his home life. His family is now accepting of his being out as a gay man. Janovsky rarely takes time off, but admits he will be taking a day off for his 34th birthday. However, for the most part his job is 24/7, 365 days a year. I In his “off time” Javonsky considers himself to be a “closet redneck”. He loves country music and sports. Javonsky is single, but not lamentably so. For those interested, his only request is that he find someone who “will go with (him) to any situation and not make it any worse”. Janovsky is not lacking in any aspect of his life, “I am extremely happy, I keep busy and I have some of the best friends in the world.” He is excited to take on his role as Grand Marshal. “I want my time as Grand Marshal to be a way to show that we all have one voice and that we all deserve an equal playing field.”

Larry Biddle is proof positive of this. Too often the gay community is quick to treat age as a disability rather than an asset and it is a shame. Larry Biddle’s life is a fascinating tale. Rather than go into the details of his success as a community leader, like having raised the money to help fund the new Metro Wellness house downtown, Biddle is keen to discuss his love for his husband of 23 years, David Warner (who is the editor of Creative Loafing Tampa). Biddle speaks of Warner with a candid nature that was both hysterical and heartwarming. “We met in Philadelphia. David was a buddy volunteer of somebody who had AIDS. Of course, when I saw him I thought ‘Wow. That is a very good looking man’. It took me a while to approach him. During that time he had been dating someone who I absolutely hated. So I thought, well as good looking as he is maybe that wasn’t the best, uh, recommendation.” Luckily Warner broke up with Biddle’s adversary and the dating commenced. Despite Biddle’s carnal attraction to Warner, he is proud to say his sexuality did not get the best of him. “We didn’t do the thing the most gay men do. We actually dated a few months before we had sex.” Kizmet brought Biddle and Warner to the area. Despite initial apprehensions to the political climate, the two built a home together and became one of the power couples of

the Burg area. It is clear Biddle has an immense amount of pride when it comes to where he lives. “It has changed so much for the better since we first came here.” Of course, being a role model for the Grindr generation of gay men isn’t the only talisman Biddle has to his name. Throughout his career his tenacity has allowed him to raise record-breaking amounts of money for local pro-LGBT politician’s campaigns. As stated before, he helped rebuild the new Metro Wellness house where his focus his providing a safe space for homeless LGBT youth. Biddle is excited about a grassroots training program that is blossoming from it. “St. Pete just got 100% score of being a gay friendly city,” Biddle says. “The problem though… is how do we know what businesses are gay friendly? So we are offering training programs that creates a sort of a scale that can be applied to businesses so not only are we a gay friendly city but we are going to make sure we can get that from businesses as well.” Biddle plans on retiring soon but admits that his work ethic will probably keep him going. “It’s one project to the next that keeps me happy.”

Alex Newell, who played transgender student Wade “Unique” Adams on Glee and was runner-up on The Glee Project, sat down with Watermark before he takes over the stage for St. Pete Pride’s annual 27/82 Concert on June 26. He told all us about what playing “Unique” on the show taught him, where his love from music all started and giving us a preview of what to expect from his first debut album coming out toward the end of this year.

little, and I wanted to wear it everywhere—the supermarket, the park, the school. Just everywhere I could wear the choir robe, I wanted it on my body. So with that, my mother said ‘you’re going to be a singer.’ I think something genetically in me knew i wanted to be a singer from the time that I was a child up until now. most people know you from the glee project And then lAter stArring As wade uniQue AdAms on glee. whAt wAs it like plAying A trAnschArActer, especiAlly how within the lAst couple yeArs trAns-visibility An storytelling hAs become A more prominent thing on television?

It was great. Yes, Unique was trans, but I don’t think of the character as trans. I thought of her more as a person who is going through life. A person that has life struggles, and a person who is trying to educate people at the same time. I feel like that brought the heart of the character to life in a way. And just getting to play such a pivotal role, there’s not too many times you get to play such a role that means so much to so many different people in different walks of life—whether they’re trans, whether they’re not trans, whether they’re gay or whether they’re the stay-at-home mom who’s living her life. It’s just one of those things that some way can relate about not being accepted or being accepted or being different in general or being unique. So having the opportunity to play one of those roles like that is such an amazing experience.

The whole episode of ‘The End of Twerk’ with singing ‘If I Were a Boy’ and the bathroom situation, it never crossed my mind ever in life that the trans queer had such a struggle with something as simple as using a bathroom. It never crossed my mind. I thought if you identified as a woman you go to the woman’s bathroom; if you identify as a man, you go to the mens bathroom. It’s one of those things that I didn’t realize it’s something that they would go through. what part oF uniQue would you sAy you embrAce the most in your everydAy life or Can identiFy with within your own self?

Having that sense of selfawareness, I feel like I brought a lot of myself into the self-awareness part. Like Unique wasn’t stupid;

Unique knew what was going on. Unique has her ear to the ground and one finger up at the same time. I brought that savvy, smart and snappy thing. And I’m very savvy and smart—or at least I like to think that [laughs]. But yeah, I love that unknown confidence, like you don’t know where that confidence is coming from at the same time.

three times a week and recording songs. Even that on Glee really helped me because I can sing through a song what would take a normal recording artist two and a half days, I can do that in like three hours because I’ve learned how to control my voice. I’ve learned how to go into the studio sing a song out and be done with it, and especially on the time crunch that we were always on where I would have 30 minutes to record a full song with our half hour for lunch and go right back to work. Or I had a fitting or a super Glee day, which was one when would have to record two scenes, a musical number, dance rehearsal and a fitting all at the same time we were recording a song. So I know how to go in an execute. It’s fun because not only am I making something that’s important to me, it’s something that’s my own. It’s not a cover of a song; it’s not anybody else’s baby. whAt cAn we expect from your first Album? will you be shAring some of thAt with us At st. pete pride?

I’m not doing anything off of my immediate album, but I’m doing some of the stuff that I’ve done with Clean Bandit and I’m dong some of the stuff I’ve done with The Knox. That’s always fun in itself because those two songs are just dance-driven and it’s just jump up an down, feel-good music. For my album, it’s this new sound… it’s Beyonce meets Donna Summers. It’s so much fun, and it’s very theatrical and fun. It’s very smart, intelligent and thought out music. It’s not just like that happy, bubble gum, oh top 40, yes this is great. I hope it to be something that’s new and inventive, and just bringing something new to music at the same time.

you’ve been doing your rounds recently At different pride events Across the nAtion. whAt Are some of the different pride events you’ve performed At so fAr And how hAs thAt experience been?

Oh my god, I’ve done so many. I’ve done San Francisco Pride, I’ve done Boston Pride, I’ve done San Diego, Palm Springs, Salt Lake City, Detroit Pride—literally the list goes on and on. I’ve got Chicago Pride, and this summer

yes, unique was trans, but i don’t think of [her] as trans.

I thought of her more as a person who is going through life. A person that has life struggles, and a person who is trying to educate people at the same time. — aLex neWeLL alone I’m doing Milwaukee to do their Pride and St. Pete, obviously. There’s just so many of them, but they’re all so different and all so unique in a sense. Every crowd is so different yet the same at the same time. I honestly feel like there should be like an ‘American Pride,’ like the Olympics or the Superbowl. We pick one city and we all fly to it [laughs]. It’s such a good feeling to see such a giant community come together and to just be happy in a sense.

why did you pick to perform At st. pete pride, And whAt Are you looking forwArd to the most About st. pete pride?

I’ve chose St. Pete Pride because I honestly love doing Prides. Whenever I get the opportunity to do them, I will jump right there and do it. I also feel like I haven’t been to Florida in such a long time that it would be a good experience to get down there and see the community that is down there. And I think for me, the thing that I’m always most excited for is to get on stage and sing for the community that supports me and everything I do. whAt is your fAvorite or most memorAble pride event moment?

Oh my gosh, I don’t even know.

watermark Your lgbt life.

They’re all so different and they’re all so memorable at the same time. I don’t think I have a favorite one, but I do have a most memorable one—it would have to be Palm Springs Pride. I was there with one of my really good friends just me and him. It was one of my first Prides, and we just had fun. We drove down there in the car. I forgot to tell him it was an overnight trip, so he didn’t pack a bag… It was a fun night. It was like a ‘let my hair down’ kind of night. Because normally when I go to Pride, I have a regiment. I have to do this, I have to sing—I have a routine. But for this Pride,

June 18 - July 1, 2015 // Issue 22.13

the whole routine was thrown out the window. whAt cAn we expect to see from you, in regArds to your music, in the next yeAr? is there A dAte set yet for your Album?

There isn’t a date set yet, but I think that by the fall there should be an album out. It’s just me living life through my music and hopefully doing another television show and maybe a movie. And because I’m so at heart an actor, maybe doing broadway. I love singing, acting and my dancing— I’ve been doing musical theater my entire life, so I have to get back to it. I just want to do everything.

ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) Important Safety Information (continued) What are the possible side effects of ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA may cause the following additional serious side effects: • Serious psychiatric problems. Severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior have been reported by a small number of patients. Some patients have had thoughts of suicide, and a few have actually committed suicide. These problems may occur more often in patients who have had mental illness. • Kidney problems (including decline or failure of kidney function). If you have had kidney problems, or take other medicines that may cause kidney problems, your healthcare provider should do regular blood tests. Symptoms that may be related to kidney problems include a high volume of urine, thirst, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. • Other serious liver problems. Some patients have experienced serious liver problems, including liver failure resulting in transplantation or death. Most of these serious side effects occurred in patients with a chronic liver disease such as hepatitis infection, but there have also been a few reports in patients without any existing liver disease. • Changes in bone mineral density (thinning bones). Lab tests show changes in the bones of patients treated with tenofovir DF, a component of ATRIPLA. Some HIV patients treated with tenofovir DF developed thinning of the bones (osteopenia), which could lead to fractures. Also, bone pain and softening of the bone (which may lead to fractures) may occur as a consequence of kidney problems. If you have had bone problems in the past, your healthcare provider may want to do tests to check your bones or may prescribe medicines to help your bones. Common side effects: • Patients may have dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, and/or unusual dreams during treatment with ATRIPLA. These side effects may be reduced if you take ATRIPLA at bedtime on an empty stomach; they tend to go away after taking ATRIPLA for a few weeks. Tell your healthcare provider right away if any of these side effects continue or if they bother you. These symptoms may be more severe if ATRIPLA is used with alcohol and/or mood-altering (street) drugs. • If you are dizzy, have trouble concentrating, and/or are drowsy, avoid activities that may be dangerous, such as driving or operating machinery. • Rash is a common side effect with ATRIPLA that usually goes away without any change in treatment. Rash may be serious in a small number of patients. Rash occurs more commonly in children and may be a serious problem. If a rash develops, call your healthcare provider right away. • Other common side effects include: tiredness, upset stomach, vomiting, gas, and diarrhea. Other possible side effects: • Changes in body fat have been seen in some people taking anti-HIV-1 medicines. Increase of fat in the upper back and neck, breasts, and around the trunk may happen. Loss of fat from the legs, arms, and face may also happen. The cause and long-term health effects of these changes in body fat are not known. • Skin discoloration (small spots or freckles) may also happen. • In some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS), signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after anti-HIV treatment is started. If you notice any symptoms of infection, contact your healthcare provider right away. • Additional side effects are inflammation of the pancreas, allergic reaction (including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), shortness of breath, pain, stomach pain, weakness, and indigestion. This is not a complete list of side effects. Tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you notice any side effects while taking ATRIPLA. You should take ATRIPLA once daily on an empty stomach. Taking ATRIPLA at bedtime may make some side effects less bothersome. These are not all the medicines that may cause problems if you take ATRIPLA. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take. Keep a complete list of all the prescription and nonprescription medicines as well as any herbal remedies that you are taking, how much you take, and how often you take them. Make a new list when medicines or herbal remedies are added or stopped, or if the dose changes. Give copies of this list to all of your healthcare providers and pharmacists every time you visit your healthcare provider or fill a prescription. This will give your healthcare provider a complete picture of the medicines you use. Then he or she can decide the best approach for your situation. How should I take ATRIPLA? •

Take the exact amount of ATRIPLA your healthcare provider prescribes. Never change the dose on your own. Do not stop this medicine unless your healthcare provider tells you to stop.

You should take ATRIPLA on an empty stomach.

Swallow ATRIPLA with water.

Taking ATRIPLA at bedtime may make some side effects less bothersome.

Do not miss a dose of ATRIPLA. If you forget to take ATRIPLA, take the missed dose right away, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the next dose. Carry on with your regular dosing schedule. If you need help in planning the best times to take your medicine, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

If you believe you took more than the prescribed amount of ATRIPLA, contact your local poison control center or emergency room right away.

Tell your healthcare provider if you start any new medicine or change how you take old ones. Your doses may need adjustment.

When your ATRIPLA supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider or pharmacy. This is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop resistance to ATRIPLA and become harder to treat.

Your healthcare provider may want to do blood tests to check for certain side effects while you take ATRIPLA.

Reyataz (atazanavir sulfate), Prezista (darunavir) with Norvir (ritonavir), or Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir); these medicines may increase the amount of tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) in your blood, which could result in more side effects. Reyataz is not recommended with ATRIPLA. You may need to be monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA, Prezista, and Norvir together, or if you are taking ATRIPLA and Kaletra together. The dose of Kaletra should be increased when taken with efavirenz.

What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA? •

Women should not become pregnant while taking ATRIPLA and for 12 weeks after stopping it. Serious birth defects have been seen in the babies of animals and women treated with efavirenz (a component of ATRIPLA) during pregnancy. It is not known whether efavirenz caused these defects. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you are pregnant. Also talk with your healthcare provider if you want to become pregnant.

Women should not rely only on hormone-based birth control, such as pills, injections, or implants, because ATRIPLA may make these contraceptives ineffective. Women must use a reliable form of barrier contraception, such as a condom or diaphragm, even if they also use other methods of birth control. Efavirenz, a component of ATRIPLA, may remain in your blood for a time after therapy is stopped. Therefore, you should continue to use contraceptive measures for 12 weeks after you stop taking ATRIPLA.

Do not breastfeed if you are taking ATRIPLA. Some of the medicines in ATRIPLA can be passed to your baby in your breast milk. We do not know whether it could harm your baby. Also, mothers with HIV-1 should not breastfeed because HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in the breast milk. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding. You should stop breastfeeding or may need to use a different medicine.

Taking ATRIPLA with alcohol or other medicines causing similar side effects as ATRIPLA, such as drowsiness, may increase those side effects.

Do not take any other medicines, including prescription and nonprescription medicines and herbal products, without checking with your healthcare provider.

Do not share needles or other injection equipment.

Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like toothbrushes and razor blades.

Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safe sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood.

Changes in body fat. Changes in body fat develop in some patients taking anti HIV-1 medicine. These changes may include an increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (“buffalo hump”), in the breasts, and around the trunk. Loss of fat from the legs, arms, and face may also happen. The cause and long-term health effects of these fat changes are not known.

Skin discoloration (small spots or freckles) may also happen with ATRIPLA.

In some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS), signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after anti-HIV treatment is started. It is believed that these symptoms are due to an improvement in the body’s immune response, enabling the body to fight infections that may have been present with no obvious symptoms. If you notice any symptoms of infection, please inform your doctor immediately. Additional side effects are inflammation of the pancreas, allergic reaction (including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), shortness of breath, pain, stomach pain, weakness and indigestion.

Lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a medical emergency and may need to be treated in the hospital. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get signs of lactic acidosis. (See “What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?”)

Serious liver problems (hepatotoxicity), with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the liver (steatosis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any signs of liver problems. (See “What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?”)

Tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you notice any side effects while taking ATRIPLA.

“Flare-ups” of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, in which the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before, can occur if you have HBV and you stop taking ATRIPLA. Your healthcare provider will monitor your condition for several months after stopping ATRIPLA if you have both HIV-1 and HBV infection and may recommend treatment for your HBV. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection. If you have advanced liver disease and stop treatment with ATRIPLA, the “flare-up” of hepatitis B may cause your liver function to decline.

Contact your healthcare provider before stopping ATRIPLA because of side effects or for any other reason.

Serious psychiatric problems. A small number of patients may experience severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior while taking ATRIPLA. Some patients have thoughts of suicide and a few have actually committed suicide. These problems may occur more often in patients who have had mental illness. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you think you are having these psychiatric symptoms, so your healthcare provider can decide if you should continue to take ATRIPLA.

Keep ATRIPLA and all other medicines out of reach of children.

Store ATRIPLA at room temperature 77°F (25°C).

Keep ATRIPLA in its original container and keep the container tightly closed.

Do not keep medicine that is out of date or that you no longer need. If you throw any medicines away make sure that children will not find them.

Kidney problems (including decline or failure of kidney function). If you have had kidney problems in the past or take other medicines that can cause kidney problems, your healthcare provider should do regular blood tests to check your kidneys. Symptoms that may be related to kidney problems include a high volume of urine, thirst, muscle pain, and muscle weakness.

General information about ATRIPLA:

Other serious liver problems. Some patients have experienced serious liver problems including liver failure resulting in transplantation or death. Most of these serious side effects occurred in patients with a chronic liver disease such as hepatitis infection, but there have also been a few reports in patients without any existing liver disease.

This leaflet summarizes the most important information about ATRIPLA. If you would like more information, talk with your healthcare provider. You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for information about ATRIPLA that is written for health professionals.

Changes in bone mineral density (thinning bones). Laboratory tests show changes in the bones of patients treated with tenofovir DF, a component of ATRIPLA. Some HIV patients treated with tenofovir DF developed thinning of the bones (osteopenia) which could lead to fractures. If you have had bone problems in the past, your healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your bone mineral density or may prescribe medicines to help your bone mineral density. Additionally, bone pain and softening of the bone (which may contribute to fractures) may occur as a consequence of kidney problems.

Common side effects: Patients may have dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, and/or unusual dreams during treatment with ATRIPLA. These side effects may be reduced if you take ATRIPLA at bedtime on an empty stomach. They also tend to go away after you have taken the medicine for a few weeks. If you have these common side effects, such as dizziness, it does not mean that you will also have serious psychiatric problems, such as severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior. Tell your healthcare provider right away if any of these side effects continue or if they bother you. It is possible that these symptoms may be more severe if ATRIPLA is used with alcohol or mood altering (street) drugs. If you are dizzy, have trouble concentrating, or are drowsy, avoid activities that may be dangerous, such as driving or operating machinery.

This is not a complete list of side effects possible with ATRIPLA. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a more complete list of side effects of ATRIPLA and all the medicines you will take. How do I store ATRIPLA?

Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaflets. Do not use ATRIPLA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give ATRIPLA to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may harm them.

Do not use ATRIPLA if the seal over bottle opening is broken or missing. What are the ingredients of ATRIPLA? Active Ingredients: efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate Inactive Ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate. The film coating contains black iron oxide, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, red iron oxide, talc, and titanium dioxide. Rash may be common. Rashes usually go away without any change in treatment. In a small number of patients, rash may be serious. If you develop a rash, call your healthcare provider right away. Rash may be a serious problem in some children. Tell your child’s healthcare provider right away if you notice rash or any other side effects while your child is taking ATRIPLA. Other common side effects include tiredness, upset stomach, vomiting, gas, and diarrhea.

girls who spent any time as a Boy Scout or Girl Scout know the most important thing is to always be prepared.

We here at Watermark want you to have the best time possible at St. Pete Pride, so just like good scouts we have put together a list of items you will need to avoid those nighttime hazards during the parade and enjoy the daytime festival without wishing you packed something to combat the horrendous heat. Before we get to the list some quick, helpful tips that will allow you maximize the fun and decrease your annoyance during the weekend. First, leave your pets at home. I know that it’s tempting to bring along Fido, but trust us, the middle of Grand Central Ave at the end of June is no place for an animal physically incapable of sweating. Prepare yourselves for protesters. While they seem to be diminishing in numbers each year, there are always a few roaming around with their “God hates Fags” signs. Take this as a opportunity to snag a selfie with your boo in front of the confused disciples of the lord. Now, without further ado, your handy little reminder page to get yourself ready for Pride. Charge that phone! Tips to get the most out of your smartphone • Download apps like Lyft or Uber before you get to the festival grounds so you’ll have them ready if you need them. • Drop a pin with Google/ Apple Maps when you park your car. GPS your way back. • Download a weather app. Stay up-to-date rain or shine. • Make sure your phone has protection. Asphalt is very unforgiving if you drop your phone in the middle of a selfie.

schedule for The week of St Pete Pride Stonewall Reception Wednesday, June 24, 7-9 P.M. Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg What started out as an event for friends who enjoy the arts has turned into the must attend reception during the week of Pride. Gather at the Museum of Fine Arts in St Petersburg to launch Pride Weekend. The event, hosted and sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts, will feature an open full bar and light hors d’voeuvres.

The annual festival celebrating Tampa Bay’s LGBT community returns to St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District for its 13th anniversary June 24-28 and includes a fashion show, VIP reception, an outdoor concert, the return of the highly successful night parade and the outdoor vendor fair. The lineup may seem familiar, but there are plenty of changes for the 2015 celebration. The Stonewall Reception returns to the Museum of Fine Arts along St. Petersburg’s waterfront on Wednesday, June 24, at 7 p.m. In years’ past the VIP ticketed reception was held on Thursday, so make note of the change in the day. The reason for the change is likely to accommodate the revamp of Pride in Fashion, which goes back to the Macy’s Department store within Tyrone Square Mall on Thursday, June 25, at 6 p.m. In 2014 the two events were combined, which packed the museum to capacity. Separating the two and shifting the fashion show, featuring Ross Matthews, back to the store should make room for even more attendees. This year’s 27/82 concerttitled after the longitude and latitude of the city-features

Alex Newell, who played the transgender character Unique in the wildly popular FOX series Glee. (See our interview with the star in this issue). While the concert isn’t new, its location is when it returns Friday, June 26. Rather than being inside a concert venue, it will be outside on the corner of Central Avenue and 26th Street. While

until dusk. As with years’ past, the route begins across from Georgie’s Alibi, winds through Kenwood and then shoots down Central Avenue toward downtown St. Pete between 30th St. N. and 21st St. N. If that’s not enough to keep you celebrating, come back to the Grand Central District for the annual vendor fair.

The second night parade is expected to be bigger and better than last year. Expect larger and brighter floats with a smoother flow.

the concert is free, donations for Pride will be accepted. The change is based on feedback from the community, according to organizers. The second night parade on Saturday, June 27, is expected to be bigger and better than last year for a number of reasons, but mostly because participants have a year of preparation under their belts. Nuances like lighting techniques and navigating a dark route now have a learning curve attached. So expect larger and brighter floats with a smoother flow. The festivities kick off at 5 p.m. with pre-parade festivities, but the floats won’t start to roll

Eric Skains, executive director of St. Pete Pride, announced that the festival has been extended an entire city block to accommodate the high demand of participants this year. The scheduling also gives those who attend (and work the booths) time to recover from the night parade. The festival begins at 11 a.m. and wraps at 6 p.m. Of course, representatives of Pride, including this year’s grand marshals, also featured in this expanded issue of Watermark, will be at all of the events. Thirteen years is a long time, but as St. Pete Pride has proven, things really do get better with age.

Pride in Fashion Thursday, June 25, 6-8 P.M. Macy’s Tyrone Square, St. Petersburg Macy’s Tyrone Square Mall presents “Pride in Fashion” hosted by E! Network personality and RuPaul’s Drag Race judge, Ross Mathews. Join Matthews for photo ops, live music, a fashion show and refreshments provided by Quench Lounge. Every $10 donation made to Pride at this event will recieve a matched $10 Macy’s gift card. 27/82: The Concert

27/82 Concert Friday, June 26, 7 P.M. 26th and Central Ave., St. Petersburg This year’s benefit concert promises to be more unique than ever as Alex Newell from Glee will make history headlining the first free and outdoor “27/82” Concert in the private lot at the corner of Central Avenue and 26th Street in St Petersburg. A mix of various bands and local singers will warm up the crowd. The concert is being presented by St Pete Pride and Sarasota Pride, and the proceeds will go to the St Pete Pride Community Grants Program.

LGBT Pride Parade Saturday, June 27, 5-10 P.M. 22nd St.-27th St. along Central Ave., St. Petersburg The LGBT Pride Parade, held within the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood and Grand Central District, features more than 150 organizations and businesses supporting and celebrating the Tampa Bay LGBT community. The Saturday Block Party begins at 5:00 p.m., held between 22nd Street and 27th Street along Central Avenue, featuring DJs, food and beverages. The Parade will roll off at Sunset.

Pride Street Festival Sunday, June 28, 11 A.M.-6 P.M. 22nd St.-27th St. along Central Ave., St. Petersburg The St Pete Pride Street Festival will again be the largest community event of the season as festival goers come for live performances and entertainment. Over 350 exhibitors will line both sides of Central Avenue for six city blocks in a rainbow celebration of food and beverage vendors, artists, small businesses, corporations, professional sports teams, community outreach groups, nonprofit organizations and Pride themed merchandisers.

Fonda weep. As the showbiz icon releases a steady stream of waterworks—she’s “wiping tears away,” Tomlin notes—Fonda pauses slightly to collect herself before answering. The question? Why gay men have forever revered older women even when the rest of the world— and Hollywood – have not. “I find the question so moving that it makes me cry,” says Fonda. It’s one revelatory moment among many during this candid

conversation with the 77-yearold actress and Tomlin, 75, who appear together in the new Netflix original series Grace and Frankie. The beloved pair play two golden girls forced to start anew after their husbands drop a big truth bomb: They’re in love with each other.

This isn’t the actresses’ first time working together, of course. In 1980, Tomlin and Fonda memorably joined forces with Dolly Parton to put misogynistic men in their place in Nine to Five. Decades later, the film is a feministcelebrated comedy classic. Will Dolly make a cameo on Grace and Frankie? During our freewheeling interview, the two longtime friends talked about the possibility of a Nine to Five reunion on their new series, but they revealed plenty more too. Fonda opened up about her own experiences dating high-profile gay men, one of whom proposed

oLd on to your puMps,

because Hedwig and her angry inch may be returning to the Parliament House.

As mentioned in the last issue, local theatre acting and directing icon David Lee (arguably most famous for his 2002 ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ production) has recently accepted the position of Manager in charge of Show Procurement

for the Parliament House’s Footlight Theatre. Effective as of the Fringe Festival, Lee will be taking over for Drew Sizemore, who previously held the position. “I’m officially only doing it for the summer,” Lee protests, modestly unsure of how

long his tenure will be in the position. “We’re just testing the waters.” The rest of the community seems to have more faith though, as he says that in the short time since the end of the Fringe he’s already had bookings through January. An Orlando native and bigwig of the Central Florida theatre scene since its inception, Lee most certainly has the clout to stand up to the task. Having worked aside local legends such as the late Paul Wegman (Ms. P) and Michael Wanzie from an early age, he’s no stranger to both Orlando’s rich theatre and queer tradition. “I was doing plays [in Orlando] when I was eighteen – barely eighteen, actually – with Ms. P, Paul Wegman,” he reminisces. “I was in the first [Orlando] Fringe. In the first Gay Pride Parade in Orlando with Paul too.” In 1993 Lee took his talents out into the wider world, moving up north to pursue a Master of Fine Art in Directing from Yale University. It’s up there that he put down roots, forming Ant Farm Productions in New York City in 1997 and acting in and directing a number of productions. It was not until a dream role appeared that Lee set his sights back south, returning to Orlando in 2002 to perform in a stage production of the cult classic rock opera ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch,’ starring as the eponymous rock diva. “[It was] the show that would not die!” he laughs, hinting at Hedwig’s possible return to the Footlight stage during his reign at the theatre. “We will bring it back again, when the rights are available.”

Footlight Theater announces Summer 2015 season. Field Guide To the Gays June 20, 27, 29

A Fringe Festival favorite, Logan Donahoo’s one-man show takes the audience on a comedic tour through the world of being gay, with topics ranging from activism to hankie code and more. For the Footlight Theatre performance Donahoo is combining Parts 1 and 2, as well as bringing even more new material for an outrageously hilarious time!

Sex Drugs Rock & Roll JuLy 3-4

David Lee stars in this bitterly dark comedy one-man show analyzing the issues that define modern life. Formatted in a series of monologues by unnamed characters, Lee breathes life into Eric Bogosian’s script, giving each of these characters a distinctive and memorable voice.

1969: Stonewall JuLy 11, 18

This funny yet heartfelt exploration of the night that birthed the modern gay rights movement runs through much of July. Playwright John Ryan creates a web of familiar, interlocking characters, and through them shows with a moving intensity the effect that the Stonewall Riots had on so many.

Jeff Jones’ Little Miss Parliament House JuLy 25

Just in time for the Parliament House’s 40th anniversary Jeff Jones returns with his ‘Little Miss Parliament House’ pageant. Come see a host of the Trail’s finest men, ladies, and everything in between as Jones sorts through to find who deserves the title of ‘Little Miss.’

Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead august 1, 8, 15, 22

David Lee directs this “unauthorized parody” of the classic Peanuts characters, reimagining them as a pack of high school miscreants. Fun topics such as suicide, eating disorders, drug abuse, and sexual confusion await!

After ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ Lee resumed life in his hometown to a degree, bouncing back and forth between Orlando and New York for a number of years. Although still on the stage plenty, much of that time was spent using the degree that he’d worked for at Yale, as he put on a number of original productions such as ‘Nirvanov,’ a musical mashup of unlikely bedfellows Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov and grunge band Nirvana, and ‘The Three Pussy Riot Sisters,’ tying together – you guessed it – legal transcripts from the 2012 Pussy Riot trial in Russia and Chekhov’s The Three Sisters. “I’ve done a couple adaptations of Chekhov,” Lee says on his affinity for the Russian author. “I fell in love with that writer [Chekhov] in grad school.” Now officially back in Orlando, he thinks he may like to stay. “I’m sick of winters,” he laughs. “I’ve decided I’m sick of the weather in New York, and so for now I’m staying here and figuring out what I want to do next.” Perhaps his new position at the Footlight Theatre will last longer than he would like to admit. For the moment, Lee is pulling on all his storied history to fill the Footlight Theatre with as many diverse acts as possible. “We’re starting now by bringing back some of the Fringe hits,” Lee says. “We started last week during Gay Days with ‘Bubble Gum Party.’ This week Logan Donahoo is bringing his Field Guide to the Gays, and he’s actually merged ‘Part 1’ and ‘Part 2’ and there’s all new material.” Weeks to come after include John Ryan’s ‘1969:Stonewall’ and Lee’s own one-man Fringe hit ‘Sex Drugs Rock & Roll.’ Lee says that he wants to expand the Footlight Theatre’s repertoire outside of its usual realm of weekly drag shows and farcical comedy – although there will be plenty of that as well. “Susan [Unger] has typically in the past wanted things very funny – she wants her patrons to come out with a smile on their face,” he explains. “[But] she and

We did the play ‘Bent’ [a Holocaust drama set in a concentration camp] there. lily: It’s like (drag performer) Lypsinka. I knew he was from Mississippi, and he’s like a little kitten in a way; his hair is so soft and pale red, and he’s got a big, high, very white-skinned forehead. When I first saw Lypsinka, I could just see this little boy – 4 or 5 years old in Mississippi—growing up around all these Southern women, and my family’s Southern too. I just saw him seeing through them and into their hearts. He saw the women being oppressed and being pigeonholed and how they act kind of audaciously just to free themselves. I just could see that little boy, and he satirized women’s behavior so brilliantly—all the stuff, the travails they have—and I just wept when I saw him because he was so brilliant. I think there are hinges between those two things. Jane is wiping tears from her eyes. jAne: How she said that – that he sees through them into their hearts. And also: The notion of surviving. lily: And him making up this incredible creature who’s just so much fun to watch, and yet it’s painful. I could feel his little boy pain all through those years.

first time she’d been out to dinner in five years because she had some allergies to chemicals. And there she was with her wife! An amazing woman violinist! And I thought, well, this is very great. I never ever would have imagined back in the day that Pat Johnson would be able to get married to her lady friend. let’s tAlk About your friendship with eAch other. wAs it smooth sAiling from the very beginning?

lily: Yeah, we hit it off right away. I was so excited when Jane came to see one of my shows way back in the day jAne: This was pre-Nine to Five! lily: Yeah. I was all excited. She came backstage and was very complimentary, and then next thing I knew… jAne: I was offering her a role in Nine to Five, which was originally going to be a serious movie until I saw Lily’s one-woman show called Appearing Nightly. I decided I didn’t want to make a movie about office workers until she was one of them. And it had to be a comedy. It took me a year to convince her and Dolly to be in it! During that year we kind of saw each other because we’d be talking about different ideas and stuff, and so we kind of became friends before Nine to Five.

whAt is different About working with eAch other on GRACE AND FRANKIE compAred to when you worked together on NINE TO FIVE 35 yeArs Ago?

jAne: We’re together more! I mean, it’s four months, almost every day for almost 15 hours, which is a real treat for me. You know, Lily is very unusual. She has a real funny bone. So, watching her take on not just the scripts but life is a pleasure. lily: Thank you, Ms. Fonda! After doing the first seAson oF GRACE AND FRANKIE, whAt Advice do you hAve for women who Are romAnticAlly involved with A gAy mAn?

jAne: Try to stay friends. You know, it happened to a friend of mine when I lived in Atlanta, and she told me about it and it was very hard for her because she really loved him a lot. Because she loved him, she was able to understand that he needed to become who he really was, and they remained very, very close friends and they still live in the same building. I think that’s the way to

hAve either of you dAted A gAy mAn before?

jAne: Oh yes! Oh my god. When I was young, I was the female that gay guys wanted to try to become heterosexual with. A very famous actor who’s gay – and I will not name names—asked me to marry him. I was very flattered, but I said, “Why?” This was 1964. And I

why so-and-so didn’t, you know, take them into their arms and sweep them away. Because they danced together so well! They were beautiful, tall blonde people! They were just kind of breathtaking, and they did make a nice looking couple, but that was about as far as it would go—looks. I had a girlfriend and we got into a big fight about being gay when I first moved to New York. She was watching Lust for Life with Anthony Quinn, who is so macho

gimmicky or exploitAtive?

lily: I think it’s been a long time coming. Although, it’s happened because of so many things that have gone before, and this culture has changed. Large parts of the culture have changed. Not the culture as a whole. You know, there’s still a lot of— jAne: Homophobia. I lived in the South for 20 years, and, unfortunately, homophobia is all too alive and rampant, but because

It’s very interesting. And I lived for two years with a guy who was trying to become heterosexual. I’m intimately acquainted with that. did thAt come to mind As you were shooting this show, where you ARE mArried to A gAy mAn?

jAne: (Laughs) No! Not until you made me think of it right now. lily, hAve you hAd Any similAr experiences?

lily: No, I didn’t; but I had girlfriends who dated gay guys in college and they couldn’t understand

as Gauguin in that movie, and I said something like, “Look how macho this guy is—he’s unbelievable!” She said, “If I were gay, I’d beat down the door of the nearest psychiatrist.” I said, “If I fell in love with my refrigerator, I’d give it lamb chops!”

lily: No, I did not. jAne: No, I didn’t either. lily: I mean, I began to suspect. The last generation or two that have come along, they so demanded to be visible and they’ve taken for granted everything that the gay community had fought for so hard for a long

i remember when this show wAs Announced, everyone wAs really hyped about you two getting bAck together, but they were Also hoping for A dolly pArton cAmeo. hAs thAt been discussed As A reAl possibility Amongst showrunners?

lily: Well, it’s been discussed because so many people inquired about it and thought about it. Of course Dolly’s a good friend and the three of us really like each other and we’ve been friends all these years, but because Grace and Frankie is set apart, we want to establish our identity before we think about dragging the Nine to Five life into it. jAne: It’s a different style. It’s a different animal. We wanna keep it that way. For now, anyway. whAt do you think your NINE TO FIVE chArActers, judy And violet, Are up to these dAys?

We reached out to him to see if these rumors were true, he graciously shared a selfie of himself with Margaret. Turns out they were recording at that moment. This just proves you don’t need the crown to come out the big winner! Josh verified more songs were in the works, although not confirmed with Josh we heard another popular LGBT performer’s name being thrown around, Adam Lambert!

ocaL artist and bLogger brendan o’connor contacted the dot about beautifying what has been an eye sore for a number of decades, some weird traffic box that didn’t seem to provide a purpose. As an effort to beautify the Mills area, Brendan was given permission to decorate it and so #PutABirdOnIt was born. Taking a collection and out of his own pocket obtaining a different assortment avian tchotchkes and tiles, Brandon decorated the pole. Sadly, someone was a little unhappy with his artistic expression and fouled everything up. The DOT, without notice to Brendan, removed the decorated box leaving only the tiled pole it was once perched on. When question the DOT said the box was removed because it was too close to the road— remember this box sat there for at least 20 or more years.

oMetiMes art is an expression of a MeMory of a Loved one, take Patty Sheehan’s tribute to her long time aid Chase Smith. After his passing in 2013, she erected two brightly colored pink rabbits. This was done because Chase would often dress as the Easter Bunny for the local children. One of these festive bunnies, nicknamed Pinky, resides lake side at Lake Como Often decorated by the local neighbors for special events, the bunny was loved and cared for, much like the birds. Unfortunately a small group of neighbors decided to split hares and complain. Despite having gone through all the right channels to get the rabbit installed, Sheehan decided to relocate the 3-foot-tall pink bunny. The neighborhood rallied, getting a petition going and even using plastic chains tied to the rabbit with a sign reading “SAVE OUR BUNNY.” Commissioner Sheehan decided not to relocate the bunny once the petitions were signed. An entire neighborhood beat out the bad apples... err… carrots?

interesting Fact:

Alexx and Nikky met at a club where Alexx used to be a shooter girl, who sold Jello-O shots. Nikky used to buy tons of Jell-O shots from Alexx because she like her and thought she was cute, but Nikky didn’t even like Jell-O shots. She thought they were disgusting; she just wanted to get Alexx’s attention.

“W

ithin the first Month

of being together, I ended up being deployed, and we had to go through that. I think that is honestly what kind of set the tone for our relationship. We became best friends, and she ended up staying there for me when I came back from deployment,” Alexx says. “I just realized that I didn’t want another day without her.” Alexx, who’s a Navy Seabee Steelworker, and Nikky, who’s a store manager and performing arts dancer, have been through it all since they’ve met back in early 2011, but they both believe that the ups and downs of their relationship is what made them the happy married couple they are today. “I think it helped us a lot because it made us stronger,” Nikky said. Nikky recalls how they first met at a club in Atlanta called Le Buzz when Alexx was a shot girl. After about three months, they finally started dating. While Nikky was stateside waiting for

Alexx to return, Alexx says it was just as hard being deployed and in relationship with Nikky because “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” wasn’t repealed just yet. “It was really hard at first because ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ was in the works of being repealed, so I had to hide it for a little bit,” Alexx says. “It was hard for her because when I was deployed if anything were to happen to me and she wasn’t on good terms with my family for some reason or another, she would never know if anything happened to me. She wouldn’t know if I was hurt or not because they wouldn’t allow Red Cross to contact her. As soon as ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ got repealed and as soon as we were allowed to be recognized married federally, it opened up doors for everybody and it made it easier because she

could attend certain functions that she couldn’t before.” Both knew, after Alexx came back home, that there was no one else they wanted to be with more than each other. Alexx and Nikky did their engagement differently than most couples because they both asked each other, believing every woman should be proposed to. And while their beachside wedding was a small intimate event with their friend Cheryl officiating the ceremony, it was still filled with emotion for both women. The day of the wedding, they got dressed in separate rooms and left in separate cars. They walked down two separate pathways toward the beach and then met each other by the ocean. “When we went to give our vows, I had everything written out and planned. Next thing you know, I wasn’t reading from the paper at all. I was just kind of speaking from the heart, made it shorter than I thought, but it was great,” Alexx said.
