Greetings, This June and every month in Orlando, we have a lot to take pride in. This includes that as a community, we are working to ensure that Orlando is a city where all residents are welcomed, valued and respected. I hope that during Pride Month we can recognize and celebrate our commitment to inclusion and creating an equitable community for every LGBTQ+ resident and each person who calls Orlando home. But our work is far from over. With hateful rhetoric and legislation at the state and national level, our collective unity, love and compassion must remain strong and also grow. I want you and every member of Orlando’s LGBTQ+ community, including the young residents who need support now more than ever, to know that in our city you are loved, you are valued and you are seen and heard. Our community will continue to celebrate our diversity while putting equity and inclusion at the forefront of all that we do. Orlando will still be a place that encourages all residents to be their authentic selves. Our community knows all too well the horrific impact caused by hatred, as this June marks six years since the Pulse tragedy. That’s one of the reasons that as a municipal government the City of Orlando is continuing to take action to help create an inclusive community for all. We’ve added the LGBTQ+ community as a core part of our Community Investment Grant Program, which provides millions of dollars in funding to non-profit groups. We can also play a role in making sure that LGBTQ+ children and families are not isolated, which is why we host the Orlando Youth Empowerment Summit each year with the Zebra Coalition. Together, we are working to ensure that all residents have equitable access to opportunities and that reaching their full potential will not be hindered by who they are or who they love. I truly believe that we will achieve this, especially with your partnership in these efforts. I hope that you have a wonderful time celebrating Pride Month in our community. Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer Mayor ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May 26, 2022

Greetings: It is my pleasure to welcome you to Orange County in celebration of Pride Month! Orange County continues to make bold investments to benefit our more than 1.4 million residents and visitors worldwide. In addition to being known as a top tourist destination in the nation, home to the world’s largest theme parks and an award-winning convention center, we are focused on investing in affordable housing, transportation, public safety, and arts & culture. Likewise, LGBTQ+ businesses and nonprofit organizations have played an integral role in the success of Orange County by investing in resources and people to help grow the next generation of community and civic leaders. As individuals from around the world begin to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June, it is also a time to reflect on the Pulse Remembrance and the responsibility each person has in creating an inclusive and equitable community. Whether you are a life-long resident or a first-time visitor, I hope you enjoy your time in our thriving and diverse community. Once again, welcome, and we look forward to celebrating Pride Month in Orange County! Sincerely,

Jerry L. Demings Orange County Mayor

olly V. Kapherr Alejos is an Orlando-native food and travel writer and restaurant reviewer for local and national

publications, including Watermark. Over the last 15 years she’s seen Central Florida transform from chain restaurant wasteland to an innovative, chef-driven, culinarily conscientious dining destination. In April 2019, Kapherr Alejos launched The Culinati Podcast, where she

interviews chefs, restaurateurs, artisans and other culinarians who are making an impact in the world of gastronomy. She lives in Conway with her husband, along with whatever foster Golden Retriever is in need of some love, and they are expecting their first child in July. night away at one of the many clubs found in

Downtown Orlando and in the surrounding cities and towns or want a chill night catching up with friends in one of the dozens of local bars or restaurants, Central Florida has it all. And what makes the nightlife so spectacular? “It’s the people,” says Justin Shakeri, an Orlando-based actor and entertainer. “When I’m out, all I notice whether it’s a club owner, a promoter, a drag queen, an entertainer, a bartender; every person has a love and passion for what they do.” We asked Shakeri to take us out for a night on the town and tell us some of his favorite nightlife places in Central Florida to go to have a few drinks, meet some new people and to have the time of your life.

entral Florida is in no short supply of fun and exciting things to do, we are the tourist capital of the world after all. With our theme parks, dinner shows and I-Drive attractions, we are renowned for our entertainment but Central Florida is so much more than Mickey Mouse,

Harry Potter and Shamu. We also have some of the best museums, theatres, concert venues and festivals found anywhere.

“Our amazing arts and entertainment have influence from the theme parks but it is also because of how young and diverse Central Florida is. It infuses the area with talent,” says Central Florida performer Brandon Martin. “It’s so exciting to see these smaller theatre companies popping up and trying new and exciting things. Those venues are breathing life into the local theatre scene.” Martin is an Orlando-based vocalist who has performed all throughout Central Florida including with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Walt Disney World, Central Florida Community Arts and the Orlando Gay Chorus, just to name a view. We asked Martin to bestow a bit of his artistic knowledge on us and let our readers know some of his favorite arts and entertainment spots throughout Central Florida.

Pride 365 Central Florida celebrates LGBTQ Pride year-round JEREMY WILLIAMS

I

t wasn’t too long ago that if you wanted to celebrate your LGBTQ Pride, you would have to venture into a major city to be able to watch a parade or walk around a festival, covered in Pride flags and rainbow colors, that was filled with members of our community. Luckily, those times are changing and more and more we

see a celebration of Pride in all the smaller towns and cities in between those metropolises. Not surprising, Orlando has one of the largest LGBTQ Pride celebrations in the state thanks to the city’s large LGBTQ population and the city’s inclusive and accepting nature. What might surprise you is the smaller cities like Kissimmee, Ocala, DeLand and more that are just as inclusive, accepting and showing their LGBTQ Pride. This list is far from complete so be sure to read Watermark’s Tampa Bay and Sarasota Living with Pride guides to see how even more of Central Florida’s cities share their LGBTQ Pride – and watch future issues of Watermark and visit WatermarkOnline.com for the latest details about each outing.

Activist Danielle Olivani worked with members of The Triangle Connection, an LGBTQ nonprofit in Lake County's Golden Triangle community of Mount Dora, Eustis and Tavares, to bring Lake County Pride's first event — a virtual celebration during the COVID-19 pandemic — to the area.

PrideFest Kissimee KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA | KISSIMMEE. ORG PrideFest Kissimmee is an annual event held during May or June at the Kissimmee Civic Center hosted by the city government. First held in 2017, PrideFest is a free event opened to the public and provides food vendors, live entertainment and community resources for its attendees. In 2018, the LGBT+ Center Orlando opened a second location in Kissimmee, located at 21 W. Monument Ave., helping to grow the community’s presence in the city.

entral Florida is home to a large number of LGBTQ nonprofits and organizations — ranging from large coalitions with wide-ranging missions to smaller groups with more focused goals — whose mission it is to make this area one of the most open, accepting and inclusive in the world. Some have been in the

area for decades and some were formed in the wake of one of the worst gun violence tragedies in the country. But the one thing they all have in common is they were all formed because they care about Central Florida's LGBTQ community.
