JOHN WATERS? 5 SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT THE FILMMAKER AND COWP GUEST

O

N TUESDAY, OCT. 1, legendary filmmaker John Waters will perform his live one man show, “This Filthy World” at The Abbey in downtown Orlando. It’s an official Come Out With Pride event and will kick off the Out in the Open Film Festival.

The incredibly popular and iconic director of such films as Hairspray, Pink Flamingos and Cry Baby definitely has a unique take on the world in which we live. But we thought it would be interesting to research Waters and find out exactly what makes him tick. This is what we found:

HE IDOLIZES JOHNNY MATHIS During a 2010 interview with NPR, Waters shared that he admires singer Johnny Mathis—that same singer who’s Christmas album has played at every single one of our grandparents’ homes when we were children. Why does he admire the

Have you ever seen a picture of Johnny Mathis at a world premiere? At a party? He does no promotion whenever he has a big tour—which he does constantly still. I went to them. They’re sold out. He doesn’t try too hard at all. He tries not at all. “I always have to think up new projects, go out on the road: I’m like a carnie, basically. Go sell the work. ... [He] is to me the type of mainstream that I’ll never, ever CONTINUED ON PAGE 23 |  |

STEVE GRAND WILL HELP OPEN COWP 2013

T

HIS YEAR, Come Out With Pride’s opening ceremonies will have the addition of sexy YouTube sensation Steve Grand, who many consider to be the first openly gay country singer.

The Chicago-based singer’s “AllAmerican Boy” caught music fans off guard with it’s catchy country beat and an impressive video that features the chiseled singer’s good looks and impressive voice. Now, Come Out With Pride will present the performer at it’s opening ceremonies on Thursday, Oct. 3, at The Cheyenne on Church Street. We talked with Grand about his newfound fame and what it means to be a gay icon at such a young age—he’s only 23! HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A YOUTUBE SENSATION?

STEVE GRAND: More than anything, I’m just grateful my song has reached so many people so quickly. And reached people that it has meaning for. People that feel the same way I felt and that it resonates with people

emotionally. That’s all I hoped for. That’s all you can hope for as a songwriter, as one who makes music and performs. YOU ARE NOW TOURING PRIDE EVENTS AND PERFORMING FOR AUDIENCES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. DO YOU FEEL PREPARED FOR ALL OF THIS?

I started taking piano when I was six years old. When I was four I started making models of pianos out of cardboard. I was so fascinated even with just the aesthetic of a piano. I was obsessed with Schroeder, [from Peanuts], and his piano. I would go through different phases as a kid, as we all do and I would get obsessed and driven to be creative. Whenever I would get into something CONTINUED ON PAGE 52 |  |

|  | Steve Grand from pg.47 I would want to replicate it, express it in my own way out of cardboard. My parents picked up on it and they got us this old, upright piano and we all started taking lessons. I was the one that was really into it, especially the piano. I took music classes in high school. “ALL-AMERICAN BOY” HAS THE ‘COUNTRY SONG’ LABEL, WHICH PUTS YOU IN DICEY TERRITORY AS AN OUT MUSICIAN.

I never set out to write a country song. I would never dismiss (that) if it sounds like country to some people. That’s fine. At the heart of it, country music is good storytelling and “All-American Boy” is a story. So I think that’s where that comes from. I think also the imagery in the video leads people to give it that title. Even if I am labeled as a country singer, which isn’t a label I gave myself, I certainly wouldn’t want to take away anything from the brave men and women who came before me. DO YOU HAVE MANY OTHER SONGS?

Yes. I’ve been writing since age 11, so I have lots of music that I’ve written. I’ve been recording for a long time, too. I’m always changing my mind and I obsess over certain parts. Sometimes I’ll do a vocal take 300 times, so things take me kind of a while. But I do have a lot of songs recorded. From the response I got here, it’s obviously inspired me and influenced what will come next. WILL WE SOON SEE YOU WITH A RECORD LABEL?

O R L A N D OW E E K LY.CO M

I definitely don’t want to close the door to any opportunities or offers at this point. So I’m keeping an open mind. I believe that we’re in a day and age where we can do it independently. There are pros and cons on both sides. You have to consider who you are as an artist, what you want to be and what kind of impact you want to have.

COUNTRY OR NOT?:

“ALL AMERICAN BOY” HAS BEEN REFERRED TO AS A COUNTRY SONG, BUT STEVE GRAND SAYS HE NEVER INTENDED IT TO BE A COUNTRY HIT, BUT HE’LL GLADLY TAKE THE RECOGNITION. PHOTO COURTESY JOEM C. BAYAWA

HOW PERSONAL, REALLY, IS THE STORYLINE OF “ALL-AMERICAN BOY?”

crazy. It’s a part of life. Unless you’re in a world that’s exclusively gay, which I think few of us are, it’s going to happen. I think there’s a great We’ve all been there, and I mean gay, straight, power in being able to express it. I needed to bi, whoever you are. We’ve all fallen for get the song off my chest someone that we can’t have, I feel like that’s but it especially rings true in “It is the story of my because how I reconciled how I felt. the specific story for LGBT life since I was 13; people. It is the story of my WHAT IS THE NEXT life since I was 13. I was always I was always STEP FOR YOU crushing on the straight guy. crushing on the PROFESSIONALLY? The song isn’t about anyone specific. It’s the accumulation I’m trying to build a team straight guy.” of experiences. I definitely now because this is a little knew the story and as far as bigger than one or two —STEVE GRAND ON the video goes, I had a very “ALL AMERICAN BOY” people can handle. I’m particular vision in mind. I think putting together a team all that was influenced by everything I’ve been a of people who know, respect and can see through, growing up and having this happen my vision and can help point me in the right to me over and over again. direction so that I’m staying true to myself and true to my art. FABULOUS MARTHA WASH BRINGS HER DANCE HITS TO COWP’S BLOCK PARTY

M

ARTHA WASH is responsible for some of the top-selling, most recognizable pop hits of the 1980s and 1990s. “It’s Raining Men”, the cult pop classic, is still heard everywhere… the radio, movies, commercials, TV and, of course, at LGBT Pride celebrations around the world.

“The Original Weather Girl” returns to Orlando to celebrate pride as the headliner of the official Come Out With Pride Outdoor Block Party at Church Street Station. The fun begins at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in front of Hamburger Mary’s. While most LGBTs know Wash for her “It’s Raining Men” mega-hit, she’s also responsible for “Sweat (Everybody Dance Now),” the highlight of C&C Music Factory’s career, and three Top 40 hits including “Strike It Up”, a single that continues to receive massive airplay and is still heard at every NFL and NBA game everywhere. Wash will be joined by Amy and Freddy, The Broadway Babes and DJ Bill Bennett and DJ Cap’n Kirk at the massive,

free, block party. Wash’s career has spanned more than three decades, and she’s continues to work hard in the music industry. Her new album, Something Good is an empowering collection of eight songs. She also remains committed to LGBT causes through her work with the “You Can Play Project, dedicated to ensuring respect and safety for all athletes, regardless of their sexual orientation. It’s that optimism that makes her such an icon, especially among LGBTs. “Whatever song [my fans] listen to,” says Wash, “I hope they get something positive out of it. I want them to think about themselves, and about helping others.”
