A single moment can change everything.

A simple ceremony. An approved adoption. A plan for retirement. These personal victories have a huge impact on our collective community. Each step toward equality, every milestone reached, is a big leap forward for all of us. However, we know there is still work to do. That’s why Wells Fargo teams up with HRC, GLSEN, NGLCC and other organizations to provide resources and financial guidance to LGBT communities. And as the first to offer financial advisors with the Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor℠ designation, we are well versed on current laws to help you develop a solid plan for the future. Together, we move forward. Step by step, with individuals, in communities — we can make what once seemed impossible a reality. wellsfargo.com/lgbt

BECAUSE I AM THE CHANGE!

Six

years ago, I had the privilege to join the Come Out With Pride production team. I embarked on a mission to be part of the change and to enlist hundreds, thousands more with the same focus and the same enthusiasm. Today, over 120,000 people are the change. They celebrate their authenticity, their equality, their fights, their proud selves and most importantly, the accomplishments of an entire community to achieve the dream and the vision Harvey Milk had for all of us. By celebrating, they encourage others to do the same, to not be afraid and to aspire to living a true authentic life. I have been surrounded by individuals who are putting hard work, energy, soul and passion into the making of what has become a week-long event. I am thankful for their friendship and their labor. When you see a COWP team member on Saturday Oct, 11, please thank them, for they are the change.

While we may be celebrating 10 years of Come Out With Pride, being Proud in Orlando started long before that. Decades ago, pioneers started a movement that would pave the way to living in a city that treats all its citizens equally, that provides all its citizens the same rights, the same opportunities and the same chance at happiness. To these pioneers, we salute you, because you are the change! The GLBT History Museum has important information related to our history in Central Florida and I encourage everyone to learn more about these pioneers. This year, the 10th anniversary of Come Out With Pride Orlando falls on Oct. 11—National Coming Out Day! We’ve partnered with the Orange County History Museum to gather, collect and save a piece of our history and you can submit a piece of that history to our time capsule. Visit ComeOutWithPride.

“By celebrating, they encourage others to do the same, to not be afraid and to aspire to living a true authentic life.” com/TimeCapsule for more information. In 2014, we have seen a tremendous move towards embracing marriage equality by allies and elected officials. This surge was achieved through conversations, discussions and a true understanding as to what may keep individuals from truly embracing equality and diversity. Let’s engage or reengage in conversation to, once again, be the change! As we celebrate together on this 10th anniversary, I leave you with an important thought that is a principle I live by, one that has made a huge difference in my life: Be a positive role model to the next generations. Embrace diversity, not just of sexual orientation but of thoughts, #IAMPRIDE

education, beliefs. Pursue change with passion but also with understanding and an open mind. Our nation and our World is better off when we all appreciate the differences that make working and living with each other so much more interesting. Never let yourself be discouraged by setbacks for these should only strengthen your resolve in reaching for the sky, and be the change!

CELEBRATING ITS

BUILDING ON THE FRAMEWORK OF ITS PREDECESSORS,

COWP HAS CONTINUALLY GROWN IN 10 YEARS This

year marks 10 years of Come Out With Pride in Orlando. It’s a significant anniversary that appropriately coincides with National Coming Out Day.

As Orlando—and all of Central Florida—celebrates this milestone, it’s important to remember that Pride didn’t begin with Come Out With Pride. In fact, Orlando has a long history of celebrating the LGBT community. Back in the 1990s, which may seem like a distant memory to many, locals had to battle just for the right to display

rainbow flags in the City of Orlando. It’s those pioneers who laid the groundwork for what would evolve into Come Out With Pride. As a new generation arrived in Orlando, it took the experience of long time residents and mixed it with the renewed energy flooding into central Florida. In July of 2005 the Metropolitan #IAMPRIDE

Business Association and the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Student Union of the University of Central Florida held an open meeting at the Footlight Theater housed within the Parliament House. There, volunteers were recruited to create a new Orlando Pride event to coincide with National Coming Out Day. The rest, as they say, is history: CONTINUED ON PG. 20 |  |

|  | 10 Years of COWP FROM PG.17

ON OCT. 9, 2005, the very first Come Out With Pride brought 10,000 people to downtown Orlando and kicked off with a champagne brunch followed by a festival and 3 p.m. parade beginning on Summerlin. American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson celebrated diversity with us that year and for the first time, Orlando saw a onehundred-foot Pride flag in its parade.

ON SUNDAY, OCT. 15, 2006, Come Out With Pride returned to Heritage Square in front of the Orange County History Center. This time, however, COWP extended beyond a one-day event and incorporated the first-ever opening party the previous Thursday at the Veranda. In its sophomore year, COWP incorporated its first grand marshal in 2006 when actor and activist Jim J. Bullock was named to the role. Attendance that year steadily rose to 15,000.

IN 2007, with the help of the City of Orlando, Come Out With Pride relocated to Lake Eola Park in anticipation of a larger crowd. Organizers were not disappointed—attendance doubled from the previous year to 30,000! The picturesque setting remains the site of the festival and new presenting sponsors Universal Resort and Bright House Entertainment helped make the event bigger and better than ever. On top of that, Broadway legend Jennifer Holiday headlined a Salute to Broadway at the Disney Amphitheater. While the new setting brought new challenges to volunteers and organizers—it incorporated more tents, a larger beer garden and more barricades— year three was a shift in COWP’s history, since it’s new home encouraged the phenomenal growth that continues today.

ON SUNDAY, OCT. 12, 2008 a more serious message was sent out from the amphitheater. An awareness of LGBT hate crimes and a tribute to local and national victims of anti-LGBT violence was held in a solemn ceremony that reminded us that we still had a long way to go to reach full equality in our own state and in our own country. But it wasn’t all serious in year four. Kristine W joined with Lisa Lisa to headline at the amphitheater and The City of Orlando continued its sponsorship of the growing festival, which swelled to 45,000 attendees that year.

IN 2009, Come Out With Pride coincided with National Coming Out Day for the first time. An opening ceremony the preceding Thursday featured grand marshal Stuart Milk. Milk, the nephew of the now infamous slain politician Harvey Milk of San Francisco, spoke about the importance of Pride events like Come Out With Pride. He said they save lives and give a sense of belonging to LGBTs, especially the younger generation. During the festival and from the amphitheater stage, headliner Ari Gold brought out the dancers among us and the crowd grew again, this time reaching 60,000 attendees in year five.

ON OCT. 10, 2010— 10-10-10—Come Out With Pride presented a huge theme with a huge name attached to it. A celebration of the Olympics seemed appropriate when Olympic gold medalist diver Greg Louganis was selected as the sixth year’s grand marshal. He was joined by Olympic bronze-medalist diver Mary-Ellen Clark. Once again, an opening ceremony kicked off the weekend celebration on Thursday and featured disco diva Martha Wash (“It’s Raining Men”) and Brian Kent (“Whatcha Doin’ to Me?). This year the parade was full of iconic and Olympian-inspired floats that traveled all the way around Lake Eola Park. The expanded route accommodated the 75,000 spectators and participants.

COME OUT WITH PRIDE 2O14 20 #IAMPRIDE

THE YEAR THAT WAS 2011 is remembered as one of the most difficult for Come Out With Pride. The weekend started off strong with an “Out is the New In” fashion theme that saw a fashion show at the Abbey during the Thursday night opening party. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans when a torrential downpour on Oct. 8—the scheduled day of the festival and parade—forced organizers to cancel the celebration. Depression set in, sure, but it was followed by a willingness to celebrate Pride, no matter the setbacks. Local businesses, sponsors and the City of Orlando helped resurrect Come Out With Pride a month later, and grand marshal Jonathan D. Lovitz of LOGO TV welcomed attendees on Nov. 20. Watermark Media was that year’s presenting sponsor and for the first time, the festival incorporated

were presented to accompany the global theme and international performers from the Orlando Fringe Festival entertained the crowd from the stage. The big draw was grand marshal Debbie Gibson, who performed at the Parliament House following the festival. Fireworks were again launched over Lake Eola to close the event, which—for the first time—broke the 100,000 mark.

ON OCT. 5, 2013, Come Out With Pride had a lot to celebrate. Just months earlier, the United States Supreme Court declared unconstitutional the portion of the Defense of Marriage Act prohibiting the federal recognition of same-sex marriages. Since then, marriage equality bans have fallen in states across the country as judges repeatedly find them

“Stuart Milk said Pride events save lives and give a sense of belonging to LGBTs, especially the younger generation.” a fantastic fireworks display over the lake while the colorful fountain was synched with inspirational music. Watermark estimated 85,000 attended the rescheduled, much drier, celebration.

ON SATURDAY, OCT. 6, 2012, Come Out With Pride took on the world— at least with its theme. “A World of Pride” encouraged parade participants to decorate floats with a global message of equality. The eighth year also added two new areas to the expanding festival—a fourth vendor area was incorporated near Robinson Street and the International Plaza on Central was transformed into a world showcase of international food and drink specials. Pride festivals from around the world #IAMPRIDE

unconstitutional based on that historic ruling. Locally, the LGBT community celebrated a citywide and county-wide domestic partnership registry, which added even more fuel to the festival’s 9th showcase. The opening celebration and block party was held at the Cheyenne Saloon and featured Steve Grand, who many hail as the first openly gay country artist. Grand, who launched to stardom thanks to his YouTube channel, returned during the festival on Saturday and performed at the Bandshell. His set included his hit “All American Boy.” Macy’s returned as the presenting sponsor and the official COWP guide featured local, out elected officials Patty Sheehan and Joe Saunders. It’s no wonder attendance again swelled— this time to an estimated 120,000. 21 COME OUT WITH PRIDE 2O14

AUSTRALIA’S SINGING TWINS BEC & SEBASTIAN PREP FOR COWP

When

Melbourne twins Bec and Sebastian Ivonov were picked to join Team Ricky Martin in Season 2 of Australia’s ‘The Voice,’ their ultimate goal was to win, of course. But even after they were eliminated in the Battle Round, they gained recognition and street cred as musicians and artists. It was just another thing they shared together.

The 30-year-olds have always shared everything. They shared a womb, they shared their coming out experience and now they’ll share their inaugural trip to Florida in October. Bec and Sebastian will appear at Come Out With Pride

during their first-ever trip to the Sunshine State. “I came to the U.S. a couple of years ago with an ex-girlfriend,” Bec recalls. “We hit San Fran, Vegas, New York and LA. But I’ve not been to Florida.” Sebastian admits

information on Florida is from what he’s seen on television. “All I know about Florida is what I’ve seen about Miami,” Sebastian says. “But since we got booked I’ve been looking into it and learning more.” While the twins are coming specifically for COWP in Orlando, they plan to see more of the state, and the country, while here. “We’ll be in Florida for a week,” Bec explains. “Miami, Disney World—I CONTINUED ON PG. 45 |  |

SAFE AND SOUND CAPITAL CITIES WILL HEADLINE THE OFFICIAL OCT. 9 KICK-OFF TO COWP

“Safe

and Sound” is a platinum hit, and the song has catapulted Capital Cities into the everyday lexicon of American music lovers. Now, Floridians will get a chance to hear the song—and many more—for themselves when Capital Cities headlines the Opening Ceremony event at Heritage Square on Thursday, Oct. 9

Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian met initially on Craigslist in 2008 and worked as jingle writers until they formed Capital Cities in 2010. Their popular track spread like crazy over the Internet until it got airtime on an independent station in Peru. That motivated the Los Angeles

residents to begin a crusade to get it on American radio waves, and in no-time, the song was a mega hit. Now, thanks with a partnership with XL 106.7, Capital Cities will help open this year’s Come Out With Pride following the traditional opening ceremonies. The three-hour #IAMPRIDE 51

concert begins at 10 p.m. Heritage Square is at the Orange County History Center on East Central Boulevard in downtown Orlando. Admission to the concert is free with an Opening Ceremony VIP ticket, or $19 if purchased before Oct. 1. After that date, tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. For $105, see the show from the front row and attend a meet and greet that includes a picture with the band. Get details at ComeOutWithPride.com.
