T’S IMPOSSIBLE TO SUM UP THE CAREER OF LILY TOMLIN ON THESE PAGES, but her name recognition alone among her fans—especially the LGBT community—brings packed venues wherever she goes. But don’t miss the opportunity to see her live on Feb. 5 at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach. Tomlin, one of America’s foremost comediennes, has crossed over into every form of media—whether it be television and films to animation and online videos. Her work has garnered numerous awards, including six Emmys, a Tony for her one woman show Appearing Nitely, and another one for Best Actress in The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe and even the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Of course what our readers love about Tomlin, besides her fantastic stand up, is that she and her long-time partner/ manager came out together several years ago. Her long career spans decades, and she continues to change hearts and minds when it comes to LGBT issues—all while using humor to do so. Last year, Tomlin starred in the ABC sitcom Malibu Country alongside Reba, and in the 1990s, she was a staple in The West Wing. But this tour is a return to her comedy roots on the stage, and you can expect some old characters to make appearances as well as her fresh take on the world in which we now live. The Book of Mormon

FTER SPENDING SEVEN YEARS IN DEVELOPMENT, The Book of Mormon opened on Broadway in 2011 to rave reviews. The religious satire musical was born of the minds of South Park creators Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez. The musical lampoons organized religion and even takes a few stabs at the ongoing battle among religious organizations and homosexuality. The story of two young Mormon missionaries winds its way to Uganda, where they must spread their gospel in a war torn land. The two naive leads share their scriptures through music and hilariously have trouble connecting with the locals, who are more worried about poverty, famine, war and the rampant spread of AIDS. This musical is not for the easily offended. In fact, in true South Park style, the script and the music does not shy away from blasphemy, which is blatantly pushed forward but also hilarious. The Broadway play won a Grammy Award for the Best Musical Theater Album and a number of Tony Awards, including Best Musical! It’s success led to its Original Broadway Cast Recording album to become the highest-charting album of its kind on Billboard in four decades. It reached No. 3. The traveling production stops at the Bob Carr Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando Oct. 29-Nov. 10 and at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa Nov. 12-24. So there are plenty of opportunities to catch this must-see show. OCT. 29-NOV. 10, BOB CARR CENTER, ORLANDO NOV. 12-24, STRAZ CENTER, TAMPA

VER SINCE SHE CAPTURED HEARTS AS THE LEAD SINGER OF THE SUPREMES, LGBT fans have flocked to concerts headlined by Diana Ross. The legendary Motown icon is still touring and, in 2013, will make three stops in our area— at the Hard Rock Orlando on Sept. 3, The Mahaffey Theatre in St. Petersburg on Sept. 10, and the VanWezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota on Sept. 11. During the 1960s, Ross shaped the sounds of Motown before beginning her solo career in 1970. Since that time she has sold well over 100 million records and has won countless awards and nominations for both her music and her acting. Of course, Ross has been parodied and immortalized in a number of ways, but female impersonators around the globe have lip synced to her familiar songs thousands and thousands of times, and continue to do so today. Ross was the first female solo artist to score six number one hits and she is also one of the few recording artists to have a star placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Expect a packed house when Ross takes the stages in Florida, and don’t be surprised if at least half of the audience is fellow members of the LGBT community. Her activism and support for equality continue to make her a favorite among us. SEPT. 3, HARD ROCK LIVE, ORLANDO SEPT. 10, MAHAFFEY THEATRE, ST. PETERSBURG SEPT. 11, VAN WEZEL, SARASOTA

Russell Brand

Watermark’s Fall Arts Guide 2013

ARLIER THIS YEAR, RUSSELL BRAND EARNED HIMSELF LEGIONS OF LGBT FANS when a YouTube video of him arguing in favor of marriage equality went viral. Now, the former Mr. Katy Perry is touring with his new show, Messiah Complex, and he’s stopping at Tampa’s Straz Center for the Performing Arts on Sept. 20 and the Hard Rock Live in Orlando on Sept. 21. The English comedian is a star of stage and film—and impersonation. His show promises to feature appearances by Jesus Christ, Che Guevara, Gandi, Malcolm X and Hitler. So we can only imagine what kind of hilarious (and offensive) things will come out of the unpredictable actor’s mouth when he’s on the stage. Brand burst onto the US Pop culture scene in 2008 after his major role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. That film led to his role in Get Him to the Greek two years later. He has since appeared in several animated films like Despicable Me and Hop. He also starred in the 2011 remake of Arthur. His ongoing support for marriage equality has led to some heated debates on talk shows, and he consistently says it’s stupid to “legislate bigotry” when referring to anti-marriage equality ballot measures. Brand’s humor is brash, but his popularity will no doubt keep both the Straz Center and Hard Rock Live full this fall. SEPT. 20, STRAZ CENTER, TAMPA SEPT. 21, HARD ROCK LIVE, ORLANDO
