Tampa Pride president Carrie West couldn’t be happier about Tampa Pride 2017.

I

BY BILLY MANES

T TAKES A LOT TO MAKE A PRIDE EVENT HAPPEN, and Carrie West, one-half of the popular Dishing with Mark and Carrie email blast, while not playing his presidential role for Tampa Pride, has a hot bunch of dish to talk about with all the work he’s doing. Circling around the main festival and parade on March 25 in the GaYBOR district are numerous affairs, displays and honors for those who do their best to make the rest of us proud. Now, that kind of pride is more important than ever, he says. “I think that we’ve maybe lived on easy street for a while, but now it’s not going to be that easy,” West says. Pride, if nothing else, has traditionally been a celebration of blissful extremes, but in its third year of its current iteration, Tampa Pride is adding some teeth to that lipstick message, and doing so by honoring those who got us this far. (There will be lipstick, there, though; just ask co-grand-marshal Joey Brooks.)

“I think we have some great people lined up. We’ve got former Hillsborough County commissioner Kevin Beckner, we’ve got local entertainer Joey Brooks – she’s kind of a main stage act, starting with Tracks and moving through the Pleasurdome and different clubs in Ybor and all around Tampa, even in St. Petersburg. Those are our grand marshals.” This year’s theme is, appropriately, “Community Superheroes,” so everyone from the drag of municipal governance to the more exciting drag of nightlife will be present. “I think it’s kind of a celebration and an honor. That’s what we’re going to do,” West says. “For example, in honoring Sandy Freedman, former mayor of Tampa: That was when they had the Gay Men’s Chorus coming into the convention and Hillsborough County said, ‘No, we’re not going to accept sexual orientation and put it into our law and CONTINUED ON PG. 9 |  |

into our charter.” And then she went over there and the leaders of the gay choruses came through there and she said, ‘I want you to come to Tampa. Wholeheartedly Tampa wants you. There are some government restrictions from Hillsborough County but not in Tampa.’ And I thought they did an excellent job in making that happen. That was the largest convention in, I believe, 15 years, the Gay Chorus Convention. In honoring that system and those who assisted.” In addition, former county administrator and city manager for Ybor City Development Corporation Vince Pardo will get a nod for all he did in making Ybor inclusive as the community grew into its current fabulous stature. Tampa Pride will likewise be honoring Hotspots Media publisher Peter Clark and his partner of 30 years Cleto Beuren as “Grand Couple.” But there are other tie-ins that don’t involve honoring individuals so much as they honor the masses. “The ‘It Gets Better’ campaign is coming to Tampa for the whole week, and then they’re going to act out the whole stories of people from Tampa Bay sitting out the round table talking about their experiences coming out, good and bad. And also the experiences they kind of live through day by day. That’s going to be a performance; it’s all done up at Straz Performing Arts Center.” Additionally, an LGBTQ history exhibit of Tampa Bay’s gay past will be held at the Dali Museum and the “Special Tribute to Community Super Heroes Celebration” is scheduled for noon on 7th Avenue on parade day, and will include 100 feet of the Key West historical eight-color rainbow flag. So an honor it shall be. “These are things that a lot of the new generation, people who have just moved to the area: That some of the people don’t realize have made things happen,” West says.

Former Hillsborough Commissioner Kevin Beckner reflects on a job well done and a future waiting to be made.

E

BY BILLY MANES

VERYBODY KNOWS KEVIN BECKNER. The dashing former Hillsborough County commissioner, the county’s first gay commissioner, has been an ally to the LGBTQ community (he is part of that community, after all), but he’s also been a progressive force during his tenure, keeping his eyes open for all of the voiceless in search of a voice. This year, he is one of the grand marshals in the third year of Tampa Pride’s reinvention. He also still cares about keeping people like him in office. We caught up with Beckner to talk pride and politics.

WATERMARK: WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT BEING NAMED A GRAND MARSHAL FOR TAMPA PRIDE GIVEN YOUR RECENT CHANGE IN POSITION? KEVIN BECKNER: It’s a great honor and a privilege to be able to serve as a Grand Marshal and I give a lot of credit and kudos to the organizers of Pride that have made this such a great event. You know, Pride has been such a long time coming and emerging in the Tampa area, and to be able to be part of the third-year celebration, it’s a real honor. I’ve been in Hillsborough County since 1999.

WELL THAT’S ALMOST TWO DECADES OF TRANSFORMATION. WHAT STANDS OUT MOST FOR YOU? It’s been a rollercoaster ride. You know, when I got here in ’99, coming from Chicago where people would get up at 6 a.m. and you’d have a half-a-million people lining the streets, so when I moved to the Tampa area, Pride seemed to be a lot less organized. Organizations come and they go, and of course as a community, we’ve had quite a rollercoaster ride as far as LGBTQ rights. We CONTINUED ON PG. 16 |  |

|  | Kevin Beckner FROM PG.13 have a county commission ban the Pride in 2005 and then elect its first openly gay official in 2008. From there make a lot of progressions to ultimately lead up to the time today where we have full equality in Hillsborough County. We have a Human Rights Ordinance, we have a countywide domestic partnership registry and county employees have rights to comprehensive healthcare benefits. So we’ve made a lot of progress. I think Pride today is really a reflection of all the accomplishments that we have made. But I think it’s also important to remember that we also have a long, long way to go, and we can’t forget the journey that we’ve been on and take for granted the rights that we’ve worked so hard to achieve. SO WHOSE IS BIGGER – SPEAKING OF EQUALITY – HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY’S OR PINELLAS COUNTY’S? There certainly are some differences there, but I would really focus on the commonalities that we have. The people, as a whole, in both Hillsborough and Pinellas, I think are very similar in the fact that they value the diversity that exists within our community. Sometimes the way government and elected officials have treated the LGBTQ community has differed in both counties, but you’re really starting to see that both are becoming kind of equal as far as human rights go. I think the largest difference has been in some of the people who have been elected in office. On both sides of the bay, now you have, at least for now, a much more moderate government. IT DOESN’T SEEM LIKE YOU’RE FOCUSED EXCLUSIVELY ON LGBTQ ISSUES, THOUGH. I MEAN, GOVERNMENT DOESN’T START OR END IN THE BEDROOM OR BATHROOM, REALLY. My priorities when I was on the commission were to recognize the vast needs of our community, from making sure that all of our youth have an opportunity for success through economic development, working

16

on transit issues, and of course recognizing that we did have a lot of catching up to do as rights go. It certainly was not a singular focus for me. SO WHAT DO YOU DO NOW, MISTER, AFTER LEAVING THE PRESSURE COOKER OF COMMUNITY CONCERNS? I am working right now on actually getting some respite. So I’m reflecting upon what I’ve done in the past and also reflecting upon how I can serve this community in the future. Whether it’s in the private or the public sector, that hasn’t been determined just yet. Right now, we’re just really getting some respite, catching up on some time with my spouse and then really focusing on the path moving forward. ARE YOU DONE WITH PUBLIC POLITICS? One of my priorities is to help people that run for public office, help recruit them and get good people in public office, because I think as we’ve seen unfold from the last election until now is that we’ve made a lot of progress, but we still have a lot of work to do. And we can’t take for granted all the rights that we have achieved. In fact, if you look at our structure of our highest elected official, there are many that are in power who have the ability to roll back those rights. We as a community have to remain vigilant that everybody under the rule of law has the opportunity for success, and to be treated fairly with dignity and respect. I think it’s a wake-up call for many people realizing that some rights that are in our democracy are at risk right now. IS PRIDE VALUABLE IF ONLY BECAUSE OF THAT? Absolutlely. Not only the Pride parade, but the Martin Luther King parade, I think any of these types of events that help bring people together, help unify, we need that in our community as much as ever right now. There is so much division in our community right now. We need a bench and we need to be able to bring people together to help us express our unity. The Pride parade and the various cultural events help us do that.

Happy Pride!

Good Luck to Tampa Pride!

Crossover LGBTQ artist Steve Grand comes to Tampa Pride with a “new era” in his All-American life.

D

BY BILLY MANES

O YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME? Breakout artist Steve Grand stunned the world by eschewing expectations and playing the shirtless country-pop gay artist who won millions of YouTube – and real – fans. These days, Grand is working on new music while working the industry circuit in advance of his surprise performance at Tampa Pride. He called. We answered. WATERMARK: SO, WAIT, YOU’RE FLYING OUT TO SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA? HOW BIG OF A DEAL ARE YOU! STEVE GRAND: I’m going to be in the parade, and I just have to say that Sydney is one of my favorite places. I think the men there have the sexiest accents in the world. I’ll be in the parade; I think I’m riding in the back of a car. I don’t know exactly what I’ll be wearing or doing. But then I’ll be performing at 4 a.m. March 4 for the main event. We made a mashup of two of my songs: “We Are the Night” and “Soaking Wet.” For the first time ever, we have backup dancers. TELL ME ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE MUSIC IS SOUNDING LIKE NOW? ARE WE STICKING WITH THE “ALL-AMERICAN” POP COUNTRY?

I’m proud of the way that I’ve grown; I’ve become much more confident as a man and a gay man. I’ve become an adult in the years since I first broke out onto the scene and started this very wild journey. So much has happened in my life: so many good things and so many bad things, not just to me, but because of me. … I think this record is about where I’m at in my life now, and I’m able to see the things that happened in the last few years of my life much more clearly. … You can get so bogged down in regret, so quickly. As an adult, it was something that was never really taught me, but you really have to learn to let go. IT’S GOT TO BE TOUGH TO GET THE FALSE INFLATION OF EGO, THOUGH I NEVER SAW THAT IN YOUR LAST CAMPAIGN. Those are things that are typical of early-twentysomethings. CONTINUED ON PG. 22 |  |

I guess I’ve grown up a lot, and that is hopefully going to be evident on the record.

Happy Pride!

|  | Steve Grand FROM PG.19 There’s a certain level of activity that’s totally acceptable and the norm, but there’s a certain notoriety and attention that’s just kind of hard to navigate through understanding that what you are professionally is certainly different from who you are on the inside. It sometimes can get confusing. DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU OVER-SEXUALIZED YOURSELF FROM THE BEGINNING, THOUGH?

TAMPA PRIDE 2017 SATURDAY, MARCH 25

.org

22

I felt it was cool, and you get so egged on to take off your shirt, I know that I’m a sexual being, and I know that there’s a time and place for it. It would get confusing for me when people would struggle to see nuance. Just because I’m a person who doesn’t mind being photographed shirtless, For better or for worse, people have all kinds of reactions to that. People say you’re a hypocrite because you complained about being objectified, which I’ve never complained about being objectified. But, you know what, I learned to let that go. You learn to get really grounded and people aren’t always going to understand you. Sometimes I like to flaunt my body; other times I want to cry at the piano. WHEN YOU THINK OF PRIDE PARADES, DO YOU THINK THAT THEY ARE STILL SERVING A PURPOSE IN THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY? Absolutely. I think it’s different for a couple of different reasons and it is maximum exposure. I think about people coming in from the suburbs and into the city. Gay people are everywhere; and not just gay people, but LGBTQ people. Also, I think it’s important our community. We’ve covered so much ground and we’ve gotten so many great things like marriage equality and federal protections, so I think it’s gone really well for the gay community. I think Pride brings us out to remind us that we really all there for each other.

Kenya M. Black ascends to Tampa Pride’s most glamorous throne.

I

N LATE JANUARY, LEGENDARY PERFORMER KENYA M. BLACK made all the Sunday noise by becoming Miss Tampa Pride at an event at the Honey Pot. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Miss Tampa Pride 2017, Kenya M. Black.

WATERMARK: SO TELL ME A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON YOURSELF IN THE COMMUNITY? KENYA: I have been living in Tampa for about a year now. I moved here to work for Hamburger Marys. WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE TO RECEIVE THE HONOR OF MISS TAMPA PRIDE? It is an honor to be crowned Miss Tampa Pride. I started doing pageants a couple of years ago and didn’t think I would have this

accomplishment this soon in my career. DO YOU THINK PRIDE PARADES ARE MORE IMPORTANT NOW THAN EVER GIVEN THE TONE OF THE POLITICAL DISCOURSE AND THE TRAGEDY OF PULSE? I feel pride parades are important period. With or without the political views or tragedies, it’s a way of expressing ourselves in the for front and celebrating who we are. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU AT PRIDE, WHEN AND WHERE? OR WILL YOU JUST BE FABULOUS EVERYWHERE? At Pride you can expect from me FUN and a lot of costume changes. As of now, I know that I will be in the parade. I’m working out bookings around Tampa for that day as we speak.

Here’s your go-to guide for how to get around Tampa Pride

I

BY BILLY MANES

T’S HERE! IT’S REALLY HAPPENING! There are a lot of deserved exclamation points joining in! As you’ve already sussed out, this year’s grand marshals for the March 25 fair of fabulousness are former Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner and local activist and big-haired entertainer Joey Brooks. So it’s kind of an odd couple, but what kind of hilarity would ensue without a diverse pairing? You probably already know, as well, that former Tampa Mayor Sandy Freedman and former Ybor City developer and, well, activist in his own right Vince Pardo will be honored as “Community Recognized LGBTA Leaders,” both with good reason. And in this third year of the Tampa Pride reboot, we also get a “Grand Couple” in the form of Hotspots Media publisher Peter Clark and his partner of 30 years Cleto Beuren. But so is a lot of other noise, which is why Tampa Pride is calling on its superheroes to combat the negativity with the might of the universe, tights included! Or, Tampa Pride is putting on another successful festival with tens of thousands showing their supportl.

FESTIVAL OPENING 9:45 A.M. Nothing screams 9:45 a.m. quite like a marching band, and this year Tampa Pride welcomes the Tampa Bay Pride Marching Band to get your Sousa-like craziness kicked correctly in. It’s a little early, but you’re in this for the long haul.

FESTIVAL EXPO 10 A.M.-5:15 P.M. This is your catch-all, but it shouldn’t be dismissed

30

as such. Tampa has a wide variety of vendors and LGBTQ supporters. Look no further than Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, who will kick off festivities with a number of local community leaders and people of interest.

TAMPA PRIDE TRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY 12 P.M. Grab some tissues and some righteous indignation for this portion of the day’s

proceedings. There will be a presentation of 100-foot eight-color Key West Rainbow Pride Flag along with another visit from the 76 trombones (OK, probably an overstatement) of the Tampa Bay Pride Marching Band. Also, expect a presentation involving Orlando Pulse massacre victims, first responders and Pulse owner Barbara Poma.

TAMPA PRIDE DIVERSITY PARADE 1 P.M. The parade runs on 7th Avenue from Nuccio Boulevard to 20th Street. It will be amazing and there will be beads.

STEVE GRAND CONCERT 4 P.M. Dreamboat and All-American beefcake songwriter Steve Grand will perform on the main stage at the HCC parking lot. You should bring some cold water to make sure that you don’t get too worked up.

RANDY RAINBOW ALL DAY! As if you needed more excitement, Svedka Vodka is bringing the hilarious Randy Rainbow to the Honey Pot for a day of hilarious mingle-festing and commentary. Nothing like a rainbow to end an LGBTQ party!
