GREAT NEWS, EVERYBODY! IT’S PRIDE SEASON AGAIN AND TAMPA PRIDE 2022 IS HERE!

W

Carrie West, Tampa Pride President

MARCH 26, 2022

Have a Great TAMPA PRIDE 2022,

TAMPA PRIDE 2022

E ARE PROUD to be in our eighth year – an exciting and (not COVID) positive year with so many great things happening. 2021 had us in a flurry of on-and-off again events, but Tampa Bay was on fire with winning TAMPA teams. The Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and of course: TAMPA PRIDE 2021. WE ARE PROUD! What did TAMPA PRIDE 2021 accomplish? We were the first Pride parade in the U.S. since the COVID pandemic. The first! Our TAMPA PRIDE opening event included a major announcement that brought a billion-dollar corporation’s entry into the Florida marketplace on the TAMPA PRIDE 2021 courtyard stage: KROGER FOODS. The event featured a large amount of dignitaries, vice presidents and management, 23 Kroger food trucks and the national press. WE ARE PROUD! We also welcomed a TAMPA PRIDE volunteer Pride staff of more than 40 people planning, working and preparing for over nine months for this Pride event. We hoped 60,000 fun attendees would come to celebrate life, but then more than 80,000 people from around the country show up! Medical tents, workers, hospitals and clinics all help make Pride celebrations across the world tick and Tampa Pride was no exception. Thankfully there were no major medical incidents that occurred! Our staff also arranged the Diversity Parade line-up with 155 units – floats, grand marshals, political leaders, community walking groups, religious groups, corporate floats, many high school marching bands and more. Later we welcomed musical divas Martha Wash and Pepper MaShay, who were joined by 60 talented local entertainers on two

stages for our first Pride at Night Party. There were early mornings, long days and late nights, but we found new friends and what’s more, new family. Then came a slow down of weekly committee meetings and daily late-night calls. We took a deep, relaxing breath and added ideas for the next year. WE ARE PROUD! With new calls to action, events were planned and tackled by new talents that wanted to step up to the Pride plate. We had talked about PRIDE ON THE RIVER in the Spring and it happened in September! A first in the U.S., we hosted a Diversity Boat Parade & Festival, with great divas from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” filling Armature Works and much more. Now we’re looking forward to our second annual Diversity Boat Parade Celebration at the end of September 2022. WE ARE PROUD! TAMPA PRIDE is always innovative, which is why we launched the TAMPA PRIDE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND. It’s now offering funds to community service-focused students so that they can further a portion of their ongoing education. Corporations, businesses, individuals and organizations can help make this fund grow! Just contact me at C.West@TampaPride.org for more information about how your group can get involved. We want to move the LGBTAQ family forward. Please stand up and do your part to be safe and help make yourself the leader that you really are. YOU ARE PROUD!

2022 Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to recognize the 2022 Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade, family-friendly extravaganzas that celebrate Hillsborough County’s LGBTAQ diversity, inclusiveness, and love of all people. Now in its eighth year, the Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade are for the entire Hillsborough County community. Held in historic Ybor City, these vibrant events, to take place on March 26, will double the fun for everyone, from morning through night. The Diversity Parade, with numerous colorful and creatively decorated floats, walking groups, and vehicles, will wind along Ybor City’s major thoroughfares. The Street Festival will feature the Tampa Bay Pride Band, a wide variety of vendors, an Artisan & Crafts Show, Community Health Fair, Food Truck Alley, and Tampa Pride at Night festivities, including a celebrity concert. In 2021, the Tampa Pride Parade was the first in the United States since the COVID pandemic began, the only such parade in Tampa, and it was nationally televised. Last year’s events drew national media for the announcement that a multibillion-dollar corporation, Kroger Foods, was moving to Florida. These prestigious events, which last year attracted 80,000 attendees from around the country for fun in a safe environment, get bigger and better each year. The Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade proudly promote the county’s diversity, and are sources of great community pride.

T

TAMPA PRIDE 2022

MARCH 26, 2022

ampa Pride welcomed supporters to Ybor May 22, 2021 for its seventh season, marking a long overdue return to form for both the celebration and the city it calls home.

20

The event had last welcomed an estimated 60,000 people in 2019, a record which officials expected to break in 2020 until festivities were postponed due to COVID-19. Organizers expected a 40% reduction in 2021 attendance but instead welcomed an estimated 80,000 Pridegoers. “Yes, we had a year off,” Tampa Pride President Carrie West shared ahead of Tampa Pride 2021, “but I’ll tell you we did a lot of work to make things happen. We worked overtime.” That was evident throughout the full day of events and entertainment. Festivities began with last year’s street festival and to ensure the safety of attendees, welcomed medical partners to offer the COVID-19 vaccine and more while providing a number of services. New in 2021 was Tampa Pride’s expansion into The Cuban Club. The historic space’s fourstory structure and surrounding courtyard hosted the official entertainment including singer Pepper MaShay, known for “Dive in the Pool” and disco diva Martha Wash, who headlined Pride at Night.

With such a successful outing in 2021, Tampa Pride is ready to celebrate the community it serves in 2022 with “The House of Tampa Pride.” This year’s theme is a testament to how close the organization and community have become, one that pays homage to the ballroom community and its contributions to the liberation movement. “We recognize these are trying times for our community, particularly with the recent actions of our legislature,” Tampa Pride Vice President Trevor James says. “We chose this theme to accomplish two goals: to celebrate the communities that fought to afford us the rights which we have today and to provide some perspective. “There is still much work to be done, but it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve had to unite,” James continues. “There is power in numbers and when we stand together, that’s when our light shines the brightest.” So celebrate this year as one great, big family – because that’s exactly what you are here in The House of Tampa Pride!

Tampa Pride — We’re proud to support you Diverse points of view help us see our future. A vibrant community depends on the participation of its members. The more diverse their backgrounds, experience and skills, the more unique their contributions to the community can be. fter uniting the community for Tampa Pride 2021, the organization returned last September with the inaugural Pride on the River, an end-of-summer celebration kicking off its 2022 season. Planning began soon after last year’s main event, an extension of Tampa Pride’s mission to organize year-round festivities “championing our shared experiences, honoring our differences and strengthening our community.” It featured the boat parade pictured above, a riverside festival, waterfront fireworks and more. “We are really the first Pride in the country to have two Pride events in the same city on totally opposite ends, one in the spring one in the fall,” Tampa Pride President Carrie West said. “We’re bringing the area together both on land and on the sea … taking advantage of what we have right here in our beautiful home.” Pride on the River Co-Directors Nicholas Catania and Ryan Sullivan shared his excitement. They called Pride on the River “exciting, fresh and everything that Tampa and Tampa Pride represent” and were right. Pride Zoo-La, Tampa Pride’s signature ZooTampa event also returned in November. Attendees enjoyed animal interactions, an art show and for the first time, the simultaneous Tampa Pride Pageant. Open to everyone, contestants vied for the crown in multiple categories, with local performer Galaxÿ securing the title of Miss Tampa Pride, seen above. “Representing Tampa Pride in 2022 to me means representing a city with true historical significance to many great people across the nation in our community,” the performer says. Tampa Pride also held Ultimate Showdown 2022: Pioneers in February of this year, welcoming some of Tampa Bay’s fiercest drag performers to compete for a top prize. Metro Inclusive Health presented the contest, which honored those who paved the way for LGBTQ rights. Ceazia Giovanni Kreshé finished on top, which Tampa Pride called a “well-earned win.” They added that “the diversity of our community was certainly on display … and we LIVED for it.”

MEET THE 2022 GRAND MARSHALS RYAN WILLIAMS-JENT

T

ampa Pride asked supporters to nominate grand marshals in four categories for this year’s event. They sought suggestions for an LGBTQ or LGBTQ-affirming trailblazer, a grand couple, a community leader and a business. Those chosen champion our shared experiences and honor our differences, Pride explains, and you can learn more about them here.

LGBTQA RECOGNIZED COMMUNITY LEADER:

DICK GRECO Tampa Pride’s leadership has enjoyed a long-time relationship with former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco, the Tampa native who served as the city’s 50th and 56th leader. Greco’s first term was from Oct. 1967 – Sept. 1971, which he began as one of the youngest mayors of a major city in the U.S. at 34 years old. Greco’s second term was from Oct. 1971 – April 1974. The mayor returned for a third term in April 1995, serving in the capacity until April 2003. Throughout his time in office he was engaged in a number of civic programs and is credited by the city for being an efficient problem solver who oversaw the municipality’s purchase of the bus system and more. Pride “is about love and caring and loyalty; being one unit as a city,” Greco says. “I hope Tampa never changes.”

GRAND MARSHAL: Rich Kerin is a proud to call himself an Yborite, one who advocates for the LGBTQ community of which he’s a part however he can. He holds an emeritus board position with the GaYbor District Coalition, which he helped form in 2007 to support the local LGBTQ community. He’s also served with the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Suncoast Softball League and even as a Tampa Bay Sister of Perpetual Indulgence.

“Tampa Pride and all Pride events are important because they gives people the chance to celebrate who they are without any judgement,” Kerin says. He encourages everyone to “just be you, be kind to people, help out when you can and try to make a difference in your everyday life.” CONTINUED ON PG. 34 |  |

MARCH 26, 2022

Being named a grand marshal for Tampa Pride 2022 came as a shock for him, Kerin says, because “I like to stay in the background and do the work.” But while he may not have expected the honor, it’s another role in his impressive resume that he’s worthy to fill.

TRAILBLAZER/PIONEER:

BILL KANOUFF Bill Kanouff is a true pioneer. The trailblazer says his life’s work has been to create and maintain safe, positive and intellectual spaces for Tampa Bay’s LGBTQ community. He’s been more than successful at it, with a long history of serving his community in various ways. Kanouff has been an officer for the Tampa Bay International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and worked in his restaurant The Eagles Nest, bookstore Tomes & Treasures and coffeeshop A Different Grind. He currently serves as the president of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Tampa Bay, which marked its 20th season in 2021. It celebrates the inherent dignity of all people through excellence in men’s choral music. “Pride historically, and even more so now, is a visible celebration of who we are,” Kanouff says. “This is as important today as it was decades ago. There is strength and affirmation in being with others like us and accepting ourselves for who we are. It is a great honor to be named grand marshal.” Kanouff says he advocates for the LGBTQ community however he can not to blaze trails but because it’s in his nature. “This is who I am,” he explains.

GRAND COUPLE:

TAMPA PRIDE 2022

MARCH 26, 2022

JOY AND LAEL WINHEIM

34

Joy Winheim and her spouse Lael first met in the late 90s, but didn’t connect romantically until 2011. By 2019 they were happily wed, the secret of which they say is to “encourage each other, laugh together, have each other’s backs and celebrate all of the small things.” It’s that sort of affirming work they bring to their LGBTQ advocacy. “It’s so important for Tampa to have this Pride event, especially as we are facing such harmful legislation in Florida,” the Winheims share. “We stand proudly with all of our fellow LGBTQIA community members.” They also advocate for equality and equity in their professions. Joy serves as the executive director for Empath Partners in Care, largely known as EPIC, which formed in 2016 after the merger of the AIDS Service Association of Pinellas and Tampa’s Francis House. Lael is a legal assistant at Tampa’s Weekley, Schulte, Valdes, Murman, Tonelli.

As for being named grand couple for Tampa Pride 2022, the Seminole Heights residents are thrilled. “Tampa was an important city to each of us when we came out,” they note. “We are honored to represent the robust LGBTQIA community at this wonderful event.”

RECOGNIZED ORGANIZATION:

METRO INCLUSIVE HEALTH Metro Inclusive Health has served Tampa Bay’s LGBTQ community since 1992, when from the basement of a community church they decided to formally incorporate as Metropolitan Charities to expand their health services. Today the organization is considered the second largest LGBTQ-focused health and community center in North America, offering more than 100 services and programs including primary care, behavioral health, HIV medical care, STI prevention and more. It’s a testament to Metro’s desire to increase its impact on the Tampa Bay community each year, which it does in Clearwater, New Port Richey, St. Petersburg and of course, Tampa. They opened their 30,000-square-foot facility in Ybor last year, an expansion that allowed the nonprofit to double its offerings. “As a partner in health to our LGBTQ+ community for nearly 30 years, we are humbled to be selected as grand marshal,” Metro Chief Marketing & Experience Officer Brian Bailey says. “We are committed to elevating the health and wellness experience of our Tampa Bay community.”

CELEBRITY GRAND MARSHAL:

ERIC HIMAN

TAMPA PRIDE 2022

MARCH 26, 2022

Eric Himan is billed as a triple threat, an award-winning singer and songwriter that’s as celebrated for his vocals as he is for his skills on a guitar or piano. The openly LGBTQ musician has released and independently sold more than 40,000 albums.

Among his latest is the hit single “Local Gay Bookstore,” released in 2020 as an homage to LGBTQ safe spaces, as well as recent albums “Contenders” and “Playing Cards.” He’s opened for Patty Griffin, India.Arie, Leon Russell and Edwin McCain, playing at songwriting festivals alongside Ani DiFranco, Loudon Wainwright III and more, with songs licensed to E!, MTV, VH1 and other channels. In addition to serving as a grand marshal, Himan will also perform during this year’s celebration. Tampa Pride Entertainment Committee Chair John Owen-Chambrone says the singer-songwriter is the perfect fit for Tampa Pride 2022.“I am probably more excited about this Tampa Pride than I have been in years. The past festivals have been great but there is something different about this year,” he says. “I have had the chance to see Eric Himan perform many times and am glad to bring one of my favorite singers to Tampa to headline our festival this year.”

HONORARY GRAND MARSHAL:

TIFFANI MIDDLESEXX Friends, family members and fans throughout Tampa Bay and beyond mourned the loss of Gerald J. Mayes in January, more widely known as drag legend Tiffani Middlesexx. The longtime entertainer died at 73 but will never be forgotten. Middlesexx captivated audiences for decades, including as headliner of the defunct Rene’s Club Cabaret, one of Tampa’s pioneering LGBTQ safe spaces. She retired at 63 with a farewell performance at Bradley’s on 7th, where she returned last November for a 10-year reunion benefit in support of the legend. The performer remained active throughout the community in other ways as well, including as a congregant of MCC Tampa. Mayes had previously served as a board member for the LGBTQ-affirming church. Senior Pastor Rev. Jakob Hero-Shaw, a former Tampa Pride grand marshal, shared news of Middlesexx’s passing via social media. “To all who love her, I offer this: may the glitter of her love stick to you like all the glitter she’s left behind after church drag shows,” he wrote. “This magical person who changed our lives is in God’s embrace and her love still shines on us.” South Florida’s Miss Florida F.I. Pageantry System also reflected on Middlesexx, who proudly won the pageant in 1980. “The entire Miss Florida F.I. Pageantry System mourns the loss of Miss Florida F.I. 1980, Tiffany Middlesexx,” they shared.

“Tiffani didn’t care if you called her ‘Tiffani’ or ‘Gerald’ or ‘he’ or ‘she,’” Hero-Shaw has noted. “As long as you called her Miss Florida.” Multiple celebrations of life have reflected on that in the months since, including at MCC Tampa and Bradley’s.

Owner Bradley Nelson, another former Tampa Pride grand marshal, shared that he and his staff were grateful they were able to host the benefit where Middlesexx performed “her last numbers on this earth.” The performer “was so happy that night,” Nelson recalled. “I am sure she is celebrating now with all the friends and legends who have gone before her.” Tampa Pride joined the community in mourning Middlesexx, noting they would honor the icon during this year’s celebration during the parade and more. Recounting her many accomplishments, they shared that “Gerald was a pioneer in Tampa’s drag community and the Florida community at large. “He has touched the lives of almost every local drag performer in one way or another, and we are honored to have shared many memories with him,” the organization continued. “May his memory live on forever. Rest in Power, Tiffani.”
