HELLO

COME OUT WITH PRIDE COMMUNITY!

GINA L. DUNCAN PRESIDENT // Metropolitan Business Association

COME OUT WITH PRIDE 2O11

The Metropolitan Business Association and our Come Out With Pride Team are very pleased to welcome you to this year’s Come Out With Pride! Each year, our production team devotes countless hours to make sure that each Pride event is better than the previous year. Each year we also look for ways to make the event different and more meaningful. This year is no exception; for the first time, we have moved the event to Saturday and added fireworks to complete this wonderful day of celebration. We are very proud to stand in solidarity with our LGBT brothers and sisters to commemorate National Coming Out Day, celebrating our authentic lives together. Each year our Pride event grows in size and attendance; this is a testament that more and more people feel the strength and support to come out and be themselves. We are told of many lives that are changed by experiencing Come Out With Pride. Many people are strengthened by the event and by witnessing the joy of the thousands of people who attend each year. And as a result of this experience, many find the power to finally come out and be true to themselves and their families. For the many volunteers who produce Come Out With Pride–led by the amazing Executive Director Mikael Audebert–this is the true meaning of our event. If we touch just one person, and show them that there are 100,000 other people just like them who have faced the same challenges and who now join them in celebrating their personal freedom, then we have done our job. Come Out With Pride is more than a festival and more than a parade. It is an expression of life in its truest form–an expression of joy from living an authentic life. On behalf of the Metropolitan Business Association and Come Out With Pride leadership team, we welcome you to Come Out With Pride 2011. OUT IS THE NEW IN!

WELCOME TO

YOUR PRIDE CELEBRATION, ORLANDO!

WITH PRIDE,

MIKAEL FRANK AUDEBERT Executive Director & Senior Executive Producer

COME OUT WITH PRIDE 2O11

In 2005 a group of individuals decided to take your celebration to the next level, truly inspiring people to rejoice their Pride. My own inspiration came from a man who has spent the better part of the past 5 years rebuilding and organizing Come Out With Pride to make it a world-class event, one the Orlando community could be proud of. I worked with former MBA president Dr. Dave for 3 years, and I still remember him asking, “What do a travel consultant and a psychotherapist know about event planning, really?” But I learned one thing; it is not as much about the skills as it is about your ability to lead, surround, motivate and love. Lead individuals to success, Surround yourself with dedicated souls, Motivate others to follow their dream, and Love what you do for your community. Dr. David Baker-Hargrove taught me those four basic elements, and we at COWP are forever grateful for his services to this organization. This year, we are taking our mission even further. OUT IS THE NEW IN, and we are working on a series of conferences and events aimed at positively reenforcing the importance of coming out with pride! While we are still working for full acceptance and recognition, let’s not forget how far we have come and focus on a positive outlook. It starts with educating and encouraging our peers to come out and be proud of who they are and what they stand for. We hope you enjoy the changes we have made this year: an improved festival area with more bars and food vendors, a revamped VIP area with more space, a fantastic food partner in Bahama Breeze, and finally, the added fireworks over our beautiful Lake Eola. While there are so many individuals and organizations that truly deserve our admiration and thanks, I’d like to mention just a few that have made our work easier. Scott L., Eric, Beth and Tricia are newcomers to the team, and they have done a remarkable job with a passion I have rarely seen. Other returning volunteers–Bob, Scott G., Sue Bee and Rick–continue to amaze me by their drive and dedication, giving up much of their free time. Last but not least, friends and partners EDGE FACTORY (Ryan, Brian, Carl and the gang) and The Walt Disney World PRIDE Diversity Resource Group (Andrea, Troy, Gene, Valerie and Paul) have shown support and patience in their relentless search for additional means to make Orlando Pride a truly world-class event.

Springs. “It was teen-free fabulous, and everything was glitter and rainbows!” jokes Lovitz. “Actually, I was a very fortunate person, growing up gay and doing theatre in south Florida. I had my first boyfriend at 16, and we were very open about it in school, both doing theatre. It’s a nurturing environment and not the norm for most people.” One person who helps provide a different perspective is Lovitz’s partner, who grew up in conservative Lincoln, Nebraska. “Hearing about his family and his private, religious school upbringing is very different from my life on the east coast,” Lovitz admits. “I realize just how lucky I had it.” Perhaps it was that same gratitude that led Lovitz to make a stand in a New York City courtroom on March 10, 2011. He replied that he couldn’t serve on a jury, because American

ife and career have completely surprised Jonathan D. Lovitz, the stage and television star who has also recently become known as an LGBT advocate. He first garnered national attention as a professional “wingman,” teaching the tricks of successful dating on the LOGO television show The Setup Squad. Since March, the actor/singer/model has also been interviewed by national news and media sources for his courtroom activism. “I still pinch myself thinking, ‘This can’t be real.’ I just turned 27. When I graduated from University of Florida, did I really imagine my life going this direction?” asks the charming, handsome Lovitz. The term “accidental activist” has been repeatedly attached to the Florida boy who calls Orlando his hometown. Most of his teenaged life was spent down the road in Coral

I wish more of the guys on LOGO would step up to.” “There are gays all over this country, and there and gay people in all walks and fields. I think that’s one of the keys to making kids feel more safe and comfortable in our schools and as they step out into the world. I love organizations like Victory Fund, which look to include more and more gay people in elected office, because we are a vocal minority, and we deserve representation in all forms of government. We are here, we are not going away, and we are at the core of the modern civil rights struggle.” It’s that message which leads him to Orlando’s Come Out With Pride event, with his parents and his two sisters–they’re all local now, raising kids and grandkids, teaching– supporting him the whole way. “I’m excited to see the entire city being involved. There are activities all over Orlando, not just downtown. I like that people in al walks of life are there for the sense of community and fun, and that it’s not just a political event.” He’s also amazed and proud to be a part of it. “I’m just a small-town Florida boy who went to New York to follow my dreams. Now I get to come back home and share all that with my family and friends.” |  |

law treated him and other LGBT as second-class citizens. The protest got him excused from duty. “It was so spur-of-the-moment,” Lovitz admits. “I never intended to be an activist.” “I’ve always cared, I’ve always had an appreciation for the struggles of the gay community, but it never directly affected me until I was put in the spotlight. I thought, hold up! I’m now front-and-center in this issue, and I want to do something about it! I fell into this whole world of advocacy, and I couldn’t be more grateful that I landed there.” Now, months later, the continued momentum amazes Lovitz: “I still get emails asking me what happened since. I tell people that the event really connected me to groups like GLAAD, Marriage Equality and Human Rights Council. People still tell me that they do the same thing in Texas or in North Dakota. They still have to serve, but they get to make their case. It makes a lot of people talk. That’s all you can ask to do, is get a conversation going. And until all 50 states recognize equality, I hope the conversation keeps going.” It was at that moment that Lovitz realized he could do more. “What really drew me to doing the Pride event this year was the realization that I’m one of a very small handful of out actors on television. With that comes a responsibility that

SCOTT LEAR+STEPHEN MILLER

Fashion Is OUT! OUT! C

ome Out With Pride is putting the fashion forward this year! Local fashion design students were challenged to create designs inspired by the following themes:

A fantastic look suitable for a drag queen  Elegant cocktail-party wear inspired by the Disco era A spring/summer look based on one of the colors in the COWP logo A look of the designer’s choosing that celebrates LGBT military service, LGBT business professionals, or LGBT parenting

The fashion show and judging will take place at the COWP Opening Ceremonies on Oct. 6, where the winning designer will also be announced. Both the winning designer and design will also be featured in our famous parade. Let’s meet out eight designers:

SOPHIA HENRY Sophia was born and raised in Tampa. After graduating high school, she served eight years in the Navy; she is currently a reservist. In 2009, she started studying at IADT Orlando for a career in fashion. Sophia hopes to someday own her own boutique. “I am proud to be able live in a lifetime where I can basically do anything I want, and feel free to express myself anyway that I want. I’m so proud to show people what I love to do so much.”

JULIA H.J. KNIGHT

DESIREE VOIGHT Desiree moved to Orlando from Lakeland to attend IADT. Desiree’s main sources of inspiration are vintage items. She is currently working on a private collection for spring 2012 called “Not Your Grandma’s Dress.” Her designs are available for custom orders on Etsy at http://www. desireemariedesigns.etsy.com. To Desiree, Come Out with Pride represents equality–a chance for everyone to come together to be proud of who they are without labels.

COME OUT WITH PRIDE 2O11

Julia knew that she wanted to be in fashion since age five. She enjoys designing versatile pieces to create sexy and edgy–yet affordable–creations. Julia wants women to feel confident in her designs. Ten years from now, she hopes to be living in a large city like New York or Milan, designing women’s ready-to-wear or footwear. For Julia, Pride is “knowing your worth while cherishing yourself and your talent, without being arrogant.”

RUSSELL REYNOLDS Russell is a proud Orlando native. His background is in illustration and graphic design, but a project assignment on Japanese fashion during his senior year in high school had him constructing an actual garment, and before he knew it, a passion had formed. His dream job after graduation would be to work for the Japanese design house h.Naoto. To Russell, having Pride means expressing yourself just the way you are.

LIZBETH SIERRA Liz moved to Orlando from Hollywood, Florida. From a young age, she’d had subscriptions to “just about every fashion magazine.” She’s hopes to graduate IADT next year. She works for Guess; she would like to intern there after she graduates. Foremost in her mind while she’s designing is wearability. Liz thinks Pride is “…about being comfortable with who you are, holding your head up high and being proud of who you are.”

RASINIA (RAZZ) PECUNIA Razz is originally from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico; she has lived in Orlando for five years. Razz believes fashion is a way to “bring art to life.” She would love to have her own brand, designing clothing for working, active women. Many of Razz’s closest friends are gay, so she knows the injustices the LGBT community faces. This make her want to stand up with them. In her words, having Pride is all about “who you are, being you all the way, not hiding it!”

CARLOS MARTINEZ

NATASHA POLLARD Natasha moved from Chicago to Orlando six years ago. From the age of seven she kept a fashion sketchbook. Natasha likes feeling confident as a woman and a single mom; she wants others to feel this way when they wear her clothing. She hopes to own a boutique. However, she realizes it will take hard work and knowing the business inside and out. For Natasha, having Pride means “you are excited, comfortable, and confident about who you are.”

COME OUT WITH PRIDE 2O11

Carlos is from San Juan, Puerto Rico, but has lived in Orlando for over 12 years. In high school he learned about fashion sketching, creating a mini-portfolio. He enrolled at IADT one month after graduating. He works as a visual lead for Anne Taylor stores while he’s in school; he sees a possible future in management there. What gives Carlos the most Pride is his ability to focus on the positive aspects of life each day while charting his own path.

COMING OUT TIPS S

ix years ago, we gave our celebration a great name: Come Out With Pride. This name also carries a lot of meaning for our community. Before our first OUT IS THE NEW IN conference, four people from different walks of life provided their best tips for coming out. For more information on upcoming programs, seminars and conferences organized by Come Out With Pride, visit comeoutwithpride.com and select Community.

ANDREA HAYS Walt Disney World Resort Operation Manager It took 15 years–actually, I should say 20-something years, to be honest–to say, “Hey Mom, I’m just not into guys.” Talk about confusion and overwhelming feelings! I found the moment (sitting in a public restaurant) to say the phrase that came easiest in my mind: “I am so happy and I want to tell you why.” Telling everyone that I was comfortable being me was the most exhilarating few years of my life. Yes, I said years, because it took me a while to tell everyone; Facebook didn’t exist at the time. I found that my worry and concern about how people would react was all for nothing; their reactions were positive, and in fact, many of them were waiting for me to tell them. Life is much easier when you don’t have to worry about playing the role of someone else…just be you!

Coming out is like an onion; there are many layers, and if not careful, it can stink and make you cry. Some people ask, “What’s so hard about this?” Coming out is a personal journey, where you must determine what you want and think about the impact on your life. There is no right or wrong way. Some people come out gradually to themselves and to others. The timing is up to you. There is no rule that you must suddenly send out a notice to everyone and come out in one day. You may never come out to some people or groups, and that’s ok, as long as you are true to who you want to be. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. There is no perfect answer or plan, only what works for you. It’s about feeling good about yourself and being true to yourself!

JOSELYNN WHITE Graphic Designer Coming out isn’t a pleasant event, but it’s necessary in order to live as an openly gay individual. My best advice is to anticipate the possible reactions ahead of the discussion. This way you’ll be prepared for the emotions and responses, and you’ll be able to deal with them accordingly. Think of multiple scenarios varying from best to worst, and have a plan. It’s a stressful experience that will continually occur throughout our lives. However, the stress of coming out is far better than the stress of trying to keep our sexuality a secret, whether with family, friends or in the workplace.

JOSHUA SCARPUZZI Young Activist, Writer and Public Speaker Coming out in four easy steps! Step 1: The Epiphany! Once you’ve realized this is who you are and accepted it, you are well on your way. Step 2: Trust! Tell someone you love and trust. Build your confidence and self-assurance before screaming it from the rooftops! Step 3: Baby Steps! You’re well on your way to breaking off that ball and chain. Go at your own pace, embrace it, but always use caution with who you tell and what you say. Step 4: Live It! Be who you are and always remember to live each day to its fullest. Live each day true to who you are! OK, now you can scream it from the rooftops!
