or the past three summers we have been to the same campsite in Devon with our three children. It is peaceful, basic, and has wonderful vistas across the south Devon coast. Oh, and for the past three years it has been incredibly windy with patchy rain and scattered loss of patience on my part. Therefore, with some trepidation, we have decided to step up a notch and stay in a cottage in Wales. I’ve never been to Wales without being drenched through to my underwear, but the children are so impressed that they get to go on holiday to a place with a roof and proper beds that the fact that we will most probably be permanently soggy doesn’t Liz Bourne Editor and local matter at all. And I’ve just read that 30% of Britains are mother of three camping this summer, most of them in Devon and Cornwall – so we might be wet, but at least we’ll be away from the crowds.

Artybobs comes to Chichester

Volunteers needed urgently!

Artybobs is a fun and sometimes messy class for your child. And now our local Artybobs class is opening up in Chichester. The classes are great for young children as it has been recognised that art is an important activity for kids. It stimulates both sides of the brain, enhances perceptual development, develops hand-eye co-ordination, introduces many facets of learning through themes, colours, shapes and textures, and most of all, it is fun! Contact Tammy-Lynne Lane on 07887 661 588 for more details of classes in the Emsworth and Chichester area. Bookings now being taken for summer sessions.

The Befriending Scheme for Older People is a project that matches volunteers with a partner (an older person) who lives in the Petersfield area, so they can enjoy their social time and leisure activities together. By befriending an older person you will help them to get out and about again, to make contact with other people and give them the opportunity to enjoy some company. Perhaps you could take someone for a walk, play a game or just sit and have a cup of tea together? All you need to do is to offer just an hour or two each month, and agree to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. Anyone can volunteer, full training is offered, expenses paid and ongoing support and supervision is provided. Hours are flexible and can be worked around your current commitments. Most importantly, it is anticipated that you will have lots of fun with your befriending partner! Nikki Bonner, Befriending Scheme Manager, says, ‘This could be the perfect volunteering opportunity for you if you’re a stay-at-home parent looking for something to fit in with and around your children, or perhaps if you are looking for some experience to get back into the workplace after caring for your children. If befriending isn’t for you, there are lots of other ways you can help our charity, such as in the office, advocacy work or fundraising. We would love to hear from you!’ If you are interested in finding out more information about becoming a Volunteer Befriender, call Nikki Bonner on 01730 233 345 or 07546 077 272, or email nikkiatehas@aol.com.

‘Mum, what’s that animal doing?’

W

hen I was a child, a trip to the duck pond with my grandfather or to the local park to see the squirrels was one of my favourite activities. Spurred on by Johnny Morris and his amazing talking lemurs, and the mellifluous tones of David Attenborough, here I could commune with the animals and at least pretend to be in the jungles of central Africa, rather than suburban England. My love of natural history and animals did not flag over the successive years. And now one of my favourite trips with my children is to the local farm or zoo. There are many benefits to taking a trip to the farm or zoo, other than the obligatory ice creams and tantrums in the gift shop, some of which can help a child develop a salutary view of the world.

Farms

Many farms now offer carefully supervised animal-handling sessions allowing children the chance to get close to the animals. It has been discovered that interacting and petting animals creates a hormonal response in humans that can help fight depression. Levels of serotonin, a hormone critical in the psychological well-being of an individual, are seen to rise dramatically after interaction with live animals. Children enjoy the playful nature of animals as well as the love and unconditional affection bestowed upon them through interaction. Through this interaction with the animals, children learn to care and be responsible for another being, helping to develop their sense of empathy. Farms also play an important educational role. Nowadays, the link

between food production and what is on offer at the supermarket meat counter is not always apparent. Indeed, at a local activity farm, one small child asked if the ear tag on the lamb was a barcode for the supermarket! Many farms offer hands-on experiences such as helping with the milking. For the children in particular, it is a great way to make the connection between what they put on their cereal in the morning and the cows that produced it. It also gives children and adults alike a great feeling of satisfaction once they manage to make the milk flow. Children take great delight in discovering a still-warm egg after inadvertently scaring a disgruntled hen from its nesting area. It is, of course, essential for children to make these connections between the farm and the food they eat if they are to understand how to care for their environment and the world around them. And inevitably, I am sure all of us parents who have visited a farm during early spring will have witnessed a scene guaranteed to strike fear into our hearts, and provoke a small voice to say, ‘Mummy, why is that goat on top of the other one?’ Ways to deal with this can vary from ushering the child towards the somewhat ‘safer’ corn threshing machine, whilst others may take the opportunity to have an indepth discussion about the birds and the bees.

Zoos

Seeing a giraffe, a lion, or even a golden-rumped elephant shrew up close can be a breathtaking experience. Zoos are a great opportunity to see for real animals that even in the wild would be elusive and/or dangerous. These close-up encounters can help foster and reinforce children’s love of nature. This can only help connect children with the

world outside their immediate environment, thus promoting a wellrounded perception of their place on the planet. Zoos throughout the country are heavily involved in the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. Through visiting zoos this work is supported financially and visitors are made fully aware of the programmes that they support. Children are encouraged to learn about these important programmes that range in scope from managing biodiversity in the immediate vicinity to reintroducing the scimitar-horned oryx and conserving other desert wildlife in the Sahara. Zoos do offer some hands-on experiences, although if your child is hoping to stroke a tiger they might be disappointed! Children can see, hear, touch and explore the world around them through handling the lessaggressive exhibits at the ‘Children’s Zoo’, or by examining animal skins, turtle shells and other artefacts. Often zoos will Image: © Mar well Wildlife highlight the goings-on of poachers and other illegal trades by showing visitors confiscated goods such as elephant tusks and rhino horns. Seeing these items and understanding what had to happen to the creature in order to obtain them can send an important conservation message to children and adults alike.

A great day out

Whatever great sense of environmental fervour and deep empathy you are trying to foster within your children when you take them to a farm or zoo, no one can take away from a child the sense of sheer joy and disgust in equal measure when an animal poos right in front of them. Wight Adventures for Kids

W

ightlink is the leading cross Solent ferry operator offering the greatest choice of routes to the Isle of Wight with a fleet of eight car and passenger ferries and three high-speed foot passenger FastCat catamarans. Its fast, year-round shuttle service to the Isle of Wight is used annually by more than five million passengers and one million vehicles. To cater for the differing tastes of Island visitors, Wightlink produces a range of themed booklets and online guides. These include Footloose, which provides the low down on the many and varied attractions available to those exploring the Isle of Wight on foot, Green Getaways guide to green accommodation, and Wight Taste Trail, which profiles the very best local food on the Island. All are available free from Wightlink by calling 0871 376 1000 and to view or download from the web site at wightlink.co.uk. Parents looking for ways to entertain their kids on the Isle of Wight should take a look at Wightlink’s online guide, Not the Beach Again, at wightlink.co.uk/ notthebeachagain – which spotlights activities that will captivate kids yearround, both during and away from the summer beach months. The attractions featured as part of the guide are based on the results of a survey, conducted by Wightlink to gauge the likes and dislikes of child visitors to the Isle of Wight. While traditional beach activities remain the top children’s choices, with Sandown and Compton Bay heading the list of best beaches, visits to animal attractions and theme parks came a close second. The survey also asked kids to nominate their favourite rainy day activities. Top choices were indoor attractions, craft and activity centres and even long country walks, provided that children are properly togged up in raincoats and wellies! Attractions recommended include Dinosaur Isle, Britain’s first purposebuilt dinosaur museum, and Amazon World, which recreates the magic of the Amazon Rainforest. Not the Beach Again flags up special deals available to families travelling on foot or in a car with Wightlink. In addition to the cost-cutting Days Out ferry and attraction tickets, these include a wide range of money saving Triplelink, Wight Rover and Island Express tickets combining ferry travel with bus and train tickets on the Isle of Wight and UK mainland. More information can be found at wightlink.co.uk/specialoffers.

Fit for Sport

I

f you are in the Portsmouth or Petersfield area this summer and are looking for something for your children to do, why not book them into a day at Fit For Sport, the UK’s leading healthy lifestyle activities provider. It’s all too easy for children to be lured towards the computer or television when there are no structured activities on offer, but Fit For Sport offer a fun way to get active. Fitness doesn’t have to mean expense and huge effort. The local park, for example, is a wonderful resource and often has enough free and fun activities to keep children active all day. Fit For Sport believe in a simple, achievable and sustainable approach to fitness. Check out their new campaign to help get families fitter at fitterfamilies.com. Whatever children do, it will broaden their experiences and add depth to their learning at school. As the government places more emphasis on literacy, numeracy and the requirements of the national curriculum, some schools are finding it difficult to find time for art, drama, creative activities and sport. Any out-of-school activity which parents can facilitate is therefore a bonus. A school holiday that is full of interest and activity also helps children to get back into school work more quickly at the start of the new term, as focus and confidence are known to improve. For more information on Fit For Sport’s OFSTED registered Healthy Lifestyle Activity Camps during the Summer holidays and all other school holidays, please call 0845 456 3233, email enquiries@fitforsport.co.uk or visit fitforsport.co.uk.

ocal author, Ali Sparkes, is launching her newest book at the beginning of July. Known for the successful Shapeshifter series and the Monster Makers books, Ali lives in Southampton and has had a varied career, from Bluecoat at Pontins to reporter for the local newspaper, before finally settling down as a children’s author. You can learn more about her and her books, and view a trailer for the book at www.alisparkes.com. Dark Summer is the tale of Eddie, a boy sent to his selfish aunt’s house for the summer whilst his mother recovers from a serious illness. His cousins are vile: Kayleigh and Chanelle are too busy wearing sequins, disco dancing and singing really badly, and Damon is just, well, vile. On a trip to Wookey Hole, Eddie is lured away from the tour group to a different part of the cave by an old man. There he sees a young girl, but there is something a bit different about her. With a pass that allows him into the caves as often as he likes, Eddie spends his days with the strange girl, and eventually discovers the truth about the caves. But I won’t give it away! With her characteristic humour, Ali Sparkes manages to create a tale in the true spirit of Enid Blyton, an adventure that gallops along at such a pace it is impossible to put down. The launch of Dark Summer will be held at Wookey Hole Caves in Somerset on Saturday, 4th July from 4:30-6pm. Ali will be doing a special reading in the spooky Witch’s Parlour. Available from the beginning of July priced at £5.99, the book is published by Oxford University Press. We have been lucky enough to get ten copies of the book to give away. For your chance to win a copy, just answer this simple question:

In which English county is Wookey Hole? Send your answer along with your name and address to: Dark Summer, Families Solent East, PO Box 731, Southsea PO1 9AR; or send an email with your answer and details to: competitions@familiessolenteast.co.uk, with ‘Dark Summer’ as your subject. upported by the World Wildlife Fund’s and London Zoo’s The Edge Programme, these books encourage young readers to discover endangered species. Curious Cat travels the world looking for these threatened animals. The rhyming text explores location, climate, habitat, appearance and habits while the illustrations show glimpses of the featured animal, so that the reader guesses its identity sooner, later or at the very end where the creature is revealed in all its glory. I believe a local bookstore manager beat me to the statement that ‘there is nothing quite like this out there’. The rhyming text is just begging to be read out loud, the peripheral details such as the maps of the animals’ home continents pack in that extra bit of fascination, the Curious Cat persona will be one children immediately identify with and the guessing game will have co-readers screaming to get there first with the animal’s identity. Each book is in easy-to-handle ‘Mr Men’ format and just 32 pages will fascinate, entertain and educate children on just so many levels. Even better, underlying the whole series is the green theme of caring for our planet so that such glorious creatures are not lost. The WayOut Bunch series created by Jenny Tulip and Dawn Smith, is published by Green Arc Creations Ltd and RoperPenberthy. The books are priced at £2.99 with a slipcase set of five costing £11.99. They are available in book shops, and from Amazon and wwf.org.uk. Frances Loates

n the days of yore, boys were boys and men were men. Real men didn’t eat quiche and they certainly didn’t wear guy-liner and manscara. Men knew how to weld, fix a puncture using just the contents of his pockets and whittle a pipe rack out of left over timber. Boys became men through reading such tomes as World of Wonder, a magazine from the early 70s that taught about the dangers of eating mouldy rye bread (it sends you mad, apparently) and of manly heroes such as Scott of the Antarctic. Nowadays, however, our boys are to make do with a galaxy-travelling Time Lord and a boy who can turn into ten different aliens at the drop of a hat. But thanks to Neil Oliver, archaeologist and broadcaster, we can now show our boys some unashamed old-fashioned heroism. Amazing Tales relates in an appealing and sensitive way, stories of heroism throughout history. From the modern day tale of the bravery of the Penlee lifeboat men, to the Battle of Isandlwana, this book retells these epic narratives of courage, fortitude and sacrifice, detailing the characters of men who understood that it was more important to die a hero than live a coward’s life. Amazing Tales, £8.99, is the perfect book for taking on holiday. Read it to your children whilst snuggled up in a tent, the wind blowing a gale outside, and imagine that you are Scott, Wilson and Bowers, at the South Pole. You may need to pull straws to decide who’s to be Oates though.

Happy holidays The British have a long history of travelling, from pilgrimages and Grand Tours, to inter-railing and knobbly knees competitions. But despite this tradition, the reality of travelling with children can strike fear into the heart of any parent. Long car journeys, extremes of weather, lashings of impatience – it all adds up to a week of jangled nerves and shattered dreams. Yet we still feel compelled to take the obligatory summer holiday. The camping holiday has seen a resurgence in recent times, with the availability of decent waterproof materials, wellequipped campsites and its eco-friendly image. Yet despite camping’s reputation for being a cheap, family-friendly holiday, the scope for disaster is broad, as these TellingTales show… s ago, we were enjoying Whilst camping a couple of summer explore the outdoors. girls g youn the freedom of letting our two the use of just one Whilst I struggled to cook supper with old for a moment too long. saucepan, I took my eye off our two year head to foot in Vaseline and zinc She appeared from the tent, covered the elbow, supper abandoned, and castor cream. Reportage Press

If you want to experience life further afield but without the expense of air travel, visit reportagepress.com for some excellent books specialising in foreign affairs. Set up by Rosie Whitehouse, this is a very special publishing house, an antidote to the more mainstream, celebrity-crazed publishers around. The books she publishes are thoughtful, provocative and powerful and will change the way you see the world. Visit the web site to enter Trains, Planes and Pushchairs: Reportage Press Travel Writing Competition, to win a copy of Ros Wynne-Jones’s Something is Going to Fall Like Rain, about a village in the sprawling desert of Southern Sudan where starvation and war threatens the community and the aidworkers living there.

Rosie Whitehouse

As well as being a successful publisher, Rosie is also mother to five children and wife to Tim Judah, a frontline reporter. You can read Rosie’s blog on rosiewhitehouse.co.uk. Buy her book, Are We There Yet?, a story for all parents, whatever your situation, about bringing up children in the harsh environment of the Balkans in the early 1990s. Rosie writes intelligently and wittily about carrying out the mundane daily tasks of parenthood, whilst at the same time worrying about her husband’s safety reporting from the frontline, and how to explain it to the children.

Britain With Kids

By William Gray Published by Footprint, £14.99 Gone are the days of soggy egg sandwiches and weak lemon squash in a lay-by (maybe that was just my family holidays). Family holidays in Britain are riding a new wave of popularity, and it’s not simply due to the current economic situation or environmental concerns of flying overseas. The truth is the uk is actually a brilliant place to have a holiday, with a varied and exciting range of things to do and places to stay. Not only is Britain beautiful and diverse, with beaches and national parks to rival the world’s finest, but its family attractions – from castles to woodland adventure parks – are some of the best you’ll find anywhere. Best selling travel writer, William Gray, has researched and written Britain with Kids, a celebration of all these things and more. Set out by region, the book suggests outings, places to stay, places to eat and things to do in an appealing and inspiring way. Best of all, he points out that you don’t have to spend money to have fun and comes up with some great ideas. With some fabulous images, this book is not just an entertaining read in a handy compact size, Britain with Kids is also the essential guide to the summer. www.familiessolenteast.co.uk
