PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Raise your hand if the list of places you want to visit seems to stretch on and on and on. You can’t see me, but I’m over here with my hand all the way up and a big smile on my face. Ireland, Costa Rica, Fiji…my travel bucket list runneth over just like my beloved cups of coffee. While my dream destinations vary in landscape from rolling green hills to resorts floating on crystal-clear waters, there’s one thing that’s ever-constant in all of my vacations: my need for a plan. Some people like to fly by the seat of their pants when they go on a trip (I’m looking at you, hubby). Then there are people like me who need to know exactly what they’re doing and when to have a good time. Trust me, I won’t be a happy camper if I don’t. A detailed to-do list—compiled at least the day before, mind you—puts me in the right headspace to enjoy exciting new surroundings to the fullest. Needless to say, our travel-themed issue suits both tendencies of mine quite nicely. I get to discover more amazing locales to daydream about and learn which attractions, restaurants, and activities to build my future itinerary around. If you’re anything like me, the

Just wait until I’ve put the finishing touches on my plan and you’d better believe I’ll be right there with you. Cheers to putting your seatbacks and tray tables in the upright and locked position. It’s finally time to move freely about the cabin!

MINDFULNESS

Meditate, Dream, Breathe A New Haven from the Daily Grind

By Stephanie Puente, Certified Life Coach

Many of us often long for that ideal break or that perfect retreat from the daily grind. We desire to get away from the office, the laundry, the business calls or the routine drive getting ourselves (or our kids) from point A to point B. And oftentimes we think that in order to relax or to feel like we have taken some time for ourselves, we must book a trip to a faraway place. You may yearn for a grand adventure somewhere exotic, but if that’s not practical right now, there are things you can do in the here and now to help you find your escape. The vehicle you operate to get away from it all does not have to be a car, a train, a plane or a cruise ship. Each day can be seen as a new journey with a beginning, a middle and an end. As a life coach, I will share with you some of the tools I have clients use to help them change their perceptions about their day-to-day lives. These tools will allow you to get centered and grounded and gain a fresh outlook on your experiences. You can enjoy your own mini-retreat without even leaving the house. Every day can be its own adventure using these simple yet effective tools. The first tool is meditation. This can be listening to a guided audio app or simply sitting quietly for a few minutes. Meditation can be very powerful because it reinforces positive thoughts and helps shrink the fears. It creates a 8 WATERWAYS | June 2022

safe space to let your mind open and allows for a flow of new thoughts, ideas and inspirations. Deepak Chopra says it well: “Meditation takes you beyond the mind’s noisy chatter into the pure awareness that is the source of all your happiness, inspiration and love.” Meditation has been shown to reduce stress, improve sleep patterns, lower cortisol levels and even boost memory and learning. It can leave you feeling happy and fulfilled. And regardless of what you are looking for in a guided meditation, whether it’s manifestation, abundance, relaxation or something else, there are so many apps to choose from, and they are easily found on the Web. Whether you choose one that’s long or short, there is one to fit into any schedule. The next tool I love to have clients tap into is the imagination. Have you ever sat back and watched a small child using their imagination? They are living their best life and just having a great time. And while it can sound silly or underwhelming as an adult, the imagination is a very powerful tool. You might think that you don’t have an imagination or are unsure if you know how to use it anymore. This is simply untrue. If you have ever found yourself thinking about all the bad things that could happen in a situation, that is your imagination at work. The opportunity now is to consider using your imagination to visualize a beautiful >>

MINDFULNESS image of something you really want to experience. Once you allow yourself to dream up something expansive, you will not only feel recharged and enlivened, working with your imagination in this way will also help you create a clear vision of what you would love to manifest in life. The imagination is a gift that can take us anywhere we want to go, do anything we want to do and create anything we want to create.

Albert Einstein said: “I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” And Muhammad Ali said: “The man who has no imagination has no wings.” As you work with your imagination to gain clarity on what you want, you will become more aware of the opportunities around you and the actions you can take to serve your vision. Maybe you don’t feel like you have time to sit down and listen to a meditation or to allow your imagination to run wild, but you desperately need a break. This is where the third tool comes in—the breath. Breathing deeply can be a restorative and transformative experience. Simply breathe in slowly through the nose and out through the mouth as if you are blowing through a straw. Do this a minimum of three times to calm your nervous system and bring clarity to your busy mind. For a moment, all of your cares and frustrations will be left behind and you will be able to just be present. The deep breaths send a signal to your brain that everything is alright. Your body will relax, and your productivity should improve both personally and professionally. Lama Surya Das said: “With every breath, the old moment is lost; a new moment arrives. We exhale and we let go of the old moment. It is lost to us. In doing so, we let go of the person we used to be. We inhale and breathe in the moment that is becoming… We repeat the process… This is renewal. This is life.” By establishing a daily self-care routine and adding meditations, quiet moments to allow yourMeditation takes you beyond the mind’s noisy chatter self to “dream” or to take a few minutes to breathe into the pure awareness that is the source of all your deeply and intentionally, you can create a safe haven for your thoughts and feelings. You will happiness, inspiration and love. make space to love this life you are living and, by —Deepak Chopra doing so, become centered and more relaxed and empowered. Life will no longer feel like something you need a vacation from as each day will become a journey of new discoveries. It does not matter if you can or cannot take a vacation or travel to faraway places. The potent tools I’ve described are right at your fingertips and can be used right now to expand and grow your life to become what others may refer to as a “dream life.” But don’t take my word for it. Try this yourself. See each day as an opportunity to learn something new, and watch your life transform before your eyes.

DREAMY LOCAL HOTELS OFFER STAYCATIONS WITHOUT THE TRAVEL HASSLES By Cindy Brzostowski

Antsy to get out of the house? Want to go somewhere to recharge for a bit? If you answered a wholehearted “yes” to both questions but felt like saying a big “no thanks” to planning a big trip, a staycation concierge ordered. All you have to do is take your pick from the many hotels across Austin. From a luxurious five-star stay to a more casual escape in the heart of downtown, here are some choice options for your in-town “getaway.” These hotels are also recommended for any visiting friends or family who prefer lodging with a little more character than your standard chain hotel.

HOTEL MAGDALENA The Seventies-inspired Hotel Magdalena embodies so much of what there is to love about Austin. Located right on South Congress, just a short walk away from Lady Bird Lake, the thoughtfully designed property includes beautiful grounds (and a 900-square-foot swimming pool) that make it a true urban oasis. During your stay, be sure to enjoy a meal at Summer House on Music Lane, the hotel’s full-service restaurant. Guest perks include a calendar of activities like yoga and live music, and bike rentals are complimentary. 1101 Music Ln. | hotelmagdalena.com

ORIGIN HOTEL Located in the Mueller neighborhood, Origin Austin is one of the newest hotels to pop up in the city. There’s plenty for wellness-minded visitors to be excited about at this boutique hotel, from the state-of-the-art gym (Peloton bikes included) to the ample green space of Mueller Lake Park right around the corner. The location is a highlight because part of the fun of a staycation is immersing yourself in a part of the city you don’t normally frequent. And there’s lots to love about this area with the Thinkery children’s museum, Alamo Drafthouse and various restaurants all in the immediate vicinity. >> 1825 McBee St. | originhotel.com/hotels/austin

Thompson Austin

Adjacent to the UT campus, The Otis Hotel is for those who love a bit of luxury without the pretentiousness. The comfortable, tastefully decorated rooms are the perfect place to rest your body, and each one has a vinyl record player. It’s not just a gimmick, either, as the hotel has its own “vinyl ambassador” who can help you pick out a selection of records to enjoy during your stay, whether you want to bliss out or rock out. Another big plus of being a guest here: easy access to the 21+ rooftop pool and lounge. One of the best times to visit is during the Golden Hour happy hour, extending from one hour before to one hour after sunset Monday through Thursday. 1901 San Antonio St. | otishotel.com

LONE STAR COURT At Lone Star Court, a retro aesthetic meets modern comforts and convenience. You may be in the middle of The Domain, but it feels like you’ve left the city entirely thanks to the resort-style courtyard, dipping pool and fire pits. In true Austin fashion, you’ll be treated to some live music every weekend, and there are even food trucks on the property. >>

Situated in the center of downtown, Thompson Austin opened its doors in January, beckoning those who love their staycations with a healthy dose of refinement. The rooms are chic with their sumptuous interior design, and the food is enticing with culinary experiences driven by James Beard Award-winning chef Mashama Bailey and business partner Johno Morisano. You’ll be set for fitness, too. An expansive wellness center has a golf simulator and private workout rooms. And after workouts, you can settle into a private cabana with a refreshing cocktail in hand at the fourth-floor pool area. 506 San Jacinto Blvd. thompsonhotels.com/hotels/texas/austin/thompson-austin Lone Star Court

TOMMIE AUSTIN Not to be confused with Thompson Austin, tommie Austin is located right next door. It’s part of the same Hyatt hotel group but offers an entirely different experience. At the tommie, the rooms are smaller and more minimalist but also more affordable. You’ll still get access to the amenities of Thompson Austin, including the pool, and enjoy the benefits of the prime downtown location. SATISFY YOUR WANDERLUST ADD THESE INTERNATIONAL DESTINATIONS TO YOUR TRAVEL BUCKET LIST By Cindy Brzostowski

As we become more and more comfortable with the idea of returning to international travel, it can be hard to decide where to go given how long we’ve had to put off any overseas adventures. With a newfound appreciation for just how much travel means to us and a literal world of options, what should that next big destination be? If they weren’t on your travel bucket list already, two places worth seriously considering are Bologna, Italy and Mallorca, Spain. The first makes for a fun, quick getaway during any bigger trip in Southern Europe, while the latter is somewhere you can spend days on end and still not feel ready to leave. To help with your planning, we’ve put together sample itineraries for a weekend in Bologna and a week in Mallorca. Whether you follow these to a T or use them as general inspiration, you’ll be set for an unforgettable time.

A Weekend in Bologna When dreaming up a vacation to Italy, cities like Rome, Milan and Venice are bound to be at the top of your list, especially if you’ve never visited the Mediterranean country before. But if you can spare a couple of days in your itinerary, you won’t regret making your way to Bologna, the historic capital of the Emilia-Romagna region. Bologna is not only the food capital of Italy, which is enough reason to visit, but also the oldest university town in Europe as its university was founded in 1088. Given that the city has an international airport and is easily walkable, it’s an accessible and worthwhile place to visit even for those who are short on time.

DAY 1 Start your Bologna adventure at Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, a city square where you’ll see not one but two legendary leaning towers (Asinelli and Garisenda). Then, walk five minutes to the Basilica di San Petronio. This impressive church is one of the largest in Europe and is distinct for its unfinished facade. It’s also the focal point of Piazza Maggiore, a busy square with a Neptune fountain from the 16th century. Continue west to reach Mercato delle Erbe, an indoor market with stands for produce and other foods as well as sit-down dining.

Speaking of food, sampling the local specialties is an essential part of experiencing Bologna. Try a mortadella sandwich at Mò Mortadella Lab, the lasagne verdi alla Bolognese (green lasagna) at Osteria dell’Orsa, the tortelloni and/or tortellini at Pasta Fresca Naldi and the cotoletta alla Bolognese (veal cutlet) at Trattoria Amedeo.

DAY 2 Bologna is famous for its 62 kilometers of porticoes, including about 40 kilometers in the city center, so you’ll find that much of your time walking around the city is spent strolling under roofed arcades. To fully experience this architectural wonder, walk the length of the Portico di San Luca, regarded as the longest portico in the world at just under four kilometers. It starts at Porta Saragozza, a medieval gate at the southwestern border of the center, and takes you all the way to the hilltop Sanctuary of San Luca outside the city. When you make it back to the city, explore whichever parts of the Quadrilatero, the city’s lively mercantile square, which you haven’t seen yet. Before you call it a day, treat yourself to gelato at Gelateria Gianni (the pistachio is a delight). >>

A Week in Mallorca

32 WATERWAYS | June 2022

DAY 1 - PALMA After flying into Palma de Mallorca Airport, spend your first day settling in and enjoying the island’s bustling capital. One can’t-miss attraction is the Palma Cathedral (also called the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma or La Seu), the magnificent Gothic Roman cathedral that dominates the city skyline. From there, wander the picturesque alleys throughout the rest of the Old Town, check out the Palace of Almudaina and visit the many shops along Paseo del Borne. For lunch, enjoy a meal at Botànic, where you can be seated in an enchanting and serene garden setting. For dinner, make reservations at the sophisticated DINS Santi Taura, which has a Michelin star. >>

Every year, millions of tourists make their way to Mallorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. While you can easily drive from one end of the island to the other in two hours, there are far more things to do and sights to see than you might expect. For starters, the landscape transforms from picture-perfect sandy beaches to long stretches of vineyards and olive groves to lush mountainous regions. There’s also the vibrant cityscape of Palma, the capital of the island, situated right on the coast. While you can make do without a car in Palma, it’s in your best interest to rent one for getting around the rest of the island. Must-see attractions are scattered all over, and you’ll appreciate the freedom of coming and going as you please.

The first makes for a fun, quick getaway during any bigger trip in Southern Europe, while the latter is somewhere you can spend days on end and still not feel ready to leave. Robert Graves. Those interested in fine dining should consider reserving a table at Es Racó d’es Teix.

DAY 4 — SÓLLER & PORT DE SÓLLER Another day, another charming old town to visit. This time, it’s Sóller. If you’re staying in Palma, you can take a train on the narrow-gauge railway that runs between the two towns. Once you arrive, you’ll be right next to the main square, Plaza de la Constitución, a good starting point to explore the local cafes, shops and restaurants. Next up is a short trip north to Port de Sóller. An alternative to driving from Sóller to Port de Sóller is to take the roughly 15-minute journey on an historic tram. Once you’ve made it to the resort town, take a stroll around the protected bay, where a number of restaurants serve seafood by the water.

DAY 5 — POLLENSA/POLLENÇA & PUERTO POLLENSA/PORT DE POLLENÇA

DAY 2 — BANYALBUFAR & VALLDEMOSSA Drive up to Banyalbufar, a quiet town tucked in the Tramuntana Mountains and characterized by a series of terraces. Some things to do in the area include shopping for local products in the village, swimming at Cala Banyalbufar (a small stretch of beach surrounded by cliffs) and watching the sunset at Torre del Verger (a former watchtower on the hilltop). Afterward, make the 25-minute drive to the nearby town of Valldemossa. You can spend a good chunk of time simply wandering the cobblestone streets of this romantic, picturesque town. For dinner, book a table at Es Taller, which specializes in tapas made from local, seasonal products.

DAY 3 — DEIÀ On your way into Deià, stop by Son Marroig, the former mansion of the Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria. Many visit the mansion purely for the stunning view of the coastline. For another amazing vista, pop over to Restaurante Mirador Na Foradada for lunch, where you can look out onto the Sa Foradada rocky peninsula. From there, it takes less than 10 minutes by car to get to Deià, a pretty mountain village that has attracted many creatives over the years, including English poet and novelist 34 WATERWAYS | June 2022

To explore a different area on the northern part of the island, drive to Pollensa, where several historic attractions await. The Pont Romà is a Roman bridge still used today, and fit travelers can tackle the Calvari Steps, 365 steps leading up to a chapel and a nice view over the town. While you’re on this part of the island, take the short drive to Puerto Pollensa, a coastal resort town with easy access to a long strip of beach. Keep going east from there to visit Mirador Es Colomer, one of the best lookouts on the island, and the lighthouse at Cap de Formentor, a popular destination for watching the sunset.

DAY 6 — ARTÀ & NEARBY BEACHES The beaches, of course, are one of the big draws of Mallorca, and you can find some gorgeous ones on the east side of the island. Cala Torta, Cala Mesquida, Cala Agulla and Platges de Canyamel are popular options, and they’re all within easy driving distance of each other. To break up the beach hopping on this part of the island, take some time to explore Artà, a historic town that isn’t as crowded with tourists as others we’ve mentioned. Check out the fortified Sanctuary de Sant Salvador and enjoy a filling meal of local food at Es rebost de Ca’n Mauro.

DAY 7 — BINISSALEM & CONSELL If you like wine, you can spend the day hopping from winery to winery in and around Binissalem and the neighboring town of Consell, which are at the heart of the island’s wine region. Some popular wineries to visit include Bodegas José L. Ferrer, Can Novell, Bodegas Angel, Bodegas Macià Batle and Bodega Biniagual. This area is also where you’ll find Bodega Ribas, established in 1711 and recognized as the oldest winery on the island.

But there are plenty of reasons to remain on the property, too. The day spa offers massages and facials to help guests melt away stress, and the grounds offer plenty of spots to lounge. You can relax around the firepit in the greenhouse or on the garden patio, where ponds and dining areas are also found. A grove of mature cypresses form a massive canopy, offering guests a shady respite and a perfect Hill Country photo op. Additionally, the inn is about 100 yards from the popular Blue Hole Swim Area, which is bordered by a large lawn with hammocks, a firepit, picnic tables and room to play.

Pro Packing What’s in Your Luggage? By Edith Henry, Stylist and Image Consultant It’s an understatement that the past two years have given us all cabin fever. How many fevers last that long? But after endless travel restrictions, our long-awaited vacation getaways are finally right around the corner. Waiting so long, however, means that we are out of practice in deciding what and how to pack. Ironically, packing for a vacation that’s meant to ease stress can create stress. And packing for multiple family members can make the task even more daunting. Whatever you bring on your trip, it shouldn’t include “extra baggage” in the form of anxiety over what is or isn’t in your suitcase. How do you decide what and how much to bring? Packing for a trip can be tricky, so my first bit of advice is to avoid packing at the last minute. Keep in mind that some things you can get along without and others you can’t, so pack trip necessities and any destination-specific items (example: a down jacket if you’re headed to Antarctica) first to ensure they won’t be left behind. 40 WATERWAYS | June 2022

Even before you start packing, finalize your itinerary even if most of the time you plan to relax by a resort pool. Knowing what you’re planning to do at the destination will help you prepare and pack the right items. Also helpful is to check the long-range weather forecast. These aren’t too reliable more than five days ahead, so do this a couple of days before you leave. Once you’re ready to begin packing, make a list of the items you are thinking of bringing, accounting for the number of trip days. Then, pile everything on the list on your bed to get a sense of whether it will all fit—so that if it doesn’t, you can scale back. What to include on the list is dependent on where and when you’re going. Unless you’re headed to a balmy destination, you may need some type of jacket. You might want to wear it when you’re boarding the plane because they can be chilly, but otherwise, fold or roll it into your suitcase or (if it’s thin and compact) in your carry-on. >>

STYLE FILE To make it all fit, figure that every article of clothing you pack can be worn at least twice, not counting any special items for specific events such as a formal dress or suit for a destination wedding. Also, don’t pack a bulky wetsuit if you’re going to take a single surfing lesson or ski gear for a possible day on the slopes. It makes more sense to rent those items at the destination so you don’t have to lug too much around and pay the extra luggage fees. And if you don’t expect to hit the gym on most days, don’t bring workout clothes. It’s a waste of limited luggage space, plus you’ll be able to see a new place better if you do outdoor workouts like long walks, bike rides, or paddling a rented kayak. Follow a color scheme that accommodates mixing and matching, and favor items that can easily be worn for multiple activities. Jeans, for example, can be either casual or dressy. Black works almost anywhere, any time of year (the fabric and garment dependent, of course, on the destination’s climate). A skirt can be worn with a T-shirt and flip-flops or sneakers during the day and with a blouse and heels at night. A linen top can serve as a beach coverup as well as a blouse for brunch.

Once you’re ready to begin packing, make a list of the items you are thinking of bringing, accounting for the number of trip days. Then, pile everything on the list on your bed to get a sense of whether it will all fit—so that if it doesn’t, you can scale back. Next, create multiple outfit options with the pieces you pull before you pack by laying each outfit on your bed and snapping a picture of it on your phone. This will not only help you see which and how many “capsule” travel outfits (interchangeable, complementary clothing) you might want to pack but will also give you an easy reminder of what to wear once you’ve settled in at your destination. The “capsule travel” method is much more space-efficient than packing an entire outfit or two for each day. Don’t underestimate the merits of packing a few accessories. A necklace or scarf can add color and whimsy to the T-shirt worn during the day as well as the outfit you wear to dinner. And these items are wonderfully portable, capable of being packed in baggies or stuffed into shoes. Speaking of shoes, for most trips, a pair of walking shoes and a pair of dressy shoes are essential. A third choice, if you have the space, would be sandals, casual slip-ons, boots or specialty shoes (such as bike shoes if you’re doing a long bike ride).

42 WATERWAYS | June 2022

Don’t forget undergarments for each day, plus a few extras. A few single-size packets of laundry detergent to wash soiled clothing in your hotel sink or bathtub, if necessary, can be helpful too. These can be packed with your travel-size toiletries. Lastly, consider using a daypack as your carry-on item so that you can also use it at the destination to transport extra layers and picnic items for day trips and hikes. Plan to do some shopping for gifts or items to bring home? If so, leave space in your luggage to accommodate them for the return flight. This should also keep your luggage under the weight limit so that you avoid extra fees—and the need to purchase another suitcase! Now go create some memories on your incredible, stylish vacation!

HEALTH & WELLNESS

In Treatment Escaping to a sumptuous wellness retreat for a week in Bali or Belize for a much-needed break may sound great in theory, but who has the time? If the idea of a reset that doesn’t require the time, expense and hassles of an international trip sounds appealing, you needn’t look any farther than West Austin. You can pamper your mind, body and soul without leaving Travis County. Here’s how and where you can do just that: The Daily Juice Cafe at Bee Cave’s Shops at the Galleria serves a big selection of fresh-pressed juices, made-to-order juices and smoothies. “The Skinny” (cucumber, spinach, apple) is a favorite among calorie-counters. Another is “The Warrior,” which gets its spicy kick from the jalapeño among its seven fruit and vegetable ingredients. For a full-on breakfast, the acai bowls are the best in Austin; fueling the body with antioxidants is a great way to start the day or to recharge in the afternoon. Now that you are full of energy, clearing your head is the next priority, which comes with releasing endorphins. The Mount Lakeway Trail, the Hamilton Greenbelt, or Lakeway City Park (depending on the difficulty level you can handle) are all solid contenders for getting your recommended Vitamin D time in the sun and an hour or more

One of the ways to take care of the “body” part of the mind, body and soul triad is ensuring that you love the way your skin looks and feels. Healthy, glowing, resilient skin is the achievable goal. Anyone of any age can benefit from the Moxi laser; there’s no downtime, and it restores youth and energy to your look. Looking and feeling youthful and glowing on the outside makes anyone feel happy on the inside. Thankfully, the possibilities for doing just that by revitalizing the skin are plentiful at Wink. So, whether it’s on a once-in-a-blue-moon day off or on a weekend when you have nothing to do but down tequila shots by the pool’s edge, why not treat the mind, body and soul? Invest in a “getaway” right down the road that will make you feel like a million bucks. Maybe a billion. And come Monday morning—after drinking green juice instead of gin and getting massages instead of manicures—you will be much better for it, and your skin will be glowing almost as much as your soul.
