Welcome It gives me great pleasure on behalf of the organisers of this festival, The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) to welcome you to the 36th Canalway Cavalcade at Little Venice. This event has become an important part of the London waterways scene and we know that many thousands of visitors from near and far will enjoy the attractions over the weekend. While you walk around the event, please spare a thought for all the work that IWA has done over the last 70 years to bring the waterways back from dereliction to the great visitor attraction that you can see around you, and for all the volunteers who have made this possible. The future of our inland waterways is by no means certain with doubts about long term funding, without which the many 250-year-old locks, aqueducts, tunnels and bridges could be at risk. The Canal & River Trust will soon have to renegotiate its government grant and the Environment Agency, which is responsible for many rivers including the Thames, is challenged by budget constraints.

Ivor Caplan, IWA National Chairman

so many years ago, but perhaps also the volunteers who are now working tirelessly to restore those that are derelict. While you are at Cavalcade, do visit IWA’s stand, under the flyover, next to the standing statues on Paddington Towpath, where our enthusiastic volunteers will tell you something about the work that we are doing to ensure that the benefits provided by the inland waterways are retained and increased for future generations. You can get more involved by becoming a member there and possibly volunteering to help with this valuable work.

In London the number of people living afloat is putting pressure on the waterways and impacting on those who wish to enjoy them as visitors or for recreation, health and wellbeing. IWA is working closely with CRT and other partners to help manage this for everyone’s benefit.

Have a great day and enjoy IWA Canalway Cavalcade 2018. Ivor Caplan National Chairman The Inland Waterways Association

The theme for this year’s decorated boats is ‘Canal Builders’, recognising the amazing efforts of those who planned and constructed many of the 6,500 miles of inland waterways in Great Britain

cut Plastics! a rudder and two fishing nets. I then cycled the whole length of the River Thames collecting plastic. The “water bike” was a great conversation starter and a great way to raise awareness. The campaign was a success - “You cannot escape cyclists, not even on the river”. However, cleaning up is not the solution, we need to stop this at source, rethink design and aim to achieve a circular economy; not just designing out waste but also by designing out toxic chemicals. I am cycling on the canals now and also helping festivals, councils and other agencies with their plastic free initiatives.

BBC’s Blue Planet II has definitely generated awareness about the scale and dangers of plastic pollution. Innocent sea creatures are dying after getting entangled in or eating plastic. Plastic breaks down into microplastics and nanoplastics which can penetrate organs & tissues. Every time we wash our clothing, up to 1,000,000 microfibres can leach into our waterways, rivers and oceans. Fish eat them and we eat the fish. One third of the fish sampled from the River Thames were contaminated with microfibres. Plastic is in the water we drink, the food we eat, the alcohol we drink and in the air we breathe.

As individuals, I invite you to go plastic free just for one day #plasticfreetuesday: use your own cutlery, steel drinking bottles and tankards, avoid styrofoam and other single use plastic packaging, buy in bulk, start cooking and wash clothes less frequently. Every little step helps.

But the real danger is that “microplastic & microfibres are carriers for toxic chemicals”, some of which are endocrine disruptors and can result in genetic changes and cause cancer. Studies have shown hormonal/ reproductive/ genetic issues in marine life. The impact on humans is not yet known and WHO is looking at it now.

If you have any comments, want to get involved or need support for your initiatives, please visit www.thethamesproject.org or email me at dhruv@boruah.com. Dhruv Boruah

After encountering plastic while sailing from London to Rio de Janeiro I did a lot of research and even bought my own £20 microscope. I was shocked and I crafted a wacky campaign to share my concerns. I picked up my handmade bamboo bicycle, attached two floats, a propeller, 5

rnli The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the charity that not only saves lives at sea but also on the River Thames, in flood waters and inland. The RNLI operates four lifeboat stations along the tidal reaches of the River Thames. These are Tower, Chiswick, Gravesend and Teddington. We are pleased to have representatives from the RNLI present over the weekend. The Community Safety Team is available to offer advice on how to stay safe when on and by the water, so do come and have a chat. They will also be carrying out lifejacket clinics, so please do bring yours along. This item is designed to save your life, let’s check that it can do just that.

will share our key messages to get young people thinking about how to keep themselves safe, and most importantly, what to do in an emergency. Pop along to see how far you can throw a rescue line or how quickly you can put the crew’s kit on. RNLI crew working on the Thames have to be kitted up and ready to launch on average in just 90 seconds Do you think you could manage this? We’ll have some fundraising activities too, and will be interested to talk to you about our Mayday campaign that runs throughout the month. If you think you could support the RNLI through fundraising or have some time to offer for volunteering please do come and talk to the team.

Our Youth Education Team will also be working with younger audiences, teaching them how to be safe and have fun when in or around water. Through a range of interactive activities the team

vote for your favourite boats IWA Canalway Cavalcade is such good fun for the boats and now you have a chance to get involved too. You are invited to vote for your favourite boat taking part in either one or both of our processions. It’s simple to vote; watch the boats, make a note of the name of your favourite – the PA announcers will name them as they cruise into the Pool – and the boats often have their names painted on the side. See below to find out how to vote. Your votes will be counted and the winning boat owners will receive a prize at the Awards Ceremony at 13:00 on Monday – come along and join in the applause!

Vote for the best dressed boat during the Pageant Saturday at 14:30 The arrival of the Lord Mayor of Westminster, aboard nb Lady Mildmay (owned by Laburnum Boat Club), at the Horse Bridge marks the beginning of the opening ceremony for IWA’s Canalway Cavalcade 2018 and the start of the Pageant of Boats. This year’s theme is “Canal Builders” – whether they were pioneers like Brindley or Brunel in the 18th and 19th Century or Tony Kettle in the 21st – so look out for some historic dressing up of boats and crews!

How to vote in the Pageant: Go to www.Slido.com where you’ll find the most up to date listing of participating boats; enter P737 in the box with the # and you’ll be taken to the list of boats. Scroll down till you find your favourite and click on the button to the left. It’s as simple as that! Voting will open at 14:30 and close at 18:00.

Vote for the best light display during the illuminated boat procession Sunday at 21:00 The Illuminated Procession of Boats is an opportunity for our boaters to dress their craft and light up the Pool. They are very competitive and will do everything they can to be the most dazzling spectacle of light that their 12 volt batteries and engines will allow!

How to vote in the Illuminated Procession: Go to www.Slido.com where you’ll find the most up to date listing of participating boats; enter M170 in the box with the # and you’ll be taken to the list of boats. entertainment & children's activities Entertainment is better than ever this year with three days of exciting performances in the Amphitheatre. With children’s performers in Rembrandt Gardens, cool jazz and blues on the Pontoon, original folk music in the Real Ale Marquee, there’s something to suit all tastes. Follow the Smiley Face on the Site Plan (centrefold) to find lots of things for children to do around the site. With this year’s theme of Canal Builders we are encouraging children to find out more about how our canals were built by following a trail of activities. They will meet canal builders, see how a lock works, find out about tunnels and aqueducts, build bridges and much more. A certificate will be given to each child who completes the trail. You can start at any point. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times

Keep children under control – no running by the water’s edge.

IWA Festival of Water

Thank you IWA Canalway Cavalcade is organised and staged entirely by volunteers from The Inland Waterways Association and funded by sponsors. We are therefore very much indebted to those listed below, who help us to make the weekend festival possible: Linda & Dennis Anfuso; Bespoke Boating Solutions; British Land; Canal & River Trust; Canal Experience Training; DJC Sound Systems; Domino Marquees; Hillingdon Narrowboat Association; Laburnum Boat Club; London Canal Museum; London Waterbus Company; Nissan; PaddingtonCentral; Porter & Co; Powerday; Rotherfield District Scout Activity Support Team; Simply Loos; South West Herts Narrowboat Project; The Church Army; The Floating Boater; The Floating Classroom on the Electric Barge; The Pirate Castle; Tony Tucker; Westminster Ambassadors; Westminster City Council; Wood Hall & Heward.

Volunteers needed Owing to the retirement of a number of the Pirate Castle’s Trustees this year, the Pirate Castle is currently seeking to appoint some new volunteer Trustees to fill the vacancies. We are particularly interested in candidates with a boating / mechanical background who are looking for a new challenge and feel that they have skills and experience that will be helpful in the running of our charity. For more information and to apply please contact us: info@thepiratecastle.org or andrew@thepiratecastle.org

A special thank you to IWA’s Waterway Recovery Group, who help the site services team to setup and ensure the smooth running of the event.
