Canalway a Save Our System 2010 v a l c a d e little venice 1 - 3 may
welcome Save Our System 2010 Welcome to Canalway Cavalcade 2010 which has been run by The Inland Waterways Association volunteers since 1983. It’s a boaters’ gathering, attended by more than 150 boats travelling from all over the waterways. It’s a trade show and a local festival too, with all sorts of activities for everyone to enjoy. There are bands, competitions, parades and processions and plenty to entertain the kids - boat trips, Punch & Judy shows, a Teddy Bears’ picnic, kayaking and lots more. In fact, something for the whole family to revel in. The canal network stretches all over the country from Bristol to Yorkshire, from Wales to the Fenlands. You don’t need a boat - you can walk or cycle, fish or photograph - or simply stand and admire the scenery. This marvellous system of waterways is over 200 years old and needs constant care and maintenance but government funding has been cut. Consequently there’s a real danger that this wonderful heritage of ours will decline - some canals could even be closed. So Cavalcade’s theme this year is Save our System - the name of the campaign spearheaded by The Inland Waterways Association. Its aim is to encourage everyone with an interest in waterways - societies, trusts, boat hire companies, businesses, local community groups to get together and hold events, involve councillors, MPs and the media, to publicise the effect of the cuts on the quality of local waterways. You can help too - support our stalls and entertainers and join our campaign by becoming a member of the Inland Waterways Association - pick up an application form from the IWA marquee or any information point.
But most of all - have fun here at Canalway Cavalcade and tell your friends all about it!

Giles Higgitt a much missed pirate If it wasn’t for Giles I wonder if we would still have the Pirate Club in Camden. His untimely death at the age of 55 in January this year has left a gap which can never really be filled. Giles worked for the Pirate Club for over 25 years. He was originally employed as skipper of the club’s community boat ‘Pirate Princess’, which he ran for 18 years. He then became the manager of the Club. Pirates learn skills, teamwork, self-esteem, confidence and social interaction. On the narrow boats they participate in all aspects of running the boat – steering, working locks, cooking, mooring etc. To see Giles in action with a group on board was to see encouragement and support at its best. I have seen anxious children visibly relax and gain confidence under Giles’ care and supervision. I have also seen unruly ones settle down and learn to be part of a team. Pirate Club is a member of the National Community Boats Association (NCBA), an organisation which grew from a meeting held at the Pirate Castle back in 1984. Giles took a great interest in the training of skippers for community boats and the development of recognised qualifications. Courses are held at the Castle for club volunteers and he has also helped to train skippers for other London projects. During the past few years activities at the Pirate Club have built up again and the building has been extended to provide full disability access. This was completed in 2008. Recent exciting news is that a new fully accessible boat will shortly be commissioned and the club is busy with further fund raising for this project. As well as the narrow boats the club has developed more kayaking and now has around 300 young Pirates and adults taking part. I believe that Giles has been to every Canalway Cavalcade since it started in 1983. There has always been a Pirate presence and he will be greatly missed this year. For the past few years the club has run ‘come and try’ kayaking sessions for children during the weekend. Come and visit the boats on the Paddington Towpath and hear more about the plans for the club or visit their website: www.thepiratecastle.org

what’s h Throughout the weekend we have a variety of entertainments for you. Many of the performances are given at a reduced fee in order to maximise the money we raise for the causes we support. Graham Nunn and The Church Army welcome visitors, children or adults, for a chat on their boat Narrow Escape on the Stone Wharf. Throughout the weekend there will be an exhibition of children’s art at the management offices of PaddingtonCentral, Sheldon Square. This is from a competition run by PaddingtonCentral and Paddington Waterside Partnership with local schools on the theme Life on the Canal. We have organised a range of kids’ activities, details of which can be found on page 9. You can collect more information about these activities from our Information Points - one on the South Towpath in the Pool and the other on the Paddington Towpath, near the pedestrian bridge. There will also be music - of all genres - being played around the site: by the Horse Bridge, on the pontoon in the Pool and on the Stone Wharf. In addition, during the Festival, the Puppet Theatre Barge will be performing their Puppet Show Candy Floss & Fun daily at 14:00, 15:00 and 16:00 aboard May Brent on the North Towpath. Prices: Children and concessions £8.50, adults £10.
+ If wet, the events scheduled for the Amphitheatre will move to the Entertainments Marquee on The Stone Wharf $ If you need directions to the meeting points for the walks please ask at the Information Points
* For safety reasons please avoid the towpath around the Pool on Sunday evening. The best viewing positions are from the raised pavements of the roads around the Pool.

kids’ stuff There are plenty of activities for children during the Festival - starting with an art competition for Westminster schools on the Friday. A display of the children’s contributions will be on display throughout the weekend. Activities will be situated around the site and will include games, craft activities, Punch and Judy, kayaking, pirates, trails, water safety and, on the Sunday afternoon, a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Information can be collected from either of our two Information Points, one on the South Towpath and the other on the Paddington Towpath near the pedestrian bridge (see also pages 6 and 7).
WoW Marquee
Some activities will be run under the banner of ‘WoW’ in the marquee on the Paddington Towpath. WoW stands for Wild over Waterways and is a joint project of the Inland Waterways Association, British Waterways and The Waterways Trust to introduce young people to the waterways so that can enjoy them, learn about them and value them.
Elsdale II
This is a floating classroom from West London which will be moored on the Paddington Towpath. There will be a range of activities on board, all supervised by the education team from the classroom project.
Pirates!
Children will have the chance to try kayaking on the arm of the canal beside the Paddington Towpath, near Bishop’s Bridge, thanks to the Pirate Club, Camden’s community boating project. Life jackets and full instruction will be provided. You can also make a pirate eye patch and be a pirate for the day!
The Stone Wharf
There will be some children’s activities in the entertainments marquee on Sunday and Monday (see pages 6 and 7 for timings) and the Church Army are organising children’s activities by their boat ‘Narrow Escape’ on the Stone Wharf. They will also be running the Teddy Bears’ Picnic at 3:00 pm on Sunday in the amphitheatre.
Tideway Adventurers
Is a voluntary organisation providing low cost opportunities for children, young people and community groups to go afloat. They have a stand on the Paddington Towpath.

the history of rembrandt gardens The Gardens were first laid out in the early 1950s and the original name was Warwick Avenue Gardens. The gardens were originally managed by Paddington Borough Council which was amalgamated with the boroughs of St Marylebone and the City of Westminster in 1965. In 1975 the name was changed when the City of Westminster was linked with the City of Amsterdam in Holland. There is a plaque commemorating the event on the wall opposite the Rose Garden. Works to bring the garden up to modern standards and make it compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act were carried out during 2006. This included completely demolishing the existing public toilet and staff facilities. The new toilet block has a disabled access toilet and baby changing areas. The City Council also relayed the York stone paths and entrance ramp, installing hand rails on the railings and steps. The City Council has always ensured that adequate funding is available to maintain the quality and the fabric of the gardens to high standards, recognising the value of its open spaces. The primary aim is that the parks and gardens shall remain safe, clean and aesthetically pleasing places for their residents and the commuters and day visitors who come to Westminster in their millions every year.
Canalway Cavalcade wishes to thank the Westminster City Council Parks Service for subsidised use of the Paddington Stone Wharf and Rembrandt Gardens
www.tidewaynarrowboats.com Telephone: 07875 841 423 Email: admin@tidewaynarrowboats.com Tideway Adventurers’ Narrowboat Project is a voluntary organisation and registered charity that was originally formed 25 years ago. The aim of the organisation is to provide low cost opportunities for children, young people and community groups to go afloat on England’s historic inland waterways and to learn the many skills associated with boat handling and canal navigation. As well as gaining knowledge and understanding of the environmental value of our canals and rivers, it’s also great fun! We have two 70 ft long steel narrowboats, the 12 berth Theo and the 10 berth Merlin, which are both moored near Rickmansworth on the Grand Union Canal. There is a skipper’s cabin at the stern of each boat with extra berth in each. Both vessels are self-catering with a fully stocked galley. An extra daily fee will be charged if we provide the skipper. The boats are booked by youth clubs, community groups, projects, school parties, uniformed groups and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants. Both boats are available for day/ weekly journeys and residential weekends. Groups wishing to operate the boat themselves will need to hold the Certificate in Community Boat Management. The project does not supply bedding, tea towels or waterproofs. Both boats carry the relevant number of life jackets. Why not visit the Tideway Adventurers’ stand on the Paddington Towpath and find out how you and your kids can have fun safely on our wonderful waterways. - 15 -
The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) has organised today’s Cavalcade. The IWA is a charity formed more than 50 years ago to campaign for the waterways. It believes that canals and rivers are everyone’s to enjoy and it works to preserve the heritage and ecology of the system. Over the years it’s had some stunning successes and many waterways, which were closed in the dark days of the 1950s, have recently reopened. IWA’s members and volunteers have made a huge contribution to this, in particular through its subsidiary organisation, the Waterways Recovery Group, which organises working parties of volunteer labour to support restorations. However, waterways funding is a major concern. The IWA is alarmed at the cuts to the Grant-in-aid for British Waterways for 2010/11 and is concerned that the Environment Agency, which is responsible for navigation on some rivers, will receive similar treatment. IWA believes that the threat of under investment in the waterways must be addressed by all stakeholders in the waterways now! Unless we stand up to this, we can expect more of the same. We must all defend our waterways system and you can demonstrate your support by becoming a member today. There are lots of easy ways to sign up: pop into the IWA marquee on the Paddington Towpath at this event or visit the web site: http://www.waterways.org.uk/pdf/membership_form, phone our Membership Hotline: 01494 783453 or write to the Membership Officer at: IWA, Island House, Moor Rd, Chesham, HP5 1WA. Let them know if you’ve got any particular skills you’d like to offer. Let them know other ways you think you might be able to help. Most of all, let them know you’re interested.
The continuing survival of the waterways needs the support of people just like you Has today’s event got you interested in London’s rich canal history? Then why don’t you visit the London Canal Museum near Kings Cross? It’s beside Battlebridge Basin and is located in the ice cream maker Carlo Gatti’s famous 1862 Ice House, used for storing the only cooling agent there was before fridges. Its address is 12-13 New Wharf Rd, LONDON N1 (Tel: 020 7713 0836), only a step or two away from Kings Place, London’s newest arts and office complex. It’s open all the year round Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-4pm, admission just £3 (£2.00 for seniors, students and the unwaged, £1.50 for children aged 5 - 15). There’s an exciting programme of events from monthly illustrated talks to theatre, painting, workshops and children’s activities - something for everyone with an interest in London’s waterways - here’s a sample: 16th May 1st June 19th June
Tunnel boat trips from the Museum through Islington Tunnel A joint event with Dickens House Museum - find out how canals and the great author came together Mikron Theatre Company - ‘Striking the Balance’ - a new show set against the turbulent 1960s, 70s and 80s
For more details of these and the rest of the year’s programme visit the museum’s web site at www.canalmuseum.org.uk/whatson
towpath walks
If Cavalcade has excited your interest in London’s canals then you might want to explore further. IWA volunteer guides support The Towpath Walks Society, which arranges a regular series of guided walks along the city’s canals in association with London Walks. They last just over two hours and take place on two Sunday afternoons each month, and some Tuesday evenings in summer. The walks start and finish at a tube or DLR station and cost £8 with concessions £6. You can even join one during the Festival Sunday which leaves Kensal Green Station at 2:30 pm. Or, if you’d like to get closer to the new Olympic stadium, turn up at Bromley by Bow tube station on Sunday 16th May at 2:30 pm. The walks have been going since 1977 and have so far raised more than £23,000 towards the IWA’s work. The guides give their services free and the IWA benefits financially. More information is available from Peter Finch, telephone 020 8969 9941 or visit these websites: www.walks.com or www.londonwalks.com - 17 -

Does the location look familiar? This is the Pool at Little Venice during the 1973 Boat Afloat Show, organised by the British Waterways Board and opened by Lady Westmorland. In 1970 BWB decided to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Regent’s Canal by having a show in Little Venice. It proved to be such a success that the exhibitors suggested it should become an annual event. Throughout the eleven days of the event there was a wide range of entertainments and spectacles, including water skiing and wake surfing. There was also extensive television coverage - in fact the show dominated the BBC’s Nationwide programme for 45 minutes. There were also units from Southern TV, British Movietone News and Italian TV, making a programme intended to encourage tourists from Italy to visit London and Little Venice that summer.
