welcome

Paul Rodgers IWA National Chair

So whilst this year we welcome back everyone to IWA Canalway Cavalcade 2022, we also celebrate the incredible effort put in across the association by everyone, and encourage visitors to find out how they can get involved. Pop into one of our information stands, find your local IWA branch, and see what’s going on where you are.

I’m overjoyed to welcome everyone back to this year’s IWA Canalway Cavalcade 2022. Arguably the jewel in the crown of our national events, this year’s eagerly awaited festival looks to bring back fun and celebration to Little Venice. Our events really are at the heart of the Inland Waterways Association, driving awareness of the charity and the causes we support. The crucial work we do couldn’t be done without the continued support of our members and volunteers, many recruited through these events.

4

Tom Claydon Chair, IWA Canalway Cavalcade Committee

We are working closely with the local communities, charities, and boaters to create an event that can be shared and enjoyed by everyone.

The IWA Canalway Cavalcade team and I are delighted to be back in our home of Little Venice again following a challenging two years away. Very sadly we have lost three members of our organising committee since our last physical event in 2019 and their knowledge, experience and dedication have left a big gap in our team. So this year we celebrate their memory, and the legacy they’ve left behind.

Our theme for 2022 is ‘Welcome Back’ and we’ve encouraged entrants to the pageant to dress in celebration of the return to the pool of Little Venice. So get involved in any way you can, and make sure to share your photographs on social media using the hashtag #iwacanalwaycavalcade. #iwacanalwaycavalcade

Our volunteers have continued to work hard in planning this year’s event, and we look forward to bringing back our usual spectrum of marvellous activities, stalls and entertainments.

iwa guide to green boating Want to make your boating more sustainable, but don’t know where to start? Our free guide has an introduction to electric drive boats, biofuels and our top tips. We are campaigning for greener boating to help protect the waterways for future generations.

Turn off the engine when you can: If you can, turn your engine off when you are stationary such as when you are queuing for locks. This will save you lots of fuel as well as improving the air that you breathe.

5 ways to make your boating greener Install solar panels: Solar panels will help keep your batteries topped up instead of running your engine while you are moored.

Switch to biofuels: We will be campaigning to get the cost of alternative fuels, such as HVO, down. In the meantime, if you can afford to pay a little bit extra for your fuel, you could consider starting to use it straight away.

Burn dry and well-seasoned wood: If you burn logs in a solid fuel stove, make sure that they are dry and wellseasoned. You might consider installing a pellet-burning stove. Know your speed: While you are boating, particularly on shallow canals, if you try to go too fast you will burn more fuel but will not go any faster.

children's activities Rembrandt Gardens (RG) Marquee*: There are lots of activities for children to enjoy throughout the weekend – colouring, making hats, listening to stories and more. Marisa Knight will be reading from her books which will also be for sale. The characters in ‘The Continuing Adventures of Montgomery and Dartington’, live on Blomfield Road, overlooking the pool of Little Venice. They have adventures both locally and in the city.

Pirate Castle*: Members of the Pirate Castle of Camden will be putting on a display in the Pool, after the Opening Ceremony, featuring the Youth Club demonstrating kayaking, the Upper Deckers Group and Shilpa Rasaiah demonstrating paddleboarding. They are also running Arts & Crafts sessions aboard their boat Pirate Prince. On 10th June Shilpa will be paddleboarding on the Grand Union Canal from Camden to Leicester to raise money for charity.

Church Army*: Many visitors to our IWA Canalway Cavalcade weekend enjoyed meeting Graham Nunn, who led the Church Army team for 30 years, but who sadly passed away in June last year. There will not be a Church Army boat on the Stone Wharf this year, but we will be pleased to welcome Hannah Seal, who worked with Graham for many years. She will be leading the multidenominational service on Sunday morning and the Teddy Bears’ picnic on the Sunday afternoon. Graham will be remembered on both these occasions.

The Floating Classroom on the Electric Barge*: Will be organising creative activities for everyone to enjoy, as well as their Amazing Animals Shows on Saturday and Monday. Royal National Lifeboat Institution*: This year we celebrate having Lifeboats on the River Thames for 20 years. Crew members and other volunteers will be here to teach children and adults about water safety including correct use of throw lines and lifejackets. There will also be educational activities and a chance to meet Stormy Stan dressed up as a Lifeboat crew member. Puppet Barge*: ‘My Shadow and Me’ is a cartoon created live out of nothing but darkness and light, showing an incredible journey where creatures emerge, engage and transform beautifully. A simple, theatrical blend of amazing skill, simplicity, humour and shadow magic. Scan the QR code to book your tickets now. now Late comers will not be admitted to the show.

entertainments Alarum Productions*: As a theatre company, we celebrate real life stories of women on the canals and are passionate about restoring women’s voices to their rightful place in history. We achieve this through thoroughly researched and accurately presented performances, publications, and audio recordings. We are committed to bringing entertaining, informative and affordable performances to non-arts venues. Our performances take the form of theatre, poetry and song. Through Alarum shows, communities can come together to celebrate their heritage in new and exciting ways, strengthening these through artistic engagement as well as preserving this history for future generations. The Widgeon Theatre Boat*: Come and learn circus skills with Other Half Productions. Perfect your plate spinning, heighten your hula hooping and discover the joy of juggling - everyone is welcome! Other Half are workshop leaders at the National Centre for Circus Arts. *See What’s Happening? on pp.13-15 for timings.
