Beverley Barge Preservation Society open weekend The BBPS held an open weekend at the end of March to show to the public their three boats which are moored on Beverley Beck. Syntan is to be used mainly as a static museum whilst Sun, an ex mud hopper from British Waterways, has been superbly fitted out as a trip boat for taking up to 12 passengers from Crane Hill Wharf up the River Hull towards the Driffield Navigation. Their third boat, Mermaid carries 8 passengers and will be used to do short trips from the Crane Hill Wharf mooring, up to the lock and back. It is hoped to run this each Sunday throughout the summer from 11.00 until 3.00. At the same time Syntan will be open to the public to visit and see and hear about the restoration of the barge and its part in the tanning industry in Beverley’s past. The IWA had a stand at the open weekend to support the BBPS and to spread the word about the IWA.

INLAND WATERWAYS ASSOCIATION EAST YORKSHIRE BRANCH Chairman’s report for 2013 presented to the Branch AGM Friday 21st March 2014 Your Branch has had another busy year. We continue to spread the word by taking the Branch stall to a number of local events. Not only does this enable us to show and tell visitors about the activities of the IWA but also we are able to raise funds for the branch which can be used to assist projects on the waterways in our area. BRANCH COMMITTEE Our Committee meetings have all been well attended, for which I thank our Committee members. Without their continued help and support our branch would suffer and my job would be so much harder. It is sad to hear of other branches that struggle to form a committee. We have a great deal of expertise in our Committee with our members representing the Driffield Navigation, the Pocklington Canal, the Beverley Barge Preservation Society, the East & North Yorkshire Waterways Partnership as well as attending regular meetings with the Canal & River Trust, the Environment Agency, Natural England, the East Riding of Yorkshire County Council and others. I also offer thanks to our regional chairman, Peter Scott, who is always on hand to give advice and help. I am pleased to report that Peter was re elected for another three years and also continues in his role as an IWA Trustee. If you would like to join our committee please let one of our members know. There is always a space for willing volunteers. MEMBERSHIP Our membership has remained steady throughout the year with those joining making up for the few we have lost. It is sad to report that our longest serving branch member, Sheila Nix MBE has now let her membership lapse due to poor health. Many of you will know Sheila who was a tremendous supporter of the IWA as well as the Pocklington Canal Amenity Society. Sheila was a member for 49 years. 5
SOCIAL MEETINGS We are seeing an increased number attending our monthly social meetings. I am sure this is to do with the excellent speakers we have, covering a wide range of subjects. Suggestions for speakers and/or topics are most welcome. Please let me or any committee member know if you have any topics you would like to see covered. XMAS LUNCH We were pleased to see increased numbers at our 2013 Xmas lunch. If you have thought about coming but not yet done so, why not come this year? We are a friendly bunch and it is a great way to swap tales and get to know fellow members that little bit better. Finally, make I thank all our branch members for their continued support and help with our activities. We continue to raise money for waterway groups in our area. Every penny raised is used to support local causes. If you would like to volunteer on any of our waterways, we can put you in touch with the relevant person. There is much to do from litter picking, hedge laying, painting lock gates and bridges, and even crewing tripboats. Roger Bromley, Branch Chairman -0-0-0-0-
BRANCH FUNDS. As this newsletter is now printed and distributed from Head Office the Branch no longer receives capitation to cover the cost which has, in the past, given a small surplus our only income is the small ‘profit’ which we usually make from our social meetings and money generated by sales made when we are able to take the Branch display to gatherings and fairs in the area. We do want to have funds so we can support local restoration projects and respond to appeals nationally. How do we increase our income? By increasing attendance at meetings and taking the display to more venues and having more items to sell. If you know of events coming up where the display could be used, if you have items suitable for sale, if you are willing to staff the display please contact Chris Stones. 6
WRG Driffield and Pocklington Camp IWA’s Waterway Recovery Group (WRG) runs a programme of unique week-long residential volunteering opportunities, known as ‘Canal Camps’ designed to restore the derelict canals of England and Wales to their former glory. Volunteering with WRG is a great experience for anyone who loves being outdoors and enjoys meeting people from different backgrounds and of different ages (18+). WRG offer volunteers a fantastic chance to learn new skills such as bricklaying; stone walling; machine operation and restoration techniques! Each week costs £56 which includes food and accommodation. WRG have 25 Canal Camps, 2 Clean-up weekends and a Big Dig already planned for 2014 along with over 40 weekend volunteering opportunities allowing volunteers the chance to get involved in various activities from lock restorations to towpath improvements. This year WRG are visiting East Yorkshire and carrying out towpath improvement works on the Pocklington Canal and Driffield Navigation. From the 16th-23rd August WRG volunteers will be undertaking work on two sites – constructing a new trail for pedestrians and cyclists on the Driffield Navigation, and carrying out towpath improvement work on the Pocklington Canal. It is hoped that the towpath works will create an amenity for the local community and improve access along the line of the two canals. Why not get involved … or come along and see what WRG are up to! More details can be found on the WRG website www.wrg.org.uk From Jenny Black Volunteer Coordinator Waterway Recovery Group 7
