From Manhattan to Hiroshima I made this drawing in 1985-6 as part of the series Hibakusha, the

Callaghan and other Redback artists, and we joined thousands marching for peace on Hiroshima Day. I photographed this young girl amongst the crowd. It was a very hot day and people had made hundreds of brightly coloured origami cranes as symbols of peace. The background is filled with images quoting drawings made by survivors.

In an interview with Scott Maslow in This Week*, Sam Shaw, Manhattan’s creator and executive producer, explains the gestation of the series: “Six or seven years ago, I started writing something set in the present that was about the war on terror…The more that I read about the history of military secrets on this country, and this national security machine, the more it seemed to me that the

the horror. Recently I have been watching the critically acclaimed television series Manhattan, a fascinating fictionalized account of the work and lives of those assigned to the maximum security closed community, the Los Alamos project in New Mexico. This was where the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were developed. Secrecy was enforced to such an extent that

8. Robert Parr  March Past and the Department of Prevention 1978  painted wood, steel, rubber, leather

In this work legions of soldiers march between towering barriers. Behind the barriers stand the wielders of absolute power whose dominance is ensured by the marching army. In step, uniformed, each man is individually indistinguishable; the soldiers are all faceless; the people whose power the march past acknowledges are also faceless. The monolithic force is confronted by the Department of Prevention armed with four small catapults on wheels. To confront such might with such arcane weapons must be seen as ridiculous. But, to live with dignity in a materialistic world is to appear ridiculous to that world. This interpretation of the work suggest that Robert Parr is challenging us: “Abandon the battalions; take to the catapults”.

Thoughts on Gallipoli The invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey by allied forces, including Australia and New Zealand, and the slaughter that followed happened a hundred years ago. Since the event so much has been written and discussed about it that it has entered our public consciousness: most people have strong beliefs about what should or shouldn’t have been done differently and what it has meant to Australia’s and New Zealand’s development as nations since.

somehow expressed my own personal feelings about the place and the events that happened there a century ago. Anything I (or anyone else) have produced there will also be seen through this veil of contested public property. It indeed seemed a sad, violated place but one of the positives I brought home was a sense of nature working to heal the scars of the past. 9. Euan Macleod  Sentry (skeleton)

11. Rew Hanks  The Trojan Tiger versus the Woolly Redcoats

The Trojan Tiger verses the woolly redcoats This linocut is a whimsically interpretation of a John Glover’s painting from 1834 which deceptively depicts the Tasmanian Aboriginals and Europeans living in peace. In this version the Palawa peoples are seen dancing around

a mythical Trojan Tiger preparing to invade Hobart Town. By crossing of the Derwent River they will declare war on the redcoats and reclaim ownership and their stolen lands. Rew Hanks
