CLOSE UP & PERSONAL: VICTORIANS & THEIR PHOTOGRAPHS
UNTOLD STORIES: PICTURES FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS
14 June – 13 November 2016
22 November 2016 4 June 2017
The exhibition explores how the Victorians adapted this new technology for their entertainment and quickly became obsessed by it. See photography and photographic items from the Watts Gallery Collection, including images of the Royal Family and other Victorian celebrities. Discover the rise of photography as art through the images of Julia Margaret Cameron and Henry Holiday. Interact with stereoscopic viewers (the first 3D photographic technique), on loan from London Stereoscopic Company.
Untold Stories is an exhibition about the art of collecting, offering a unique opportunity to look behind the closed doors of private collections and uncover the personal history of pictures rarely in the public eye. Paintings by famous artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) and John Singer Sargent (18561925) will sit alongside works by artists much sought after by collectors such as Thomas Cooper Gotch (1854–1931) and Alan Beeton (1880-1942).
ENGLAND’S MICHELANGELO 20 June - 26 November 2017 In 2017, the Artists’ Village will stage a major exhibition to celebrate the bicentenary of G F Watts’s birth. This dynamic display will bring together a carefully chosen selection of the artist’s most striking and impressive works, on loan from collections both in the UK and abroad. This exhibition will reinvigorate Watts’s reputation, while showcasing and exploring the wide range of his artistic genres, from symbolism, social realism and spirituality to portraiture, philanthropy and pictorial allegory.
