About

Free Self-Guided Visits

Watts Gallery opened in 1904 to display art by the great Victorian artist, G F Watts (1817-1904). Over 100 paintings are on permanent display in the Gallery including portraits, landscapes, symbolic and social realist paintings. There is also a purpose built sculpture gallery showing small studies and impressive large maquettes.

Tuesday – Friday Pre-booking required

Near the Gallery, is Watts Chapel, a unique Grade I listed building designed and built by Mary Seton Watts. It is covered in patterns and symbols. Mary involved the local community in making the decorative terracotta tiles and interior.

Curriculum All our activities support the national curriculum and post 14 exam courses. Activities can be differentiated for different key stages and to support specific themes and learning outcomes.

Exploring the collections, exhibitions and architecture supports and enriches learning across the curriculum and at all key stages. Visit the permanent collections and exhibitions or combine with a visit to the Grade I listed Watts Chapel. Download Teachers’ and Students’ notes to use on your visit.

SPECIAL NEEDS

PROJECTS

SEN

Watts Studios

Students with special educational needs are welcome at Watts Gallery. Studio Workshops and Art Detective Tours can be tailored to meet the needs of students. We also provide a special multi-sensory chapel tour which is suitable for students with visual impairments and PMLD. Please note that the walk to the chapel is quite steep. We advise all teachers to make a preliminary visit to meet with the learning team before bringing their class.

We are currently restoring the studios where G F Watts and Mary Seton Watts worked. The studios are based in their home, Limnerslease, just across the road from the Gallery. Here, we are developing new galleries and building new learning studios. Students will be able to explore traditional making techniques in art, craft and design and then try these for themselves both inside and outside.

Take Part Take part in the pre-opening project. Activities include a chance to work on design projects, create time-capsules, make ceramics for the garden, explore heritage archives and make a film. For more details contact learningofficer@wattsgallery.org.uk
