WATTS GALLERY ARTISTS’ VILLAGE Inspire cross-curricular learning through art, architecture, design and the environment at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village. A visit will support learning objectives in the national curriculum, post-14 exam syllabuses and contribute to students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. G F Watts was a famous Victorian artist, social and environmental commentator. He moved from London to Compton in Surrey with his wife, Mary Watts where the architect, Sir Ernest George, built a house for them in the Arts & Crafts style. Mary developed her practice as a craftswoman and designer and George continued painting and making sculpture. In the next few years, a chapel, gallery and working pottery were built, creating a thriving centre for contemporary art and design and employment for local people. They passionately believed that art was for everyone and that it could change lives. They helped young and emerging artists, taught art and design to people with little access to it, built a gallery for local people to enjoy and created public sculptures and monuments such as Postman’s Park in London. 1

Exhibitions 2015 - 2016 The Art of Bedlam: Richard Dadd 16 June – 1 November 2015 Visit the most ambitious exhibition of Dadd’s work for decades. Richard Dadd (1817-1886) was an exact contemporary of G F Watts. They were both students at the Royal Academy, admirers of the Parthenon Marbles and travelled abroad in the 1840s. The exhibition features brilliant works of incredibly detailed fairy lands, including Dadd’s masterpiece, The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke, generously lent by Tate. The De Morgan Collection From 4 August 2015 The Watts Gallery display of The De Morgan Collection features ceramics and oil paintings from William De Morgan (1839-1917) and Evelyn De Morgan (1855-1919). The De Morgans were close friends of the Wattses, and key figures of the Arts & Crafts Movement. The remarkable ceramics and oil paintings, on loan from the De Morgan Foundation, will provide an insight into their working relationships and reveal their extraordinary talents in multiple mediums. Brothers in Art: Drawings by Watts and Leighton 17 November 2015 – 19 February 2016 Friends for forty years, G F Watts and Frederic Leighton enjoyed one of the Victorian era’s longest and most productive artistic partnerships. Although both were celebrated painters, drawing was the skill they most admired in one another. Their drawings are imaginative records of their artistic ideals and reveal the pair’s extraordinary technical ability. Showcasing some never-before-seen masterpieces, this exhibition will bring Watts’s and Leighton’s finest drawings together for the first time.

Poetry in Beauty: The Pre-Raphaelite Art of Marie Spartali Stillman 1 March – 5 June 2016 Marie Spartali Stillman (1844–1927) was one of a small number of professional female artists working in the second half of the 19th century. She was an important presence in the Victorian art world of her time and closely affiliated with members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle. Poetry in Beauty, touring from the Delaware Art Museum, will display work showcasing her British Pre-Raphaelite training as well as the influence of Renaissance art, derived from the many years she lived and worked in Italy. 4
