Schools Programme 2012-13

ART FOR ALL LEARNING PROGRAMME

Watts Gallery houses the collection of George Frederic Watts OM RA (1817-1904), who was considered to be one of the greatest painters of the Victorian age. The original Arts & Crafts building, re-opened in June 2011 following major restoration, offers visitors a unique insight into the art, people and ideas of the 19th Century. The Gallery’s innovative and unique Art for All programme for schools, provides a rich seam of learning by using the Watts Gallery Collection and Watts Chapel to explore topics such as social history, creativity and artistic techniques. The Foyle Art for All Learning Studio Located next to Watts Gallery, the Foyle Art for All Learning Studio, offers a self-contained space in which to welcome school groups.

The workshop area is equipped with two potter’s wheels, a kiln, printing press, cloakroom, toilet facilities and outdoor seating. Watts Chapel The Watts Chapel, Compton is an Arts & Crafts Grade I listed building, designed by Mary Watts and built by the local community with her guidance. It is still owned by Compton Parish Council.

A VICTORIAN DAY AT WATTS GALLERY

A Watts Gallery interactive tour and costume workshop exploring the architecture, art, society, clothing and history of the Victorian era. The costume workshop allows the whole class to try on replica Victorian clothing inspired by the portraits painted by G.F. Watts. Students will be able to compare rich and poor, fashions and personal choice and experience the constraints of women’s clothing and undergarments. Students can direct the poses of their classmates and re-enact the paintings, taking photographs to print and take back to school.
