Nearing completion Four years after Schofield and Rothschild merged fire departments, a new shared station is set to open this fall old, so the two municipalities decided to build a new fire station on the site of the former Rothschild station to house the joint department, Olsen says. Olsen says the new department is working out well and that Rothschild has had a good history working with Schofield on projects. Merging various municipal fire departments in order to share equipment and labor costs and avoid duplicating expenses has become common in recent years. SAFER Fire District, a partnership between Weston and Rib Mountain, formed in 2014, also serves several communities that partner with the fire district.

The village of Weston is discussing whether or not to change the name of Schofield Avenue to something less confusing. Why? The problem is, many people assume that if a house or business is on or near Schofield Avenue, that it’s located in the city of Schofield. Village President Mark Maloney told the Weston Village Board he called some Weston businesses on Schofield Avenue as a test and many were convinced they were located in Schofield, not Weston as they actually were. Many people get confused already by the boundaries of Schofield, Weston and Rothschild, especially in the area around the intersection of Grand Avenue, Schofield Avenue and Bus. Hwy. 51, where the three boundaries converge at various nearby spots. “It’s nothing against Schofield. We want to get along and be nice with the neighboring communities,” Maloney said. “But we need to start telling our story.” Suggestions ranging from Westonville or just calling it Grand Avenue to naming it after the late Coach Wayne Steffenhagen were thrown out at the village meeting. No action was taken on it. Maloney said it was something the village could put out to residents to get their opinion.

Schofield and Rothschild’s Riverside Fire District is on track to have a new fire station by fall. The $5.5 million fire station is slated to be completed in September and appears to be on schedule to meet that timeline, Rothschild Administrator Gary Olsen says. So far the fire station is on budget as well, Olsen told City Pages. Schofield and Rothschild agreed to merge fire departments in 2016, forming the new Riverside Fire District on Jan. 1, 2017. The move saved money for both departments and helped them better staff the department. Schofield’s building was too small and Rothschild’s too

New supervisor named to county board
Work on the former Ponderosa Motel burned in a fire in 2015 should kick off in August, it’s developer says. Alden Emmerich told City Pages that there were some delays with state licensing but now that has been squared away and work on the site can begin in early August. The Ponderosa Motel burned down in 2015, and sat vacant until the county finally took the property via tax deed, and performed environmental assessments on it. The Community Development Authority took over the property’s redevelopment and requested proposals, eventually settling on Emmerich last year. Emmerich plans to build affordable apartments on the property.
Marathon County’s board has a new supervisor in district 17, replacing the outgoing E.J Stark. The board voted unanimously Thursday to appoint Jennifer Aarrastad to District 17. Aarrastad replaces E.J. Stark, who resigned from the board in late May shortly after an executive committee decision voted down the A Community for All resolution. Stark did not give a reason for his departure but it was abrupt. Aarrastad, currently Optical Manager at the Eye Clinic of Wisconsin, was one of three candidates for the open seat. Aarrastad was selected after a series of open interviews held at the Marathon County Courthouse.

Suspect in Weston bar shooting reaches plea deal
City Council Member Tom Neal confirmed to City Pages that he won’t be running again in 2022. Neal plans to serve out his term dutifully, but will hang it up at the end of his term next year. Neal says he isn’t sure if he will remain living in District 4, where he currently serves. Neal is on several committees and serves as the chair of the city’s Economic Development Committee.
Meetings set for public input on county ARPA funding
A trio of meetings is set for the public to weigh in on how the county should spend a pretty big federal windfall. Marathon County is expected to receive $26.3 million in American Rescue Plan Act dollars. The dollars come with a certain degree of restrictions but county leaders want to hear from the public about how the dollars should be spent. The first meeting is set for 5:30 pm Aug. 3 at the Edgar Auditorium. Another will be held 5:30 pm Aug. 10 in the Marathon County Courthouse Assembly Room, and a third at 5:30 pm Aug. 17 at the Hatley Community Center near the library, says Marathon County Supervisor John Robinson.

The suspect in a shooting at a Weston bar in 2019 has reached a plea deal with prosecutors, court records show. Sergio Retana pleaded no contest to first degree attempted homicide, recklessly endangering safety and possessing a firearm as a felon. According to police reports, Retana got into a fight May 12, 2019 with other patrons at Big Dan and Space’s Kelly Club in Weston. Another man attempted to break up the scuffle and was ultimately shot by Retana, police reports say. Other patrons wrestled Retana to the ground and took the gun from him until police arrived, court records indicate. The victim of the shooting recovered after nearly a month in the hospital. Prosecutors as part of the plea arrangement agreed to dismiss three misdemeanor charges connected to the case. Retana is slated to be sentenced Oct. 21. He has spent 806 days in jail, housed in Langlade County, a jail roster indicates.

Wausau East won’t have a varsity football team this fall, according to a press release from the Wausau School District. The school wasn’t able to field enough players to fill out a varsity team, school officials say. Instead, Wausau East will have an eight-man football team and a varsity reserve, essentially is a junior varsity team with seniors on it. The team will play whatever games it can as scheduling opportunities present themselves. Wausau East officials say this fall should be the only year there isn’t a varsity football team, and that athletic staff is working hard to build the program for the coming years. The news comes as participation in high school sports overall has been declining in the past decade, and Wisconsin shed nearly 7,000 football players between the 2008/09 and 2018/19 seasons, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The Rothschild Police Department will soon get its first police dogs, thanks to a pair of donations. K-Tech Kleening and Austin Gauge Charities donated the $26,000 needed to purchase and train two K9 units. The dogs are Irish Setters, says Rothschild Administrator Gary Olsen. The first dog goes in for training in a week, Olsen says. The dogs will be able to go in schools to help calm children, as well as being used for drug enforcement and tracking suspects, Olsen explains. The Rothschild Police Department hasn’t yet had police dogs, so it’s a first for the PD, Olsen explains.

Where did all the
YP GROUPS go?
This week’s story started with a simple question: Where did all the YP groups go? In case you’re wondering, YP stands for young professional. During the time period between 2015 and 2017, Wausau was a hotspot of young professional groups. That mimicked a national trend. It was the age of the millennials, and being young and seen doing cool things fit the generational ethos. Then, suddenly, no more. In 2021, there are a handful of groups left, and they don’t bill themselves as young professional groups. United Way’s Emerging Leaders is generally geared toward young professionals, and that’s the bulk of their membership, but really just about anyone is welcome if they really want in. The Central Wisconsin Hmong Professionals group is similar. Nothing about “young” in the title, but a look through the group’s Facebook photos generally revealed younger individuals. But otherwise, many of the groups disappeared. Urban Pulse, aimed at younger millennials at the time, is no more. The Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce’s group disappeared. (Chamber President Dave Eckmann told City Pages it is being replaced by a new model that will involve the Clark Island former power building. Details about what that means exactly were not forthcoming.) And during that YP era, there was a statewide YP Week, for which Wausau had a pretty heavy involvement in for a couple of years. Pushed by Milwaukeebased YP group Newaukee, that appears to be diminishing too. The YP Week website lists a conference for October 2020; none for 2021. Sources in the Milwaukee area say even Newaukee isn’t much of a YP
group anymore, instead focusing on assisting younger workers with employment. So, why? Where did they all go?
Long gone
I started the research for this story by asking a question on my Facebook page: Where did all the YP groups go? The responses I received were interesting. Many folks seemed to boil it down to a single thing, but of course no one agreed on what that one thing was. Some of the reasons folks cited: • Aged out: More than one made this comment. YP groups attracted unmarried millennials looking to connect with others. Now those same millennials grew older, got busier, in many cases married and started families, and time became scarce. • Problems with “young” and “professional”: Both words are pretty nebulous, and probably defined differently depending on who you ask. Urban Pulse was generally for younger millennials; the chamber’s group allowed anyone under 45. And what is a professional, exactly? Once it was the realm of doctors and lawyers; some still have that perception, so the term could be off-putting to many. Am I young enough, or professional enough? • Ugh, networking: That’s part of that professional word: many said the idea of networking made them want to vomit. People were attracted to the groups because they want to connect with people. But they sure don’t want someone trying to sell them insurance. • Meet market: Many saw them as meet markets

(places for singles to meet other singles). As one person put it: “People dropped the pretense and just started using dating apps?” Early attempts at YP groups often descended into binge drinking and hookup fests. Groups in that 2015-2017 era worked hard to curb that and make it more about connection. It was us GenXers who screwed up the YP groups before. Sorry about that. • Politics instead?: One commenter mentioned that most of her friends of that age group just went into politics. That’s not far off the mark. Since the 2016 election, the Wausau area has seen an influx of younger folks entering politics. Far more than this reporter has witnessed in some time. • Key people moved away: Groups and events don’t happen without someone making them happen. And many of those folks moved away. But that signals something different: if no one jumped in to take their place, it sends a message that it’s not that important in the first place. One young person said she was sorry most of those groups were gone. It might have led her to stay in Wausau.

Between 2015-2017, YP groups flourished. Now most of them are gone. What happened?
more than half told Voss they’d been in town less than a year. But, running a group like that can wear on a person. Voss says she needed help to keep it running, and while enthusiasm for participating in their events was high, queries about volunteering were met with silence, Voss says. “With my own busy schedule it just was not sustainable to do by myself,” Voss says. The Chamber’s group gained a lot of momentum when former tv reporter Nick O’Brien ran the group. He latertook his talents later to MCDEVCO, starting the SOUP series in Wausau which brought people of all ages to unused buildings where participants voted on project proposals and enjoyed soup from a local restaurant. No one is really doing the same thing in Wausau now, and O’Brien now lives in Milwaukee. O’Brien says there isn’t likely any one reason why most of the groups aren’t here any more. But the key people leaving — who O’Brien calls connectors — might be part of the reason. The point, O’Brien says, is fostering relationships in a genuine way. Voss says she found something similar — there was a consensus in the Urban Pulse group that it should have nothing to do with business. “There is definitely a need for it in the community,” Voss says.
Emerging leaders
The United Way’s Emerging Leaders group, started in 2009, is still going quite strong with more than 450 members. The group is kind of a young professionals group — the United Way avoids using the term and though the bulk of its members would fit into that category, no one is really turned away. United Way Emerging Leaders Organizer Sarah Laes says the group had a 55-year-old woman join an event, and told City Pages
the woman was very pleased with how welcoming everyone was. That said, the group is primarily those in the Millennial generation, and they’re not seeing as many GenZ folks join. Emerging Leaders has three aspects to it — service and leadership are just as important as making connections, but often the three complement each other, Laes says. People will volunteer for something but end up making friends in the process, Laes explains. The group managed to stay strong even during the pandemic, Laes says. While in-person contact is important, of course, many participated in virtual meetups hosted by Emerging Leaders and the reaction was quite positive, Laes told City Pages. Members must donate at least $100 to the United Way in order to join. The funds support the United Way’s mission. That connection is important. Laes says that at social events Emerging Leader ambassadors are sure to identify new members and make them feel welcome. Laes herself talks about the importance of that. “I’ve been in Wausau four years now,” Laes told City Pages. “I really like the area and thankfully through my position at the United Way I was able to meet so many people. But if I had just worked a regular 9-5 job, I don’t know if I would have had that opportunity.”
Connection as economic development Incoming Community Development Director Liz Brodek has some views on why most YP groups have started to fade. She points to Newaukee founder Jeremy Fojut, who says YP groups were more about life stage than age. “A lot of the YP groups were millennial-driven,” Brodek says. “They’re getting older now with more established careers. The reason they existed
was to further careers and establish friendships.” Also troubling was how to connect people who didn’t have normal job schedules, and also the idea of “young professional” in the first place. “Who is young, and what is a professional?” Brodek asks. The other problem with the groups was succession — many didn’t have much of a plan for who would lead if the current leader left, or in the case of Urban Pulse, they tried but no one was interested in taking the helm. In other words, many people liked being part of the group but were less interested in the work that went into keeping them going. That said, connection is a pretty important part of economic development. How that connection could work in Wausau post-COVID and post-YP groups is something that’s still a bit vague, but Brodek says figuring that out will be important as the area looks to attract a young workforce. It’s likely those groups will form around shared activities, or other shared idenities other than being young and having a job. In Milwaukee, Brodek says, many connection events are beginning with mindfulness as part of the practice. And the Newaukee founder Fojut is working on an app called LikeMinded that uses a personality quiz to connect people with similar mindsets for socializing. Brodek cites a study called The Soul of the Community, which found the three most important drivers of attachment to a community are openness, aesthetics and social offerings. With many newcomers complaining of having a hard time breaking into the social circles of Wausau, finding a way to connect new people to the community will be a challenge that has economic development consequences. It probably won’t be a YP group, but something will need to fill the void.

Jolt: you’ll need one to get through this film Jolt | Amazon Prime | 91 minutes | R I had a lot of hopes for Jolt when I first pressed play on the film in my Amazon account. The premise is pretty interesting: A woman who from a very early age has no filter on her violent tendencies. If someone annoys her, that little voice inside of us all that restrains us from realizing our thoughts in any real way doesn’t exist in Lindy’s brain. So instead, she wears a suit with wires that gives her a jolt (ha, get it?) of electricity any times she feels such a tendency, controlled by a small handle. Just press the button and all the violence she’s imagining is wiped away. Of course, this has some holes in it itself. If she has the impulse control to press a button to stop her violent tendancies, couldn’t she just… you know, not do the violent thing? Wouldn’t the shock, which she administers to herself, make her more angry? (This is, by the way, after apparently years of government experimentation in which somehow they don’t realize they should probably restrain her well, stopping her from the crazy number of researchers she maims and kills. But I digress.) All that aside, I really do think Jolt in the right hands could have been a fascinating movie. With skilled writing and top notch directing, it could have been an amazing thought experiment. Instead, we get this. And it is not that. Not at all. What proceeds is instead something that would have been embarrassing on late night television in the 80s. It’s hard to fathom how something like this gets made when even television series have much higher quality. So the story goes something like this: After montage of
her troubled childhood and adolescence, we cut to Lindy (Kate Beckinsale) trying to talk herself into going on a date. She tries to explain to Justin (Jai Courtney) how she’s not ready to go on a date, only for him to win him over with his quiet charm. (Somehow he’s an accountant but built like Arnold Schwarzenegger.) You can guess how this goes from her. She reluctantly sees him again, falls in love with him, worries he will discover her deep dark secret (someone a violent woman with no impulse control never made the news?) and he does and is cool with it, then he turns up dead. Since she fell hopelessly in love with him after two dates (or I guess, one and a half, since she left early from the first one?) she of course has to get revenge. Oh and a
pair of cops are after her thinking she killed him, which she disuades them by beating them up and leading them on a high-speed car chase? Yeah, I didn’t get it either. All that sounds kind of like a The Fast and The Furious movie — not good, but at least entertaining. But Jolt is even worse: it’s just flat out boring. I’m normally not a two-screen person. If I watch a TV show or a movie, I watch it, saving the phone for later. But I found myself on my phone a lot in this film, because it somehow manages to make car chases and violence boring. Jolt is the worst kind of B movie. It’s not so bad that you can amuse yourself making fun of it. Just bad enough that you wish you were doing something else.
