Flyte’s Fieldstones Farm Day Camp offers area youth hands-on culinary and farm lessons
By Deb Sadowski Are you looking for an activity for your 7-12 year old child this summer that is totally different than anything they have ever done before? Do you want your child to learn some important life skills while still having tons of fun? Then Flyte’s Fieldstones Farm Day Camp may be the answer. At Farm Day Camp the youth will develop confidence and character through historic farm “work”, exploration, and play. Here, children learn to care about the importance of farming, cultivating and harvesting fruits/vegetables, and learn farming techniques that help keep a positive balance between the planet we live on and us. The children will participate in hands-on culinary and creative activities that connect them to food, farming, and nature. The activities include farm games, making your own soap, handmade candles, campfire building, nature crafts, fishing lure and pole construction, farm-to-table gardening, solar cooking, crafts, outdoor fun, and much more. The Farm Day Camp provides your child with the opportunity to learn valuable life skills, make new friends, and discover new interests, all while immersing them in a historic local century farm. When Chris Langenfeld was asked why he liked teaching the farm camp, he replied, “I like teaching farm camp because it helps kids connect their food to the land. A lot of kids today are disconnected from the farm. They don’t really understand where their food comes from or what it takes to grow it. Everything is connected to everything else, whether we like it or not. Once kids get that, they tend to care more for the land since that is where everything they eat comes from.” On the day Waushara Argus/Resorter Reporter Deb Sadowski visited the farm, children were learning how to make their own bamboo fishing poles, then how to tie on a hook. The youth were taught about making a huge variety of campfires from a council campfire to a teepee campfire. In addition, the children spent time in the kitchen with Linda Roberts making their own lunch from farm fresh products. In the afternoon it was time to fish with their new poles at the pond. Each session has a unique program theme. The program is being repeated both Tuesday and Thursday of the same week. Here is an example of what they are offering this year: • Fire and Soap: Kids who like crafts and mixing things together will love this session.
Kylie and Nolan Thoran get their bamboo fishing poles ready for fishing line while attending the Farm Day Camp at Flyteʼs Fieldstones.
Using food grade glycerin, soap base and essential oils, everyone will make their own custom soap. In addition, they will be able to make their own real candles from bees wax. • Ye-Ole Fishin’ Hole: Fishing poles, lures, and campfires are the focus of this session. Using materials provided, kids make their own fishing lure and fishing pole. Once completed, they test their gear in Flyte’s Fieldstones fishing hole. • Campfire Masters: Campfire building is a lost art. When children attend the session, they will learn how to build different Casey Burrows, Skye Hopkins, and Makenna Rettler prepare to go fishing with their campfires with their team, with every child required to completed homemade bamboo fishing poles. The vacation bible school at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wautoma, was held June 24-26. Pictured with Eisch are: Abigail McCardell, Josh Konczal, Addie Smykal, Anneliese Mauger, Marianna Mongan, Ricky Button, Foster Skweres, Patrick McCardell, Josh Mongan, Joey Button, Brynn Skweres, Sophia Mauger, Trinity Mongan, Jayden King, Edward McCardell, Emily Button, Louisa Skweres, Ashley Caswell, Delylah Davis, Trevelyan Davis, Anna Caswell, Savana Konczal, and Maddie Peterman.
undone by waterfowl.” Invasive species can crowd out native species, disrupt lake ecosystems, and interfere with boating, fishing and other recreation. The main way that invasive species and fish diseases such as viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) spread to new waters is aboard boating and fishing equipment and with live fish or water moved from one waterbody to another. The inspectors, who have been trained through Wisconsin’s Clean Boats, Clean Waters program, will demonstrate the required prevention steps boaters must take, provide educational prompts to remind them of these steps, and talk about Wisconsin invasive species and VHS laws. Boaters found practicing good boat hygiene can be rewarded with a free boating towel. Boaters, anglers, and others enjoying Wisconsin waters are required to do the following: •INSPECT boats, trailers, and equipment. •REMOVE all attached aquatic plants and animals. •DRAIN all water from boats, vehicles, and equipment. •NEVER MOVE plants or live fish away from a waterbody.* *Limited exceptions apply. Visit www.dnr.wi.gov and search for “bait laws.” “We’ve stopped the flow of invasive species into the Great Lakes since new laws governing ballast water discharge were implemented in 2006,” Wakeman added. “We can make similar strides among inland waters with the continued cooperation of boaters.”

Sixth Annual Boat Landing Blitz tackles aquatic invasive species Citizen volunteers and aquatic invasive species experts will be teaming up to educate boaters and conduct free boat checks during the weekend of July 4 at boat landings throughout Wisconsin to assure the boaters do not accidentally spread Eurasian water-milfoil, zebra mussels, and other aquatic invasive species (AIS). This is the sixth annual Landing Blitz in Wisconsin where inspectors will be stationed at more than 200 high use boat landings from July 4 through July 6 to help boaters understand Wisconsin’s invasive species laws and what they must do before leaving a landing. Inspectors come from a wide partnership of citizen volunteers, state and local AIS staff, wardens and water guards, and a variety of lake associations, organized by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the UW-Extension’s Clean Boats, Clean Waters program. Last year, nearly 18,000 boats were inspected and over 39,000 people contacted during the holiday. The Boat Landing Blitz will be conducted at Waushara County lakes, including the White River Lake Upper Millpond (West Branch of the White River). “Most Wisconsin lakes remain free of invasive species. Recent research shows boats, and not ducks or other aquatic birds, move invasive species,” said Wisconsin’s Statewide Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator Bob Wakeman. “Consequently, boaters can protect lakes by taking a few minutes to clean their boats and trailers and know their efforts aren’t being

Chronic Disease Management Program to be held in Wild Rose There are still some spots available for the upcoming Living Well with Chronic Conditions program being held at the Wild Rose Community Center, starting Wednesday, July 9. Ever had trouble dealing with pain and fatigue? Or had trouble doing things you used to enjoy due to a new physical ailment? When we have a chronic condition, we are faced with new challenges and limitations, unfamiliar situations, and perhaps new routines that include more medical visits, tests, treatments, and/or medications than before. This program may help to deal with all that having a chronic condition hands us. Living Well with Chronic Conditions is a program designed to be very interactive. It’s a great way to obtain information, learn new skills, share, and learn from others in the class. During the six week program (2-1/2 hours each time), you’ll learn new ways to manage and cope with ongoing chronic health conditions like arthritis, back problems, or heart/lung disease. Some of the topics covered include exercise and healthy eating, dealing with difficult emotions, learning to accomplish things you want to do in small, doable steps, and using your mind to manage symptoms.
Evidence-based research has shown that those who attend a Living Well program improved their health behaviors like exercise and better eating, became more effective in communication, and increased their involvement and participation in activities they once enjoyed. Those who attend are better able to manage pain and fatigue, are less depressed over their health, and have fewer trips to the emergency room, fewer hospitalizations, and shorter stays when they are hospitalized. This program may be able to give you the same results. According to Stanford University where the program was developed, “There are two ways of moving forward…either we can allow our illness to manage us and our lives, or we can learn to manage it, and get our life back.” Start managing your chronic condition and register for the next Living Well with Chronic Conditions workshop scheduled to be held at the Wild Rose Community Center every Wednesday evening from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., starting July 9 and ending August 13. For more information or to register, call the Aging and Disability Resource Center toll free at 1-877-883-5378.

Fourth of July Pet Safety Tips by Kim Salerno, President and Founder of TipsWithPets.com The Fourth of July is one of the most stressful and potentially dangerous times of the year for pets. While you and your family, friends, and neighbors are celebrating the holiday with fireworks, pets are finding these festive activities anything but celebratory. Many pet parents assume that if their pet is not afraid of thunder or other loud noises, fireworks will not bother them. This is not necessarily true. Even pets who normally are not bothered by thunder and other loud noises are often frightened and panicked by the cumulative effects of the fireworks, the excited voices outside, and being left alone inside the house. If pets are left outside and unattended, the noise and raucous often drives them to run away. In fact, the July 4th holiday is a very busy time for animal shelters across the U.S. They report taking in a higher number of dogs that run off during firework festivities. In addition, many police stations log higher volumes of stray dog calls and barking complaints on July 4th compared to any other day of the year. By planning ahead and taking some common sense precautions, you can help ensure your pet is happy and safe this Fourth of July. •Do not take your pet to fireworks displays. •Do not leave your pet alone in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects, even death, in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not
provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen. However, if your pet is most comfortable in the car, some pet parents find that driving around with their pet in the car helps to calm their pet. •Keep your pets in your home in a comfortable and quiet area with the shades drawn. If your pet is crate trained, then their crate is a great choice. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you’ve removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep your pet company while you’re attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations. •If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays. •If your pet seeks comfort in a bathtub, under a bed or other small space...let them. Do not try to lure them out. If the space is safe and it makes them feel more secure, let them be. •Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn’t leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death. •Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.
July 4th Fireworks Safety starts with common sense Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise teens if they are using fireworks. •Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks. •Fireworks should only be used outdoors. •Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks. •Know your fireworks. Read the caution label before igniting. •Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them. •Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. •Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks. •Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water. •Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can. •Avoid using homemade fireworks or illegal explosives: They can kill
you! •Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department. And note these special safety tips, if using sparklers: •Always remain standing while using sparklers. •Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers. •Never hold, or light, more than one sparkler at a time. •Never throw sparklers. •Sparkler wire and stick remain hot long after the flame has gone out.

HUNT YOUR OWN PROPERTY THIS YEAR! 220 ACRES FOR SALE
Enjoy a quiet rural setting in this beautiful 4 bedroom custom built home on 16 acres. This 3600 square foot two story
home offers an open concept livingroom / kitchen, main floor master bedroom/suite and laundry. Upstairs has 3 large bedrooms with walk in closets, full bathroom and linen closet. The home features 9' ceilings, plaster walls, built in book cases throughout, wood burning fireplace, hardwood floors, oversized bathtubs, custom kitchen cabinets and many design elements that make this home very comfortable. Winters are enjoyable in this home with in-floor heat in basement and in the 3 car garage. This home also offers a 600 square foot home office / guest room above the garage. The basement is unfinished but does provide plenty of storage and a large open space as an added play area - the basement has 9' ceilings and is very warm in the winter. Basement is plumbed for a full bath. There are front and back covered porches featuring designer concrete tiles - no maintenance - gorgeous! The front porch is 8 x 46 and the back porch is 7 x 24. This property also features a 100 year old barn with newer roof and floor. It sits adjacent to the house and was reroofed to match the house. There is space behind the barn to fence off for a pasture. There is a matching smaller "kids" shed next to the house - it has a garage door for access and a "playroom" upstairs. These buildings and the home are nestled in mature oaks. The front of the property is tree lined which offers extensive privacy. Centrally located in the state it makes an ideal location for regional or statewide employment. Located 1 hour N of Madison and 35 min S of St. Point. For outdoor recreation, this home is situated within walking distance to a beautiful clear lake, public snowmobile trail and public hunting grounds. Excellent school district, wonderful community and great neighbors. We are asking $399,000. There is an additional "guest cottage" adjacent to the property that can also be purchased for a caretaker or in-law arrangement or could be used for rental income. This home is 1200 square feet of living space above a 4 car heated garage situated on one acre. We are asking $510,000 for both homes.
For additional information or to see this home call Scott at 608-572-1697
