Which of Waverley Care’s services stands out to you the most and why? I view all of Waverley Care’s services as part of a package so it would be wrong to single one out. I suppose that because Milestone is under funding review at the moment it is most often on my mind. What message would you give to a young person about HIV? HIV is not a fear of the past but a very real threat right now. Learn about HIV, learn how to protect yourself and, if you are worried, get tested – the sooner the better. What is you favourite food and drink? I like eating fish, washed down with a glass of dry white wine. I am partial to the odd gin and tonic as well. Name 3 things you want to do before you die. I want to sail the Atlantic, motorcycle to the foothills of the Himalayas and see my granddaughter grow up to be a healthy and happy young woman. (She is just over a year old and beautiful.)

Tom Wood became the Chair of Waverley Care’s Board of Trustees at the end of August 2008. Former Deputy Chief Constable of Lothian and Borders Police, Tom lives in Edinburgh with his wife and has two children and a granddaughter.
Who inspires you? A lot of people inspire me. I am attracted to courage and loyalty as traits to be admired. John Muir, the great naturalist, is a hero of mine as is Earnest Shackleton, the polar explorer. Funny thing is, the older I get, the more aware I am of the courage and fortitude of ordinary people. That is one of the things that attracts me to Waverley Care, both its service users and its staff. In a world of flim-flam and superficial people, what Waverley Care does matters!
Waverley Care in the Highlands Building on our work in Scotland’s Central Belt, Waverley Care is pleased to have the opportunity to develop its work across the region covered by NHS Highland which includes Argyll and Bute. The majority of the region is rural in nature with Inverness being the main urban centre. From 1 November we will have an office based in Inverness city centre at 34, Waterloo Place. The services we plan to operate from there will include both support services to people living with HIV, as well as prevention services. We are extremely pleased to have this opportunity to work in partnership with colleagues from NHS Highland, Argyll and Bute.
NHS Higland, Argyll and Bute covers from Kintyre in the south-west to Caithness in the north-east, serving a population of 300,000 people.
New Patron – Bob Chilcott
Waverley Care recently launched a new food and cookery course. The course aims to teach people living with HIV or Hep C more about nutrition and food preparation to help them improve their diet and, in turn, improve their overall health.
We are delighted to announce that Bob Chilcott has accepted our invitation to be a patron of Waverley Care.
Rik Hodgson, Employment and Skills Worker, said “We are running the course in our activity room using microwaves and a couple of baby belling cookers. The idea is that we cook up some real ‘pukka tukka’ in very basic kitchen conditions so that the group feel that they would be able to cook the same meals in their kitchens at home. We hope to run the group a few times a year.” Dietician Tracy Russell from the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh and Stuart Muir, Head Chef from Harvey Nichols, recently made guest appearances on the course to encourage participants to alter unhealthy eating habits and improve health and wellbeing. Thank you to Tracy and Stuart and also thanks to Scotmid for their support of this project.

Described by the Observer newspaper as “a contemporary hero of British Choral Music”, Bob Chilcott has worked tirelessly over the past thirteen years as a full-time composer and choral conductor. He first supported Waverley Care in January 2004 conducting singers in a ‘Come & Sing’ workshop. Since then, Bob has conducted three other ‘Come & Sing’ events for us and has dedicated two choral pieces to Waverley Care – ‘You are my God’ and ‘The House of the Rising Sun’. We are keeping Bob busy at the moment as a judge in our ‘Sing a New Song’ Carol Writing competition and we are looking forward to him leading the ‘Come & Sing’ choir on the day of the final, Saturday 27th November. We hope to see many of you there.

Volunteering Group Work We have volunteers of all ages but, at 80, Lil is one of the most senior of those dedicating their time to helping those living with HIV in Scotland. Perfectly at home shaking a collecting bucket around the Pleasance Courtyard during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Lil also donates her time to help with the youngsters in our Children and Families Project. She has been volunteering with Waverley Care for 17 years. Volunteers giving their time to help our trained staff with the weekly support groups is a key part of ensuring the groups run as effectively as possible. Groups which use volunteers include our children and families group, women’s group and our walking group. Having a volunteer involved means that the support worker does not have to worry about the practical issues of making cups of tea or sorting out equipment. Additionally, if someone is new to the group, a volunteer can act as a buddy to provide answers to questions and to make sure they feel welcome and included. It frees up the member of staff to be able to focus on the group and the emotional support needs of the individuals within it.
Lil receives a nice surprise for her 80th birthday
For more information about volunteering at Waverley Care, please phone 0131 556 9710 or email director@waverleycare.org.
International AIDS Conference 2010 197 countries were represented at the 18th World AIDS Conference in Vienna between 18th – 23rd July. One of the 19,300 participants was Jonathan Creel, manager of our Milestone respite unit who presented information on some of our work in Africa. The conference is the premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as policy makers, people living with HIV and other individuals committed to ending the pandemic. Jonathan explored many themes during the conference in the seminars and lectures he attended. Most notably he gathered a wealth of interesting information on growing older and living longer with HIV, co-infection with Hepatitis C, and women and HIV. HIV campaigner and international Scottish singing star, Annie Lennox spoke at one of the press 4 Positive Interest
conferences which launched the conference. She talked of the effect of HIV stigma on those living with the condition and spoke of hearing about the impact on a young Scot, Steven. Steven is a 14 year old boy living with HIV who is supported by Waverley Care. We were delighted to hear that he had made such a moving impression on Annie. See her comments at www.waverleycare.org/content/videos/197.

Virtual Gifts We all know the difficulty of finding the ideal present for the person in our life who has everything. Many of us also know the feeling when we receive a present that we know we will never use. So, why not give a Waverley Care Virtual Gift this year instead? Our virtual gifts are Waverley Care’s services neatly packaged into unique and meaningful presents. They start from as little as £10 for a reel of Tartan Ribbon. Each reel produces 300 ribbons which are then distributed throughout the year to raise awareness of HIV and raise funds for our work. Alternatively, at £15, our Gardening Gift is perfect for a greenfingered relative and will help to maintain our community garden as a peaceful and reflective environment.
Visit our website and click on ‘support us’ and then on ‘virtual gifts’ to see the full range of virtual gifts and full details on how they work. In brief, just pick your gift and card and we will send you a voucher to pass on to your gift recipient. This will tell them about the huge difference your gift will be making in Scotland.

Focus on: Positive Scotland Positive Scotland is a joint project delivered by Terrence Higgins Trust and Waverley Care and is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
A joint project between Terrence Higgins Trust and Waverley Care
The aim of Positive Scotland is to support people when they are facing change or experiencing anxieties about the future; this could be for a number of reasons such as: • ageing with HIV and/or Hepatitis C • being recently diagnosed • starting medication • thinking about returning to work or education • feeling isolated • experiencing discrimination. These are common experiences for people living with HIV and/or Hep C and Positive Scotland offers support through such difficult times to enable people to make informed decisions that are right for them. At Waverley Care we are supporting people in Edinburgh and Lothians, Fife and the Borders. Neil Bird offers support to gay and bisexual men whilst Rik Hodgson is supporting the needs of people looking to seek new employment or skills. Rik also provides training and information to employers, advising them about their rights and the responsibilities of employing people living with HIV and/or Hep C.

Jane’s Story Jane was recently diagnosed with HIV. As is common, Jane’s HIV diagnosis had led to feelings of guilt and very low self-esteem which meant she had developed crippling depression. Jane was not working or in education so she had too much time to dwell on negative thoughts and an unsettled home situation further impacted on her mental health. Overall she was not feeling positive about life or the future. Jane was referred to Rik in our Positive Scotland Employment and Skills project. After meeting with Jane to understand her situation, Rik suggested that she apply to attend a project offered by another charity we work alongside. The project offers training in horticulture, conservation, maintenance skills, ITC/admin and life skills for people with mental health problems. Rik accompanied Jane to the project for her to meet some of the staff and volunteers and consider whether this was something that she would like to engage in. After her tour, Jane was keen to get involved and so she and Rik completed the application form. Rik wrote Jane a reference and her application to attend the project was quickly approved. Jane has been attending the project three days a week for a couple of months now. She has already learnt a lot of new skills and is feeling so much more positive about life.
Introducing... Liz Liz Marr is Manager of Care Services at Waverley Care Milestone, our residential respite unit.
L iz joined Waverley Care in 1995. Her role involves managing the care team, ensuring high standards of care and overseeing referrals and admissions. She also finds time to provide one-toone and group support to service users.
Why did you choose to work for Waverley Care? When I took the post at Milestone it involved palliative (end of life) care which I had mostly worked in since qualifying. It presented a new challenge to me though because I had never cared for anyone with HIV. It just felt like the job would be a perfect fit and I soon found out that it was. Is there anything that frustrates you about your job? Yes! After 15 years of working in the HIV sector stigma continues to be an ever-present issue.
What did you do before you worked at Waverley Care? Before qualifying as a nurse, I worked in a chemist, a bakers and a grocers. Once a qualified nurse, I progressed to qualify as a RMN (Registered Mental Nurse) and have worked in oncology at the Edinburgh Western General Hospital, the Psychiatric Day Hospital at the Edinburgh Royal Victoria Hospital and have worked in nursing homes. When not working, what do you spend your time doing? Socialising with family – there are quite a lot of us. I love reading, watching movies (particularly Hitchcock but I’ve been known to watch the odd rom com), singing and dining out with good company. What are you currently reading? ’One Day’ by David Nicholls. I can highly recommend it. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? I would love to still be working in a nursing or social care role and be doing pretty much what I’m doing now with the addition of three holidays a year to a little holiday home in the Vendee region of France.
Thank you to... Cruden Foundation Limited, Edinburgh Children’s Holiday Fund, The Hope Trust, J K Young Endowment Fund, LankellyChase Foundation, The Mainhouse Charitable Trust, The Moffat Charitable Trust, The Stafford Trust and the Widowers’ Children’s Home Trust for their much-valued donations. Festival Review It’s been another fantastic Edinburgh Festival Fringe for Waverley Care and we look on target to beat the £65,000 raised last year.

Our bucketshakers had another bumper year at The Pleasance with lots of performers making a huge difference by encouraging their audiences to donate. The Pleasance also organised a brilliant night of comedy with the Tartan Ribbon Comedy Benefit. Once again tickets sold out.

Another sell-out night of comedy was the ‘Off the Kerb Comedy Gala’ at the Festival Theatre. Hosted by Kevin Bridges and Shappi Khorsandi the night was also filmed for BBC3. Kevin Bridges and pub landlord, Al Murray, held additional shows which raised funds for Waverley Care, whilst comedians Ava Vidal, Joe Simmons and Michael Topping added to the fundraising. New Town Bar’s Sunday FUNdraisers ran for the four Sundays of the Fringe with some of the Fringe’s top acts making an appearance.

Loud & Proud raised the roof at Greyfriars Kirk with their ever-popular a capella performance, ‘Loud & Proud on the Fringe’. Finally, Mayfield Salisbury Church played host to a massed ‘Come & Sing’ choir who performed a programme of Choral Classics under the baton of SCO Chorusmaster Greg Batsleer.

Music came from ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Oliver!’. Thanks to Neil Metcalfe, Stuart Hope, Martin Ritchie, Pilrig St Paul’s Church and members of Edinburgh Music Theatre.

World Aids Day 2010 1st December every year is World AIDS Day. It is a day that is internationally recognised to allow individuals and organisations to increase awareness, fight prejudice, raise money and improve education. This year’s World AIDS Day theme is ‘Act Aware’ and encourages people to take action to tackle HIV prejudice and to protect themselves and others from HIV transmission. 33.4 million people are living with HIV worldwide 83,000 of whom are in the UK. 5,000 people are living with the virus in Scotland and approximately a quarter of these people are undiagnosed and therefore unaware of their HIV status. Those that do know they are HIV positive face the daily challenge of HIV stigma. HIV stigma is often the result of ignorance about how HIV is transmitted, judgements being made about infection routes, a lack of understanding of what it’s like to live with HIV, or an unfounded fear of becoming infected. Stigma or prejudice about HIV in society means that people living with HIV keep the burden of their secret and feel judged and ashamed. This damages their self-confidence and self-esteem. In essence, it causes misery and hinders people from living a normal life. You can help fight the stigma by joining Waverley Care at the World AIDS Day Community Gatherings. See our Fundraising diary for details.
