Letter from the Editor I’d like to start by saying a big thank you to everyone who took the time to read Issue 1. We received some great feedback and I’m more than happy to be introducing you to Issue 2. You may recognise some of the early layouts, and the Must Have products page. These will be regular features in the next few magazines. We also have another detailing ‘Big Question’ that considers Orange Peel as a Fashion Statement. The majority of this issue focuses around a 3000 mile trip from the UK, through France and Andorra, to Spain…and back. All in the name of testing wax. Sadly I couldn’t make it on the trip but Richard did a fantastic job out there and brought back some jaw dropping pictures. We also have an interesting way of saving over £40 on shampoo. MUST HAVE
Save time and stay warm this winter! We’ve selected 3 products that will take a great deal of pain out of the weekly wash.
Winter Products
Optimum No Rinse When talking about must have winter products, Optimum No Rinse is at the top of the list. With its ability to clean dirt and grime safely from a single bucket, No Rinse eliminates the need to use a hose pipe or pressure washer. Simply wash and dry each panel before moving onto the next. It’s effortless, it’s easy and it’ll save at least half an hour on the weekly wash. Available from: www.exoticdetail.co.uk
Price: £14.95
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Spritz Sealant Another product designed to save time during the winter months. Wolfgang Deep Gloss Spritz Sealant works along the same lines as Auto Finesse Tough Coat. Producing a highly protective layer in as little time as possible, we were able to apply two layers in the same time it would take to apply a single layer of wax.
Available from: www.exoticdetail.co.uk
Price: £13.95
Poorboys Spray and Rinse Wheel cleaning in winter can be quite a chore, especially when using No Rinse. It would be illogical to drag the hose out just for the wheels. If you have the hose out however, Spray and Rinse couldn’t be simpler, the name becomes the instructions. Without a hose it’s more Spray and Use What’s Left In Your No Rinse Bucket To Sponge Them Down. Not ideal but the results are good for the time commitment. Available from: www.exoticdetail.co.uk
Price: £13.95
Orange Peel: A Fashion Statement? The Limited Edition, hand crafted, Italian stallion that is the Ferrari 599 GTO. I’m sure you’ll agree it’s quite the work of art. You may even aspire to own one? You may already own one? But has your gaze drifted over that paintwork? If you read WAXED Issue 1 you will be fully aware of our trip to the Gumball 3000 start. While walking round the parade of uber metal, it became clear that there is an orange peel pandemic. The amount of highly expensive, super rare and exotic cars that appeared to suffer from this problem was incredible. In severe cases orange peel could be seen beneath vinyl wrap! Now Orange Peel has been around for some time, so I’m not suggesting it’s a new concept, but since when has it been accepted practice for the likes of Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini to ship cars with what is commonly known as a paint ‘defect’.
The causes are relatively straight forward, ranging from quickly evaporating thinners, incorrect gun set up and even applying excessive paint. In truth the real cause (more often than not) is mass production. Share holder profits, meeting higher consumer demands all have an effect on many areas of build quality. The strange thing is the manufacturers are prepared to do very little about it, which has lead to the strangest of fashion trends. If you are not aware of Dirk A Photography, you may not have seen THIS picture. One of the more horrifying cases I’m sure you’ll agree. Now you may scream, shout and send as many letters of complaint as humanly possible, but I doubt anything will be done about it. This leaves 2 choices, a fork in the road for our future. Do we remain angry and scorn disgrace at this mindless ignorance, or do we accept it, embrace it and claim it as our own. Resistance is futile and serves only to waste our time, so put the wet sanding block down and join the strangest of fashion statements.
Many thanks to Dirk A Photography

Protection
The Pyrenees, in late July, with midday temperatures reaching close to 40 degrees, who in their right mind would consider this a vacation form the 9 to 5? Fortunately I am aware of such a soul. Rich is a close friend, and Land Rover devotee who likes nothing better than to forage, burrow and rustle around Britain’s Green Lanes. Earlier this year he showed me a proposed route for an off-roading adventure spanning France, Andorra and Spain, immediately offering me the opportunity to ride shotgun. Unfortunately taking 14days out from the business during our busiest period wasn’t viable, a decision I was more than happy with once I heard about the relentless heat. With the trip planned however, we discussed the possibility of embarking on a wax test for the magazine. I’m going to let the pictures do most of the talking on this one, but there is some background information that may be useful. Firstly the paint was machined, two stages followed by a precleanse wipe down. The wax of choice was Blackfire Midnight Sun, a reasonably priced wax with just as reasonable levels of protection. Unsure of exactly what we’ll learn from this, Rich and an unsuspecting co-driver were sent off to discover the undiscovered.
It’s fair to say the paintwork took some abuse during the 14 day trip. The mix of sea water, dust, sand and the odd Spanish bush made sure the wax suffered. Despite the torture, not a word was spoken. We know two layers of Midnight Sun will happily protect for around 12 months in normal conditions, so frankly 14 dusty days wasn’t enough to draw up any meaningful conclusions. Not all lost though, we did manage to get some fantastic pictures!

What do you consider when buying a shampoo? Cleaning ability? Foaming Action? What about PPB? (Price Per Bucket). At around £7 a bottle, Maxi Suds looks like a nice cheap option compared to Shampoo Plus at around £15. However, when considering the PPB it is worthwhile investing in the bigger 1L/1Gallon shampoo’s than it is to buy on price alone. 54 Washes using Maxi Suds would cost £49.14 compared to Hyper Wash which would cost £6.48. Think about the products you could buy with £42.66!
