The night of Thursday, May 12, 2022 annual gala and banquet was a great night for those members of the Cherryville Chamber of Commerce who are not just members of our community at large but are businesses and citizens that provide so many great services and love to this great small town in the

northwestern corner of Gaston County. The annual Chamber of Commerce meeting took place last Thursday night at the Cherryville Golf and Country Club and was opened up with a welcome and acknowledgement of all who came that night by Chamber Board of Directors chairman Pete Craft. Mr. Craft recognized and thanked the Board, asking those members present to stand, congratulating them on all their hard work. Cherryville physician Dr. Thomas Rhyne White, already a well established

name in medicine in his hometown, has opened a new medical affiliate in his old office on Oak Street. Called HomeTownHealthy, the facility had a ribbon cutting event on Wednesday, May 11, with Dr. White, members of his family and many of his staff from his other medical offices in Cherryville and

Shelby, as well the Mayor and members of the City Council and the Chamber of Commerce. Also coming by were numerous well-wishers and friends who wanted to tour the inside of the new clinic to see what all is going to be offered. In a handout given out afterwards, it was noted some of the services to be of-

fered at HomeTownHealthy (HTH) are: preventive medicine; health assessments; nutrition/fitness; weight management; lipid disorders; men’s health; laboratory services; and second opinions. James Martin Scarborough GROVER, NC – James Martin Scarborough, 79, died Sunday, May 15, 2022 at his home. Born in Wilmington, NC, he was the son of the late James and Helen McCrae Scarborough. James was employed by Metrolina Sprinkler, Duke Energy and retired from Parker Hannifin. He was a member of Fairview Lodge #339, was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed golf. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchild dearly. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Zelma “Tinky” Scarborough of the home; daughters, Paige Biddix and husband Timothy and Brooke Bolin and husband Christopher; sons, Jason Scarborough and Jeremy Scarborough and wife Jennifer, all of Kings Mountain; sister, Jeanette Hoover and husband Knoxie of Charlotte; grandchildren, Jennifer Falls, Brandi Falls, Madison Ayscue, Josh Bolin, Spurgeon Scarborough, Hunter Scarborough, Cooper Scarborough, Colton Scarborough, Ember Scarborough and Joey Biddix; and great grandchild, Remi Biddix. In our attempts to get a mobile white board for our teen area, we ended up with a rather sizable magnetic white board that should have been mobile but was missing the necessary parts to make it so. After several failed attempts to contact the seller to return the item we were told it’s ours

to do with as we wish. After much discussion, we realized it would fit perfectly on a bit of blank wall in our children’s area. Some wonderful magnetic letters and numbers and voila! A fun and interactive early literacy activity area for our developing readers. We’ve already seen children working with it and even had a tutor make use of it. Even better? In 2017, Dr. Josh Carpenter joined the practice and is now at the Shelby facility. In 2021 Dr. Brianna Buchanan joined HTDC, rounding out – to date – the direct care primary care practice’s cadre of physicians whose stated goal is “…a focus on improving the health of motivated patients seeking cutting-edge, evidence-based solutions.” Chamber Board Chairman Pete Craft was on hand to welcome the staff and doctors of HTH to Cherryville, noting that, once again, another Cherryville ribbon cutting had

a good crowd of folks on hand to celebrate a new business starting up. Mayor H.L. Beam, III said, “How great it is to see this clinic open again and serving our citizens. White mentioned about how he and wife, Diana, came back to Cherryville in 1988 from Charlotte, starting a practice in this very same building, and working there until 2014 when he said he resigned. Shortly thereafter, after much questioning by friends and former patients who missed him and wondered when or even if he was going to get back into a personal practice, he said he opened his current practice in what is known as “the Pink Building” on Main Street, across the way from the Chamber of Commerce. “I believe I have found a better way to practice medicine, putting the patient first. And I hope HomeTownHealthy will be an extension of our practice on Main Street,” he said. I ran around with my buddies all over my old neighborhood; got into more than a few fights (what little boy with a big mouth doesn’t?); rode bikes and motorcycles as a kid (occasionally); rode a couple of horses on my great-uncles’ farms every now and then; went to the lakes near my home in Kentucky and swam (a lot!); played (or rather, played at…) some sports (was pretty bad, by the way); spent a good deal of time carting around more than one fairly heavy Les Paul guitar or two (not at the same time, of course!) while I ran around on stages in various and sundry concerts, festivals and such, as a Christian rock musician back in the old long-haired “Jesus freak” music days of the 70s; and, later, got married

and helped raise two pretty rambunctious kids who both loved to go arrowhead and fossil hunting and fishing whenever I could get free to take them; and generally put my short, then-not-so-fat-as-I-amnow body through more than its share of paces. Standard operating procedure for your average American male who still thinks he’s ten feet tall and bullet proof, right? Only that it’s not any more. I mean, that ship has sailed and as my

darling wife of 28-plus years loves to point out – “You’re no spring chicken any more, sweetie pie.” Uh huh. I get that; I do. But, what I don’t get is why now, of all times? I don’t feel old. I don’t feel like it’s time to pack it in and call it a day when it comes to slowing down and finding out what is wrong with the old “sackry-illiack”, as Grandpa Jones, on “Hee Haw”, used to call it. Truth to tell… I’m a little bit afraid of what I will find out is wrong

with the old “sackry-illiack”. If I do, I’m not sure it is going to be something I’m going to want to hear. Then again, who does love getting news about the state of their health from their doctor? No one I know. The chances of good news/bad news are, as always, 50-50. Oh, well. I’ll circle back with all y’all later on this. In the meantime, I’ll keep praying. Naomi Judd, suicide and life’s appointment… We’ve all heard of people who have taken their lives by suicide. Glenn Mollette We typGuest Editorial ically wonder why? We wonder what was so bad about their lives that they could not cope another day? We were shocked by the sudden death of Naomi Judd. She was a country music star and legend. She and her daughter, Wynonna had racked up 14 number one hits. They had five Grammy awards and 20 million-plus album sales. A new tour was planned for this Fall and the day after her death an induction ceremony was scheduled for the Country Music Hall of Fame. She apparently had it all. She had a long-term 30year marriage, successful daughters and fame and fortune. What more could a human being want? Apparently, something was still wrong. Depression and mental illness apparently can become a hole so deep and so dark that once someone is in it, they don’t feel they are emotionally able to survive or escape the darkness. We have been shocked by other personalities who reportedly took their lives such as

comedian Robin Williams and celebrity food writer Anthony Bourdain who traveled the world tasting and showing various lifestyles and cuisines. Mental illness comes in various forms and affects people in different ways and on different levels. Everyone has down days, the blahs and feelings of unhappiness. The weather affects us. Rainy or snowy days may eventually get to us. Too many bills and not enough money to pay them can work on our minds. A sick or troubled family member may worry us or make us feel bad. Our own personal health battles can make us feel down. Too much to do is troubling. Terminal illness that is rapidly getting worse puts us in a state of desperation to escape the outcome sooner rather than later. There is more to depression than snapping our fingers to get out of it, as proven by Judd. She openly talked about her illness. She wrote a book about it and reportedly had spent years medically dealing with her diseases. Severe mental illness can end sadly end tragically. Reviewing her life, it seems there would be a counter argument for everything we are supposed to do. Get help. Take medication. Have a good doctor and a good counselor. Talk about

the disease. Find meaningful things to do. Have hobbies. Stay busy. Pursue life. Be involved in meaningful relationships, have faith in God, etc. Judd appeared to do all of this and more. Does this mean we have no hope if we have mental illness? We always have hope but we must be very aware of the seriousness of depression. Our mental state is serious and can be terminal. Keep in mind that people successfully deal with mental illness every day. It does not have to be the end. People seek counsel, medical help, faith in God and find coping solutions to dealing with depression and mental illness. Mental illness does not have to end badly. Try to think of those left behind. Try to think about the spouse, the children and the loved ones who are left to go on. I have known people who were so physically sick that I understood their pain and desire to escape their bodies. Try to keep in mind that God made us and we all have an appointment with death. We don’t have to push the appointment. It’s coming to us all. Try to find a way to find purpose and peace with the brief life God has given to you. It will end soon enough.

this area. At one point there was a weekly column in a local newspaper featuring gospel groups and where they would be on the weekend. I miss those days because I love good gospel music, and to me it is an excellent way to bring people together. It comes to my mind as I write these words that this event was a good glimpse into the future that better days are ahead where we can assemble with common likes and desires. But I also doubt seriously if we will ever return to the pre-COVID days where we felt completely safe in large groups of people we did not know. In saying this however I place my complete faith in God that His will may continue to be done on special nights in small towns or wherever He so desires.

You never have to wonder because there is pro-

tection in Him and His word. Jesus could press forward in life because He always kept His eyes on the Father and what eternity would bring after this life. Remember, scripture tells us in John 14:6, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” That’s the only way Jesus could have endured the cross. His focus was on the Father and His purpose was to fulfill the Father’s plans. The Lord knew that you and I would need a risen Savior. If Christ was willing

to do that for all, we too can press on by placing our eyes on Jesus instead of this world. During the trials that will most definitely come, shouldn’t we remain faithful in an all-powerful God? Think about it, God’s gift to each of us was His only Son and how we choose to live and serve Him is our gift to Him. What will YOU do with Jesus today? Each of us must choose how we finish life and then decide if it will it be well done in the sight of the Lord. In His service…

(2nd Part of “the Power of Praying in Agreement” series) Have you ever had a conversation with someone and it seemed everything they said was the opposite of what you believed? Did you end up in a heated discussion with that person or did you politely keep quiet and try to change the subject? Whatever you decided to do, you probably were glad that DANYALE PATTERSON the conversation was finally over. In the same way I wonder how God feels or what he thinks when he listens to us pray to him requests that are against his nature, in disagreement to his word and that is simply not his will. This could be why we haven’t gotten the answers we were hoping for. God earnestly as a loving Father wants to answer our prayers, but he’s looking for people to simply believe in Him and pray in alignment with his holy will found in the scriptures. He wants us to walk with him on this journey following him wholeheartedly. Amos 3:3 (NLT) “Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?” Bow Down When we decided to repent or make a 180 turn from our sins, ask for forgiveness and receive Jesus into our hearts, we were in essence saying “Lord I believe that you are God and I am not. I don’t know everything but you do. I submit my life to you. Have your way!” How much more powerful our prayers will become when we not only pray with others in faith and agreement, but pray to God in complete humility, and unity of his word and heart. I John 5:14-15 “This is the [remarkable degree of] confidence which we [as believers are entitled to] have before Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, [that is, consistent with His plan and purpose] He hears us. And if we know [for a fact, as indeed we do] that He hears and listens to us in whatever we ask, we [also] know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have [granted to us] the requests which we have asked from Him.” When is the last time you prayed, “Lord what is on your mind. What would you like me to do? It’s not about my desires, but yours. I want to please you.” I Peter 5:6 (NLT) “So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.” PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord, you are good and your mercy endures forever. Coach A.J. Henley’s CHS Lady Ironmen took two wins at their home field last week as they moved forward in their playoffs quest. Against Swain County First up in the CHS ladies’ quest was a solid 12-2 win in the first round of the playoffs against the visiting Swain County Lady Devils as they rapped a number of hits,

taking control of the game and ending the Lady Devils in five innings of play. The winning pitcher was Krista Davis, as she went the distance to take the battle to the Swain County team. Against North Stokes The Lady Vikings of North Stokes (#24-seed) traveled to Cherryville on Wednesday, May 11 to face the #8 seed Lady Ironmen in a second round, CHS home game playoffs matchup. Once again, right-hander Krista Davis was on the mound for Coach Henley’s ladies and as usual, she delivered, getting the win as she held the Lady Vikings to

a no-hitter, as the Lady Ironmen defeated them by a score of 7-0. Coach Henley said his best hitter of the game was first baseman Riley Bryant who went 3 for 3. But he added the ladies had five others who hit well for the team, getting a hit apiece. The CHS Lady Ironmen are scheduled to travel and play their third playoff game away against Norwood’s South Stanley Lady Bulls, a team that is 24-3 overall. (Additional information by Coach A.J. The CHS Ironmen rolled on to a third round appearance in the NCHSAA playoffs as they defeated, in Round One, the Piedmont Charter Patriots by a score 10-0 at Fraley Field last Tuesday night, May 10.

They then faced the Mountain Island Charter Raptors on Thursday night, May 12, also at Fraley Field, for a Round Two bout, ending that club’s run by a score of 4-1. team and proceeded to leave him in the dust. What I’ll remember the most about Jackson is what propelled him to victory that day, his soft-spoken confidence and a competitive drive like no other. As a coach you don’t get too many opportunities to work with a young man like Jackson. If he was in the race, we always had a chance.

You can put the weight of the world on his shoulders and he would deliver time and time again. His contributions to the CHS Track and Field program will long be remembered. The best is yet to come for Jackson. I know he will perform well in the next few weeks at regionals and states and go on to have a successful collegiate track

and field career.” And lastly, but not least, CHS AD Coach Scott Harrill had this to say about the quiet youngster moving on in his track career. “I am really proud of Jackson. He represents Cherryville in a fantastic way both athletically and academically. Jackson has willed the Ironmen track team to many

victories this year and we look forward to watching him at L-R. Jackson is one of the top track athletes to come through Cherryville. HONOR From Page 1 Teacher of the Year, and Kristin Kiser of Lowell Elementary School earned the Gaston County Principal of the Year recognition. They will represent Gaston County Schools in the regional competitions for 2022-2023. Additionally, Aimee Tolleson of South Point High School received the Assistant Principal of the Year distinction, and Angela Calamia, director of school nutrition, was named the Central Office Administrator of the Year. As sponsor of the recognition ceremony, Truist presented to the Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year a handcrafted Truist Educator Apple and $1,250 to use for professional advancement. Each Principal of the Year and Teacher of the Year finalist received $250 to use for professional advancement. The Evening of Excellence ceremony coincided with the celebration of National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2-6) in Gaston County Schools. The program paid tribute to the school system’s most outstanding teachers, administrators, and certified support staff for their exceptional leadership and many contributions. The award nominees, finalists, and recipients are considered to be among the top public-school employees in the state. Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker said, “The Evening of Excellence program gives us an opportunity to bring attention to the exemplary efforts of our teachers, administrators, and others, who go above and beyond expectations to inspire success and a lifetime of learning. We congratulate the award recipients and applaud all educators in Gaston County Schools for what they do every day to support children and encourage them to learn, achieve, and thrive.” Dr. Booker added, “We would like to thank Truist for sponsoring this important employee recognition

Below is biography information for each award recipient: ■ Gaston County Teacher of the Year – The 2022-2023 Gaston County Teacher of the Year is Steven Loudon from W.C. Friday Middle School. The award is presented by Truist. Loudon teaches seventh grade math at W.C. Friday and has 15 years of experience in education. A graduate of Emmaus Bible College with a bachelor’s degree in Biblical studies and youth ministry, he earned master’s degrees in elementary education and school administration from UNC-Charlotte. Loudon previously taught fifth grade at Pinewood Elementary for seven years and served as an assistant principal at Woodhill Elementary as well as a middle school math curriculum facilitator. ■ Gaston County Principal of the Year – The 2022-2023 Gaston County Principal of the Year is ¬¬¬Kristin Kiser from Lowell Elementary School. Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, Kiser earned a master’s degree in remediation/elementary education from Francis Marion University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Winthrop University. She began her teaching career in Waynesville, N.C. and taught in South Carolina before coming to Gaston County in 2002. She previously served as principal at Bessemer City Primary, Pinewood Elementary, and Rankin Elementary. ■ Assistant Principal of the Year – The 2022-2023 Gaston County Schools Assistant Principal of the Year is Aimee Tolleson from South Point High School. Tolleson joined Gaston County Schools in 2018. She started her career in education as an English teacher in Columbia, S.C. and later taught for the Granbury Independent School District in Texas where she also served as a reading and math intervention instructional specialist and dean of instruction. Tolleson earned a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education from the University of South Carolina and obtained a master’s degree in educational administration from Tarleton State University. ■ Central Office Administrator of the Year – The 20222023 Gaston County Schools Central Office Administrator of the Year is Angela Calamia, director of school nutrition. Calamia joined Gaston County Schools in 2018 after serving as a nutritionist and director of school nutrition operations for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She holds an associate degree in food processing technology and a bachelor’s degree in clinical and general management dietetics from the State University of New York as well as a master’s degree in clinical dietetics from the New York Institute of Technology. Prior to moving to North Carolina, she worked as the director of nutritional services at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in New York.

Against Mountain Island In this Thursday, May 12 matchup, the CHS squad defeated a tough Raptor ball club by a score of 4-1 at Fraley Field as they moved on to take the second round of NCHSAA SPC 1A/2A play. Kanon Willis got the win in this one who helped himself later on going 1-3, and getting an RBI.

Leading off for the Ironmen once again was junior slugger Landon Hahn, who was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Will Heavner was 2-3; and Colin Huss (1-2). The Ironmen scattered seven hits, getting four runs to own the night. The Ironmen are slated to play the East Wilkes Cardinals at Fraley Field on Tuesday, May 17, and if they win that game, they are slated to play Friday, May 20, again at Fraley Field against either the winner of East Randolph and Uwharrie Charter.
