Carson Hawkins is the Home Run King of Stanley By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
When Carson Hawkins, 12, takes to the baseball diamond at Harper Park in Stanley he smiles, his Crawdad teammates smile, his coach smiles, his parents smile, heck, everybody there smiles. The reason for all the good will is the fact that even though Carson has physical challenges in the form of
quadriplegic cerebral palsy, his passionate love of baseball and the desire to be the best he can be at it is an inspiration to all. Carson is known far and wide for his home run hitting. According to Stanley Parks and Rec. director Tug Deason, Carson has about 40 homers to his credit. Carson grins broadly when his homer skills are mentioned. “I want to keep playing
ball as long as I can so I can keep hitting them,” he said. Carson is a seasoned player. He started with Dallas Parks and Rec. then came to Stanley last season. He is a left fielder for the Dixie Youth Crawdads. Carson’s coach, David Stone had this to say. “He is a blessing to all of us,” Stone said. “His smile lights up the whole place. BANNER-NEWS OBITUARIES Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him Intentionality
Anne Johnson Lineberger Beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, friend and consummate shell seeker, Anne Johnson Lineberger, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her friends and family on Friday, May 13, 2022. Anne was born December 4, 1945 to James Allison Johnson, Jr. and Julia Norton Johnson of Avon Park, Florida. She and her older sister, Leila Johnson Adams, spent 76 special years together, enjoying sister trips, sharing as many holidays as they could, speaking every day by telephone and making lifelong memories. She graduated from Avon Park High School and with the encouragement of her mother, left Florida to attend Queens College in Charlotte, NC. Anne made the most of her time at Queens enjoying her sisters in the Chi Omega sorority and having fun at Carolina summer school. From her dorm room window at Queens, she spotted a red-headed man walking across the campus. She turned to her good friend Lanie declaring she was going to marry that man. In June of 1967, right after graduation, she did just that marrying the love of her life, Arch. In 1970 they moved to Belmont, NC settling into the “Happy Box,” Arch’s family home. They lived there together for 52 years raising their three children, Abel, Maury, and Sara and spent many summers at one of her favorite places, Gause Landing. The memories she made with her family and friends will be cherished forever. She touched the lives of most everyone she met. Whether you shared just a moment, a casual interaction, or were blessed to be her friend for much longer, Anne left a lasting impression. She gathered each new experience and person to her heart and felt grateful for the gift. Anne was blessed with fun, mischievous, and supportive friends; the best of which spanned many decades. She loved learning with friends in her Antique Study Group, exploring the history of beloved pieces and sharing her love of finding treasures. Anne loved working in her yard and spending time with her Garden Club. Her yard at the Happy Box has always been beautiful and admired by those who pass through the gate or walk by. Anne had so many gifts. She was an accomplished watercolorist, prolific knitter, avid collector, and wonderful cook. She shared her talents with her chil-
dren and beloved grandchildren — always encouraging crafts and creative pursuits. She was affectionately known as Bear by her grandchildren, shortened from Pooh Bear, a nickname she loved and received in college. She had the gift of excellent navigation often giving directions by where to stop for a quick bite or to find a fun treasure. She preferred back roads to highways and given the option always took a more interesting route. Anne believed that the journey was always more interesting than the destination. Perhaps, Anne’s greatest gift was her ability to find joy in the simplest things. Anne’s varied interests led to some creative occupations. First, was Perennials to Parsley, her flower and catering business with her dear friend of 50 years, Kathy DuBose. Next, came Sea Dreams, her jewelry business. She loved making pieces for friends and family and selling at craft shows in the area. In 1995, Anne started working with Creative Memories, a home scrapbooking business that ultimately shaped the next 25 years of her life. Always an early adapter, she switched to digital scrapbooking in 2006. In 2010, she and twelve friends formed pixels2Pages to teach thousands of women worldwide to preserve their family photos, stories, recipes, letters and precious memories. Through her kind and personal attention, many learned to love Pixie Anne dearly. Anne will be missed by those she leaves behind. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Archibald Caleb Lineberger, III of Belmont, NC; son, Abel Caleb Lineberger, II of Asheville, NC; daughter, Maury Lineberger Finger and son-in-law, Wade Joyner Finger,III with their children Dagny Elizabeth, Anne Carter, and Wade William Finger of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Sara Lineberger Weiers and sonin-law, Ryan William Weiers with their children Asher Caleb and Julia Maren of Charlotte, NC; two nieces, Julie Adams Rand and Ruthie Adams Pickett of Daytona Beach, FL; and three great-nieces, Caroline Rand Dalton (Teddy) of Roanoke, VA, Leila Pickett Combs (Wally) of Ormond Beach, FL and Carly Crafts Pickett of Ormond Beach, FL. Anne also cherished her role as godmother to Dana Hampton DuBose and Clayton Sayre Lineberger, Jr. The memorial service will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Comforter, 216 N. Main Street, Belmont, NC. With Pastors Micah Kearney and John Probst officiating. A private burial will follow. Donations in Anne’s memory can be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation at garysinisefoundation.org honoring her uncle, Harry Norton, who died bravely in service to our country in WWII. Funeral arrangements entrusted to McLean Funeral Directors at www. McLeanFuneral.com.
By Dennis Siracusa We make many decisions intentionally. A walk through a grocery store sorts through mental images of our pantry, refrigerator, or a list in our hand and we make lots of selections; some quick; some more thoughtful. This happens often each day from determining when we’ll drag ourselves out of bed to what we’ll wear, eat, or….well you get it. But there is a higher level of intentionality that should concern all of us because it is running amuck. Let’s look at the word intentional as it is used in our dictionary and then the bible in both Greek and Hebrew. Our Webster’s dictionary defines intentional as “deliberate.” Our Greek and Hebrew lexicons define it as “the act of thinking, consideration and meditation for good or evil.” Both are similar but the lexicons take us deeper.
Accident or purpose; evolution or infinite God Creation Design; which is it? A philosophical war is raging all around us; vying for our attention and support on topics we never imagined possible but it boils down to a very simple point; did God design all we see and set it in motion, as He instructs from scripture, or not? Throughout scripture God reveals some very startling facts. “I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.” Isa. 45:5 NIV “I form the light and create the darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord do all these things.” Isa.45:7 “Yes I am from ancient of days I am He. No one can deliver from my hand. When I act, who can reverse it.” Isa.43:13. So do we embrace God or discard Him because our answer makes all the difference. God established authority

showed me how much passion he has for baseball.” Deason says Carson is a favorite of his as well. “We are so glad, excited, and proud to have him take part,” he said. Carson’s dad Adam is rightly proud of his son. “As long as he wants to play baseball we will let him,” he said. Mother Erin says seeing him on the field is a joy. “Being on the team is great
because it gives him the opportunity to be around other kids,” she said. Carson is carrying on the Hawkins family athletic tradition. He has two older brothers, Riley who plays baseball for East Gaston High, and Zack who plays tennis there. Riley gives Carson a bit of a
hand on the baseball field at the plate and in left field. “I love seeing him out there playing with the other kids,” said Riley. Carson is looking forward to growing in his athletic abilities. “His goal is to run the bases on foot,” his mom said.
Meanwhile, Carson is looking to rack up even more homers. He says he knows about legend Babe Ruth and his 60-home run season and when asked if he thought he could top it, here’s what he said with his characteristic enthusiasm and energy. “Yes, I can!”

Gaston College baseball team closes a season filled with highlights Gaston College story/photos Gaston College’s baseball program closed its inaugural season with another win, capping off a season of success. The College’s final record for their first season was an impressive 41-9 overall. The Rhinos previously clinched the Region 10 West championship at home on April 20 after a doubleheader win against Cleveland Community College. That same day they also became the first baseball program in Region 10’s 73-year history to win 30 league games in a season. In recognition of the championship season, the College unveiled the team’s first championship banner prior to the start of Tuesday’s game at Sims Legion Park. The team started their season playing at CaroMont Health Park while renovations of Sims Legion Park, including the installation of a new turf field, were being completed. The first game played at their new home field was just over a month ago on March 26. The team’s success was recognized early on this year when they were included in the week two NJCAA poll rankings. They entered the poll ranking No. 10, but ad-
vanced up to No. 3, a position they held for three weeks, before dropping to No. 9 this past week. They also held rankings as high as No. 2 in two other national junior college polls during the season. “I told the guys, 41-9 is special,” said head coach Shohn Doty. “I’ve never been around anything like that. They set the standard for every team that’s going to come through here. To finish in the top 10 of the nation in our first year speaks for itself.” The College also recognized ten sophomore players at their game on Sunday, May 1. First baseman Ahmir Cournier, third baseman Chandler Riley, catcher Patrick Hogan, infielder Logan Rose and pitchers Christian Baker, Alex Hall, Gus Hughes, Marlowe Iorio, Hayden Myrick and Zach Zedalis were all honored before the game. Six of the 10 players have signed to play college baseball next season at Division I or II schools. “I’m really proud of the sophomores and all that they’ve achieved. We’ve played a great schedule and these 10 guys helped make it all happen,” said Doty.
Gaston’s baseball team poses with the championship banner. See more photos on page 7.

Warriors, Red Raiders, and Storm fall in second round By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
When the high school baseball and softball playoff brackets were announced last Monday, anything was possible. Cramer softball and East Gaston baseball drew first round home games, while South Point baseball and East Gaston softball had to go on the road. In the first round three of the four local teams did well. However, in the second round the bottom fell out and everyone’s season ended. Here is a breakdown of how first and second round action went. East Gaston Softball The Lady Warriors earned the 27th seed in the 2A West. EG went on the road to face a tough Bandy’s program that was seeded 6th. Bandy’s rode into the playoffs with a 21-4 record. East Gaston gave it a shot, but the Lady Trojans were just too good. EG fell 16-0. The Lady Warriors had a decent run ending the season with a 12-13 record. South Point Baseball In the first round the 17th seeded Red Raiders drove to Mount Ulla to battle the 16th seeded West Rowan Falcons. In the first inning the Falcons were looking good, but a double play with bases loaded forced West Rowan to the dugout with only one run on the score board. After that South Point pitcher Jake Beaty shut West Rowan down restricting the Falcons to only one more hit for the rest of the game. For their part, the Red Raiders only had four hits, but they made the most of them scoring runs in third, fifth, and seventh innings to walk away with a 4-1 win. In the second round South Point headed back to Rowan
County this time to battle the 3A West’s top seeded team, the South Rowan Raiders. The Red Raiders played hard, but the 24-4 South Rowan team had more fire power. The South Rowan Raiders won 6-1. South Point ended the 2022 season with a respectable 15-8 record. Stuart Cramer Softball Stuart Cramer Storm went into the playoffs as the 11th seeded team in the 3A West. In the first round Cramer hosted Saint Stephens who was seeded in the 22nd spot. Emma Donaldson went to the mound for Cramer and didn’t disappoint. In seven innings of action the junior right hander only gave up four hits. In the end strong pitching and solid fielding kept the Lady Indians in check and Cramer walked away with a big 6-0 win. Offensively, the Cramer bats got the job done. In all Storm batters recorded eight hits led by Hadley Womack and Andrea Detweiler. Womack and Detweiler both had two hits apiece. Womack also added a homer to her tally sheet. Also making a playoff splash was Addison Stewart. Stewart only had one hit, but she really made it count by driving in three RBIs. After beating St. Stephens, the Storm had to regroup and then two days later they loaded up the bus for a long trip to Rockingham County to take on the 6th seeded Lady Cougars. In that game things just didn’t work out for the Storm as Cramer fell to Rockingham County 6-0. Cramer ended the year with an impressive 20-4 record, the best in school history. This year’s squad has a
lot to be proud of. Cramer got it done this year by playing heads up softball and stressing teamwork. “I think a lot of it comes down to attitude and wanting to fight for each other,” head coach James Brown explained. “We didn’t have a statistical all-star, we didn’t rely on one or two players. Everyone contributed.” East Gaston Baseball East Gaston went into the playoffs with the 16th seed in the 2AWest. In the first round the Warriors hosted Pine Lake Prep. This game proved to be a slugfest with the score tied up 8-8 at the end of the seventh inning. In the eighth inning both teams clobbered each other, but EG came out on top with a well-earned 12-11 win. To get the win the Warriors belted out 12 hits. The East Gaston offense was led by Parker Agosta who went 3-for-5. In the second round East Gaston took the show on the road to face the top seeded Randleman Tigers. This game wasn’t the Warriors best performance. Randleman dominated and advanced to the third round beating EG 11-0. While any playoff loss is tough to handle the Warriors have a lot to be proud of this year. This year’s squad played some solid ball. “We finished second in the conference with a 10-2 record,” head coach Randy Sellers said. “We won the Gaston County Spring Break Tournament and set a single season school record for wins with 20. I’m extremely pleased and proud of the performance from the 2022 East Gaston baseball program.” The Warriors finished 2022 with a solid 20-7 record.
