Mt. Holly police getting ready for Labor Day weekend on the lake
MHPD Sgt. W.A. Monroe and Capt. D.W. Sisk take the department’s boat out for a Mt. Island Lake patrol.
So, what exactly does it get used for?“There are several locations on the lakeshore where people gather to swim and party and we visit them,” said MHPS chief Brian Reagan. “Also, if someone on the shore or in the woods near the shore were to be injured, it might take officers on foot an hour to get there. The boat can be there in a fraction of that time.” In the sad case of a drowning, the boat’s electronics come in handy locating a victim. The electronics can also detect evidence such as a weapon thrown in the Thankfully, water.noone has drowned on Mt. By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info Labor Day weekend is here, and the Mt. Holly Police Dept. will be busy keeping boaters and barbecuers on Mt. Island Lake safe. Last week saw MHPD Capt. D.W. Sisk and Sgt. W.A. Monroe take the department’s boat out for a lake shore patrol. The craft has a johnboat style hull, is 21-feet long, eight feet wide, and powered by a 150 horsepower Mercury motor that can send it skimming along at up to 50 miles per hour. It also features a center console, lights, siren, and safety equipment. The boat has Lowrance electronics including a depth finder and sophisticated 3D side-scan and down-scan sonar. The boat didn’t cost the taxpayers of Mt. Holly a penny. It was purchased with a $35,000 grant from the NC crime commission. Six MHPD officers have been trained in its use.

have learnHim,withshiplation-re-to value and love the Lord and let Him reshape our sin laden hearts. When we see the damage sin has done throughout our lives and to others and we compare the creeping vileness of sin to God’s Holiness, we learn to prefer the likeness of our Father and figuratively climb on His potter’s wheel to be remade. Isaiah 64:8 NIV, “Yet you Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” And the main way we allow Him to reshape us is by soaking in the Son of God’s life sustaining light. In John 14:6, Jesus reminds us “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” As with our butterfly soaking up sunlight, we gain our power, beauty, purpose and authenticity by preferring to soak in the Son’s light over randomly wandering around in meaningless or dangerous darkness.

I had hoped for the rapture (no such luck) or that the floor would collapse under me and I’d go to the basement (didn’t happen either). I don’t remember my response. I do remember mumbling something. I knew at that very moment that I had lost my credibility with them. How would they ever respect what I said? Would they believe anything I’d share? How could I witness to them about Jesus? I had no credibility. I never darkened that auto parts store again. I couldn’t face them. I didn’t want to know what they thought of me. It can be said that our reputation is all we have. I want to believe that I am a person of my word. I was not. By Tony Marciano I was a commuter student in college. My first three semesters, I took two buses to get there. In my fourth semester, I purchased a ten-year-old car. I thought I was getting a dependable one as the previous owner was a mechanic. It was really a piece of junk. I learned how to replace brakes, clutches, transmissions, and motors in that car. I spent half my life repairing it and the other half studying for college. The alternative was to take two buses to school. Although the auto parts store was fairly close to my house, my uncle, who worked at Acme Tool, told me about an auto parts store that gave discounts to employees of Acme Tool. I started going there. I told them I worked at Acme Tool. That was a lie. I didn’t even know where my uncle worked. For the first six months, I reminded them I worked at Acme Tool. They were kind and gave me discounts. I bought a lot of parts. There came a point where we were becoming friends and I no longer had to remind them where I Thenworked.camethe day I needed a summer job. I walked into the auto parts store and placed my order for parts. Since these were my friends, I casually looked at them and said, “Do you know anyone who

A couple of weeks ago I decided to begin eating things that (allegedly) are healthier. I started out by consuming a big bowl of raw kale salad since I had read in one of the women’s magazines that are stacked up in the restroom that kale was the ticket to immortality but as it turned out the only ticket I got from the stuff was a piercing pain in my lower abdomen that lasted for several days. This situation led me back on the gustatory pathway to something I know and love- the hotdog and its bareback basis the weenie. Hotdogs are popular no matter how you pronounce it..hot dog, hot dawg, haute dawg, hot dahg…. I read an estimate that declared Americans consume 20 billion hotdogs each year- that’s about 70 hotdogs per person. I reckon that hotdog eating world champ Joey Chestnut who recently who wolfed down 63 hotdogs in ten minutes and while he was at it put an ole timey arse whupping on a person who stormed the eating area took up the slack of kale eaters/vegans. A hotdog is like a blank canvas. You can paint anything you want on it. It can be minimalist with just a squirt of mustard or Rococo which is “all the way” and then some. In a blasphemous quirk, I read that some folks of northern extraction put sliced tomato and something called sport peppers on theirs. Yuck.Along time ago when I was a reporter at the Kings Mtn. Herald, the editor Gary Dean Stewart came up with the idea of a “see-rees” on who had the best hotdog in that neck of the “Alan, woods.the news is slow this week so let’s do a see-rees on hotdogs and I need ye to go out yonder and eat a hotdog at a different place every day for about 10 days and then write a sto-ree about it.” So, I did as I was instructed and by the time I was through I never wanted to see another hotdog for a long while. The worst one I ate had a deep fat fried weenie that looked like it had been petrified or mummified or turned into an oversize Slim Jim sausage thing. When the story came out a woman called and scolded me for using bad language in the paper. Gary told me we could not use the word “weenie” in print ever again. So, where does the word weenie come from anyway? When Sharon and I were in Vienna, Austria, back in June, I got a clue as those folks spell their town name- Wein. So, weenie is shortened from the German phrase Wiener Wurst, which roughly translates to “Vienna sausage”. Wiener literally means “of Vienna” and is pronounced like “vee-nuh” in German. Now you know. As folks do in everything from cars to clothes to music etc., each person has their own taste in hotdogs and their favorite places to get one even if that place is home. My favorite spot is in Gastonia. This place sells ice cream too. This place has been around about 100 years despite recent efforts by radicals to disrupt its operation. Can you guess what place I am talking about? Hotdog weenies are versatile. Besides putting them in a bun there are other ways to fix them. In lean times (to which I am not a stranger) you can split weenies longways and fry them. Actually, they taste pretty good that way. Another dish is to chop them up and pitch the chunks in a pot of beans. Paying homage to their versatility, some folks call them tube steak. Well, that’s enough wandering through the wonderful world of weenies. A journey of the jowls well worth exploring.

Alan Oh no he’s writing about food again
Do you ever struggle over what to eat; especially for breakfast? I do. While camping in the mountains for years I preferred to eat hearty meals. Fish, jerky, venison stew baked over hot coals or foods I’d carried with me; you name it as long as it was filling and sustaining. This morning I preferred something original. I paired eggs with beef taco meat and a medley of vegetables drizzled with hot sauce. Staring out my window I wondered what the beautiful “Red Spotted Purple butterfly” settled on our deck with wings spread in the sunlight, preferred to Butterflieseat.are fascinating and while they don’t live long, they have a story and purpose. It turns out this butterfly prefers to build its energy with over ripe fruit so why was it here; maybe the wild blackberries. After some research, it turns out they also love bright sunlight and manage quite well with regular infusions of energy from the sun. What infuses us? At the moment a cello score called “Despacito” is playing; it’s swellin g and ener g etic but here’s a caution, the lyrics, if we check into them, are humanist and dangerous so I’m careful not to soak in the lyrics. Generally, I love cello music but my dilemma is that, like this score, the music doesn’t totally express “me.” Oh sometimes cello covers express some of my feelings but because I’m not managing the instrument, nor can I, my authentic song or feelings are missing. Does that make sense? We all have a deep yearning for authenticity but putting our finger on it can be challenging because, after all, who has the answers? Does the media, do A-listers, talk shows, Hollywood, political leaders, sociologists; who exactly? If we consider we evolved from a slime pit billions of years ago we may well wander around in darkness asking, why am I here; for what purpose; I sure sense there is Fortunatelyone! there is one trustworthy source; our creator, Father God and His holy Word. Our Triune God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) created us in His image to Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly.

“The Fed needs a new mandate to fight financial crises ... The supply chain has to get corrected. That’s the fundamental cause of the problem.”--Dr.William (Bill) Van Lear Belmont Abbey College Economics Professor Emeritus Dr. William (Bill) Van Lear taught a course in economics in less than 30 minutes at a recent meeting of the Belmont Rotary Club. Among the topics he discussed were: The Federal Reserve System (Fed), Inflation and globalization, Consumer demand and the supply chain, Pandemic impacts on the workforce, Housing and energy markets. Dr. Van Lear said the Fed (our central bank) should be reformed, because with raising interest rates as its only weapon, it can’t fight inflation without damaging the economy. “The Fed needs a new mandate to fight financial crises,” he said. Before the pandemic, globalization increased the number of consumers and goods and helped create disinflation, he said. But the pandemic disrupted the supply chain, reducing the number of suppliers, resulting in the high inflation rates we’ve recently experienced. A nationwide shutdown and a global pandemic didn’t stop Gaston College from achieving major accomplishments during Dr. John Hauser’s first two years as college president.Dr.Hauser, who was appointed president on June 1, 2020, recounted some of the achievements during a presentation to the Belmont Rotary Club recently. They include: Cementing a historymaking partnership between a community college (Gaston College) and a major university (N.C. State). Partnering with CaroMont Health on a guaranteed employment program that greatly increased the number of Gaston College nursing graduates who stay here and work at CaroMont. More than tripling in one year the number of students studying cyber security and defense. Announcing plans to build a 41,000-square-foot Fiber Innovation Center on the Kimbrell Campus in Belmont that will increase the number of national and international companies using the Textile Technology Center for research, leading to new breakthroughs in fiber development. Launching the college’s first athletic program with teams (branded as the Rhinos) in baseball, softball, basketball, cross country and women’s beach volleyball. The baseball team was undefeated (15 & 0) in its first month of play, was ranked number two in the country and finished its first season as number one in the region. In the process, the college renovated the old Sims Legion Park in Gastonia to serve as its home field. Winning three national awards for branding, marketing and rebranding.

In Genesis 29, we find Leah, Rachel’s older sister, being rejected by Jacob. The Bible says she was unloved, yet God opened her womb. While Rachel was unable to have a child, Leah received this blessing, and she eventually gave birth to a son named Judah. In Matthew 1, we see the genealogy of Jesus, and guess who is on that list? Judah, Leah’s youngest son! Another blessing eventually came from someone who was once rejected! When we find ourselves facing this giant called rejection, it’s important that we remember we have our Lord and Saviour Jesus, which knows and understands the pain of rejection. We must learn to refuse the lie rejection tells us and replace it with the truth of who we are in Christ!
By Rev. Mark Costner Centerview Baptist Church, North Belmont Genesis 29:31 When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he opened her womb; Rejection is one of those things we’ve all experienced at some point in our lives. It has the ability to trick us into believing that our identity is based upon the acceptance or rejection of others. It’s a tactic the devil often uses.We all face some sort of rejection throughout our lives, from not being picked to play on a team as a kid, to not getting the job or the promotion we hoped for as an adult. But God always works things out for the best because He knows what’s ahead in our lives.

Many times, we find ourselves praying like this early church. God had answered their prayers, yet they didn’t believe it. Sometimes our prayers can be full of doubts, self-seeking, and with our own expectations instead of God’s. Prayer is powerful, and it can consist of many things. Prayer is worship. We are speaking to the Creator of the universe, worthy of our praise. Prayer is for intercession. Just as the early church prayed for Peter, we lift each other up in prayer many times. We can also pray for ourselves. We can pray for guidance, wisdom, and our daily needs. Prayer is also confession. As we pray, we open our hearts to God, confessing our sins and seeking His forgiveness. As we pray, we are having a conversation, not just with anyone, but with God Himself. What a privilege it is to speak to God, and Him hear us. He loves us so much that He allows us to approach Him in prayer. It can be easy to enter our prayer life with our desires, and motives. It can also be disappointing when God doesn’t answer in our way and time. However, prayer is an amazing gift from God. May we always set aside daily time to seek God in prayer, and may our prayers draw us closer to God in true worship as we fellowship with the Father.

Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org Followers of Jesus pray. That is something we all share. Prayer is an important part of our faith journey. Just as we pray, we would also agree that there is great power in prayer. We know our prayers can accomplish so much as God works and moves through us. However, praying can be challenging sometimes. There are times when we are frustrated, confused, and uncertain as we pray, waiting for God to act, or answer us. In Acts 12:1-17, Peter had been arrested by the king. He would soon face execution and found himself chained in the jail. Meanwhile, the church prayed earnestly for him and his release. As Peter slept in the jail, an angel appeared, commanding him to get up and put on his sandals. His chains fell off, and Peter and the angel walked out of the jail. Peter realized God had freed him. He then went to the house where many in the church had gathered to pray. As he knocked on the door, Rhoda the servant, told them he was there. They couldn’t believe it. They mocked her, even thinking Peter was a ghost. Finally, Peter came where they were, and they were amazed!

Some weekends we have had to turn people away by 11am due to the number of people showing up.” According to Sisk, illegal parking is a big issue at the access area. “People park their cars in the boat trailer area instead of the gravel lot they are supposed to use,” he said. “They also park and block other vehicles.”

From Page 1 The memorial was originally dedicated on August 27, 1922, to those who served in the “Great War”, sometimes called the “War to end all Wars”.The memorial originally cost $1,000 to construct. It’s a granite obelisk standing 25 feet tall on a multi-tiered base. Inscriptions appear on two sides of the largest, upper base block. The memorial is encircled by 14 granite posts, six feet apart and connected by a bronze chain. The bodies of four Belmont men who died in the war were moved to site of the memorial and were honored at the original dedication. Four small grave markers with the initials of the dead are set on each side of the obelisk. Although the inscription is dated August 15, 1922, the dedication ceremony was held on August 27. Rivalry games are always special, and the rivalry between South Point and East Gaston goes back for decades. Yet you would have to go back to 2008 to find the last time the Warriors beat the Red Raiders on the gridiron. When the gates opened there was a buzz in the air as a big crowd filed into Lineberger Stadium for South Point’s Black Friday/Senior Night. Many on the East Gaston side of the stadium were cautiously optimistic. There was hope that with the progress the Warriors had made in the last few years this might be the game where the streak ended. There were other reasons for Warrior fans to feel good about this one. See FOOTBALL, Page 11
Stuart Cramer at Bessemer City Starting the season off on the right track is what every team strives for at the beginning of the year. Ward ended the night with an impressive eight catches, 132 yards and three scores.Another player who had a good night was sophomore running back Mark O’Dell. The 5’11” 190 pound back ran hard. He also showed that he has no problem catching passes out of the backfield.
The Stuart Cramer Storm varsity football team went on the road last Friday and took on the Bessemer City High Yellowjackets. In the end the Storm poured down on the Yellowjackets 48-28. Gaston County, UNC Charlotte researchers partner on Groundwater Quality Project
Photos by Calvin Craig UNC Charlotte researchers, in collaboration with the Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services, announce the release of the Gaston Water Map, a website that maps known groundwater quality in the County, and provides resources as to best practices households can use to understand their well water quality. More than 4 in every 10 households in Gaston County currently use private well water as their primary source of drinking water. The groundwater resources that feed these wells are critically important for human health.Groundwater quality may be degraded by a range of contamination sources, including agricultural runoff, septic drain fields and coal ash ponds, as well as to naturally occurring trace elements such as arsenic. Based on findings from a recent, CDCfunded “Healthy Wells” study conducted by Gaston County DHHS and UNC Charlotte researchers, only a fraction of these households regularly test their drinking water, placing them at risk. Needed are tools that private well owners can use to inform themselves, as well as encouragement to conduct regular testing.Gaston Water Map provides an easy way to learn about groundwater quality through maps and rich visualization specific to contextualized information and analytics regarding groundwater quality from private wells.
In the last few days, more than 8,000 postcards announcing the service are being sent to residents that participated in the “Healthy Wells” study and encouraging them to locate their addresses on the interactive maps. The service is free, and all visits are anonymous, but there is an option for residents to subscribe to the Gaston Water Map and receive updates regarding groundwater quality and resources as they become available.
