Groundbreaking held for new Belmont Abbey residence halls By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
A large crowd of folks endured near 100F temperatures last Thursday at a groundbreaking ceremony for new residence halls at Belmont Abbey College. The groundbreaking took place at the site of the new hall directly across from the Abbey Yard baseball field. “This is an amazing thing,” said BAC president Dr. Bill Thierfelder. “Through the grace of God we found a way and the resources to male this a reality.” The $4.4 million, 136room residence hall represents the largest capital investment in the college’s history. The new hall will primarily serve upperclassmen but also add new classroom, office, and meeting space. MKC Architects designed the new building to mirror the Gothic architecture promi-
nent on the college’s campus. University Housing Solutions is the contractor building the new facility. The plans include additional parking for residents of the new hall. The as of yet unnamed new residence hall will be situated across from the softball field. The college has plans for a duplicate residence in the near future adjacent to the new dorm. In addition to these new accommodations, the college is also considering additional food service options for 2020 and beyond. The structure will be five stories, with the first story having meeting areas, social areas, offices, two classrooms, and a student lounge available to all students, including commuters. The upper floors will alternate between a men’s and women’s floor. Each residence floor will have a kitchenette, study areas, a laundry area, and a
Belmont city council approves $250,000 paving program The Belmont city council approved the 2019-2020 street resurfacing program that will resurface the 10 blocks of streets in Belmont that are in the worst condition. The city council approved this program during its August 5, 2016 meeting. The city staff awarded the contract to Blythe Construction, the low bigger on the project. The adopted FY 20192020 budget includes $250,000 for this paving program, and this is paid for using Powell Bill or gasoline tax revenue that the City receives from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. “Over the past several years the City of Belmont has used a data-driven process to determine which sections of city streets need resurfacing,” said Belmont Mayor Charlie Martin. “This process allows the City to spend its limited resources where they are
most needed. This fall resurfacing project achieves one of the city council’s longstanding goals of improving our infrastructure.” Belmont staff hired a consultant in 2013 and again in 2018 to rate the condition of every block of city streets within Belmont. The consultants used a series of criteria to rate each block, giving each block a rating from 0 to 100, with 0 being the worst and 100 being the best. This datadriven approach has allowed the city council to spend its limited street resurfacing funds where they are most needed. The initial goal of this program was to resurface all blocks with a rating of 0 to 10. With such competitive bids from previous years, the city council has been able to increase the number of blocks in the program to include all but one block with a rating from 0 to 20. gathering area on each side. For security, the upper floors will only be accessible via the elevator and the stairwell via the student’s magnetic ID that will permit them to their floor. The new hall will open in August of 2020. The annual cost for the new residence will be $7,300 per year which is only about $70 more a month than St. Scholastica and St. Benedict Halls which were the last new halls built in 2013. Heat gone but drought still hanging on By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The long, hot summer certainly seared itself into everyone in our area, but even though the heat has eased up, lack of rain remains despite a few showers earlier this week. Officially, we are in a state of “Moderate Drought”. Local lake and river levels have experienced to varying
degrees the lack of precipitation. “The sustained dry weather over the past six weeks or so has impacted all lake levels, especially on our larger (storage) reservoirs: James, Norman, Wylie and Wateree,” said Duke Energy spokesperson Kim Crawford.. “Natural surface evaporation and flow requirements have contributed
to these declining levels.” Recent lake level readings taken by Duke Energy showed the following results. Lake James is currently 1.5 feet below its normal seasonal target. Lake Norman is currently 2 feet below is normal seasonal target. Lake Wylie is 0.6’ and Wateree is only 0.2’ below their target levels. “On October 1, the Ca-
tawba basin was still barely in a normal drought condition based on reservoir storage, six-month average stream flow and the U.S. Drought Monitor,” Crawford said. “The lake levels will continue to decline, however, without above average rainfall this month. Our hydro operations team is operating conservatively, although See DROUGHT, Page 2

DROUGHT From Page 1 we’ve had to generate more energy this week to help meet system demand during this unseasonably hot weather, and we have to meet weekend recreation flow requirements. October is the last month for recreation flow releases.” If your lawn is looking lime shredded wheat, there still might be hope for a recovery with a period of rain. “Let’s keep our fingers crossed for some rain,” said Julie Flowers agriculture/consumer horticulture specialist with the NC Cooperative Extension office in Dallas. “As for lawns, tall fescue, which is what ninety percent of people in the Piedmont grow, can actually withstand four to six weeks without water. Though the grass may appear dead, more than likely it will simply go dormant until moisture arrives.” More than anything, it’s been the heat that has hit our region over the past several months. Last Wednesday and Thursday, temperatures flirted with the 100F mark and shattered records going back decades. According to the NC Climate Office, our area experienced an average daily maximum temperature of 92.3F in July, 90.3F in August, 92.2F in September, and so far in October 92.5F. As the cool wave that swept in last Saturday hinted, relief is in the offing. According to the Old Farmers Almanac, October 12-16 is predicted to be sunny and cold, October 17-28 sunny and cool, and October 29-31 rainy and cool. Looking even farther down the road, November 1-3 is predicted to be sunny and cool, Nov. 4-13 rainy and mild, November 14-17 sunny and cool, November 18-22 showers and cold, November 23-29 rain then sunny, and November 30 rainy and cool.

Gaston County has 12th confirmed rabies case of 2019 On Sunday September 29, 2019 at approximately 7:45pm Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement unit received a call from 2400 block of Sugar Lane Gastonia, NC 28056. The call was in reference to possible rabid animal. A family cat fought with a raccoon. The raccoon was killed during this incident. Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident. The deceased raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. On Tuesday October 1, 2019 the raccoon specimen tested positive for rabies. The 12 year old cat on Sugar Lane did have the required rabies vaccinations; however, the cat was seriously injured during the fight and ran off. Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement along with the community on Sugar Lane
searched for the cat. The cat is described as orange and white, weighing 13 pounds. If you see or find this cat in the area of Sugar Lane, call Gaston County Communications, 704-866-3300. A trap was set at the animal owner’s residence. Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass in the area of Sugar Lane to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area. The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement unit stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of their owners and community. This represents the twelfth confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.

Gaston County receives National Weather Service StormReady Certification On September 26, 2019 at 6:00pm Ms. Sandy LaCorte, a Meteorologist with the National Weather Service, presented StormReady certification to Gaston County Board of Commissioners Chairman Tracy Philbeck during a brief ceremony held at the Gaston County Police Department. During the last six months the Gaston County Office of Emergency Management has worked to meet the requirements of this program which include establishing a 24 hour warning point and operations center, having more than one way to receive weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public, creating a weather system that monitors weather conditions locally, promoting the importance of public
readiness through community seminars, and developing a formal hazardous weather plan which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises. As part of this process the Gaston County Office of Emergency Management distributed 76 weather alert radios to agencies and responders throughout Gaston County. These included town halls, fire departments, Gaston County Police Department, Gaston County 911 Center, Gaston County Sheriff’s Office, Gaston County Schools central office, Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services, Caromont Regional Medical Center, and the N.C. Forestry Service. A weather station was also installed at
the County Emergency Operations Center to monitor real time weather conditions in Gaston County. This data is available free to the public through the internet at www. weatherlink.com and through the Davis Weatherlink application for IPhone and Androids. The StormReady Program is designed to help communities prepare for severe weather with the communications and safety skills needed to save lives and propertybefore, during, and after a weather related incident occurs. For further information on the program contact Captain Myron Shelor, Interim Director, Gaston County Office of Emergency Management at 704-866-3332.

Being the Church Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
This past Sunday, the church I pastor celebrated its third anniversary together. We began as a church plant with just a small handful of people. We did not know what we going to do, or how we were going to accomplish it. However, we had a simple vision, and still do, and that is to take Jesus Christ to where people are. When I reflect on those early days, when we were just a few people with a vision, I am reminded of the early church as it began. Acts 2:42-47 gives us some insight into the everyday work of the early church. The early church also started as a small group of people. It was composed mainly of the disciples of Jesus, His mother and earthly brothers, and those faithful women who were such a great part of the Easter story. That church was faithful to the Great Commission. They proclaimed the message of Jesus to everyone. In one day, Peter led three thousand people to faith in Jesus Christ! This small body of believers grew from a handful of people, to a world changing church. The early church gives us a great example of what a true New Testament church should be. They were in love with God. Many of those in the early church walked with Jesus, and many saw the resurrected Jesus before He ascended to heaven. They loved Him, many would even die for Jesus. As churches today, we must have that same love for Jesus. We
cannot be simply fans of God, we must be all in. Jesus must be our priority. We must surrender our all to Him. We also must love one another. The early church faced Rev. Trent Tankin much persecution. They depended on one another, and they cared for each other. Too often in churches, we find unfortunate disagreements, and disunity. We must be one, one body with Jesus Christ as our head. If we truly love God, we will love one another. We must also love our neighbors. The early church loved all they met, and never missed an opportunity to preach the gospel to someone in need. As churches, we must see beyond our four walls, to those in our communities. Our church has a wonderful phrase we often quote, “fed people feed people.” This simply means we have been given the Word of God, and His love, now it is time to give that love of God to someone else who needs Jesus. When I reflect on the last three years of our church, my mind is flooded with many wonderful memories of lives changed through the grace of Jesus Christ. I am sure the early church often reflected on all of the things they saw Jesus do, and what He had done through their work. However, we do not get lost in the past, we look to the future. As churches, may we remember where we came from, yet more importantly, may we always look to what God is going to do next. May we always be prepared to carry out God’s vision for us.

Gaston Together organizes Pride In Gaston Traveling Tour In the summer of 2000, Gaston Together began a program to enhance the awareness of Community Pride in Gaston County school children. By building on the study of the community in the third grade, Gaston Together worked with Gaston County Schools to develop the “Pride in Gaston Traveling Tour” field trip for all third graders in the county, including both public and private school students. As of the 2019 - 2020 school year, over 47,500 students have participated in this program since its inception. This year’s tour began in early September and will conclude by the end of October. The 2019 tour includes a program and tour of the Snoezelen Room at Holy Angels in Belmont, a planetarium show, “Earth, Moon and Sun” at the Schiele Museum
in Gastonia and a tour with an “1800s mock trial” in the Old Courthouse at the Gaston County Museum of Art and History in Dallas. Activity Books are provided for each student. The “Pride in Gaston” Books now feature 16 sites of interest throughout Gaston County. Special funding was provided this year by the Pearl Dixon Balthis Foundation to add new sites to the book. The new sites featured in the book are the Loray Mill and MLK Plaza both located in Gastonia as well as Goat Island Park located in Cramerton. Some of the other sites in the activity book are the Hoyle House, the C. Grier Beam Truck Museum and the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. The Activity Book features a pen and ink drawing of each site, a few facts about the site

Program partners include: Dominion Energy, Carolina Trust Bank, Tindol Ford Subaru ROUSH, Times Oil/Team Foundation, Watson Insurance and Alliance Bank and Trust. Following the tour, the students are asked to write an essay entitled, “What Makes Me Proud to Live in Gaston County.” These essays are entered into Gaston Together’s “Proudest Kid in Gaston County,” essay contest. The individual school winners and the overall county winner are announced later in the spring at Gaston Together’s Community Leadership Award event. The “Pride in Gaston Traveling Tour” has proven

Hunter Huss High School receives donation For the third time in two years, Gaston County Schools is the recipient of a generous donation from National Pawn to support music education. National Pawn donated more than 100 musical instruments and $2,000 to the marching band program at Hunter Huss High School during a surprise announcement on Wednesday, September 18. The donation is part of National Pawn’s ongoing commitment to support music programs in schools. After the students settled in the band room for their fourth period class, National Pawn owner Bob Moulton stepped forward to present a $2,000
check and an assortment of instruments including guitars, trumpets, trombones, flutes, clarinets, saxophones, recorders, and more to band director Heaven Watson-Weary. “We are so grateful for Mr. Moulton and National Pawn,” said Watson-Weary as she described why this donation came at the perfect time. “We have been doing car washes and fundraisers trying to raise money for repairs, instruments, and new uniforms.” Moulton, who played in the band when he was in school, said it is an honor to give the instruments and funds to Hunter Huss.

South Point blasts past East Gaston 54-6 By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
After a tough 30-28 loss to Burns the South Point Red Raiders football team bounced back by crushing the visiting East Gaston Warriors 54-6. It was Black Friday at South Point for this game and Red Raiders were decked out in the traditional all black uniforms. Right from the start of the game the Red Raiders started to slam their long-time rivals and never gave up. South Point jumped out and took an early lead off of
a pair of long runs by Devon King and Ray Rose. King punched it in for 50 yards at while Rose broke off a 42 yard touchdown run with three minutes left to go in the quarter. A pair of Dylan Nicks PATS put the Red Raiders up 14-0. In the second quarter South Point’s run game went into overdrive as Big Red scored three big touchdown runs. For starters, Ray Rose lit the scoreboard up with another pair of long runs. This time, Rose jetted into the end-zone from 42 and 51 yards out. With under two

Another successful PAT by Dylan Nicks put the score at 34-0 South Point at halftime. As the third quarter got underway everything was still all South Point. As it turned out Hogue wasn’t done for the night. With about nine minutes to go in the third quarter, Hogue broke off a long run of his own. This one from 31 yards out. A Nicks PAT put the Red Raiders up 41-0. Right after Hogue’s score the Red Raiders made it back into the end zone. This time with a 15 yard Devon King run. King’s run put South Point up 47-0. South Point ended the night with 440 yards of total offense. Almost all of it on the ground as the Red Raiders ran over EG averaging 13 yards a carry. In the fourth quarter KJ Dagout scored the Warriors only points of the night with a touchdown run. With about seven minutes to go to the Red Raiders were still in control with a commanding 47-6 lead. The final points of the night came off of a Will Rhinehart 20 yard touchdown run and a Daniel O’Hanlon PAT. Ray Rose had a stellar night under center for South Point. Pinewood Elementary to participate in Mt. Holly Lantern Parade... The Awaken Art Gallery is hosting another Lantern Parade this year in Mt. Holly, and Pinewood has again been invited to participate. Art teacher, Mrs. Ballard, will be working with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders after school who wish to make a lantern and walk in this community event. Join Mrs. Ballard on the following Thursday afternoons from 2:30 - 4:30
pm:Thursday, October 17th and Thursday, October 24th. The actual parade will take place at 7:00 pm on Saturday, October 26th in downtown Mount Holly. The theme of the parade this year is: “Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales.” Pinewood will create lanterns representing the fairy tale of “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The lanterns are not hard to make, but adult
volunteers are needed to help students work with wire cutters, duct tape, and hot glue. Contact lwballard@gaston.k12.nc.us to let her know if your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader would like to participate and if you are able to volunteer to help. Also, please write a note to your child’s homeroom teacher on the days that he/she is staying to work on lanterns. Gaston Schools photo
South Point coach Adam Hodge has a word with the team. A group of folks from the former Reid High attended the South Point game.
SOUTH POINT From Page 16 three touchdowns. Hunter Hogue had a pretty good night as well raking up 69 yards off of seven carries and a pair of touchdowns. The win was definitely a step in the right direction for the 3-4 Red Raiders. “I thought we played well,” head coach Adam
Hodge said. “The offense played well as a unit. The team is getting better.” Once the game was well in hand, South Point started to rotate key players to give others a shot at some varsity playing time. “We played a lot of guys and that’s good for depth,”
South Point Red Raiders
Hodge added. South Point played well on both sides of the ball. The Red Raider defense definitely had a good night holding the Warriors to 147 yards of total offense. This week South Point draws a bye. The staff will work on a few things and take advantage of the time off. “The bye week gives us an opportunity to get some guys healed up,” Hodge said. This week the 0-6 Warriors will travel to Rutherfordton to take on the 4-3 R-S Central Hilltoppers.

2019 RACE SCHEDULE & WINNER UPDATES
The Upward Bound Summer Academy Program at Gaston College brought the North Carolina Community College System’s BioNetwork STEM Outreach Program to the College’s Dallas campus this summer. The 60 students from Hunter Huss and Bessemer City high schools who participated in the program learned about STEM research while forging friendships and building confidence in their academic capabilities. The students were in grades 9 through 12. BioNetwork encourages students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers and the Upward Bound program provided interactive hands-on activities for participants. Those activities included: What’s That Flavor: Students used spectrophotometers to analyze the amount of FD&C dyes in a sample mystery lollipop and compare it to other known flavors within the same bag. Super Sleuth Sampler: Students became super sleuths as they analyzed evidence to solve a crime. Beginner sleuths progressed through a series of stations, such as Microscopy, Blood Typing, Blood Spatter Analysis, White Powder ID, Dental Impressions, Chromatography, and Fiber ID. More advanced sleuths focused efforts on immunoassays and gel electrophoresis. Piguliar: Zoonosis, a disease that can be transmitted to humans from animals, is increasingly becoming a global public health concern.

Mountain Island thumps Union Academy 50-0 By John Wilson John.Bannernews@gmail.com
Friday night’s football game between the Mountain Island Raptors and Union Academy Cardinals was a pretty one-sided affair. The home crowd must have been thrilled as they saw the Raptors dominate the Cardinals on both sides of the ball on their way to a 50-0 win. MI played Union Academy hard in the first half. The Raptors were able to go into the locker room at halftime up 41-0. In the second half MI put the brakes on. With this game already pretty much decided the Raptors used the third and fourth quarters as a chance to play some younger players and worked on their depth. Even then, Mountain Island
was still able to score twice in the second half. The Raptors were able to score a final touchdown in the third quarter and a safety in the fourth. It fair to say that the Raptors really did have a good night. To get the job done MI was able to put together a well-rounded offensive game plan. On the ground, senior running back Elijah Burris finished the game with 278 yards off of 13 carries. Burris also scored three touchdowns. In the air, quarterback Demetrius Washington had a solid performance. Washington went eight for 12 for 142 yards and two touchdowns. He ended the game with a very impressive 146.5 quarterback rating. The Raptors top receiver was Trae Nicholson with 102 yards off of three catches.
Defensively the Raptors were relentless. The Raptors harassed Cardinals quarterbacks and also generated turnovers. MI finished the game with two turnovers and four sacks. Mountain Island’s top tacklers were Gabe Stephens and Jaishaun Boyd with seven stops each. Mountain Island is now 4- 2 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Piedmont 1A Conference play. The Southern Piedmont is getting tight right now. Bessemer City and Thomas Jefferson are still undefeated. However, there’s still a lot of football left. It may be a tall order but MI still has a chance to make a play for the conference crown. This week the Raptors will head over to Cherryville to play the 2-5 Ironmen.
Lingerfeldt Elementary participated in International Walk to School Day last Wednesday, a day that focuses on the benefits of walking to school. Students and parents gathered before school to walk from the nearby Family Dollar parking lot to their school. They were joined by Gastonia mayor Walker Reid and representatives from the Gaston County Department of Health & Human Services and LANXESS, one of the school’s outstanding business partners. A special thanks to the Gastonia Police Department for making sure all the children arrived at school safely. Gaston Schools photo

Tri County Animal Rescue
Pet of the Week Tri-County Animal Rescue Pet of the Week is a beautiful Chihuahua named Frankie. He is 9 years old but has LOTS of spunk. Frankie weighs 8 pounds and most of that is ears! He loves to play radar antenna! Frankie has beautiful chocolate short hair which makes grooming very simple…bath and brushing. He has a song in his heart which he will sing for you at times. Frankie is good with everyone and gets along with other pets. Frankie is neutered, current on vaccines, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Come on out…we will be looking for you.
If you are looking for an addition to your family, please come out and meet our pets this weekend. We have many available pets at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard this Saturday noon to 6 pm.
About Tri-County Animal Rescue Tri-County Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization serving Lincoln, Gaston and other surrounding counties. We are committed to ending pet homelessness in this area and we need your continued support. If you cannot adopt a pet, then support Tri-County in other ways. We need volunteers and donations to continue our mission of finding homes for these unwanted animals. Please help Tri-County Animal Rescue continue to save pets by adopting your next pet this weekend? Our “needs” list includes: towels, Clorox, laundry detergent, paper towels, dry dog food and dry cat food. For more information, call 704.263.2444, send an email to TriCountyAnimalRescue@ yahoo.com, visit us on the web at www. tcar.us or on FaceBook at Tri-County Animal Rescue. Chihuahuas adore warmth! They will seek out the tiniest sunspot in which to bask, and they tunnel under blankets and towels. You have to be careful whenever you sit down on your sofa or bed, as there could be a Chihuahua tucked under there.

Chihuahuas are comical, entertaining, and loyal little dogs. They are absolutely brimming with personality – often a quirky and eccentric personality unmatched by any other breed. Chihuahuas do seem to recognize and prefer their own breed, so it’s a great idea to keep two of them. They keep each other company when you’re gone, they play together, clean each other’s ears (Chihuahuas can be obsessive ear-lickers!), and keep each other warm by snuggling together.
