Governor Roy Cooper tours TechWorks Gaston in Belmont by Alan Hodge alan.bannernews@gmail.com
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper made a trip to Belmont last week and toured the TechWorks facility located at 35 Ervin St. “I have heard how outstanding TechWorks is and wanted to come see it for myself,” Gov. Cooper said. “TechWorks is an amazing opportunity for Gaston County and people here are responding to it in an overwhelmingly positive way.” During his visit, Gov. Cooper got a look at TechWork’s innovative space, met with co-working clients, and learned about the Tech Academy offerings. He also watched as the Dream Center’s sixth to eighth grade students were instructed by Sealed Air mechanical engineer Morgan Stewart on how

Cooper observed instructor Deb Alzner, an Information Technology professional with 25 years of programming experience, as she led a class of sixteen fifth grade girls from New Hope Elementary learn how to program a maze game using the Scratch programming language. Students chose a character, designed a maze, programmed their character to move using arrow keys, and programmed what happened when their character accidentally bumped into the maze walls or safely reaches the end. “We were very pleased with Gov. Cooper’s visit to TechWorks,” said Terry Cox, executive director Gaston
Innovation Group. “It was uplifting and productive. Everyone was very appreciative of Gov. Cooper’s time and his genuine interest in their personal pursuits. It meant a great deal to all of the school kids, and I know it will be a memorable day for many of them.” Gov. Cooper also met with Belmont and Gaston County business and government officials during his time at TechWorks. “In the roundtable discussion, Gov. Cooper specifically mentioned our initial visit with him at the Capital in Raleigh, April 2017,” Cox said. “He said we were so enthusiastic and passionate that he knew we would do something impressive, even though he didn’t get what that was at the time! On Tuesday, NC Gov. Roy Cooper paid a visit last week to the TechWorks business/technology incubator in he was finally able to have Belmont. During his tour Gov. The South Point VFD has taken delivery of a new and much needed truck. The vehicle is a 2019 Ford F250 that is called a “QRV”, that is Quick Response Vehicle. It was purchased from
Asheville Ford for $50,000 and built by Global Public Safety based in Roebuck, S.C. The keys to the truck were handed over to the South Point Fire Dept. on Oct. 11. The truck replaces one that was damaged in an accident. Insurance paid the bill.
“The new truck will be used to assist in medical emergencies and to transport personnel,” said fire chief Barry Joye. “We are real happy to get it.” Equipment that will be kept on the truck includes medic bags, oxygen kit, backSee TRUCK, Page 3

Tractor parade features Gaston beauty queens By Todd Hagans Have you ever seen beauty queens riding on tractors in a parade? You did if you attended the recent Cotton Ginning Days Festival. Miss Gastonia Brianna Rochford, Miss Mount Holly Lindsey Woodward, and Miss Gaston County’s Outstanding Teen Jaylen Holt were special guests for the tractor parade that made its way around the festival grounds on Saturday, October 12. It’s a tradition to have a tractor parade during the three-day festival, which brings thousands of people to Biggerstaff Park in Dallas, and the parade gets its share of spectators and onlookers. And, having a beauty queen waving from a John Deere is like icing on the cake for festival enthusiasts. Over the past several years, the Miss Gastonia, Miss Gaston County, and Miss Mount Holly queens have been involved with the festival and parade, thanks to Rusty Friday and Johnny Friday of Friday Farms in Dal-
las. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the pageant winners who ride aboard the Friday family’s tractors. Rochford said it was the most unique opportunity that she’s had as Miss Gastonia. “Being in the tractor parade was a first for me, but it was a lot of fun,” said Rochford. “People were very friendly as we made our way around the festival. Best of all, I did not fall off of the tractor.” Rochford admitted that riding on the tractor was harder than it looked. The festival was one of the last public appearances for Rochford and her pageant sisters as they prepare to pass on their crowns on November 23 during the annual Miss Gastonia Scholarship Pageant. Right now, pageant organizers are recruiting contestants ages 13-25 to enter the competition and vie for the 2020 crowns. The winners will go on to represent Gastonia, Mount Holly, and Gaston County next summer in the Miss North Carolina pageant. Gaston County Parks and Recreation sponsors the an-

Tri-County Animal Rescue: CaroMont Health Foundation awards Gaston College Foundation $30,800 grant
Pet of the Week Our featured pet for this week is a Shih Tzu mix named Lilo. She is 3 years old and weighs 8 pounds. Lilo should not get any bigger. She has beautiful silky hair which will need grooming several times a year. Lilo is good with other dogs and loves people. She is a beautiful little girl that loves to be snuggled. Lilo is current on vaccines, microchipped and has been spayed. The Shih Tzu mix has long been a popular designer breed. Known for its adorable roundish face, this hybrid originated in the United States and is known to be quietly affectionate. Some of you might have a preference for certain colors when it comes to dogs and you’d be glad to know that the Shih Tzu mix does come in a variety of colors, including black, brown, cream or white, or a combination of those. Many dog lovers have a weakness for its adorable cute, floppy ears if it takes after its Shih Tzu parent. In addition, because of their adaptability and size, they also make good apartment dogs. Just remember though, some owners describe the Shih Tzu as a shy character if not properly given the chance to socialize and mingle with other humans or dogs. So take a walk in the park, and this way you’ll

and setup of simulators in various sites in the area. Simulation is a useful learning technique to improve student’s critical thinking skills, confidence, and competence, thereby leading to better patient outcomes and improved patient safety. For the past several years, Gaston College has used simulation as part of the healthcare training programs on campus resulting in increased pass rates and graduation rates. With the expansion of health care training programs through external partnerships, the grant sponsored mobile simulation labs will provide students throughout the county
with enhanced training. “We are so grateful for this investment from CaroMont Health Foundation,” said Dr. Patricia Skinner, President of Gaston College. “It is a testimony to the importance of simulation in training future health care professionals at Gaston College and we are excited that the grant will enable us to help more students throughout the community get the training and education that will prepare them for rewarding careers.” For more information on the project, please contact Leslie Pressley, Director of Nursing Programs at Pressley.Leslie@gaston.edu

Saying Goodbye Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
eled, Paul encountered some from the Ephesian church. They knew Paul would leave soon, and they feared saying goodbye to their friend and fellow Christian. Luke writes of this in Acts 20:37-38, saying “Then they all wept freely, and fell on Paul’s neck and kissed him, sorrowing most of all for the words which he spoke, that they would see his face no more” (NKJV). Those from Ephesus knew that they would never see their friend again. It was more than they could take, and they openly grieved Paul’s departure. Like those from the Ephesian church, we never want to say goodbye. Unfortunately, too many people will face goodbyes today, apart from Jesus Christ. Many people will reject God, and have no relationship with Him. They will face eternal separation one day from not only God, but also from all they have ever loved. Nothing can be more tragic, than leaving this world without knowing
If you asked most people what they fear, you probably would find that the answer would be saying goodbye. All of us fear saying goodbye to people we love. It breaks our hearts to think of a close friend moving away, or the death of a loved one. No one likes to think of the prospects of never seeing a loved one again. Each of us has faced at some point, the loss of a family member or friend, and we know the sorrow Saturday Oct 26th – 6 PM, Lowesville Gospel Concerts at Living Word Ministries – 1062 South of saying goodbye. When we have Jesus in our hearts, we will never have to say goodbye. Even death will only be temporal for the believer. One day in heaven we will be reunited will those whom we have loved, and most of all, we will see Jesus. If you fear goodbyes, then look to Jesus. Give your life to Jesus today, and live forever with Him in heaven. Do not stop at your own salvation though. Tell others about Jesus. Tell your family, friends, coworkers, and people you do not know. Tell everyone, so that no one has to ever say goodbye. May we always remember, there are no goodbyes in heaven!

to heaven prays, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Luke 18:13b NIV. The tax collector, in his humility, pleads for compassion. And, due to the prayer of a convicted heart, he is justified. When I read this passage, I often wonder if the Pharisee’s heart was changed. So, let me finish my story. It is the story of a changed heart. I don’t know when the turn began. Maybe it was the first night of my conviction when I began to repent and pray for God to transform my heart. The second day, I found myself smiling every time this person would speak. I noticed the hardness that was once there was replaced with compassion. And, by the third day, I was even standing in agreement with the stranger’s suggestions. I left that meeting no longer a stranger, but with a new friend. We often don’t see reality as it is but through our own biases and often distorted lens. Desire to see ourselves and others, not in comparing to others, but in light of God. We are not a product of our achievements and position in life. We are a product of God’s divine mercy.

Veronét Vineyards and Winery now open By Loretta Cozart On Friday, September 27, Veronét Vineyards and Winery opened officially to the public. Kings Mountain’s newest business is located at 1549 Ike Brooks Drive. The 6,300 square-foot main winery building is accented by a wall of oversized glass doors that highlight the vineyard and mountain views, and features an expansive open floor-plan tasting room, a 28-foot main bar and 20-foot secondary bar, a private tasting room with floor to ceiling wine cellaring, and a 70-foot outdoor patio. The property includes the main winery, outdoor patio, and large outdoor space overlooking the vineyards. The vineyards, set with southern exposure and home to constant south-westerly winds, are planted on a gentle slope and accented by towering pines, Crowders Mountain, and Kings Mountain Pinnacle. The nearly 5 acres of plantings are made up of Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and Chambourcin vines. The Sullivan family is excited to welcome their first estate harvest in the fall of
2020, and currently works to produce the healthiest vines while maintaining minimal impact on the land through a reduced use of chemicals and a variety of manual processes. The property and winery will initially be open only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for guests to sample a selection of eight wines that the family sourced through vineyard and winery partnerships throughout the United States, allowing them to focus on cultivating their first estate-produced vintages in 2021. “By using more environmentally friendly controls we know we are helping to protect our vineyard for future generations,” explained Sullivan. “You may see a few more weeds in our vineyard compared to others, but we feel that is a small price to pay to preserve the integrity of the land.” Veronét Vineyards and Winery is a family-owned venture dedicated to sustainable farming practices and will be a convenient escape to enjoy beautiful scenery, delicious food and wines. “Even if you aren’t a big fan of wine, we hope folks

Red Raiders mix it up more roll past East Rutherford 42-14 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
The year 2019 has been a wild ride for the South Point football team. This year the Red Raiders have experienced incredible highs and some real tough lows. But through it all, Big Red keep pushing. On Friday night the Red Raiders had what can only be described as a good game in a 42-14 victory over the 0-8 East Rutherford Cavaliers in a Southwestern 2A Conference matchup. "I was just proud of how we played together," head coach Adam Hodge said. "We played hard and you can see it." All year the Red Raiders have been tweaking their heralded Redbone offense looking for the right combination of players to make it run smoothly. Due to injuries and a search for better production, South Point has put different players in at quarterback. Normally a combination of different quarterbacks would upset team balance. However, at South Point, it seems to be working quite well. Depending on the situation and the circumstance coach Hodge had, up to the East Rutherford game, put in Javus Davis, Ray Rose, and Devon King into the lineup. Against the Cavaliers, another quarterback, Will Rhinehart, was added to the mix. With Ray Rose and Javus Davis on the sidelines with injuries, Rhinehart shared snaps with Devon King and the pair straight up got the job done. "We have to tip our hat to Will Rhinehart," coach Hodge said. "He stepped in and played quarterback. He ran the option well." Rhinehart finishing the game which seven carries for 66 yards and a touchdown. During his time at quarterback, Devon King delivered a spectacular performance. King finished up with 13 carries that went for 145 yards and four scores. "Devon played quarterback too and had four touchdowns," coach Hodge said. "He's just an explosive kid." South Point ended the game with 274 yards of total offense. With Rhinehart being added to the growing stable of quarterbacks, South Point will have even more chances to shake things up. If Davis and Rose can get healthy that will give South Point four players capable of playing quarterback at any given time. Each with a different skill set. That combination gives the coaching staff incredible

Gaston County Middle School softball championship
Gaston County Schools wants to congratulate all of its middle school softball athletes for a great season, but also recognize John Chavis Middle School and Cramerton Middle School on an exciting county championship game last week. Congratulations to John Chavis Middle School, 2019 Gaston County Middle School Softball Champions. Here are some scenes from the championship game courtesy Carolina Top Shots and Gaston School.
Cramer bounces back with 21-9 win over Wildcats by John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
It looks like a little bit of rest and a change at quarterback is just what Stuart Cramer's football team needed to get back on track. The Storm stopped a fourgame slide with a 21-9 win last Friday over North Gaston in a crucial Big South 3A Conference clash. With the exception of a tight first quarter, Cramer was pretty much in control the entire game. The last few weeks had not been easy for the Storm. Cramer struggled in recent games as the roster was whittled down by one injury after another. The team needed to heal up, and the bye week gave the Storm a chance to do that. Going into the North Gaston game most of the starting roster had returned to action. "It was a good win for us," head coach Ben McMillan said. "It was good to get back in the win column and have most of our guys healthy. Getting critical players back on the field was important, but there were other issues to address. Equally important was the need for the Storm to breathe life into an inconsistent offense. Cramer may just have found the missing piece to their offensive problems in freshman quarterback Justin Rocquemore. Rocquemore went 13 for 22 with 185 yards and two touchdowns in his varsity starting debut. Coach McMillan believes that Rocquemore is the real deal. A freshman that has not only the skills but the intangibles needed to play on the varsity level. "He's a special kid," McMillan said of Rocquemore. "He's a really smart football player who can really do some
great things with the football. He's a real leader for a freshman." Rocquemore added to what can only be described as an excellent offensive performance turned in by the Storm. By game's end, Cramer had racked up 373 yards of total offense. Cramer beat North Gaston with a balanced offensive game plan. The load was equally distributed between running and passing. Cramer's backs ran for 188 yards. Most of the ground game was handled by senior halfback Tyreese Morris. Morris had 177 yards and a touchdown. Top receiving honors went to De'angelo Burton who ended the game with four catches that went for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In the game against the
Wildcats, it looked like the Cramer defense had returned to their early-season form. All night the Storm "D" held the line and kept North Gaston in check. Cramer's top defenders were Patrick Abernathy and Arias Nash. Abernathy had 14 tackles, 11 of which were solo stops, while Nash had 13 tackles. This win was big for the Storm. Cramer is now 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference action. "Hopefully we can build on this and use this momentum to move forward." Coach McMillan added. This week Cramer will host the 0-7 Ashbrook Greenwave in another conference face-off.

October 24, 2019 EDITION Last week's lottery numbers were drawn by loyal BannerNews reader, Merrily Brackett, of Blossman Services Inc., 6109 Wilkinson Blvd., Belmont. The winning numbers were 1, 13 & 43. No ballot received guessed all three numbers correctly, so the jackpot will remain at $10,000 until it’s won. Make sure you have your entry in by the 9am deadline on Monday for your chance to win!
THE BANNER NEWS LOTTERY
The Ban ner News Lottery is this simple! Choose your favorite 3 numbers between 1 and 50 (not using the same number twice) and enter the numbers in the 3 circles below in any order.
Numbers will be drawn each Monday Morning. Look in next week's Banner-News for the 3 WINNING NUMBERS! LOTTERY RULES Absolutely one entry per household each week! No photo copies will be allowed. Any lottery entries that have the same handwriting or appear to be in conjunction with any other entry will be disqualified. Entries must be complete with name, household address and phone number.
