Four Troop 58 Boy Scouts earn Eagle designation By Alan Hodge Alan@cfmedia.info
It’s a special day when a Boy Scout earns his Eagle designation, but when four are recognized at once, it’s even better. That was the scene recently at the Reflection
Pointe development clubhouse when a quartet of Troop 58 members became Eagles. The event was attended by a group of wellwishers as well as Belmont mayor Charles Martin and Congressional member Rep. Patrick McHenry.
The scouts included Joshua Millspaw, Lewis Pontz, Christian Pinto, and Nathan Brown. Millspaw is an 18-yearold senior at South Point High. He’s been in the Boy Scouts for 12 years. He became interested in scouting

Photo by Alan Hodge at an early age. “I was six years old when I started,” he said. What sparked his interest? “They told me I could shoot a BB gun, learn to start a fire, and go to a NASCAR race,” he said. To earn his Eagle badge, Millspaw took to the woods with helpers, rakes, and shovels. “It’s a walking trail for the South Point cross country running team,” he said. “It’s behind Page Primary School on 30-acres of unused
woods.” Millspaw explained why he feels it’s vital for folks his age to help others. “Belmont is a great place,” he said. “We have great young people and it’s important that they get involved in the community.” Pontz is 17-years-old and also a South Point senior. He’s been a Boy Scout for 11 years. “I joined because I thought it would be a fun, cool thing to do,” he said. “My favorite part is camping
outdoors.” For his project, Pontz did some remodeling at the adult day care facility called The Center. “I took a spare room and turned it into a ‘man cave’ for the male clients,” he said. “It’s a place they can hang out.” Pontz described what he did. “I installed a TV, made a table, made book shelves, and hung some signed sports pictures,” he said. Mt. Holly Community Garden gearing up for the holidays By Alan Hodge Alan@cfmedia.info
Cool weather is here and the Mt. Holly Community Garden, 126 N. Main St., is not only full of fall greens ga-
lore, its also gearing up for the fifth annual Christmas Enchantment at the Garden event. A visit to the garden last week with MHCG vice president and board member Erin
Denison revealed some recent improvements to the site and plans for the big Christmas event. “We have been working hard at the garden,” Denison See GARDEN, Page 7

North Belmont is poised for a major commercial development. At the November 11 meeting of the Belmont city council, that body approved a rezoning request that will pave the way for construction of a large business park at Woodlawn and Cason streets. The development will be known as River West Business Park. The rezoning applicant was Belmont In-

dustrial, LLC represented by Scott Bortzk. The rezoning plans are for two warehouse and office structures to built with a total area of 60,000 sq. ft. The property where the project will take place is owned by Alliance Real Estate III. When completed, it is estimated the project could generate 250 to 350 new jobs. The project will likely require road improvements one of which would eliminate the blind intersection at Acme Rd. and Woodlawn and also
shut Centerview St. The 40 acre site where the development is slated has a long and interesting history going back to the 19th century when it was part of a 500 acre plot that Robert Smith purchased from Catawba Indians in 1830 for $1,000. Later, the land was the site of Acme Spinning Mill. That textile facility opened around 1920 and operated not one, but two mills. It also had a village of company houses See NORTH BELMONT, Page 2

A message from American Legion Post 144 Comrades, We have heard from a number of our members that they would come to the Social Quarters more often if there was no smoking inside the club room. While we certainly don’t want to alienate our regulars who do smoke, the group that is responsible for running the Social Quarters has decided to have one whole day with no smoking just to see what the response would be. So this Friday, November 22nd, there will be no smok-
ing. Efforts will be made to “freshen up” the Social Quarters for a clean, fresh smell. We will also have a Darts tournament starting at 7:00 PM. The Darts tournament will be a Blind Doubles contest with a $5 entry fee. The games to be played will be determined by the number of players present. You don’t need to be any good - we’ll gladly take your money! Sincerely, Bill Blackett, 2nd Vice Commander Post 144 Belmont, NC

So, what prompted Pontz to do a project benefiting senior citizens? “It’s just the way I was made,” he said. “I like to help people and this project was a good way.” Pinto is 17-years-old and also a South Point senior. He’s been involved in Scouting for eight years. “My parents took me to a scout meeting and I felt like it would be a good place for building friendships,” he said. Pinto’s project saw him put in some hard work at Holy Angels. “I repaired the roof of the oxygen storage building,” he said. “I also redid some shelves in another shed and did some landscaping outside.” Pinto again pointed to his parents as inspiration for his project. “I always believed in volunteering,” he said. “Everyone should do a good thing daily.” Last, but not least in the Troop 58 Eagle Scout lineup is Brown, a 17-year-old South Point senior who has been a Boy Scout for ten years. “I heard about scouting in second grade when a member of Troop 56 came to Belmont Central Elementary and talked about it,” he said. “It sounded pretty neat.” For his Eagle project, Brown also made Holy Angels his place of choice. “I did some sanding and painting of handrails,” he said. “I also dug up some dead shrubs.” Brown sees activities like
SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY BENEFITS
his project as a jumping-off point for later life. “I think it’s a stepping stone,” he said. “It’s hard to make changes in the world if you don’t start in your own community.” Besides being special due to the fact that four Boy Scouts were named Eagle, the ceremony was also bittersweet because for Troop 58, based at Park St. UMC in Belmont, this could be the last Eagle ceremony it will hold- for the foreseeable future. To recognize that fact, a large display of Troop 58 memorabilia going back decades was on display at the event. Items that attendees perused included Troop 58 flags, newspaper clippings, and plenty of photos. Park St. UMC scout representative Ken Taylor ex-
plained what the deal is with Troop 58. “Troop 58 has existed for 70 years,” He said. “But kids these days have so many other options for activities and for many being a Boy Scout is not the first one.” Cub Scout groups, called “Packs”,have traditionally been the “feeder” organizations for the Boy Scouts, but that well has dried up for Troop 58. “We haven’t had any Cub Scout Pack 58 boys in a couple of years,” said Taylor. Come February, 2020, Troop 58’s charter will expire. After that its future is in limbo. “We won’t have an active group unless there’s a renewal in interest,” said Taylor. “It’s somewhat melancholy.”

The Aftermath of John Fisher: A True Story Morning Glory As dangerous as this may be, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. The “what-if’s” and “could have’s” have been the toys in my attic, as I am overwhelmed with photographs and memories (as the old Jim Croce song once sang). If I could go back, would I have done things any differently? Did I say enough? Was I there enough? Did I handle everything correctly? And most importantly, was I the man he hoped that I would one day become? On the morning of October 17th, I woke up to the phone call that I had been expecting for a long time. My father, through the many years of ups and downs in the medical system, prevailing test after test after test ten-fold, had passed away. I loved my father in life and still do after his passing, which is why I found it strange that I didn’t fall apart the way that I thought I would upon receiving the news. It was a feeling that left me sort of numb, yet I was at peace knowing that he was no longer in any pain and knowing that he would never have to be poked and prodded for a diagnosis or a cure ever again. Initially, everything was about the funeral and there wasn’t much time to digest everything. I wrote his obituary and spoke at his service which left me with closure, yet there is still a missing piece of my heart that’s gone with him. There is SO much left in the rearview and it’s all I have left… All I can think about is his work truck pulling into our driveway after a week of being away and him bringing home his life all in two arms. He would have a sack of dirty clothes, a lunchbox, a cooler, a suitcase, a briefcase, and groceries he didn’t finish from his hotel stay. He would eat pork n’ beans and potato salad religiously, even after he was off the road. I can’t remember a time when he didn’t have some form of tobacco on him whether it was cigarettes or chewing tobacco. He would alternate from time to time and although I was curious about the contents of that silver pouch, I never let it get the best of me. In my early child-
hood, there were times he was a stranger from him working out of town but when I grew up, he became my hero without even knowing it. There were bad times however; it’s no secret that Superman has his kryptonite. Beer and bourbon Shelton Fisher became a couple of the essential food groups in our household not long after he was laid off his job. He worked loyally and wholeheartedly for this company for 26 years, and all in one day they washed their hands of him as if he were a temp. Through thick and thin, he still provided for us but there would be a bottle in the bottom cabinet that needed a refill. As the years went on and his thirst got stronger, the bottles got bigger and they got empty faster. There were many times I would get mad at him over it. There were several nights where I carried him to bed. There were many times that I followed in his footsteps and then swore I would never do that again; never become the grisly beast of bourbon, but even in those times I could never bring myself to EVER not love him. Call me foolish, call me dumb, I called him father and he called me son. I sit here at 6:40 on a cold November morning in this rickety rental, listening to the raindrops hit my window unit as a train bellows in the distance. He woke me up this morning (along with a coughing spell) with memories. I have never felt more like a kid again than when I’m stuck in these thoughts. All I can see is him in his brown leather jacket, denim button-down shirt, company hat, with a cigarette hanging off his lower lip like he’s set to face the day. Maybe I’m just going crazy or still haven’t fully processed everything yet, but I don’t think there is ever a point where you can say that you don’t miss someone you loved.

Scenes from 2018 Christmas Enchantment in the Garden by Scott Griffin

GARDEN From Page 1 said. “One improvement has been the new retaining wall and entrance at the rear. The wall is planted with native plants and the entrance is designed to give people with mobility issues easier access to the garden. It was done with a grant from the Mt. Holly Community Impact Fund and volunteers from Clariant Corp.” Another new addition to the garden is a beautiful mural being painted on the side of the tool shed by Stanley artist Boyce McKinney. “It’s a work in progress,” Denison said. “It should be finished by early spring.” Several of the 50+ beds at the garden are currently decorated with autumnal scenes including a variety of scarecrows

Every week, people are looking for businesses just like yours.
I had an opportunity this week to see a good friend of mine. I do not get to see him often, but I am very thankful for him. In my early days of church planting, this friend encouraged me, prayed for me, and helped me work toward carrying out God’s vision to plant a church. We all appreciate knowing that someone is thankful for us. It means a lot to know we have impacted someone’s life in some way. This thanksgiving season we have been talking about all of the ways we are thankful to God for His blessings. Have you ever considered that God is thankful for you? Psalms 8:3-5 says “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which you have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” (NKJV) David, before he was a mighty king, spent many evenings as a shepherd looking up into the night sky. As he viewed the moon and the stars, he stood in awe that the same God who created so many wonderful things, created and cared for mankind. David did not understand it, but he recognized that God was thankful for us. Just as David was amazed, so should we be as well, that God is grateful
for us! Throughout the Bible, we see many ways God expresses His thanks for us. He loves us. This truth is evident in every Rev. Trent Tankin verse of God’s word. All the things God does for us is because of His great love for His creation. God also corrects us. Like a parent raising a child, God seeks to help us grow more like Jesus every day. God also bears with us. We sin and rebel over and over again, yet God gives us chance after chance. We can also see God’s thanks for us in His sacrifice. Jesus Christ left the glory of heaven, to become a man of sorrows. He died for us that we may live. Ultimately, we know God is thankful for us in the fact that He desires for us to be with Him. The Bible is an unfolding plan of redemption as God draws us to Him through Jesus. In an age of hate, vengeance, and hopelessness, it is easy to feel unloved. It is easy to feel unappreciated, maybe even worthless. However, when you consider that God is thankful for you, that changes everything! God loves you, and gave His all for you, Jesus. I would say He is very thankful for you! This thanksgiving season, as we all give thanks for God’s blessings, take a moment to thank God for being thankful for you!

Abbey’s Abrom has game-high DeQuan Abrom (center) scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first half and Sean Halloran and Romeao Ferguson each topped double figures, leading Belmont Abbey to an 85-73 victory over cross-town rival Johnson C. Smith last Wednesday night. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-1 overall, while the Golden Bulls were playing their season opener. Halloran finished with 16 points and a seasonhigh seven assists, while Fer-
guson added 15 points and five boards. Charles Solomon just missed his second double-double of the year, registering 13 points and nine boards. Belmont Abbey shot 46.3 percent for the contest (53.6 before intermission) and held a 36-29 rebounding advantage. The difference in the game came from beyond the arc, where The Abbey connected on 11 of 20 (55.0 percent). Belmont Abbey built a 19-point lead, 7253, on a Ferguson three, but Johnson C. Raptors move on to second round after squashing Community School of Davidson 61-0 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
The Mountain Island Raptors rumbled pass the Community School of Davidson Spartans 61-0 in the first round of North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 1AA football playoffs. Powered by a stifling defense and a hard-charging rushing attack the Raptors made short work of the Spartans. This was a very one-sided affair with MI up 48-0 at the half. The Spartans really had no shot at winning this one. The Raptors kept it on the ground for most of the game with 295 yards of rushing offense. Once again the Raptors top runner was Elijah Burris. Burris only played in the first half but was still able to run for 207 yards and four touchdowns.
On the other side of the ball, the Mountain Island defense was once again totally dominating. The Raptors generated four turnovers and stuffed the Spartans at every turn. MI’s stopped tacklers were Brandon Jones with thirteen stops and Gabe Stephens with twelve. This was a decisive win, and the Raptors are definitely hungry for more. “It was a great playoff victory,” head coach Robert Washington said. “We did well in all three phases of the game led by our defense.” So far 2019 has been a banner year for the Raptors. The team is solid. The Raptors finished the regular season winning a share of the Southern Piedmont 1A title and go into the second round of the playoffs at 10-2. “It was a big milestone for these young men,” Washington went on to say. “It was our second double-digit winning
season in five years. These guys worked for it and they deserve all the credit.” This week the Raptors will travel to Mount Airy to take on the Mount Airy Granite Bears of the Northwest 1A Conference. Going into the game the Raptors look ready and healthy. “It was a big thing for us getting out of the game healthy,” coach Washington said. This will be an interesting match-up since Mount Airy and MI have never met before. The Granite Bears offense averages 353 yards of offense a game. For the most part, Mount Airy is a running team led by 5-foot 9-inch 190 pound senior Johnathan Smith. Smith finished the regular season with 1,886 yards and 28 touchdowns. Mount Airy may be a running team but they can put the ball up if they choose to.
Elijah Burris bulls his way for yards. In 2019 Sophomore quarterback Zeb Stroup passed for 1,029 yards with thirteen touchdowns. Defensively Mount Airy can hold their own. The Granite Bears have shut out their opponents four
times this year. In many ways these two teams are similar. They both have outstanding run games, solid passing attacks, and
strong defenses. This game may boil down which team can stop their opponents rushing attack.

South Point holds off Smoky Mountain for 42-35 win By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
In the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 2AA football playoffs, the South Point Red Raiders had to take the show on the road. The Red Raiders took a 3-hour bus trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains where they faced off against the Smoky Mountain Mustangs of the Mountain 6 2A Conference. In a game that proved to be exciting down to the end, the Red Raiders pulled off an impressive 42-35 win. The Mustangs came into the game boasting a pair of 1,000 yard running backs. There was little doubt they planned to win by pounding the ball. Of course, South Point is no stranger to power running. While the Red Raiders didn’t have the Mustangs stats this year they still had a solid running game of their own. As expected, Smoky Mountain ran the ball, but for their part, the Red Raiders were able to keep pace and then some. At the half, South Point
Devon King gaining yards in the crisp mountain air. took a 21-14 lead into the locker room powered off of touchdown runs by Naseem Jones, Devon King, and Ray Rose. In the third quarter, South Point was able to push further into the lead when Naseem Jones scored his second touchdown of the night followed by a 28-yard Will Rhinehart to Ray Rose touch-

down hookup. Having Rose back in the lineup after being out for several games definitely bolstered the Red Raider offensive attack. “It’s always good to get players back off at the IR,” head coach Adam Hodge said. In his much-anticipated return, Rose made up for the
lost time with 76 yards on the ground and 98 yards receiving. The 6-foot-two inch senior also scored two touchdowns. “He played well,” Hodge said of Rose. After Big Red’s last score it was looking like South Point was going to be able to cruise to a win. However, it didn’t quite go down that way. While the Mustangs may have been down 35-14 they were far from beaten.
Smoky Mountain regrouped and pushed back going on a 14-point scoring binge. The first score came when Mustangs were able to punch in another rushing touchdown at the end of the third quarter to cut the South Point lead to 35-21. In the fourth quarter, Smoky Mountain struck again, this time with a punt return for a touchdown. The back to back Smoky Mountain scores did real
damage. The pace of the game was beginning to shift to the surging Mustangs. South Point still led 35-28 but the lead was shrinking. Things were looking a bit shaky. Were the Red Raiders going to blow it? That question was soon answered when Devon King showed that the Red Raiders were still in the fight when he scored off of a five yard See SOUTH POINT, Page 17

the clock and were able to stymie the Mustangs just enough to keep the lead until the clock ran out. This was a big win for the Red Raiders, but this one almost got away. A first-round playoff win in the road is great, but coach Hodge still wants to see his squad play smart football. “I thought we played hard,” coach Hodge said. “But we made a lot of mental mistakes. If we want to go deeper in the playoffs we have to eliminate ourselves as an opponent.”
SOUTH POINT From Page 16 touchdown run to put the Red Raiders up 42-28. After King’s TD, the Mustangs went back to work and soon scored their third TD of the half. In the closing seconds, the Mustangs trailed 42-35. At this point, time soon became South Point’s biggest ally. While the Mustangs were in the middle of a heck of a comeback, in the end, they ran out of time and fell short. The Red Raiders worked
Statistically, the Red Raiders had a solid game. The South Point offense generated 326 yards of total offense with 101 yards of it coming through the air and 225 of it coming from the ground game. Devon King was the Raiders top rusher with 86 yards off of 12 carries. Will Rinehart had a great day under center going six for eight for 101 yards and a touchdown. In the kicking duties, Carson Smith was flawless. The junior kicker hit six consecutive extra points. This week the Red Raiders will travel to Lincoln
County for the second round of the playoffs where they will battle the 8-3 West Lincoln Rebels of the Southfork 2A Conference. Last week, in first-round playoff action the Rebels beat Ashe County 48-6. West Lincoln is a team that likes to keep it on the ground. Look for the Rebels to feed the ball to Cannon Bridges and Xander Pendergrass. Bridges goes into the game having run for 2,053 yards and 30 touchdowns this year, while Pendegrass has 1,252 yards and 15 touchdowns. South Point QB Will Rhinehart lets go a pass.
