Wesley Ashe of Catawba Heights loved his time in the U.S. Navy By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
During his decade of service in the U.S. Navy, Catawba Heights native Wesley Ashe, 78, not only sailed the globe and visited a wide variety of ports, he had fun doing it. Ashe was just 19-yearsold when he signed up. “I was bumming around the country in October, 1960 and was in Pensacola, Florida when I saw a Navy recruiting poster in the post office,” Ashe said. “I signed up and was sworn in at Birmingham, Alabama.”
The Navy wasted little time in making a sailorman out of Ashe. He was trained to become a commissary man or a cook. “They sent me to the Great Lakes Training Center,” he said. “Soon I was on the heavy cruiser USS Los Angeles.” Ashe’s next assignment saw him on the aviation gas and oil ship the USS Genesee heading for the Philippines. After that, he was on an ammunition ship, the USS Pyro (as in pyrotechnics). The ship hauled so much ammo that it received a citation from the Secretary of the Navy.
Having survived that perilous assignment, Ashe moved on to the destroyer USS Meredith. Next up in his career was a stint at the Mine Defense Lab in Panama City, Florida. “I spent eight years at sea before I got my first shore duty,” he said. But the Navy had one more ship for Ashe, the USS Glennon. “It was a destroyer based in Mayport, Florida,” he said. Having served on board so many ships, you would rightfully surmise that Ashe covered a lot of ocean and tied up in a lot of ports.
Local aerialist Becca Harwell is building a career out of turning upside down By Alan Hodge
Wesley Ashe of Catawba Heights when he was a 19-year-old U.S. Navy sailor. “My favorite place was the Philippines,” he said. “The people there were very friendly. I had a favorite restaurant I used to go to. It was owned by a Chinese lady named Susan Cho.” See ASHE, Page 3 Ashe looking over some of his Navy documents last week.

When Mt. Island resident Becca Harwell, 29, is at her job she spends a lot of time upside down- not from stress but hanging gracefully and happily from long, silky, ropes called aerial silks. In fact, she loves it so much she’s carving herself a career out of what she says is a wonderful way to get in shape and do something unique. Harwell’s Aerial Arts studio in Belmont is where the action takes place. “It’s a great way to build up strength and encourage flexibility,” Harwell says. “It is a unique, creative outlet for your mind and body. It builds self confidence for every age and body type.” Folks at the recent Belmont Boo Fest in Stowe Park got a chance to see Harwell and associate Sara Caldwell climbing and contorting on 23-feet-long silks. Several park improvements in Cramerton and Belmont have occurred recently, and last Saturday saw two ribbon cutting ceremonies take place to celebrate that fact. In Cramerton, folks gathered in the chilly morning at Goat Island Park to see the ribbon cutting and official opening of the River Link Greenway. Memories of WWII were still fresh in the memories of the Philippine people. “When I was there in 1962 people still had pictures of General MacArthur in their houses,” said Ashe. “I went to the U.S. Military Cemetery in Manila and saw those seventeen thousand white crosses,” he said, “It was a humbling experience.” Ashe also recalled plenty of fun in the Philippines. “You could get a glass of rum for a quarter,” He said. “One time I had gotten a lot of back pay. I went on shore with a suitcase full of money and went in a bar and told everyone that Santa Claus had arrived.” Some ports Ashe recalled less favorably. “Puerto Rico was the worst,” he said. “They would steal the pennies off a dead man’s eyes.” Other places Ashe saw included Malta, Crete, Japan, Virgin Islands, Greece, Italy,

loved every minute of it. “The Navy was a good life!” he said.
Mt. Holly Historical Society to present Veterans Day program Ashe and former Pyro shipmate Larry Patrick recently met up in Oklahoma. Spain, and lots more. Another adventure Ashe had was when a ship he was serving on anchored offshore during a calm. “We went swimming in the ocean while guys with rifles watched for sharks,” he said. The Navy taught Ashe the value of camaraderie. “Whatever ship I was on, if you fought one of us, you had to fight us all,” he said. Ashe still keeps in touch with several former shipmates- Willie Agee from Alabama, Richard Iverson from California, and Larry Patrick
from Oklahoma. “I just took a trip to Oklahoma to see Larry,” Ashe said. Another good thing came Ashe’s way while he was in the Navy. He met and married his wife Eldine. “I saw her picture on her brother’s locker when we were on the ship in the Philippines,” Ashe said. “We started writing letters. I met her at her home in Church Point, Louisiana. Two weeks later, January 1966, we were married. She turned nineteen in March, 1966.” Overall, Ashe’s continual

AERIALIST From Page 1 up,” she said. “My gym instructor in Athens suggested I try aerial so I started taking classes when I moved to Charlotte and loved it.” Watching Harwell perform, the resemblance to a circus act is obvious. “I am inspired by Cirque du Soleil,” she said. “I follow circus performers on Instagram.” After Harwell became proficient at aerial, she decided to spread the word and the knowledge through AerialArts. “You don’t need to be an athlete to do it,” she said. “It’s accessible to anyone. My classes have students ranging from parent and tot to one that’s 64-years-old.” There is a learning curve from standing on the ground to swinging from Lycra
ropes. “We start very, very slowly,” she said. “The first level begins with the student sitting on a big knot in the silk and building up endurance. That takes about eight months. The next level has them learning foot locks, climbing, and inverting.” After students learn the aerial ropes, literally, they can do it just for fun, exercise, or even take part in the aerial version of recitals. Next year Harwell hopes to expand her aerial offering with trapeze lessons. “We won’t be swinging,” she said. “The trapeze will be static.” Interested in getting yourself in better shape and having some thrills at the same? Tri-County Animal Rescue:
Pet of the Week Tri-County Animal Rescue has a Labrador Retriever mix named Maxie as our Pet of the Week. Maxie is just over a year old. She is sweet as pie and loves to be with her person. She walks good on a leash, is crate trained, loves everyone she meets, good with kids, good with all other dogs and cats. Maxie has a beautiful short hair coat of black and white. Grooming is a bath and towel dry. Maxie is spayed, current on vaccines and microchipped. Please come meet this beautiful girl this weekend. The Labrador Retriever is one terrific family dog -- given enough vigorous exercise (preferably including swimming and fetching games) and not just a walk around the block once a day. Too much confinement and not enough exercise can lead to rambunctiousness and destructive chewing. One of the best dogs for children of all ages, Labrador Retrievers are kindly, goodnatured, and take most things in stride. Most Labrador Retrievers are very friendly with everyone, though compared to Golden Retrievers, many Labs are just a bit more conservative with their affections. Also more independent -- though quite biddable and responsive to obedience training, some Labrador Retrievers can have a noticeable stubborn streak. Some have necks like bulls and barely notice tugs on the leash. You must control this breed’s tendency to chew on objects and to mouth your hands -- provide a box filled with toys that he can carry around in his mouth. Please come out to our adoption event this weekend. If you are looking for an addition to your family, please come out and meet our pets this weekend. We have many available pets at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard this Saturday noon to 6 pm. Tri-County Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization serving Lincoln, Gaston and other surrounding counties. We are commit-
Maxie ted to ending pet homelessness in this area and we need your continued support. If you cannot adopt a pet, then support Tri-County in other ways. We need volunteers and donations to continue our mission of finding homes for these unwanted animals. Please help Tri-County Animal Rescue continue to save pets by adopting your next pet this weekend? Our “needs” list includes: towels, Clorox, laundry detergent, paper towels, dry dog food and dry cat food. For more information, call 704.263.2444, send an email to TriCountyAnimalRescue@ yahoo.com, visit us on the web at www.tcar. us or on FaceBook at Tri-County Animal Rescue. Donations can be sent to Tri-County Animal Rescue, PO Box 483, Alexis, NC 28006.

Grant applications for Community Impact Projects in Mt. Holly being accepted The Mount Holly Community Impact Fund is a charitable fund started by the Community Foundation of Gaston County to address identified needs in the Mount Holly community as
determined by a committee of Mount Holly residents. The Fund will operate as an unrestricted fund with grants going to qualified 501 (c) 3 organizations. A major focal point of the
grant process is directed towards projects that would be visible in the Mount Holly community and would have a reasonable likelihood of kick starting a larger community response to a commu-
In everything give thanks! Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church , Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
Can you believe we are in the month of November already? Many people are ready for Christmas trees and the holiday season, yet this is the month of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day will be here before we know it, and this is the time of year when our hearts focus on being thankful. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 reminds us, “In everything give thanks” (NKJV). This season may we remember all of the things God has given us. Matthew 15:32-38 records the miracle of the feeding of the four thousand. Jesus had been teaching near the Sea of Galilee. After three days, Jesus finished teaching and the people prepared to leave. Jesus told His disciples that He did not want to send them away without feeding them first. They had spent so much time listening, that they had not eaten. The disciples wondered where they would find enough food to feed the people there in the wilderness. Jesus asked them what they had there. The disciples had seven little loaves of bread, and a few little fish. Jesus took this small amount of food, and gave thanks to the Father. They began to distribute the food, and there was enough for everyone. There
were even seven baskets of leftovers! There were four thousand men gathered that day, plus women and children. This miracle reminds us so much of the need Rev. Trent Tankin for giving thanks. In the midst of so many people, Jesus gave thanks for the little bit of food they had. In the midst of a world driven by materialism, may we be thankful for what we have. We worry so much about what we need next, a better house, or a newer car, yet God has been so good to us. We have so much already to be thankful for. With our drive for more, have we taken for granted all of the good things God has given us? So many people are in need, homeless, hungry, and lonely. As we gather this season with our families, with large dinners on our tables, in our warm houses decorated for the season, may we never forget that God has provided it all. That day on that Galilean hillside, Jesus held those small loaves and fish is His hands, and gave thanks. He took that small amount of food and fed thousands. Jesus has given us what we have, and He blesses us every day. Take time this season of thanksgiving, and say to Jesus, thank you! Thank you for everything!

nity need that is not currently being met. In regard to the amount of funding available, the Community Impact Fund Committee has at its disposal approximately $12,000. The actual amount for awards can be the entire amount or in increments based upon the application being considered. The deadline for accepting applications is December 16, 2019. Final decisions on
grants awarded will be made by January 15, 2020. For more information regarding the grant application process or other pertinent questions, please contact Mr. Reeves McGlohon, Committee Chairman, at 704-366-3812 or by email at reevesmcglohon@gmail. com. This is the 6th year that the Community Foundation of Gaston County has pro-
vided funding to the Mount Holly community to support projects that will improve the quality of life in our area. Over the years, these funds have provided a kickstart for the Mount Holly Farmers Market, the Mount Holly Community Garden, the Mount Holly River Greenway, and projects associated with the Mount Holly Historical Society.
Gaston County has 14th confirmed rabies case of 2019 On Monday October 28th, 2019 at approximately 9:10 am Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement unit received a call from the 900 block of Toncin Ave. Bessemer City, NC 28016. The call was in reference to a possible rabid animal. A family dog was fighting with a raccoon and the owner stepped in to separate the two animals. The dog owner killed the raccoon that kept advancing on him, but neither the owner nor his dog were scratched or bitten by the raccoon. Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident. The deceased
raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. On Wednesday October 30th, 2019 the raccoon specimen tested positive for rabies. The adult female Labrador on Toncin Ave., Bessemer City, was up to date on her required rabies vaccinations and received a rabies booster shot the following day. Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass in the area of Toncin Ave. Bessemer City, to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area. Gaston County Animal
Care and Enforcement also notified Gaston County Department Health and Human Services to relay case information, so they can complete their regular follow up investigation. The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement unit stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of their owners and community. This represents the fourteenth confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.

Cramerton mayor pro-tem Demetrious Koutsoupias and other dignitaries cut the River Link Greenway ribbon.
PARKS From Page 1
The Greenway is a 10 foot wide, .6 mile asphalt path that terminates with a beautiful wooden boardwalk, observation and seating area overlooking a natural wetland beside the South Fork of the
Catawba River. The greenway extension is another feature in Cramerton’s goal to create places where folks can get outdoors and enjoy nature. In addition to hikers, the trail should
offer plenty of birdwatching opportunities as well as wildflower viewing. Massive trees will provide lots of shade in summer and beautiful foliage in autumn. Cramerton mayor pro-tem Demetrious Koutsoupias cut the ribbon and talked about the Greenway extension. “This is exciting,” he said of the Greenway. “It will eventually connect the downtowns of Cramerton and McAdenville.” He went on to thank several organizations for funding and other contributions including Carolina Thread Trail, Gaston County, Town of Cramerton staff, and the Catawba Lands Conservancy to name a few. Cramerton Parks and Rec. director Erick Smallwood also made remarks. Smallwood related how bad weather had slowed progress on the project, but in the end, the hard work had paid off handsomely. The new playground equipment at Linford Park in all its glory. also took part in a ribbon cutting event at Linford Park on Cason St. in North Belmont last Saturday. The event was a big step towards improving the threeacre site with about $30,000 worth of new playground equipment. The money for the new equipment came from a Meet Me at the Park grant from the Walt Disney Co. and the National Parks and Recreation Association. The city matched the grant funds. Belmont was one of just 25 cities nationwide to re-

ceive one of the grants. Belmont Parks and Rec. director Zip Stowe applied for it. “We are a member of the NPRA and they sent an email about the grant,” Stowe said. “I applied back in January. It was a nice surprise when I found out we had been selected.” The new playground equipment is handicapped accessible. The fact that folks with disabilities will be able to enjoy the new playground unit is important. ‘The equipment has ramps
so that wheelchairs can use it,” said Stowe. “It is the first of its type in Belmont.” Also in Belmont, work continues on improvements to the embankment at Stowe Park on S. Main St. The slope is being landscaped with new steps and a retaining wall made of stone resembling the stonework surrounding the Fighting Yanks WWII monument. At Davis Park, work has been completed repaving the tennis court there. A ribbon cutting event took place last week marking that milestone.

Raptors squash Thomas Jefferson in big 34-7 win By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
The Mountain Island Charter Raptors football team stunned their longtime nemesis the Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Gryphons with a huge 34-7 conference win last week. The win puts the Raptors in a three-way tie for first place in the Southern Piedmont 1A along with Thomas Jefferson and Bessemer City. This victory was big for so many reasons. The biggest may be the fact that MI got the win without two of their starting players on the field. In the end, the rest of the team stood tall and decided that they would carry the load. Mountain Island was the first team to score when Kobe Creamer cut into the end zone on a 10-yard run in the first quarter. Thomas Jefferson countered with a score of their own in the second quarter. That left the game tied up 7-7 at halftime. In a third quarter of the Raptors exploded. Mountain Island pumped out 27 third quarter points. The third quarter scoring frenzy was fueled in part by some awesome special teams play. Jaden Robinson returned a kickoff for a touchdown
and Jay Brandon Jones II returned a punt for a score to get things going. The Mountain Island offense did enough to win the game while the Mountain Island defense severely limited a normally potent Thomas Jefferson offense to less than 200 yards of total offense. Mountain Island ended of the game with 227 yards total offense. Kobe Creamer stepped up at quarterback. Creamer had 35 yards off of seven carries and a touchdown on the ground. In the air, Creamer was 12 or 38 with a touchdown. Raptors top runner was Caleb Patton with seven carries for 82 yards and a touchdown. Patton ended the game with an 11.7 yards-per-carry average. Once again Gabe Stephens had a rock-hard defensive performance. Stephens finished up with 12 tackles including four for a loss. This week the Raptors end the regular season with another conference match up. This time against the Highland Tech Rams. Mountain Island’s best
Ron Foulk tries out the jungle gym at Linford Park. shot at a share of the conference title comes with a win over the Rams. The Gryphons, Raptors, and Yellowjackets are tied in a dead heat for the conference title with matching 6-1 records and one more conference game to go. Who wins the conference will come down to a simple, but slightly confusing scenario. If all three teams lose this week we have a three way tie. If all three teams win you have a three-way tie. The final possible outcome involves one of the three winning and one of the three losing. In a nutshell, if you lose nd the other guy wins you’re out. Still confused? No one can blame you. Let’s see what happens this week and it will all get sorted out.

This was the third year for the LGA breast cancer event which began when an LGA member witnessed the amazing positive impact that Kim and “The Woman in Pink” had on her daughter as she faced breast cancer. Because so many other LGA members had either experienced breast cancer first hand or through their loved ones, the LGA committed itself to support “The Woman in Pink” with the “Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer” charitable event at Cramer Mountain
Club. With 100% of the donations going to “The Woman in Pink,” over the last three years, the CMC LGA has successfully raised more than $20,000!! The fun-filled “Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer” event took place at Cramer Mountain Club on September 21. It was a beautiful fall day with golf and tennis clinics, Closest to the Pin and Putt-putt Challenges, Raffle, and The Woman in Pink Boutique. New this year was an “In Memory or In Honor Hill” to recognize both breast cancer survivors and lost warriors. The event would not have been possible without wonderful support and hard work of many. For that reason, the LGA thanks all who contributed to the success of “Take a Swing at Breast Cancer”
including our hole sponsors (many of them CMC members), raffle donors, clinic and challenge participants, In Memory/In Honor of sponsors, CMC members, donors, and friends. Special thanks Rick and Pat Stillwell of Cardinal Graphics for creating and donating all of the signs for the event; to LTA for joining the quest; to the MGA for donating prize money; to our CMC Golf and Tennis Pros, Jon Meyers and Hank Advants, for donating their time for clinics; and to the CMC Pro Shop and Golf Course staff for all of their help in making the event a success. The LGA will be back again next year with our “Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer” event as “Breast Cancer does not rest, so neither will we”!!

Warriors win! By John Wilson John.bannernews@gmail.com
Last Friday night the East Gaston Warriors football team notched their first win of the year by beating the Community School of Davidson Spartans 47-14. You have to go back to October of 2017 when the Warriors beat Chase 13-6 to find the last time EG won a game. This one was a long time coming. When East Gaston hired Jason Lippard in the offseason it has understood that there was a need for change. That change would not come easy, it would take time. “In our program, we want to instill a work ethic,” Lippard said earlier this year. “A blue-collar physical approach with discipline.” All year the Warriors have struggled as the team rebuilt. Friday’s win gives everybody a chance to take a breath. Even if it’s just for a moment. At East Gaston,
the future is looking a little brighter. As soon as the game got underway it was obvious that the Warriors came to play. The Warriors scored 27 unanswered first-half points. Twenty of those points came in the first quarter, while an additional seven came in the second. EG went into halftime up 27-0. All evening the Warriors offense played well. East Gaston was able to establish a strong run game that contributed 312 yards out of 365 yards of total offense. EG’s top back was Justin Hill who had 11 carries for 137 yards and a touchdown. However, as well as Hill played, he wasn’t the only running back to contribute. All evening East Gaston spread the ball around a lot. In addition to Hill, four other Warrior runners found their way into the end zone. Jake Thomas, Mason Price, KJ Dagout, Jaxon Cogdill, and Nehemiah Stovall all
scored rushing touchdowns. Defensively the Warriors held the line. When the Spartans tried to throw the ball EG defenders snatched it out of the sky. East Gaston finished the game with five interceptions. Three were pulled down by KJ Dagout. All year the Warriors have struggled as the team remade itself. The going has been tough but the players are staying committed. Hopefully, the win over the Spartans will be something the team can build on. Friday’s win gives everybody a chance to say that the future is looking a little brighter. Next week the 1-9 Warriors travel to Forest City to take on the winless East Rutherford Cavaliers in the final game of the year. If EG can pull out a win they will end the year on a two-game win streak. That’s something the Warriors should push hard for.

Remembering Our Veterans The men and women who defend the liberties and freedoms of the countries they represent hold a special place in people’s hearts and an eternal spot in their countries’ histories. Any opportunity is a good time to commemorate the bravery and selfless deeds of military personnel, but certain prominent holidays in November make this an especially important time to thank veterans for their service. November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s also known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world. These holidays honor all military veterans who have provided service to their countries, and that each falls on November 11 is no coincidence, as the day commemorates the anniversary of the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Many places around the world pause and remember fallen veterans on November 11, but a good majority of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day commemorative events focus on past and current veterans who are still alive. There are many ways to honor the military at home and abroad in time for the November festivities. The following are just a handful of ways to show appreciation for military men and women. • When dining out, ask your server if you can pay the tab for a soldier or veteran you see in the restaurant. • Attend a military parade with your family and explain the significance of the day to children in attendance. • Draft letters and send care packages to soldiers currently in service far away from home. • Ask your company if Veterans Day or Remembrance Day can be an observed holiday at your place of business each year to pay homage to servicemen and women. • Visit a military memorial in a city near you. Your town also may have its own memorial. • Petition town officials to erect a memorial if your town does not already have one. Such memorials can be a source of inspiration for your community. • Support a military family in your town who may be missing a loved one stationed elsewhere. Make meals, mow the lawn, help with grocery shopping, or simply provide emotional support. • Volunteer time at a veterans’ hospital. You may be able to read with veterans or engage in other activities. • Get involved with a military support charity that can provide much-needed funds to struggling families or disabled veterans. • Have children speak with veterans in your family, including grandparents, uncles and aunts or even their own parents. It can help them gain perspective on the important roles the military plays. • Ask a veteran to give a commencement speech at a school or to be the guest of honor at a special function. • Drive disabled veterans to doctors’ appointments or to run any errands. • Support a local VFW organization. • Create a scrapbook for a veteran in your life. • Cheer for or thank military personnel each time you see them. • Visit the veterans’ portion of a nearby cemetery and place poppies or other flowers on the graves. • Always keep the military on your mind and never forget those who have served and didn’t return home. Armistice Day, Remembrance Day and Veterans Day are great ways to honor past and current military for their service and sacrifice.
