Model trains are the new theme at Belmont Historical Museum By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Ever since Belmont was founded as a watering stop on the Charlotte and Atlanta Railroad back in 1872, trains have always been a
big part of the town’s past. Now, the newest displays at the Belmont Historical Society Museum are honoring that heritage with exhibits featuring classic model trains.
The train displays are set up in several locations inside the museum and there’s even a set of model tracks that will have trains in action on a scale layout. See TRAINS, Page 5
During the recent Grazie Mille Gala, Regina Moody Holy Angels President/CEO, presented the Legacy of Love award to Dr. Steve and Suzy Hannon. Suzy and Steve Hannon, who are parents and grandparents, are known around Gaston County as the dynamic duo, brought the idea of an Italian fundraising event to Holy Angels 10 years ago. During a trip to Italy they met Mimma Ferrando and Franca Gatteschi, two sisters who offered cooking experiences in their homes. They invited the two Italian mamas from Chianti, Italy to help support Holy Angels through an Italian fundraising event now knows as a Grazie Mille (a 1000 thanks) Gala. According to Moody, “This year we are celebrating Suzy and Steve not only for what they brought to Holy
Angels through the Grazie Mille event but also for what they have done for the past 35 years. I think their legacy is that of love, care, compassion and mercy. Their impact on Holy Angels encompasses their love, care, generous hearts, and advocacy. They dream big, seeing many possibilities for Holy Angels and the people served there. For over 35 years they have been faithful supporters of the mission and ministry, sharing Holy Angels’ Suzy and Dr. Steve Hannon story with family and friends. power that if you can impact Their son, Justin Hannon, said this about his parents: one person the ripple effect “They both have huge hearts. that can happen. I think they have seen the See HOLY ANGELS, Page 4

TODAY’S QUOTE:
“Humility is to make a right estimate of one’s self.” - Charles Spurgeon
Rodents are a riot
My mother and Italian love knot cookies
Well it’s that time of year when creatures great and small look for a nice cozy spot out of the cold and dreary weather. Rodents are especially prone to casting their beady eyes at places to hole up and your dwelling or even your vehicle is to them a five-star hotel. Read on and you will see what I mean. Rodent Tale #1 Last week, Sharon sent me an email saying that whilst driving to work she heard a thunk under the dashboard of her car and then a terrible vibration from the heater fan. OK, so I went to the bank and got the keys and turned on the ignition and fan and sure enough there was a loud rattling coming from that area. I called my cousin John Clayton who is a wizard mechanic and he happened to be near by and he came and heard it and scratched his head. With visions of taking the car to the dealer and having them tear the dash out and charging me $1K, I came back to the office and googled “vibration in heater fan 2017 Toyota 4Runner”. Well, to cut to the chase I watched a YouTube video that showed how to remove the little cover in the glove box and get to the heater fan. I went back to the bank parking lot and did so whereupon the mystery was solved.....a rat in the heater fan! Freshly dead from centrifugal force. I could not get my hand in the fan to get him but the next morning I made a tool from coat hanger wire and fished the corpse out... thankfully before it had started stinking. Rodent Tale #2 I have a nice bird house on a big poplar tree by the edge of our woods. However, I had not seen a bird go in or out at all this summer so I decided to move it to another location. So I took my cordless drill and strolled over to the tree and stood right in front of the birdhouse and put the drill bit on the screw and pulled the trigger. No sooner had the drill turned one rev than a flying squirrel came out of the birdhouse hole like a torpedo nearly hitting my lips and I stumbled back in sudden
Growing up Italian across the river from New York City, I learned the importance of family traditions. Christmas was extra special when it came to customs that started with my grandparents in Italy. Christmas Eve was a meatless meal with spaghetti and fish served instead of meatballs and sausage. Christmas Day was, and still is lasagna. If you come to my house on Christmas day, there will not be a turkey as in the Chevy Chase Christmas movie. Cookies are a huge part of my Italian tradition. I’m not sure if the toll house cookies were made in Italy, but my mother was great at making them. When I was a kid, every Christmas morning, my Uncle Tony and Aunt Betty came to our house. My uncle commented that my mother’s cookies were taller than his wife’s cookies. He asked my mother what she used. Her reply was Crisco. My aunt used butter. The next year I heard the same conversation. Each year I waited for the question to be asked and the comparison between Crisco and butter. There were also the butter cookies. They were the reason I gained 10 pounds over Christmas. As much as I love the chocolate in the toll house cookies, my mother’s but-
My Opinion: shock and fear and hit the ground and he ran off into the weeds. Well, after I got up and composed myself Hodge I headed to the garage Alan Banner-News Editor and glimpsing over my shoulder I saw the little devil going back in the birdhouse with a look on his face like “can’t a person get some sleep around here?” Rodent Tale #3 Not long after the flying squirrel episode I “done seen” Chippy the Chipmunk darting in and out of my garage through a hole at the bottom of the door. I don’t know why rodents find motorcycles so fascinating but last summer a pack of mice decided to make a nest in one of the saddlebags of the Honda cruiser bike. Maybe they wanted to go for a ride. I had to put mothballs in the bag to keep those varmints out. But back to Chippy. Well, I spotted Chippy over the course of the next few days continuing to go in and out of the building. Chippy’s cheeks were bulging with acorns and I knew he was hiding them somewhere inside. But where? I got my answer when I cranked the Honda up and a shower of nuts came out of the muffler. After the engine ran a while and the pipes heated up, the aroma of freshly toasted acorns came wafting out. Bad Chippy! Well, since Sharon and I live in a log house surrounded by woods these are but a few of the many rodent run-ins we have had over the years, each one a new adventure and aggravation. I left out one in particular where a squirrel got in the attic and fell down behind the wall and died and smelled horrible and we had to cut a hole in the sheetrock to pull his body out. All I can say is “Mickey Mouse Go Home!” but not our home- and hopefully not yours either.
ter cookies were to die for. My mother always baked the cookies a week before Christmas. They were stored in the spare room next to my sister’s room. One year, my sister ate almost all the butter cookies. When my mother took them out on Christmas Eve, there were only a few left. Besides toll house cookies, my mother made Italian love knot cookies. She would roll the dough into a long roll (think of a log) and tie them into a knot. After they came out of the oven, they were covered with a sugary frosting. If you wanted to make it extra special, you added food coloring to it so the frosting went from white to red or green. That made it very festive. When you ate them, you didn’t just eat them; you dunked them in coffee. That softened them and made them more enjoyable. There was a reason you had to dunk it in coffee. Can I confess something to you. I don’t think I ever liked them. They weren’t very good. They crumbled. In fact, I would never buy them. But I ate them because they were made with love that came from the sacrifice of her hands but more importantly, my mother’s heart. However, my father loved them. He didn’t eat the toll house cookies. He didn’t eat
the butter cookies. He ate the Tony Marciano Italian love knot cookies. I can still see him dunking them in a cup of coffee and enjoying them. Maybe my mother’s Italian love knot cookies is similar to how you look at Christmas – it’s either an Italian love knot cookie that you ate because Christmas is a cultural tradition or an Italian love knot cookie because Christmas is the real thing. Either way, is Christmas just a story, or it is the time we celebrate Immanuel, God with us? Just like my father and I both looked at the Italian love knot cookies differently, it’s so easy for you and me to look at Christmas differently. I like cookies that are buttery and loaded with chocolate. Perhaps my great grandparents had it right. There is more to a cookie than chocolate or butter. There is more to a holiday than trimming trees, attending parties and exchanging gifts. It’s the reality of God’s love that we celebrate in the birth of Jesus. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend.
Santa comes as an eight-year-old By Allison Bansen There is something about the holidays that brings out the best in people. I don’t know if it’s the sugar high or the gift of giving that puts people in the mood to be nice, but I like it. My kids love Santa, in fact we have a few Santas that roam around Belmont all year long. The parades, holiday school lunches and shopping. It really is a fun time of year. No wonder kids love it. Adults do too! Santa, also known as St. Nick historically, is known as a protector of children. He was born circa 280 AD in what is now Turkey and it has been told that he gave away all his fortune helping the poor and weary. His death was on December 6, 343AD, which is considered a good day for Amazon shopping because it’s apparently lucky and a lot of people make large purchases on this day or have special events. Hint, hint gents it’s a good time to propose. This year we decided to do something a little different with our oldest child. We

They’ve run a system through my back yard By Shelton Fisher
Restlessness befell the Fisher household a couple weeks ago and Well, it’s part of a system rather. there wasn’t much to do that sounded It also technically isn’t exactly in worth doing. up our shoes and hit the trail! It seems a little weird parking your car at the end of a cul-de-sac. I’m sure that the people who live in the neighborhood know that people are going to walk, but along the way Kimberly and I were going back and forth about how that neighborhood would have connection to anything else on the trail. As we walked, we kept pace with the South Fork River as it continuously flowed along with nothing else to do. We walked further up and found areas where we could get near the water and went up onto the rocks to peer into the streams as they peacefully rolled along, filing the stones down unbeknownst to us. Leaves of every color, shape, and size had fallen to the ground as we followed along the trail and we wondered which tree dropped which leaf and how could any tree produce such massive leaves, as some were as big as my head. We came to a point where there were stone monuments left from what I could only assume to be textiles past. Large gray stones were stacked on top of one another until they created a small structure. There were several of them and they looked as though they could either form a bridge or support turbines, but either way they stood firm through the tests of time. The trail kept winding and I had a feeling
that I knew where we were going to end up. We came to an old railway bridge that we had to walk under to continue along and I couldn’t help but think that it couldn’t be much further to the end. We began to hear the rumble of cars and trucks as we approached I-85. To get to the end for us meant walking under the interstate above us. It made for a nice change of pace and an interesting point of view for sure as we continued along and finally reached our goal not too long after the hustle and bustle. The trail ends (or begins depending on which end you start at) in a parking lot behind the Pharr YMCA in McAdenville. To get to this parking lot, I believe that you go down Dickson Road and follow it to get to the trail access (I’m not crystal clear on that, as I have never parked there to walk the trail). To celebrate the triumph of our journey, we walked down to The Spruced Goose for coffee and to sit down for a second before venturing back into the woods. The trail made for a perfect use of a Saturday other than just sitting around the house and got us to plug into a network that’s completely different than the normal day to day thing. The Carolina Thread Trail is an ongoing initiative and if you would like more information, visit www. carolinathreadtrail.com.

year officers went to 92 property damage collisions with 11 injuries on I-85 South and 65 property damage collisions with 14 injuries on I-85 North. Belmont officers also handled hundreds of crimes against property calls including 373 larcenies, 90 vandalisms, 96 frauds, and 18 vehicle thefts to name a few. Stemming vice and narcotics in Belmont occupied a good deal of the Belmont PD’s time in 2019. Officers made 109 felony drug arrests. Officers seized 1,034 grams of cocaine, 8,146.6 grams of meth, 87 grams of heroin, 10,264 grams od “schrooms”, 150 doses of LSD, and 9,000 milliliters of DMT. Ten firearms were also seized. The Belmont PD held numerous training sessions in 2019. These subjects included crisis intervention, racial intelligence, tactical seat belt, body cam, stop sticks, rapid deployment/active shooter, customer service, dangerous crossroads, disability awareness, collision avoidance, TASER, intoximeter, and verbal judo. All Belmont PD supervisors completed leadership and risk training, numerous officers earned Advanced and Intermediate certificates. In addition, Belmont PD completely updated its policy manual and forms system, implemented special Internal Affairs software, and held/ worked 32 special events including National Night Out, Cop on Top, Citizens Police Academy, and Back to School Bash. Belmont city manager Adrian Miller complimented the PD on its dedication and hard work. “Chief Chad Hawkins and his department have done a fantastic job this year to engage with our community to make Belmont a safe place to live and work,” Miller said. “Our officers are pa-
trolling the city, its parks, and its downtown to ensure that people are safe. They have worked on solutions to the long-time problem of speeding on Julia Avenue that required community collaboration, have worked with NCDOT to reduce high-speed collisions on I-85 in Belmont, and worked with the federal drug task force to remove illegal drugs from our streets. The officers and command staff have engaged our community in numerous ways to form better relationships with our residents and business owners. Our police department is fully staffed with a diverse group of professionals that have been trained in the best practices for policing. In an era where policing is not always popular and agencies are having a hard time attracting applicants to become police officers, the Belmont police department has been able to attract talented professionals to fill its ranks and has been able to retain its talented professionals. This is in stark contrast to our officer shortage from a few years ago. This is a testament to the
leadership and culture that Chief Hawkins has brought to our department and to the resources that the mayor and city council have invested in our department. I could not be prouder of the work of all of our police department staff. I am excited for them to go through the CALEA accreditation process that will show just how far they have come over the past several years.” City council member Ryan Schrift also praised the Belmont PD for their work. “This is the best shape our Police Department has been in for years,” he said. “They have aggressively updated old policies, increased training, and have received numerous accreditations holding their department to the highest standards. All of this is in an effort to increase public safety as well as the safety of our officers. The department has come along way and they now have the right team at the right time to build on these best practices and to use analytics to challenge themselves and build a culture of continuous improvement.”

Belmont FD Holiday Safety Tips Belmont Fire Department wants everyone to remain safe and have an enjoyable Holiday Season. It is our mission to protect lives and property and promote safety throughout the year, but wish to make everyone aware of the seasonal safety hazards that accompany the Holidays. Test your smoke alarms by pushing the test button prior to the season and when entertaining make guest aware of your home evacuation plan. We hope the following tips will help everyone remain safe and have a wonderful holiday season. Christmas Tree Safety When picking out a tree pick one that is fresh with green needles that do not fall off when touched. Keep the tree at least three feet away from heat sources (fireplace, radiators, candles, heating
vents or lights). Make sure the tree does not impede exits or exit routes. Use light strands that are labeled by a testing laboratory such as UL. Replace strands with worn or broken cords. Never use candles to decorate the tree. Always turn off the lights on the tree when you leave the home or go to bed. Water the tree daily to try to keep it as fresh as possible. Twenty five percent of all Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems. Twenty five percent of Christmas tree fires are caused by the tree being too close to a heating source. Christmas Decorations Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. If you choose to use candles keep a distance of three feet away between them and other flammables. Be sure to use lights that are
Gaston County has sixteenth confirmed rabies case of 2019 On Sunday November 29, 2019 at approximately 10:30am Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement received a call from 100 block of Z.A. Hunter Road Bessemer City, NC 28016. The call was in reference to a possible rabid animal. A family dog killed a skunk. Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident. The deceased skunk was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. On Monday December 3, 2019 the skunk specimen tested positive for rabies. Unfortunately the dog did not have the required rabies vaccinations and was euthanized. Civil citations were
issued for failure to rabies vaccinate an animal and failure to purchase county tags. Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass in the area of Z.A. Hunter Road Bessemer City, NC to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area. The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement unit stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of animal owners and community. This represents the sixteenth confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.

Turn off all lights and extinguish all candles before going to bed or leaving the home. Keep children and pets away from lit candles. More than forty percent of home decorations fire are caused by decorations being placed too close to heat sources. More than one third of home decorations fire are started by candles Holiday Cooking The three peak days for cooking fires inside the home are Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. Stay in the kitchen when cooking to keep an eye on things on the stove top. When cooking things that take a long time to cook such as a turkey never leave the home while they are cooking. Keep children at least three feet away from the stove when using cooking. Sample hot dishes or drinks before giving them to children to assure that they will not be burnt while enjoying these treats. Keep all knives out of reach of children. Turkey fryers can easily tip over, use only on level sturdy areas. An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is put in. Determine the correct cooking oil level by placing the turkey in the pot with water in it prior to using the oil. Be certain turkey is fully thawed before putting it in the oil. A frozen turkey will cause the hot oil to splatter. Check the oil temperature often to assure the oil will not overheat and start a fire. Use gloves to protect hands and arms. The pot, lid and handle can get dangerously hot.

Seeking Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
Have you ever had a chance to explore land, or maybe walk through an old abandoned house? It is neat to explore things, find new routes, or even take new journeys. Life can be like a great journey and exploration for many people. Some people spend their entire lives on a journey seeking something, hoping to find what they are looking for, while often not knowing what that might be. Matthew 2:1-12 tells of a journey three men took that first Christmas. We know these men as the wise men, or magi. These men were from some far away eastern land, perhaps Persia, or another such place. They followed the stars, and understood ancient prophecy. They knew a King was to be born in Bethlehem, and journeyed to find Him. When they finally arrived, they sought the Child. King Herod heard of this, and demanded to know where this Child would be born. After talking with his advisers, he called the wise men before him. He wanted them to find the Child, and bring him word where He was. He wanted to kill the Child. The wise men followed the star they had seen, which brought them to Jesus. They entered the house, fell down and worshiped Him. They presented
to Him their gifts, gold, frankincense, and myrrh. God warned them to avoid Herod, and they went home another way. The wise men were Rev. Trent Tankin seeking something, Jesus. Many people seek something today. This may be hope, peace, or something else lacking in their life. What is it that you are looking for? There is one thing for sure, that day the wise men found Jesus, they were never the same again. When our journey brings us to the cross of Jesus, we will know radical change through Him. We will never be what we were before, or want to be those things any more. The awesome part is, we do not have to journey far to find Jesus. The wise men probably spent many weeks traveling to Jesus. Jesus came to us that first Christmas. If we seek Him, we will find Him. This Christmas you may be on a journey, seeking fulfillment in your life. You may not know what it is you need. However, if you seek Jesus, He will be there for you. What is keeping you from making the journey to Jesus today? Find what your heart needs in Jesus Christ. Christmas is for you. Jesus journeyed from heaven to earth for you. Know Him today!
Gaston Museum holiday events The Gaston Museum of History, located in Dallas, has some interesting events for the holiday season. On view for the first time, the Museum presents the Winter Wonderland exhibit highlighting the recent donation of Rauch Industry’s historic satin-wrapped Christmas ornaments that have decorated homes in Gaston County and throughout the world since the 1960’s. Created and patented by Marshall Rauch, the satin-wrapped Christmas ornaments display a tradition that spanned four decades of production in Gastonia. Select ornaments from Rauch’s collection will be on display in the Gathering Room through December. Also, help the Gaston Museum celebrate the holiday season at the annual Holiday Open House on Friday, Dec. 13 from 4-6pm. Enjoy cookies, warm cider, and a visit with St. Nicholas. The Museum Store will be open with great gift ideas for everyone on your holiday list.
Thirteen members of the Mount Holly Police Department are participating in “No Shave November/December” this year. Each Officer participating made a donation of $60 and the proceeds in November will be donated to the American Cancer Society of Gaston County. The proceeds in December will be used to adopt a family for Christmas. Here’s Deputy Chief Reagan and Sgt. Terry sporting their whiskers. Photo by Alan Hodge

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
Steer wisely Remembrances are sometimes triggered by smells or scenery. Recently, driving in N.C., I had a flashback of driving toward the beach in Florida. This morning, sitting quietly on my deck, I had a sailing experience flashback. Five of us took a 26 ft. sailboat out on a Texas lake on a bright, sunny, hot day. Our boat was languishing lazily in a gentle wind so all but one of us decided to toss a 50 ft. tow rope off the stern to jump overboard, cool off and have fun. We did and were until the wind kicked up and our shipmate on board was doing everything to steer the boat; she didn’t have two extra hands to let the sail down. The four of us, in the water, were working hard to hang onto the rope. The water pressure against us was amazingly strong. We had to work hard to get back aboard and manage the sails. Steering a boat is vitally important to keep it from running aground and managing its destination and the rudder and the sail both impact speed. Spiritually God is steering me right now to two associated lessons. First: how we often we don’t steer our own lives productively and second: how we often steer our tongue harmfully. Levi Lusko, in “If You Say So,” notes that God “spoke the world to life… and Jesus into our world.” And “That tells us something about the weight of words.” If we consider the scale and wonder of creation we must agree. Creation wasn’t a fanciful God idea but deliberate. And because song is a more comprehensive reflection of our heart than speaking is, I imagine God sang into creation to fully express His joyful heart and direct the diverse parts. Yesterday our pastor taught how the condition of our hearts and our reliance on God’s
Your best Christmas gift? By Dr. Glenn Mollette
Holy Spirit determines how we use our tongue. Pray to God’s HS, fast, soak ourselves in God’s word and look for ways to tear ourselves from overabundant self-cen- Dennis Siracusa teredness while speaking affirming life into others. And surely we know this doesn’t happen by accident! We must train ourselves and let Jesus condition our tongues through our familiarity with His Word. He’ll tell us how to use our tongues by speaking to our soul, and in so doing will direct our paths. And speaking of paths, don’t accept life as it unravels, discover and reach for our unique calling through spoken prayer. Scripture says if you have a need or desire ask for it and Jesus will give us the desire of our hearts. Likewise Luke 11:9 TPT teaches “… Ask and you’ll receive. Seek and you’ll discover. Knock on heaven’s door, and it will one day open for you.” All the while be careful of motives and be persistent. Don’t “ask” by merely thinking it. Pray out loud! Similarly don’t invite Jesus to be Lord by quietly wishing or thinking it. Voice it. Romans 10:10 NIV “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” And end with a humble spoken Amen which means “let it be,” or as Lusko notes, “May what I have prayed come to pass.” And with Christmas upon us, let the holiday sights, sounds, and smells remind us of Jesus’ great love for us. As we celebrate His miraculous earthly birth, let’s celebrate His whole life, lessons, sacrifice and incomparable eternal plan.

The average American will spend $920 on Christmas gifts this year reaching a total of more than $1 trillion in holiday spending. Eight percent said they would spend nothing, and three percent said they were unsure. Twenty-nine percent expected their gift spending to be between $100 and $499 according to stats from Investopedia. In 2001, the average American planned to spend $1,052 - the highest ever. Following the financial crash in 2008, planned holiday shopping dropped to $417 in 2009 - less than half of what people planned to spend in 2018 according to the National Retail Federation. Americans have been spending more on holiday gifts every year since 2008 (except 2012); although the holiday spending is still not back on the prerecession trend, it seems to be headed in that direction - possibly thanks to lower unemployment, stronger growth, and

In the early going Cramer shows they have talent By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
Four games into the 201920 basketball season and the Stuart Cramer Storm are 2-2. This year’s team is showing that they may just have the talent to make things happen. The key will be seeing what they do with that talent. Cramer opened the season with a pair of wins. The first was a 68-54 win over East Gaston and then a 72-43 thumping of Chase. After those wins, the Storm took on a couple of South Carolina teams from Weddington and York. Cramer lost to York 73-58 and then lost 87-62 to the Weddington Warriors. In the East Gaston game, there was plenty of production across the board as Tyrese Jeffries, Will Kelly, Brenton Elliott, Luke Todd, and Bryce Lee all put up double-digit scoring efforts. Brenton Elliott also did a good job under the boards pulling down 10 rebounds against the Warriors. In the Chase game, Will Kelly broke loose with 29 points and seven rebounds. When Cramer faced off against the York Cougars they started strong but faltered in the second half. The game was close all the way into the fourth period. Then York went on a 23-11 scoring run that pretty much put the game out of reach for the Storm. When Cramer hit the court against Weddington, the Warriors came out swinging and were able to fight the Storm off for most of the game. Will Kelly was the Storm’s top scorers against York with 20 points, while Brenton Elliott topped the list for Cramer with 18 points against Weddington. It’s early but so far this year Cramer is showing that this team is capable. A closer look at the Storm roster shows this group is an interesting mix of
experienced players and new blood. Senior Tyrese Jeffries and junior Bruce Lee are making an impact while sophomores Will Kelly, Derek Bradley, and Brenton Elliott are showing they are definitely varsity caliber players. Head coach Brad Sloan acknowledges that the team has some things to work on and knows the trio of sophomores are a big part of the picture. “I think these first four games are an indication of our youth and talent,” Sloan said. “Our top three scorers are sophomores.” Cramer has a lot to work with, but right now coach Sloan wants to focus on developing team maturity and consistency. “With a 2-2 record we have looked really good at times because of our talented core of players,” Sloan said. “We have also shown immaturity due to our youth. I think we will get better and better as the season goes on.” You can’t deny that the sophomore trio of Kelly, Bradley, and Elliott have skills. However, with that youth comes a lack of experience. You can’t get around that. There will be some growing pains, but watching these three develop should be interesting. Right now the Storm is in the middle of the non-conference part of their schedule. Looking at the teams that Cramer has lined up to play, it’s apparent that some of these teams are some tough nuts. Playing a hard non-conference schedule may make things bumpy now, but for a young team trying to develop talent, this may be just what Cramer needs. “We have a tough non-conference schedule with games against York, Weddington, and Central Cabarrus so hopefully that will prepare us for the loaded Big South Conference,” said Sloan.
The Storm will be a team to keep an eye on. If the sophomores continue to develop and
the upperclassmen provide steady leadership this team should be fun to watch.
South Point has a solid week after blasting some Aussies and Wildcats By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
The South Point Red Raiders basketball team has won two of their last three games. Right now the Red Raiders are sitting at 4-1 and are looking pretty good. Last week South Point even had a game with a little international flair to it as the Red Raiders hosted the Australian Horizons, a traveling team from Australia’s Sunshine Coast. The Horizons came to the US for a three-week tour. While stateside they scheduled six to eight games in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. While the Red Raiders definitely rolled out the welcome mat for their Australian guests once the teams hit the court the Red Raiders gave the Aussies a Basketball 101 clinic. South Point came away with a 91-35 win as Logan Threatt and Greyson Hanson finished the game with 18 points apiece. While this was a big win for the Red Raiders this game was about much more than basketball. After the game, the two teams got together and hung out and had a bit of a pizza party. The get together gave the players a chance to get to know each other a little better. Before leaving, some of the Australians exchanged social media information with some of the South Point crowd so they could keep in touch in the future. Who knows maybe these guys will cross paths again “It was a great experience for not only their kids but ours as well to do a cultural exchange,” head coach Kody
Kubbs said. After beating the Australians, South Point took on the West Mecklenburg Hawks in a game that turned out to be tough. With the exception of a poor showing in the second period where the Hawks outscored South Point 15-8, the Red Raiders played West Meck tight. South Point learned a valuable early-season lesson after facing the Hawks. The Red Raiders found out that if you want to win you have to put out in all four periods. If you only score eight points in a period it’s going to cost you. In the end, the lackluster effort of the second period hurt. West Meck won 78-68. South Point wrapped up the week with a huge 93-54 win over the North Gaston Wildcats. Right from the beginning, this game wasn’t much of a contest as the Red Raiders dominated all four periods and won by almost 40 points. Cam Dyer finished the game with 19 points while Ayden Baker scored 16, Cooper Ray scored 15 and Logan Threatt added 14 to the scoring tally. South Point has a few more games left in their non-conference line up before they gear up for Southwestern Conference 2A play. This week, the Red Raiders will get another crack at West Meck. Then South Point finishes the week battling Forestview, and Lake Norman Charter. “We have three more games this week and the conference starts the following week,” coach Kubbs added.
