Local Korean War hero finally laid to rest By Alan Hodge Alan@cfmedia.info
After 69 years and almost to the very day of December 2 when he lost his life in battle in 1950, Korean War soldier Cpl. Earl Duncan’s remains were finally laid to rest last Saturday with full military honors at Gaston Memorial Park. Duncan was a native of Cramerton and was serving in the U.S. Army when he was killed at age 23 in the terrible fighting around the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. He was a member of the 32nd Reg., 7th Div. at the time of his death. Duncan’s remains had been missing for decades, but were returned home to Gaston County on November 23. His remains were identified by the Army using forensic and DNA evidence. The family was notified of his positive identification on September 11, 2019. Visitation for Duncan was held at McAdenville Wesleyan Church. A large number of family and friends attended the event. The church sanctuary was packed with wellwishers who greeted and chatted with Earl’s siblings
Cpl. Earl Duncan Sam and Howard Duncan and sister Elsie Duncan Loftin. Duncan’s great nephew Pastor Michael Loftin read several moving comments written by brother Sam and sister Elsie where they shared some insight into Earl’s personality and the impact his death had on the family. “I remember Earl was a boy full of curiosity who loved to hunt and fish, Sam’s note said. “I remember one time he was in the river and came out with a water snake on his finger. I love him and am glad he is home now. See DUNCAN, Pages 10 & 11

Belmont Central Elementary students craft Christmas cards for the military By Alan Hodge Alan@cfmedia.info
The student body at Belmont Central Elementary School spent a day last week making over 300 festive Christmas cards for members of the U.S. Marine Corps. The handmade cards were decorated with Christmas trees and other Yuletide motifs and signed by the students. The idea for the Christmas
card campaign came from the school’s P.E. teacher Stephanie Daniel. Before coming to Belmont Central last year, Daniel had been a teacher at North Belmont Elementary. What prompted her to come up with the Christmas cards to the military idea was the fact that her husband was in the Marines for eleven years and she taught at the places he was stationed. See CARDS, Page 2
The switch was flipped last Monday that turned on the dazzling Christmas lights in McAdenville. The lights will be turned on nightly until Dec. 26. The ceremonial lighting event was held in front of the Pharr Family YMCA in downtown McAdenville. As is the tradition, a student from McAdenville Elementary School had the honor of throwing the breaker. The student that was selected to turn the lights on this year is Nathaly Sanchez Reyna. CARDS From Page 1 “When he was in the Marines we lived in places like Washington, D.C., Monterey, California, and Okinawa,” Daniel said. The cards will be sent to the Marine boot camp at Paris Island, S.C., and to Marine units in Afghanistan. “It’s important that the troops feel included in the holidays when they are deployed,” Daniel said. “It brings joy to them.” The Christmas card campaign is also a teachable mo-

ment for the students. “I hope the children get an appreciation for those who are deployed and understand that they miss the holidays fighting for our country,” said Daniel. “Bea”, a second grade student took a moment from working on her card to express what the project means to her. “They fight for our country and the card makes them feel like they are home,” she said.
Bea’s classmate, “Eli”, also hoped his card would bring joy to a Marine. “They are not with their family,” he said. “I hope this makes them feel happy.” Belmont Central principal Phyllis Whitworth praised the card campaign. “I think it’s a great opportunity for the students to show care and kindness to our soldiers,” she said. “It will brighten the holidays for those who keep us safe.”

DUNCAN From Page 1 Elsie’s note reflected her thoughts on Earl from the perspective of a little sister. “I remember his beautiful smile. I remember his gener-
ous heart and spirit. I was his little sister and he sent many little gifts home to me. To me these are my most treasured possessions and they will be
passed down to future generations.” Pastor Damien Gula also shared thoughts on Duncan during the McAdenville Wesleyan service. “Today we celebrate the long expected return of Cpl. Earl Duncan,” Gula said. “It is nothing short of a miracle we are here today.” After the church service, the funeral procession moved to Gaston Memorial Park where the internment took place in the War Memorial Garden. The procession was escorted by the Patriot Guard

McADENVILLE From Page 1 She is in Mrs. Prillaman’s Kindergarten Class. She lives in Gastonia. She has a pet dog named Cookie. Her favorite thing about school is playing at recess. She doesn’t care for working with crayons. Her favorite thing to do at home is to play with her dolls. She also likes to play with Cookie. Her favorite food is spaghetti and she likes to snack on cookies and strawberries. Her favorite colors are pink and purple. Nathaly is very excited about flipping the switch to turn on the “Christmas Town USA” lights this year. There is no charge at all to tour Christmas Town USA. Those who are planning a visit by automobile or bus, the best time to view the Christmas Lights is Monday through Thursday. You also can enjoy the lights Friday through Sunday, but traffic is heavier on these days, and waits of 30 to 45 minutes or longer are not unusual. The lights are on Monday through Friday from 5:30pm until 9:30pm Saturday and Sunday 5:30pm until 11pm. Please keep in mind, the lights are on timers and will turn off automatically at the times listed above, regardless of how many cars remain in line. Christmas Town USA Questions and Answers Why do the lights turn off at 9:30pm weeknights? McAdenville is a small textile town, with several plants located in town and several on the outskirts. The plants operate 24 hours a day, with the night shift changing at 10 P.M. The heavy traffic created by the lights would make it impossible for employees
to reach their jobs on time, if the lights were kept on until 11pm weeknights. Can you park and walk ? Yes. Parking is permitted almost anywhere in town, even street parking. A large parking lot is available next to the lake in the middle of town. Also, another large parking area is located behind the small business district in downtown McAdenville. Walking through town is a great way to see the lights. However, if you do walk, please do not litter the streets. Town Ordinances regarding the lightsSection 8-1 - Temporary Vending Prohibited During December. Section 5-19 - Operation of Unmanned Aircraft (Drone)- No person may, during the month of December... launch, land or operate any unmanned aircraft system (UAS) from within the Town Limits of McAdenville. How long is the route thru Christmas Town? The route is approximately 1.3 miles
long, on weekends it may take 30-45 minutes to drive the full route, most weeknights it will take less time. Entrance and Exit PointsThere is only one route through Christmas Town. If you enter town from Interstate 85, once you get to the town limits, continue through town until you reach U.S. Highway 29-74. At this point you will leave Christmas Town. If you enter town from U.S. 29-74 (coming from the Charlotte area) continue through town until you reach Interstate 85. At this point you will leave Christmas Town . I have a dog, are animals allowed to walk thru Christmas Town with their owner?Yes, however, all animals must be on a leash and controlled by their owner. Can I drive my Golf Cart on the streets of McAdenville during the time the Christmas Light are on ? Only if the Golf Cart is Street Legal...meaning... it must be registered by the state of North Carolina and equipped same as an automobile.

Tri-County Animal Rescue:
Pets of the Week
Don’t reward bad behavior Once I was at Earth Fare, sitting in the dining section, eating some veggies. A little boy did not get whatever he wanted at the food bar. He sat in the middle of the floor kicking and screaming at the top of his lungs. The mother sat quietly and patiently eating while the rest of us wondered, “Why doesn’t she give him the cookie.” I looked down at the little boy with the crocodile tears turning beet red from screaming. I gave a sad look and said, “Poor little guy. It’s alright.” The mother, who continued to chew said, “Don’t encourage him.” Later I realized what the mother was doing when I, an adult, sat in the middle of the floor, throwing a temper tantrum at God. I prayed for something, which later turned out to be a good thing God decided to go in a different direction. At the time, I wanted my way, but clearly, I heard God say no. I sat in the middle of the floor, throwing a temper-tantrum and eventually kicked the wall. All I got was a hurt toe. As children, most parents do not reward bad behavior. Like a loving parent, neither does God. Some parents learn, if they reward every bad behavior, chil-
dren will become adults who act out badly. So, why do we in the church reward bad behavior? When adult Christians begin to act out, causing mischief, division, gossip, and much more, we tend to stand back and let it happen. I often ask, “Why don’t the caring people who know better speak up? Why do we let the bullies in the church control the church?” Now, I am not talking about going vigilante on people. Matthew 18:15 does say if a brother (or sister) sin, go privately and discuss with the individual. And, Paul says if someone is caught in sin, you who live by the Spirit go gently and help him or her restore. (Galatians 6:1). Do we permit bad behavior because we don’t know how to help people to live better? Maybe we permit bad behavior because we fear not being liked. Whatever the reason, it is contrary to the Word of God. I have learned I cannot run in to fix every crisis. When we try to fix the crisis, we are only putting a band-aid on a cut loaded with gangrene. Fixing a crisis is surface work. We must help our
leaders learn to do the deep work of soultending. Often, acting out in our Rev. Angela Pleasants churches and District home stems Superintendent from a deeper of Catawba Valley wound of the Methodist Churches soul. Because we lack the understanding of how to go into these deeper issues, we look for a quick fix. Just pacify the persons until they become quiet. Give them the cookie. We all know that it only lasts for a short time before the tantrum begins again. Why? Because we have not taken the time to do the difficult but necessary work of caring for the soul. Brothers and sisters, this is a soul issue. We must learn to go deeper. Sometimes it is not about finding the cure but finding our rest in God. Sometimes, the crisis is there for a reason. Instead of trying to fix it, see what God is pruning off. What must die for resurrection life to come forth?

Thanksgiving has passed, now we are in the first week of advent, as we prepare to celebrate Christmas together. So many aspects of this season are great, yet nothing compares to the Christmas story. It is amazing to think that God chose average, ordinary people such as Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds, to bring salvation to the world through Jesus Christ. That first Christmas, Jesus came to redeem the world, something we could not do for ourselves. Luke 1:26-38 tells of an angelic visit. A young village girl from Nazareth named Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel. Gabriel announced to Mary that she had found favor with God. God was going to bring His Son into the world through Mary. Mary was afraid, and unsure how this would happen. Gabriel told her the Holy Spirit would come upon her, and the Child she would give birth to would be Jesus. Gabriel also told her that her older cousin Elisabeth, who was barren, would have a child too, John the Baptist. Gabriel reminded Mary that nothing was impossible with God! I wonder how many times, as Mary carried this Child, that she thought that she could not do what was being asked of her. She was a

young village girl, from a small town. She probably thought she would never achieve anything, until Gabriel appeared. We often feel just as small and insignificant Rev. Trent Tankin in our big world, yet God calls us to do great things. Mary did not know what would happen, or how, but she trusted in God to accomplish His will. Do we trust God to do great things through us? When we step out on faith, trusting God’s calling, our faith can have great consequences. Luke 1:38 records that Mary said to the angel, “Let it be to me according to your word” (NKJV). By saying yes to God, the world was changed. Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ, who would die on the cross and rise again. Through this, we are saved by faith in Him. Whatever God is calling you to do, by trusting Him, you very well may do great things in the lives of others. Often, we say to God, “I can’t.” God says to us, “I can!” When God calls us, it is easy to think we cannot accomplish what He has willed for us. It is easy to think God should choose someone else. Thankfully, Mary did not tell God she could not, she said yes. As God calls you, although you may be scared and unsure, remember always, “I can’t, but God can!”

Raptors fall to East Surry 26-14 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
The Mountain Island Raptors football team pushed all the way to the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1AA playoffs before falling to the East Surry Cardinals 26-14. The Raptors fought hard but just couldn’t beat the number one seeded Cards. Early in the game, East Surry jumped out to a 13-0 lead, but the Raptors fought back when with two minutes to go in the second quarter Elijah Burris made it into the end zone to put Mountain Island on the board. At the half, the Raptors were still in the game trailing the Cards 13-7. In the third quarter, the Cardinals scored another touchdown and increased their lead to 19-7. The Raptors were definitely pushing hard. Statistically, MI was out-doing the Cards with 366 yards of total offense compared to East Surry’s 218 yards. All-star running back Elijah Burris finished the game with 165 yards off of 27 carries and a pair of touchdowns. However, in the end, turnovers hurt the Raptors as MI quarterbacks threw three picks. On the other hand, while the Cardinals were being outplayed statistically they made the best of what they were given.
In the fourth, both teams scored touchdowns, but MI needed a little bit more in order to win the game. East Surry would go on to win, but this game was not the blowout some expected. The Raptors stood tough and showed they were the real deal. “Our boys fought,” head coach Robert Washington said. “They never gave up. The projections were that they would blow us out. Our boys hung in there.” Washington wasn’t kidding about the projections. The Cardinals are a 1A powerhouse. With the exception of one game against 2A Reidsville, East Surry blasted their opponents all year. Last year the Cardinals went all the way to the state championship game before losing to Tarboro. No one will be surprised if East Surry ends up winning the state championship this year. Going toe to toe for four quarters against one of the top teams in the state is something the Raptors can truly be proud of. 2019 was definitely a good year for Mountain Island. The Raptors finished up at 11-3, won a share of the Southern Piedmont 1A title and arguably had their best season ever. “I’m proud of this team,” Washington said. “We fought through a lot of injuries and adversity. We went 11-3. Our year best ever.”
The Mt. Island Charter School Raptors clashed with the East Surry Cardinals last Friday in the third round playoff contest. The feathers flew and when it was over the Raptors lost the hard fought game 26-14. Photos by Michael Strauss Studios

South Point varsity basketball beats Highland Tech and Forestview By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
The South Point Red Raiders varsity basketball team got off to a fast 2-0 start after beating Highland Tech 79-75 and Forestview 88-64. In the first game of the year, the Rams gave the Red Raiders some trouble. In a nutshell, South Point wasn’t sharp and the Red Raiders ended up in a scrap with a team they should have dominated. “You could tell it was our first game of the year,” head coach Kody Kubbs said. “We were sloppy. We turned the ball over a lot and still pulled out the win.” The Rams and the Red Raiders went back and forth in the first half with the score tied up 33-33 at the half. As the second half got underway neither team was able to pull ahead. At the end of the third, the
score was different but the results were the same. Highland Tech and South Point were once again tied up. This time at 54-54. In the final period, South Point was able to do just enough to push Highland Tech back and secure the win. “Down the stretch we executed well and we were able to hang on for the victory,” coach Kubbs said. Logan Threatt and Cam Dyer were the top scorers for South Point. Threatt had 28 points while Dyer had 18. Also turning in a good performance was Grayson Hansen with 12 points and 16 rebounds In the Forestview game, South Point showed what they were capable of. South Point jumped all over the Jags early by breaking out to a quick 25-13 lead in the first period. That early lead turned out to be something the Red Raiders never
gave up. The Red Raiders played good team basketball against Forestview. Everyone did a good job feeding their teammates the ball. “We played pretty well,” coach Kubbs said. “We did a good job sharing the basketball. We had 24 assists on 33 made baskets.” Ayden Baker stepped up and scored 25 points. The six-foot five-inch junior also pulled down four rebounds and helped with four assists.
Going 2-0 is definitely a step in the right direction. However, South Point will need to keep the momentum going if the Red Raiders hope to be successful this year. South Point still has a few things they need to work out. This is a team with a ton of offensive talent, but the defense needs to show they can deliver on a consistent basis. “We can score at will,” Kubbs pointed out. “Our thing will be can we stop other people from scoring.”
