Grab and Go lunch program feeding thousands of kids By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Get ready to digest an incredible number. In just a little over two weeks (March 17-30) the Gaston County Schools Grab and Go free breakfast and lunch program gave out over 73,000 bagged meals to students stuck at home during this Coronavirus event- and the meals will be still be handed out until the students return (hopefully) on May 15. Currently, Grab and Go meals are available at 20 locations countywide (see list below). North Belmont Elementary is one of the busiest Grab
and Go pick up points. “We are giving out over 800 meals a day,” said North Belmont Elementary cafeteria manager Peggy Banner. In addition to her regular staff, Banner is getting help making and handing out the meals from cafeteria workers brought in from Belmont Middle, Pinewood Elementary, and Catawba Heights Elementary schools. Getting the meals ready is a logistical challenge that’s being met. The meal components of sandwiches, fruit, juice boxes, cereal, and milk comes from the main school nutritional headquarters in See GRAB & GO, Page 2
Combating stress and anxiety in family life By Kimberly Allen Work as usual? Probably not. This is a whole new time and we are all working toward a new normal. When asking others how to describe these times, I hear things like “stressful,” “difficult,” “frustrating” — all forms of stress. The only consistency is that transitions are hard, and transitioning to this new normal makes this a stressful time for all. There are three types of stress we can experience: Positive Stress: This is the day-to-day stress we need to get out of bed and write a
blog post or do whatever it is we do on a daily basis. Tolerable Stress: My guess is that this is where the majority of people are as they transition to the new normal. This is serious stress that is temporary and buffered by supportive relationships in our lives. Toxic Stress: When people have chronic stress that happens without supportive relationships, it is toxic. Prolonged toxic stress results in compromised immune systems and is generally bad for people’s health and well-being as it massively increases See STRESS, Page 6

Named Catalyst Mercantile and owned by Kendle Starcher, the basic idea will see local artists and other creative folks come together and have their wares on sale under one roof at 117 N. “I had been thinking about the concept for a couple of years,” she said. “I had been going to pop-up craft markets and made connections with others who made art and crafts but also had full-time jobs. Catalyst Mercantile will give them the chance to have an outlet for their work and keep the pop-up concept with the convenience of a storefront.” Vendors will rent a space in the store. Starcher has also come up with a way for them to save on rent. “They can come to the store and work one or two days a month,” she said. “Not only can they get a rent discount, they can also meet customers personally.” So far, Starcher has over
a dozen vendors lined up. Art works and products that will be offered are wide ranging and include jewelry, goat milk soaps, art prints of Mt. Holly scenes, watches, chic clothing, candles, whimsical greeting cards, home décor, and accessories. “About eighty percent of the items are handmade,” said Starcher. Right now, the store is stocked, but due to the ongoing health situation, she is waiting to open the doors to the public. “We are playing it by ear,” she said. I Love a Parade! By Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org
Most people enjoy a good parade from time to time. Whether it is the big parades on Thanksgiving Day, or local Christmas parades in our hometowns, parades are fun. There is something great, especially for kids, in seeing large character balloons, marching bands, and even Santa at the end of a parade. This past Sunday we celebrated the best parade ever, Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday began the Holy Week we are in now, the last week of Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry, culminating in His death, and resurrection on Easter. All four gospels in the Bible record this awesome event. Luke’s account, Luke 19:2844, gives us a great word picture of that first Palm Sunday. It was the time of the Passover feast in Jerusalem, and all adult Jewish males were required to attend if they could. Jesus and His disciples made their way to the city to observe the feast. As Jesus neared the towns of Bethphage and Bethany, He sent two of His disciples into the neighboring village where they would find a colt tied. Jesus told them to bring the colt, and if anyone asked why they took it, to tell them the Lord needed it. They found as He said, and brought the colt. They threw their clothes on the colt, and He rode it into Jerusalem. Many followed this great parade, throwing palm branched in front of Jesus, crying out “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.” (Luke 19:38,
NKJV). As Jesus entered the city, He wept over the city, knowing that soon He would be crucified, and many would never Rev. Trent Tankin believe. Palm Sunday is more than the Sunday before Easter, it is a parade of victory for the Christian. Jesus was letting the world know that day, that He was the King of kings, and Lord of lords. We are in a time when our church buildings are closed, yet we are the church, and we are parading for all of the world to see. It is so awesome to see so many believers speaking of their faith on social media. It is so powerful seeing Christians praying for others, and working in their communities to meet each other’s needs. As Jesus entered the city, Matthew in his account, writes that many asked, “Who is this?” (Mathew 21:10, NKJV). His followers responded by saying, this is Jesus! We have an awesome opportunity this Easter season to tell others about Jesus. Many are in fear, and some feel hopeless during this uncertain time. People are seeking guidance and peace. They need Jesus. They hear us talking about Jesus. This Easter season may we share Jesus with someone who needs to know. In an uncertain world, we find truth and salvation in Jesus. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Share this news with someone today who is asking, “Who is this?”

Gaston schools “go green” to save money and the planet

Gaston County Schools is doing its part to “go green” with energy conservation efforts that are saving money and the planet. Over the past three years, schools have cut electricity use by nine percent, saved an estimated 16 million gallons of water, and reduced carbon emissions by more than 11.5 million pounds. Cutting carbon emissions equates to planting 1,574 acres of trees or eliminating 770 automobiles from the roads. Further, the schools and central office buildings have implemented energy conservation strategies that are a big help financially as utility rates rise, according to Dr. Morgen Houchard, the district’s executive director for auxiliary services. “Reducing energy
progress. The beauty of this behavioral-based program is that it accomplishes two important goals – reducing costs, especially in light of rising rates and fees, and having a positive effect on the environment.” Southwest Middle School principal Cindy Hester makes it a priority to review her school’s energy information, and she works with her staff to determine what they can do to conserve as much energy as possible. It’s a practice that is saving money for her school. “People don’t realize how much we are paying in energy bills,” said Hester. “By following the advice of our energy manager, we can make a big difference by putting money that we save on utilities back into the classroom for the benefit of our students and teachers.
consumption is simply the right thing to do because we want our students to inherit a healthy place to live,” he said. The energy conservation efforts are the result of a partnership with EduCon Energy and the work of the district’s energy managers, who visit schools regularly and confer with administration to emphasize the importance of being energy conscious. “The key to success with this type of program depends on the degree of participation from all of the stakeholders, including maintenance, district administration, school staff members, and students,” said Andrew LaRowe, president of EduCon Energy. “This commitment has been very evident with Gaston County Schools, and we are thrilled with the

Earning the “Quality School” distinction – it’s a big deal for Gaston County Schools “Distinction as a Quality School” – it’s a phrase that has a nice ring to it, and it applies to all 55 public schools in Gaston County. In June 2018, Gaston County Schools earned its re-accreditation from AdvancED, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that conducts rigorous, on-site reviews of more than 36,000 educational institutions and systems in the United States and 70 countries. The extensive accreditation process takes place every five years and involves an outside team of education professionals coming into schools to observe, interview stakeholders,
STRESS From Page 1 in cortisol (good in small doses; bad in large doses). Toxic stress makes us lose our body’s ability to shut down the stress reaction and can make us sick. The truth is, stress impacts us all differently. Some of us can easily pull through stress and change, while others of us have more difficulty. Not good or bad, but just different. What is most unique about this stressful time is that it includes isolation. Since we are socially distancing, we might have to work intentionally to keep those important connections with others. It is also noteworthy that those with a history of anxiety or depression can be more at risk during this transition. The good news: While stress is the new norm, there are several things we can do to reduce stress and anxiety. Key Strategies for Stress Reduction Some of the more familiar evidence-based strategies include eating healthy, exercising and sleeping. In addition to those, there are a variety of mental and social strategies that have also been found to be effective at combating stress and anxiety, including: Having Healthy Relationships: Anyone that knows me knows I love talking about what’s called the 5:1 ratio for building healthy relationships. If we want to be happy, this is a great time to start increasing our positive to negatives in all of our relationships. Emotion regulation is also critical; learning to stay calm during stress can be the difference in building resilience and happiness. Practicing Mindfulness or Meditation. This includes deep breathing. Seems simple, right? The trick is remembering to stop and take a deep breath when we start to see the signs of stress in ourselves. If you just ground yourself for about 60 seconds, you can focus wholly on deep breaths in and deep breaths out. If you are really
collect data, and ultimately determine whether a district is deserving of accreditation. Accreditation is an endorsement, certification, and recognition that signifies that schools have earned the distinction of being a quality school. The accreditation for Gaston County Schools is valid until 2023 when the review process happens again. Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker stated, “We are so proud of our schools for what they do every day to provide a quality education for our children, and to earn accreditation from AdvancED is affirmation that we are achieving
feeling stressed, you can also tense your muscles as you breathe in and relax as you exhale. Calming your mind while focusing on breathing can be a part of meditation. When There are Children in the Home These strategies work for both adults and children. For families with children in the home, times can be challenging as we try to balance work and family responsibilities. Don’t believe me? Try teaching a class with a four-yearold in the next room. Or even a 14-year-old. Balancing remote working can be a challenge not only for those with kids at home but even for those who have to share space with their partners. Families that are not able to work from home can face different stressors — that of balancing finances or of losing a job. These are stressful times in family life. What happens when parents get stressed? More often than not, they pass that stress on to the children, sometimes directly and often indirectly. Stress can get bad, and when it does, it can really impact the well-being of children. Just ask my children. I’m the first to admit that my children feel my stress. It is not just adults; children are likely to have feelings of anxiety due to all the changes they are experiencing as well. Prolonged stress can have an effect on a child’s development, making it so important that we implement strategies to help combat the negative impact of stress and anxiety. Recommended Parenting Strategies If you have children, I encourage additional strategies, including good old-fashioned positive parenting: Set expectations with your children. Make sure your expectations are developmentally appropriate. Catch your kids practicing good behavior and give them lots of attention. Model positive behaviors. Set limits in calm ways and focus on children’s positive behavior. Create structure by establishing a sleep routine and a
and excelling here in Gaston County Schools.” Following the review team’s visit to Gaston County Schools, team members spent several months completing their evaluation and determining areas of strengths and what the district should do to fulfill its commitment to continuous improvement. Booker added, “The accreditation team used a rating system that evaluated various areas as either exceeds expectations, meets expectations, emerging, or needs improvement. We had 10 areas to exceed expectations, 15 areas to meet expectations, six areas that were emerg-
ing, and no areas in need of improvement – this is an outstanding accomplishment for Gaston County Schools.” Here are four takeaways from the accreditation review: The accreditation team was pleased to see the school district investing in its people and the educational services provided for children. They believe the investment in school choice options (the district now provides 20 school choice/magnet school programs) gives students an opportunity to “find what they like, and it will help them to thrive.” During their school visits, Lauren Grindstaff, a fifth grade teacher at Kiser Elementary School in Stanley, leads a lesson in her classroom on February 27. Grindstaff says she is proud to work at Kiser Elementary, which earned the “Quality School” distinction as a result of Gaston County Schools’ five-year accreditation process. Photo provided

You can also set limits around screen time. Strategies Especially Relevant for COVID-19 Even with all the positive parenting, there is still a need for strategies specifically relevant to the COVID- 19 pandemic. Let’s face it, children and youth know something has changed. As parents, we need to be cognizant of how — not if — these changes are impacting our children: Offer reassurance. It is very likely that your children are going to act out or respond negatively to the changes in their lives. That is how they express negative emotions (truth moment: me too!). Rather than berate or punish, this is time to offer reassurance. Children need additional affection, cuddles, empathy, understanding, and love. They need to know everything is going to be OK — that we will get through this stressful time together. Limit media and explain what is happening in age appropriate ways. While children and teens know there is a change, they might not completely understand those changes. Keeping the news on excessively can add stress; it is best practice to limit exposure to media and news outlets and, instead, use ageappropriate language to explain what is happening. Have fun together. Think about your best day in the past few weeks. What made it great? Did you have fun? Even in the most normal
of times, children need attention, and they are smart about getting it. If we give it to them when having fun, we will see fewer bad behaviors. Even better, the more fun we have with them, the more resilient they become. True even for teens! Laughter is the best medicine. As L.R. Knost said, “Everyday in one hundred small ways, our child asks, ‘Do you see me? Do you hear me? Do I matter?’ Their behavior often reflects our response.” Get help when you need it. During this stressful time, it could be that stress becomes too much, and we need additional support. This can come in a variety of ways, but might be therapy, coaching or education. Watch for signs of stress and respond according. Signs include things like separation anxiety, excessive fear or worries, sadness or sleep changes. Sometimes stress and anxiety can take the form of aggression or hyperactivity as well. Bottom line, you know yourself and your family better than anyone does. Do what works for you and your family. We are just starting the new normal and practice makes perfect improvement. After all, who needs the stress of perfectionism? About the authorKimberly Allen, Ph.D., BCC, CFLE is an associate professor and director of graduate programs in Youth, Family and Community Sciences at North Carolina State University. She is also an NC State Extension specialist.
the team saw well-managed classrooms with well-behaved students who are supported by a caring staff. They characterized the schools as “very safe and conducive to learning.” They commended the district’s efforts in the area of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and were impressed by the number of students who have earned CTE credentials, commenting that the school district is “empowering its graduates.” The team complimented the school district’s sense of neighborhood pride and commitment to schools and described the culture of engagement and shared decision-making as “highly commendable.” So what does accreditation mean for teachers and students? Lauren Grindstaff, a fifth grade teacher at Kiser Elementary School in Stanley, sees accreditation as a “seal of approval” and confirmation that Gaston County’s public schools are providing a quality educational experience for students with many opportunities in academics, athletics, the fine arts, extracurricular activities, and other areas. “For my school, accreditation means we are doing what we should to make certain that our students are learning and growing every day,” said Grindstaff. After the accreditation process, school and district leaders began considering an update to the school district’s strategic plan. Accredita-
tion and strategic planning are processes that go handin-hand, and it is a time for evaluation, reflection, and looking ahead. Strategic planning involved evaluating the district’s current vision, mission, and goals and working with various stakeholder groups (students, parents, employees, business/community partners, etc.) to gather feedback about priorities for the next five years. The plan includes four overarching goals/priorities: College and Career Ready: Every student will graduate prepared for college, the workforce, and other lifeenhancing opportunities. Healthy, Safe, and Responsible Schools: Every student has the opportunity to learn in a safe school environment. Innovation: Every employee uses innovative practices to serve all students, parents, and other stakeholders. Qualified Workforce: Every employee is qualified and committed to the education of all children. “Moving forward, we will continue to provide a safe school environment for students and employees, work to ensure that our graduates are ready for college and careers, employ a qualified workforce that is dedicated to the education of all children, and use innovative practices to give our students a dynamic and challenging educational experience,” said Booker.

N.C. strawberry growers adapt operations to COVID-19 restrictions North Carolina’s strawberry season kicked off around the same time the first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in the state. Now, local strawberry growers, who rely heavily on pick-your-own operations, are adapting to find new markets for their products. “None of our growers could have expected the impact of COVID-19 on the state,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “It is encouraging to see how quickly growers have responded to the situation and what extra measures they have taken to ensure consumers have a safe supply of fresh strawberries this year.” While strawberry growers already adhere to good agricultural practices, many are taking additional steps to ensure the health and wellbeing of their staff and consumers. Some of the steps taken include installing additional hand washing stations; providing hand sanitizers for employees and customers; requiring employees to wear disposable gloves while handling produce; and ensuring sick employees stay home. In addition, several pick-yourown farms have encouraged social distancing by limiting the number of rows that can be picked and limiting groups to 10 people or less. Changes also are being made to the way customers order and pay for strawberries. Many growers are offering pre-orders with roadside pickup, allowing customers to stay in their car. While
some farms are even offering home delivery. Offers vary by farm, and consumers are encouraged to check with individual farms for specific details. The N.C. Strawberry Association provides a listing of you-pick strawberry farms with contact information at www.ncstrawberry.
com/farm-locator. Strawberry growers began picking in mid-March in Eastern North Carolina. Growers in the Piedmont expect strawberries from midApril through the first week of June. In Western North Carolina, strawberry lovers can find local berries from
late April through the first week of July. North Carolina is the third-largest strawberry producer in the nation. In 2018, the state grew 1,100 acres of strawberries generating $21.3 million in farm income.

over $675 billion federal dollars annually to local governments and communities. It is estimated, when a resident is missed in the Census 2020, Gaston County could lose approximately $1,800.00 to $2,000.00, per person, per year or $18,000.00 to $20,000.00, per person, over the ten (10) year period towards grant funding and other various state revenues. Gaston County has partnered with the U.S. Census Bureau to raise the awareness to all segments of the County’s population of the importance of Census 2020 to encourage participation. To accomplish the goal of a complete and accurate count, Gaston County, in conjunction with the U.S. Census Bureau, established a Census
2020 Complete Count Committee to develop strategies and initiatives to promote census awareness and education. Official Census 2020 operations will begin with the U.S. Census Bureau mailing in mid-March, Census 2020 notifications to each residence to complete the survey either online, by phone or by mail. If a residence does not participate online, by phone, or by mail, the U.S. Census Bureau will eventually send a Census Enumerator to count the household in person between May and July 2020. The Gaston County Board of Commissioners proclaims the months of March and April 2020 be designated as Census 2020 Awareness Months in Gaston County.

Recently, the schools were chosen for the prestigious North Carolina A+ School distinction. “Our school has always emphasized the importance of the arts so becoming an A+ School makes sense,” said Rankin principal Donna Kelly. “For years, we’ve had an outstanding partnership with the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, and the arts are a big focus right now in the community of Mount Holly. It is a natural fit for us.” Being an A+ School will generate a lot of energy among students, teachers, parents, and the community, according to Pinewood principal Tyler West. She said the school is looking forward to offering new and interesting approaches to teaching and learning. “The A+ School designation provides a different way for us to engage students,” said West. “It also gives our teachers an opportunity to ignite more excitement in their classrooms.” To get a glimpse of what it means to be an A+ School, Kelly and West had to look no further than W.A. Bess Elementary in Gastonia. W.A. Bess earned the North Carolina A+ School distinction about this time last year and began its arts-infused approach to school in August. In a North Carolina A+ School, the “A+” represents the addition of the arts across the curriculum. “In everything we do, the arts have a presence in our classrooms,” said W.A. Bess principal Laura Dixon. According to Dixon, research indicates that arts education is linked to positive academic and social outcomes, increased civic engagement, and higher academic achievement. Further, students who are engaged in the arts have higher degrees of empathy and acceptance and demonstrate stronger critical thinking skills. At an A+ School, arts education is approached in three ways: Arts Integration gives equal value to arts standards and non-arts standards to create hands-on, practical, connected, and meaningful learning experiences for students. Arts Education involves the teaching of specific disciplines like music, dance, theater arts, and visual arts and promoting each one as a special art form. Students gain knowledge of each form and have opportunities to experience all of them through their individual learning, group activities, and perfor-

Arts Exposure creates exciting opportunities for students to explore artistic works, performances, and careers in the arts both at school and in the community. With her school’s A+ distinction, Dixon takes pride in seeing students and staff reach for an even higher level of achievement. “Students who are a part of an arts curriculum take what they learn with them – this benefits them later in school and beyond graduation,” said Dixon, who is the 2019-2020 Gaston County Principal of the Year. “Once an understanding of and appreciation for the arts is in you, it remains and you benefit from it for the rest of your life. This is what we hope happens for our students at W.A. Bess.” Kelly and West believe that what is going on at W.A Bess will also take place at their school. “We already have an arts mindset at Rankin so the A+ School aspect will greatly enhance what we are doing, and we will be able to do much more,” said Kelly. “What I loved most about visiting other A+ Schools was seeing students who are happy and excited about learning. Being an A+ School is going to bring new energy to our school.” One idea that West says she will implement at Pinewood is a series of “Family Art Night” programs that will involve teachers, students, and even parents in the arts. Kelly and West believe the A+ School designation will have a positive effect on their school. In a time

The A+ School program is a dynamic initiative of the N.C. Department of Public Instruction in partnership with the N.C. Arts Council. A group of students at W.A.
