Stuart Cramer’s Mary Elizabeth Martin uses both sides of her brain By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Stuart Cramer High graduating senior Mary Elizabeth Martin is one of those people who utilize both sides of their brain. On the creative side, she is a talented clarinetist who has been an active member of the Storm marching band. On the more analytical side, she is setting her sights on a career as a chemical engineer after taking advantage of a full scholarship with a study abroad stipend at the University of Alabama. She’s the daughter of Florencio and Beverly Martin. She attended first and second grade at St. Michael’s Catholic School. She went to Lowell Elementary and Cramerton Middle before coming to Stuart Cramer where her musical and scholastic really took off. First, the music. She’s been in the Stuart Cramer marching band each one of

her four years at the school. “I learned to play the clarinet in middle school, she said. “I love playing in the band. I especially like playing Irish tunes because they are fun and have a nice dancing type beat.” In addition to the marching band where she is woodwind captain, Martin also plays in the concert band. Here’s what her band director of four years, Kameron Radford, had to say about Martin on and off the field. “Mary Elizabeth is one of the most thoughtful, kind, and hard working students I have ever had the opportunity of teaching,” he said. “Her desire for academic and musical excellence is something that is extremely rare among students today. She not only pursues this excellence in the classroom, but also through extra-curricular endeavors such as selection to county and district See MARTIN, Page 6

East Gaston’s Levi Summey is a music man By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

East Gaston senior Levi Summey will graduate this week and leave behind a legacy he forged by combining his love of music with a burning desire to serve his school. Levi, the son of Barry and Kristy Summey, grew up in Stanley. He attended Springfield and Kiser elementary schools and Stanley Middle School. From an early age, Summey became active in school leadership roles. “I served on the student council in middle school,” he said. He carried that desire to serve to East Gaston where he was student body vice president during his freshman and sophomore years. He went on to become student body president during his junior and senior years.

Summey explained how he used his strong people skills to achieve office. “I felt like I had good connections with the other students,” he said. “I didn’t make campaign posters. I went to people and asked them what would make East Gaston better.” Being student body president taught Summey a bit about what it takes to be a leader. “Pleasing everyone is a challenge,” he said. Summey used his time in office to good advantage. “I feel like I did a lot to boost school spirit at East Gaston,” he said. “A big part of that was planning pep rallies with the executive council.” But pep rallies are just the tip of the iceberg in what Summey did to make East Gaston a greater school. He helped get the broadcasting See SUMMEY, Page 6

South Point’s Elissa Whitcomb heading for the Air Force By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Graduating South Point High senior Elissa Whitcomb has as much energy as an F-16 fighter jet which is very appropriate as she intends to make a career of the U.S. Air Force. The daughter of Jared and Stephenie Whitcomb, Elissa was born in Florida and also lived in Utah and California before coming to Belmont during her sophomore year. Her father’s job as a program manager for military/civilian contractors let the family see the country. Whitcomb fell in love with Belmont right away. “I really like the fact that the city government is involved with the community,” she said. “Also, everyone here knows everyone.” During her time at South Point, Whitcomb has been very active in the JNROTC program and as a member of

its color guard. She had previously been in the ROTC during her family’s second time living in Florida. “I wanted to continue by being in the program at South Point,” she said. “It gives you leadership opportunities.” Whitcomb has had her career path plotted out for quite a while. “I knew I wanted to go into the military after graduation,” she said. “I was first interested in the Navy, but didn’t want to be stuck on a boat. The Air Force jobs fit me better.” She thought long and hard before making a decision about what job she wants to do once she begins active duty. “I considered being a remotely piloted aircraft officer,” she said. “But, I decided to be a cyber security officer. The Air Force is very heavy into cyberspace See WHITCOMB, Page 6

TODAY’S QUOTE: “The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety.”

OPINION

- George Muller

My Opinion: It’s virtually impossible Well, it seems like virtual reality is the name of the game these days. Why, I even had a virtual day myself, so here it is. I woke up in my virtual mansion overlooking the virtual sparkling waters on a virtual lake. Then I had my virtual chef whip up a big ol’ virtual brekkers for Sharon and I. Then, I drove my virtual 1969 Jaguar XKE to my virtual airstrip and climbed into my virtual 1943 WWII Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane and flew a virtual mission over Lake Norman and then I came back and made a virtual threepoint landing and after I parked the plane and greeted the virtual throng that awaited me as a virtual hero I called my virtual helo pilot and he came and picked me up and made a virtual landing in the cul-de-sac where we live on Melody Drive, Gasolovakia, NC, and picked Sharon up too and then he took us on a virtual ride to our virtual mansion on top of a virtual mountain and we had a virtual lunch of filet mignon and some virtual Boston crème pie for dessert. Next, we hopped on our virtual Lear jet and flew to our virtual private island on the virtual Outer Banks and hung out a few virtual

hours and there was virtually no one there but us and we had some virtual peace and quiet and looked out at the beautiful Alan Hodge Banner-News Editor virtual ocean. Well, it was virtual time to go home so we hopped back in the virtual jet and when we got to the virtual airport our virtual chauffeur took us home to Melody Drive, Gasolovakia, NC (oh wait I already said that). For supper we had some virtual fried chicken and virtual mashed heirloom ‘taters and some virtual organic salad and I had a couple of virtual wobblepops to wash it all down with. Well, the day was coming to a virtual close so we watched 90 Day Fiance’ on our virtual 100-inch flat screen TV. I took a soak in our virtual massage tub filled with virtual mineral waters from the South of France and put on some virtual pure silk PJs and as I drifted off reflected on what a virtual day it had beenvirtually impossible that is.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him

1+1+1=1 Many things exist but we may not understand them. A San Antonio, Texas young man, for instance, goofed around in school, flunked several grades but was eventually ushered through school and woke up to the fact that he hadn’t learned how to traverse our world; couldn’t even balance his checkbook. Similarly we can suspect God exists and even ask for prayer from those who have a relationship with God but those helps only go so far in this life and certainly are not a ticket to heaven. God exists and we must accept that by faith. God is one God with a triune nature; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is hard to comprehend but it is true none-the-less. That’s the way infiniteness works; we cannot grasp concepts like eternal God, infinite, and self-existent. Nor can we understand how 1+1+1 =1, but in God’s case, it is possible. Math is intriguing and often mysterious too. Some understand it well; some, to a point but get stuck; hit a seemingly impenetrable wall. I was like that. I loved math and was good at it until I got to the calculus, differential

equations and nonEuclidean geometry. I could not visualize those t h r e e e v e n Dennis Siracusa though I earnestly wanted to. So I adjusted and redirected my life to factor in my shortcomings. Biblical mysteries are similar. In 1 Corinthians 13:12 the Lord reminds us that in this lifetime, many spiritual lessons will remain partially understood until we get to heaven. We may well ask why this is and I see a couple answers. First, God is sovereign and infinite and we aren’t and again… we simply cannot grasp infiniteness. Second, while Jesus earthly ministry lasted about 3 years, He was so incredibly busy the apostle John tells us in John 21:25 if he and the other disciples wrote all about what Jesus did, the whole world couldn’t contain those books. Now that’s staggering and humbling. So what’s the answer? Jesus wants us to rest on faith, purpose, and endurance.

Thursday, June 11, 2020

Faith: Hebrews 11:1 NIV “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:6 NIV “….and without faith it is impossible to please God.” Purpose and Endurance: Hebrews 12:1 NIV “….let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” We’re all running our race, like it or not. Jesus offers His gift of salvation to all of us regardless of how badly we’ve messed up our lives. Have we accepted His offer? As we light up the skies with our fireworks this Fourth of July and celebrate our great country let’s ask ourselves if we are we lighting up our world with the truth and power of God’s salvation message too? God wants to walk alongside us as we navigate the valleys and hills of this life. Are we taking full advantage of God’s loving, infinite offer? Are we destined for a glorious, eternity with Him or are we stubbornly fixed on struggling through life toward a disastrous conclusion?

Meditations How we can heal our pain Once I had several cans of caffeine-free diet coke. I dropped one of the cans and put it back in the pack. As you know, when a can of soda falls, the contents on the inside are shaken, and it is wise to wait before opening. The trouble came when I did not know which drink I dropped. And, yes, wouldn’t you know it. I opened the one I dropped and ended up wearing more of the diet coke than I was able to drink. Last week I asked, “What are we doing, and what are you putting into place as the body of Christ, to help people reach into that place of their deepest hurt and pain, to begin the process of healing?” – Silence. No one could respond, maybe because we don’t know how to deal with our pain and healing. I reflect on September 11, 2001, when terrorists attacked our country. The churches were filled for weeks. Several months later, many of the congregations were no longer over-flowing. People asked, “What happened to the people?” People came searching for answers and searching for relief from their pain. When people are in pain, we cannot program people back to health; it’s about relationships. And, most relationships have ups and downs. It can be messy and fulfilling. But when it is on the downward spiral and messy, the answer is not to deny it or run from it. In marriage vows, we say, “for better or worse, for richer or poor,” yet when the worse or poor comes, we fight or flight. How do we help people go into that very place of hurt and pain that they have neglected for so long and have suppressed it with work, play, life? So, day after day, month after month, year after year, it is buried deeper and deeper. It does not go away, but like the contents of the soda can it is festering. It is bubbling until one day something happens, we explode. So, how do we begin the process of healing? As we walk the journey of healing, there is the encounter. Jesus was hanging out around a well after a long journey. Little did a woman of Samaria know that day would be her divine encounter. The Samaritan woman had deep pain, unrest, and loneliness in her heart. She did not confront this pain but

24 Month CD or IRA CD Special

It seems every year as a new wave of students enter new chapters in their lives; college, trade school, or even the work force, there is the expression of congratulations that begin chiming all throughout the community. This is a time where we all come together and ring in a celebration of the new age who will join the rest of us in the “real world”. And while this year may have taken a slightly different turn of events back in February, Class of 2020 don’t fret because you still deserve all the applause and accolades in the world for overcoming the odds, even in such unusual circumstances. As Christmas of 2019 came to an end and January birthed a bright and shining renaissance of the roaring 20’s, I can only imagine that you had only just become adjusted to your second semester’s schedule when the virus impacted our nation. To some it may feel like an eternity ago that we weren’t wearing masks to go into the grocery store, and toilet paper was a nonchalant item that we didn’t hoard away like squirrels in the winter. As teacher workdays began to dwindle and spring break was eaten away, it soon became clear that there was going to be a new way to continue education that no one was prepared for. Pen and paper were put away and computers came out as Zoom meetings became the new classroom for many, which may have made classes easier or harder on students depending on the classwork. Through it all however, you made it! You came through on the other side of pandemic pandemonium for that passing grade! This crisis not only closed the schools for educational purposes, but extracurricular activities as well. It’s strange to think about high school with no sporting events, no band or choral concerts, no art galleries, no beauty pageants, no musicals or theater productions, and of all things no prom. In all the movies and television shows, prom is made out to be such a big deal and many teenagers look forward to the big night of dressing up and going out for a night of fun and festivities. The effects that Covid-19 has had on our

community go beyond so much more than a health concern, but a social impact and I think I speak for all of us when I say I’m sorry that this has Shelton Fisher had such a robbing impact on your high school experience. There are many ways in which the communities have come together to celebrate your achievement, but we would be foolish in thinking that it replaces the real thing. Perhaps one day the class of 2020 can come together in a reunion for the prom of a lifetime, to celebrate the glory they never could but always deserved. As such a unique graduating class, I’ll bet you weren’t aware that you have quite an honor in your hands beyond that diploma. You see, if you have been paying attention to the news and social media you have probably heard the terms “new normal” and “change” floating around. Did you know that you are probably going to be pioneers in a new wave of how we live our day to day lives? Think about this… In January, nothing had to be sanitized. Wal-Mart was open twentyfour hours a day and only closed on Christmas. People are covering their faces not only in stores but at work, on playgrounds and parks, inside and outside of buildings. Within a matter of months, life as we know it has been changed so drastically and you of anyone out there should be fully aware of that. As you grow older in this “real world” of ours and develop new skills, honing your craft and trade, becoming business owners of tomorrow, and fulfilling your dreams, remember what you have overcome over these last few months. You are pioneers on the brink of a revolution and what you do today, shapes our tomorrow. Be diligent in your thinking, and kind in your heart. Remember that sometimes it doesn’t always take a degree to get you where you’re supposed to be in this life. Most of all, keep in mind that this life is only what you make of it and that you are the only driver of your wagon, no matter where this life takes you. All you have to do is steer it in the direction you want to go.

It’s your life now! By Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org pastortrent@salvationchurchnc.org

We are in the graduation season now. Over the last week, and the weeks to come, students all over our area will be graduating. My youngest son graduates from high school this week. This year is certainly unlike others, given the pandemic, yet many young people will be setting out to college, new jobs, or other opportunities. Even though it has been twenty-seven years since I graduated, I can still remember that feeling of finally beginning my adult life! Those who are graduating this year, leave childhood behind, and embark on the life God has given them. In 1 Kings 3:3-15, Solomon found himself like our graduates today. He was about twenty years old or so, about the same age as many of those who are graduating. His father David had been king over Israel for decades. Now, David was dead, and Solomon was thrust into the role as king, as a young man. One night after Solomon had been offering sacrifices to God, God came to him in a dream. God said to him, “Ask! What shall I give you?” (1 Kings 3:5, NKJV). Solomon did not ask for wealth or the defeat of his enemies, he simply asked for wisdom. Solomon told God he did not know how to lead such a great nation, especially since he was so young. God gave him wisdom, more wisdom than any king had, or would have. God also gave him the things he

did not ask for, wealth, peace, and long life. God reminded him, that if he would always trust Him, He would go with him. Solomon had lived as Rev. Trent Tankin a child of a king, with all of its benefits. Now his father was gone, and he was on his own as king. Our graduates no longer will have mom and dad making all of their choices. They will be on their own, off at college, paying bills, and experiencing adulthood. Solomon wisely did not seek wealth and power. He concentrated on the important things in life. For our graduates, achieving wealth, status, and fame are not the true important things. Living a life pleasing to God is the most important achievement we can accomplish. Wise Solomon gave perhaps the best advice to our graduates in Proverbs 3:6 writing, “In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths” (NKJV). For those graduating, may they seek God in all things, letting Him lead. Most of all, may they never forget God, or place other things in front of Him. Sadly, for Solomon, he had everything. He trusted in God, yet the wisest man made the most foolish choice. In his later life he forgot God, and worshipped gods of the lands around him. If you are graduating this year, congratulations! As you begin your adult life, turn to God. If you will walk with Him, He will walk with you, always!

honor bands and awards in the Science Olympiad program. Not only does she display academic and musical excellence, what is even more impressive is the excellence of her character. She is widely respected by her peers as a great leader because of the openness, empathy, and compassion she displays to others. With such a strong foundation to stand on I am confident that she will be able to build great things for her future!” Writing about her years in the band helped Martin earn the prestigious and competitive National Merit Scholarship- the very first student at Stuart Cramer to achieve that mark. Part of the Merit Scholarship application involved writing an essay. “I wrote about my experience in band and how it helped me in school with leadership skills and discipline,” she said. The other part of the National Merit Scholarship meant that Martin had to score big on the PSAT and SAT exams. Her SAT score was near perfect. Incidentally, her sister Mary Joanne who went to Highland School of Technology is also a National Merit Scholar. Martin has been involved in many other Stuart Cramer activities. She took part in the Science Olympiad. She also delved into material science. “That’s where you study polymers and how they behave,” she said. Martin participated in theater at Stuart Cramer and took part in several top notch performances. At the University of Alabama, Martin will major in

Her energy and intelligence earned Whitcomb an appointment to the Air Force Academy as well as an Air Force Type 1 National Scholarship. However, another opportunity presented itself. “I went to the Air Force Academy last summer for a week,” she said. “I also dd a ‘shadow day’ at UNCCharlotte last November. I decided to go to Charlotte and join the ROTC program there, it’s in the top ten percent in the nation. Every ROTC detachment gets one scholarship for an incoming freshman and the UNC-Charlotte commander gave theirs to me in addition to the one I already had. I will graduate as an Air Force officer.” Whitcomb has made great use of her time at South Point and made a big impression on everyone there. Here’s what her counselor Chris Roberts said. “Elissa Whitcomb is an individual that has one of the most remarkable levels of personhood and drive that I have ever seen,” he remarked. “Every time I saw Elissa in high school, she was either finding a way to challenge herself to be bet-

ter or finding a way to make another person’s day even just a little bit brighter. The best way to describe her desire to care for others, is that she sees it as something she is grateful to have such an opportunity. I’ve seen her many times bring joy to the faces of peers and found that Elissa finds genuine joy in lifting the spirits of her community. I know she will continue to do this in the future and have a great positive impact on the people that have the gift of being around her. She has been a trailblazer for our female students, a leader and coach within our ROTC program, an example of professionalism and character each day of her high school career, and a great honor to work with. A truly amazing student and individual.” Whitcomb summed up her time at South Point like this. “I would tell students to get involved,” she says. “There are tons of clubs to take part in. Also, find out what career you want and pursue that dream. There are lots f opportunities to find what suits you, so take advantage of them.” As for herself, Whitcomb can’t wait to don Air Force blue. “I’m really excited about the next phase of my life,” she said. “I’m ready for the opportunities.”

Tyler Southward flourished at Gaston College Tyler Southward was 24 years old when he started at Gaston College in 2018. A native of Saginaw, Michigan, who moved to North Carolina in 2014, Southward had never been an enthusiastic student and had dropped out of high school, but in his early 20s he decided to commit himself to his education and his community. “I was

both determined to succeed and uncertain if I could,” he said. “I wondered if the years that I had not taken school seriously would come back to haunt me.” He will graduate from Gaston College in May 2020 with an Associate in Science degree and with many achievements and accolades to his credit. With his 4.0 GPA, South-

ward was on the President’s List each semester, he was named the Gaston College Arts and Science Student of the Year for 2020, and he also completed the College’s Scholars of Global Distinction program, which prepares students to be culturally competent global citizens in an increasingly global job market. Through the program,

Local students named to Mars Hill University Dean’s List for Spring 2020 Mars Hill University recognizes 382 students named on the Honor Roll of the Academic Dean at the end of the spring 2020 semester. nomic crisis.” The Council of State concurred on this Executive Order with no objections. The Order will aid in efforts to stop the spread of the virus by preventing homelessness due to eviction and ensuring access to essential utilities such as water and power. Though the Order allows for extended windows to pay rent and utility bills, all tenants and customers are still ultimately responsible for making their rent and utility payments. The Order’s evictions moratorium: Is effective immediately and lasts for 3 weeks; Would prevent landlords from initiating summary ejections or other eviction proceedings against a tenant for nonpayment or late payment of rent; Prevents landlords from assessing late fees or other penalties for late or nonpayment; Prevents the accumulation of

additional interest, fees, or other penalties for existing late fees while this Order is in effect; Requires landlords to give tenants a minimum of six months to pay outstanding rent; Requires leases to be modified to disallow evicting tenants for reasons of late or nonpayments; and makes clear that evictions for reasons related to health and safety can take place. The Order’s utility shutoff moratorium: Continues effective immediately and lasts 60 days; Prohibits utility disconnections for all customers; Prohibits billing or collection of late fees, penalties, and other charges for failure to pay; and extends repayment plans at least six months, and sets the default term for repayment to six months for cases when the utility and customer cannot agree on the terms of an extended repayment plan.

Tyler Southward faculty and programs at Gaston College and what can be accomplished here.” The doubts that Southward had regarding his ability to succeed in an academic setting receded with each

successful semester at Gaston College. “I was able to thrive on the support of my professors and peers,” he said. “I learned that community support can enable a person to flourish more than individual effort alone. Along the way, my professors illuminated previously unseen opportunities by expressing confidence in my potential, and my peers helped me learn more effectively by participating in group study sessions.” Southward will attend NC State as a participant in the prestigious Goodnight Scholars Program, which prepares North Carolina’s top STEM talent to become transformational leaders. He will major in Statistics and he plans to go on to earn a Master of Science degree. His career goal is to work as a data analyst in the Research Triangle area.

Governor extends moratorium on utility cut offs and implements moratorium on evictions Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order No. 142 on May 30, 2020 to extend the prohibition of utility shut-offs and implement a moratorium on evictions. “North Carolinians need relief to help make ends meet during the pandemic,” said Governor Cooper. “Extending housing and utility protections will mean more people can stay in their homes and stay safe as we all work to slow the spread of this virus.” “North Carolinians want to pay their rent, but for far too many people – through no fault of their own – that’s just not possible right now,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “We are in unprecedented times that call for unprecedented action. I support Gov. Roy Cooper’s extension of the moratorium on evictions to ensure that people do not face homelessness in the midst of this health and eco-

Southward visited the Netherlands, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, and Estonia. “I wanted to participate in the program because it offered the opportunity to extend my learning beyond the classroom and into the world,” said Southward. “Aside from being a great student in the classroom, Tyler is one of the most inquisitive students we have had, and I always saw him in deep conversation with various faculty members about life, careers, and educational opportunities,” said Brian Bookout, Instructor of History and Sociology and Chair of the Global Imprints Team. “He is an excellent example to current and future students of the possibilities that life holds. Wofford College congratulates more than 200 students who have been awarded scholarships beginning in the Fall 2020 semester. The follow-

Juneteenth celebration is going virtual By Delta Sanders The 2020 Belmont Juneteenth Celebration will be different, to say the least. It is not possible to gather together in Stowe Park. Nevertheless, Elements of Empowerment, Inc., and the City of Belmont changed event plans to create a great celebration. What makes the celebration great? “Virtually everyone can participate! The virtual format extends the event invitation and reach beyond the city and county borders. The Montcross Area Chamber webcam and Facebook will potentially project the celebration events to the world. A celebration may seem out of place, amid a pandemic and social outcries against racism and brutality. Yet, Juneteenth is exactly the celebration for such a time as this. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, specifically the June 19, 1865 reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas. Slavery, racism, and brutality are interrelated. Slavery once seemed impossible to overcome, just as racism and its brutal injusticies and disparities seem today.

Emancipation from physical slavery was achieved through social outcries and civil war. Our collective voices are now stronger and our outcries mightier than any war machine. Generations who have never known Jim Crow march and chant for equality for all. Because of this, we can celebrate with hope that someday racism and brutality will be overcome by true freedom and equality for all. Elements of Empowerment, Inc. is dedicated to fostering cultural awareness, acceptance, and preservation by educating, enriching, and empowering communities through artistic cultural programs, presentations and events. Juneteenth is the very genesis and culmination of this mission. Virtual Belmont Juneteenth Events: Juneteenth Sunday - June 14, 2020 By proclamation, June 14 is designated as Juneteenth Sunday. Congregations are invited to acknowledge Juneteenth during services. Virtual 2K Family & Friends Freedom Walk - June 14 through June 20, 2020 Register and walk together any time during the week, in your own spaces, at your desired times. This is a noncompetitive walk to promote wellness and
