Thelma Farris - a century and counting

Home is where the heart is and for Thelma Skidmore Farris, home has been North Belmont for a century-, that’s right, a century.

Farris came into the world- a very different world than today- on May 23, 1920.

She was the daughter of Carrie and Floyd Skidmore and was the sixth of twelve kids. Her father was a house

painter by trade and her mom worked at the nearby Acme textile mill. The family lived on School St. Thelma attended the old North Belmont school which was located on the same ground as the current North Belmont Elementary. She made it through fourth grade then left to stay at home and help take care of her siblings.

Church has always been a big part of her life. She is a lifelong member of Goshen

Freewill Baptist in North Belmont and still pays her tithes every month.

“I kept the nursery there for over forty years,” she says proudly.

When she was younger, Thelma and some of her friends would ride the P&N train for day trips.

“We would go to Charlotte and look around,” she said. “We always had a good time.”

A local WWII veteran recalled D-Day

On May 25, Memorial Day, we paused to honor the men and women of our nation’s military service. This coming Saturday, June 6,

we mark the 76th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion, D-Day during WWII. This story about Belmont resident the late James Biggerstaff who passed away on July 28th, 2019 blends those two dates into one reflective

memory.

My Opinion: Old photos are priceless

I’m taking welding classes and haven’t burned down the school (yet)

In this office we have an old file cabinet with four drawers packed with treasure.

No, there’s no money or jewels here, at least not the kind that you can spend or wear on your finger or around your neck or dangle from your earlobes, no, the goodies of which I speak are old photographs taken long before the “Digital Age” arrived.

Most are black and white. They were taken with ancient instruments called film cameras.

As some of you old folks recall, before digital cameras all pictures were taken with a device that held film and when you had shot your roll, you took the film to a drugstore and left it and had it developed into pictures and went back later and picked the pictures up.

And no one, I mean no one, ever waited to get home to open the envelope up to see how they turned out, as that was done in the car in the drugstore parking lot where all eyes fell upon the fresh photos and the joy, sadness, excitement, or whatever they depicted was revealed for the first time.

The result of having all those pictures in your house, office, etc. was they were often put into a thing called an album or scrapbook or in our case a file cabinet for viewing as you had a refreshment and leafed through the pages or pictures you could actually hold in your hand.

However, in the case of a newspaper like this one that was operated by a succession of pack rats that didn’t like to throw pictures away (especially Dwight Frady) , the photos piled up faster than they could be run in print and so ended up being crammed in the file cabinet.

I love looking at those pictures. In some cases they are of people that have had their moment of glory and faded from the scene.

In other cases they are of folks obscure and unknown to anyone but the photographer and themselves.

One thing I especially like about looking through our old photos is the change in hair and clothing styles over the years. In the pictures from the 1940s and 1950s, most of the people are nicely dressed in what would be

called a conservative manner. The waistband of pants is up where it belongs not halfway to the knees.

Can I get a witness? Alan Hodge Banner-News Editor The men always wore a hat and not a baseball hat with the logo of chewing tobaccy brand or some such on the front, but a nice fedora hat. The women can be seen wearing cotton dresses or skirts and they all look neat and clean.

Then came the 1970s and the attire seen on folks included such hilarities as polyester leisure suits, white belts, bell bottom britches, tube tops, and shoes (men included) with ‘stacked’ heels and soles.

Our photos also trace hairstyles. The older pics show guys with hair in place via the Lucky Tiger or Brylcreem method, and the women with their coiffures often aided by a Toni home permanent. My mom used the Toni concoction and the aroma was enough to give you a buzz if you got too close when it was being blended up.

Once again I shall pick on the 1970s as a time of hairstyle mayhem (mine was down to the shoulders). Looking at the photos from that era, I see the men with hair blow-dried into a devil may care, whipped crème configuration. As for the girls, the 1970s was the heyday of Big Hair. Achieving Big Hair needed a blow drier, a teasing brush, lots of vigorous stroking of the mane, and gallons of hairspray to hold the cotton candy-like mass in place. At night this atomic bomb mushroom cloud-like bouffant was often contained and preserved by being wrapped in toilet paper in a manner not unlike the way ancient Egyptians prepared folks like Tutankhamun for eternal rest. Mom wore a pair of drawers (clean) on her head.

I know lots of you still have some old photo albums gathering dust. Why don’t you take them out, or even better, find some kids to show them to and let them see what life was like in the Age of Kodak.

One Father’s Day my wife got me a Flux Welder machine. It is an entry level machine for welding. As hard as I tried, I don’t weld; I burn holes into metal.

A friend tried to teach me to use a Mig welder. This is a step up from a Flux Welder.

Again, my gift of burning holes in the metal showed up well.

Needing an instructor, I registered for welding classes at Central Piedmont Community College.

My instructor started us with oxygen/acetylene welding which uses an open flame.

It’s a miracle I haven’t burned down the Harper Campus of CPCC each time I lit the flame. I learned to identify the liquid bubble and how to use it to weld two pieces of metal. I’m getting better each week.

Besides signing up for a welding class, I volunteer at a Classic Car Restoration shop.

The owner, Billy, taught me to use a Mig welder. I took the skills I learned at CPCC with an oxygen/acetylene torch and began to apply it to an electric Mig welder. I was proud of the first four lines of weld I laid on the piece of metal.

Billy turned the metal over to show me if the weld was effective. I could see a blue circle where I had welded and felt good about myself.

Billy wanted more weld on side two of the metal. We increased voltage and adjusted

the speed of the wire but there was no change. Again we increased voltage and began to see a little pile of weld on the other side. More voltage produced more steel on the other side. One final adjustment of the voltage and wire speed and there was equal steel on both sides of the piece of flat metal. It was so different than the first Mig weld I applied where the steel was on side one of the metal but not on side two.

Welding on side one but not on side two does not securely weld two pieces of steel. As Billy explained to me how to adjust voltage and wire speed, it reminded me how I used to build wooden model airplanes. I was notorious for not putting enough glue between two pieces of wood and thought glue, spread across the joint, would secure the two pieces of wood together. It didn’t work. The same was true for welding steel. I was melting two pieces of metal, whether it was with a torch or an electric arc, I had to identify the liquid bubble. Once I created that, I would maneuver it across the metal with the correct amount of heat to join two pieces of metal through their core. If done properly, I would create

a secure weld.

I think the same can be true a b o u t Christianity.

It’s too Tony Marciano easy to apply a thin veneer of faith to the surface of our lives similar to a weld being on the surface without it penetrating to our very core. Just as the weld has to go through both sides of the metal to secure the pieces together, I think Christianity has to go past the surface of our head and penetrate every cell in our being until it comes out our fingertips. When that happens, it changes us from the inside out. It’s real. It’s genuine.

It’s our faith. Rather than believe so we can belong to a group, we believe because it’s in our very being.

I’m having a blast learning welding from two very patient leaders. I’m also enjoying watching God move deeper and deeper into my person.

I’ll be back in two weeks.

“Be Ye Angry, But Sin Not”! … WHAT?!?

It was Tuesday, May 24, 2020, I began my morning with my Bible Scripture Devotional! Next, I turned on the television and started watching “CBS This Morning”. I would witness Gayle King, broadcast journalist, become emotional on air Tuesday morning discussing “two racially charged incidents involving black men that transpired on Monday”.

Quoting from Ms. King, as she speaks to viewers “I am speechless. I am really, really speechless about what we’re seeing on television this morning. It feels to me like open season … and that sometimes it’s not a safe place to be in this country for black men.”

Quoting from an added news source, it was reported that “Ms. King was responding to ‘CBS This Morning’s’ report on the disturbing case involving a white woman in Central Park who was recorded on cell phone video by a black man as she calls in a false accusation to 911 that the man is threatening her life. The video has stirred widespread outrage as it evokes the long history of false accusations against black men that have led to death, imprisonment and other grave consequences for the wrongly accused.”

Let me go further and note. earlier in the broadcast, it shows “CBS This Morning” reporting “on a case unfolding in Minneapolis in which a black man died after being arrested on suspicion of forgery. A video of part of the incident shows the suspect being held down on the street by a police officer who had his knee pressing down on the man’s neck. The man

can be heard on the video clip telling police “I can’t breathe” and pleading for relief. In the video captured by a passerby, other bystanders can be heard urging the police to ease up on the man’s neck.” This man died shortly after arriving at the hospital, Whereas Ms. King was moved to tears and audibly expressed sorrow, I was moved to ANGER, personified! In the midst of my being brought back to remember the Rosewood Massacre (1923); Emmett Till’s murder (1955); Central Park Five (1989); Susan Smith,/falsely accusing black men (1995); Trayvon Martin’s death (2012). Ahmaud Arbery’s death (2020) and, perhaps, so much more up to where we are at this time; I had to ask…HOW LONG, LORD! HOW LONG! In closing, as I was having my car serviced on this past Wednesday, May 26 at a local dealership, I ran across an article titled “This Is Our World Transformed by Human Action, How Will You Respond?” in the magazine titled “Real Leaders Inspire the Future”. I quote: “We are one human race living on one planet. We aspire for the same things: food, water, good health, and, most of all dignity and loving relationships We yearn for opportunity, voice, and resources to develop our potential. We want to raise our children in a safe and healthy environment. We want to experience the earth’s beauty and natural bounty.” By way of prayer, I thank God for restoration!

As you can imagine, living 100 years has given Thelma a unique perspective on things.

Her other transport was a bike.

“I bought myself a bicycle with babysitting money,” she said. “I earned three dollars a week. I rode that bicycle a lot.”

Another interesting tidbit from her life is the fact that she sang on the radio in the 1940s.

By and by, Thelma met her future husband Jack. They were married in 1947 and were together for 47 years. The union produced five kids. Currently, Thelma also has 13 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 27 great great grandchildren.

Even though she had a brief stint working at the Acme, most of Thelma’s life was devoted to being a top-notch homemaker. She especially liked to cook.

“I could cook anything I could get,” she

“Things are a lot different now,” she said. “But we did pretty good back then.”

A cancer survivor, Thelma currently lives with daughter and son in law Sherry and Barry Smith on Cason St.

She gets around a whole lot better than most folks her age and seems content and happy.

“I am satisfied the way I am,” she said. “Life is pretty good!”

positions on Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy.

Not only that, but according to a Chicago Tribune article that appeared later, the Nevada’s Capt. H.A. Yeager had given the order to fire the first shots of the bombardment that preceded the launching of landing craft to the beach, making it possible that Biggerstaff’s turret could have let go the first salvo of D-Day. Here’s what Biggerstaff had to say in an interview shortly before he passed about his Normandy adventure.

“I was 17 years old when I joined the Navy in 1943,” Biggerstaff said. “I was a native of Rutherford County.

My ship, the USS Nevada had ten 14-inch guns. My job in the turret was to load the bags of gunpowder and primer into the breech after the shell was put in. It took 420 pounds of powder to fire each gun. The shells could travel 20 miles and were so big you could see them in the air. The steel on the turrets was a foot thick.

We left England in the middle of the night and crossed the English Channel.

We were told we would be invading France but not exactly

different aspects of our department and city. The City of Mount Holly classification improved from a Class 5 to a Class 2. The new rating will be effective September 1, 2020 and could help to lower insurance premiums.

Commercial, industrial and manufacturing businesses are more likely to be in line for these reductions.

Homeowners and businesses should contact their insurance companies. This possible premium reduction will depend on the insurance carrier.

Nationwide there are only 1,673 “Class 2” fire departments out of 40,355. This puts us in the top two percent in the state among fire departments and in the top four percent in the nation. We give our very best every day and we will keep striving to be even better for our next inspection.”

We stopped the ship 20 miles off the coast of France and at 6am all hell broke loose when we opened fire. The blast from the guns pushed the ship back in the water. Later, as the troops moved inland, we moved to about 10 miles off shore and kept shooting.

We shot until we just had 25 shells left and then went back to England for more.

We returned to Normandy the next day.

I was in the turret most of the time but looked out now and then. I could see planes going over and people jumping out of them. There was a

The beach looked like hell on earth. I’ve never seen anything like it.

We were there for 90 hours and ate C-rations like the soldiers did. Later, our cook made up creamed chipped beef on toast. It’s also known as...well, you know. But it tasted beautiful.”

D-Day wasn’t all the action Biggerstaff and the USS Nevada saw in WWII. “After D-Day we went to New York for rest. Then we went to Norfolk to have the ship’s guns replaced. Then we went through the Panama

Canal and eventually to Pearl Harbor and the South Pacific where we took part in invasions of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guam, Saipan and other islands. We got hit by suicide planes and lost some men.

We had 90 air raids in 30 days and two typhoons. The ship was between Okinawa and Japan when the war ended.”

Talking to Biggerstaff, it was obvious he loved his country.

“It was beautiful to go places and see and do the things I did back then,” he said. “But America is still the best place on earth.”

on a series of short drives first, gradually lengthening time spent in the car. And please be sure to always secure the crate so it won’t slide or shift in the event of a quick stop.

3. Your pet’s travel-feeding schedule should start with a light meal three to four hours prior to departure.

Don’t feed your furry friend in a moving vehicle-even if it is a long drive.

4. Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

5. What in your pet’s traveling kit? In addition to travel papers, food, bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and a pet first-aid kit, pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity.

6. Make sure your pet has a microchip for identification and wears a collar with a tag imprinted with your home address, as well as a temporary travel tag with your cell phone, destination phone number and any other relevant contact information. Canines should wear flat (never choke!) collars, please.

7. Don’t allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window. He could be injured by flying objects. And please keep him in the back seat in

his crate or with a harness attached to a seat buckle.

8. Traveling across state lines? Bring along your pet’s rabies vaccination record, as some states requires this proof at certain interstate crossings. While this generally isn’t a problem, it’s always smart to be on the safe side.

9. When it comes to H2O, we say BYO. Opt for bottled water or tap water stored in plastic jugs. Drinking water from an area he’s not used to could result in tummy upset for your pet.

10. If you travel frequently with your pet, you may want to invest in rubberized floor liners and waterproof seat covers, available at auto product retailers.

Choosing the right pet for your family Welcoming a pet into one’s life can be a rewarding experience. Pets promote compassion and discipline in their owners, and their companionship can be incredibly rewarding.

They also can be helpful tools for teaching children responsibility.

Pets require commitment, patience and financial investment. Potential pet owners also need to understand just what they’re getting into when they decide to bring a pet home.

Certain animals require a greater level of attention than others, and some pets might not be the right fit for all involved. After all, a pet is not a temporary playmate, but a long-term family member who will require considerable love and attention.

Prospective pet owners should consider various factors to help them find the pet that suits their families.

Decide if you want a young pet or prefer an older animal, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages. While puppies and kittens can be attractive, they require extra time and care upon being welcomed into a home, and that can be rough if young children are in the home and not accustomed to pets and their unique behaviors. In such instances, an older established animal may be a better fit, especially if you can devote the time to retraining the animal to your preferences. If you already

have pets, you’ll need to find one that’s compatible with your existing animals.

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation says to carefully consider if you can provide the amount of attention your pet will need. Different species and breeds require various amounts of care. A ferret or hamster may be self-sufficient most of the day, while a boisterous puppy will not be. People who travel frequently or are out of the house most of the day will have to keep this in mind as well.

Affordability is another factor to consider.

Assess whether you have the money necessary to offer shelter, recreation, medical care, food, exercise, and socialization for this particular pet. If you cannot budget for a pet that has a lot of needs, look for one that has relatively inexpensive care requirements, like a fish.

Remember that some animals can live many years, while others have a relatively short life span. Factor this into your decision as well. Once you make the commitment to the pet, it’s unfair to surrender an animal simply because you failed to recognize the time and energy required to take care of it.

Hillbilly pools or Instagram worthy art?

By Allison Bansen I am sure farmers everywhere are rolling their eyes at the new quarantine craze that is blowing up Instagram.

A tank originally designed as a cattle watering trough has become Americas new way to pamper without the expenditure of an in ground pool. These are so popular right now that if you try to hit up Tractor Supply you will be put on a waiting list.

Sorry cattle farmers, millennials may be hurting the supply and demand of these products right now. Commonly called hillbilly pools, these tanks are anything but that. In fact, the cost on a stock tank pool with pump and supplies can run around $1500. I don’t know many hillbillies that think that is cheap.

Stock tank pools are really cool and make for some pretty neat conversations around the neighborhood,

but they aren’t actually new.

Generations before us filled them up on hot summer days as a way to cool off. Unfortunately, their photos didn’t make the paper. Amazing it took more than 50 years to look cool. I am sure those old ranchers are sitting on their front porch rolling their eyes in the back of their heads at the fact that we are now adding pumps, chlorine and blow up swans to these old galvanized tanks.

So why are these galvanized tanks so popular? With school hours looking like they may never be the same again, it is no wonder why parents are searching for a way to entertain through the pandemic. This is surely a good way to do that without risking exposure to Covid-19 in public pools. Sure, they have their problems. With chlorine tablets in the water they do eventually corrode, but it takes a few seasons for that. They also make a

the pump enough and keeping the water crystal blue can be hard if do not have your pool sitting on concrete away from trees and grass. When our southern weather hits one hundred degrees, just place an umbrella over the top and you are in business.

These hillbilly pools can get really fancy. There are even people adding decks to them. Can you believe that?

And by people, I mean me.

Why not bring back a piece of history that in my opinion was absolutely genius. Its going to be a long summer parents so hit up the Tractor Supply. You will not regret it. I promise.

Meditations Don’t stereotype others As a black woman in America, I know what it is like to be categorized and stereotyped. It denies me of my existence and uniqueness. When someone is categorized and stereotyped, it usually comes from persons who have not taken the time to get to know the person as an individual.

What causes us to stereotype another person? It can come from our experiences. If the experience has been negative, we assume everyone in a particular group is the same.

Also, stereotypes are learned thought patterns. We learn from our family, peers, and culture around us. Children may hear comments in their homes, “That’s how those people behave and live.”

Many of us were impacted last week by the cruel death of George Floyd. As a result, I have seen remarks against Law Enforcement across our country. As a black woman, I do not like being categorized or stereotyped.

And, neither do I like to see my brothers and sisters behind the badge stereotyped.

There are many of our officers who are just as angry about what happened last week.

I know countless officers who care significantly about all people in the community they serve. They, too, are angry when they receive a call from someone saying, “There is a suspicious character in my neighborhood.”

When they arrive on the scene, they discover the person lives in the neighborhood and is out walking their dog. They were deemed suspicious because they were black. The person making the call never took the time to get to know their neighbor because they were of different skin color.

No, all blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, whites are not the same. And too, all law enforcement is not the same. Behind the badge are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, grandparents. Behind the badge are men and women with compassion and love for the communities they serve.

How can we reach across the aisle? How can we begin to build bridges to meet?

While engaging in the rap sessions, we have barrier-breaking moments; we develop a safe, open, and diverse environment for all.

Rap sessions see an increase in community engagement with Law Enforcement and citizens working in collaboration. And, it helps citizens and Law Enforcement be proactive instead of reactive.

“For He, Himself is our peace who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation.” Ephesians 2:14 NKJV. Jesus tore down the wall of hostility.

Let us not put the barrier back up between us.

Having conversations in a contained environment helps to build trust and awareness. It is important to begin these conversations now so that when something happens, we can be proactive together rather than reactive against one another.

We cannot make a difference while keeping our distance from each other. We can only make a difference through collaborative efforts. Law enforcement does not have all the solutions, but they have some of the solutions.

We do not have all the answers, but we have some of the answers. So, what would happen if we join bringing what we do have, our gifts, visions, and solutions? We will build a greater community together.

Since she couldn’t have a birthday party, officers on the Gaston County Police Department’s Charlie Squad made her birthday extra special, complete with blue lights and sirens. Riley even spoke with Officer Wilkinson about being a police officer and got to check out her patrol car. Riley especially enjoyed hitting the siren. Officer Rhodes, Ortiz and Moore were also there.

Riley wants to be a police officer when she grows up. She is an amazing little girl.

For as long as I can remember, Henderson Street has been green… and pink… and purple… and sometimes orange… as well as blue, but of all these colors it has been mostly green. Maw Maw spent most of her time planting plants throughout the acre’s worth plot without much regard as to where the mower would consequently need to roam.

Yes, my grandmother was somewhat of what many would call a botanist by hobby, and as many who lived in the village would claim she was exceptionally good at it.

As you would pull into the driveway, you were greeted by bushels of fluorescent bushes all blooming with buds, flowerbeds bursting with color from every petal, and as you made your way to the back porch there were hanging baskets filled with various types of flowers that she cared for on a daily basis. Every summer she grew a vegetable garden which proved to be prosperous each year, full of tomatoes and cucumbers galore and would be more than happy to share with neighbors who would stop by for a visit. It appeared no matter what she planted into a pot or the ground, it would spring to life.

For instance, there was one time where she had an unexpected visit by a state trooper.

She answered the door and asked what the problem was, and after a brief conversation it turned out that one of her flowerbeds had caught the trooper’s eye. As it turns out, it’s illegal to grow poppy flowers in the state of North Carolina (despite them being used as decoration along medians on the interstate, but I digress), and she had a small abundance of them. She never meant harm by the flowers but kept them as ornamentation in her yard. After he left, she took to digging them up right away, but it wasn’t long before she replaced them with something else bright and colorful.

It’s been a little over a decade since her passing and a lot has changed in the house

since then, including the fact that another botanist has taken root on the property. My wife really began getting into plants when we lived in our Shelton Fisher apartment in Dallas, and especially so when we lived on Stowe Street, but the plants never seemed to do very well at that house. Perhaps it was the moisture in the air, the “climate control” in the house, or some other reason, but Kimberly was always concerned about her plants dying while we lived there. And just as I have a “tool problem” every time I go to Lowe’s, the trip isn’t complete when we’re together if we don’t stop by the Garden Center to see if she can’t find a new plant she hasn’t grown yet. Things have seemed a little different since we’ve moved back to Lucia.

For starters, she now has a plant room/ library, where she can give each of her babies the natural light and water they crave.

We now have central air instead of a rickety window unit, held up by a board and a cinder block, which seems to help give them the air quality they need. I also believe that Kimberly is “branching out” so to speak in her choice of plants now that we have our own land to plant on. We not only have begun to take care of certain plants that already existed on the land, but she recently bought some annuals for outside and she NEVER did that in the past.

As I come home each day, I think of all the flowers that were once in the beds that were not so strategically placed and I wonder what her and I can do differently to not only restore it, but make it our own design. We have a game plan ahead of us and I think that with my landscaping and her green thumbs, we can make this yard awesome soon. For now, I’ll learn what I can from the best botanist I know.

As many businesses, churches, and parts of the economy begin to slowly reopen, it is as if we are all starting over. People are resuming parts of their usual daily lives for the first time in many weeks. Each of us began our year with so much that we were planning and looking forward to, and then came the Coronavirus pandemic. Now as we plan to restart life, we find ourselves picking up the pieces of life and starting over.

Ezra 3:8-13 reminds us of when Israel started over. God had placed His people in the Promised Land and gave them everything they needed. However, the people engaged in sin, rebelled against God, and worshipped other gods. God punished them and allowed them to be conquered and led away into captivity by other nations. Even in His wrath and judgment, God was merciful to His people, and in seventy years, He allowed them to go home. King Cyrus, the Persian king, allowed a remnant of Israel to return and rebuild the temple that had been destroyed. About 50,000 of the Israelites returned. Ezra the scribe tells us that they rebuilt the foundation. As it was finished, the people shouted for joy, praising God. The older generation who had seen the former temple, wept. You could hear the

shouting and weeping from a far distance.

As we begin to start over our lives, even as churches, we need to remember that God has a future for us. Just as Rev. Trent Tankin God had a future for the people of Israel, God is not done with us. As Christians, we must always remember God has a plan for us beyond this pandemic. The gospel is unchanged. People still need to hear the good news of Jesus Christ. Together we can realize God’s future for us. The people of Israel worked as one to rebuild the temple, and the city walls, each family, brick by brick.

As people, families, and churches, we can work together to carry out the work of Christ in our communities and towns.

The people wept because of what they had lost, but others shouted and praised God for the future. I know things are not the same right now. We are now in the days of social distancing and even church does not look like it used to. However, God can make it even better. Just as Israel rebuilt the temple and the city of Jerusalem, we can start over too, carrying out God’s work. Just as Israel shouted that day, may it be our cry too, “For He is good, For His mercy endures forever” (Ezra 3:11, NKJV). I hope you are excited to see what God is about to do!

A new deputy attorney has joined County Attorney Jonathan Sink as part of Gaston County Government’s legal team, officials announced today.

County Manager Dr. Kim Eagle said the county hired Courtney Rogers to fill the position of Deputy County Attorney/Senior Staff Attorney and assumed her new role on May 11.

“I am confident that her experience in education and the legal system will serve Gaston County well,” said Dr. Eagle.

As the Deputy County Attorney/Senior Staff Attorney, Rogers will assist Sink in providing legal ad-

vice and guidance to county departments, boards, agencies, and staff in the areas of health, social services, education, and law enforcement, just to name a few. She will also assist in representing the county in legal actions, as well as provide counsel when needed.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity to serve in this capacity and look forward to partnering with the internal stakeholders of Gaston County,” said Rogers.

Prior to joining Gaston County Government, Rogers served as the Assistant City Attorney for the City of Charlotte. She also worked for the Charlotte School of

Law and held several positions with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, including Associate General Counsel and Senior Associate General Counsel.

Originally from South Carolina, Rogers taught at Horry County Schools before moving to the Tar Heel State to study Law. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston, and she received her law degree from the Charlotte School of Law, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Rogers is married and has two children.

Gaston County third confirmed rabies case of 2020 On Wednesday May 27, 2020 at 8:58pm Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement received a call from 140 block Bay Shore Drive, Belmont. The call was in reference to a possible rabid animal. A family dog fought with a raccoon.

Animal Care and Enforcement Specialist investigated the incident. The deceased raccoon was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. On Saturday May 30, 2020 the raccoon specimen tested positive for rabies.

The adult male Labrador retriever on Bay Shore Drive was up to date on his required rabies vaccinations and received a rabies booster shot within 96 hours of the exposure.

Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass in the area of Bay Shore Drive to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify rabies vaccinations for family animals in the area.

Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement also notified Gaston County

Department of Health and Human Services for their regular follow up investigation.

The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement unit stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all of your pet’s health and safety as well as the health and safety of animal owners and community.

This represents the third confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.

YMCA has limited reopening The YMCA in Gaston County learned that gyms and indoor fitness facilities would not be included in North Carolina’s Phase 2 of easing restrictions which began Friday, May 22. Instead, the Y was only able to open the indoor pools at the Stowe and Warlick location and hold outdoor group fitness classes.

“We welcomed members into the facility today for the first time since March.” said Sharon Padgett, CEO of the Gaston County Family YMCA. “We have been working hard to prepare for Warlick Yoga - Instructor Caroline Moon our reopen. We know it is essential for us to reopen as safely and as thoughtfully as possible.”

Serving as the Treasurer of the Gaston College Student Government Association helped Jenny Lopez-Saldivar become a better leader. Lopez-Saldivar will graduate from Gaston College in May and intends to continue her education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Lopez-Saldivar continued, “We became a support

system for one another, and the bonds that we created have helped us grow not only as leaders but as individuals.

I have learned a lot from my peers; they have inspired me to always reach for the stars and beyond.”

At UNCC, Lopez-Saldivar will major in Social Work. After earning her bachelor’s degree, she plans to work toward her master’s in counseling. “I would love to work with high school or college students to help them navigate through difficult times,” she said. “I want to be able to provide information and support for people who may need someone to encourage them.”

Board of Education to appoint Gaston College trustee The Gaston County Board of Education is conducting the process to select an appointee for the Gaston College Board of Trustees.

South Point Spring Sports Seniors highlight This is the fifth in a series of articles highlighting the South Point High spring sports seniors. This article focuses on the seniors on the varsity baseball team. Coach Jason Lineberger writes: Jose Mota is the first player we’ve ever had to make the team for the first time as a senior. Jose is a hard worker, an energy giver, and a great teammate. His attitude and effort made us better.

Brian Mellette is the only three year starter we had.

Brian had a great career at South Point. He was consistent and reliable. He rarely missed any offseason workouts in his four years. Brian was voted captain by his teammates.

Andrew Shell is cool under pressure. Andrew never got rattled when things didn’t go his way. We were counting on him to deliver a bunch of clutch hits this spring. He has a great attitude regardless of the circumstances.

Grayson Thomas was our most experienced pitcher.

Grayson was going to be our go-to guy on the mound. He is a gritty and crafty pitcher who knows how to get people out despite not being the biggest

Jose Mota or hardest throwing pitcher.

Andrew Warren is a great two sport athlete. Andrew is big, strong, and fast. He sustained an arm injury wrestling, and didn’t get to play at all. A healthy Andrew would have been one of our best players. However, he came to practice and games and helped the team anyway he could. Andrew is a high character player who was always coachable and willing to help.

As a whole these these five seniors left the program better than they found, and they will all be missed greatly. They have shown the work ethic, perseverance, and toughness to be successful regardless of what the pandemic or any other obstacle is thrown at them.

Now that Crowders Mountain State Park has reopened, you can add to your visit there by taking advantage of a scenic drive in that area.

The N.C. Department of Transportation has designated 51 scenic byways to give visitors and residents a chance to experience North Carolina’s history, geography and culture, while also raising awareness for the protection and preservation of these treasures. Byways are carefully selected to portray the diverse beauty and culture of the Tar Heel State and provide travelers with safe and interesting “off the beaten path” travel routes.

These byways are intended as an alternative to the faster-paced traffic and commercial areas found along our state’s major highways and interstates.

Following the byways, motorists will see some of North Carolina’s most breathtaking scenery, from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the west to the fertile plains of the Piedmont to the crystal blue shore of our coast.

The Crowders Mountain Drive takes motorists by Crowders and Kings mountains in Gaston and Cleveland counties. The scenery you can enjoy from the road is in springtime mode.

To begin following the byway, take Exit 10 from I-85 and follow U.S. 29/74

to the community of Mountain View.

Exit onto Sparrow Springs Road (S.R. 1125), where the route begins. Follow Sparrow Springs Road and turn right onto Pinnacle Road (S.R. 1104) as they wind around the base of Crowders and Kings mountains. Crowders Mountain, named for a local settler, is one of the peaks in the Kings Mountain Range.

The mountain range is about three miles long, extending from the southern end of Gaston and Cleveland counties in North Carolina into York County, S.C. The highest peak, called the Pinnacle, marks the northern end of the range. Its weathered granite cap, called a monadnock, stands above the other peaks as a king stands above his people.

Continue on Sparrow Springs Road as it veers right into the area around the state park entrance, then follow the byway for two miles, and then right again onto Pinnacle Road.

Formed in 1841, Cleveland County was named for Benjamin Cleveland, a hero at the Battle of Kings Mountain during the Revolutionary War. Kings Mountain National Millitary Park, located in South Carolina, is the site of that decisive British defeat in 1780. The valley is also

Belmont Abbey third in Joby Hawn Cup Belmont Abbey has earned its best finish in the Conference Carolinas’ Joby Hawn Cup standings in at least 14 years, placing third for overall athletic success, the league office announced.

Mount Olive won the competition, followed by Emmanuel.

Crusader teams garnered an all-time high score of 72.1 percent, earning 72.5 points out of a possible 102.

Detailed standings back to 2006-07 show a previous best of 63.1 percent in 201718 with another third-place finish back in 2008-09. Belmont Abbey has finished first twice -- back-to-back in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
