Good news for great people!
Belmont’s oldest piece of public art is a treasure by Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Belmont has been making great strides in the area of public art, but there’s one piece that predates all the others by a wide margin. Long before Belmont’s City Hall became the center of the town’s municipal government, it was a U.S. Post Office, constructed in 1938. In that building is a reminder of those days when the federal government’s New Deal was in full swing in the form of a mural entitled “Major William Chronicle and His South Fork Boys”.
Many thousands of people over the years have seen the mural, but not that many know about the artist, Peter DeAnna, who painted it, how he went about his work in Belmont in 1940, and the fact that the mural as folks see it today was not his first choice of theme. DeAnna was one of a small army of artists that the Works Projects Administration (WPA) sent out across the land during the Great Depression to create public art, perform music, and take photos of everything from poor folks to national park
vistas. Overall, from 1934 to 1943, over 1,300 murals and 300 sculptures were commissioned by the federal government nationwide. Artwork for post offices was supposed to reflect the heritage or history of the town where it was located. Most of the post office murals were funded by the Section of Fine Arts under the Treasury Department. The Belmont Post Office mural was DeAnna’s first paying art job. A native of Uniontown, Penn., DeAnna had grown up in Washington, See ART, Page 4

Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County holds groundbreakings Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County held a groundbreaking ceremony in Stanley on Sunday, August 11, 2019 for the 120th house it will build, and which will be the home of the Jackson family when completed. The Jackson family – Shana, along with her children Brooklyn, age 13, and Tykailen, age 9, were joined by family and friends, along with Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County board members Rev. Claude T. Williams, Patricia Franks, Pastor Ray Hardee, Rev. Ken Alexander, Andy Ratchford, executive director Kay Peninger, and community leaders Stanley Mayor Steve Denton and Kiser Elementary School Assistant Principal Kathi Withers. Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County will begin
construction in upcoming weeks and expects that the house will be completed by Thanksgiving. Executive Director Kay Peninger said in her welcome, “This Habitat house represents our goal of helping families achieve stability, safety, and security through shelter. The Jackson family will have a decent, affordable home where they can focus on their family, where the children can play, where they can celebrate family milestones and traditions, and continue to achieve their dreams for the future.” Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County partnered with United in Action of Stanley Churches to welcome the Jackson family to the Stanley community. The house that will be built at 408
N. Mauney Avenue in Stanley will be the first home that Habitat has built in this community. Cesar Perez, Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County board member and chair of the Homeowner Services committee, says “this home represents the hard work the Jackson family has invested in taking positive steps for their family and their goals for the future. Research has shown that homeownership benefits families by reducing stress and that children who live in a stable home achieve more in school.” Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County also recently broke ground for a new home See HABITAT, Page 4

TODAY’S QUOTE: “Love is unselfishly choosing for another’s highest good.” - C.S. Lewis
What’s on your pole?
My driveway wasn’t sinking, it was rising
I was riding around the other day and could not help but notice for the umpteenth time how many flag poles had their pennants flying at half-staff. One upon a time you, who have lived long enough to recollect civility, might only have seen the “America” flag, or any others, only hitched halfway up the post they flew from rarely and seldom. But that was then and this is now and seeing flags halfway there is the new, and sad, norm. There’s a 20-foot-tall flagpole in front of our cabin and from it has flown many a varied type of flag. Right now, there’s a Blackbeard the Pirate flag on the pole. What a welcoming rectangle of nylon it is with a black background, devilish skeleton jabbing a pitchfork into a heart dripping blood. This is one of my favorites. Another flag we fly is the flag of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee. Sharon has a Cherokee ancestor and we fly it to honor both the great great grandmother and the tribe in general. Another flag you might see on our pole is from the nation of Italy. I fly this one on Sundays when Moto GP motorcycle racing is broadcast on TV from Europe and my favorite rider, Valentino Rossi, is at the front of the pack. Uh-oh for Vale..he 40 years old now and like Richard Petty and Dale E. ever dawg has its day so now the Italian flag is gathering dust and soon Valentino will have to hang his leather britches up. Ok, here’s another flag you might see on the pole- Stars and Stripes but the stars seem lately to be coming out of the eyes of folks getting beat on or shot and the stripes are the pattern on the jumpsuits the perpetrators too often avoid. Now we come to some of the most colorful flags I have been known to fly.
I have a problem with my driveway. One of the concrete slabs has sunk. I assumed with Hurricane Florence this past Fall, the extra amount of rain caused it to sink. I got closer to the slab and noticed that the material that was installed between the two adjacent slabs was gone. I figured that since it was missing, the water seeped between the two slabs, causing one to sink. I knew I had to fix it. I picked up 10 tubes of caulk and proceeded to repair all the cracks between the slabs in my driveway. It was a bigger project than I imagined, so I only put down four tubes of caulk. A few weeks later, when it was really, really hot, I decided to finish the job. This time I didn’t do it from the position of sitting on a bench. Rather, I was on my knees, squeezing the caulk gun, smoothing it out and moving onto the next section. As I got close to the slab that sunk, I noticed that there was something in the grass. It was brown, round and long. In fact, there were two of them approaching the slab. It looked like (but am grateful it wasn’t) a snake. As I got closer, I realized they were tree roots. They had come from a tree a few feet away. They ran under the grass, then surfaced, and went under the
My Opinion: A blue background with one a single white starBonnie Blue Flag. A red, swallowAlan Hodge tail one with white Banner-News Editor palmetto tree and crescent moon- First flown over Charleston Customs House April, 1861. One with the stars arranged in an “A” (for Ark of the Covenant) and two red and one white stripe- Robert E. Lee HQ flag. One with a red snake on yellow background and words “Don’t Tread On Me”Gadsen Flag. One with yellow snake on red and white stripes words “Don’t Tread On Me”- Gadsen Flag variant. (We are big into Don’t Tread On Me in our house.) Here’s another one sometimes fly on anniversary Battle of Gettsburg and Fredericksburg- the Irish Brigade battle flag… during the America War Between the States, five regiments were raised in Pennsylvania to fight for the Union Army. Five regiments formed a Brigade. Since nearly all the soldiers were Irish immigrants..well, you get it. The Irish Brigade flag is emerald green background with a harp in the foreground with a cloud above the harp and overall it’s a very lovely flag in a brave tragic Irish and Scots Irish sort of way. So, what do flags represent? Moods, majesty, politics, political problems, revolutions, resolve, patriots, victory, defeat, nationalism, nitwits, horror, happiness, but always, always, hope. So, what’s on you pole?
concrete slab that was higher. This didn’t make sense. I was convinced the higher concrete slab hadn’t moved and the sinking slab, well, had sunk. I was wrong. I looked closer and the roots had gone under the higher slab. Over the course of years, these two roots were lifting-up the higher slab. My driveway wasn’t sinking. Rather, it was rising. Sometimes in our life, we look at what we were doing and attempt to address the surface problem without looking at the root cause (no pun intended). For example, we spend $800 on a large screen TV that we can’t afford. We look at the symptom without examining what is really driving us to do what we just did. Perhaps we have always felt powerless and so putting down that credit card to purchase something we can’t afford moves us from being powerless to powerful. We feel good about ourselves for a few moments while we prove to the cashier, we are not the powerless person others think we are. We have no ability to pay off the credit
card bill. Why did we do Tony Marciano that? Let’s peel back the layers of the onion a little further. Maybe there was a time in our life when we were bullied. We couldn’t stop the abuser. We were little and the bully was big. We were young and didn’t know how to stand up for ourselves. Years later, we continue to define ourselves as powerless and do irresponsible things to prove we are not. It’s easier to deal with the symptom rather than the root cause. I put down another six tubes of caulk thinking I had taken care of the problem. That wasn’t the case. One Saturday, I cut down the tree. I made a V cut into the tree, attempting to cut it down. It still wouldn’t move. It was only when I did the back cut did it come down. The same is true in our life. The hard part is figuring the root cause of why we do what we do. Then we have to confront it or “cut it at the root” so it doesn’t trip us up.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
What’s in Your Hand? Recently, while gassing my Honda, another couple in a very old model car, drove up and parked along the station curb. The husband kept the car running while his wife got out clutching a few dollars, and went inside. A few minutes later she came back out, not with some useful food or even harmful cigarettes, but with a few lottery tickets. I don’t know about you readers but when I watch events unfold I try to imagine the story behind it. In this case my stomach was turning while I considered the astronomical mathematical odds against their winning and, from their body language those few dollars were a precious expenditure for them. Then my mind continued its’ calculations as I considered an untold number of people spending their hard earned dollars on these “lady luck” gambles too. What is the impact on their lives when their hopes are dashed over and over and over? What is the impact on our country when all this money doesn’t really make it into an “education” fund; where our legislators, trying to squeeze an economic balloon to build a budget, simply stop funding education from their normal budget and make it seem like the lottery is suddenly our educational friend? What is the impact too on so much disillusionment? Does it cause
people to give up working and continue to bet on weekly improbabilities? Does it compound anxiety and depression so our medical and insurance services are spiked or overwhelmed? Can’t we place some of our suspicions on the lottery doorstep for rises in alcoholism, illegal drug use and exponential increases in Xanax and Valium prescriptions? I strongly suspect many precious families simply want to escape nagging pain in their lives and maybe want to experience what the “haves” lives are like. Hey, along these lines have you ever filled out the paperwork required for the Publisher’s Clearing House? It’s a lot and it’s tricky and it is bent on selling you magazines they know you will never read. Now PC hawkers are trying to sell it as a realistic mechanism for leaving your children a legacy; how absolutely sad! In contrast to all this waste, we do hear voices of reason. Even an army slogan talks about “being all you can be,” through education, persistence, and hard work. In the bible, we are taught a lot about proper stewardship; using our resources wisely; and being content with our path in life. And born again believers get to rely on the Lord for guidance, open doors and His provision. Nowhere
in scripture are we taught to sit back waiting for a gamble to materialize. Dennis Siracusa In fact, the bible teaches if we won’t work when we can, then we shouldn’t expect to get to eat our next meal. 2 Thessalonians 3:10. And yet all of this begs the question, “how did gambling come to hold such sway in our lives?” Evolutionists may say it is simply harmless fun but you and I know better. We see the result of hopes repeatedly dashed filling our news every night. No, God created us to enjoy life with Him in the Garden of Eden but Satan spoiled that for all of us. Now, in order to get from point A to B properly, we must work hard. And God wants us to rely on Him and use what is in our hand like Moses did. Exodus 4:2. In John 14:6 Jesus declared to his disciples “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.” In that sweeping statement the whole of creation became clearer and within that, everything we need and yearn for; every pain we endure and question we ask, is met, bearable and understandable in Jesus Christ Our Lord.

ART From Page 1 D.C., and received “formal” art training of sorts at the Washington Boys Club. A natural talent, DeAnna won first prize at a local art show at age sixteen for a work entitled “China Boy.” According to the book “New Deal Art in N.C.” by Anita Price Davis, DeAnna came to Belmont in June 1940 to start his project when he was just 19 years old. While he was in town, he wrote letters to WPA Art Administrator Edward Rowan describing what he was doing. “This past week I have been working from scaffold,” he penned. “The white lead adhesive has caught hold quite well. Work is slowly nearing completion. I am striving for more quality of paint texture. Also revising drawing in several places as
you suggested. I assure you I am giving it the best in me.” The phrase “revising drawing in several places” is likely a reference to changes DeAnna was told to make to his original idea of having the mural show a Native American encampment with women tanning hides and hauling grain near a hut. The first plan also featured the Indian men planting corn with one brave holding a bow and standing with his bare backside turned towards the viewer. In the final painting as it appears today, the hut became a tent, and the Indians were transformed into the South Fork Boys lounging around a campfire in October 1780 prior to marching to Kings Mountain to take part in the upcoming battle
“Battle of Kings Mountain” by Veronica Burkhard. there. The white horse in the current version is where the bare-backed bowman would have stood. DeAnna was paid $730 for his labors in Belmont and went on to paint another mural in Maryland. When World War II came, he enlisted and served as a military artist. Later, he went to work for the Smithsonian Institution and painted many of the
works seen in the National Air and Space Museum there. He retired in 1979 and died in 1980 at age 59 of cancer. DeAnna’s painting technique has been characterized as “ simple, calm, a little rough, but daringly old-fashioned. He also can be delicately precise when he wants to.” These words describe the Belmont painting quite well. In 2006, DeAnna’s work
was freshened up at a cost of around $6,000- eight times what he was paid to do it in the first place. More New Deal art in our area • Gastonia, NC Post Office “Cotton Field and Spinning Mill” – oil on canvas by Francis Speight (1938). • Lincolnton, NC Post Office “Threshing Grain” – oil

They will be residing in a five bedroom Habitat home, along with Demetria’s son Omarri, Mary’s granddaughter Ty’Asia and Ty’Asia’s new son, Santana.. Mary and Demetria have both experienced hardships within the past few years, which has lead them to find home ownership with Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County. Mary’s other daughter suddenly passed and Mary was left to care and take custody of her grandson and granddaughter. Demetria and Mary became dependent on each other for support and guidance, which led them to apply for the home ownership program together. Their apartment has many windows that do not open, allowing for little circulation of air. The HVAC system in their apartment does not work properly, creating high electric bills. Demetria works at Sam’s Club and for Gaston County Schools. Together, Mary and Demetria worked 500 sweat equity hours, attended financial education classes, and

Habitat Gaston builds simple, decent housing with help from volunteer labor, the “sweat equity” of our partner families, and community investment of money and materials. Following completion of partnership commitments (an extensive home ownership and financial planning education program, sweat equity hours, collection debt repayment, and payment of closing costs), partner families purchase their homes with no

Thread Trail bridge dedicated In late July the dedication of the Kilby Elkins Memorial Bridge along the South Fork Trail near McAdenville took place. Thanks to the McAdenville Woman’s Club for their generous financial contribution that made this bridge possible. Over 40 people attended the event. This bridge is on the trail in McAdenville which is on Dickson Drive. Until the construction of the bridge, visitors had to carefully cross over slick rocks and a small incline to continue on the trail. The Woman’s Club had voted to fund this bridge during 2018 when Susan Elkins was the club president. Her daughter Kilby passed away on August 13, 2018 and the club voted to do this in her memory. We live in a social media age. Many of us spend a lot of time on some social platform. We often find ourselves sharing all types of things. We share pictures, quotes, Bible verses, and other things that are important to us. It is easy to click on the share icon of a social media site. However, it is not so easy often, to share Jesus Christ. We often find it difficult to share Jesus, yet as believers, that is exactly what we are called by Jesus to do. We are to share, not simply tell of Jesus, but to share what He has done, and what He is doing in our lives, with someone who needs to hear. Acts 8:26-39 records one of the greatest examples of sharing Jesus in the Bible. One day Philip, a faithful follower of Jesus, was sent by God from Jerusalem to Gaza. As he headed south, he saw a man sitting in a chariot, reading. This man was an Ethiopian from the court of Candace, the queen of Ethiopia. As Philip observed this man reading, the Holy Spirit told Philip to go over to the chariot. As he approached, he noticed the man was reading from the prophet Isaiah. He asked him if he understood what he read. The Ethiopian noted that he could not, unless someone guided him. The man asked Philip if the prophet was writing of himself, or some
other man. At that point, Philip began to share Jesus with him. As they traveled, they passed by some water. The Ethiopian man asked Philip, Rev. Trent Tankin “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” (Acts 8:36, NKJV) Philip told him if he believed with all of his heart, he could. The man then confessed Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and Philip baptized him. I am sure Philip did not understand why God sent him down the road that day, yet God had a plan for him to share Jesus with this man. The Ethiopian man sat waiting for someone to help him know Jesus. We have a world around us with people waiting for us to share Jesus with them. The Holy Spirit sent Philip over to the man. Who is the Holy Spirit sending you to today? Each of us can think of one person in our lives that needs Jesus. Whether a family member, or even someone who dislikes us, we know many people in need of Jesus Christ. Whomever that person is that you know, who is lost, will you be faithful to share Jesus with them? Had Philip not shared, the Ethiopian man would have remained lost. Many around us will remain lost if we will not share. As you go through life this week, encountering so many people, take the opportunity to share, share Jesus!

Julia Avenue receives traffic calming At the Special Meeting held on June 17, 2019 the Belmont City Council voted to implement a traffic calming plan for Julia Avenue. This street and surrounding area has had a long history of traffic issues including, but not limited to speeding and vehicle accidents. At this meeting the Chief of Police and Public Works Director expressed vehicular safety concerns with adding speed tables to this road due to
the topography and the lack of curb and gutter. The first steps of the approved plan included the installation of additional signage including speed limit and stop signs, a solar powered digital speed indicator, continued police enforcement efforts, and re-striping of the lines, additional stop bars at stop sign locations, and stop sign rumble strips on the road. This approval also included a requirement of status reports
to be given to the council on a monthly basis. If the results of the first phase of this plan are found to be insufficient,
City Council has authorized and set aside funding for the installation of speed tables. City of Belmont story/photos

A new chapter begins for East Gaston football By John Wilson
“In our program, we want to instill a work ethic,” Lippard said. “A blue-collar physical approach with discipline.”
John.bannernews@gmail.com
Things did not go well for the East Gaston Warriors in 2018. The team failed to win a game and recorded one of its worst seasons ever. At the end of the year, the school parted ways with longtime head coach Sean Joyce. In the off-season, the Warriors hired Jason Lippard to take over as the new East Gaston head coach. Lippard has been tasked with changing the culture of East Gaston football. He’s got a lot of work to do. Lippard’s resume includes head coaching stints at Brevard, North Stokes, and North East Guilford. Before taking the reins at EG Lippard was the offensive coordinator at West Iredell. To turn things around, Lippard hopes to establish a system at East Gaston. Coach Lippard intends to establish a culture that stresses continuity and accountability.
Offense It’s all about the system East Gaston will scrap the spread offense they have used over the last few years and employ the Wing-T. The classic Wing-T has the quarterback taking the snaps from under center. In the skill positions, the Wing-T employs a tailback, fullback, wingback, wide receiver and tight end. The Wing-T is a popular offense in many high school and small college programs. While the offense is not complicated it gives the Warriors room to grow. At quarterback, the Warriors have a three-way competition between sophomore Riley Dunlap and seniors Austin Galyan and Mason Price. At running back EG is hoping to develop players that “fit
the system.” In East Gaston’s version of the offense the staff is looking for a fullback that is thicker and a physical player. The Warriors are looking for a tailback that is shifty and yet physical. As for the wing-back, coach Lippard had traits he is looking for there as well. “We are looking for a kid that can block,” coach Lippard, “But when we run our counters and reverses he needs to be able to go the distance.” Lippard believes that he has that kind of talent on the roster. At fullback look for 5’11” 185-pound sophomore Jaxon Cogdill to get the nod. At tailback, the Warriors will go with KJ Dagout. Dagout is a true athlete who should find his niche in this system. The wingbacks will be Jesse Baldwin and Mason Price. Rounding out the offensive backfield will be utility player Shane Goins. See EAST GASTON, Page 3

EAST GASTON From Page 2 Goins has the ability to line up at tailback in wingback. The Warriors wide receivers are a capable group of athletes with good hands. This group will also be counted on to block. Lining up at wideout this year will be Jake Thompson and Abel Alvarez. Also, look for Mason Price to line up at wide receiver in certain situations. Like the wide receivers, the East Gaston tight ends will be asked to block. The Warriors want their tight ends to be physical players that can set the edge. Looking to take on that role this year will be seniors Tyson Ensley and Ethan Woodward As stated earlier, coach Lippard wants to establish a blue-collar work ethic. It looks like the EG offensive line fits the bill. The
Warriors line is a gritty bunch of blue-collar players. Senior center Nathan Medici leads the group. At left guard will be senior Carson Clemmer, and at left tackle will be senior Chase Hart. The right side of the line will be held on by a pair of sophomores. It looks like Adam Massey will get the start at right guard while Josh Lucas will line up at right tackle. Defense The 4-3 The Warriors will employ a 4-3 package this year. The defense will be called by defensive coordinator Bo Smith. The Warriors goal in 2019 is to be fundamentally sound. In EG’s 4-3 the defense will stress gap control Depending on who they’re going up against look for East
Gaston to tweak the defense from week to week. However, for the most part, the Warriors will stick with their 4-3 package. East Gaston defensive line is a physical group of aggressive players. At nose tackle sophomore Josiah Lucas will get the start. “He’s young but aggressive with a high ceiling, coach Lippard said of Lucas. At defensive tackle will be junior Jeremiah Harris. Harris is credited with being among the most aggressive players on the team. He is also the strongest player on the team. The Warriors defensive end slots will be decided after an open competition. Senior Ethan Woodward and junior Tobias Newsome will compete for the strong end slot. The weak end slot will feature a battle between senior Carson Clemmer and junior Zach Lavergne. EAST GASTON From Page 3 The East Gaston defensive backfield will feature an experienced group of players. The safety spots will be manned by a pair of seniors. All-Conference standout KJ Dagout will man one spot while James Huckle will line up at the other. East Gaston cornerbacks will be Abel Alvarez, Jake Thomas, and Shane Goins. In the special team’s department, senior Carter Beck will handle the kicking duties. Punts will be handled by Austin Galyan. KJ Dagout and Shane Goins will handle the return duties. Predictions No one can expect East Gaston to make a miraculous turn around in just one season. East Gaston is in a rebuilding process. It will take
time for the Warriors to establish a system and to develop players. As far as development goes, coach Lippard seems to be one step ahead of the curve. Lippard wants to see players developed at the youth level all the way up to high school. Coach Lippard believes that by having a feeder system the Warriors will have players that already know the system before they get to high school. One of the schools that end up sending students to East Gaston is Stanley Middle. The staff at Stanley Middle is running the Wing-T and are open to working with Coach Lippard. “They were very receptive,” Lippard added. “I’m grateful for that.” So far coach Lippard says
that he’s received positive feedback from the players and the community. “We’ve received a great reception from the community,” Lippard said. “We want to put a product on the field that the community can be proud of and can support.” Many times when a team starts in a new direction the team changes uniforms and sometimes even logos. A fresh start, a rebranding of sorts. If people are looking for that from East Gaston this year they may be disappointed. Lippard wants results. He isn’t looking for window dressing. “Change isn’t something you wear,” Lippard noted. That final statement puts things in context. If that type of attitude takes root then EG may just have the beginnings of something special. The Warriors open the season on August 23 with a home game against North Gaston.

Raptors looking to make a push in 2019 by John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
2018 was a challenging year for the Mountain Island Charter Raptors. MI went into the year with very high hopes, unfortunately, they were met with a rash of injuries that nearly crippled their season. Early in the year the Raptors lost starting quarterback and Stanford signee, Marcus Graham. After Graham went down the injuries continued to mount. Despite the hurdles, MI recovered enough to earn a playoff spot. The Raptors were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs by Swain County. MI ended the 2018 campaign with a solid 7-5 record. All things considered, the Raptors had a lot to be proud of in 2018. “I’m not really disappointed in last year,” head coach Robert Washington said of 2018. The Raptors lost some key starters to graduation such as Graham, lineman Landon Reel, wide receiver/DB Levontae Kennedy, and cornerback Bryson Howell. The losses, while important, are unlikely to slow MI down. It looks like the Raptors will go into 2019 on some pretty solid ground. Offense The shotgun spread Mountain Island will utilize its version of the spread offense. The Raptors hope to employ a quick tempo, yet balanced attack. The Raptors are looking for a 50/50 pass-run ratio. The offense will be called by offensive coordinator Joshua Crowell. The Raptors have an open competition going on for quarterback. Kobe Creemer and Demetrius Washington are both vying for the slot. Both players bring different traits to the table. Creemer is a dynamic impact player while Washington is a talented player with a smooth mannerism about him. Both quarterbacks are capable of running and throwing the ball. The Mountain Island running backs feature a pair of power bruisers. The backs are led by senior running back Elijah Burris. Burris is a D1 prospect who signed with Carolina last year and is a four-year starter. At 5 foot 9 and 210-pounds Burris is a talented player who possesses speed and power. He is more than capable of carrying the load. Last year Burris ran for over 2,800 yards from scrimmage. He was among the top 25 performers nationally in 2018.
Last year Burris had eight games where he ran for over 200 plus yards. Spelling Burris will be sophomore Markel McKinney. McKinney is a 6-foot 205-pound power back. At times the Raptors will line Burris and McKinney up in the backfield. The duo has been given the nickname “Thunder and Thunder” by the coaching staff. The Mountain Island receivers are an experienced group of long and rangy athletes. In the Raptors version of the spread offense, look for MI to employ at least three receivers. Lining up at wideout for Mountain Island this year will be Darryl Johnson, Jordan Marshall, Jaden Robinson, Gabe Stevenson, and Trae Nickelson The offensive line looks to be an experienced group. The O-line will feature athletic players that are more fast than big. “I think this will be our best offensive line,” coach Washington added. The top lineman are tackles Garret McGinnis and Myles Perry along with guard Josh McGrew. Assistant offensive line coach Chris Hawk said the other line spots were determined after an open competition. “At center, we have Bunmi Abudu,” Hawk said. “And the other guard is Ethan Nowlin. They won the competition.” The Mountain Island offense has some talent. The coaching staff believes that the additional talent will allow Burris to do even more damage then he did last season. “They won’t be able to load the box on Burris,” coach Washington added. Defense A 4-3 designed to not give up the big play The Raptors will employ a 4-3 scheme this year. The standard 4-3 is historically a solid system designed to provide a team with a “base defense” they can run on first and second down. In MI’s version of the 4-3 the Raptors will adopt a bend but don’t break mentality. The “bend don’t break” philosophy stresses the need to avoid giving up the big play. The defense will be called by defensive coordinator Antico Dalton The Raptors defensive line will feature players that are big inside and fast on the edges. The coaching staff believes this year’s defensive linemen are athletic and optimistic.
The line will be led by Christian Sellers and Josh West. “Christian returns after a 10 sack junior year,” coach Washington said. “I think he provides a ton of speed off the edge.” The MI linebackers are a fast and athletic group of players. The starters will be Gabe Stephens, Brandon Jones, and Jaden Fisher. “Gabe Stephens returns as our team-leading tackler as a sophomore,” Washington said. “I believe he will have a breakout year.” Jaden Fisher is described as a high IQ athlete while Brandon Jones is credited with being a tough hard noise athlete that is looking to lead this group. The Raptors defensive backfield will consist of players that can cover a lot of space. “I believe they will be flying all over the field,” coach Washington said. Lining up for the Raptors will be Omari

Philyaw, Christian Hunter, Jaden Robinson, Durrell Johnson, Chase Marsh, and Jordan Marshall. The Raptors will have some veterans lining up in the defensive backfield this year for sure. “We have an experienced group here that will be fast,” Washington added. Mountain Island will go into the season with a solid special teams squad. The Raptors’ special teams coach will be Jerry Baker. Senior Todd Pledger will handle the kicking while Jacob Laughlin will handle the punting. Pledger is a solid player that the coaching staff thinks can deliver. “I believe Todd Pledger is one of the best kickers in the country,” Washington stated. “He has a big leg and has really developed since last year.” For his part, Laughlin adds a unique dynamic to the mix. RAPTORS From page 6 “Jacob Laughlin is one of the school’s best athletes,” coach Washington explained. “He’s a soccer player that is playing football for the first time in high school. He is also the anchor leg of our 4x400 meter relay 1A state championship team.” Trae Nickelson will handle the return duties for the Raptors Final Summary
The Raptors line up in the Piedmont 1A. The Southern Piedmont Conference is a blended conference featuring public schools, charters schools, and technical schools. The competition can be intense, and at times inconsistent. One thing is for sure. It’s never boring. “I think we have one of the best 1A conferences in the area,” Washington said. Coach Washington is looking at this season prepared for the long haul. “It will be a game at a time approach,” Washington stressed. “We will not get caught looking ahead on the schedule. It’s one day, practice and one game

South Point should be ready for 2019 By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
The South Point Red Raiders finished 2018 with a 9-4 record. The season ended with a second-round 28-20 loss to Hibriten. The Red Raiders have a lot of holes they need to fill with the graduation of standouts such as quarterback Keaton Hale, linebacker Tanner Canterbury and all-state tackle Larry Dowdy. In all, South Point lost close to 10 starters to graduation. With that said, just because the Red Raiders have holes to fill doesn’t mean that they’re not without talent. South Point has a well-established system. You won’t hear the Red Raiders say they are rebuilding. The Red Raiders JV system is well-coached. South Point simply restocks and reloads for the next year. Going into the season head coach Adam Hodge feels pretty good about how the team looks at this stage. “I like the energy and enthusiasm,” Hodge said. “The focus is there. They practice hard, but we do have work to do.”
Offense The triple-option Redbone As it has been for many years the Red Raiders will be running their triple-option Redbone offense. Establishing a run game is what South Point is all about. The Red Raiders will be up front about it. Every time they line up they intend to pound the ball. South Point will pound the ball again and again until the defense cracks or makes a mistake. However, over the last few years, South Point went to the air frequently as the Red Raiders developed a very potent passing attack. This year look for South Point to focus extensively on the run. Calling the plays will be second-year offensive coordinator Josh Justice. As of press time, the quarterback situation was not yet settled, but look for junior Javus Davis to get the nod. At 5’7” and 125 pounds. Davis is a small but tough player. “He works hard in the weight room,” coach Hodge said of Davis. “He’s not big, but he can run. He’s fast.” Also getting work at the quarterback spot are senior Ray Grier and Will Reinhart. South Point is working other players at quarterback in an effort to develop depth. South Point will want whoever their quarterback is to get the ball to the playmakers. One such player is All-Conference wide receiver, Ray Grier. The coaching staff knows that they have a big weapon in Grier. “We have a good receiver in Ray Grier,” Hodge said. “We

just need to get it to him.” Of course, Grier is not the only weapon the Red Raiders have. Another offense standout is fullback Naseem Jones. Jones came up from the JV program last year and churned out 1600 yards for the Red Raiders. In 2018 Jones proved that he is a durable back who can get the job done. “We’re expecting him to have a good year,” coach Hodge said. The wing-back situation is not quite as set for Big Red. Right now the starting slots are open to competition. Since the situation is fluid the coaching staff is keeping tight-lipped as to who the top candidates are. While coach Hodge might not be saying much that doesn’t mean South Point has nothing to work with. “We’ve got some good prospects,” Hodge noted. The Red Raiders wideouts are led by Ray Grier. As stated before Grier is a scoring threat. Last year Grier committed to the University of North Carolina. At 6’2 and 206 pounds, Grier is a top-tier player who can go after the ball. “He had a great summer,” coach Hodge said. “He’s really grown, not just as a football player, but as a leader, and as a person.” In addition to Grier, Senior Jammari Lewis and tight end Ethan Simmons will get the nod. “They all had a good summer,” coach Hodge said of his receivers. SOUTH POINT From page 9 In the South Point offensive schemes, wide receivers and tight ends are asked to do a lot of blocking. When asked if he thought that this batch of receivers were an asset to the run game Hodge quickly said, “If they couldn’t they wouldn’t play wide receiver for us.” South Point’s offensive line will feature several returning starters. This year’s line looks to be bigger, stronger, and faster. The group is led by two seniors, tackle Peyton Chaney and center Collin Owensby. Chaney and Owensby are All-Conference standouts who will provide the line with valuable experience. The Red Raiders other top lineman are Wyatt Triplett, Jacob Patterson, and Jacob Humphrey Defense Different looks for different situations
Coach Hodge will call the South Point defensive plays. As they did last year the Red Raiders will feature multiple sets and different looks. Most teams have a base defensive scheme they start with, but not South Point. At any given time the Red Raiders will shift from one defensive to another. At times South Point will feature elements of the 50, the 3-4, and even the 4-2-5. To he honest, there’s no telling what South Point will throw at their opponents. It would be reasonable to surmise that from week to week the defensive will change. “You can call it whatever you want,” head coach Adam Hodge said. “Different offenses require you to run different defenses.” South Point’s defensive line situation is wide open. As he did last year head coach Adam Hodge used a term often used by South Point coaching legend Mickey Lineberger to describe newer players that have yet to make their make. “They are green and growing,” Hodge said of the D-line. SOUTH POINT From page 10 The Red Raiders defensive line slots are open to competition. Whoever can prove themselves will get the job. The South Point linebacking corps features a group of tough, smart and physical players. “I really like to coach them,” Hodge said of his linebackers. “They’re good kids They don’t miss meetings, they don’t miss weights. They are just good South Point football players.” South Point’s top linebackers are Omari Hunt, Ryan Harris, and Matt Hastings. Hunt is an all-conference junior who knows his job. “He’s got good speed,” coach Hodge said of Hunt. “He’s good in space and he’s a talented player.” Coach Hodge things a lot of Harris and Hastings. Both are credited with being old school throwback players. They are physical and very tough. The South Point defensive backfield will feature a veteran group of players with lots of game experience. The DBs will be led by senior safeties Devon King and Nick Gange. King is a very talented player with good ball skills and a significant amount of experience. Gange is a great player in his own right. However, his working knowledge of the defense may be his biggest asset. “He’s a tough kid with tons of experience,” coach Hodge said. “He’s a threeyear starter. He knows the front end and the back end. He knows our defense.” Rounding out the defensive backfield will be Jammari Lewis and Ray Grier at the corner slots. Both players have good ball skills. The South Point special teams should be exciting to watch. Ray Grier and Devon King will be returning punts and kicks. “Ray had a couple of touchdowns last year,” coach Hodge went on to say. Grier and King are threats to take it all the way anytime they touch the ball. Nick Gange will handle the punting duties for the Red Raiders while the kicker situation will be sorted out in an open competition.
Once again the Red Raiders will compete in the Southwestern 2A Conference. The Southwestern has some tough competition. One of the toughest teams being the Shelby Golden Lions. In the last six years, the Golden Lions have earned state titles. They did so again last year. In the offseason, Shelby had a head coaching change where long-time head coach Lance Ware moved to Appalachian State. The change may just be interesting trivia. Shelby is still a top-notch program. “Shelby is always good,” coach Hodge added. “You have to beat them.” There have been other changes in the Southwestern 2A as well. East Gaston picked up a new head coach and the Burns Bulldogs will join the conference after being classified as a 2A school. Burns is leaving the Big South 3A to join the Southwestern. The addition of the Bulldogs will mean that the Southwestern will now feature seven schools from across three counties. “I like that we have more teams,” Coach Hodge said of the Burns move. Predictions The Red Raiders do have some holes to fill, but that has never stopped them in the past. Year in and year out South Point starts the season as a contender. South Point’s ability to develop players and bring them up from the JV program has given South Point a new crop of talent each year. There is no reason to think that has changed. There will be some things to watch this year. Look to see how Davis develops at quarterback and how the defensive line comes together. If Davis can run the offense effectively and the D-line steps up South Point will be good to go.

Stuart Cramer STORM

Cramer’s season may hinge on who steps up by John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com
2018 was a pretty good year for the Stuart Cramer Storm football team. Cramer made it to the first round of the playoffs before losing to Crest. In 2018 Cramer established themselves as a solid and capable football team. Cramer can no longer be considered a “new” program. While there’s no doubt that 2018 was a good year what will happen in 2019 is still up in the air. Cramer took big hits due to graduation. Quarterback Luke Carpenter linebacker Devin Polk and Caleb Clemmer all moved on. In addition to the loss of Carpenter, Polk, and Clemmer, the Storm also lost most of their offensive line to graduation as well. Offensive Outlook The Pistol Wing T Stuart Cramer will go into 2019 with a new offensive scheme. This year the Storm will be running the shotgun based Pistol Wing T. The Storm’s version of this offense will feature the wing-t concept and air-raid passing. Look for Cramer to strongly emphasize the run. Once the run game is established it’s likely the Storm will open things up with play-action passing. The offense will be called by offensive coordinator Shawn Watson. Jackson Harrington will line up at quarterback this year for Cramer. Harrington was a backup last year. The coaching staff has high hopes that the 5’11”. 170-pound senior can get things done. “He’s really improved to each year in the program,” head coach Ben McMillan said. “We feel really comfortable with him being able to distribute the ball and make the correct reads.” Lining up with Harrington in the offensive backfield will be a trio of senior running backs that give Cramer a combination of speed and power. At fullback will be De’Angelo Bruton, a stout back at 5’9” and 200 pounds. “He’s a big, strong and fast kid,” Coach Watson said. At the “Wing” spots will be Tyreese Morris and Harrison Shropshire. Morris can best be described as a scat pack who possesses breakaway speed and deceptive toughness. “He was our leading rusher from last year,” coach Watson said of Morris. “He rushed for over 1,400 yards.” Shropshire, on the other hand may be
just be a player who is in the right place at the right time. It’s common when a team incorporates a new scheme that some players will break out and come into their own. That may just be the case with Shropshire. “He’s really going to thrive in this offense,” McMillan said of Shropshire. The Cramer wide receiving corps is going to be a work-in-progress. The coaching staff is just going to have to see who shows up. Cramer’s receivers took a big hit when Division 1 prospect Kendall Karr went down with an offseason knee injury. Jonathan Brooks, Jesse Ryan, and Naven Pimentel will all get a shot to see what they can do. The Cramer offensive line is made up of a mixture of new players and players with some varsity experience. The line will be anchored by returning tackles Nate Linkous and Carter Merrill. The coaching staff is looking forward to seeing what Peyton Martin, Shad Wooten, and Patrick Abernathy can do. Defense The Hybrid Cramer will employ a hybrid type defense designed to adapt to who the Storm line up against. The defense will feature multiple fronts and different looks. It’s hard to put a label on the Storm’s defense. At times Cramer will line up as a 3-4. At other times they will line up with a five-man front. When asked to describe the Storm D defensive coordinator John Putnam described it in just one word, “aggressive.” The coaching staff believes that the defensive line should be the strength of the defense. Nose Omar Cerna and end Arias Nash return as starters from last years squad. At 6’1” and 315 pounds Cerna is a force that will take up space in the middle. Ends Carter Merrill and Tyrin Ross will be vying for playing time and hope to make an impact. The Cramer linebacking corps is made up of a group of high-energy players. Jaylin Truesdale will lead this group. Truesdale is moving from safety to linebacker and should be able to make an impact on the field and in the leadership department. Patrick Abernathy and Dayton Richardson are solid backers that are being looked at to get things done. The team is counting on Abernathy to
play a leadership role as well. Look for Charles Holbrooks, Triston Johnson and Dru Patterson to get plenty of work as they work their way into the lineup at the “Dog” spot. Due to the nature of a hybrid system, Cramer will rotate people in and out of the linebacker spot based on the situation. The Cramer defensive backfield should be solid for 2019. This group features a mix of athletic talent and varsity experience. The defensive backfield is led by veteran safeties Jamario Springs and Tyreese Morris. Another big addition will be cornerback Kwalee Fair who spent a year away from the program but returns for his senior year. Defense backs coach Ryan Ward is thrilled to have Fair back in the lineup. “He will be a bright spot for us,” Ward said of Fair. The Cramer special teams will sorely miss kicker/punter Devin Baldwin who will begin his college career this season at Gardner-Webb. “He did everything for us,” coach McMillan said. The staff is looking forward to having Jackson Mammano pick up the kicking duties, while Adam Hamam handles the punting. Both players come up from the JV program. Look for Tyreese Morris, DeAngelo
Bruton and Jonathan Brooks to contribute as returners. Final Outlook 2019 has the potential to be a good year for Cramer. It could also be a tough one. It will all depend on a few things working themselves out. On the plus side, the Storm has some solid players coming back. There is real talent on this team. However, on the other hand, you can’t hide the fact that Cramer lost some big-time players. So what will happen? It will all depend on who steps up. If the team comes together and plays to its potential it will be a big year for Storm football. With that said, if the veterans don’t lead and the new players don’t develop it’s going to be a long season. Another thing to factor in is the fact that Stuart Cramer plays in the Big South 3A, by far one of the toughest conferences in the state. Coach McMillan summed up how the season would go when he said, “It’s not who we play, it’s how we play.” Cramer starts the 2019 season at home on August 23 against Lincolnton.

Pet of the Week Tri-County Animal Rescue BIG DOG Pet of the Week is this Australian Shepherd named Bear. He is 8 years old and is starting to get around much better than when he first came into our program. Bear’s owner passed away about 8 months ago leaving Bear homeless. His owner loved him with food! Bear weighs about 90 pounds and should weigh about 60 pounds. He is already working on his exercise/diet routine and has lost about 40 pounds. He is good with everyone including other pets. Bear is looking for a walking partner. So, if you need a man to walk around with…come on out Saturday and get Bear. Bear is neutered, current on vaccines, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. He will be looking for you this weekend! The Australian shepherd has a great deal of stamina and is loving, bold, alert, confident, independent, smart and responsive. If it doesn’t get a chance to exercise and challenge its strongly developed mental and physical activities, it is apt to become frustrated and difficult to live with. With proper exercise and training, it is a loyal, utterly devoted and obedient companion. It is reserved with strangers and has a protective nature. It may try to herd children and small animals by nipping. Moderate Shedding: The Aussie sheds, but it’s a major event only twice a year, in the spring and fall. Frequent brushing, warm baths and thorough blow drying during that time will help keep the handfuls of hair under control. Outside of shedding season, bathe the Aussie only when he gets dirty. Please come out to our adoption event this weekend. If you are looking for an addition to your family, please come out and meet our pets this weekend. We have many available pets at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard this Saturday noon to 6 pm.
also learn the value of soil testing and how to interpret a soil test report.
October 8th-Session #5: Small Farm Livestock Production Livestock is a potentially profitable enter-
prise for small-scale agricultural operations. Livestock can offer a farm new revenue streams as well as increased fertility and weed control. Benefits and challenges of raising livestock on a small farm will be discussed along with evaluating various livestock enterprises. November 5th-Session #6: Livestock BMPS Livestock production may take many forms and, depending on your facilities, you may be able to combine several enterprises on your farm. Workshop participants will learn the basics of livestock nutrition, health related issues, necessary fencing/equipment and pasture management best practices. November 12th-Session #7: Marketing Essentials Marketing directly to your customers is not as easy as it looks. So come learn about the ins and outs of local markets, the importance of branding, what social media can do for you, how to display products for impulse purchases, how to use signage to sell more products, and how to engage customers throughout the season. November 19th-Session #8: Ten Acre Tuesdays Celebration Free for all of those that participated in at least two workshops within the series. This is a wrap-up session for the Ten Acre Tuesdays series which will include a meal and a farm(er)/industry panel Q&A. For additional information on the workshops series and how to register contact Gaston Extension at 704.922.2111.

Gaston County Schools conducted a ceremony on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. to announce W.A. Bess Elementary’s designation as an A+ School by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and the N.C. Arts Council. The ceremony took place at W.A. Bess Elementary School, 4340 Beaty Road, Gastonia. W.A. Bess Elementary is the first school in Gaston County to earn the A+ School distinction from the state. W.A. Bess is among a dozen schools in the western part of North Carolina that have earned the distinction. To show how being an A+ School is an elite honor, there are only about 60 A+ Schools in the entire state. The state’s A+ School program has been called the nation’s most successful whole-school transformation model using the arts. The program began in North Carolina in 1995 with 25 schools, and similar programs have started in other states. The program has a proven record of increasing student proficiency, closing the achievement gap, decreasing disciplinary and student attendance issues, and increasing parental and community involvement – and teachers involved in the A+ School program say they are more effective in their work. Teachers at W.A. Bess attended a week-long training
