Good news for great people!

Belmont Abbey College to build new residence hall for Fall 2020 Soon Belmont Abbey College will break ground on the newest addition to its campus, a 136-room residence hall. The largest capital investment in the college’s history, the new hall will primarily serve upperclassmen but also add new classroom, office, and meeting space. MKC Architects designed the new building to mirror the Gothic architecture prominent on the college’s campus. University Housing Solutions is the contractor building the new facility. “Each year we ask approximately 100 students to move off-campus and ask many more students to reside with more roommates than is ideal for our vision of student success,” said Allan Mark, Executive Vice President for Administration, Finance, and Operations. “The new halls will provide the College with the ability to accommodate all students who want to live on campus and allow them to take full advantage of life at the Abbey.” The City of Belmont, their planning, and their zoning departments have all

MKC Architects rendering approved the structure and at this time only additional permitting remains before construction can begin. The plans include additional parking for residents of the new hall. The as of yet unnamed new residence hall will be situated across from the softball field. The college has plans for a duplicate residence in the near future adjacent to the new dorm. In addition to these new accommodations, the college is also considering additional food service options for 2020 and beyond. The structure will be five stories, with the first story having meeting areas, social areas, offices, two classrooms, and a student lounge available to all students,

including commuters. The upper floors will alternate between a men’s and women’s floor. Each residence floor will have a kitchenette, study areas, a laundry area, and a gathering area on each side. For security, the upper floors will only be accessible via the elevator and the stairwell via the student’s magnetic ID that will permit them to their floor. “The new residence hall answers a need we’ve had for several years,” said Tom MacAlester, Dean of Student Life, “When students live on campus, they have a more enjoyable and more successful college career. We look forward to having greater capacity on our campus, and giving See ABBEY, Page 2

Few places in our area illustrates the past, present, and future of local business and technology as vividly as TechWorks of Gaston County. Ironically located in a former cotton mill at 52A Ervin St. in Belmont, TechWorks is a pioneering nonprofit that opened last April and aims to be the tip of the spear in bringing state of the art information technology and business networking to Gaston County. Terry Cox is executive director of Gaston Innovation Group, the organization that launched TechWorks in 2016. “TechWorks is an entrepreneurial tech hub for the region focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, tech education and training, and advocacy for high speed internet for all,” Cox said. “TechWorks is a game changer for the county and will bring in-demand jobs

and new opportunities creating economic growth for the county.” TechWorks had a lot of help getting off the ground. According to Cox, the NC Dept. of Commerce chipped in $1 million, Gaston County added $1million, and the City of Belmont put in $200,000. Other help came from the David Belk Cannon Foundation, the Glenn Foundation, National Mills LLC, the Stowe Foundation, Alliance Bank, Duke Energy, Charlotte SIM, and the Greater Gaston Development Corp. “TechWorks is a great representation of a public/ private partnership,” said Cox. “It’s the only one of its kind in North Carolina.” Highlighting the uniqueness of TechWorks is the physical space itself. The outside of the building is ordinary red brick from its textile days, but go inside and be prepared to be amazed. The TechWorks interior space was created by Redline Design of Charlotte and blends cool stainless

steel and glass with original hardwood floors and other hints of cotton mill days. The 14,000 sq. ft interior is light and airy and features work rooms, meeting space, a lunchroom, open desk space, and quiet cubicles. Out back, there’s an expansive deck. Firms or folks can rent as much or as little space as they need and it comes with gigabit fiber and state of the art AV connections. “TechWorks provides a place a place for leaders, entrepreneurs, and students to collaborate, writing Gaston’s next chapter together as it leads the region forward in creating an entrepreneurial tech hub,” said Cox. There’s more. TechWorks also offers leading certification programs as both a Certiport and Pearson VUE Authorized Testing Center, the first testing center in Gaston County. “TechWorks will develop a new generation of diverse tech leaders,” said Cox. TECHWORKS From Page 1 Overall, TechWorks Gaston is clearly the place to be for people looking to launch Gaston County into the 21st century and beyond. “Our goal is to help tech start-ups and entrepreneurs strive in the region and help community members thrive in the tech talent pipeline,” said Cox. “Together, we be-

lieve we can create a model for how an urban-rural county can become a hub for tech innovation, broadband expansion, and economic reinvention.” To learn more about TechWorks Gaston visit techworksgaston.com or call Cox at 704-709-3543,

At The Pointe Church in Belmont, THURSDAY IS THE NEW SUNDAY! Beginning Thursday, September 12th, the church will begin offering a 1-hour worship experience on Thursday nights at 6:45pm, for busy singles and families who either work weekends or have plans for the weekend. The service will be identical to those offered by the church on Sundays, and childcare will be provided. Plus, food trucks will be on site before the services to give busy families the chance to eat dinner at church before the service begins each and every Thursday night. So what is The Pointe of a Thursday Church Service? (Pun Intended) “Well, thirty-percent of people work at least some weekends,” said Lead Pastor & Cultural Architect, Ray Hardee. “When you add in sports, family vacations, and weekend getaways, we thought it would be great to provide this service as an alternative opportunity for local individuals and families to worship.” The church will also be hosting a carnival complete with games, inflatables, and a food truck on Saturday, September 7th from 9am until 1pm to promote this new service and to give those who are interested the chance to find out more about the church and this convenient new option. Plus, those attending will have an opportunity to receive a $10 food voucher to use to purchase food at the carnival. The mission of The Pointe Church is “Loving Jesus; Sharing Jesus; Becoming like Jesus.” In keeping with this mission, Hardee said, “The sermon series that will start in September will be entitled ‘Friends’ and will focus on the relevance of the Gospel in an age that desperately needs to know and live out the teachings and love of Christ.” The church’s 2020 vision is to have 2020 people in worship, 120 small group opportunities, 20 sustainable local and global partner ministries, and 200 baptisms.

Tri-County Animal Rescue:

Pet of the Week The featured small pet for this week is this tiny Pekingese mix named Teddy Rosco. Teddy Rosco is looking for a loving forever family. His human mom is having a serious surgery and the doctors said no pets in the house after the surgery so Teddy needs a home. Teddy is 8 years old and will stay small in size. He has beautiful long hair which will need some grooming. Teddy plays well with other pets and loves women. Teddy will steal your heart when you meet him. Teddy is current on vaccines, neutered, heartworm negative and micro-chipped. Pekingese are very intelligent, but that intelligence is offset by an independent mind and a wide stubborn streak. Training them is a challenge. They consider themselves in charge of any situation so you must persuade them that you are in charge and that doing what you want is to their advantage. Pekingese are very loving and affectionate with their family but aloof, almost wary, of strangers. Please stop in to visit the pets this weekend at PetSmart in Gastonia because the dogs and cats love the attention. They will be looking for you so come on out for some family fun. We also have other pets available for adoption at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard. Tri-County Animal Rescue will be available Saturday noon to 6 pm. Don’t forget! About Tri-County Animal Rescue Tri-County Animal Rescue is a non-profit

Mackenzie Granados recently celebrated her 12th birthday. Mackenzie is an animal lover and wanted to do something to benefit animals in need. So instead of gifts, she asked her family and friends to donate items to the dogs and cats at Tri-County Animal Rescue. She is pretty amazing. Mackenzie goes to Mt Holly Middle School and is in the 7th grade. Mackenzie is supported by her big sister, Alexis Granados. Alexis is 16 years old and goes to Stuart Cramer High School. Thank you Mackenzie and Alexis! Joann Hager photo

Celebrate Responsibly Enjoy your day off this Labor Day but, please remember to celebrate responsibly. Don’t drink and drive and don’t get in the car with any driver who has been drinking. When you drink and drive, you put yourself in danger and endanger the welfare of everyone else on the road.

Choose your ride... if you plan on drinking, remember to designate a sober driver early in the evening, or just call a cab!

In our world, people are often quick to tear others down. Many seem to take glee in the failing of an unfortunate person. Christians can also be this way, rejoicing in the downfall of someone they disagree with. However, imagine our world if instead of kicking someone while they are down, we reach out to them, and lift them up. We need to encourage others! The Book of Acts speaks of one of the greatest encouragers in the Bible, Barnabas. Acts 9:26-29 and 11:19-26 gives us two great instances of Barnabas lifting others up. In Acts 9, we see him helping the new convert Saul. Long before he was Paul the Apostle, Saul was a man who had persecuted the early church, until Jesus Himself spoke to him on the road to Damascus. Saul attempted to join the other disciples in Jerusalem, yet they were afraid of him. Barnabas however, befriended Saul and introduced him to the group. Later in Acts 11, we see the early church growing in cities like Antioch, as the church spread due to persecution. The church in Jerusalem sent Barnabas to meet these new converts. While there, he encouraged them to grow in their faith, and later with Paul, taught them for an entire year at the Antioch church.

Acts 4:36 says that the name Barnabas itself meant “son of encouragement” (ESV). Imagine if we as believers in Jesus were known as sons and daughters of encourage- Rev. Trent Tankin ment! Be like Barnabas, and reach out to someone today. So many people are near us facing fears, anxiety, and stress. Reach out to those people. Get to know them. Take time to understand who they are, and what they are experiencing. Barnabas took a chance on Saul, who had been so far from Jesus, and became his friend. You never know who you will shape for Jesus. The encouragement Barnabas showed Saul, would one day bear fruit into Paul, one of the greatest church planters and missionaries of Christianity. That person you reach out to, may very well go on to do great things for Jesus Christ. Perhaps today, you know of someone who needs some encouragement. Maybe they are facing a crisis at home. Maybe they are going through some stress of life that has them broken. Maybe they are waiting for you to reach your hand out to them! May you be the one who lifts them up from the quagmires of this life, and shows the love of Jesus to them. You could be the one who changes someone’s life with a simple outstretched hand. Just remember, Jesus reached His hand out to you.

THE

It’s back to school time in Gaston County! Bright and early last Monday morning, the buses rolled, the school bells rang, and more than 31,000 children (pre-kindergarten through high school) returned to our classrooms. Leading up to the first day, schools conducted orientation programs for students and parents, employees were involved in meetings and professional development, teachers spent time preparing classrooms, and school personnel took care of last-minute details to ensure a smooth opening of school. This year, Gaston County Schools has more than 1,900 classroom teachers at its 55 schools – about 90 of them are first-year teachers. The new teachers are participating in the district’s Teacher Induction Program for Success (TIPS), which is designed to ensure educators thrive in their new career. Most notable for the 2019-2020 year is the introduction of our new Academy programs in six areas: Career, Collegiate Prep, Health Sciences, Leadership, Public Service, and Technology and Industrial Engineering. With the additional programs, we now offer a total of 19 school choice/magnet school options for students. It is important to know that all of our schools offer outstanding choices in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, and other areas. Safety remains a priority for Gaston County Schools. In addition to having a comprehensive safety plan, every school has a full-time police resource officer, buzz-in entrance and visitor check-in systems, and surveillance cameras. School administrators spent time this summer reviewing emergency reunification plans and conducting safety walks, and a number of schools received life safety updates (cameras, intercoms, and doors/entry access) and new fencing. This summer, the Board of Education approved a new five-year strategic plan for Gaston County Schools. The plan outlines our guiding principles and highlights four

Turnovers hurt Red Raiders in 13-7 loss to Crest By John Wilson john.bannernews@gmail.com

Anytime South Point and Crest line up you can expect some smash-mouth football. Friday nights game was no exception. In another game that suffered from weather delays, the Crest Chargers beat the South Point Red Raiders 13-7 in a non-conference contest. The visiting Red Raiders got on the board first when Naseem Jones pounded in a 10-yard run for South Point. A Carson Smith PAT put the Red Raiders up 7-0. The first quarter ended with the Red Raiders leading 7-0. A coverage mistake in the second quarter helped Crest get on the scoreboard with the 56-yard long-range touchdown toss. “We gave up that big pass play,” head coach Adam Hodge said. “It was busted coverage.” Sadly, that wouldn’t be the Red Raiders only mistake of the night. After the Chargers tied it up both teams held each other to a standstill. The half ended with the score tied up 7-7. Defense prevailed in the third quarter with both squads keeping their opponent out of the end zone. In the fourth quarter, the course of the game shifted when Crest was able to score off a 13-yard run. However, a missed PAT only gave the Chargers a 13-7 lead. Even though the score was close and the Red Raiders were still in the game they were unable to capitalize. Playing without standout wide receiver Ray Grier, the Red Raiders relied on the ground game to get things done. Fullback Naseem Jones ran hard, gaining 117 yards off 34 carries. But Jones’s carries were all hard ones.

He only averaged 3.4 yards a carry. The Red Raiders had only 167 yards of total offense compared to the 296 yards put up by Crest. The South Point defense recovered three Crest turnovers. One interception and two fumbles. South Point’s top tacklers against Crest were Omari Hunt and Devon King. Hunt had nine tackles, while King finished the game with seven. Even though the Chargers were moving the ball more effectively than the Red Raiders, South Point still had chances to win. However, turnovers hit South Point harder than they did Crest. In all the Red Raiders coughed the ball up three times and lost two of those. One costly turnover may well have killed any shot the Red Raiders had to pull out the win. With less than five minutes to go in the game, the Red Raiders were deep in Charger territory when they fumbled the ball at the Crest 11 yard line. That fumble stopped what could have been a game tying drive. In a classic South PointCrest game that won’t get it done. “We played hard,” coach Hodge said. “I’m proud of how they played.” Hodge acknowledged that in the end, the turnovers hurt. “We turned the ball over too many times to win a tight football game,” Hodge explained. “You have to respect the effort, they played hard. But you can’t make mistakes when the game is tight. It was a good game, a good oldfashioned South Point-Crest game.” This week the Red Raiders will travel to Lincolnton in another non-conference matchup to face the Wolves.

Warriors show promise in 21-13 loss to North Gaston Losing is never fun in football. However, sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture. For East Gaston, Friday night’s 21-13 loss to the North Gaston Wildcats was a tough pill to swallow, but the loss offered clues as to what EG is capable of in the future. The Warriors fought hard and showed that they are capable of battling it out until the end. It’s fair to say that Friday night’s home opener did not start well for the Warriors. For starters, a series of thunderstorms ran through Gaston County. The storms postponed kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium and fields across the region. “I know that it was an emotional deal,” head coach Jason Lippard said. “We had to wait until 9:15 to start.” Once the skies cleared and action got underway, things didn’t get any better for East Gaston. The Wildcats built up a 14-0 first-quarter lead before things finally started to go

EG’s way. Arrowhead Stadium went nuts in the second quarter when KJ Dagout fielded a kick-off and got EG back on track. Dagout found a crease in the Wildcat coverage and took it right up the middle before hugging the left sideline on his way to an 85-yard touchdown. Dagout’s score put the Warriors back in the game. “We were down 14-0 nothing and our kids battled back,” coach Lippard said. “It was 14-7 at the half.” Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter. Things heated up in the fourth when EG put six more points on the board off a 13yard TD run by Dagout. A missed PAT left EG down but far from out trailing the Wildcats 14-13. With about nine minutes left in the game, the Wildcats took control and were able to march down the field and score the go-ahead TD. “They rolled down and scored,” Lippard said. “That’s kind of demoralizing.” With the scoreboard read-

ing North Gaston 21-East Gaston 13, things were getting dicey. Even though EG was down the Warriors still had a shot to tie the game. After the Wildcats scored, EG started their own drive and pushed the ball down well inside the North Gaston red zone. “We fought back and got all the way to the 17-yard line,” coach Lippard added. With time running out, EG took a few shots but came up short. In the end, the Warriors just ran out of time and luck. “We had two shots to win it and just didn’t,” Lippard went on to say. “We ran out of time. We didn’t make a play.” Throughout the game, EG faced an uphill battle, but they kept fighting. North Gaston outperformed East Gaston in total offense by generating 325 yards of total offense to EG’s 152. East Gaston turned the ball over three times, yet the Warriors kept fighting. No matter what the Wildcats threw at them the Warriors kept fighting.

Coach Lippard believed the entire team played hard. He also pointed out the performances of KJ Dagout and Jake Thomas as well. “KJ Dagout had a return for a touchdown,” Lippard said. Dagout also ran for 95 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. “Jake Thomas played really hard,” Lippard noted. “He did a good job.” There’s no doubt that East Gaston has a lot of work to do if they want to start churning out wins. In the end, a loss is still a loss, but in this game, there was a lot to be positive about. EG showed heart. The team showed that they would battle to the end. Those are encouraging signs. Now East Gaston just needs to find a way to limit turnovers and take advantage of scoring opportunities. If they do that they may just turn things around. This week the Warriors head to Stuart Cramer to take on the Storm.

The total equals Limestone for the most among conference schools. All totaled, 2,349 student-athletes were recognized. “Conference Carolinas student-athletes consistently show that they are dedicated to truly being ‘champions in body, mind and soul,’” Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “Having over 2,300 studentathletes named to the Presidential Honor Roll for the second straight semester is a true credit to the efforts of

many behind the scenes on our campuses that work daily to help our student-athletes realize their full potential.” The Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll is awarded after the fall and spring semesters. The Presidential Honor recognizes the scholastic achievements of Conference Carolinas student-athletes who achieve a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale each semester. All student-athletes - including underclassmen, transfers and those who play non-conference sponsored sports - are eligible for the recognition as long as they participated during the past semester.
