Remains of Korean War MIA from Cramerton coming home By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The remains of Cramerton native and Korean War U.S. Army MIA Earl Duncan will soon be coming home. Duncan was reported missing on December 2, 1950 during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. The battle, called the largest of the Korean War, was part of a larger campaign against Chinese Communist and North Korean troops and happened in what is now North Korea from November to December 1950. Duncan’s family received a call, ironically on Sept 11, from the U.S. Army saying that his remains were currently in a facility in Hawaii where they had been brought from Korea and identified. The next step, which should
happen soon, will be to bring them home for a service with full military honors and burial in Gaston Memorial Park. Several of Duncan’s relatives, including brothers Howard and Sam, and sister Elsie Duncan Loftin, gathered last week to reflect on Earl’s life and how the news of his return had impacted them. According to his siblings, Earl was born on November 2, 1927 one of six children of Fronia and Prosey Duncan. He went to school at McAdenville Elementary then went to work in the weave department of Burlington Mills. Earl joined

Stowe Park getting major upgrade By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
The front entrance to Stowe Park in downtown Belmont is getting a major rework, Work has been going on for a couple of weeks on the precipitous old concrete staircase and embankment leading from the central S. Main St. entry point to make it safer and more attractive. City of Belmont public works director David Isenhour explained just exactly what’s being done. “For years the steep slope at this embankment
was worn and used by kids riding their bikes down the slope and wearing it out,” Isenhour said. “We added the decorative fence along the sidewalk to eliminate this problem several years ago and we added some ground cover and shrubs to try and keep the embankment from washing completely out. This didn’t hold up and it became covered in weeds and overgrowth. The City decided to contract with the builders of the Fighting Yank and recently the new Stowe Park water fountain. This contractor will build two – tiered
walls on each side of the new steps. These walls will be benched and curved and will match the fountain and Fighting Yank with the same stone work. It will have up lighting the same as the fountains and Yank as well. There will be specialized ground plants of various varieties and the new area will have irrigation. The steps will be tiered as well and have flag stone steps and terrace’s along with inserted lighting within the steps. It’s long overdue and will enhance the beauty of Stowe See PARK, Page 4
John and Jennifer Church giving their vision for Chronicle Mill another go By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again. That old adage certainly applies to the saga of husband/ wife team John and Jennifer Church and their years old attempt to bring adaptive reuse to the 117 year old Chronicle Mill in Belmont. Last Monday the pair held an informational workshop at TechWorks in Belmont to show their latest, and perhaps last, ideas for turning the huge, red brick, edifice to bygone textile days into upscale apartments that will blend a nostalgic feel with every modern amenity. Located on Catawba St., the 110,000 sq. ft. Chronicle Mill was built in 1901 by R.L. Stowe and other investors. Workers who laid the bricks for the imposing threestory structure earned $1.75 for every thousand they put

From Page 1 “Earl liked to play in the river, but that was against momma and daddy’s wishes,” she said. “My best memory of him was his smile.” Howard praised Earl’s sense of honor. “He was a loyal, great guy,” he said. “He was always faithful.” Sam recalled Earl’s intellect and sense of adventure. “He was very curious and loved being outdoors,” he said.

Sam also remembered the last time he saw Earl. “I went to visit him at Fort Jackson,” he said. “We stood outside the barracks and talked a while.” Earl’s family expressed how they felt when they received the call concerning his remains. “I’m still trying to calm down,” Elsie said. Howard was moved talking about it. “It has been an emotional roller coaster,” he said. “I am happy, but it’s been emotionally, physically, and spiritually hard to handle.” Sam agreed that the 69 years since Earl was reported MIA had been trying.
“It’s been a long, drawed out thing,” he said. “You think about it. My hopes had waned over the years, but now I’m happy.” The next step for Earl’s remains will be to being them to the U.S. from Hawaii, then local arrangements will be made for a funeral at McAdenville Wesleyan Church. That event is certain to be one where plenty of tears will be shed, but, as Elsie said “They will be tears of happiness.” The BannerNews will follow this story in the coming days.

A Message from Danny Jackson, Mt Holly City Manager Hello good citizens,The Mayor and City Council for the City of Mount Holly have the responsibility as elected officials to uphold the health, safety and welfare of our citizens. In doing so there are times that decisions have to be made and carried out by city staff that are not always popular but necessary for the greater good of our community. Given the above, the decision to increase the water and sewer rates this year is an example of a decision that was made for the long term best
interest of the Mount Holly Community. The basis for the decision speaks to both economic development and overall quality of life for our community. The economic development aspect involves the city’s ability to strategically grow in a way that its viability is upheld with tax base and job creation implications. Based upon recruiting and retention of businesses we have to have capacity in our utilities system (water & sewer) to accommodate them. In addition to that we
have capacity in our system for residential uses to support the business uses. How we arrived at this point involves the following: Over a decade ago the City’s existing wastewater plant endured an assessment by an engineering firm which determined that given the age of the plant as it relates to longterm durability it was necessary to make improvements or other arrangements to treat wastewater. In addition to an aging plant the State of North Carolina created an unfunded mandate that involved the
treatment of wastewater to a higher degree than before to eliminate certain chemicals/pollutants from being discharged into the river for obvious environmental reasons (drinking water supply for multiple jurisdictions). Because of the two items above and the associated costs the City had to undergo an overall assessment of how best to address the two items, all of this with growth on the horizon. The assessment involved at least seven options for review, all of which led to today’s circumstance of con-
necting with Charlotte Water to treat the City’s wastewater well into the future. The review process also involved the City’s Utilities Committee which is comprised of citizens, staff and appointed representatives of the City Council. The Utilities Committee acts as an Advisory Board to the City Council. The decision was based upon the least costly, best efficient and most effective way to address the issue. The City filed an application to the State for assistance with funding of not only the Charlotte Water Project but another project in the South Gateway Area that involved wastewater treatment, which both were approved and helps to lessen the financial burden on the City as a company and ultimately our citizens. This too, was based upon an assessment of the circumstances. As a part of the process for funding and other requirements it is necessary for the City to increase its utilities rates due to
the fact that the City’s rates had been so low for so many years, which was primarily prior to and more recently during growth. The City hired a financial firm to undergo a water and sewer rate study which determined that with projects, financing and system maintenance it was necessary to raise rates. These decisions and processes are for the long-term good of our community, even though they come with a cost. The cost through well thought out efforts have been minimized to the highest degree. It’s also important for people to realize that it’s not just about the cost of doing something, it’s also about the cost of not doing anything, which sometimes can be greater and more harmful. Thanks for your patience, understanding and trust in the system from which we operate on a daily basis for the greater good of our community.

Holly PD had the opportunity to celebrate the birthday of a very special person- Chaplain Angela Pleasants. “We hope you are having a wonderful birthday, and we are so grateful for your support and endless encouragement of the men and women of the Mount Holly Police Department,” said Chief Don Roper. Gaston County has eighth confirmed rabies case of 2019 On Sunday September 15, 2019 at approximately 7:00pm Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement unit received a call from 70 block of Wade Street Belmont, NC 28012. The call was in reference to possible rabid animal. Two family dogs fought with a raccoon and the raccoon was killed during encounter. Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident. The deceased Raccoon from Wade Street was sent to the NC Labo-
ratory of Public Health in Raleigh. On Tuesday September 17, 2019 the raccoon specimen tested positive for rabies. The family animals on Wade Street did not have the required rabies vaccinations. These are some architectural renderings of how the Chronicle Mill project would look if completed. BB&N Architects of Charlotte is the company.
CHRONICLE From Page 1 sits empty. In the meantime, the Churches came up with their current idea that would see a fourth story added to the old structure and a new, four story building constructed beside it. Together, the two buildings would have 240 apartments. “It has evolved from commercial to apartments,” John said. “Apartment demand is very high.” But there’s a fly in the ointment. When the Churches bought the mill, its deed was ‘bundled’ with 184 others in the area that stipulated that only single family dwellings are allowed. The deed restrictions, put in place in 1991 by
R.L. Stowe Mills, covers not only property adjacent to the mill, but ones as far away as East Belmont. The Churches need 75 percent of deed holders to approve a document lifting the restriction. So far, they’ve gotten about 30 percent on board. “The document will not change anything on their land,” said Jennifer. “It is private between the developers and parcel owners. It won’t cost the parcel owners anything.” According to the Churches, it’s likely Jennifer will go door to door if need be with a copy of the document and a notary public at her side. In addition,
the Churches will be at the November 4 Belmont city council meeting with their plans, but council approval is not needed for the project. If the Churches are suc-

sets of new self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) air packs. “Our current air packs are out of date and in great need of replacement,” said Chief Carr. “This grant will be an enormous help to our department in bringing our air packs up to current standards.” “I visited Ranlo Fire and Rescue last year to recognize the department for a FEMA staffing and retention grant and it’s great to see them continue to be successful in the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program,” said Congressman McHenry. “Having up-to-date gear is vital to any fire department and I commend Chief Carr and his team for writing a compelling grant.” A panel of fire experts at DHS awards AFG grants through a competitive re-
view process. Congressman McHenry hosts workshops for 10th District EMS and fire departments to help guide personnel through the process and give them an inside view of what the committee looks for. The workshops are taught by Cherryville Fire Chief Jeff Cash, a nationally recognized expert in his field and former member of DHS’s AFG review committee. Ranlo is one of six 10th District departments to receive AFG funding thus far during the 2018 cycle with a total of $2,257,183 in AFG funds having been awarded among those departments. By 1908, the mill was powered by electricity, a move that doubled production. In time, countless cones of cotton thread would be spun at the Chronicle Mill until it finally shut down in 2010. The mill sat empty for several years and the Churches bought it. An early idea John and Jennifer first had would have seen the building transformed into a hotel, office, retail space, and event space, but the market wasn’t ready. “There was not enough commercial demand to support that idea,” John said. Nonetheless, the Churches began work to try and get the mill structure ready for whatever evolved. Projects they took on included removing a huge water tank, tearing off a brick facade, working on the foundation, and putting plastic on the multitude of windows. More time has passed since then, the plastic is shredded, and the mill still

At some point in our lives, we have had someone who has hurt us in some way. It could have been a friend who betrayed our trust, or even a family member such as a husband or wife who did something to break our hearts. The pain from such hurt is real. It takes us a long time to get over someone who harms us or someone we love. When it is a fellow Christian that does something to hurt us, it is even more painful, since they should be reflecting the love of Christ. John 18:10-12 records an encounter Jesus and some of His disciples had as He prepared to go to the cross. As Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane with Peter, James, and John, a group sent from the chief priests and rulers came to arrest Him, led by Judas who was betraying his Lord. John, who was an eyewitness to these events, writes that as they attempted to arrest Jesus, Peter drew a sword that he had brought. With the sword, he struck a servant of the high priest, Malchus. Peter cut off his right ear. Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup My Father has given Me?” (John 18:11, NKJV). Jesus then healed the ear of the servant. Peter did not understand, yet Jesus knew all of these events were in the Father’s will as He prepared to die on the cross for us. Peter faced many of the same emotions we
face when someone does something to hurt us. Those people who had gathered were attempting to hurt his Lord. This was unfair to Peter. He knew Jesus had Rev. Trent Tankin done nothing but proclaim the gospel, heal the sick, and restore life. Peter also wanted revenge on those who would arrest Jesus. Peter understood the hurt, and the pain of watching someone he loved being treated so poorly. Like Peter, we see a world that can be so unfair and unjust. We try to live for God, serving Him, and yet often those who hurt us live as they want, without any care or repercussion. We often want revenge as well. When someone hurts us so bad, we want them to understand the same pain they have inflicted on us. As we see in the healing of this servant, Jesus ultimately has control over all things. He won the victory as He died on the cross, and then rose from the dead that first Easter. We know that Jesus will judge all people one day. Vengeance is left to Him. We should never worry about revenge, we should simply seek to live faithfully for God every day. Jesus will take care of the rest. We should also remember, that Jesus healed the servant’s ear. He showed mercy to the one seeking to harm Him. May we always offer the same mercy even if someone does not deserve it, because in our sin, we have harmed Jesus as well, yet He showed us mercy as He died for us!

Gas prices climbing... Gas prices continued to climb for the fourth straight day following facility shutdowns from attacks in Saudi Arabia this past weekend. North Carolina’s $2.45 average is up one cent overnight and 10 cents on the week. South Carolina’s $2.36 average is up one cent overnight and 13 cents on the week. The timeline for Saudi Arabian facilities to resume normal operations remains fluid. During a press conference on Tuesday, Saudi Ara-
bia’s energy minister said half of the oil production that was lost has been restored and normal production would resume by the end of September. If this proves true, any price spikes being realized now will be short-term. “The attacks caused a spike in the price of crude oil, which has led to higher costs at the pump,” said Tiffany Wright, AAA Carolinas spokesperson. “Typically, as we approach fall we should be seeing cheaper prices at
the pump, so it’s unfortunate we’re experiencing increases across the Carolinas. We’re hopeful that these more expensive prices won’t last long.” Additionally, U.S. dependence on Saudi Arabian crude imports has decreased in the past decade. In the first half of the year, on average, the U.S. imported about 18,000 bbl as compared to 35,000 bbl in the first half of 2017.

Gardner Park Elementary receives donation
The Gaston Christian School varsity soccer team is off to a great start. They defeated Concord First Assembly in overtime last week. GCS photo
Gardner Park Elementary School has received a significant donation from Burlington Stores, Inc. through a partnership with AdoptAClassroom. org. During an assembly on September 13, store manager Michael Renwand made the surprise announcement to students, teachers, and staff and presented a big $10,000 check to principal Jaime Wallace.
The funds will be used to purchase new supplies for each teacher’s classroom. Wallace described the event as “epic” for Gardner Park teachers and students. “On behalf of Gardner Park Elementary, I would like to thank Burlington and AdoptA-Classroom for adopting our entire school,” said Wallace. “Our teachers are looking forward to using the funds
to enhance learning in their classrooms. We are extremely grateful for the support from Burlington and Adopt-AClassroom.” Burlington opened its new store in Gastonia on September 6, and “adopting” Gardner Park coincides with the store’s grand opening celebration. The store is located at 3584 East Franklin Blvd. in the Franklin Square shopping center.

After the King TD, Carson Smith nailed his fifth PAT of the night to extend the Red Raiders lead to 35-0. In the fourth quarter, things slowed down with South Point throttling back some and Cramer unable to make it to the end zone. The game ended with South Point winning 35-0. South Point. When all was said and done South Point shut down any talk of this being Cramer’s year by beating the Storm 35-0. On top of that, the win may just have changed the trajectory of the Red Raiders season. In the first few minutes of the game, the action started a bit slow. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but South Point showed that they could move the ball. In an effort to get the running game going the Red Raiders switched things up by playing three different players at quarterback. Javus Davis, Ray Rose, and Devon King all took snaps at QB. In the second quarter, those tweaks really started to pay off when South Point scored 21 unanswered points off of touchdown runs by Jammari Lewis, Javus Davis and Ray Rose.
Let the game begin.

The coin toss at the Stuart Cramer vs South Point game last Friday. “Boys played good,” Hodge said “It’s good to get the win. We played a bunch of guys at different positions.” Overall, the Red Raiders amassed 465 yards of offense. All of which came from the ground game. For the entire game, the Red Raiders just kept pounding the ball. So how did the Red Raiders pile up that many yards?
Well, there was no magic wand at play. In fact, the explanation is as simple as coach Hodge’s answer. “Blocking better and running harder,” Hodge said. On Friday night the South Point ball carriers and offense line worked together like a well-oiled machine. The question now is can they keep it up?
This week South Point will be on the road as they open their Southwestern Conference against Burns. The 3-1 Bulldogs are a new addition to the conference. Last year Burns petitioned the North Carolina High School Athletic Association See SOUTH POINT, Page 15

SOUTH POINT From Page 14 (NCHSAA) to be reclassified from a 3A school to a 2A one. The NCHSAA granted that request and the Bulldogs moved from the Big South 3A to the Southwestern 2A. Burns will be a tough opponent. To beat the Bulldogs, South Point will need to build on the momentum they established this week and keep on pushing forward. Coach Hodge knows what needs to be done to keep things going in the right direction. “We still have to get better,” Hodge stressed. “Burns has a good team. Their RB is dangerous.” Cramer also opens up their Big South 3A Confer-
ence schedule with a home game against the 5-0 undefeated Kings Mountain Mountaineers. The Storm will need to figure some things out before facing Kings Mountain and the other members of the Big South. While the South Point win definitely gave the Red Raiders a platform to move forward, it’s yet to be determined how Cramer will handle this tough loss. The last two games showed that what was a tough Storm defense is now vulnerable to the run. Of course, the play of the defense isn’t the only thing Cramer needs to address.
Since beating East Gaston two weeks ago the Cramer offense has done little to help out. To be competitive in the Big South the Storm offense and defense will need to be more productive. This week’s loss is not the end of the world for the Storm. Not by a long shot. Cramer has some solid players. At 2-3 the Storm still have time to figure things out. However, Cramer can’t wait too long. The next few conference games will be critical. Let’s see if Cramer can make some adjustments and get back on track.
Ready, set.

Last week the Gaston County Jaycees presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to Belmont Middle School for having the most school participation during the Jaycees Labor Day 5k race. In addition, Belmont Central Elementary received a check in the amount of $500 and Cramerton Middle School received a check in the amount of $250. Tri-County Animal Rescue BIG DOG Pet of the Week is this Australian Shepherd/Hound mix named Barney. He is 7 years old. Barney weighs about 60 pounds. He just had a dental so his smile sparkles. Barney is good with everyone including other pets. If you need an older boy around the house…come on out Saturday and get Barney. Barney is neutered, current on vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped. He will be looking for you this weekend! The Australian shepherd has a great deal of stamina and is loving, bold, alert, confident, independent, smart and responsive. If it doesn’t get a chance to exercise and challenge its strongly developed mental and physical activities, it is apt to become frustrated and difficult to live with. With proper exercise and training, it is a loyal, utterly devoted and obedient companion. It is reserved with strangers and Barney has a protective nature. It may try to herd children and small animals by nipping. Moderate Shedding: The Aussie sheds, but it’s a major event only twice a year, in the spring and fall. Frequent brushing, warm baths and thorough blow drying during that time will help keep the handfuls of hair under control. Outside of shedding season, bathe the Aussie only when he gets dirty. Please come out to our adoption event this weekend. If you are looking for an addition to your family, please come out and meet our pets this weekend. We have many available pets at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard this Saturday noon to 6 pm.
About Tri-County Animal Rescue Tri-County Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization serving Lincoln, Gaston and other surrounding counties. We are committed to ending pet homelessness in this area and we need your continued support. If you cannot adopt a pet, then support Tri-County in other ways. We need volunteers and donations to continue our mission of finding homes for these unwanted animals. Please help Tri-County Animal Rescue continue to save pets by adopting your next pet this weekend? Our “needs” list includes: towels, Clorox, laundry detergent, paper towels, dry dog food and dry cat food.
