The popular Mt. Holly Parks and Rec. Mtn. Island Park at 400 Mountain Island Road closed September 7 and will stay that way until early 2026. Duke Energy owns the park but leases it to the city of Mount Holly. The park offered fishing, hiking, picnic area, and playground equipment for kids. Alternative access to the park’s trail system is being evaluated with details available in early 2023. My father had a love of water. It started with an above ground swimming pool in the early 1960’s. There were fishing trips in sixteen-foot row boats. His best friend had a twenty-five foot Chris Craft cabin cruiser boat. Frank and my father would go fishing every weekend. The bug hit my dad to own a boat. One day, he found a twenty-six foot Trojan cabin cruiser for sale. It was barely used and was deeply discounted. My dad was smitten. He had the challenge of convincing my mom, who was deathly afraid of water, to say yes. They bought the boat. My dad was so proud of it. Every weekend, Frank and my dad would swap back and forth whose boat they would take to go fishing. Frank got married and his days of fishing with my dad abruptly ended. I became my dad’s firstMymate.dad wanted to teach me how to drive it. He’d put me behind the wheel (don’t think of a car wheel, but a boat wheel with knobs coming off of it) and told me to drive it. I learned to slowly leave the boat slip on idle and not to make any wake in the marina. Once past the no wake zone, he’d have me accelerate it. I’d go halfway with the throttle and felt really proud. He would take the throttle and push it all the way. The bow

Up front I admit I am terribly judgmental. I know I should not be that way but that’s one area I really need to work on, and I recently got a chance to do just that. Last Sunday my pal Calvin and I went for a ride on our vintage British motorcycles. He was on his 1978 Triumph T140 and I took my 1972 T120. We plotted a course through Stanley and Alexis heading towards Philadelphia Church Rd. and on into Lincoln County and Iron Station and the convenience store on NC27 where we often stop for a snack and to watchWepeople.were cruising along near Narrow Gauge Rd. and suddenly my bike seemed like it was getting louder. All at once it got really loud and there was a terrible scraping sound and sparks flying and I looked down and the left hand exhaust pipe had come out of the motor and was dragging the pave! The tab on the pipe that bolts to the engine bracket hadWebroken.pulled over and stood on the side of the road in the broiling sun for a while. I pondered the predicament. There was a house nearby but it had a bull dawg barking and growling and showing its teeth so that was no go. In desperation I walked a bit to a nearby mo-bile home. There was an old pickup truck out front as well as a considerable amount of dead machinery and cast off “stuff” and as I approached the abode (with much trepidation) I saw a human being asleep in the truck. I gingerly said hello and the supine gent roused and looked around with a “whar am I” look on his face. Poor thing must had had a really rough Saturday evening of merrymaking because his beard was skewed to one side as if he was standing in a windstorm and his hair had an electrified look to it. Not to mention roadmap eyes. Anyway, I told him my situ-a-shun and asked if he had some baling wire or a coat hanger. He got out and dug around in the Hetruckamountcorn-siderableoftrashinthebedbutnoluck.stumbledtothedoor of the mo-bile home and went in and another drowzy and disheveled chap came staggering out and he had no wire either but another equally unkept bloke came out and after a moment of deep thought and eye rubbing and fragrant yawning declared he reckoned he had some in a shed out back. He went and got a piece and handed it to me. Well, I took the wire and offered them five bucks but they demurred and wished me a ‘blessed day” and in short order got the pipe back on and rode back home. Later on, I pondered what had transpired and how judgmental (and wrong) I had been about those guys. The scenario of where they lived and the way they seemed to live and how they looked birthed some ugly names in my head. I won’t repeat them here, but you might guess at what they were.
The fact is, I was like that man in the bible who had been whupped up on and left in a ditch and no one offered to help except a guy from a class that was generally looked down on. The fact is the whole time Calvin and I were on the roadside not a soul in their shiny pickup trucks and SUVs stopped to offer help. On the other hand, the three mo-bile home guys were as nice as they could be and even wished me a blessed day. I learned a lesson last Sunday and it wasn’t in a brick-and-mortar church sanctuary but on the side of a country road under a broiling August sun. Don’t judge a book..or a person…by their cover.
I needed a teacher of the boat came up. I could barely see over it. He stood alongside me to make sure all wasHewell.also taught me how to navigate going under bridges. You slowed the boat to idle so there was no wake. You aligned the boat so it was straight and centered under the bridge. Then, under its own speed, you navigated it under the bridge, staying clear from both sides. It was amazing. I was, driving this twenty-six-foot cabin cruiser and I wasn’t even a teenager. A few years later, my mom had enough of the boat and refused to go on it. My dad sold it. We never talked about it again. It was the last boat I Fastdrove.forward, I’m at a boat ramp and run into some members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. They invited me to take a boater safety course. Life got in the way and I missed the course. The next year, I found the flyer, called the leader, signed up and attended. Both my wife and I passed the course. A few weeks later, I joined the USCGWorkingAuxiliary.around Covid, I had a chance to go out with the

By Dennis Siracusa This morning I drank my morning coffee at home, in my travel thermos, because yesterday I accidentally left that thermos at a restaurant and felt bad about my negligence. Hopefully this experience will affect me so I won’t make the same mistake again. Influence happens everywhere! Today I noticed the thermos top section was hot from the impact of the coffee passing through it while the bottom was cold because of insulation. Both results were as they were designed to be. What about life; what are Gods’ purposeful designs for us meant to produce? Our lives’ interests, skills, and talents are uniquely imbedded by God for what reason; and how does that reason relate to the overriding creation story God has Whenwritten?people consider Heaven, most want to go there. In John Bunyan’s book The Pilgrim’s Progress, several pilgrims were travelling toward heaven and each were encountering distractions, obstacles and dangers unique and tailored by the devil to their personalities. Life is like that isn’t it? Some travelers overcome challenges and stay on the straight and narrow while others are overwhelmed and get temporarily or permanently lost. In life, our purpose is to learn about God, relate to Him, and desire to be like Him. We all want to travel life wisely but we’ve inherited a critical flaw. Sin; and our hearts (mind, will, and emotions) have been poisoned to resist everything God by the forces of darkness operating in our world. Scripture reminds us “the devil comes only to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10) Satan craves destroying everything he can about God and God’s creation; that includes you, me, our planet, our children; everyone and everything. Our only hope is to listen to and follow the Lord. God also wants us to use our “uniqueness” to impact other’s lives, teach them about righteousness, warn of Satan’s traps, and encourage humanity to stay on God’s path. So what is God’s path anyway? It’s actually a process of learning God’s truth, agreeing with it and letting it become part of our life; replacing damaged areas in our hearts so we are progressively renewed. We metaphorically, crawl onto God’s potter’s wheel; have broken parts removed and new life infused. It’s a process called sanctification. Some ask if sanctification is difficult or short lived. From my experience it can be difficult but it’s worth it and it seems this side of heaven, we’ll all always be a work in progress. Have you ever noticed our lives are built in layers and the impact of all our experiences is imbedded in our unique layers? Sin and our experiences can only be

He was also a certified boat captain. I hired him to teach me how to navigate a boat I rented. It had been decades (with an “s”) since I piloted a boat. I was grateful for his leadership. Skills, that were rusty, were coming back. I could have rented a boat and attempted to pilot it myself. Instead, I chose to hire a teacher. It was money well spent. There are times in our lives when we need to call on someone to come alongside us. They may be a life coach, a counselor, or a friend who can help us navigate the challenges of life. Don’t let your ego keep you from asking for help. You’ll be glad you didn’t.

Congratulations to Paramedic Andrew Adams on obtaining his Tactical Paramedic Certification (TP-C). Paramedic Adams is the first paramedic at GEMS to achieve this certification. The certification process is focused on the knowledge level of accomplished, tactical paramedics in hostile and austere environments and is accredited through the International Board of Specialty Certifications. GEMS photo borhood we grew up in was slowly fading away,” he said. “The people who made the most impact like the educators, athletes, clergy, etc., were dying off and no one was picking up what was once there. He and I decided that we wanted to celebrate who we are, and what we still had. We wanted to recognize our past, celebrate our present and prepare our youth for the future. We also wanted to introduce those that just recently moved into our neighborhood and the history of what made it so special. We started with a Facebook page called BOOGATOWN 4 LIFE. The group currently has 276 members and is still growing. We used the page to announce events that were happening in the neighborhood and post pictures from our past and present. Last year we had Charlie Martin, Chief now Sheriff Chad Hawkins members of Local Law Enforcement attend and speak, food vendors, and a jump king. We gave out “impact awards” and One ICON Award, We will have the celebration this year at the Reid Ball Field, on the corner of Lincoln St. and Sacco St., from 2 pm - 7 pm. Fans were treated to a host of static displays arrayed inside of Lineberger Stadium. The displays included various emergency vehicles and some military equipment. South Point came into this game undefeated at 2-0 while the Hilltoppers rolled in with a 1-1 record. A pre-game review of the stats going into this one proved interesting. GAME From Page 10
In the end South Point would leave the field with a big 42-14 win and a 3-0 record.Looking back at how things worked out head coach Adam Hodge was good with the effort he saw. “It was a lot like last week,” Hodge said. “A lot of kids got to play. We looked good offensively, defensively and on special teams.” Up until the game against Central, the South Point punting game had seen limited action. This game provided the Red Raiders with a chance to give that unit some work. “I don’t like to punt,” coach Hodge went on to say. “But I like that we punted the ball well. Aiden Ramirez did reallySeveralwell.”players turned in noteworthy performances for the Red Raiders. Cam Medlock showed that he is a classic South Point fullback. Medlock ran hard and kept moving forward every time he carried the ball. Medlock had 16 carries for 120 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the game with an impressive 7.5 yard per carry average. After a solid performance last week against East Gaston, freshman quarterback Patrick Blee showed that he may not be a one hit wonder. Blee delivered a solid performance for Big Red finishing with 81 yards off seven carries and going two for two through the air with a touchdown.Another special teams standout was kicker Charlie Birtwistle. Birtwistle was Mr. Automatic going six for six on PAT attempts.
Thursday, September 8, 2022 The Banner News / banner-news.com Page 11 probably determine who had the upper hand. R-S Central runs a highoctane triple option offense that has put up 76 points in two games. On the other side of the coin the South Point defense has only allowed 19 points in two games. When you flip the script and match up the Central defense against the Red Raiders Redbone things didn’t look so rosy for the Hilltoppers. Like Central, the South Point offense has also put up 76 points in two games. However, the Hilltopper defense has yet to prove that they can stop anyone. In two games they’ve given up 76 points. Before the players took the field there was a lot of energy in the stadium. Yet, 15 minutes before the game the atmosphere in the South Point locker room was subdued.Instead of getting pumped up players and coaches sat in quiet reflection or in small groups going over last-minute adjustments. You could say that it was reminiscent of the quiet before the storm. However, by the time the players left the locker room they were ready to rumble. As part of the pre-game program all active-duty military, veterans and first responders were asked to come on to the field and assemble along the South Point sideline to beAshonored.theteam entered the field the players along with the coaches, cheerleaders and members of the dance team all came to the sidelines and personally thanked each and every vet and first responder for Forcoming.this game the Red Raiders donned the black and grey camouflage jerseys they first wore in the 2019 PatriotismJustBowl.before kickoff the Red Raiders asked retired Trooper Chris Wooten to be an honorary captain at the coin toss at mid-field.Asthe pre-game activity came to an end the student section of the stadium started to get fired up. Everyone was ready for some football. The game started a bit slow with the Red Raiders only up 7-0 at the end of the firstInquarter.the second things began to open up as South Point took control of the line of scrimmage and started to dictate which way the game wouldThroughoutgo. the second quarter the Red Raider offense pushed Central all over the Onfield.the other side of the ball the South Point defense did a good job containing what should have been a potent Hilltopper offensive unit. The Central offense tried to take on the Red Raiders. They hit South Point on the ground and in the air. Yet no matter what the Hilltoppers did they just couldn’t get any traction.Inanutshell, R-S Central got no breaks, even the South Point special team units pummeled them. If you could have summed up Central woes in one play it would have come late in the second quarter when senior Will Ross fielded a punt at mid-field and took it 57 yards for a Southscore.Point went into the half up 35-0. In the third quarter the Red Raiders started to rotate players yet still scored another touchdown to make it 42-0The Hilltoppers scored twice in the fourth, but that proved to be a case of too little too late.
All in all, this turned out to be an awesome event. The crowd at Lineberger Stadium was treated to not just a good football game, but an evening that proved to be so much more. It’s no secret that today we live in a nation divided. People with opposing views struggle to find ways to communicate with each other. Yet on this night there was no division. A real sense of unity hung in the air. It was truly special to see people take a moment to come together for more than just a football game. It was nice to see folks from all walks of life take time to honor those that have given up so much so that a night like this was possible.

Dirty Grass Soul FREEBIRD Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org Most days we are people of routines. We go through the same motions every day. Each day often consists of three meals, getting the kids back and forth from school, and work. We get up the next day and repeat it all. There are times too, where we find ourselves always looking to the future and what may or may not happen. Sometimes, we focus on the past, revisiting past mistakes or things we wished we could change. In the midst of it all, we fail to seize the day God has given us.
The City of Kings Mountain welcomes FREEBIRDThe Ultimate Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute and Cleveland County’s own Dirty Grass Soul LIVE to Patriots Park, Saturday, September 10,Based2022. in Cleveland, Ohio, FREEBIRD is comprised of six seasoned musicians with experience working within the Nashville Music Scene. Covering the tunes of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s greatest hits, including Sweet Home Alabama and Saturday Night Special, this tribute show is sure to bring a show filled with high energy. Vic Harris, lead vocalist of FREEBIRD remarked, “Our goal at every performance is to not just perform our music, but provide an amazing entertaining show that audiences will remember andFormedlove.” in 2011, Cleveland County’s own Dirty Grass Soul will bring their incredible songbook to Liberty Falls Amphitheater as well. One of the Southeast’s emerging Southern Rock/ Alt. Country Bands, DGS recently released their first livedouble album and opened for BOCEPHUS himself Hank Williams Jr. Look for Dirty Grass Soul

Surely, he lived each day to the fullest knowing now just how precious life really is. As we live our lives, we can’t make assumptions about life. We make plans for tomorrow, with expectations of our future. However, we have no idea what will come, and how long we will live. Ultimately, as Hezekiah learned, our lives are in God’s hands. He knows our future, and He determines our steps. We indeed have no promise of what will come. If we have no promise of tomorrow, then we need to see the blessings of today. In Ephesians 5:16, the apostle Paul wrote of “redeeming the time” (KJV). When we think of redeeming something, we think of laying claim, or getting something back. Let’s redeem our time. Get back the day, seize the moment. We can’t undo the past, and we have no control over the future. We can live for now, seeing all that God has given us. Take today with your family, serve God, and truly enjoy life. We don’t know about the future, but we trust the One who does, Jesus. He is indeed the same yesterday, today, and forever. So today, live, redeem the time, and seize the day!
Seize the day!

Isaiah 38:1-8 tells the story of the great king of Judah, Hezekiah. He was a godly king who worked to bring the people back to God from their idolatry. One day, Hezekiah became sick. The prophet Isaiah came to him with a word from God. God told him to get his affairs in order because he would not survive the illness. Hezekiah wept and prayed to God for his life. God heard his prayers and promised him an additional fifteen years of life. Hezekiah had a new lease on life, new opportunities to live.
