City’s Westgate Park now open and ready to go after ribbon is cut $480,000 helped bring the park back to life after a long hiatus by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

According to city officials, Cherryville’s Westgate Park – long a sign of decay and neglect – has finally received the makeover and cleaning up and fixing up it has deserved for a number of years. The park, located on the city’s west side and somewhat tucked away, had a bad “rep” for many years, being a place oftentimes coming under the observation of the city’s police in times past, and for all the wrong reasons, has had a sprucing up, that’s to a large infusion of funds, as well as a great deal of hard work and “sweat capital” on the part of a great many folks who wanted to make the park place of beauty again. City Manager Brian Dalton and a number of City officials and council mem-

were officially open for business. Said City Manager Dalton, “The Westgate Park is ready to be used, and as a matter of fact, many kids are already (out there) play-

ing basketball.” Mr. Dalton noted the work on the park and its environs was done by the following contractors over a period of time, and at the blessing of the City Council:

Mike Steel, Todd Sosebee, and Parker D Fencing. Mr. Dalton also noted the cost of the work was $480,000. “There are still some cosmetic items to be addressed, but for the most part it is

complete,” he said, adding the park will be closed at night. For more information about the park, check out the city’s web site or call City Hall at (704) 435-1700.

Traditional New Year’s Shooters hopes for great weather at this year’s shot A wide shot of the Cherryville New Year’ Shooter’s, Inc. (CNYSI) group as they began their last year’s (2023) Rudisill Stadium shot, shortly after 7 p.m. on Jan. 2. See more photos on page 6. (photos provided)

CNYSI group ready, willing, and more than able to shoot in the New Year by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

The Cherryville New Year’s Shooters, Inc. group is one of two New Year’s Shooters groups who will be blasting out the old year and shooting in the new one for all the Cherryville faithful this year. Said CNYSI Secretary, Rusty Wise, “We should have around 450 members as

in year’s past. We do have a new treasurer elected – Donnie Alexander.” Mr. Wise noted that former CNYSI member Jon Abernethy – a Cherryville city councilman who was a longtime shooter – resigned earlier this year as the group’s treasurer over the museum sale issues. “Donnie has been a member and chanter with our group for many years,” said Rusty. “We are also working with the Gaston County Sherriff and the Cherryville City Police Department for more traffic control since the other group has changed their shooting schedule.”

He continued by noting that “…both groups are scheduled to shoot at Carpenter’s at the same time, which is around 1:30 a.m.”, adding, “We haven’t changed our main shooting schedule route for many years to avoid such issues.” Wise did say they expect a large crowd, especially if the weather is nice. “One of the safest ways to see the shooters is to see us at the last stop, which is Rudisill Stadium at 6:30 p.m. Seeing that many muskets blasting off at the same time is a rare sight to see. However, bring earplugs regardless of where you see the shooters.”

Vice-President Gary Dellinger: “We are a very family-oriented group that allows for a good safe environment for the kids to participate.” by MICHAEL E. POWELL Editor michael@cfmedia.info

For Gary Dellinger and the Traditional New Year’s Shooters group shooting in the New Year 2023 was as exciting then as it has always been for the past decades – a happy family of like-minded men and women all having a great time being with each other and passing on a great tradition. Gary said that keeping the tradition alive by ushering in a newer generation has always been one of their “first and foremost” things on their list when things get going. That manifests itself as them seeing more youngsters coming out to shoot. Said Gary, “We have had a lot of kids shoot with our group for years, but we did have an exceptional number of kids this year. We are a

Powell) very family-oriented group that allows for a good safe environment for the kids to participate.” He continued, “We had two parents sign up kids that were younger than six months old. Obviously, they can't shoot, nor did they even bring them out, but they want them to be members. I joined at 15, but it would be pretty cool to say I’ve been a member since I was born.” Dellinger and his fellow TNYS members will start their shot early at the Lincolnton Apple Drop shoot. No issues there, he said, but noted, “The weather last year kept the attendance down a little for the Apple

Drop, but the shooters made a good showing, with about 75 attending the event.” Overall, Dellinger, who is VP of the TNYS group, said, “We had the largest group of shooters for the 2023 New Year’s route ever. We ordered and sold 250 membership badges. We even pulled out some alternate badges and used them after we sold out.” The group put together a new plan to help EMT and emergency and first responders be able to get through their group should the need arise. Regarding how that went, Gary noted, “Times change and we have to adapt. We try to keep See TRADITIONAL, Page 3 Like Us On

What Is the Retirement Saver’s Credit and How Does It Work? Dear Savvy Senior, Can you explain to me how the retirement saver’s tax credit works? My wife and I are in our fifties and are looking for creative ways to boost our retirement savings beyond our 401(k). Is this something we may be eligible for? Struggling to Save

Dear Struggling, If your income is low to moderate and you participate in your employer-sponsored retirement plan or an IRA, the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit (aka “Saver’s Credit”) is a frequently overlooked tool that can help boost your retirement savings even more. Here’s how it works. If you contribute to a retirement-savings account like a traditional or Roth IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457, Thrift Savings Plan, Simplified Employee Pension or SIMPLE plan, the Saver’s Credit will allow you to claim 10, 20 or 50 percent of your contribution of up to $4,000 per year for couples or $2,000 for singles. Keep in mind that a credit is not the same as a tax deduction – it’s better: While a

tax deduction just reduces the amount of your income that is subject to taxes, a tax credit reduces your actual tax bill dollar-for-dollar.

To qualify, you must also be at least 18 years old and not a full-time student and were not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return. And your adjusted gross income (AGI) in 2023 must be below $73,000 or less as a married couple filing jointly, $54,750 or less if filing as head of household, or $36,500 or less if you’re a single filer. These income limits are adjusted annually to keep pace with inflation. To get the 50 percent credit, you’ll need to have an income below $43,500 for married couples filing jointly; $32,625 if you’re filing as head of household; and $21,750 if you’re a single filer in 2023. The 20 percent credit rate applies to couples earning between $43,501 to $47,500; for head of household filers it’s $32,626 to $35,625; and for individuals it’s $21,751 to $23,750.

And the 10 percent rate is for couples with an adjusted gross income between $47,501 and $73,000; for head of household filers $35,626 to $54,750; and individuals it’s between $23,751 and $36,500. Here’s an example of how this works. Let’s say that you and your wife earned $75,000 in 2023. Over the course of the year, you contributed $4,000 to your employer’s 401(k) plan. After deducting your 401(k) contribution, your adjusted gross income (AGI) on your joint return is now $71,000. Since your AGI puts you in the 10 percent credit bracket, and you’ve contributed the $4,000 maximum that can be considered for the credit, you are entitled to a $400 Saver’s Credit on your tax return. It’s also worth mentioning that the Saver’s Credit is in addition to any other tax benefits you get for your retirement contributions. So, in the previous example, not only would you be entitled to a $400 credit, but you would also be able to exclude the $4,000 401(k) contribution from your taxable income. So, if you’re in

the 12 percent tax bracket, this translates to an additional $480 in savings, for a total of $880. How to Claim To claim the Saver’s Credit, you will need to fill out Form 8880 (see IRS.gov/pub/ irs-pdf/f8880.pdf) and attach it to your Form 1040 or 1040NR when you file your tax return. For more information on the Saver’s Credit, see IRS Publication 590-A “Contributions to Individual Retirement Arrangements” (IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/ p590a.pdf). The IRS also offers an online quiz you can take to help you determine if you qualify for the Saver’s Credit. To access it go to IRS.gov/Help/ITA – click on “Do I Qualify for the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit?” under the “Credits” tab. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

This little lady gets a bit of help as she steps up to fire her gun to shoot in the New Year 2023! (photos by Susan L. Powell)

Fire shoots from the barrel of the shooter’s musket on the left as he and his friend, both members of the TNYS group, blast in the New Year!

The musket smoke surrounds the American flag handkerchief tied to this shooter’s musket at the Dennis Devine house shot on Monday, Jan. 2, 2023.

Lots of smoke, lots of loud noise, and, well… a colorful costume or two (or more) as this merry group, a.k.a the Traditional New Year’s Shooters, blasts in the New Year 2023 at member, Dennis Devine’s house in Cherryville.

TRADITIONAL From Page 1 changes to a minimum and behind the scenes as much as we can, but when we identify ways to do New Year Shooting safer and better, we do. “We have been working

with law enforcement for years with route planning, traffic flow, and public safety, but now we are taking it a step further by working with Emergency Management agencies with both Gaston and Lincoln counties. We, as shooters, know there is an inherent danger

involved with shooting these old guns, but there are steps we have identified to make the shooters and community safer. “In the 36 years I have shot, I have seen several times when emergency vehicles have needed to pass through where our group is

parked. Luckily, there has never been a time when they were blocked from passing through, but sometimes it was by luck. We implemented a new Emergency Action Plan this year that is geared at addressing situations like this and other emergencies the group has

identified as potential problems.” He continued, “The key to the plan is communication. We are trying to do better in letting these agencies know where we will be and at what times. We are working harder at keeping travel access open through major travel

roads, and having means to quickly communicate with the group in an emergency and communicating directly with first responders. We also have certified EMTs with our group with extensive medical supplies at their disposal. The good news is, with all that extra preparation this year, we once again had no reported injuries and no incidents.” As for adding any new hosts or shots scheduled, Dellinger said, “We added two new shots last year; one for Bradley Champion on East Main Street (in Cherryville) and the other was for Carolina Heating and Cooling on Academy Street (also in Cherryville). Both shots were good adds to the schedule.” Regarding whether or not the economy has changed the groups dues or anything like that, Gary said, “Our dues have remained the same for years, and the group is in very good financial shape. Our big expenses for the year are the banquet, breakfast, and lunch we provide for the members, and our scholarships. Luckily, we get enough donations to pretty much cover the scholarships each year. It takes a lot of money to operate the club. We can easily spend upwards of $10,000 on powder and caps each year. “We are really frugal with the group’s money, and do all we can to keep expenses of the club down. New Year Shooting is expensive. Powder is $20 a pound, and it’s not uncommon for someone to go through five pounds or more a year; caps are $16 for 100. The cost of guns has gone through the roof with people paying from $500 to $1,500 for a gun. Raising dues will be a last resort until we just have to in order to pay our bills.”

TODAY’S QUOTE:

OPINION

With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts. –Eleanor Roosevelt

Thank you all for allowing me to write for you… I have often thought of what I would write, or say, when it came time to write my last editorial/opinion column. That time has now come, and I confess… I still don’t know what to say – or write. Imagine that. Me, a supposedly professional “wordsmith,” unable to cobble together an unemotional, straight-from-theheart last column; a last “Op-Ed” piece to all of my dear, dedicated readers (or as I used to like to refer to you all in said columns on occasion…, “all two or (maybe) three of you!” I hope that got some small chuckle or giggle from you, but probably it didn’t. At any rate… none of that matters now. Like one of the lines from one of my favorite Led Zepplin songs (“Ramble On”) says, “The time has come to be gone…” Being able to write articles; columns; heck, just about anything for you, my dear Cherryville readers (and anyone beyond this dear and wonderful little town who has ever bothered to read my scribblings) has been the utmost joy and privilege for me, and by osmosis, my dear

wife, Susan, who is my Muse. Many times I didn’t have the guts, gumption, and sometimes even the desire to continue being a journalist, but she would then look at me with those beautiful green eyes and her winsome little smile and say, “Come on now… you know you LOVE this! You can’t quit NOW!” To her, all I can say is, “Thank you, my love! Thank you for your longsuffering perseverance and for all and everything you have done with and for me in this endeavor.” And, my dear readers, that same sentiment goes out to all of you as well. And to that I would

add, to each and every one of you here in Cherryville, from the time we arrived here in North Carolina, in 2007, until now, THANK YOU ALL! Thank you so much! From the bottom of our hearts – thank you! You have all been some of the best folks and neighbors and just all-around fantastic people in general to a couple of Kentucky transplants who came to your great town and tried our best to fit in and make it our home. Thank you for allowing us to be your neighbors and, in many cases, your friends. It is my prayer that, as the editor of this most august of community weeklies, I have made a good job of it. I have, to the best of my abilities, tried to be as fair and accurate in doing my job as I was able. If I have wronged anyone in the course of doing that job, please understand it was never personal or intentional. I always tried to be not only as fair as I could be, given the circumstances of the story arc, but I also tried to be as compassionate as I could be as well, knowing full well how, in spite of what some may really

believe, words – spoken and written – can and do hurt, and they can, if used unwisely, tear down and destroy. I don’t know what God has in store for us going forward and I don’t know what the future, at least at this writing, is for the 117-year-old Eagle, let alone Cherryville, or even us, in our retirement. It may be that, like so many vanishing smalltown, community newspapers, The Eagle’s time – as a printed product – has come and gone; and must perhaps give way to a better form of disbursing the news to the community it once served. Again, I don’t

know what the perfect answer to that particular news vacuum is, or would even look like, or will (or should be) though I do have an idea. But that is not for me to decide; that is for someone younger, smarter, more talented, and with more energy than me to see it through, if that is what is needed for this community. Whatever happens, Susan and I wish all of you well and know that we will still be around, as we do live here, after all, and have no plans to live elsewhere, unless God has other ideas. So… from the bottom of our hearts, God bless each and every one of you

in Cherryville and thank you for your support! Also, God bless all of our friends here and I especially want to ask God to bless all my fellow Community Media employees and newspaper folk who put up with me on a daily basis in my home away from home. Your smiles and kindness made it easier to come to work every day. I pray you all will have wonderful lives and be happy going forward. And as one of my Cherryville buddies used to say, when he was leaving to go back home to Raleigh, “Stay frosty, my friends!” Cheers!

Christmas should never be a time of loneliness, stress, or pressure but it was a difficult time for Mary and Joseph. They were poor people. Bringing a child into the world in a stable would not be considered an option for most of us. Traveling was a hassle and very difficult back then. While they were overjoyed with the baby Jesus, life’s circumstances were not easy. Later, they would flee to Egypt for the safety of their family which added to their pressure. The Person of Christmas should have been our focus in order to truly celebrate this season. Let’s not lose sight of the main character in the Christmas story, now or ever. If we do, then we will focus on the place, presents, pageantry and pressures of Christmas. Thus, we miss out on the real joy that the heavenly host proclaimed to those shepherds watching their sheep, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men,” (Luke 2:14).

ple who need food and clothes all year round, but to me there is something very special about helping at Christmas. In my faith it is like giving a present to that Baby in a manger who grew up and died on a cross to give me eternal life in heaven one day. In looking forward to 2024 it just amazes me how long it has been since we entered the year 2000 and all of the uncertainty of that date that spread throughout the land. You may remember some of the preparations that were made then, and the anxiety that seemed to prevail over the future. But God was in charge then, and He is still in charge now, and will be in charge forever. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to share my faith and my experiences through this column in this awesome hometown newspaper.

When it feels like the whole world is on your case. . . can truly depend on You’re a God? regular perWe are familiar son who enwith David, the young joys being man who defeated out and a great giant. And, about doing you may have heard your job and about his friendship enjoying with the son of King your hobbies. When Saul: Jonathan. Now JHOAN ALFARO people bad– before becoming Sonrise Ministries mouth your king – David, the country, shepherd boy, spent family, or faith, you stand up years just trying to figure life for what is right. You are not out. Know what I mean? It is perfect, but you are doing hard for us to relate to life as your best. a king, but we can definitely Meanwhile, it feels like relate to being an everyday, the whole world is trying to ordinary human. When we destroy you. That is where pick up reading 1 Samuel 23, David was in 1 Samuel 23. the prophet Samuel sits by But he was not alone! David patiently as these two forces had a loving Father orches- of nature walk the path that trating his every step and he God had pre-ordained for also had a loving friend. Do them. We see a king named you ever wonder if you can Saul who had lost his way. actually count on the people Saul, once anointed to be around you? Do you ever God’s chosen servant, had question whether or not you let paranoia creep in and had

grown jealous of a young warrior who refused to die in battle. See, David continued to bring victory after victory despite having unknown enemies within his own “friendly” circles. Now, any good preacher of the Bible will constantly remind you that: 1. The Bible is NOT about you. and 2. The Bible IS all about Jesus. Perhaps you can relate to being afraid you will be discarded. Perhaps you can relate to being despised by someone in a supervisory role above you. Perhaps you know what it’s like to witness people you love throw their lives away. Saul, David, Samuel, and Jonathan are interesting biblical characters. All the more amazing is the truth that King Jesus, the Good Shepherd, understands every single one of their situations as well as yours and mine.

David, who has cultivated a loving relationship with God, seems to communicate with God the same privilege that Jesus has when He speaks with our heavenly Father. Despite the paranoia, fear, the possibility of sickness and peril, potential betrayal, lack of money and resources, and despite baseless persecution – David teaches us how any human can run to God like a child runs to his dad. John 1:14 tells us Jesus came and made a tent among us. Because of the finished sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus – you and I can speak to God morning, night, and noon! So, do you? When life gets hard, who do you turn to? Now, for those of you reading, I wholeheartedly understand the desire to have a rich dialogue. Of course, you and I can approach the Father with full

assurance and faith because of the anchor that Jesus has placed beyond the veil in the holy of holies. You can also listen to the Father simply by opening the Bible and considering the counsel that He has already set forth. But God did not stop there. Prince Jonathan, who was stripped of the opportunity to be king because of his dad’s sin, comes to David’s aid again and again. Jonathan teaches us the best way to encourage one another. He does not bring David a bottle of booze, a three-season TV show, an all-expenses paid trip to leave town, or even a bucket of Rocky Road ice cream. Jonathan comes to David and encourages him in the Lord. Do you do that? Do you have friends like that? Let us build on this story as we conclude. James 5 teaches us there is a connection between

spiritual and physical illness that is sometimes linked to our sinful decisions. In other words, bad things happen because sometimes we do bad things and sometimes bad things happen simply because bad things happen. James teaches us how we can find healing by confessing our sins to one another just as we confess our sins to our loving Father – Who cleanses us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). David did both. Will you turn to the Lord when life becomes difficult? Will you choose to maintain friends who will encourage you in the Lord? Will you choose to trust that the Lord can bring infinite good out of finite bad conditions? Because He can; in fact… He already did!

Silent Night Cherryville Area In a winter wonderland, everything seems to be hushed and still, creating an atmosphere of peace. The snowflakes fall gently from the sky, covering the earth in a pristine white. The air is crisp, and a quietness envelops the surroundings. Similarly, on that holy night DANYALE PATTERSON in Bethlehem, as Mary and Joseph welcomed the Son of God into the world, there was a profound silence that surrounded the stable. The world held its breath, as if in awe of the miraculous event taking place. It was a moment frozen in time, where heaven and earth met in perfect harmony. This silence symbolizes the peace that Jesus brings into our lives. Isaiah 9:6 (ESV) says, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” REST The world we live in is marked by constant noise and distractions. Our hearts long for a respite, a moment to pause and find solace. Jesus offers us exactly that. His birth reminds us that amid a bustling world, we can find rest in him. In life’s chaos, he invites us to find rest in him and experience the tranquility of His presence. In Matthew 11:29 (AMP), Jesus says, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST (renewal, blessed quiet) FOR YOUR SOULS.” These words speak directly to the weariness and burdens we carry. Jesus understands our struggles, and he offers us a place of refuge where we can find renewal and strength. He promises to quiet our restless hearts and fill us with his unending love. During this Christmas season, may we take the time to be still and embrace the peace that Jesus offers. Let us quiet our minds and allow His presence to calm our souls. PRAY THIS PRAYER: Father, my heart is grateful for the gift of Christ. He is Emmanuel - God with us. I praise you for always being with me, and showering me with your love, peace, provision, and goodness. I ask that this season you will use me to point others to you - the greatest Christmas gift. In Jesus’ name. Amen. CONNECTING TO GOD This Christmas season you can accept the best gift you will ever receive -Salvation. It includes forgiveness of sins, an eternal relationship with the Creator of the Universe, a purpose-filled life, guidance to walk the earth victoriously and so much more. Will you receive this gift by believing that Jesus died for your sins? If yes, ask God to forgive you of your sins and tell him that you surrender your life to him. As you pray and read the bible, step by step the Lord will lead you. Merry Christmas and welcome to a Happy New Year!
